LINKING ABU DHABI WITH INDUSTRIAL CENTRES

It will facilitate the distribution of goods across the coun tries of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and UAE, where it will connect quarries in the northern emirates to industri al centres in the Musaffah area, in addition to connecting Ruwais, Khalifa Port and the container companies in Dubai within Jebel Ali Port. The containers will be hauled by rail to and from other freight facilities following a road journey to the end-user location.

Upon the completion of Stage Two of the UAE National Rail Network, Etihad Rail will provide logistics solutions from the railway terminal, which is located at the heart of the In dustrial City of Abu Dhabi, a burgeoning hub of industrial companies in the area.

Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of Rail Re lations Sector at Etihad Rail, said: “Connecting the railway freight terminal at ICAD with Etihad Rail’s main line ensures our readiness to start providing our clients with logistics solutions by linking Abu Dhabi with various industrial cen tres and import and export points. This milestone brings us closer to achieving our goal of providing an integrated trans port system that connects the industrial and manufacturing centres with freight terminals and ports across the emirates. The strategic location of the ICAD railway freight terminal will also drive value for all our customers as it is the largest indoor railway freight terminal in the UAE.”

their maintenance costs. It will drive the sustainable devel opment that we are witnessing across the UAE, by enabling a positive socioeconomic impact on industry, commerce, the environment, and more,” he added.

This achievement comes in line with the goals of the UAE Railway Programme, which is the largest integrated system for transporting goods and passengers across the country. The programme aims to connect the country’s key centres of industry and production, open new trade routes and facil itate population movement.

tihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE National Rail network, has announced the successful completion of the connection between the railway freight terminal at the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD), which is the largest inland freight railway terminal in the country, and the UAE National Rail Network. The Com pany completed tracklaying works and conducting success ful tests on the new line, which extends from the borders of Saudi Arabia to the port of Fujairah, on the eastern coast, passing through key manufacturing hubs and urban centres.

Etihad Rail is constructing the largest inland railway freight terminal in the UAE in ICAD. Spanning just over 2.7 million sq ft, the new railway freight terminal at will comprise over 22 buildings and major structures to support operations, pro cessing up to nine trains each day.

“We are proud of this achievement, which supports our efforts to encourage companies to restructure their logistical operations and opt for rail logistics solutions, thereby cutting costs, increasing efficiency, and providing safer transporta tion of goods. This is exemplified by the trade agreements that we have made with some of the biggest companies in the UAE, such as Stevin Rock LLC, Western Bainoona Group, and Al Ghurair Iron & Steel LLC.

Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the new railway freight terminal will offer a range of competitive ad vantages for businesses, at the highest levels of efficiency in terms of transport costs and sustainability.

The railway freight terminal will act as a logistics hub for heavy industries enabling distribution of raw materials and machinery, in addition to facilitating better connections to infrastructure, such as ports. It will also offer customs ser vices, which will make ICAD tenants more competitive.

"Additionally, customers in certain markets, including bulk unit trains, intermodal, and automotive, will see a curtailment of service up to 72 hours before the end of the cooling-off pe riod to prepare for a safe and orderly stoppage should there be a strike. An embargo with specific information for inter modal and automotive customers is scheduled to be issued. We will communicate with all affected customers quickly and transparently about their shipments.

"This does not mean a work stoppage is certain. We want a resolution that allows us to continue serving customers and prevents disruption to an already fragile US supply chain. We have asked the holdout unions to come to the table and final ise an agreement based on the recommendations of the PEB.

"ThesePEB.recommendations represent a fair and generous outcome for labour and would avoid a shutdown of rail ser vice."

"We have communicated to our customers that we will temporarily halt certain types of shipments beginning Sep tember 12. In addition, to safely ramp down our network and enable us to bring service back quickly, certain other custom ers will see a preliminary curtailment of service before Sep tember 16," said the statement.

Ed Elkins, NS EVP & Chief Marketing Officer moved to reas sure customers. In a letter to shippers he wrote: "Unfortu nately, because we have not yet reached agreement with all remaining unions, there is the potential for a strike as early as 12:01 am on September 16, when the final scheduled cool ing-off period expires. We asked the two holdout unions for a commitment not to strike so we could continue normal oper ations, but they have declined.

"As a result, we must take steps to ensure we can shut down operations safely if a strike occurs and be positioned to restart quickly when operations resume. Most importantly, we must ensure that no hazardous material or freight that requires special security is left on an unattended train out on the network in the event of a sudden strike. To prevent this, we must begin issuing embargoes for certain types of shipments beginning today, which includes rail security-sen sitive material (RSSM) and certain time-sensitive shipments outlined in the embargo.

"Should the two remaining unions commit not to strike, we will resume full operations. We have communicated to all parties in the negotiations that we will not lock out union employees. Our goal is to keep our nation’s economy moving, serve our customers and reach agreements with the remain ing unions."

"If the position of the unions changes and the threat of a strike is retracted, we will seek to resume normal operations as quickly as practical. AJ recently received his 362nd US patent, surpassing George Westinghouse’s total. His contributions to the company and the rail in dustry have earned him the nickname “Father of the AC Locomotive.”

headline newsheadline news

Hey, that’s like choosing a favourite child. But seriously, two patents come to mind. One of them has to do with running two drives to control one mining traction motor (dual IGBT drive), thereby facilitating higher tonnage trucks. This innovation kept us ahead of our competition and proved the mainstay of our mining business for many years. To provide just a little more detail, it made existing locomotive/ mining parts work in conjunction with complex timing controls (measured in nanoseconds) – a great challenge for me and lots of fun at the same time.

For AJ, the art of innovation has never been about his personal patent count but rather the impact his inventions have made. In this regard, his work speaks for itself. Whether it is making AC propulsion systems the standard for the rail

industry; creating software that pro vided “cruise control for trains”; or invent ing battery systems for a new era of bat tery-powered locomotives; AJ’s dedica tion to “what’s next” has literally changed the trajectory of how 45-yearfromsightsperform.locomotivesHeshareshisinandadviceacelebratedcareer.

has transformed the rail indus try for more than 150 years. It started with the company’s founder George Westinghouse, who was one of the world’s foremost innovators with 361 US patents to his name.Wabtec continues innovating today with the next generation of makers, dreamers, doers, and trailblazers. One of those employees par ticularly embodies Westinghouse’s spirit of in novation. His name is AJ Kumar.

Q: Do you remember your first pat ent?

Q: Out of all the patents you have received, which is your personal favorite?

First, look at all the new technology around you and imagine a fresh way you can apply it to improve the lives of your customers, or start with any problem that resonates with custom ers.If you don’t have direct access to customers and what they are saying, listen attentively at meetings and closely monitor industry publica tions and news.

Q: Which of your patents have made, or will make, the most significant impact on the railroad industry?

I never dreamed of railroads or played ob sessively with train sets. I mentioned luck earli er, and I meant it. Getting involved in this beau tiful business was just a random event. In the 1970s, I applied to GE (not transportation) for a position, and GE Transportation replied. The rest, one might say, is history.

Failurecoming.can be productive and give life to new, successful ideas.

I’ll be honest, there’s no grand “process” per se, but I can share some insights common to successful patents.

www.freight-tracks.com SEPTEMBER 12 2022 n 7

I worked on a flywheel bus that did nothing commercially, but a colleague leveraged that concept to invent the Dash 8 locomotive crank ing system. Another example: hybrid locomo tive applications ideas (which went nowhere in the early 2000s) ultimately led to the commer cially successful Trip Optimizer.

headline newsheadline news

Q: Maybe we should have asked you this first, but what attracted you to railroads? Did you have a train set as a kid?

Q: Most people have had good ideas in their lifetime, you have turned good and great ideas into hundreds of patented products/processes. What's the difference?

Luck, for sure. But let me offer a more objec tive response. Once you identify a potentially significant solution, don’t give up on it – keep trying! My C4 solution came after eight years of presenting it to many different managers in many different ways. Persistence matters. Also, work the different avenues available to you: get your solution into the STRAP process, work through the chief engineer’s office, or bring it to your product manger’s attention.

I suspect the series of patents connected to the AC individual axle control and Trip Optimiz er have made the most impact. The first series boosted the tractive effort of AC locomotives, enabling railroads to dispatch higher tonnage trains with the same number of locomotives, thereby increasing productivity. The second series delivered significant fuel savings and en hanced the consistency of each trip.

Many of my ideas never became patents, and some that did never prove commercially successful. Inventors never know which ideas will make the biggest impact, so we must keep them

My other favourite was a dynamic weight management system for our C4 locomotives. It took the very simple idea of using mostly familiar parts to make a 4-axle AC locomotive perform just as well as a 6-axle DC locomotive –and with higher reliability! The simplicity of the idea, its elegance, elevates it to my “favourite” status. I also remember a CEO saying that this innovation delivered one of the highest returns on investment in history, if not the highest.

Q: What is the process for successfully securing a patent?

Q: Is failure an important part of innovation? What have you learned from your mistakes?

good thinking

Once you identify a worthy problem and solution for it – whether individually or in col laboration with others – that will make a rea sonable impact, the patent process is relatively simple and pain free.

Applying the Pareto Principle to rail freight shipments

Once gathered at the elevator or at some point prior to receiving all the grain committed to the grain company’ customer, the grain company will either order railroad sup plied railcars or use their private leased railcars or privately owned railcars to ship the DNS to the customer. The cus tomer could be a processing company turning the wheat into flour or an international market with demand for DNS or an animal feed operation looking to provide food for their animals.

Pareto Measures? The time it takes to incent move ment from the field to elevator to gather sufficient quan tities of DNS to meet shipping requirements. Where does

12 n SEPTEMBER 12 2022 @freighttracks

According to Investopia: “The Pareto Principle, named after economist Vilfredo Pareto, specifies that 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes, asserting an unequal relationship between inputs and outputs. This principle serves as a general reminder that the relationship between inputs and outputs is not balanced. The Pareto Principle is also known as the Pareto Rule or the 80/20 Rule.”

When measured successfully, you will be able to apply the Pareto Principle to increase your success shipping via rail. To apply the 80/20 rule, you must first have some method of measurement for which to quantify your assumptions. Since we need to verify our assumptions, we take our measurements and put the cause and effect(s) into sepa rate buckets showing those that related to each other and those that are not related. After we document and classify these assumptions, they then become facts. And facts are something we can work with!

What does this have to do with rail?

Pareto and freight transportation

Gathering of the DNS comes from the farmer, after har vest, to the elevator via truck. Price is the catalyst that in cents grain to move to the elevator. A grain company must identify quality and quantities required for their customers who use the DNS to make bread. the DNS come from and what geographic area supports faster order fulfillment and which is slower.

In the bulk and intermodal freight transportation systems today, there are a lot of data points to measure. Take first of all the entire logistics cycle. This is really best expressed through an example. We’ll use Dark Northern Spring Wheat (DNS) commonly grown in North Dakota and highly sought after for its gluten content generally indicative of its protein content. DNS is a bread makers staple. If you anal yse the logistics path for DNS to its final processing or feed destination, you’ll find these facts at a high level:

Pareto Measure? Reliability measure of the time be tween ordering railroad supplied railcars and the time the railcars are spotted for loading. Reliability of having leased or owned railcars for the same measurement. Which is more reliable? Which meets any cleanliness require ments? What provides better mechanical ease of opera tions (loading)?

Upon shipment of the DNS to a customer the next set of measures are the transit time measures. The time from the loading location at the release of the loads to the placement of those loads at the customer are the mea sures you’re looking for.

What you’re looking for are specific rail yards that hold the loaded railcars for excessive amounts of time, bad or der statuses that may not represent an actual bad order (often time bad order times aren’t counted against rail road performance measures), bad order statuses that are real, etc. Identify the consistent bad order status and put a plan against it.

The details must be supported by hard data to be benefi cial. There can be no guessing, no “I think” analysis. Let the numbers tell you where the issue(s) are.

Pareto Measure? In detail, measure the times from the release to pull or pickup time of your railcar(s); pickup to spot of the loaded railcar at your customer and from spot to release of the railcar from your customer.

The list goes on.

You can summarise the data in groups. For instance, six railcars shipped on Tuesday spent 24 hours in our yard prior to release, travelled well until X yard where they set from time 1 to time 2 a total of Y hours and then were delivered to the shippers’ customer who had the cars Z hours. Accumulate data for each shipment and you’ll start to see patterns that allow you to quantify pain points and give you some ammunition to take to the railroads for in sights on how to provide better overall service.

The Outcome

The granularity of measurements here depends on what the initial data tells you. If the pickup to spot of a railcars time is high, dive into more detail.

In consideration of the above, what is the time from spotted for delivery and the release as loads for each loading location and railcar supplier (railroad supplied or

Monarchs appear to use a combination of air currents, the magnetic pull of the earth and the position of the sun, among other guides, to find their way south to Michoacán, Mexico for the winter and to the United States and Canada for the summer. Monarchs only travel during the day and need to find a roost at night, where they gather at waystations to rest, refuel, breed, and lay eggs along the way. Many of these locations are used year after year.

"Freight transport needs alternatives on the left bank of the Rhine –we have to act now!"

Capacity bottleneck Rhine valley railway endangers modal shift and supply

The current capacity bottlenecks, on the other hand, are noticeably worsen ing and represent a worrying constant. Construction sites, technical disruptions and insufficient diversion routes are putting such a strain on operations that regular freight transport operations are hardly possible any more, as it was also recently highlighted at the event "Five years after the Rastatt accident: still nothing learned?" (NEE, link). This has serious consequences on supply and modal shift. Already today, shippers are showing a tendency to shift back to the road, especially for time-sensitive goods. The Swiss railway industry is there fore calling for targeted measures to safeguard capacity and stabilise opera tions. The main focus is on the railway line on the left bank of the Rhine, via France. Thanks to the flat route and good presuppositions with regard to its profile, it is an ideal complement and alternative to the Rhine Valley railway, on the right bank, via Germany. During the closure of Rastatt in 2017, it had already become clear that the Alsatian line could be used for the P400 profile thanks to the rapid coding of the North ern section Lauterbourg-Strasbourg and the technical inspection of the South ern section Strasbourg-Basel. Also the upgrade of the line “Gäubahn” between Stuttgart and Singen contributes to traf fic decongestion.

Rail freight traffic shall be op erated without interruption on the main international routes. Therefore, prior to line closures, infrastructure managers must ensure that there are no open construc tion sites, that the facilities are problem-free and that the necessary equipment (overhead line, train length, storage areas, etc.) is avail able for all trains using the al ternative routes. It is in Swit zerland's interest that the general renewal of congested rail corridors, as announced in Germany, includes effec tive bypass concepts from the very beginning. Before completely renewing the bypass routes, they must be adapted to operational and infrastructure requirements.

The completion of the Rhine Valley railway between Karlsruhe and Basel is not expected before 2040-2045. Workable alternative solutions shall be implemented by then.

Measure no. 2 – Facilitate access to diversion routes via France

The modernisation of the north-south axis on the left bank of the Rhine is current ly one of the most important prerequisites for the stable use of the NRLA and for the further shift of transalpine freight traffic in anticipation of the full upgrade of the route on the right bank of the Rhine. With the motion 20.3003 on the conclusion of an in ternational treaty for the expansion of the line on the left bank of the Rhine and the motion 22.3000 on the financing of the electrifica tion of the Wörth-Strasbourg line, the Swiss parliament has paved the way for Switzer land's active participation in the expansion of the NorthSouth corridor on the French side as well. The Swiss authorities should now press ahead with negotiations with neighbour ing countries to achieve elec trification and upgrading of the Wörth-Strasbourg line as an alternative route as soon as possible. With relatively little funding, an additional capacity of 60 freight trains per day can be attained with in a few years.

The wag ons with the containers are provided in the respective connecting tracks and loaded with gravel. After loading, they are taken by rail to the respective unloading stations (Vienna Breitenlee, Hall in Tirol/Fritzens Wattens). There, the MOBILER vehicles take over the containers and bring them directly to the asphalt mixing plants in the plant. These raw materials are then used to produce high-quali ty asphalt for motorways and expressways.

In the future, six carrier wagons with a total of 24 spe cially branded MOBILER containers will be used for trans port. Rail logistics by MOBILER combines the advantages of environmentally friendly rail with those of road freight transport and enables uncomplicated handling. What about the trains?

In 1847, the City of New York au thorised the construction of railroad tracks along Tenth and Eleventh Ave nues on Manhattan's West Side. The street-level tracks were used by the NYCR's freight trains, which shipped commodities such as coal, dairy prod ucts and beef. For safety, the railroad hired "West Side cowboys", men who

As a result, the viaduct's construction necessitated the dem olition of 640 buildings. It connected directly to factories and warehouses, allowing trains to load and unload in side buildings. Milk, meat, produce, and raw and manufactured goods could be transported and unloaded

The viaduct was shut down in 1980, when owner Conrail, successor to NYCR, had to disconnect the via duct from the rest of the national rail system for a year. The closure was ne cessitated as a result of the construc tion of Javits Center at 34th Street, which required that the curve at 35th Street be rebuilt.

St John's Freight Terminal was abandoned in 1960 and the southern most section of the line was demol ished in the following decade due to lowByuse.1978, the High Line viaduct was used to deliver just two carloads of cargo per week.
