Water St. Music Hall | June 27 Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers perform a mix of country/rock/Americana. Their impressive stage show has been described by Paste Magazine - “guitars blaze, quake and quiver, drums slip, thud and thunder with killer melodies and hooks.” Band members include Roger on lead vocals, Jim Dalton on guitar, Nick Scropos on bass and Paul “P.H.” Naffah on drums. Their latest is Unida Cantina.

Finger Lakes Casino & Racetrack | June 27 A self-titled debut album, released in 1977, introduced Eddie Money to a broad-ranging audience of listeners who were ready to grab “Two Tickets to Paradise.” Achieving double platinum status with his debut, Money went on to maintain his musical standing with a series of hit singles including “Baby Hold On,” “No Control,” “Gimme Some Water,” and “Take Me Home Tonight.” Money, an accomplished musician (and former police officer) who writes, plays sax, harmonica and piano, has recorded over a dozen albums of his own including Wanna Go Back.

Canadian rockers Barenaked Ladies join forces with Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd and The Monsters, and Cracker, bringing their “Last Summer On Earth” show to CMAC, July 7. of Animals Fighting, High and Driving, Jeer at Rome and Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer…The Dear Hunter joins this tour in support of their latest, The Color Spectrum. The indie rock group hails from Providence RI and is led by Casey Crescenzo. A new one, titled Act IV, is due out next year.

Site | June 28 The Led Zeppelin tribute band, Get the Led Out, is ready to “Party in the Park!” Hailing from Philadelphia, the band has been called “America’s Led Zeppelin” by critics and fans alike. Members include Paul Sinclair on lead vocals along with Paul Hammond, Billy Childs, Adam Fer raioli, Andrew Lipke, Jimmy Marchiano and Diana DeSantis.

His next work, Frontier, included members of his House of Fire band; and The Original Love soon followed. He’s also recorded an EP, “Goldyhyms.”

Site | July 5 Melding jazz, funk, and rock, Tower of Power has been performing since the 1970s, touring with the likes of Sly Stone and Credence Clearwater Revival before headlining their own shows. They’ve recorded with artists such as Elton John, Smokey Robinson, Rod Stewart, and Dionne Warwick. Founding member and saxophonist Emilio Castillio calls the Tower of Power sound “urban soul music” while lead singer Brent Carter calls it “old school funk with new school flavor” – and everyone calls their up-front brass section amazing to hear in live concerts.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

By Ed Symkus What’s all the rumpus about it being too soon for a Spider-Man reboot? Especially when every single word of complaint is coming from people who haven’t seen a frame of the new movie. Here’s my take on it, and I’ve seen the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire trilogy as well as the new, improved – yes, improved – film. Sam Raimi is a terrific director, who infused those three films, with humor, angst, wild energy, and a neat comic book sensibility. Maguire gave the role his all, but his all in that case, consisted of variations on a wide-eyed, awestruck look, accompanied by bouts of uncertainty. Maguire got to open up more and show a darker side to the character in the third installment, but by then the series was beginning to show some tiredness. Both Raimi and Maguire were initially game for a fourth entry, but wisely stepped down. Which led the folks at Marvel and Columbia to step up, to take a chance at starting the franchise all over, from scratch. To reboot. The biggest chance was going for an as-yet unproven director. Marc Webb cut his teeth on music videos and various TV series, but his only feature had been the well directed

I doubt that the decision of who to play the next generation Spidey kept many studio execs up at night. All they had to do was look at the range the L.A.-born, British-raised Andrew Garfield had already displayed on film. You, too, might want to compare and contrast his work in Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974, Never Let Me Go, and The Social Network. Marc Webb has now proven that he can mix crazy action with words and emotions, resulting in a more realistic feel to this Spider-Man entry. Andrew Garfield has shown that web-swinging through New York doesn’t get in the way of him delivering a thoughtful performance that combines exuberance with inner turmoil, at a level of believability that Maguire just wasn’t able to reach. And, lest I forget, even though there’s a tad too much time spent here in developing the back story of Peter Parker’s childhood – his parents vanishing, life with his kindly aunt and uncle, being both shy and bullied in high school, a certain radioactive spider bite – this is a film that eventually turns to kick-ass mode, then sticks with it. There’s an insightful parent-kidrelationship element, though it’s really between an aunt and uncle and the kid (Martin Sheen shines as Uncle Ben, Sally Field gives us some attitude as Aunt May). The longgestating love interest angle between Peter Parker (Garfield), and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) is the film’s only weak link, as it seems that Stone is following Tobey Maguire’s wide-eyed approach to her character. And then there’s the villain, a classic one who is right in line with the Marvel tradition of giving an edge of sympathy to him. Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), before turning into the truly frightening Lizard (physically reminiscent of the Ray Harryhausen creatures of the late-1950s), is a scientist concerned with helping mankind. Then things go very wrong. Life and death battles ensue – on the ground, underwater, up in the sky. Emotions get to run a little rampant when Peter realizes that Gwen’s dad is Captain Stacy (Denis Leary), the stubborn cop who wants the “vigilante� Spider-Man brought down. Those familiar with Spidey lore know that a huge chunk of the story concerns Peter-Spidey’s mission of revenge over the death of a loved one. And fans of Marvel honcho Stan Lee’s requisite cameo will find him in a library scene. So, is it too soon for a reboot of a popular and very successful movie series? Hell, no. They did it right. I’m already waiting for the 2014 sequel.

The FREETIME Magazine Baseball Buddies will honor local youth baseball teams at all 72 Rochester Red Wings and 37 Empire State Yankees home games during the 2012 season. Members of each selected team will be introduced along with their coaches. The youngsters will be invited to stand on the field next to the Red Wings for the playing of the National Anthem.

All the individuals of the selected team will receive a Baseball Cap compliments of FREETIME Magazine and the Red Wings. Ten tickets will be provided for the team. Additional tickets may be purchased at a group discount. Teams may also register by signing up at all Red Wings home games during the 2012 season. Teams will be contacted by a Red Wings representative to schedule their special night.

Glenville Colin Cannon

By Scott Gudell Three years after his debut release, jazz/fusion guitarist Colin Cannon is back with Glenville. As with 2009’s release In Summary, Glenville is, as Cannon said, “a loose concept album like In Summary was.” While the first album moved from chords to riffs to repeats and improv, it was, in many ways, a musical diary. Glenville picks up where the last disc left off. Still accompanied by Manami Morita on piano (plus vibes), Zak Croxall on bass and Tom Hartman on drums (replaced by Devin Collins on a pair of tracks), there is continuity as well as evolution as the songs flow together seamlessly like a suite. Where the first disc focused on several years when Cannon and company were based in Boston, Glenville starts in Boston as early tracks on the CD are relatively quiet and introspective, and then the music migrates south to the hustle and bustle concrete streets of New York City. Cannon has also moved from an album containing all originals to one that cherry picks an inviting cover of the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence,” plus a collective group composition called “Savant Bar.” “Dear Prudence” starts off warm and tender and slowly introduces more and more improv, that becomes increasingly aggressive. While the album opens with the ethereal softness found on much of the first disc, the final few tracks this time around stay upbeat and kinetic. Although Cannon himself is rightfully described as a jazz guitarist, he continues to echo the sounds of progressive rock guitarists such as Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and Steve Hackett (Genesis). Colin Cannon’s sound and style are top notch and it will be interesting to see how the next release, the next piece of the puzzle, fits. Will it be a deeper evolution into the future or, as with so many Part IIIs, will it reach back to the early roots and invite back early Cannon mentors as guests, such as Rochester’s Bob Sneider and Steve Greene?? Stay tuned… Rush and Eric Clapton; and won “Most Outstanding Horns” four years straight in Living Blues magazine.
