Scott H. Biram & Lydia Loveless

Abilene Bar & Lounge | June 13 In support of a new album titled Bad Ingredients, Scott H. Biram comes to town. Calling himself a “Dirty Old One Man Band, â€? Scott’s sound lashes together blues, hillbilly and country with punk and metal as he sings, yodels, and growls his way through original tunes in shows from coast to coast‌The country/ folk rock artist Lydia Loveless has been described as being like Patsy Cline or Loretta Lynn with a fair share of punk rock thrown in. Her “blast-it-to-the-back-of-theroomâ€? voice has made the 21 year old a force to be reckoned with.

by Mark Tichenor There’s a beer for every palate and a beer for every mood. Sometimes you might want the burly double IPA, but other occasions might call for something a bit more subtle. It’s at those times when you might reach for a Kriek. The old farmhouse breweries of Belgium make lambic, a light, prickly ale that’s left out in the open after brewing, allowing the wild local yeast to settle in and fer ment. The breweries are often, quite literally, old barns, and the barrels into which the finished wort is poured may have been reused for the better part of a century. The resulting beer is punishingly tart, and the uncontrolled concoction of yeasts throw off all kinds of funkinducing phenols and esters, so the brewers add fruit (traditionally raspberries or cherries) to round out the flavor. Kriek is the cher r y version. Drinkers of fruit beers, especiall y those of the male persuasion, have to deal with certain stereotypes. While some lambics can be, oh hell, let’s just say it, “girly,” the style can span a gamut of flavors and carry a complexity difficult to equal in beerdom. Depending on the producer, kriek can vary from supersweet and soda-like to mellow and almost creamy in character, to comically tart. Unsurprisingly, it’s the sweeter, cleaner, sodalike Lindemann’s Kriek that gets the lion’s share of sales volume in the USA. Brightly colored and highly carbonated, Lindemann’s aims to produce a beverage that appeals to young, frequently female, taste buds. It is, however, readily available and makes a nice apertif. Mort Subite, by Brouwerij De

Keersmaker, is somewhere in the middle. The ruddy, nearly rustcolored brew leads with a sweet cher r y nose and just a touch of champagne effer vescence . The character imparted by the cherries is more essence than dominant flavor and the beer rolls off the back of your tongue in a pleasantly sour wash that recedes to nothing after only a few seconds. Refreshing, without being cloying or sugary. Boon Kriek, f rom Brouwer ij Boon,is a pinnacle of the style, boasting a round, creamy character that buoys up the fresh aspect of cherries rather than the sweet. No fruity beer stereotype applies to Boon’s complex kriek; it would be at home in the beer fridge of a bourbon or single-malt lover. Unfortunately, it is all-too rare in upstate New York. Cantillon Brewery, of Brussels, is famed for its challenging, mouthpuckeringly astringent lambics. Its yeast creates a tart wash that manages to stay light enough so as not to detract from the Schaerbeek cherries within. It’s also the funkiest in our list, with a pronounced musty character and an aroma that many lambic lovers find exquisite. Some others, however, think it smells like sweaty gym socks. Wherever you fall on the scale, kriek pushes the perception of what beer is, and what it can be, and few styles are as evocative of time and place. If you’ve ever had the good fortune of drinking one in Belgium, a bottle purchased back home will instantly transport you back to Flanders’ fields. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. A TALK WITH “FOR GREATER GLORY’S” ANDY GARCIA By Ed Symkus Andy Garcia isn’t afraid to admit that, before signing on to star in For Greater Glory, he never heard of Enrique Gorostieta Velarde or the story of how the retired Mexican general came out of a humdrum postarmy life in the mid-1920s to lead rebels against the Mexican political regime that was intent on repressing Catholicism. To play the real-life character, who Garcia refers to simply as Gorostieta, he studied the detailpacked script, poured over the information and letters sent to him by the man’s family, and read the book La Cristiada. “You begin to research the guy, what he stood for, what his history was,” said Garcia. One of the things he found, and that comes clear in the film, is that there was controversy around Gorostieta back then,

•••••••••••••••••••••

and there still is now. It’s mostly around the question of whether he was a hero or a well-paid mercenary. “He was a decorated general with the Mexican Revolution, so he is part of Mexican history,” said Garcia, kind of avoiding that question. “The movie’s not just about him,” he continued. “It’s also about the people that hired him, and about the different factions – the guerrilla groups – that came up in fighting for the right to be able to practice their religion, and how this guy was called upon to organize those groups into an army.” But, he was asked, could he be called a well-paid mercenary? “Well, anybody in the army is paid,” he said. Uncomfor table pause . But was he a mercenary? “No, I wouldn’t say he was a mercenary,” he said. “I can see that someone might describe him that way. But does a mercenary truly believe in the cause or does he just believe in the cash?” OK, but did he take the job more because he missed the excitement of his old army life or because he believed in freedom?

www.FREETIME.com •

23

“I think he took the cash to provide for his family. I also think he was unfulfilled in his current life. He did miss the old life, and then the opportunity arose – ‘Oh, I can get back in the saddle again’ – and even though he wasn’t religious, he believed in the cause. So I think it’s a bit of both.” The film gives us a look at both of those lives. The one where, after going into post-Mexican Revolution exile, he’s working as an engineer at a soap factory, kind of coasting along, and the one where he literally is back in the saddle, back on fire, ready to lead a charge against the brutal Mexican government. Within the film, Garcia, 56, with a large list of film and TV credits – including a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his part in The Godfather: Part III – to his credit, gets to stretch his acting chops. His scenes range from peaceful family interludes to one-on-one discussions with military friends and foes to a grandiose Braveheart-like speech to his soldiers while on horseback. “It’s all the same,” he said of the ar t of acting. “You’re living the character. By then, you hope to be inside of it, and you’ve made an emotional connection to what’s going on. The first thing you have to get to is ‘I am Gorostieta.’ You have to completely believe that, have no doubt about it.” Garcia had ridden horses before, so he just had to get back into the swing of it to look right this time out. He had also fired plenty of guns in previous films (one of his first roles was in The Untouchables), so he just had to get used to the older style weapons in this film. Oddl y, one of the biggest challenges for Garcia, who is a longtime cigar smoker, was to realistically handle and light and smoke a pipe, which Gorostieta does only in the early, quieter parts of the film, before switching to cigars out on the battlefield. “The first thing you do in pipe smoking lessons is buy a pipe,” said Garcia, laughing. “In fact, the film’s production designer knew about pipes. When we got to Mexico, he had some pipes laid out for me, then we sat down and he gave me a tutelage on the process of pipe smoking. To light a pipe is different from lighting a cigar. It’s much more difficult.”

24 FREETIME May 30 - June 13, 2012

film

By Tom Cannon & Ed Symkus

Opening June 8

CLIPS

First Position A documentary for those who love dance, and want to know where future stars will come from. The film goes into the lives of six dancers, between the ages of 9 and 19, from all over the world, who enter an international competition called the Youth America Grand Prix.

Darling Companion

Opening June 1 Battlefield America Yet another big-budget movie about underdog kids who are whipped into competitive shape by an outsider coach, who has plenty of faith in them. But don’t worry. There are no sports involved in this one. It’s about the “underground dance competition circuit.” OK, maybe you should worry. Darling Companion The title of the first Lawrence Kasdan film since his 2003 adaptation of Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher is after a great Lovin’ Spoonful song. The movie is a dysfunctional family drama about an unhappy wife (Diane Keaton) who finds a friend in a dog. Things don’t go too well when her husband (Kevin Kline), a source of some of that unhappiness, accidentally loses the dog. Rumor is that there’s a strong Keaton performance.

For Greater Glory It’s a based-on-fact story, set in the 1920s, of Enrique Gorostieta Velarde (Andy Garcia), a military hero who got out, went, against his will, into private business, and was called back to lead rebel troops against the government in a battle over religious freedom. It’s an epic film, with a Western flair (there are horses and guns!), and some terrific acting from Garcia, Ruben Blades, and Oscar Isaac. Snow White and the Huntsman The folks who made this one might be a little on edge, since Mirror Mirror, another Snow White story, released just a couple of months ago, flopped like a fish. True, this take on the Grimm fairytale goes in a rather different direction: When the wicked queen (Charlize Theron) orders the assassination of Snow White (Kristen Stewart), her would-be killer (Chris Hemsworth) instead trains her to take revenge on the queen.

First Position

•••••••••••••••••••••

The Intouchables A major success in its native France, this based-on-facter is about wealthy, carefree Philippe (Francois Cluzet), whose life is drastically changed after a paragliding accident. He’s to be cared for by Driss (Omar Sy), a young man with, you know, a “troubled past.” You want uplifting? Here’s your film.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted The quartet of accidental travelers – Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman (voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, and David Schwimmer – continue the long trek back to their home in a New York zoo, but stop off in Europe for a while to hide out in a traveling circus. Prometheus Director Ridley Scott made a huge name for himself in 1979 with the release of Alien, which freaked the bejeebers out of audiences. Though most info on the (supposed) prequel is under wraps, some sources hint that the film focuses on the big skeletal figure seen near the beginning of Alien, and tells the story of what happened to him (her, it).
