Jackson Rohm

Johnny’s Irish Pub | June 14 With thousands of shows under his belt and over 15,000 albums sold, Jackson Rohm has moved from playing predominantly pop/rock to finding a suitable niche in country music as displayed on his release, Long Way From Moving On. Recorded in Nashville, the album garnered much critical praise. Rohm has been compared to John Mayer, Rob Thomas and Lifehouse. His latest is Blindsided.

Abilene Bar & Lounge | June 13 In support of a new album titled Bad Ingredients, Scott H. Biram comes to town. Her “blast-it-to-the-back-of-theroom” voice has made the 21 year old a force to be reckoned with.

Walt Wilkins & The Mystiqueros

Abilene Bar & Lounge | June 15 Austin’s Americana/country/ rock artist, Walt Wilkins, has earned a reputation as a songwriter and vocalist; with a voice described “as comfortable as a pair of old blue jeans.” With The Mystiqueros, Walt has created something of a Texas Hill Country super-group. •••••••••••••••••••••

I’m writing this during the opening match of the 2012 FIFA European championships, and there’s no better way to welcome the summer season than this awesome tournament. It’s also the time to consider what beers pair best with hot, sweltering weather. The thing is, this really isn’t about the season. Although many breweries capitalize on certain calendar dates to market a rotating assor tment of seasonal beers, the best and most quenching are available all year round. It’s in the summer, however, where they really come into their own. Ta k e V i c t o r y Prima Pils by Downingtown, PA’s Victory Brewing Company for example. A fearlessly brewed lager in the North German Pilsner style, Prima Pils is a case study in refreshment. Its super clean, lacking the heartier bready character of Czech pilsners, with an aromatic punch in the finish that makes you feel like you jammed your nose into a bunch of freshl y shredded hop flowers. All of this fades into a delectable honey quality. It’s a beer that could actually make you look forward to doing yardwork. Not to be outdone by their larger neighbor, Pottsville Pennsylvania’s Sly Fox Brewing Company Helles golden lager aims squarely at the palates of those who aren’t crazy about hop bitterness and enjoy a slightly chunky, sweet body with a clean finish. It’s a golden lager in the Munich style, a beer that takes some chutzpah to brew, as the clean character won’t disguise flaws caused by mistakes or ill-advised shortcuts in the brewing process. Helles is a tough style to nail, but Sly Fox

www.FREETIME.com •

comes damn close to the mark. Seattle, Washington’s Pyramid Brewing also has an answer to the question of what to drink under a summer sun. Pyramid Curveball Blonde ale pours straw gold, with a lively apricot and peach aroma. There’s no fruit in this beer whatsoever, but the yeast imparts a fragrant, fruity character that finishes light and clean, a mild beer that should appeal to a wide spectrum of palates. In a sense, this column is completely pointless. These days hundreds of American craft brews embody the light, refreshing character that make them perfect for a summer day, and it’s not the place of a regional beer writer to anoint any of them as “Best.â€? Still, I know what I’ll be enjoying this summer. This tournament may be all about Europe , but my beer choices are decidedly American. In other Beers: Custom Brewcrafters just got a whole lot bigger. Monday saw the installation of two new 60-barrel fermenters and a 60 barrel brite beer tank that increases the Honeyoe Falls brewer y’s fer mentation capacity by a whopping 75 percent . T h i s e x p a n s i o n i s necessar y because CB’s biggest customer, 3 Heads Brewing, is blowing up all over the northeast. At current capacity, Custom is struggling to supply 3 Heads’ demand in Chicago, Boston and now New York City. The expansion  should also mean a jump in Custom Brewcrafters’ ability to produce their own signature series beers, so don’t be surprised if they pump out a lot more top-quality craft brew on par with their Krysztoff, Borislav and MacBubba. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. For more on beer, check out the beercraft blog, updated regularly, at beercraft. wordpress.com. Find him on Twitter @beercraft. A TALK WITH KINKY FRIEDMAN By Ed Symkus Singer-songwriter-raconteur Kinky Friedman’s days in politics are likely over, even though they never really got off the ground. But fans of his music will be happy to know that he’s back out on the road, doing what he’s been best known for since the early 1970s. Here are a few facts about the man from Texas with the big hat and the ever-present cigar. Early bands included The Three Rejects and King Arthur and the Carrots. He found success and notoriety with his band The Texas Jewboys. His first album featured the songs Ride ‘em Jewboy and Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed. He was part of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue. He’s the prolific author of 18 novels about a private detective named Kinky Friedman, and a number of non-fiction books. He co-wrote the just-released autobiography The Billy Bob Papers with and about Billy Bob Thornton, and is working on a book with

Willie Nelson. He writes on an old electric Smith-Corona typewriter. In 2006, he ran for governor of Texas, but lost to Rick Perry. He owns Kinky Friedman Gourmet Coffee, Kinky Friedman Cigars, Kinky Friedman’s Private Stock Salsa, and Kinky Friedman’s Man in Black Tequila. He’s a founder of the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch. He has two friends named Ratso. And he’s playing a solo gig at the Water Street Music Hall on June 26. Reached by phone on a recent morning at his ranch in Texas, Friedman, 67, first said, “Let me dump Ratso from the other line,” then came back and said, “I’ve only just awakened. We could try to do this and see if I’m coherent, but I haven’t had a cup of coffee yet.” Called back 10 minutes later, he said, “I think I’m better,” then proceeded to chatter away about music and politics and tequila – which he referred to as “Texas mouthwash” – and a good many other subjects. “I was really a folkie, I guess,” he said of his days playing acoustic guitar in his high school band The Three Rejects. “And King Arthur and the Carrots was a surf band. But I turned myself on to Johnny Cash and Slim Whitman

June 13 - June 27, 2012 FREETIME and Jimmie Rodgers very early.” His love of country music led him to become a fan of Willie Nelson and Roger Miller and Shel Silverstein, who were writing the kinds of songs that touched him, that got him to, after a stint in the Peace Corps, move to Nashville, where he, too, was writing songs. He’ll be singing some of those old ones at Water Street, where he’ll accompany himself on his Guild guitar. “I’ll be doing The Ballad of Charles Whitman, which I have not been doing recently,” he said. Asked if his sad and prescient song, Sold American, about the state of our country when it was written almost 40 years ago, and is still apt today, will be on the set list, he said, “Of course.” But there won’t be any new songs. “I haven’t written a song in about 25 years,” he said. “Remember, there’s 31 books I’ve churned out ... I mean, cleverly crafted.” So does he miss sitting down and constructing songs on scraps of paper? His two-sentence answer was a bit vague.

“Writing itself is a painful process. But I think real songwriters have enjoyed having written.” He thought about that for a moment, then added, “Keep in mind that I haven’t written any great Barry Manilow hits, either. You know, those songs that make

you feel good for a short period of time. That’s what our country is all about – a Barry Manilow song. I think that might be the problem politically, too.” OK, he brought up politics, so it was fair game to ask about his failed gubernatorial campaign in Texas, one that, in all seriousness, was focused on the need for better education. As a musical performer, Friedman has always been totally relaxed onstage. So was he as relaxed on the political stage? “Well, I was for a while,” he said. “I think I’m kind of a natural for it. But then again, I feel sad for the people. I think the crowd always picks Bar rabas. They always say, ‘Free Barrabas, kill Jesus.’ They did it in my case, for sure. Once in a while a Winston Churchill slips through, but not often. What went wrong with me was that I ran as an independent. There hasn’t been an independent win in this country – except in a few small states. In the big states, the crips and the bloods (his terms for democrats and republicans) control it.” So with politics behind him, for now, Friedman has returned to hitting the road with his music – with a vengeance. His current Bi-Polar Tour consists of 25 shows in 26 days, and is a mix of songs and stories and readings from his latest non-fiction book, Heroes of a Texas Childhood. “Part of this tour is a page that I borrowed from Willie Nelson,” he said, “which is there’s no point in taking time off, now, or actually at any point, because when you take a night off, it kind of throws you off your feed. It’s tough in some ways, but in other ways, you get in the groove. It’s a kind of Townes Van Zandt-Woody Guthrie-Will Rogers-style tour. It’s a solo tour, with very few moving parts. And it works; it’s just you and the crowd. Oh, and I’ll be bringing some Texas mouthwash.” Kinky Friedman performs at the Water Street Music Hall on Tuesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. Call 585-325-5600.

Confession time. I worked in record shops from the late-1970s through the mid-1980s. The music of the day was playing over the store speakers from opening to closing. Believe me, I know my Foreigner and Journey and REO Speedwagon and Pat Benatar and Bon Jovi. I like some of it ‌ a lot. Some of it I find unlistenable, and did from the get-go.    More about my own tastes: I’m not a big fan of musicals –you know, those stage productions and movies where people will be talking normally, then burst into song, sometimes causing everyone around them to join in. Neither do I go out of my way to catch yet another b o y meets girl-boy loses girl-boy gets girl story.    So you might find it odd for me to confess that a week after seeing the film adaptation of the play Rock of Ages — a boy meets girl story in which someone on a bus from Oklahoma to L.A. bursts into song, as do the other passengers, and the driver, in the first two

minutes – whenever I think about it, my right foot starts tapping to the beat of “Juke Box Hero,â€? and a smile spreads across my face    Despite plenty of dramatic clichĂŠs and a been there done that feeling, this is a movie that, through sheer exuberance, funny scenarios, and all kinds of surprises from its cast, grabs you and never stops providing you with a good time.    It’s about two young dreamers in 1987 L.A. NaĂŻve, doe-eyed, jobless Sherrie (Julianne Hough) wants to be a singer. Hopeful, hard-working bar back Drew (Diego Boneta)  wants to be up on the stage of the Bourbon Room (I guess they couldn’t use the name Whisky a Go-Go) with a guitar slung around his waist.    The film keeps those two at its center, and centers the action on the Sunset Strip, but there’s plenty of storytelling swirling around them with all of that guitar-driven music. There’s Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise), a narcissistic but long-

in-the-tooth rock star who still makes women faint but isn’t quite the big name he once was. There’s the nearly broke club owner (Alec Baldwin, with a long gray wig) and his right hand man (Russell

Brand), hoping a Stacee Jaxx gig will keep them from financial ruin. In place of the play’s real estate developer villains, there’s now the mayor’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones), conspicuously made up to look like former presidential candidate Michelle Bachman, thumping her bible and leading conser vative groups in protest against the “filth” of rock ’n’ roll. Everyone sings in the film. Hough and Boneta already have credentials on their own albums. She does country down in Nashville. He’s a pop star in his native Mexico. The biggest surprise is Cruise, who not only delivers another in a string of recent solid performance (check out Tropic Thunder and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), he also reveals that he’s got some long-hidden vocal chops. Seriously, wait till you hear him belt out Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive.” Even former pro wrestler Kevin Nash, as one of the Jaxx bodyguards, gets to sing one word. I think the only one without a vocal is the monkey, but that’s a whole other story. The performances of the songs aren’t better than or even necessarily as good as the originals. That wasn’t the point here. It was to celebrate the songs, not top them – and to fit them in and around the dialogue to take the shape of a story. While relative newcomers (to acting) Hough and Boneta come across as kind of vanilla, and they don’t display the electricity needed to make their budding relationship believable, Baldwin and Brand make up for it by stopping just short of finishing each other’s lines. They are hilarious together. Cruise, putting everything he’s got into the part, including a lot of very effective whispering, gets one of the best introductory scenes ever, in a bedroom, emerging from under a pile of scantily clad female worshippers. Let’s hear it for rock ’n’ roll hedonism! The question, of course, is whether people will go to see an oddball film like this. Rock musicals, from Across the Universe to Phantom of the Paradise and the truly weird and wonderfully awful The Apple, haven’t fared very well at the box office. And at the start of Rock of Ages, the audience I was with did start laughing, a little derisively. But then they began to enjoy it, getting caught up in its delirious energy. So will this bring film musicals back to popularity? Not likely, but it sure is a pleasant, rockin’ diversion.

Opening June 15 Hysteria In the late 19th century, accordHysteria ing to this supposedly basedon-fact story, a couple of doctors (Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Dancy) who treated the “women’s condition” then referred to as hysteria, along with a tinkerer friend (Rupert Everett), accidentally invent a machine that will eventually be known as a vibrator. The new tool becomes a miraculous cure for that “condition.” Funny and slightly squeamish, with Maggie Gyllenhaal as a liberated woman. Rock of Ages Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl, all done to the sound

and even though there are some very funny moments, the film just becomes uncomfortable to watch. But I’ll bet it makes money.

of new takes on classic ’80s hard rock and power ballads (from Foreigner to Pat Benatar). The Broadway play goes through some changes, nicely adapting to the big screen, with relative newcomers Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta as dreamers of stardom trying to make it musically in 1987 L.A. Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, and Tom Cruise (who proves to be a hell of a singer) give it their all. Who cares about the story clichés – this is all kinds of fun. That’s My Boy Adam Sandler plays a rundown, wayward guy living in the past glories of a tabloid childhood, when he got his junior high teacher pregnant. Now his successful adult son (Andy Samberg) wants nothing to do with him, though dad wants to reconnect. Lots of foul language and juvenile grossout behavior leaves a bad taste,

Brave The newest from Pixar is another winner, this one about a young princess who wants to be free, rather than having to adhere to the traditions of the Scottish kingdom ruled by her loving but goofy dad and loving but strong-willed mom. The mother-daughter relationship gets strained, someone isn’t careful about what she wishes for, a pathos-filled, but also hilarious and action-packed, story ensues.
