Victor v Raamsdonk with CH VOILA COCO VON RATIBOR UND CORVEY, and his son Dimitry as a kid. First Best in Show of a French Bulldog at an All Breed show in Holland. 1978

the ancy talk interview with VICTOR alexander VAN RAAMSDONK BREEDER JUDGE FROM DE LA PARURE FRENCH BULLDOGS De La Parure, considered by many to be the “breeder behind the breeders, was founded over 40 years ago by Victor and Riki van Raamsdonk. Many of the top winning French Bulldogs around the world today have come from De La Parure lines. Truly, their influence on the breed cannot be denied. Now, Victor has focused his attention toward judging, and is currently an FCI Judge for 76 breeds, having accumulated judging assignments from all over the world at some of the best French Bulldog shows, including 5 World Dog Shows and the European Dog Show. Victor has also served as President of the French Bulldog Club of Holland for several years and was member of their committee for almost 20 years. His vast experience is untouched in our breed. The Frenchie Fancy spoke with Victor about the De La Parure legacy, his current involvement in breeding and his experience in judging. We hope you enjoy our glimpse into a man who has for so long dedicated his life to the French Bulldog.

FANCY TALK - Victor van Raamsdonk “De La Parure”

What difficulties did you face cultivating a foundation with so little breeders in the breed at the time you started? In 1972 I was living in Holland and the quality of French Bulldogs was very poor. The best Frenchies of Europe were present in Germany.

What is the first dog you remember having that you felt truly represented the standard and why? The first dog I remember was the beautiful Pied Frenchie: “FERNANDEL VON RATIBOR UND CORVEY”, which I saw at the Champion Club Match of Holland in 1974; He was a short build Frenchie, with magnificent head-piece, a square front with much bone, nice neck and topline, excellent ribs and underline and nice angulation, and above all of this, he was of a beautiful colour. I had never seen a Frenchie before that fitted the standard so well.

When you started your breeding program, you had access to French Bulldogs from der Grimmelsburg and Ratibor Und Corvey lines. Do you consider that the French Bulldogs coming from these bloodlines that were used as a foundation to your breeding program would still be competitive in the ring today? Yes, the quality was outstanding in those times in Europe and I believe our top dogs from those times could easily be in the competition nowadays.

What was the life span of a Frenchie from the 70s-80s? Do you believe that their health has gotten better or worse? The life span of our dogs was an average of 11 years. I do not think this has changed much.

FANCY TALK - Victor van Raamsdonk “De La Parure”

De La Parure has been home of some of the most beautiful and influential dogs in our breed, and of course, we all have our favorites. In your opinion, what would be your top 5 males and females that you have bred or owned? My Top males are: - Our first Import, the sun of the famous Fernandel von Ratibor und Corvey: CHAMPION VOILA COCO VON RATIBOR UND CORVEY - WORLD CHAMPION OMAR SHARIF DE LA PARURE - WORLD CHAMPION COLONEL TRUSARDI DE LA PARURE - WORLD CHAMPION ULAN DE LA PARURE - WORLD CHAMPION BARON BALOU DE LA PARURE - WORLD CHAMPION ZENITH DE LA PARURE. For me, the top females are: - CHAMPION UNE BOULETTE BLANCHE VON RATIBOR UND CORVEY - WORLD CHAMPION UNE BOULETTE BLANCHE DE LA PARURE - WORLD CHAMPION PASSION DE LA PARURE - WORLD CHAMPION KAROLINE DE LA PARURE - CHAMPION GERMAINE DE LA PARURE.

If you could recreate a clone of just one of your Frenchies in the past, who would it be and why? For me this would be: WORLD CHAMPION COLONEL TRUSARDI DE LA PARURE. In my opinion, he came the closest to the standard and he was a great stud dog in our breed.

(1) WORLD CH OMAR SHARIF DE LA PARURE; (2) WORLD CH COLONEL TRUSARDI DE LA PARURE and (3) Trusardi head study which inspired (4) the FBDCA National Specialty 1997 National Specialty (100 years Anniversary). 24 frenchiefancy.com

FANCY TALK - Victor van Raamsdonk “De La Parure”

Over your time in French Bulldogs, which of your dogs have been more influential, not just to your breeding program but to the breed as a whole? I think that is WORLD CHAMPION COLONEL TRUSARDI DE LA PARURE in the past, and nowadays CHAMPION FRIEND DE LA PARURE in Great Britain.

What is a trait you would like to improve upon in your current breeding program? The trait which I would like to improve is the length of tail, because I believe that will be an issue in the future here at my continent.

Even though we always hear there is no perfect dog, some French Bulldogs manage to get close to being the complete package. Which of your current French bulldogs do you feel best embodies the breed standard? From the current males, there is at this moment a male who has been for some years TOP STUD DOG OF THE GROUP in Great Britain, the fawn CHAMPION FRIEND DE LA PARURE. From the current females, without any doubt, the brindle female WORLD CHAMPION CRUFTSWINSTER 2012 JARRETELLE DE LA PARURE.

(1) CH COLONEL BLANC DE LA PARURE; (2) MULTI CH DON CAMILO DE LA PARURE; (3) CH GERMAINE DE LA PARURE.

Every breeder has their own process to select and place puppies according to their potential. What are you looking for when you evaluate a puppy for its show potential? For a Frenchie, it is also very important to take into consideration their character and personality. When a Frenchie does not show him or herself properly, he is not a real French Bulldog. I do not like Frenchies with the ears at the side and standing in the ring looking sleepy.

What is one of the nicest Frenchies, other than your own, that you have had to pleasure to meet or judge? One of the nicest Frenchies in my opinion is CHAMPION KINGFRIEND MR. WOW from Mr. Darren Friend and Natalie Friend, from Great Britain. I judged this male in Bangkok and later he was placed BEST IN SHOW under the All Rounder and Breed specialist Fred Peddie.

FANCY TALK - Victor van Raamsdonk “De La Parure”

When judging the French Bulldog, what do you absolutely not tolerate? I absolutely do NOT tolerate: Bad ear placement and bad fronts. For me, it is very important to show the intelligence and power of the breed.

What do you feel are strongest attributes in frenchies in different regions? In North America: The angulation of the hindquarters and Showmanship. In Europe: the Head-pieces and the ears. What I have seen from the dogs in South America is the heavy bone, which I like. Asia is still coming at this moment and works very perfectly with the best lines of the whole world; they show me that they are very clever and they know exactly the details of the different bloodlines. Victor with World CH Colonel Trusardi De La Parure

Let’s talk about coat colors and patterns. For you, what importance is it for a pied French Bulldog to have a clean coat free of ticking? Does the size of the Black Masked Fawn mask matter? Would you show a good pied specimen if they were a “half hooded pied”? Regarding Pieds, I only like to put up the top quality: clean coats free of ticking. The size of the black mask does not matter for me. And yes, I would show a “half hooded” Pied. A great example is the bitch who was two times World Champion: BONBONNIERE BLANCHE DE LA PARURE, who had one of her eyes not completely pigmented. However, she was very close to the standard.

Do you believe that in the future there will be more of a correlation between all the French Bulldog standards worldwide? Do you see Creams and American Fawns ever being accepted in Europe? That will be very difficult to happen with creams, because in my opinion, FCI would never accept a brown nose, brown eyerims etc.

What show do you aspire to judge next? I have been invited to judge several Shows in the future, I am very glad that I was invited to judge and give a seminar about French Bulldogs at the 75th Anniversary Show of The Kennel Club of Uruguay in November 2013. I have also been invited to judge French Bulldogs at Crufts 2016.

Being that it is a dwarf breed and our gene pool is so small, what emphasis do you feel health testing plays in our breed? I think that the organs for breathing are very important for our breed. We must fight against respiratory problems when this appears in our breed. 26 frenchiefancy.com

(1) Victor and his grandsons; (2) MULTI CH & WORLD WINNER 99 ULAN DE LA PARURE; (3) MULTI CH JARRETELLE DE LA PARURE

Where do you feel as breeders we should focus most of our energy in breeding today? Better heads? Improved shape? More bone? For me, the most important is that the Frenchie should be in the first place: A HEALTHY, SOUND, AND GOOD BALANCED DOG.

What is a fault or area of opportunity that you feel is difficult to correct or get rid of when breeding? In Europe, we see many French Bulldogs that lack good angulation of the hindquarters.

If you had a chance to suggest something to be changed or added to the French Bulldog FCI standard, what would it be? NO, I completely agree with the current FCI standard.

i do not tolerate bad ear placement and bad fronts. A few years ago, you started to focus more on the judging aspect of the breed, and your son Dimitry, together with his wife Chantal have had more of a presence as De La Parure. How involved are you and Riki when choosing your breedings and future puppies for show? Or have you “passed the De La Parure Torch? No. We are still advising the breedings and the selection of the puppies. But nowadays, there are 4 sets of opinions and we, as elderly breeders, also still learn from the young ones. Playing Chess in the French Bulldog breed is not always easy. The most important thing is to be honest and critical to yourself and to your own frenchies.

FANCY TALK - Victor van Raamsdonk “De La Parure”

The role of De La Parure in our breed is extensive, and you have actually helped write many important parts of its history. What are some of your personal favorite accomplishments or honors that you have achieved in your breeding program? For me, it was a great compliment that Riki and I, in 2005, were honoured by the Kennel Club of Holland with the GOLDEN MEDAL for our work for the French Bulldog in the World. Also, Riki and I got the HONOUR MEMBERSHIP of THE FRENCH BULLDG CLUB OF HOLLAND in 2007; The greatest honour was when I had the honour to judge the CENTENARY CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW of The French Bulldog Club of Holland in 2007 with a record entry of 406 French Bulldogs from 25 countries.

Chantal & Jarretelle; (top) HUBLOT DE LA PARURE

De La Parure has bred numerous worldwide winners at the best shows around the world. Having achieved this level of quality in your breeding program, what still continues to be your motivation for your kennel’s future? The motivation is that our Dogs will have influence in the World. We have influenced the breed in Europe, Russia, Great Britain, Japan and a little, in my opinion, in the USA. Now we are working on this in South America and Asia. They call De La Parure “THE BREEDER BEHIND THE BREEDERS”, and we are very proud of this.

What do you wish you had been told when you were starting out in the breed? That it is a very hard and difficult path, and that you can meet many disappointments as well.

Thank you Victor, for the opportunity to talk a bit about your experience with our breed for all these years. I want to tell you also that, without my wife Riki, it would have never been possible to create De La Parure. She has always been the intelligence and hard worker behind the SHOW SCENE. Furthermore, I am very proud that my son Dimitry is following the footsteps of his father, and is now also an FCI Judge for French Bulldogs and Pugs, and soon for Boston Terriers as well. 28 frenchiefancy.com

JUDGING FRENCHIES IN ESTONIA

by Hélène Denis, Bulldog Anglais du Quarrylane Cottage & with pictures from Pilvi Jõemägi

F

rench bulldogs – you mean bouledogues! This is OUR breed in France. For sure, it is a popular breed. Very popular! Too popular? This is another question. Today, let’s talk about my appointment to judge in Estonia on August 16th. The day before, we had a seminar for English and French Bulldogs where I presented with slides some information about their standards, and focused on the good points and also the points that we have to be very careful about. 29 frenchies were entered at the show. All colors were shown together, which made a difference for me: in France we have different classes for each color – which means that we give more awards!

36 frenchiefancy.com

The general quality was good and the winners were of high quality. It is common place to say that you cannot see the difference from what you see in your own country, and this is true. I was very cautious with the top lines. This is one of the most important features in this breed and flat toplines, or worse, camel backs will lead to big health trouble. So, they have to be strictly penalized. That’s why I always ask the exhibitors to stack their dog in profile before I make my decision for the placement. Maybe some dogs should have had more spring of ribs, and of course, I saw too many pinched nostrils and very, very short tails. The only thing I was really uncomfortable with was their weight. The standard says 8 to 14

kilos. I saw a few who were far bigger, but as long as the exhibitors say that they are just 14 kilos, you cannot prove it. In France, these dogs are disqualified. In Tallin, I had a champion which was 16 kilos (the owner recognized it)… Anyway, he was looking nice and healthy. But, this puzzled me. I do have to mention that all the exhibitors were “fair play” and my decisions were greeted with applause. What else can I say… We had a wonderful time in the beautiful town of Tallinn and all the people were very kind with us. Dogs bring people together and this is something which I appreciate. the healthy ancy Bettering the Breed: One Test at a Time

by Lori Hunt, DVM & French Bulldog Breeder

I want to breed my French Bulldog, what health testing should I do?

they can and attempt to not double up on less than ideal results in hopes to better the breed!

As breeders, we are keepers of our chosen breed. We are responsible for the health, temperament, and type we create and share with others and that we pass down to future breeders. When you really start to think about it, we are genetic engineers, planning breedings and twisting genes to achieve that look, personality, movement, and so on that we desire. This is a heavy burden and one we shouldn’t take lightly. Health tests are a tool, individual pieces of a larger puzzle. We can then use that information to make the best decisions possible moving forward. The breeder’s job is to take the health test results, and consider them in the larger picture of breed type and temperament and try to make the best decision

I am going to touch on several phenotypic and genetic tests available for the French bulldog and what the results mean. When possible and to keep things simple, I will use data and statistics from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (to be referred to as OFA from hereon out) as it is probably the most noted registry for breeders. There are several others, depending on location, so please check with your local French Bulldog and/or all breed clubs to see which is best to use. October 2013

49

THE HEALTHY FANCY - Bettering the Breed: One Test at a Time

Hip radiographs

All breeds can have their hips radiographed and are assigned a “rating” by various registries. An explanation of how the OFA grades hips is available here as well as a comparison to several other registries: http://www.offa.org/hd_grades.html

1 IN EVERY 3 FRENCHIES HAS HIP DYSPLASIA

As of the writing of this article, the OFA has 1050 Frenchies in their hip database and Frenchies rank 21 of all breeds with at least 100 evaluations for the amount of hip dysplasia in the breed. Frenchies currently have 1.5% excellent rankings and 29% dysplastic. Another way to put it is 1 in every 3 frenchies has hip dysplasia.

Spine radiographs

This is a Frenchie specific test that is in its pilot stage and requires lateral and ventrodorsal images of your Frenchie’s spine from the first cervical vertebrae to the last lumbar one. Dr. Keller is working on determining if there is a pattern to the placement of abnormal vertebrae. So far, no relationship between vertebral anomalies, a.k.a. hemivertebrae, and intervertebral disc disease has been noted. In 2004, there were 245 spines evaluated through OFA. Dr. Keller found that thoracic hemiverterbae were the most frequent, and that 81% of French bulldogs had 5 or less hemivertebrae. In a recent conversation with Dr. Keller, ther e are now over 1000 spines submitted t o the study and these percentages are relatively unchanged. Full results of the initial spine report from 2004 can be found here: http://frenchbulldogclub.org/wp-content/ uploads/2010/10/French-Bulldog-SpineDatabase.pdf While we are still in a state of determining what French bulldog spines mean, we will only find out if we continue to look at them! Having this information is invaluable and the cost for this reading is a mere $20, which as I say, is the cheapest radiologist’s opinion available. An application to submit your frenchie’s spine to the database is available here: http://www.offa.org/pdf/spineapp_bw.pdf

50 frenchiefancy.com

X RAY IMAGES OF SPINES (VENTRODORSAL AND LATERAL) AND HIPS X RAY.

by Lori Hunt, DVM

For patellas, OFA acts just as a keeper of the data. They have a process (http://www.offa. org/pl_grades.html) by which patellas should be graded but any competent veterinarian can do the test itself. But this is where we as a breeder are tested. You can choose to only submit the “good” ones, or all. I challenge everyone to submit all results, so we can get true statistics on this issue in Frenchies. OFA currently has 1363 frenchies with only 5.3% affected with luxating patellas, but I believe this is seriously skewed by the lack of submitting non-passing grades.

CERF/OFA eye exam

This is an exam done by a veterinary ophthalmologist, either through the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) or most recently OFA. The veterinarian will dilate your frenchie’s eyes and search carefully for things like cataracts, lens issues, persistent pupillary membranes, corneal issues, distichiasis, entropian, retinal folds and many more. Some are inherited and this information can be very helpful when planning breeding. A recent discussion with the CERF secretary showed that of all the frenchies tested over the last decade, 15% had heritable abnormalities. More information can be found here: http://www.offa.org/eye_genetics.html

Heart

Cardiac disease is definitely beginning to rear its ugly head in frenchies. Pulmonic Stenosis (PS) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) are the diseases seen most often. There are several ways to check a Frenchies’ heart. Start with auscultation, meaning have a qualified veterinarian listen to your dog’s heart, in several places and in a very quiet place. Any noted murmurs should be explored before breeding. If you have a dog from a line with known heart disease, I suggest having an echocardiogram performed prior to breeding. As with patellas, I believe the OFA database is skewed due to lack of submission of abnormal results. Do the breed a favor and submit them. They can still remain anonymous, but let’s try to maintain an open database. More information can be found here: http://www.offa.org/cardiac_exam.html

Congenital Deafness (BAER) testing

French Bulldogs are also prone to color related as well as a heritable form of deafness. Deafness is most common in pieds, and can be easily masked by the dog if the deafness exists in only one ear, but it does exist in all colors. Brain Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) testing is a simple ten-minute exam done by a certified veterinarian where small 25 gauge needles are placed through the skin and electrodes are attached. Sound is played into the dog’s ear and the brain’s response is measured through the electrodes. This test can be performed on animals as young as 4-5 weeks once the ears have opened and is easily done on whole litters before they go to new homes. These results can then be sent in to OFA. More info on congenital deafness can be found here: http://www.offa.org/deaf_genetics.html

THE HEALTHY FANCY - Bettering the Breed: One Test at a Time

Juvenile Cataracts (JC)

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens and affect vision. This test is a simple cheek swab and an autosomal recessive gene. Dogs are either affected, carrier or clear. By breeding affected or carrier dogs to clear dogs, none of the offspring would be affected and in a generation or two, one could have an entirely clear line, if so desired. All testing labs are reporting close to 30% of frenchies as either carriers or affected. Several labs do testing for this and some offer a discount if several tests are submitted together. More information can be found here: http://www.horsetesting.com/canine/hc.htm

Tracheal Hypoplasia

This is done by radiograph of the chest of dogs at least 12 months of age and helps us see whether tracheal diameter is sufficient for breathing. More information can be found here: http://www.offa.org/th_eval.html

Thyroid

Frenchies can also be hypothyroid. Signs of low thyroid hormone include but are not limited to irregular estrus cycles, obesity, thinning and/or dry and dull coats, pruritis, scabs or scaling of the skin. A simple blood draw can check thyroid levels to determine if this is an issue.

This is a devastating disease of the spinal cord resulting in progressive paralysis in many breeds of dogs. Recently, it is coming to light that French Bulldogs are carrying this gene. At several labs, including OFA and Animal Genetics, Frenchies are coming back with close to 60-70% testing as either “At Risk” or “Carrier”. At Risk dogs are carrying two affected copies of the gene but will not necessarily become clinically affected by the disease. Currently the laboratories are working from information in the genes they have from other breeds, i.e. Corgis, German Shepherds, and Boxers. These breeds have had more samples submitted (as it does require spinal cord tissue from affected dogs to confirm it and thus far, only one has been submitted to the University of Missouri). OFA is currently cautioning that although any dog can be tested, some breeds have genetic backgrounds that may prevent at risk dogs from developing the disease. So for us in Frenchies, an at risk test result does not necessarily mean that they will develop DM, but the genes are there, hence the moniker “At risk” and not “affected”. This is a fairly inexpensive cheek swab DNA test and the information is extremely useful, as just like JC, it is an easy recessive gene that can be carefully bred away from if so desired. http://friskafrallor.info/efrallor_dm.html http://www.caninegeneticdiseases.net/DM/ DM.html http://www.animalgenetics.us/Canine/DM.htm http://www.offa.org/dnatesting/dmexplanation. html PICTURE BY LENA SALMINA - WILA HOGS

Cystinuria

Cystinuria is a genetic disorder in the domestic dog that leads to recurrent urolith (bladder stone) formation. Cystinuria is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder and is characterized by the formation of cystine stones in the kidney, ureter, and bladder. There is hope to have a DNA test commercially available soon through University of Pennsylvania researcher Dr. Paula Henthorn. http://www.caninecystinuria.com/Diagnosis.html http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16845473 http://mastiff.org/images/CystNonTypeIQA2013Jan04.pdf

Closing:

I have attempted to lay out most of the currently available tests for French bulldogs as well as introduce a few more that are new and up coming. It’s up to each and every breeder to decide what they feel is important to test for and to use that information to plan breedings. It’s also up to the entire Frenchie community to share results openly and not judge other breeders’ results, all in the name of “bettering the breed”!

f ancy correction

One of the French Bulldogs that breeder judge Diane Burvee referred to in her article published in our second issue (July 2013), was, in fact, the Multi CH Fancibul Top O’Marco for Palevyh Buldogov, bred by Karen Fore and owned by Elena Kozhevnikova. Here was the breeder judge’s comments about Marco: “It was a young dog I admired. Perhaps a more American-sized Frenchie, in a fetching compact package, there is so much to like about this charming lad, and my appreciation for him didn’t stop at his expressive dark eyes that spoke volumes, his lovely balance, type and unexaggerated headpiece. Good ratio of bone to substance, with correct amount of daylight underneath. Moved in one solid pace and well handled. There is much to like, and rave about him. This dog could be an asset for those that want to control size as well as stature.” October 2013

Je ne parle pas français - by Anna Denisova

f ancy tricks Je ne parle pas français

by Anna Denisova, CTC If there’s anything that defines humans as a species, it’s speech. And boy do we talk a lot when we train our Frenchies. Luckily we can always hide behind the “These dogs are too stubborn” excuse. So I’d like to talk about Human-Frenchie communication this time. I think the argument is worth it, since Frenchies do not speak English or French or Italian. More than likely they have no idea what we think and our logic is absolute nonsense to them. So let us figure out how can we translate our ideas into “Bouledoguese”. We, humans, usually use words and speech to let Frenchies and others know what we want. We call these words CUES. The dictionary says “cue” is a signal, such as a word or action, used to prompt another event in a performance. Some people call cues - “commands”. But we, positive dog trainers, do not command, but kindly ask our pets to behave, so “command”ing is not for us or our dogs, right? October 2013

77

FANCY TRICKS - Je ne parle pas français The first thing to consider when looking for Frenchie understanding is that dogs (and most of other animals) do pay much more attention to movement, than to sound. There was this wonderful story of the horse named “Clever Hans” who was believed to perform arithmetic. Questions were asked both orally, and in written form. And Hans always answered correctly by tapping his hoof. After a long research, it was demonstrated that the horse was not actually performing these mental tasks, but was watching the reaction of his human observers. The horse was responding directly to involuntary cues in the body language of the human trainer.

So do French Bulldogs. Your motion prompts them to behave. I’ve heard so many times breeders tell: “My dog loves shows so my much, that when I pack my car with show equipment, he/she jumps in the car ready to go”. This is a good example of how our action becomes a cue to do or not to do certain things. I personally believe, we must not only remember about this particularity of dogs, but also use it for our own good... just think how comfortable it could be to cue your dog to move his hind legs or ears into the right position when judge is watching by only raising a brow or by a light head tilt?! Okay, dogs are dogs, but we are humans! Talking is important to us. Even if we know that we can cue our Frenchies with motion, we still like to use words. The words, even if initially are not known to Frenchies are not as bad as the way we use them. The Human way. One of the problems dogs face communicating with us is language flexibility. We use so many different words and ways to say the same 78 frenchiefancy.com

thing. Like a simple “Come”, can become “Let’s go”, or “Come on”, or “Hey, do you hear me?”, or even “Sweetieeeeeeee...”. For Frenchies, all these sounds do not mean much, so in most cases they just look at what you do, trying to identify what you want. That’s why, if you want the dog to really learn what the cue means choose a simple word and use it always without exceptions. After you decide what words you will use, the second step is to teach your dog what these words mean. In trainers slang we call it NAME THE BEHAVIOR. To do it correctly you need the dog to associate the cue, for example, “Come”, with the behavior of coming towards you. You can do it by saying “Come” every time just before the dog is coming to you and then give a treat. In other words, you should pronounce the cue right before the desired behavior and then reinforce it. Very soon the Frenchie will learn that this word is a signal to do something that will pay off. Since dogs are smart, they will probably propose you the behavior more times even without you cueing them, but if you want the word to become a real signal, you must ignore (not reinforce) the behavior until you ask for it. So, remember the trick: First you teach (or wait for) the behavior and then you associate a name with it. A very common mistake here is to use the cue the dog doesn’t know and asking for the behavior he doesn’t know yet either. Usually this attempt ends with shouting and some sort of offense towards the animal. Another trait of human communication is repeating the cue again and again hoping for a miracle. That’s funny, because this reminds me how we sometimes talk to foreigners too, we continue to repeat same words thousands of times and expect it will help them to understand. We also do it when we are excited. This habit is very harmful when we talk to dogs. If we say the cue once and nothing happens, than we say it twice and again no response from the dog, then again and again, what the dog actually learns is that this exact word doesn’t mean anything. At least not to him. By repeating the cue many times, we ruin the learning sequence of Signal - Action - Reinforcement, because we skip the last part, too. So the association we desire doesn’t happen.

Je ne parle pas français - by Anna Denisova

And then we yell. We probably hope that the volume will create the energy that would force our animals to obey. Talking louder when the other one doesn’t understand us is our natural reaction. It is essential to keep in mind that loud barking is more a sign of a weakness or juvenile insecurity for dogs. Many people to whom dogs are drawn are laconic and soft-spoken. Probably the lack of barking is perceived as self-confidence and leadership. Having talked about the reasons not to talk often and loud, I’d like to remind you of the occasions when we actually CAN talk, but often do not do it effectively. In other words, the use of “sweet talk” as reinforcement. Sweet talk in dog training is similar to the way old women talk to a small child. It’s a positive high pitch. Even if your Frenchie doesn’t know what the words you say mean, he will perceive that his actions make you happy, when he hears the enthusiastic: “Oooh You Are a Good Doggie! What an Awesome job you’ve done poochie poochie!”. Say it and mean it with all your body language! I have a special sweet voice I only talk to my dogs, so whenever they hear it, they pay attention. All of the above may seem simple and well-known, but the matter is trickier than it looks, because our genetics and habits cause us to behave “the wrong way”. Start listening to yourself. Ask your family members to pay attention to what you actually do say to the dog, maybe even try to videotape yourself and keep the records. Focus on the awareness of the way you talk with your Frenchie and you will automatically become more consistent. See you next issue,

f ancy judging FANCY JUDGING - Janet Furneaux

JUDGING FRENCHIES IN AUSTRALIA

by Janet Furneaux, UK & with pictures from KATIETAKESAPICTURE.COM.AU

I

was very excited to be invited to judge for The French Bulldog Club of Queensland Specialty on 15th of June 2013, and I was certainly not disappointed with my entry and the quality of the exhibits, calling for some very close decisions. This is a Club with an extremely enthusiastic and hard working committee, and it was good to see that although some of them were relatively new to the breed, they were so dedicated especially in exploring and carrying out all aspects to ensure they are breeding healthy frenchies. My BIS winner was a

pied state

bred dog, who had the edge for me on masculinity without being coarse. The baby puppies were exceptionally well schooled and most of excellent type, which must be encouraging for the future of any breed. I am sure people in the breed will be aware there are a few dark brindles with light eyes, please bear this in mind. Overall I felt the breed has achieved a very high standard, imports have also played their part too, and here I must mention the Greenall and McCllelands boy, who to me was typically American, and can be a big part in their breeding programme,

and it was a pleasure to see him at home with his friends bounding around the grounds without a trace of breathing problems in the very hot weather. The very experienced NSW breeder of the Frogwyck kennel has also brought quality to the breed, so please carry on with what you are all doing, because it is very evident you are doing an excellent job. My best wishes for all success to the Club.
