At Odds With The Simple Ways by Mark Tichenor It was our last night in Europe and, coming off a two-week odyssey through the most unique beer cities in Germany, we were a bit run down. Still, the daily drudgery loomed, literally, over the horizon and the twisty streets of Amsterdam still beckoned. Thus, my brewer friend Bruce and I found ourselves at an intersection of canal and cobblestone, looking dubiously at Cafe De Spuyt, and its sign claiming to offer “100 Beeren.” To say the place was a magical wonderland would be a stretch, but it was cozy, age-worn and empty, save for the friendly proprietor. And this guy understood beer. His bookshelf contained works by Michael Jackson, Pete Brown, Garrett Oliver, Martyn Cornell, you name it. And he talked the talk as well. We had a lively, informed discussion about the American craft scene that really showed me how seriously Europeans are taking it. Oh, and there were 100 beeren, colorfully labeled, from across The Netherlands and around the world. The one that caught my eye, however, was the one with no fancy label, indeed no label at all. It was a plain brown bottle, with a simple cap, that came from the next country over. It actually took a minute to sink in. I was looking at the Holy Grail. The plac id f ields around Poperinge, Belgium, belie the turmoil this land and its inhabitants endured 95 years ago. Back then, they were stump-riddled mud pits, blasted uneven by artillery and scarred by trenches slashed through to the Ypres battlefield. They certainly still dig up the odd explosive shell, but the earth here is level again. Farmers tend their crops. The villages are small and sleepy. The place is peaceful enough to have an abbey, where monks of the Trappist order pray and live a life of quiet faithful deprivation. They support themselves with what goods they can produce. The monks bake bread, which I hear is delicious, but they’re best known for the beer they brew. The abbey is called St. Sixtus, and it’s in the town of Vleteren.

•••••••••••••••••••••

February 8 - February 22, 2012 FREETIME

The monks of St. Sixtus are a bit more hardcore than those of the other Trappist abbeys, who’d long been profiting from the enormous regard in which beer lovers held their ale. Distribution chains are in place for Joe Hophead to wander into beer stores all over the USA and walk out with a bottle of Orval or Rochefort. But the monks in Vleteren never got comfortable with mass worldwide distribution and an income stream that could potentially bring them into moral conflict with their code of a simple life and support of a modest abbey. They prefer to keep it close to home. If you want their beer, Westvleteren, you go to them. They brew a light-alcohol Blonde, the Westvleteren 8, and, more rarely, the strong Westvleteren 12, considered one of the finest beers in the world by pretty much all beer lovers, many of whom had yet to try it. To buy it legitimately, you have to win something of a telephone lottery, then drive to the brewery and pick up your two cases maximum. We found an easier method was to blindly stumble into a randomly selected beer bar in Amsterdam. Does the Westvleteren 12 live up to its hype? In many ways, yes. It’s a deep, syrupy brew rife with plum and raisin character, carrying just enough of that Belgian funk to let you know what you’re drinking is special. However, it isn’t so many light years ahead of other excellent Trappist quads, such as Rochefort 10, that it justifies the trek to Flanders’ fields. It’s the scarcity that makes Westy 12 such a treasured brew, but it’s no fault of the abbey that the rest of the world is beer crazy. The monk/brewers are not playing a marketing game of hard-to-get, they’re brewing from a simple ideal, with a simple purpose, and remain perfectly happy to follow a simple business model that seems tragically missing from today’s commerce ethos: They brew enough Westvleteren to support the abbey, and there are enough local people to make this possible. That is all they need. I wonder if that would still work over here? Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. For more on beer, check out the beercraft blog, updated regularly, at beercraftsite. com. The Prickers By Angela Cannon-Crothers There’s a certain roiling fervor and infectious foot stomping that occurs at a Prickers show. What began as a way to “just make a lot of racket” for their friends in the rural hills around Naples NY has been catching on to pant legs around the

Electric bass guitarist, mandolin, and kazooist, Nick Fargnoli, adds “We like nontraditional vocal styling so we explore the punk roots of Old Time.” Other instrumentals in the core band include the sexy and melodious trumpet playing and vocals of Carrie Blackwood Kennedy, Mike Fargnoli on drums, and Carl Neubauer who masterly rotates between guitar, cello banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and vocals. Pricker performances often take on the eclectic mixes of musician friends like Aaron Pridmore on keyboards, Aaron Lipp (from Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad), Bill Henrie of The Henrie Brothers, and a host of talented others. GARY LEWIS By Scott Gudell Amazingly talented artists recorded and performed during the mid-1960’s, and they dominated the top of the music charts. They were popular then and are still relevant today. The list is a who’s who in the world of music: the Rolling Stones, the Temptations, the Beach Boys, the Four Tops, the Byrds, the Beatles and countless others. Another member of that elite group is Gary Lewis and the Playboys, a band that turned out hits such as “Count Me In,” “Everybody Loves a Clown,” “This Diamond Ring” and others. Gary Lewis, with a new, Nashville based Playboys, will be performing on Feb. 11, 2012 to benefit the new Mendon Public Librar y. Gar y Lewis is passionate about the library for a number of reasons but partially due to the fact that he’s lived in the area for a number of years. We had a chance to talk about the world of music then, now and beyond. That point in time in the 1960’s was a “seam” or a transition period when musicians were evolving from performing works written by others to writing and recording their own work. It wasn’t uncommon for a song to be recorded by several top artists and then the songs battled it out for success. As with other groups, many of the songs Gary Lewis performed were “covers.” “You could do that on singles... come up with your creative best stuff.. but when it came time to put out the album with the hit single on it you would only put your hit single on it and everybody else’s hit singles at the time,” Lewis clarified. “They had the idea of ‘why waste an album full of (your) hits’...so we also did everybody else’s stuff. “A lot of the songs were submitted to the record company and every couple of months I would go into (producer) Snuffy Garrett’s office and we would listen to all these different demos. He picked the songs that we would record and then he also picked what songs we would put on the album. He knew what songs to record,” Lewis says. Choosing what must be considered the group’s biggest hit was a bit of luck and a bit of good timing. “After one of several long days of listening to various demos,

February 8 - February 22, 2012 FREETIME Snuffy said. ‘Well, I’m going to pull this one out. I’ve been saving this one for a while. I offered this one to Bobby Vee and he didn’t like it so he wouldn’t do it.’ He put it on and it was a demo of “This Diamond Ring.” So, naturally, every time I see Bobby Vee, I say ‘thanks man.’ ” The song eventually became the signature song for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Lewis states that while the original group played on every single track, they also had stellar session players help f lesh out songs, including Leon Russell. “He was great. He arranged everything we did and played a number of solos...a guitar solo on “She’s Just My Style,” a bass trumpet on “Everybody Loves A Clown.” He played everything. I was just going to write a song, a little novelty song, and give it to my dad (co-

median Jerry Lewis). So me and Snuffy and Leon are writing this song and, as it started to evolve, it started sounding better and better and we go ‘oh, wow, this is cool.’ And I said, ‘You know, I think we should put this out.’ Snuffy said ‘I thought you were going to give this to your dad?’ and I said, ‘Well, I can give him a real nice card!” Lewis told a similar story about “Count Me In.” It was the classic situation in which the group recorded all day and all night and they were dead tired but, finally, they did one final song. “We did it and it really was great,” Lewis says. Another success...it went on to be a chart topping single. As the songs climbed the charts, the group hit the road performing concerts as well as appearing on the top TV shows of the 1960’s such as Shindig and Hullabaloo. But a major transition period for Gary Lewis and the

Playboys was when he eventually entered the service and went to Viet Nam. “I got drafted in December of ’66, and by the second year I got orders to go to Viet Nam.” Later, Lewis was sent to Korea As a veteran, he has a passion for supporting vets. “We do shows for the veterans, we go to the veterans hospitals so I can thank everybody for their service,” he says. But a return to the way things were before Nam wasn’t in the cards. “I came out of the service and all of a sudden there were these people: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Doors...my kind of music was gone, it was just gone. My dad’s musician friends used to tell me, ‘never sing or play out of your style...or it won’t work,’ So about ’72 I just stopped completely and bought a music store in California. I did that until ’84 when this agent from Indiana called and said ‘Hey man, the 60’s are coming back,’ and I said ‘Yeah, right.’ But he said, ‘No, really, I can get you 60 to 100 dates a year!’ And I said ‘If you can get em,’ I’ll play em.’ And, sure enough, that’s what’s been happening since ’84.” Flash forward to 2012. Gary Lewis has just recorded “You Can’t Go Back,” and the single has more earthiness and grit to it than the highly polished songs from decades ago. But not too much. Still plenty of the “old” Gary Lewis but with a nod to today. “What I was striving for was to keep it where it’s recognizable because people tell me that when they hear my voice, they know who it is.” The goal was to make sure these and other recordings could faithfully be presented live and in concert. The musicians and music industry people he met in Nashville and Louisville may influence the near future. He’s passionate about continuing to support veterans as well. “I’m a vet and I know how they feel. And, I just want to keep playing.” Gary Lewis and the Playboys (with opening act Steve Grills) will perform February 11 at Mendon Country Club in a special benefit for the Mendon Public Library.
