By Sue Cannon It’s here, that special season we lovingly call – Lilac Time! The 2012 Lilac Festival, our annual celebration of spring, runs from May 11 thru 20 in Highland Park; and despite the early heat and late snow, everything is right on schedule! For ten glorious days, from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., the park will be filled with the sights, sounds and smells of this popular event. Highland will overflow with thousands of enthusiastic visitors who are here to view the breathtaking site of more than five hundred varieties of lilacs which fill over twenty-two of the park’s one hundred and fifty-five acres – some 1,200 bushes in all! However, the nearly half-million people who are expected to attend the event will be enjoying more than the flowers! An exotic mix of international foods are offered along with arts and crafts shows, children’s events, a parade, a road race...and top-named entertainers who perform - for FREE! There is limited parking, including handicapped, available on site in two lots - off Goodman St., just south of Highland; and off Elmwood Ave., east of South. On weekends, when those lots are sure to be full, Monroe Community College at 1000 E. Henrietta Road will provide free parking with a shuttle bus ($1 for adults) available to take you to the Festival. Lift-equipped Regional Transit Service shuttle buses will also be on hand. Johnny Winter By Scott Gudell After close to a half-century of performing gritty, authentic music, Johnny Winter’s blues roots run deep. They’ve been refreshed by Muddy Waters, fortified by Chuck Berry, nurtured by T Bone Walker, sparked by Lightning Hopkins and now rise up and sprout new branches as he works with today’s artists. He’s got the proper rootstock since he was born and raised in East Texas. And decades of recording and roadwork has fed

(585-202-3431) •On May 6, a Benefit Concert for the Irish Children’s Program of Rochester is planned at the Main Stage of the Campus Center at St. John Fisher College, 3590 East Avenue. The organization will bring Catholic and Protestant children from Belfast to the Rochester area this summer. The Dady Brothers, Everheart, Wingin’ It, The Dustmen and Bob’s Brothers Band will play;

Roots, his new CD, a collection of eleven duets with primarily younger musicians. As part of the package, Johnny Winter is hitting the road to support it. Like a true road tested musician, Johnny Winter calls from his RV while traveling from a Baton Rouge performance, heading to one of the capitals of the blues, Kansas City. He’ll slowly be working his way north to Rochester for a May show. When asked about inspiration from the old 20th century blues musicians, he mentioned one of the early Texas bluesmen, Lightning Hopkins. “I saw him in Houston once, I was about twenty-two, twenty-three...and I and dancers from Drumcliffe Irish Arts, the Young School of Irish Dance, Boland School of Irish Dace, Francis School of Irish Dance and the Shannonside Ceili Dancers will also perform. (585683-1385) •A concert benefiting the National Center for Missing Children will be presented on May 9 at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N. Water St. featuring Jim Drew & Humble Soul. saw Son House once.” Winter remembers that “Rochester is where (Son House) got rediscovered.” When asked how Winter became part of the well respected, inner circle of top blues musicians, he responds in his easy going southern accent. “I was the first white guy to be voted into the Blues Hall of Fame…that was a great honor.” As an albino, and with a last name of Winter, yeah, he’s buried the needle when you think of “white.” Although the first few albums back in the 1970’s, were concentrated, plugged in blues, later albums were more rock oriented. He also added “producer” to his resume during the 70’s when he produced several albums by Muddy Waters, his favorite bluesmaster. As satisfying as the recording sessions were, Winter says “My favorite memory of Muddy was that he’d make me gumbo at his house in Chicago. It was so hot you could barely eat it…really spicy. All the vegetables were grown in his own garden and he would hand pick them. It was great. Actually, his wife did most of the work. He just gave her instructions and told her what to do,” he clarifies. So he was nurtured in more ways than one by the mighty Muddy Waters! Returning to the performing side of the microphone, Winter

remembers “I liked Bruce (Iglauer, owner of Alligator Records whom Winter recorded for in the 1980’s). We always got along great…except in the studio. We always argued in the studio. He never had the drums the way I wanted them!” So what about Roots, the new CD, which pairs Winter with mainly younger artists? "'Honky Tonk' is one of my favorite tracks. Edgar (Winter, his sax playing brother) and I used to play it together all the time in Tulsa. I like the Susan Tedeschi song (that she performs with him) 'Bright Lights, Big City'. Those are my two favorite on the record even though the radio stations tend to play 'Done Somebody Wrong' (featuring Warren Haynes)." The future seems to point down a similar road. “We’ll probably do another record. We’ll probably do Roots II in a year or so.” His wish list of guest artists is as rich as you can get. “I’d like to have Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Buddy Guy, B. B. King, Dr. John on piano and Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits.” So Winter will bring things full circle as he reaches back to the mid-20th century and adds these and other giants to his latest ‘guest list.’

The Fairport Brewing CompanyWhere Size Does Not Matter By Mark Tichenor Fairport Brewing Company owners Tim Garman and Tom Bullinger are thinking small; really small. With some treasured recipes, lots of passion, and a brewing system they could actually misplace behind the furniture, these middle aged professionals with a homebrewing problem are set to open something tinier than a microbrewery- a nanobrewery? “We’re even smaller than that,” chuckles Garman. “We’re a picobrewery.” That means no trucks, no national distribution deals, and the brewing capacity to ser ve only a small part of the Rochester area market. Garman, who has no intention of leaving his day job in medical sales, likes that arrangement just fine. We’re not aiming to be on the shelves at Wegmans,” he says. “I’m an ‘83 grad of Fairpor t High. We’re about serving Fairport.” Gar man and Bullinger already have a head star t in that department. Bullinger, a homebrewer for 25 years, met Garman in karate class, and passed along his passion for the brewer’s art. They’ve shared homebrew with friends and family and recently conducted a wellreceived tasting at the Fairport Village inn. “We started out in the Man Cave- one of my rental properties,” Garman relates. “We kept doing more and more. We decided to make a business out of it. Both of our neighbors love us. We’ve taken our craft up about 10 notches and it keeps getting better.”

May 2 - May 16, 2012 FREETIME Starting small has its advantages. Garman and Bullinger both plan to keep their professional jobs, so they have the cash flow to pay the considerably lessened costs of the tiny brewing system and small space in the old Crossman Air Guns factory. Also missing are the pressures to compete with megamicros like Victor y Brewing or Dogfish Head. The vision is grassroots, like the first microbreweries. The Fairport Brewing Company will be a place where neighbors can stop in to pick up a growler, or maybe bottles of select brews, less so a place of intense marketing and distribution. “We’re going to be talking to bars, but again, very local.” Garman says. While Gar man agrees that he’d like the brewery to become something he and Bullinger could retire into and run full time, he’s content to keep things at a level at which there is still a great deal of ‘hobby’ involved, and the pressures of running and growing a business don’t throttle his passion for brewing. Fairpor t Brewing Company will launch with four core beers: Lift Bridge Lager, Perinton Porter, Brothers’ Belgian Tripel, and an as-yet unnamed black l a g e r. W h i l e Gar man and Bullinger plan distribution to bars and restaurants, their initial primary retail outlet will be the brewery itself. For now the big hurdles are t h e B yz a n t i n e hurdles inherent in obtaining a state brewing license, and the physical work of erecting their brewery, cooler and retail space. These challenges don’t seem to faze the two in the least, the guys behind the Fairport Brewing Company are more than content to put in the effort for their labor of love. SCREEN

THE AVENGERS

Written and directed by Joss Whedon Walt Disney Studios Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus Fans of Marvel Comics and the movies that have come from them are going to rejoice. First-timers who don’t know who Pepper Potts is or how Bruce Banner became Hulk or anything about the Shakespearian relationship between Thor and Loki will have no problem in being equally entertained.

The long-awaited coming together of all sorts of folks in the Marvel universe fires on all pistons. It’s an exciting, action-packed film that rarely slows down – except for a few well placed moments of quiet talk and storytelling to let us breathe. Among the super heroes who answer the call of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s head man Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) are brilliant industrialist Tony Stark (Iron Man), previously frozen WWII hero Steve Rogers (Captain America), brilliant scientist Bruce Banner (Hulk), Asgardian demi-god Thor, acrobatic fighter Natasha Romanoff, and ace archer Clint Bar ton (Hawkeye). Why is Fury assembling this crew, most of whom are meeting

for the first time? Oh, come on! It’s a freakin’ superhero movie!! They have to save the world!!! Well, at least they have to prevent a nasty fellow named Loki from taking it over, rendering the place “free from freedom” and, much like General Zod did over in the D.C. Comics universe, make all humans kneel before him because, in Loki’s words to a Manhattan street crowd, “You were made to be ruled.” There’s also some business about a glowing blue cube called the Tesseract, which has found its way to Earth and might just prove to be the key to unlimited stable energy. But watch out. It’s also acting as a portal to Asgard, a planet way over on the other end of space that’s the home of Loki and his brother Thor, as well as an army of some really mean and ugly and foul-tempered soldiers. We know from the opening frames that someone with a deep, obviously villainous voice is set to send those soldiers across the void. What’s that menacing phrase of his? Oh, right: “THE HUMANS WILL BURN!” In short order, out pops Loki (Tom Hiddleston), elegantly evil, armed with a magic scepter, decimating everything in his pa th, and loving it. For good measure , he also takes over the minds of two good guys – Bar ton (Jeremy Renner) and scientist Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) – for devious reasons. Our heroes aren’t all that thrilled about their orders to report. Banner is busy staying calm, to keep his inner Hulk from making an appearance. We’re told it’s been more than a year “without an incident.” Stark is tinkering with this and that groundbreaking invention, and letting everyone know how smart and handsome he is. Rogers is in the gym, working out, keeping up the physique. But, hell! He’ll go and fight the fight for his country! And so will the rest of them, once they realize what’s at stake. What we get out of this, courtesy of Joss Whedon, who’s become a sort of pop culture icon, himself, is a great mix of serious situations and a sometimes whacky sense of

CLIPS

By Ed Symkus & Tom Cannon

Opening May 4 The Avengers The action rarely stops in this excellent ensemble piece featuring superheroes from the Marvel universe getting together to, what else, save the world. The villain is Loki, brother of Thor, one of those heroes, making things more than a bit Shakespearian from the get-go. Also on hand are Iron Man, Hulk (now played by Mark Ruffalo), Captain America, and others. The film is as exciting as it is funny, and will no doubt make a pile of money, leading to the sequel blatantly alluded to during the end credits.

Opening May 11 Damsels in Distress Director Whit Stillman once made quirky and cool films including Barcelona and The Last Days of Disco. But he hasn’t made one since 1998. His return to the big screen is a disappointing one, telling the story of some college coed do-gooders who just want to make everyone as annoyingly chirpy as they are. One big problem is Greta Gerwig, who plays the group’s leader. She’s too old for the part, and, as she’s shown before, in Greenberg and the remake of Arthur, she’s pretty much a one-dimensional actor who we tire of rather quickly.

Undefeated Documentar y. High school football team with a really bad record. Passionate coach who pushes them to achieve the impossible. All kinds of personal and emotional troubles among the players. More words than action. We’ve seen this film before. Many times. No idea why it won, or was even nominated for, an Oscar.

Dark Shadows The 1966 TV soap opera was an immediate hit, of the cult variety. Vampires and Gothic creepy goings-on and just the right amount of camp. The campiness factor has been upped in Tim Burton’s big screen adaptation, starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, along with Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, and Jackie Earle Haley as the unfortunate Willie Loomis.

humor. Robert Downey Jr. gives even more snarkiness to Tony Stark than he has in past Iron Man films; Chris Hemsworth shows off some nicely placed comic timing with his Thor; Mark Ruffalo adds understated nuance in taking over the Hulk role; Scarlett Johansson dials back the intensity of her Natasha, and in doing so is easier to take than last time out. And we get the bonus of Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, dressed, for no good reason but fine effect, in a pair of Daisy Dukes. There are lots of hip in-jokes for fans of the previous movies

and characters, and just enough back stories about them to make everything understandable for the uninitiated. There’s also a great deal of people soaring through the air, sometimes of their own accord, other times because of how hard they’ve been punched. For those of you who just must know where to look for Mar vel honcho Stan Lee’s cameo, which has become a standard in these movies, he’s one of the fellows playing chess near the end. For anyone wondering if they should stay for some post-credits revelations, the answer is yes, indeed.
