“R & B Explosion”

Auditorium Theatre | thru April 29 This Rochester engagement of Jersey Boys, winner of both the Tony Award for “Best Musical” and the Grammy Award for “Best Musical Recording,” finds local audiences enjoying performances throughout the month of April. The show has been breaking box office records across North America as it tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, delighting audiences with the group’s memorable music, performed to perfection. Fans can’t seem to get enough of Frankie, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi - the group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks who became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sound, and sold 175 million records worldwide - all before they were thirty! The show features all their favorites – “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Oh What a Night” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

Craft breweries make their bones by marketing big, unique beers to big, unique individuals. High alcohol levels, forceful flavors and innovative ingredients put many great brews on the map, but remain the characteristics of a niche product. Most of the “great” American beers, are a bit much for the casual beer drinker to have out on the porch with the sun beating down. Conversely, most “mainstream” craft beer styles, brown and pale ales come to mind, bore hardcore beer lovers to death. It’s hard for a brewer to win. Three Heads Brewing, however, thinks they’ve found the perfect formula, and it is “The Common Man.” Brewery co-owner Geoff Dale describes it as the beer that will unite the craft beer lover and casual drinker. Time will tell if he’s right, but it only takes one sip to discover that the Heads are onto something extraordinary. The Common Man blends an audacious idea with an “everyman” sensibility, yet with enough aggression to keep each sip extremely interesting. When Dale told me the beer was a California Common I was skeptical. The style originated in mid-19th century San Francisco, where brewers, out of necessity due to lack of refrigeration, had to ferment lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures. The prime example of this style is the astoundingly milquetoast Anchor Steam Beer, and other breweries’ attempts to jazz up the style either come off like a Ford Pinto with a hood-scoop or revel in the nasty off-flavors possible when this volatile method of fermentation goes horribly, terribly wrong. Damned if they didn’t pull it off. The Common Man is a great beer. It is a superlative beer, and will ser ve as my primar y summer refresher. And I’m not just saying that just because Dale drove me around on the launch day pub crawl and bought me a poop-ton of it.

www.FREETIME.com •

The beer pours a deep golden color, with no trace of thinness, nor any dark hues that would lead a casual craft beer drinker to question its refreshment potential. Slightly aromatic, the beer presents a bit of plum and raspberry in the nose with a definite hop prickle. It pours enticingly, bubbly with a creamy head that pillows above the rim of the glass. It takes a bit of self-discipline to keep a sip of this beer from turning into a gulp. The light body does not come at the expense of character. It’s a mix of uncomplicated malt and light fruit hints that mix together extremely well, creating a powerful flavor that easily recedes from the taste buds, with a lingering hint of blackberry on the exhale. The Common Man finishes with a Kölsch-like hop snap. It doesn’t bludgeon you with a ton of bitterness or bury you in grapefruit. Just a wave of gentle herbal bitterness that doesn’t need to do anything more than serve as a lead-in to the next sip. At 5.5% alcohol by volume, The Common Man can fit into the common appetite. It’s 3 Heads’ lowest-alcohol beer to date, and, while a touch on the strong side for a session beer, remains friendly enough to encourage the enjoyment of more than one. There’s no doubt that The Common Man will have to overcome some prejudicial notions about gravity and alcoholic strengths to be accepted by the big-beer community, but it’s worthy of consideration among the greats. As for everyday beer drinkers, this is the beer that will turn your light-swilling cousin on to craft brewing. If The Common Man were slightly less awesome, it might go the way of your typical summer seasonal, faded by August and possibly re-released at the same time next year. As it is, I think this beer could become the next New Belgium Fat Tire. It’s that good, and that accessible. In that respect, there’s nothing common about it. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. SCREEN

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS Written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard; directed by Drew Goddard Lionsgate • Rated R

By Ed Symkus Yes, good things do come to those who wait. This horror film about – bear with me now – a quintet of good-looking young folks who head off to an isolated cabin, where blood will flow, is not your typical horror film with a plot like that. Yes, it’s gory, but it’s also funny and smart and original and, by the end, pretty darn whacked out. Made three years ago under the auspices of MGM, it was shelved when the company started having big-time money hassles. After finally getting the go for release, it was again halted because someone in power decided it would be better if it went through the 3D transfer process. The punchlines: MGM filed for bankruptcy; someone came to their senses, and left the film in 2D; Lionsgate picked up distribution. And yes, it’s good. So now, we’ve got an established couple, Curt and Jules (a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth and Anna Hutchison), a blind date

couple, Dana and Holden (Kristen Connolly and Jesse Williams), and fifth wheel Mar ty (Fran Kranz), who also happens to be the group’s resident pot head. For all of you trivia nuts, Kranz’s first film role, a decade ago, was as the red-nosed clown at the end of Donnie Darko. OK, back on topic. We’ve seen this kind of thing many times: Jump in the Winnebago, drive down lonely roads to a cabin and accompanying lake where there’s no cell phone service, start getting picked off. What we haven’t seen, right up front, is the revelation of who is responsible for what’s happen-

ing. But you sure do this time. Of course, in this spoiler-free review, it’s going to be difficult to give away much more than that. So let’s go with this: There’s an annual “experiment” that’s conducted by an unnamed group of people (headed up by Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford), most of whom wear white lab coats, pretty much all of whom seem to be having fun, even though we, the viewers, realize that, before long, blood is going to flow. The lab coat people know it, too, but they’re more interested in gambling on the experiment’s outcome than in any kind of ethics.

disc. 1916 seamlessly mixes covers and originals as each song draws

you in more and more with addictive hooks and riffs that are inspired by, or drawn from traditional Irish stories. Hard drinking songs (“… Grog”) sit along side political songs such as “Back Home in Derry” (the city of the infamous Bloody Sunday), written by political prisoner Bobby Sands with music adapted from a Gordon Lightfoot song. It’s one of the classic Irish rebel songs and 1916 does it justice. Other songs such as “Slainte,” “Louse House,” and “Join or Die” keep the energy level high throughout with only a brief breather or two.

DISC 1916 A Drop of the Pure By Scott Gudell Rip a few pages from the songbooks of Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly or the Pogues, throw ‘em into a blender and create a potent mix of sounds all your own. Spill it out and you get a dozen spiked songs that make up the band 1916’s debut CD, A Drop of the Pure. The opening cut, “All For Me Grog,” is a fierce song that immediately raises the flag of intensity and signals the direction of the

They also really get into it by watching everything that happens in the cabin on a battery of video screens, courtesy of tiny cameras hidden all over the place. There’s so much rampant video, it’s reminiscent of watching any number of early, video-filled Brian DePalma films. But DePalma hasn’t yet gotten into dark, dank basements or blood rituals or – dare I say it? – zombies. Joss Whedon is responsible for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly and Dollhouse, and Drew Goddard has written, among other things, Cloverfield. The twisted stuff in Cabin is right up their joined-at-the-hip alleys. So it’s interesting that, aside from a few blatant hints of bad things to come, the first half of the film sticks mostly to character studies, of the five protagonists, as well as the two main villains (or maybe they should be called experimenters). It’s right about at the halfway point where things take a grim turn, eventually get worse, and finally go nutzoid. There’s plenty of satisfactory explanation, but all you need to know going in is that, according to the slowly-turning-desperate lab coat folks, “something big is at stake.” But they’re not the ones being slaughtered, although fans of retribution aren’t going to be too unhappy with certain turns of certain events. Some people are referring to Cabin as a kind of Five Little Indians. I’ll take it a step further. I’ll call it Se ven Billion Little Indians.

American Reunion By Tom Cannon & Ed Symkus

Opening April 6

Opening April 13

American Reunion The American Pie gang returns for one more round of hijinx when they all arrive back in town for a high school reunion. As always, the plot is somehow hinged around someone losing their virginity. As always, there will be some great stuff from Jennifer Coolidge as Stifler’s mom.

The Cabin in the Woods This isn’t your typical youngpeople-trapped-in-an-isolatedcabin type of horror film. Directed by Cloverfield director Drew Goddard, and co-written by Goddard and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon, it turns past similar movies inside out, keeps things kinda bloody, adds an off beat sense of humor, and makes it all entertainingly complicated with a bizarre plot about mysterious lab folks running an experiment.

Titanic 3D Same movie that was released in 1997, same dialogue about being King of the World, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and the rest. But director James Cameron has pushed a magic button to convert it into 3D. With other directors, there might be some concern, but Cameron is a 3D maven, so even if you didn’t like the movie the first time, it should at least look a lot better now.

Lockout Sometime way in the future, criminals are locked away in outer space prisons. Which is where the daughter of the president is visiting when some of those criminals kidnap her. What to do? Release the fellow (Guy Pearce) who was wrongly convicted of espionage against America...if he can save her.

The Three Stooges The Three Stooges This is dangerous material to mess with. These guys are icons to a lot of people, and have been for decades. But maybe the Farrelly Brothers know what to do, since they admit to being hardcore fans. With Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes, and Will Sasso as Moe, Larry, and Curly ...and Larry David as a nun!

The Raid: Redemption Using video game sensibilities, this Indonesian-language film, made by a Welsh director, goes for as much violence as it can possibly dish up, in a story of a SWAT team that gets trapped in a building that’s overrun by mob types. Let’s put it this way: If you’re a fan of vicious knife fights, done in close-up, look no further.
