Time For The Wearin’ O’ The Green by Susan Mary Margaret Dunne Cannon

This holiday is my personal favorite – the one that I wait all year for. Our entire clan gathers in celebration. Together, we enjoy great food & drink, Celtic music, and more! However, you don’t have to be Irish to love St. Patrick’s Day. Not only is it a sign that spring is right around the corner; it also provides a chance to dress in warm knit sweaters; to drink green beer and Guinness; listen to great Celtic music; watch our community’s grandest parade; and savor traditional foods like corned beef & cabbage, soda bread and Irish stew! Be sure to enjoy several of the special events listed below; and read through the advertisements in this issue to see what’s happening at your favorite restaurant, club or pub. Three Heads Brewing Looks Back On A Year In The Business By Mark Tichenor In early 2010, three friends took a giant leap. Buoyed by unshakable confidence that the beer they brewed at home was world-class, Dan Nothnagle, Todd Dirrgl and Geoff Dale surmounted the last in a long line of bureaucratic hurdles and Three Heads Brewing was born. Fourteen months later, Dale seems pleasantly dumbstruck by how far his beer has come. Not only is it all over Rochester, but you can even get a bottle of Three Heads in Chicago or Boston, where it sells steadily despite being a relative unknown on shelves full of Dogfish Heads and Victorys. For Dale, the growth of Three Heads is a journey, and he still has a long way to go. “I feel like, we’ve finally reached the point where we’re not getting surprised. We’ve sort of dealt with how the industry works,” he explains, reflecting back on the challenges of building the business from the ground up. “The first year was sort of tough because we all dealt with stuff we haven’t done before.” Dale is quick to praise his local community and retailers for being supportive as they learned how to schedule their brews, get label approval, and cope with initial demand that was higher, and lasted longer, than projected. He credits that to the high quality of his beer, and to being friendly, approachable and genuine. “Look at me,” he says. “I’m in a dirty hoodie because I’m out delivering kegs. My sales pitch is,

we’re drinking some beers,” he chuckles. Three Heads partnership with CB’s Brewery also factors into their success. Although long term plans are to open their own facility, all their beer is currently brewed at CB’s in Honeoye Falls. “We’ve really strengthened our partnership with them. We’ve become their biggest customer and they’ve invested in new equipment to meet our demand,” Dale says. Until this point, Three Heads beer has been big and on the strong side (their flagship IPA, “The Kind,” is that dangerous sort of beer that might not pack the hardest raw alcohol punch, but compensates by being deceptively easy to drink). The guys aren’t shy about whimsical flavors (the bacony smoked-maple “Bromigo”), or style combinations (“Loopy” is an oatmeal-red ale). Every quarter sees a fun, experimental and often downright exciting new seasonal beer. With their next release, “The Common Man,” Three Heads is ready to move in a different direction. “The Common Man” will be a take on a celebrated American style that’s really only regularly brewed by San Fransisco’s Anchor Brewer y. Anchor calls it Steam Beer (and no one else can or they’ll hear from Anchor’s lawyers), but the broader term is California Common Ale. “Now we’re coming out with our accessible beer,” Dale explains, and he’s not afraid to speak boldly. “It is the beer that is going to unite the everyday beer drinker and the beer snob. It’s a beer that will cross all those boundaries. It’s going to change who we are as a company.” Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. 24 FREETIME March 7 - March 21, 2012

inner VIEW

Roy Knyrim: The Man Behind SyFy’s “MONSTER MAN” By Scott Miller As a special FX and make up effects artist on critically acclaimed films (Gods and Monsters, Ed Wood, The Abyss), plus work on television series (Weird Science, Profiler, Matthe w Blackheart: Monster Smasher) to directing videos and films, former Rochesterian Roy Knyrim (pronounced Kuh-neer-im) thought he had accumulated a pretty extensive list of job titles in his 20 year career in Hollywood. But, starting last summer, he added an unexpected new job description: “reality star.” As of March 14 he will be one of the main elements of the SyFy channel’s new reality show, Monster Man. The show will follow the day to day exploits of Roy, his friend and employee Cleave Hall (“The Monster Man”) and Cleave’s family as they make monsters and create special effects at Knyrim’s Los Angeles-based SOTA F/X work shop. When asked how he became

involved with the show, the story proves what it takes to get noticed in Hollywood as Knyrim laughingl y recounts the day. “Cleave and I had been working together for Gurney Productions (Monster Man’s production company) doing a show called I Survived, making a bunch of animals, a shark, a bunch of jellyfish and we also did a humpback whale. When it wa s f i n i s h e d Cleave called me up and says, ‘I can’t get this thing (the whale) down to set,’ and I said ‘Just strap it to the top of your hearse.’ So he straps it to the top of his hearse and goes down to set after he had been out all night at some goth club, and the producers see him and say ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to do a show about this guy!’” Things moved quickly when Cleave returned from the shoot. “He came back and said, ‘They want to do a show about me, can I use your shop?’ And I said, ‘Sure you can do whatever you want’ and Gurney came in and shot a little sizzle (demo) reel mainly about Cleave, and they really liked it,” remembers Knyrim. From there the pilot quickly developed and included not only Cleave, but his ex-wife Sonia;

daughters, Constance and Elora; as well as Roy and his girlfriend, Cindy Miller, who’s also the shop manager at SOTA F/X. But more about the man who drives a hearse as his everyday car and looks like a cross between Riff Raff from Rocky Horror and Robert Smith of The Cure. I ask Roy if Cleave is the real deal or if it’s just a ploy for attention. “No, that’s him,” Knyrim verifies. “He’s 100% being himself in this. That’s what’s really cool about him, it’s him. Cleave being this zany, crazy guy, that is Cleave.” With Face/Off (SyFy’s other FX-based reality show) and now Monster Man, I ask if this is a revival of “the old school” way of doing effects and does he think his show will be inf luential in the same way Star Wars and the Universal monster movies once were. “I hope so. One of the running themes of the show is going to be practical versus digital. We’ve been very fortunate at SOTA F/X to stay alive during the computer revolution. We’ve had to evolve over the last 15 years as computers have done more and more. But we’ve been getting called for more and more stuff, (including) doing a lot of live stage show work for Insane Clown Posse, Alice Cooper, Devo and bands like that.” Knyrim continues, “I still think practical effects as far as putting prosthetics on actors will be around forever. I don’t think every actor is going to want their face replaced digitally, and I’m shocked some actors like Bill Nighy (Davey Jones) in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Ralph Fiennes (Lord Valdemort) in Harry Potter did-that’s not even their face. Their face has been painted over. At least with a prosthetic it’s still you, so I don’t think that that’s going to take over completely yet.”

Roy on set with his girlfriend and shop manager Cindy Miller, and the “Monster Man,” Cleave Hall.

•••••••••••••••••••••

www.FREETIME.com •

The camera being on all the time is a blessing, not the curse some might think it would be. Does he fear giving away too much, either professionally or personally? Roy only sees the benefits. “The show is very much about the shop. It doesn’t follow us or Cleave home, it’s about us working and the relationships here at work. As far as us building stuff, I hope that we can educate people. I hope that some kid in the middle of the country somewhere sees our show and he’s the next Rick Baker or next Dick Smith (both FX industry legends). That would be great. When I was a kid there were so many cool make up effects in movies that made you wonder ‘How did they do that?’ And now I feel bad people watch a movie and there’s no more mystery. How did they do that?...they did it with a computer.” As far as being “the man behind the Monster Man” Knyrim is ok with that, “It’s Cleave’s show but it’s my shop. I’m like the dad on American Chopper making sure everything gets done. For the most part what you’re seeing on the show is real. It’s just us. Nobody’s telling us what to do, directing us or feeding us lines or anything.” Although he admits to watching reality shows like Face/Off, Auction Hunters and Pawn Stars, did he ever see it as his next career move? “No,” he responds emphatically. “I never thought I wanted to be in front of the camera, but it is pretty cool I have to admit.” One of the coolest moments turned out to be in the last episode they shot for season one in which they work with Knyrim’s childhood idols, the band Devo. “Ger r y (Devo co-founder and friend Gerald Casale) wanted me to direct a music video for the band. So to be able to direct this video was a big thing for me. I can die happy, a definite bucket list thing. What’s really cool is, because it was filmed for the show, I’m seeing one of the happiest days of my life on television.” With his new found exposure I mention a possible fringe benefiteveryone finally learning how to spell his last name, but it sounds like it’s going to be an uphill battle. “A couple of week’s ago IMDB. com changed the spelling of my last name for no apparent reason,” Knyrim recalls. “But that’s ok, everyone calls me Roy Sota anyway.” Editor’s Note: Monster Man premieres Wednesday, March 14 on the SyFy channel at 11:00pm.

March 7 - March 21, 2012 FREETIME

SCREEN

JOHN CARTER Written by Andrew Stanton, Mark Andrews, Michael Chabon; directed by Andrew Stanton Walt Disney Pictures Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus Anyone who’s caught any of the preview trailers for John Carter might easily think, yeah, another big sci-fi fantasy epic with space

(Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights) and the gorgeous Princess Dejah (Lynn Collins from X-Men Origins: Wolverine); and it’s got the coolest dog, or whatever it is that passes for a dog on Mars, who’s very fast, very ugly, and has a big blue slobbering tongue. Based on the trilogy of Marsbased science fiction novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs (who also created Tarzan), this is the adventure told in the first book A Princess of Mars, about former Confederate Army officer John

and agility are increased because of the planet’s low gravity, so he can leap tall buildings in a single bound ... if there were any tall buildings. The bad news: Remember that Civil War he just got through with on Ear th? Well, there’s been one raging on Mars for a thousand years, and he’s just plopped down in the middle of it. Hold on, there’s more good news: Scantily clad and tough as nails Princess Dejah has been told by her dad (Ciaran Hinds) that the only way to save their city of Helium is for her to marry Sab Than (Dominic West), the vile leader of the Zordangans. But when she meets handsome (and soon shirtless) Captain Carter, she has hopes of finding a way out of that marriage. Hold on, I’ve forgotten that Carter has been captured by the green-skinned, 9-foot-tall, four-

25

armed Tharks, led by Tars Tarkus (voice of Willem Dafoe). Lots of complications, aren’t there? But it’s all neatly told through the vision of Andrew Stanton, who directed the Pixar gems Finding Nemo and WALL-E, and makes his live-action debut here. Stanton gives us a spectacular epic, kicking off with a battle sequence with gladiator-like pirates duking it out in elegant airships (if the Disney folks market these things, I’ve got a special shelf in my office for one), then mixing in tidbits of political intrigue, scientific gobbledygook, shape-shifting villains, and even a brief, but heartbreaking flashback that reveals what turned the oncehappy Carter into a sad, angry loner. A visual treat from beginning to end, the film wisely uses dedicated 3D cameras to focus on depth and massive scope, especially in the battle scenes, even as the script goes out of its way to take an anti-war stance. The only hint of cliché comes with the inclusion of a dastardly side plot concerning the real meaning of the forced marriage. But that’s a small complaint since the rest of the film will make your eyes pop, take your breath away, and get you to laugh out loud.

ships and monsters and huge battles and non-stop action. Been there, done that. Well, here’s a bit of good news: The preview trailers are incredibly misleading. Yes, the movie contains everything that’s in them, and the spaceships, monsters, battles, and action are delivered in stateof-the-art style. But the film has so much more. It’s funny, due to both snarky dialogue and pratfall gags; it’s romantic, featuring a will they or won’t they storyline about the dashing Captain John Carter

Carter. In the book he was a prospector searching for gold in the Old West. In the movie, he’s a cocky troublemaker who’s looking out only for himself, while searching for gold. He finds his legendary cave of gold, where, wouldn’t you know it, a strangely dressed bald guy from another world has been hiding.
