John Valby

Comedy Club | Nov. 27 The Doctor is in! John Valby, a.k.a. “Dr. Dirty,” has an uncanny rapport with an audience...his ability to mix musical talent with a madcap variety of “Dirty Ditties” leaves ‘em crying for more. His repertoire - composed of popular songs, limericks, classical arrangements and his own original creations - has forged for him a successful career out of poking fun at the audience, stretching the limits of free speech and good taste, and satirizing current events from behind his piano. When not playing or singing, Valby yells obscenities at the audience who yell right back! The Rochester-born musician/comedian has recorded and produced over 30 CD’s and LP’s including titles like Concerto for Piano Voice + 500 Screaming “A” Holes, Valby Rocks and his latest, It’s a Small Dick After All and Other Short Subjects.

Sophistafunk

Sticky Lips BBQ Juke Joint | Nov. 27 From Syracuse comes Sophistafunk, featuring Adam Gold, Jack Brown and Emanuel Washington. Formed in 2007, the group rapidly evolved into a national-touring act, winning over crowds with a larger-than-life stage presence and tight musicianship. Their latest is Freedom Is.

Black Rock Zydeco

Abilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 29 Ron Kowalewski, Tim Gettings, Tom LaChiusa and Whatley are Black Rock Zydeco. The Cajun/ Creole act delivers infectious rhythms spiked with Louisiana funk and jazz. Their song, “Two Step Gorilla,” was named ‘Song of the Day’ by The Good Neighborhood; and “Don’t Mess With My Toot Toot” is a Youtube favorite.

I t h a c a ’ s Ke v i n K i n s e l l a (founder of John Brown’s Body and cur rent member of 10Ft. Ganja Plant) performs a mix of acoustic, soul and Reggae. His 2011 solo album is titled Great Design.

Rich Homie Quan

Main St. Armory | Nov. 30 Rapper Rich Homie Quan (a.k.a. Dequantes Lamar) hails from Atlanta GA. The Def Jam recording artist is known for his singles “Type of Way” and “Difference;” and for his Still Goin In mixtape. Rochester audiences will be treated to a mix of new works and revivals as acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance presents its 43rd home season at Nazareth College Arts Center, December 3-8.

Start Making Sense Bob DiBuono Sticky Lips BBQ Juke Joint | Nov. 29 The Talking Heads tribute band, Start Making Sense, comes to town from their native Pennsylvania, recreating every stage of the band’s career; and bringing you a danceable celebration of the new-wave punk that you loved in the ‘80s. Start Making Sense sometimes also morps into the ultimate Hall and Oates tribute band!

Wammo

Bop Shop Records / Lovin’ Cup | Nov. 29 Perfor mer, poet , musician and visual artist Wammo defies classification. He’s a singer/ songwriter who can also express himself on canvas, as a record producer, a performance poet, an actor, a washboard player and a comic. Wammo will be at the Bop Shop for their Record Store Day festivities, joined by Hammel on Trial (a.k.a. Ed Hamell) - a one-man punk band; and later in the evening, he’ll appear at Lovin’ Cup.

Comedy Club | Nov. 29 & 30 Bob DiBuono’s comedic perspective finds the silliness in all of us through the use of vibrant characters and voices. His unique ability to embody abstract personas provides a landscape for great comedy. Bob has provided impressions and characters to MTV, E! Entertainment, WNEW, Pax Television, and others. He is cur rently a regular on the Sirius program, “Jim Breuer Unleashed.”

Keith Purnell

Joke Factory | Nov. 29 & 30 A high-energy act defined by quick wit, style and fast paced humor, Keith Purnell performs regularly at top comedy clubs across the U.S. including The Tropicana, Caroline’s, and Stand Up NY; as well as at Toronto’s Studio 54. You may remember him for his appearances on Last Comic Standing and In Living Color.

Kevn Kinsella

Abilene Bar & Lounge | Nov. 30

Enter The Haggis

Club @ Water St. | Nov. 30 Toronto-based Celtic rockers, Enter The Haggis, tour in support of their latest, The Modest Revolution. The group has, over the last few years, found itself causing quite a stir in its genre, landing high on Billboard and ITunes world charts; and appearing on such television shows as Live With Regis And Kelly, A&E’s Breakfast With the Arts and on PBS’s popular program, Out of Ireland. ETH has developed a sound that is progressive and lyrically driven, strongly rooted in Celtic tradition from storytelling to bagpipes; and yet dabbling in roots, funk and progressive rock.

Vampire Weekend w/MS MR

Main St. Armory | Dec. 1 Vampire Weekend is a fan favorite, famous for their “indiepop gems of a different cut,” according to Stereogum.com. Their self-released debut EP (which the New York Times described as “one of the year’s most impressive debuts”) was followed by a studio album, also titled Vampire Weekend; and Contra, both on XL Recordings. Their latest release is Modern Vampires of the City.

Check out our exclusive interview with pianist, composer, artist David Lanz at freetime.com

South Korean director Park Chan-wook had an unlikely hit back in 2003 with his violent and pretty darn twisted revenge thriller Oldboy, the story of a nasty, self-absorbed, and often quite drunk fellow who is kidnapped and held prisoner in a sort of motel room for 15 years, never knowing why he was put there or who was responsible. Upon his release – he awakes one day on a rooftop, now a free man – he is ordered to figure out what led to his imprisonment ... or else! It’s a disturbing film with a heavy dose of dark humor, including a side plot about incest, so there was a bit of a shocking ripple in the Hollywood community a few years ago when it was announced that Steven Spielberg was going to do an English-language remake. But the project fell apart, and did so again a couple more times with different directors. Then the almost 5-year-old adapted script (the original film was actually an adaptation of a Japanese comic book) was offered to Spike Lee, who happened to be a big fan of the Park Chan-wook film. Lee signed on the dotted line, vowing from the get-go that his version would not be simply a remake, but a reinterpretation of the 2003 film. Though there are a couple of pretty much frame-by-frame sequences lifted from the first one, Lee has kept his word, staying with the main plot, but introducing new characters and situations and making the film slightly more accessible, if not exactly palatable, for American audiences.

With Josh Brolin as the kidnapped protagonist, Lee’s Oldboy introduces the character as a fairly repellent drunken womanizer who has somehow made it to this point in his life without being beaten to a pulp by any decent people he has crossed. When, one morning (or is it night?), after far too many drinks, he awakes in that bare but comfortable motel-like room, where there are no phones or windows or door knobs, but only a bed and a television and a wall slot where food and an endless supply of vodka are slipped in, there’s no feeling bad for him. We don’t know that he did anything wrong, just that he’s a jerk. Time flies by, as revealed by real-life news events on his TV (reports on 9/11, on Hurricane Katrina, on Obama winning his second election, etc.) until 20 years have gone past, during which time, he has sworn revenge on whoever did this to him, and he has made use of his solitary imprisonment to get into fighting shape. Then, one day, he wakes up outside and soon after, answers the ringing phone in his pocket, on the other end of which an unfamiliar voice asks, “How was your first day of freedom?” Other characters soon enter the fray, including Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) as a nurse at a clinic who takes a liking to him, Sharlto Copley (District 9), who is almost immediately revealed as his prissy but menacing captor, and Samuel L. Jackson, about whom all that has to be said is that he looks pretty cool in a white Mohawk. Brolin moves through the film with a purpose, and he’s so good in the part, it’s hard to figure out the point where you stop disliking his character and start rooting for him, even when he has a hammer in his hand and, in one of the scenes (thankfully) lifted from the original, bloodily goes after a small army of adversaries – all, by the way, in one long, smooth

unedited shot. The sequence is a prime example of the love of black humor shared by Lee and Chanwook, and it’s one of many such bits in the film. Lee does a nice job mixing in flashbacks to help explain different characters’ current situations, and he and first-time screenwriter, Mark Protosevich, offer up some nice nods to the original without doing many actual recreations. Those familiar with the first will either be relieved or disappointed to know that no live octopi are eaten on-camera this time around. But if you look carefully, you’ll see a drawing of an octopus. Toward the end, the plotting leans toward the queasy, unsavor y side of things, and the ending is rather unsettling. Just like the original. But never fear; Spike Lee has taken a very good film, treated it with honor and respect, and made it his own.

Shopping with Spirit

FREETIME November 27 - December 11, 2013

by Sue Cannon

It seems that as soon as the Thanksgiving dishes are back on the shelves, we all begin to feel the pressure. This year, in fact, even before that! Most in our region will find themselves rushing from one location to another, braving the crowded malls, in an effort to find something special for everyone on their list. There are those, however, who believe there is a better way. They will take a different approach - put a little thought in ahead of time. They’ll browse through our annual Gift Guide for ideas, make a few calls, check out a few websites, think creatively before they hit the road. Some will even find ways to make shopping part of their seasonal fun! They’ll visit our museums all decked out for the holidays and scour the gift shops. We have a huge selection of new, used, and vintage vinyl LPs, 45s, and CDs and are adding to it on a daily basis. We also have stores on Amazon, Discogs, and eBay. Please like us on our facebook page too! We are always looking for good condition records of all kinds, even select 45s and 78s.
