While photographing Emily’s cheerful gift wrap tutorial (found on page 38) we had to snap a shot of her beautiful table. The orange and gold is perfect for autumn parties and Thanksgiving, but is bright and modern the rest of the year as well. Gold flatware sparkles, graphic Greek key napkins stand in china teacups, and hand written place cards help guests find their seats. Dinner is served! (But we don’t want to mess up the pretty display!)

Let’s party
K i ngs gi v i ng Last year I celebrated my first Thanksgiving as Mrs. King and I wanted to make everything. Turkey, mashed potatoes, the whole nine yards. Of course, I always helped my parents with the meal, but this year, I wanted to plan everything. My collection of holiday recipes pulled from years of magazines was too tempting to ignore. Dad was relieved to be able to watch football uninterrupted and Mom was happy to be an onlooker and refill my Thank-tini as I mixed and baked, basted and mashed. Some Florida friends got wind of my plans, and declared a cooking free day. So armed with classy disposable plates and flatware drove up and joined in the fun.
In all, twenty people piled into our
modest house and a tradition was born, Kingsgiving.
This year, we
celebrated it early, as November 28th would find us on an airplane in the South Pacific (teaser comment for our Travel Issue coming in 2014). So forty-plus friends arrived with side dishes, beer, and holiday cheer.

Let’s eat I love carrots, the baby ones with dip, juiced, mashed, but cooked is the worst thing you can do to this bright orange vegetable. That is until I roasted them!
This started off as a mashed
carrot recipe from Food & Wine magazine. But after trying them out of the oven, Izzy and I decided we need not go further in the cooking process. They were delicious, caramelized, sweet, and tasty! Simply preheat oven to 400, half carrots lengthwise and arrange on a baking sheet with cut side down. Rub with olive oil, salt and pepper to taste and bake for 45 minutes.
In addition to coolers of ice for beer, a stocked bar, and bottles of wine, make sure your guests have plenty of water available.
And to make
it as enticing as the libations, throw stuff in it. For Thanksgiving I sliced oranges and added cranberries.
Be sure to squeeze the berries
till they pop to release a little tartness in the water. For other occasions, cucumber and lemon, watermelon and mint, or rosemary and lime are all tasty infusions.
Do this first thing on party
day so the water will have the most flavor. Add ice at the last minute to chill it for the guests.

Let’s eat Sweets and Beets is the most requested side dish at the Kings’ holiday table. Ingredients: 6-8 gold and/or red beets (the smaller the sweeter) 5 sweet potatoes, skinned and cut into 1” cubes 1 shallot, finely diced 1 tablespoon of butter Juice of 1 lemon, and a little zest is nice too 4 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons truffle oil, plus some to drizzle salt and pepper to taste Directions: Roast the beets and sweets the day before. 400 degrees, 30 minutes. Beets should be wrapped in foil, sweets arranged in a single layer with some oil, salt and pepper. When the beets have cooled enough to handle, peel and cube them. Just before serving, sauté the shallot in the butter, then add in the beets and sweets to heat through and brown a bit. In a small bowl, whisk together the last four ingredients.
Toss with the beets and
sweets, serve, and drizzle a little more truffle oil (can’t have too much).
Flowers, candles, candies, and coasters make easy and functional decor on coffee and side tables.

Thanksgiving Inspired Wedding Photo Shoot
Thanksgiving weekend is a popular time for weddings. Families are already coming together and days off allotted, so why not tie the knot? But with this beloved holiday comes the typical decor and color palette: autumnal hues, pumpkins, turkey, cornucopia. We wanted to spice things up for our inspiration shoot, pun intended with the delish spiced apple caramel naked cake with goat cheese filling.
The story goes that the first Thanksgiving celebrated the coming together of different cultures and backgrounds through a feast of celebration. Although history is full of negative accounts between opposing sides; war, famine, et cetera, we wanted to focus on the positive. The melding of cultures, traditions, and customs that created (and continues to influence) the USA. Weddings are also a time to celebrate the uniting of families, beliefs, and ideals. It’s all coming about together.

Armed with an inspiration board filled with images from high fashion, tasty food, and rich colors, our artisans got to work. Jessica Mock of Dollface by Jules researched make-up motifs from native tribes around the world. Her final creations are a beautiful mix of Asian, African, America, and Indian culture with a dash of fantasy. She made a contentious effort not to reference one tribe or culture in particular, but to celebrate them all globally. The floral design is more a collection of produce and grasses then lush petals. Gilded chili peppers and mini pumpkin branches with safari sunset, purple millet, seeded eucalyptus, and broom corn from fiftyflowers.com came pre-mixed in perfect seasonal boxes. Handcrafted jewelry from the world over added glitz and focal points. A gold necklace from India and oversized South American green turquoise. A necklace of agate stones and a painted palm pod made a stunning hair accessory. This photo shoot combines traditional wedding elements with a style that’s fashion forward, a little mysterious, and all together beautiful.
