Nazareth College Arts Center | Dec. 15 Originally formed in 1986 to experiment with the sound of medieval chant and polyphony as sung by higher voices, Anonymous 4 has become renowned for their astonishing vocal blend and technical virtuosity. The four women combine musical, literary and historical scholarship with 20th century art, performing with uncanny intuition and interweaving music with poetry and narrative. Anonymous 4’s six recordings have sold a staggering 650,000 copies worldwide. The latest of their nearly two dozen albums is Secret Voices: Chant & Polyphony from the Las Huelgas Codex.

Wintersun, the extreme metal band from Finland, released their self-titled debut on Nuclear Blast in 2004. The video for “Beyond the Dark Son� brought the group popular acclaim. Theatre Area Openings •GREATER TUNA – Greater Tuna, a “comedy with ‘Tex’ appeal,” opens on December 12 at Downstairs Cabaret Theatre, 20 Windsor Street. This hilarious send-up of small town morals has been a long-running Off-Broadway

hit. The show features just two actors who create the entire population of Tuna in a tour-de-farce of quick change artistry, changing costumes and characterizations. by Sue Cannon We’re in the thick of it now. Chanukah is already here; and Christmas is just around the corner. Our homes are decorated, cookies are made, and (most) gifts have been selected. Time now to relax and enjoy the season. Time to sit by a roaring fire, to decorate the tree, to read through holiday greetings sent from family and friends. What could be nicer? Don’t forget, though, to take in as many special events this year as possible. There are theatrical shows, holiday concerts, museum events and other ways to celebrate: •Thru December 14: At the George Eastman House Festival of Trees, held in the museum at 900 East Avenue, dozens of beautifully decorated Christmas trees will be displayed, lit up in creative splendor. They are available to the public by silent auction. the founders of 20th century blues, Eddie “Son” House. Preachin’ The Blues: The Life and Times of Son House is a detailed, intimate look at the world Son House was born into, recorded in, perfor med in and ultimately helped define. Even legendary blues god Robert Johnson acknowledged that he learned a thing or two from listening to and talking to Son House. Late blues giants such as Muddy Waters repeatedly paid homage to House as well. Beaumont meticulously poured through countless articles, books and transcriptions to assemble a focused, cohesive look at House. Born in 1902, Son House was determined to get out of the hot, sun baked fields of Mississippi and for that reason, and a few others, he was preaching the gospel by the 1920’s. But the tug of whiskey and women, and ultimately the blues, was stronger than the hand of the Lord and he was soon performing in juke joints and barrel houses. Being a preacher meant you knew how to project and House had a mighty voice. By 1930 he had recorded several sides for a small record company, but would

not record again for over a decade, when Alan Lomax, representing the Library of Congress, came knocking on his door in the early 1940’s as part of his project to compile an Archive of American Folk Song. While the 30’s were consumed by a combination of day labor and live performances for House, those early 1940’s sessions were “archived� and then House, well he disappeared for two decades. Preachin’ the Blues rounds up as many facts as possible and glues the story together with a combination of research and educated guesses.  As House told one interviewer, which is recounted in this book, �All you got to do is say one word that’s untrue, and it will go all over the country in a day or two.  But if you tell the truth, it will take ten years to get there.� Amen. What ultimately happens is

“When Son House left Mississippi in 1943, he might well have fallen off the face of the earth. But this he did not do. Instead he moved to Rochester, New York‌â€? “the realâ€? Son House stands up and reveals all his triumphs and tragedies decades after his final song.  A big portion of those years of “obscurityâ€? were spent in Rochester after he journeyed north to find employment with the railroad, among other jobs. What happened after his mid 1960’s re-discovery is the heart of the resurrection, and Beaumont contributes mightily to the legacy of a great bluesman who eventually began to perform again. “Touring, recording and giving interviewsâ€? all contributed to the history of the blues and, as a reviewer in Britain wrote in 1970, House established “a timeless reputation.â€? Beaumont’s book unites all this and compels you to go in search of the truth, which ultimately lies in the grooves of old LPs and re-issued CDs.

Written and directed by Judd Apatow Universal Pictures Rated R By Ed Symkus It’s no big deal to learn that writer-producerdirector Judd Apatow is returning to familiar territory with his newest film. There exists in Hollywood something called the Apatow formula. His films, usually centering on close relationships, are funny in the first act, funny in the second act, serious in the third act, then funny again and tied up in a big, happy bow in the fourth act.    This all worked out quite well in an audience-pleasing kind of way the first couple of times, but then his films, all well written and breezily directed, started to get a little tired.    This time around, Apatow literally returns to familiar territory – This Is 40 is a sequel to Knocked Up – but he wisely mixes up that formula. It’s a comedy, an often sparklingly funny one, but there’s no waiting around for that third act seriousness. Doses of it are liberally spread throughout the film, comfortably mixed in with the yucks, keeping viewers offguard as to which way the mood is going to shift.    It also takes an odd approach to being a sequel. Knocked Up was mostly about the results of an “unsafe� one-night stand between Ben and Alison (Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl), with an additional, and definitely secondary, story concerning her older sister Debbie (Leslie Mann) and Debbie’s husband Pete (Paul Rudd). This Is 40 is about Debbie and Pete. Ben and Alison are nowhere to be seen.    Nor are they missed. Debbie and Pete, even with far less screen time, were much more interesting characters. Here we get to see them up close and personal in the happiness and strife that’s what marriage is all about. There’s sex talk galore between them, some of it pretty darn raunchy; there’s some good-natured bickering; there’s a great argument set in the confines of a bathroom; there’s happy bedroom talk that feels refreshingly adlibbed. Yet without missing a beat, the script gets all cutesy when it focuses on their young kids.

   The story quickly gets around to the film’s title, as both Pete and Debbie are about to reach that special age (though she won’t admit it, even to herself). Her initial freaking out over this “next phaseâ€? soon turns to acceptance, and is an early signal of how complex and nuanced Mann’s performance is going to become. Much of that, of course, is due to Apatow’s writing. Rudd, to his credit, gives us a portrayal of a nice fellow who becomes stuck in a rut, and sometimes can’t help reverting to wiseguy mode.    His rut involves money problems that he doesn’t reveal to his wife, and the film becomes a cautionary tale about the dangers of keeping secrets from the ones we love. She stumbles upon his cash flow dilemma but doesn’t tell him, all the while keeping a completely different secret (which won’t be revealed here) from him.    There’s a wealth of other relationship issues being explored in the script, some among friends, some between adults and their parents. Albert Brooks wonderfully plays Larry, the sad sack, money-borrowing dad of Pete. John Lithgow takes on the unevenly written part of Oliver, the estranged dad of Debbie. Unfortunately Lithgow can’t do much with what he’s given, but Brooks handily displays why he’s thought of as a master of subtle comic timing.    While this is probably Apatow’s best and most thoughtful film, one problem stills dogs him and his work. His movies are always too long, and he’s in need of some self-editing discipline. There are a few characters (Megan Fox as a store clerk, rocker Graham Parker as himself) and even entire scenes that just don’t need to be in the film.    The best part about it, though, is that Apatow has given both Mann and Rudd a chance to shine, and they do.
