German House | Apr. 25 The Reverend Horton Heat has played its high-octane blend of rockabilly punk with everyone from The Cramps to Smashing Pumpkin. The Reverend (aka Jim Heath on vocals & guitar) began as a guitar-playing orphan prodigy in Eastern Texas. After years of playing music on the streets, he joined with Jimbo Wallace (stand-up bass) and Scott Churilla (drums); and in 1995 they recorded a debut LP, Liquor in the Front. The Reverend went on to release It’s Martini Time, Space Heater, Spend A Night In The Box, Lucky 7, Revival, We Three Kings and Laughin’ and Cryin’ with the Reverend Horton Heat. After a wild 20-year journey, the Reverend and company are still building their already devoted cult following with their signature country-flavored punkabilly sound and onstage antics that have made them famous. The latest from Rev. Horton Heat is a DVD, 25 to Life.

Temple Beth El | Apr. 26 A dynamic performer, lyrical composer and accomplished guitarist, Rabbi Joe Black has produced several critically acclaimed albums of Jewish music, a songbook, and two videos. His latest is Sabbatical, an adult album, as is the LP, Leave A Little Bit Undone. He’s also recorded two children’s recordings and his songs are widely sung in religious school and at youth events.

The Inaugural Induction Gala of the Rochester Music Hall of Fame finds many of Rochester’s greatest being honored during a special night of ceremony and music. Following are the inductees into The Class of 2012.... •Renowned jazz trumpeter/f lugelhornist Chuck Mangione.....Chuck has been playing professionally for over four decades now. His celebrated releases include Friends & Love, Land of Make Believe, Chase the Clouds Away, Bellavia, Feels So Good, and Children of Sanche. Chuck will be performing at this Gala, joined by his brother Gap Mangione and Gap’s New Band. •Joe English, the for mer drummer/vocalist for Paul McCartney’s band, Wings and the rock/jazz group, Sea Level.... In addition to his work with Wings and Sea Level, Joe has also enjoyed an extensive career with his own Joe English Band, releasing eight recordings under that name in the 1980s. He will be offering a solo performance at the ceremony. •Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer, Gene Cornish...Gene took the pop scene by storm in the 60’s and early 70’s as a member of the band, The Rascals. Currently a Professor of Music at Boston University, Dwyer, at age 90, will perform here with pianist Cherry Tsang. •Charles Strouse, also a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, and one of America’s most prolific composers. To Drink Locally or Globally? By Mark Tichenor Finger Lakes Region beer lovers rejoice! Another legendary brewery is entering our area. Founders Brewing of Grand Rapids, Michigan, will be on tap in Rochester this May. That’s a big win; Founders’ beer is consistently some of the best and most highly rated in the country. Currently it’s sought after by beer traders, and many a R o c h e s te r i a n visitor to the Midwest is pestered to bring a trunkload home for friends. But the imminent arrival of Founders also gives some pause for thought and reflection about our own local beer, as well as the direction of the craft beer industry. National, or at least regional, distribution is crucial to an ambitious craft brewer y’s success. A beermaking operation is an expensive small business to start up and run, and many places simply don’t have the market size in their home regions to expand. Getting the beer to other markets is often the necessary solution. We crazy beer lovers benefit from that necessity, and from the fact that there’s a mad-efficient distribution structure already set up to handle it. Because of this, you can walk into the right smalltown pub and pick up a menu of the best American beers. Stone Brewing, Green Flash, Victory, Lagunitas, and now Founders. It’s a dilemma just to choose. But there’s a downside as well. Having easy access to beers from every region makes the beers, well, a bit less special. Things homogenize; they’re no longer rare treats, rather just some more beers on the tapline. It also takes away some of the joys of vacation. Travel is a bit less fun when the unique tastes of a city on the other side of the continent are familiar

It prevents complacency among our own scene and awakens the creative fire in our local brewmasters. In that sense, it’s gratifying to see how adeptly our guys can hang with the big boys. From Jamestown to Canandaigua, brewers in Western New York and the Finger Lakes are producing more exciting beer than ever before, beer that can stack up, sip for sip, to anything the glitzy rock star breweries can keg and ship. So bring it on, Founders Brewing. We Rochester beer lovers welcome you with open arms and open taps. We will rejoice in your deliciousness. Just don’t be surprised if, at some point, a Finger Lakes brewery succeeds in creating something just a tad more special. THE LUCKY ONE Written by Will Fetters; directed by Scott Hicks Warner Bros. Pictures Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus For some reason, novelist Nicholas Sparks sells a whole lot of books, to a mostly female readership. Some fans call them romances, but Sparks refers to them as love stories. They’re filled with longing and sadness and sentiment and, often, death by drowning. For likely the same reason that his books sell well, the movies that they’re turned into – The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Message in a Bottle, among them – bring hordes of mostly females to the cinema. The latest is The Lucky One, and there’s a chance that Sparks, and the film’s makers, might not be all that lucky this time out. It doesn’t matter that the story is sappy and manipulative, or that the prose isn’t of the most believable variety. And, yes, his ardent fans know that a movie is a m ov i e a n d a book is a book, and, h e y, s o m e times there are going to be differences.

But this lame excuse for a bad Hallmark movie takes some inexcusable steps by altering the source material past the point of damage. Screenwriter Will Fetters (Re me mber Me), apparently with the blessings of Sparks, has left out so many major ingredients, tossed in so many new ones, and generally just changed things around so much that devotees of the book will be angry, and newcomers (but will anyone who hasn’t read the book go to see this?) will be puzzled as to what’s going on. Confession: I read the book. It’s cer tainl y not my cup of tea, but it sure is better than what it’s been turned into. In a nutshell, both film and book are about Logan, a Marine who, while stationed in Iraq, finds a photo of a woman that turns out to be a lucky charm. When he returns home to the States, he tries to find her, with thoughts of thanking her. Problem: He doesn’t know her name or where she lives. Solution: He walks f rom Colorado to Louisiana and , yup, finds her. She’s a single mom with one of those “adorable” moppet kids and a beer-swilling ex-husband cop with a hair trigger temper on top of a jealous streak. So what do you think? Will Logan settle down in town? Of course. Will he tell this woman, whose name is Beth, why he’s come? Nope.

For too many clichéd reasons, he just can’t seem to. Will the little tyke take to him? Certainly. Will the nasty ex-husband with the gun and badge become upset? Natch! And I haven’t even mentioned Grandma, who’s kind of doddering in the book, but chirpy as all get-out in the movie, or Zeus, the German Shepherd who made the long walk with Logan. Zeus, for those who know the character, has been given short shrift here. He’s the most heroic character in the book. Now he’s relegated to being not much more than the good doggy. Zac Efron is actually quite good as Logan. The character requires him to give something close to a one-note performance. He does, and it works, as does the hint that something else could at any time come boiling up from inside of him. The same isn’t true for Taylor Schilling as Beth. Her acting is f lat, bland. She’s just not a very appealing character, coming across as a woe-is-me type, rather than someone who would a ttract someone who walked all that way for her. Blythe Danner adds the right amount of comic relief and voice of reason sensibility to the grandmother role, and though Jay R. Ferguson has some menacing moments as the cop, he plays it too broadly, touching into areas of caricature. The acting is accompanied, visually and aurally, by a plethora of scenes that are bathed in golden sunlight and by an endless stream of schlock pop – Joshua Radin, Jules Larson, Brandi Carlile , you get the idea. But here’s the proof tha t this is a stinker. I saw an early screening in a theater packed with critics as well as civilians. There was a tentative kissing scene (I’m sure you can figure out who it was between). The audience snickered. There was an extremely chaste sex scene (same participants). The audience laughed out loud. There was a rickety tree house and an impending storm and that moppet and “terror” in the air. Wow, I can’t even bring myself to tell you what the audience did with that one. But I’m sure it wasn’t what the author or the filmmakers hoped for.

Safe Jason Statham stars in another action-shoot-’em-up, this time as a former secret agent who must not only rescue a kidnapped girl, but also take on some New York City officials who have gone bad, and the Russian Mafia. Don’t worry, as always, he’s got a big gun and knows how to use it.

The FREETIME Magazine Baseball Buddies will honor local youth baseball teams at all 72 Rochester Red Wings and 37 Empire State Yankees home games during the 2012 season. Members of each selected team will be introduced along with their coaches. The youngsters will be invited to stand on the field next to the Red Wings for the playing of the National Anthem.

All the individuals of the selected team will receive a Baseball Cap compliments of FREETIME Magazine and the Red Wings. Ten tickets will be provided for the team. Additional tickets may be purchased at a group discount. Teams may also register by signing up at all Red Wings home games during the 2012 season. Teams will be contacted by a Red Wings representative to schedule their special night.
