As a former (and original) member of Spyro Gyra, Catallo is a 6-time Grammy nominee and a Jazz Hall of Fame member. He was responsible for writing many of Spyro’s popular hits like “Cafe Amore,” “Lovin’ You,” “It Doesn’t Matter” and others, performing with the group at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival. Chet won the 2012 Artist Award from the Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester.

Nazareth College Arts Center | Dec. 31 The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the ver y people and places that employed them. Regularly featured on NPR, their s o n g p a ro d i e s and sketches are up-to-the-minute send-ups of all things political satirizing issues, events and personalities from both sides of the aisle while providing a nationwide laugh for millions. Beers To Beat The Winter Blahs by Mark Tichenor By this time you’re probably as fed up as I am with the frenzy of holiday consumption created by the retail marketing machine. Hold on while I take this blood pressure pill… Right, anyway, not all holiday consumption is bad. You could, for example, be consuming holiday ales. While it’s true that many breweries cynically use the Christmas season to add a bunch of cloves and cinnamon to their existing beer, draw a soused Santa on the packaging, and roll it out to grocery stores, there are some well-crafted ones out there as well. Take Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale for example, released every winter, Celebration is the kind of beer that’ll have you gulping down whatever nasty sludge is preceding it in the cellar, if only to hurry up and get it tapped. Instead of relying on spices, Celebration leads with West Coast hops, layered over a chewy, ever so slightly caramel malt backbone. It’s a skillful, clever balance requiring equal parts subtlety and Chutzpah, and not something every brewery is capable of pulling off. Sierra Nevada Celebration 2013 has been officially released, and can be found on tap across the Greater Rochester area, as well as packaged in beer stores and supermarkets. Closer to home, the Rohrbach Brewing Company also bucks the pumpkin pie spice trend for their annual Kacey’s Christmas

Ale. This rich brown ale instead incorporates chocolate, coffee and cherry flavors for a warming brew that’s equally pleasing in front of a roaring fire or in a cozy pub. There’s more than a hint of fruitcake to Kacey’s, in a good way. It evokes the comforting aspects of the holiday season that tend to get downplayed in the mad stampede to the shopping center. Kacey’s Christmas Ale has become a Rochester seasonal staple you can find on draft around town, at Rohrbach’s brewpub on Buffalo Road, or at the Railroad Street Brewery adjacent to the Public Market. Naked Dove, in Canandaigua, is in their third year of producing Nice and Naughty Christmas ale. This one does incorporate spices, blended into a robust red ale which would stand up well on its own. Cinnamon, clove and allspice come readily to the tip of the tongue, and Brewmaster Dave Schlosser likes to quiz tasters to determine the other flavor notes. In any event, what makes Nice and Naughty a standout isn’t the spices in it, but their subtle interplay with the ale’s flavor and aroma notes; they enhance and never overwhelm. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY Written by Steve Conrad; directed by Ben Stiller With Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Shirley MacLaine Rated PG By Ed Symkus First there was the James Thurber short story, published in The New Yorker on March 18, 1939, taking up less than two pages, and telling of the “daring exploits” going on inside the mind of meek, mildly henpecked Walter Mitty as he accompanied his wife on a day of shopping. Then there was the popular 1947 feature film, a big hit for star Danny Kaye, that used the story for its core, then expanded upon it, eventually turning into a lighthearted and lightweight mystery-thriller. Now it’s Ben Stiller’s turn, and he’s both starring in it and directing, from a script by Steve Conrad. That’s nothing but good news. This is the kind of role Stiller is perfect in – a guy with a face stuck in a state of wonderment, trying to figure out what’s going on around him. Stiller’s Walter is neat and ordered and polite, and he’s a dedicated professional. Alas, his job working with photographs at Life Magazine is winding down, as the film’s story begins with the iconic publication’s demise. But his imagination is more active than ever. This second film version also zooms in on Walter’s regular habit of zoning out, of letting some small incident or thought send him off to a fantasy world where he suddenly saves

the day or gets the girl ... or sometimes both. And it goes far beyond even where the Danny Kaye film went. This one’s part whimsy, part adventure, part romance, part mystery, and part travelogue, starting off in New York City, then making pit stops in Greenland, Iceland, and the Himalayas. Walter is a lonely fellow, hoping to meet someone through the online dating site eHarmony. A specific someone – that cute new coworker at Life, Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), a recent divorcee who also works with photos, and whose profile he notices on that Website. Although it’s eventually made clear that Walter has been visiting his world of imagination for a long time, the first instance of it in the film involves his thoughts about getting Cheryl’s attention. It happens early on, and it’s a mar velous moment, the first of many that utilize spectacular visual effects springing from wildly inspired ideas. But the film doesn’t just stay with Walter’s puppy love . It quickly turns into the sad and frustrating and inevitable and unfortunately true story of Life Magazine vanishing from the world of print publications, and ending up only online. The suits swarm in, headed by smarmy, cold-hearted, and clueless transition director Ted Hendricks (Adam Scott, Ben on Parks and Recreation). Severance packages are put in order. But there’s still one last print issue to put out, and the cover had better be a memorable one. But the negative of the secret photo for that cover, taken by the magazine’s elusive photographer (a brief, beautifully done cameo by Sean Penn), who

still lives in the past by using film, has gone missing. It’s Walter’s self-imposed duty to find it, no matter where the hunt takes him ... physically or imaginatively. What we get out of all of this is – hold on, folks, I’ve actually never used this clichéd term before – the feel-good movie of the year. Walter is the kind of guy audiences will root for from beginning to end. And the people around him, from Cheryl to his sister (Kathryn Hahn) to his mom (Shirley MacLaine) to his dedicated coworker Hernando (Adrian Martinez) are all nice folks (well, there is the exception of that snaky suit). This film veers 180 degrees away from the Thurber stor y in that while many of Walter’s adventures are only of the waking dream variety, the journey he sets out on for real lands him in one perilous, but comic, situation after another. It was a wise choice to limit the crazy visual effects, but when they do make their appearances, they’re presented with a breathtaking roar of action or, in one case, during which The Curious Case of Benjamin Button gets a strange little shout-out, with satirical intent. There’s even a nice little nod to David Bowie’s Space Oddity, sung quite well first by Wiig, then heard by Bowie. Stiller holds the film together with a very strong central performance. But it’s now time for all skeptics to admit that his earlier directorial efforts, especially Zoolander and, even better, Tropic Thunder, were not flukes. Stiller knows what he’s doing in front of and behind the camera. This is his most accomplished film so far.
