Chet was recently honored by the Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester, wining the 2012 Artist Award.

Jackson Rohm

A long-standing tradition, Nazareth College Arts Center brings in the new year with political satire, hosting The Capitol Steps for two shows on December 31.

Johnny’s Irish Pub | Dec. 28 With thousands of shows under his belt and over 15,000 albums sold, Jackson Rohm has moved from playing predominantly pop/rock to finding a suitable niche in country music as displayed on his release, Long Way From Moving On. Rubblebucket Orchestra

Water St. Music Hall | Dec. 29 Rubblebucket Orchestra is one of the hottest acts to come out of Boston in recent years. Now based in Brooklyn, the ten-piece Afro-beat/rock band is fronted by vocalist Kalmia Traver and led by Alex Toth on trumpet. In the short time that this genre mashing group has been together, they have developed a major and

Their latest release is the “Oversaturated” EP, a follow-up to Omega La La... Brooklyn’s Marco Benevento has been performing as a pianist/ organist/songwriter for more than a decade, amassing an extensive resume of compositions. Later he joined Garage A Trois, releasing two albums including 2011’s Always Be Happy. As a solo artist, he has six CDs to his credit - the latest is TigerFace featuring the single, “This Is How It Goes.”... beer CRAFT

From The Shadow of A Giant by Mark Tichenor

Rochester’s latest craft brewery is... Genesee? It feels weird just to type those words but it’s true. Over on Cataract Street, in the recently opened Genesee Brew House, ex-Wagner Valley brewer Dean Jones is making a line of Genesee craft beers for on-premise sales and consumption, and, for the most part, they’re pretty darn good.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Brew House, it’s the new visitors’ center, heritage museum and pub that opened up in a renovated Cataract Street facility early this fall. The place is really slick; Genesee’s parent company spared no expense in installing a beautiful facility with the best view of High Falls you could imagine. Oh, and in the back they placed a killer 20barrel brewery that lets Genesee go toe-to-toe with any craft brewery, on their own turf at least. Brewing true small-batch craft beers is something many in the company wanted to do, but it was never feasable in their principal brewhouse, which is set up to produce hundreds of thousands of gallons at a time. The small pilot brewer y allows Genesee brewers to tinker with recipes

with a grassy nose and a hint of citrus from the hops. With it's overall hop profile being quite subdued in comparison with most American IPAs, this would be a great introduction for people just starting to explore beer. The porter is somewhat disappointing, very light for the style and more reminiscent of a brown ale. A winter warmer also just went on tap, and a North German Pils is happily lagering away for the near future. Genesee deser ves kudos for not wrapping these beers in a cutesy brand identity or giving them silly names for the sake of marketing. Consumer preferences have reverted to artisan level, and Genesee lets the beer stand naked, to be appreciated as a product that represents the venerable brewery. Currently, the only place to get the Genesee craft line is at The Brew House itself, but that's not a bad thing. Sitting in a cozy pub, with the waterfall cascading away in the background (and a damn good order of wings on the table) helps to give the drinker a sense of place...a connection to Rochester and its iconic brewery. With that combination of place and beverage, the Genesee Brewery is bound to gain respect here at home. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. and ideas that can later scale up to national-level production, in addition to the new and ever-rotating craft beer line. This is a brand new direction for a company that was built on not changing very much, so it’s unsurprising that the Genesee craft line interprets classic beer styles, like porter and English IPA, instead of striking out into the land of exotic ingredients and crazy style mashups. This may not sit well with the hallowed pinnacles of beergeekery, but it’s in keeping with traditional artisan brewing and creates some lovely daily drinkers. Genesee Scotch Ale is the most mouth-watering. Dark, heavy and sweet, it nails the style guidelines and still manages to refresh. The IPA impresses as well, leading

If making movies is all about who you know, it’s a good thing that Matt Damon and John Krasinski had some connections. Both have written scripts. Damon co-wrote Good Will Hunting and Gerry. Krasinski adapted Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. Each has a relationship with actress Emily Blunt. Damon was her costar in The Adjustment Bureau. Krasinski is married to her. Both have been directed by Gus Van Sant - Damon previously in Good Will Hunting and Gerry and now Promised Land, Krasinski in Promised Land. Damon and Krasinski also co-wrote Promised Land. The two recently spoke in Los Angeles about the film, which tackles the issue of fracking for natural gas, and looks more at the people than the politics of the situation. Damon plays a company agent who’s trying to get struggling farmers to lease out their land to drillers. Krasinski plays an activist who‚’s trying to convince the same farmers that the practice is dangerous. Both actor-writers seemed relieved and a little surprised that, due to certain circumstances, the film actually got made. “I had never written an original script, said Krasinski. “So about two years ago, I started thinking about what I wanted to write about, and the thing I came to was American identity. We’d all made so much noise about the people who were being elected, but I think a lot of times we forgot to tell the story of the people who

www.FREETIME.com •

were being affected by all this stuff. So when the idea of natural gas drilling came into the story, it was a perfect backdrop. It’s like high stakes poker. There’s so much potentially to gain and so much potentially to lose, that these people are in an incredibly complicated situation. It’s sort of ignorant to say one side is wrong or the other side is wrong; somewhere in the middle is the truth, and you find it in these people. Krasinski would eventually present the idea to Damon, who had already been thinking about working with him. We befriended each other when I worked with Emily on The Adjustment Bureau‚ said Damon. “My wife and I hit it off with them so we started going out to dinner. John’s a great writer and producer, and the scope of his talent is vast and impressive. So I immediately started trying to find stuff that we could do together. Then he suggested this, so we decided to take a crack at writing it. Damon was attracted to the American identity idea, and knew the importance and relevance of the fracking issue. “It’s very polarizing, he said. “Because people have to engage with the issue. It’s real and it’s here. We wanted to show the human cost of something like this. Damon went so far as to agree to make Promised Land his directorial debut while he and Krasinski were still writing it. He has fond memories of the writing sessions, but the directing part didn’t happen. John was doing The Office and I was out here doing We Bought a Zoo, and he just started showing up at my house on weekends. He’d show up for breakfast, and we’d work all day Saturday and

December 26, 2012 - January 9, 2013 FREETIME then end with dinner. It was hard, but writing a script isn’t something that’s totally focused. You’re taking little breaks all the time. One of my kids might run in and John would give him a horsey ride and then you might think, ‘Oh yeah, I know what this character will say here.’” “Yeah, I did a lot of horseback rides, and threw out my back,” said Krasinski, then added, “Matt and I worked really well together. We worked quickly, and had similar sensibilities. I think we have an innately positive outlook on life, so our idea of where we wanted this movie to go was always similar.” Then things went wrong, or at least got too busy. Damon had been working without a break, and near the end of 2011, having been away from his family to act in Elysium for director Neill Blomkamp, he came home to finish promoting We Bought a Zoo. “It was December 15, and my year was over. But I got home and looked at my calendar and realized that if I was going to direct this movie and get it out this year, I had to go into preproduction on January 2. And I just couldn’t leave my kids again.” He called Krasinski to tell him he wasn’t going to direct. That didn’t go well. Neither did the rest of his news. “Warner Brothers had given us the money for the film. They were backing it because of me,” he said. “But I knew the second I told them I wasn’t going to direct it, they would pull out, which they did. So I lost us a director and our money. But it was the right decision. I told John I didn’t know what was gonna happen but our script is good and there’ll be a great director who wants to do it.” “It was a rough phone call to get,” recalled Krasinski. “But I totally understood what he was doing. Well, I won’t lie. I didn’t understand at the time. It was really hard. I went downstairs and said to my wife, ‘What do I do now? How do I pick up the pieces?’ But it was incredible that less than 12 hours later, Gus Van Sant had signed on to direct.” All Damon and Krasinski can say about what led up to that was thank goodness for e-mail. “The morning after I called John, I was leaving for Florida with my family, sitting on the plane feeling horrible,” said Damon, who decided to get a message to his old friend Van Sant. Krasinski, too, was feeling bad.

You can’t make this better!’” said Krasinski. “I e-mailed Gus and told him everything that happened,” said Damon. “He e-mailed me right back, saying, ‘I love your writing. I’d love to read it.‚’ So I forwarded the script to him.” The happy ending comes courtesy of Van Sant. “I almost said yes right away, but then I decided I should read the script,” said Van Sant. “So I did, and the script was great. TOP FILM 22 FREETIME December 26, 2012 - January 9, 2013

By Ed Symkus

As usual, there were too many movies I liked this year to whittle the list down to just 10 of them. There was initially a Top 16, then a Top 15, but now I’ve finally got it leveled off at a baker’s dozen. And as with lists of past years, this one doesn’t have any ridiculous numerical values attached. I enjoyed every one of them. They’re all equally the best. So here are the films, in alphabetical order, that are so good, I intend to see them twice. Except for Cloud Atlas, which I’ve already seen three times.

ARBITRAGE

ARBITRAGE Richard Gere’s best performance since The Hoax highlights this tense thriller about a hedge fund manager who suddenly has to deal with annoyances including a cash flow disruption and the accidental death of his mistress. It’s a story of the world closing in on a guy who’s always been above it all, and of loyalties morphing into mistrust. The film’s key moments involve some character changes presented by Susan Sarandon as his wife, and oddly physical scene-stealing bits by Tim Roth as an inquisitive cop. THE AVENGERS All of those Marvel Comics films from recent years meld into an actionpacked and often wisecrackingly goofy celebration of good versus evil, under the multi-leveled direction and screenwriting of Joss Whedon. Starting with a Shakespearian-like sibling rivalry between Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the film catapults itself into “mastery of the human race” territory, with good guys galore going up against armies of darkness. But a rich sense of humor permeates even the most dazzling visual effects.

CHRONICLE

THE BOURNE LEGACY Nope, the series didn’t die when director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon walked away. Directorial duties were taken over by Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three entries, and the focus was shifted to another killer agent, Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) who is being hunted by the folks on his own side. The film features some regular Bourne tropes – running across rooftops, close-proximity fistfights – but ramps up the excitement way past that of its predecessors. CHRONICLE This low-budget sci-fier about a trio of teens who acquire superpowers, but use them, well, as if they were teens, features phenomenal visual effects (Man, I really want to play football way up in the sky!), relaxed and believable acting from people I’d never seen before, and inventive direction from first-timer Josh Trank. The plot is outlandish, but approached with the proper sense of wonder, it should make anyone watching feel like a kid again.

CLOUD ATLAS

•THE • • DARK • • • KNIGHT • • • • RISES •••••••••••

CLOUD ATLAS You want me to pick one? Fine, I’ll pick one. This, my favorite film of the year, is a knockout of substance and style. The dense and challenging David Mitchell novel gets a dazzling screen adaptation, courtesy of Andy and Lana Wachowski, and Tom Tykwer, telling six very different stories – all at once – and blending them together into a philosophical mélange about the universality of the human spirit. It’s at once a thriller, romance, dark comedy, historical drama, and sci-fi epic, and one of the most ambitious films I’ve ever experienced. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Visionary writer-director Christopher Nolan’s trilogy comes to a ripping and extremely satisfactory end as Batman (Christian Bale) comes out of self-imposed retirement to take on vile and evil Bane (Tom Hardy). Both characters have a hell of a back story that perfectly explains the pickle they now find themselves in. But surprise of surprises, it’s Anne Hathaway as slinky, leather-clad Selina (you can call her Catwoman) who regularly steals the show.

MS 2012

December 26, 2012 - January 9, 2013 FREETIME

23

FLIGHT What starts out as the most hellish airplane ride in movie history turns into an insightful character study of a man fighting a losing battle with the bottle. Denzel Washington doesn’t do bad performances, and his string of great portrayals remains intact with his addled Whip Whitaker, who likes to down a couple of nips, snort a couple of lines, and gulp some pure oxygen before climbing into the cockpit of his 767. Denzel owns the movie, but only when scenes aren’t taken over by a candy man (John Goodman) and a cancer patient (James Badge Dale). HOLY MOTORS There’s this guy named ... well, his name doesn’t matter and, actually, there’s more than one guy. He’s (they’re all) played by French actor Deny Lavant, a small, wiry fellow who’s got a hell of a face, and has for a few decades starred in films, including this one, by director Leos Carax. Lavant’s characters go out each morning on “assignments,” in various disguises, acting out other peoples’ whims ... or something. It’s a dazzling, dizzying, frightening, funny French film, and its endings are fantastique.

FLIGHT

THE IMPOSSIBLE The deadly tsunami that hit the Philippines in 2004 kicks off this tale of a vacationing family trying to survive its wrath. Like Flight, the destruction is right at the beginning of the film, while the rest of it deals with physical and emotional consequences. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor are the parents trying to hold themselves and their kids together, after they’ve all been torn apart. The early visual effects are horrifying, some of the following story is harrowing, the latter parts make you believe there’s hope for all of us. LINCOLN Impatient critics have labeled Steven Spielberg’s hunk of history too talky and too long. Obviously they’re not listening to the words, and their underwear is on too tight. Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner give us a fascinating look at the last few months of Lincoln’s life, when he was trying to end the War Between the States and pass the Emancipation Proclamation. Daniel Day-Lewis gives Lincoln a world-weary look and posture, but practically walks on air when he gets into storytelling mode. An Oscar nod should go to Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens.

HOLY MOTORS

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS No title has ever better described what a movie is about. And the folks featured here – Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits, Christopher Walken, among them – fit the bill, with big guns or bad tempers or thirsts for booze that can’t be quenched. Oddly, among all of the violence, this thing is damn funny. Just like writer-director Martin McDonagh’s previous black comedy In Bruges. SKYFALL It’s unofficially referred to as “Bond 23,” but aficionados are calling it #1, as in the best of the Bond bunch (with the exception, of course, of everybody’s real favorite, Goldfinger). Daniel Craig broods and brawls his way through this Sam Medes-directed entry, which zooms in on a number of relationships: Bond and M (Judi Dench), M and the villainous Silva (Javier Bardem, curiously looking like Charlie Watts); Bond and the new Q (Ben Whishaw). Loads of action, and a strain of melancholia. ZERO DARK THIRTY Kathryn Bigelow’s tense, exciting story of the CIA’s hunt for Osama bin Laden is about a lot more than that twisting, turning, oftentimes dead-ended pursuit. It’s just as much about the real person – here called Maya (Jessica Chastain) – who dedicated her career to that goal. It’s also an opportunity to watch a great actress transform, over a couple of hours, from a meek character to a grim, determined operative. Confession: It’s my second favorite film of the year.
