..And In With The New by Mark Tichenor It’s the night before Thanksgiving and the room is packed. Every seat is taken, the echoing conversation and laughter so loud it borders on uncomfortable. The beer is flowing from these taps for the first time, and it flows in a torrent. It’s the first day of business for the Lost Borough Brewery and there’s a line out the door. Five years ago, Rochester was a

•••••••••••••••••••••

three-

brewery town. Genesee was the big brewing icon, while The Rohrbach Brewing Company and Custom Brewcrafters handled the small-batch side of things. That’s how it’s been since the early 1990s, and that was fine with Rochester. It’s not fine anymore. Rochester is going brewery-crazy. Seriously, new breweries are sprouting up everywhere. Naked Dove Brewing, Three Heads Brewing, and Roc Brewing jimmied the floodgates open a couple of years back, proving Rochester to be a thirsty town with a keen interest in supporting local. Now, a new batch of entrepreneurs- homebrewers and craft beer lovers alike- could follow their dreams and make a go of it in this city’s craft beer scene. Lost Borough is the first of a

www.FREETIME.com •

new crop to successfully navigate the byzantine State, Federal and local licensing maze and open for business. Knucklehead Brewery, in the former Seitz’s Market in Webster, is hot on their heels, with a projected Dec. 20th opening. Over on the river near the Ford St. Bridge, shiny new tanks are visible through the window of the soon-to-open Swiftwater Brewing. This tally doesn’t even consider the breweries opening around the Region. Nedloh Brewing started up a couple of months ago, and The Stoneyard Pub is pumping brew out of a 2-barrel kettle in Brockport. So we’re awash in small-batch, independent beer. What does that mean to you, the drinker? In a sense, these are challenging times to get into the craft brewing business. Beer distribution companies have been busy bringing premium stuff to the area. West Coast craft heavyweights are opening huge new breweries on the Eastern Seaboard. Space on retail shelves is finite; there are only so many taps to go around. And our breweries’ beers need to coexist bottleneck- to-bottleneck with some of the finest from around the country and the world. Gone are the days when “local is enough; beer also has to be awesome. It is to be hoped that each of our new breweries share this opinion, learning from those that trod this path, helping each other find the right niche, and at the same time challenging every other producer in town to step their game up, scrutinize the beverages they produce, improve with each batch and commit, not just to being Rochester breweries, but to making Rochester the incredible craft beer town we all very much want it to become. One thing that’s evident when you look around these new breweries, with their gleaming metal and meticulously-appointed decor: you see passion, and that bodes well for the beer and for the joy of discovering what’s next on tap. The only way any of our new crop of brewery owners can make their dreams come true is to do their best to follow them. And it’s up to us beer lovers to toast them every step of the way. DISC

By Scott Gudell Forever Christmas David Lanz and Kristin Amarie Whether you call David Lanz’s music contemporary piano music or New Age, the phrase used when he released many of his recordings in the 1980’s, you can rest assured that the end result will be carefully crafted with meticulous attention paid to musical details and subtle nuances. With Forever Christmas, Mr. Lanz teams up with singer Kristin Amarie, his life partner, as they peacefully celebrate the season. A majority of the songs are originals, but the pair does offer several standards such as “Oh Holy Night” and “Silent Night,” with help from old friends that worked with Lanz on the influential Narada Records label, including Nancy Rumbel on woodwinds and Eric Tingstad on guitar. Amarie’s singing is reverential and elegant while Lanz balances several of the CD’s early songs with short, pensive piano interludes. Later on the disc, Amarie sings a Swedish song in homage to her Nordic ancestry, offering insight into a land that knows a thing or two about chilly winters and long dark nights. With a stunningly designed holiday cover reminding us why CDs vs. sterile downloads are always preferable, the duo has created a comfortable collection of songs about, as they say, “the spiritual side of the holiday…and a lot about love.” It's a collection that can be revisited year after year. My Illusion Steel Kingdom (self-released CD) This mighty kingdom was not built overnight. The band Steel Kingdom can trace its origins back some 25 years as the current version grew out of other long gone bands, went through n u m e r ous personnel changes since its

•••••••••••••••••••••

inception a decade ago, all leading to today’s version that retains only one original member, drummer Thomas Kennedy. With the recent release of My Illusion, the group’s third full-length album, they are committed to carrying on…for as long and as strong as possible. The signature sound of Steel Kingdom remains intact: fierce guitars, precise, machine gun drumming and sung, not screamed vocals, with Nancy Halligan, former band-managerturned-singer, pointing the way on lead vocals. She soars on the heavy rockers, yet knows how to bring things down to a whisper on pensive ballads. The songs have opening lines such as “Bruised and battered, the truth will make your ego sore,” “Learning to deal with sorrow…” and “All they ever wanted was an image they could sell,” giving hints of the aggressive, often disillusioned view they have of the world. But Steel Kingdom balances these hard hitting songs with optimistic words of solace and even offer an instrumental oasis midway through the CD, giving the listener a chance to rest and rejuvenate. The five members of Steel Kingdom may not be long time partners, but collectively they are veteran musicians who bring a sharp precision and focused approach to the group’s newest release, My Illusion. Levin Brothers {Lazy Bones Recordings) The first time these two musicians played together, it was in the 1950’s. They were only about 6 – 8 years old at that point and probably hoppin’ and boppin’ in their backyard since Tony and Peter Levine are, as the title alerts you to, brothers. Now, some 60 years later, they’ve teamed up again for a rare recording session as co-leaders. Those 1950’s roots have nurtured Tony (bass and cello) and Peter (keyboards) as the disc echoes the cool jazz of the 50’s and early 60’s, yet is balanced by an

alert, contemporary sound. Sure, Eastman School of Music grad Tony has long since secured his place in the world of top echelon rock and roll musicians from his work with titans such as Peter Gabriel, King Crimson and countless others (including John Lennon), but this time around he and his brother demonstrate a love, as well as mastery of pure, uncut jazz The entire disc, except for one selection, is all originals as the Levin brothers are joined by Eric Lawrence (sax), David Spinozza (guitar), Jeff Siegel (drums) and Steve Gadd (as a guest drummer on the first and last cut). The selections and presentations are, as would be expected, worlds apart from the progressive rock solo efforts of Tony Levin from his early 2000’s recordings, and are more aligned with the traditional jazz that Peter is more familiar with. “Bassics” is, just that, a basic intro that sets the tone with its smooth and subtle approach which segues into “Brothers,” still dominated by Tony’s upbeat bass, but featuring Peter’s vintage organ work as well. OK, now that the listener has set-

tled in a bit, saxophonist Lawrence makes a sultry appearance on “Mysterioso,” and Peter coaxes some late-night shadowy notes from the piano. Then, on “Jumpin’ Jammies,” Lawrence is spry, sprinting briskly through the cut. Peter leads the way on organ for several cuts and then gets back to a soothing, melodic piano on “Matte Kudasai” (a cover of a King Crimson song co-written by Tony). “When Sasha Gets the Blues” is a dreamy, pensive composition that is tender and evocative and the album wraps with another smart selection as drummer Steve Gadd makes his final guest appearance, and the group wraps up a stylish session. With most of the songs comfor tably nestled in the three minute range, this smart combo of musicians knows how to focus on the songs at hand, keep them tight and deliver classic jazz at its best.

stant pain. Not much needs to be said about Ruf falo, whose Dave Schultz has got it much more together than his younger brother. He works as a wrestling coach, he’s got a tight family, and he’s a happy man. Mark Ruffalo might not know how to give a bad or even mediocre performance. Tatum and Ruffalo give the film a great start with an intense, almost wordless wrestling workout. Tatum obviously studied the craft of wrestling for the part, and Ruffalo already knew the basics, as he was a wrestler in high school. Shortly after their close but slightly strained relationship is established, there’s a phone call to Mark, and an invitation to visit Foxcatcher Farm, where John du Pont has put together a wrestling facility. “I’m a wrestling coach, and I want to speak with you about your future,” he says to Mark upon his arrival there. But there’s something in his voice, or maybe on his face, that makes you wonder if it’s maybe his own future he’s talking about. Mark likes the idea of being part of the team being assembled there. He soon invites Dave to

join him, but Dave is too settled, and has no interest in uprooting his family. Mark’s not alone in the idea of Dave joining him. Du Pont thinks it would be great to have his brother there, too, to help him coach. But it’s still a no. Little did either of the Schultz brothers know that du Pont wasn’t much more than a petulant rich kid, long used to getting his way. The psychological games begin when he pulls Mark aside and says, “Dave will never let you be what you can be. You’ll always be in his shadow.” Who is this guy? What does he want? What’s he capable of? More questions arise when he tells Mark to stop calling him “Mr. du Pont,” and to start calling him John or Coach or Eagle or Golden Eagle. By the time he says, “I want Dave to come here,” and it’s clear that it’s now an order, not a request, things are going downhill, and the unease he creates never goes away. The film takes us to Olympic Trials in Pensacola, then later to the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, and it plays out an appalling act that destroys lives and careers. You’ll come out shaken and spellbound.

FOXCATCHER

Written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman; directed by Bennett Miller with Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo • Rated R By Ed Symkus It’s a grim, true story, and it’s an actors’ showcase. Bennett Miller, whose most recent feature was the terrific Moneyball, goes for a different sport this time: amateur wrestling, at the Olympics level. The three main characters involved are the wealthy and psychotic John du Pont, along with two brothers who won gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics – Mark and Dave Schultz. The actors playing the characters are Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo. Plenty has already been written about Carell’s switch from comic actor to serious thespian in this film, but that’s actually a little unfair to him, as he’s previously hit plenty of straight-ahead “serious” notes in films including Little

Miss Sunshine and Crazy, Stupid, Love. His John du Pont, stifled by his domineering mother (Vanessa Redgrave), looking tense and worried, stands stooped over, but with his head tilted up, appearing to be physically uncomfortable. He’s gone from one hobby to another, switching to something new when he tires of something old. In 1987, when the story takes place, he’s started collecting and supposedly coaching amateur wrestlers, with dreams of winning a gold medal via one of them. Carell, with assistance from a prosthetic nose and a beading up of his eyes, is quietly creepy in the role. Tatum gets better with every part, strutting his stuff in Magic Mike, demonstrating nicely tuned comic timing in the Jump St. films, and now portraying Mark Schultz, a troubled man, confused about his direction in life, but proud of his gold medal, and ever-ready to talk about its significance, especially to kids in elementary school lectures. The makeup folks have given Tatum cauliflower ears, but he provides the other physical traits, from the brooding facial expressions to the slow walk that makes him look like he’s in con-
