Dear Paper

Minted is an online stationery company specializing in invites and all things party! They have beautiful wedding suites with every imaginable detail: envelope liners, card backers, and darling address wraps. Our favorite thing about Minted is that the designs and motifs come from independent designers all over the country. So when you order from them, you are still supporting local artists on a global scale. The paper and print quality is super luxe.

6

dear paper

In addition to the digitally printed bell jar example at left, Minted has started offering letterpress (Olivia and Joshua example) and gold foil (Isabella & Charles and the Directions cards). Letterpress and gold foil, two of our most favorite things!!!! The colorful card is a Save the Date, so cute! Many of their cards have options to add your own photos, and some are available in mini booklet format. Check out our Arrivederci fete for examples of invites with coordinating party decor (page 12)! available at minted.com

Jen Jenkins y Foxy Loxy We took a few moments to sit down with Jen Jenkins, former bio tech employee, turned quilter and print maker, and now the purveyor of our favorite stop for a caffeine fix. Foxy Loxy and little sis The Coffee Fox are Savannah must sees and sips.

After working many years for larger corporations and businesses, print maker and quilter, Jen Jenkins, wanted to start a business where she would be at the head table making decisions. But what to build a business on? An avid print maker and fiber artist (her quilts are beautiful!), she knew her business had to be something unique that Savannah was missing. During a trip to France she fell in love with coffee, espresso, and the cafe culture so prevalent there. She knew with the right location and the right coffee, Savannah would fall in love with it too. After finding the property and meeting Philip from PERC, a locally roasted coffee company, Foxy Loxy opened is deliciously scented doors in September of 2011.

A trip to France and drinking noisette at Parisian cafes inspired jen to start a What sort of services or products does your business offer? Foxy Loxy is a quick service cafe, Tex Mex cantina, bakery, coffee house, gallery and that’s just for starters. They also offer micro brews and wine. Leisurely Saturday evenings from 7-11pm can be spent in their courtyard garden sipping 1/2 price bottles of wine and making your own S’mores. Where did the name “Foxy Loxy” come from? Jen’s grandmother, Mildred Foxy, had lots of “foxy’ ephemera. In the early days of the internet and email her AOL name was foxyloxy. This attracted a lot of illicit spam and she was promptly kicked off of AOL. The character Foxy Loxy is in the children’s book, Henny Penny the Sky is Falling. A well worn copy can be found on the bookshelves to delight readers of all ages. What are your top 3 favorite things to do in your free time? It doesn’t happen often, but a free moment would certainly go to studio time to keep the creative energy alive, or traveling. What is your granola recipe? TOP SECRET! <we had to ask> Favorite coffee beverage? Cafe con leche with one raw sugar. What is your greatest extravagance? Eating out! Throw one to wish them a

fond farewell, or a joyous welcome home.

Of course we wouldn’t mind

a party for both. Here are some fun ideas for your next travel themed soiree. Parents can also use these ideas to send their high schoolers off to Europe or a senior trip. Just keep the champagne out of their lemonade, and maybe add it to yours (page 18)!

Let’s party String festive garlands for over the table. Simply order the circle garland kit from Minted with charming reversible discs that arrive pre-cut and pre-punched in adorable patterns. Then make a few mini paper airplanes to string in between the circles. Hang them in wide arcs from the ceiling so the planes look like they are swooping across the table.

If you need

place cards, simply write their name on the plane over their chair.

Use the guest of honor’s destination to inspire your menu. For an island destination like this one: serve bacon wrapped scallops in flower cut sweet peppers, grilled shrimp and pineapple skewers, and little pastry cups garnished with festive colors.

An Asian trip calls for won

tons and sesame chicken pre skewered with toothpicks to serve as appetizers.

A trip to

Italy has lots of options for tomato,, basil, and pasta based dishes. Izzy’s trip to Spain (page 48) shows some of her favorite tapas.

Let’s party You can never have too many cute signs. Direct guests toward the “treats” and “sips”. Add arrows if needed to get guests out of the kitchen and into other rooms or outside. They can always be lured with cookies!

These paper flags

are great on straws for drinks, or bamboo skewers for cupcakes. Go tiny and put them on toothpicks for the sesame chicken bites mentioned earlier.

Summer Lovin'

Getting engaged is one of life’s great moments, and a party is most certainly in order! So we dreamt up

the perfect summer engagement party. The couple arrived via turquoise Vespa to Savannah, Georgia’s

Moon River Brewing Co. who hosted the brightly colored soiree in their dog friendly Beer Garden. Party

guests took a cue from the poppy colors of the invite and wore their preppy best. Beautiful stationary

is the first part of any event. The thought, detail, and vibe of the invitation set the tone for what’s to come. Hand calligraphy for the addresses and vibrant envelope liners hint at something special.

Moon River Brewing Co. is Savannah’s very own microbrewery.

Guests had

their pick of ales, lagers, and stouts from the garage door menu.

Keeping with

the artisnal selection of treats, King of Pops brought an array of handcrafted popsicles.

The Cantaloupe Lemongrass

was a personal favorite.

This colorful

cart will either send a selection of frozen goodness anywhere, or if you’re nearby (Georgia or South Carolina) will come to you. Delicious grilled shrimp, pasta salad, and barbeque sandwiches were served.

After embarking on a couple big trips last winter (and one not so far away) we have lots of fun to share. Keep in mind this isn’t the Foder’s Travel Guide, this guide is about play! We focus on our favorite parts of visiting another country (or city), mostly the food and the shopping, with a couple landmark images thrown in for good measure. LA LATINA y HUERTAS

Looking for traditional Spanish culture, architecture and cuisine; visit the Madrid neighborhoods of La Latina and Huertas. Hand painted tile murals adorn many walls in the area. Bulls are a popular icon throughout Spanish art, decor, and history. La Latina is home to the best tapas in Madrid, particularly on Sundays. A favorite tapa, Pimientos de Padrón is a collection of peppers fried in olive oil and served with salt. One pepper is spicy, the winner (or loser) is the person who finds it. Another favorite for an adventurous eater is Pulpo a la Gallega, boiled octopus garnished with olive oil and paprika served over potatoes.

Of course you have to visit the Opera House, but what’s rarely shown off is the tile work that makes up the iconic roof line, and the fabulous bar underneath it. Crocodile, emu, and kangaroo are all common proteins in the Aussie diet. Kangaroo is by far a favorite when marinated and grilled to perfection..

HUNTER VALLEY

AUST RAL IA A wonderful day trip is a visit to Hunter Valley. Made almost entirely of vineyards, it’s the perfect way to taste a variety of Australia’s local wines. Because of a family connection, we were able to tour Brokenwood’s entire facility and taste wines straight from the barrel. Though I’m not much of a wine drinker, the Semillion was crisp, bright, and cool. Then we traveled to the area’s only vodka distillery for a tasting. Vodka is my favorite libation and with 20 flavors, Hunter Distillery was the highlight of my trip. A spicy chili infusion for Bloody Marys, mandarin orange to add zest to a margarita, and mint chocolate which was suggested to pour over vanilla ice cream. I like the way they thinkWW!

KATOOMBA AUSTRALIA An hour west of Sydney lie the Blue Mountains and the Three Sisters rock formation. The blue hue of the mountains is from the eucalyptus forest growing across them. The oil from the trees hangs in the air, and looks blue when viewed from a distance. Even in the US, talk of Sydney’s bush fires headlined the news. Signs of the devastation stretched for miles as we drove to Katoomba. The scenery looked like another planet as charred black trunks dotted an ochre backdrop. Small specs of green popped as the forest started to grow back. Katoomba has a cute little main street with a fantastic vintage emporium full of treasures. For lunch, an Aussie staple, potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce. A delicious idea I brought home to enjoy Stateside.

AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND

If you are going to cross the entire Pacific Ocean, you might as well take a quick four-hour plane ride from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. Walking around the urban city center provided lots of great, though expensive, shopping and a variety of eateries. The seaside city of Auckland is beautiful, a dramatic skyline against aqua water. With dozens of islands just off the coast, the ferry terminal is a popular place. // The North Wharf has lots of boats and restaurants. // Cute street sign for Dogmatic’s gourmet dogs. // A boat docked at the North Wharf. // Lattes are great, but even better when they are made with a cute patterned espresso machine. // Shakespeare Hotel and Brewery was quaint historic building with the biggest (and tastiest) hamburgers ever.

PARNELL MARKETS

Although the shopping is quite expensive in both Australia and New Zealand, the quality and design of the goods are exquisite. The shops and restaurants at Britomart were a favorite. From designers like Karen Walker and Ted Baker, to a charming paper store called kikki.K every item was more luxurious than the next. Thoughtfully designed and carefully constructed, it was easy to see why they would fetch such a high price. Go for an extremely long walk (we should have taken a cab) on a Saturday morning to the Parnell Farmers’ Market. The market has rows upon rows of local produce, flowers, herbs ready for planting, a bread maker, homemade ice cream, an entire stand with a variety of hummus and tapenades, and a permanent structure offering New Zealand’s finest wines. Live music and friendly locals make it a fun place to grab a bite and people watch.

MIL SE

I’ve been a fan of Rachael McMahon’s blog, Made From Scratch for some time. Her beautiful images, meticulous style, and delicious recipes tick all my favorite boxes. So naturally when I knew I was traveling to Auckland I had to contact the New Zealander to see if she lived anywhere nearby, and fantastically that’s where she’s from. We agreed to meet for lunch and when she suggested we eat dessert instead, I know we had more in common than a love of

74

great style. She took me to the beautiful treat of Milse and it quickly became my favorite part of the whole trip! Located in the Britomart shopping area down a tiny vine covered walkway, the uber petite patisserie looks like a chocolate bar with its cut wood paneled interior. It is quite small and seats only a dozen or so patrons at a time. Most people request “take away” to enjoy their treats at home. Hundreds of perfect desserts line the pastry cases as you walk in tempting the eye and the palette with vibrant colors

Let’s tRAVEL & eat: Auckland and beautiful garnishes: tiny jars hold layered verrines, charming tarts, vivid macarons, and an assortment of bonbons. In the evenings the chef prepares an a la carte menu of highly complex desserts celebrating one key ingredient. Beetroot is a popular ingredient in both Australia and New Zealand, so when listed on a dessert menu, I had to try it. The chef expertly paired it with dark chocolate and raspberry. All of the ingredients were presented in a variety of preparation techniques: chocolate mousse, a beet tuile cookie,

raspberry sorbet, beet merienge, dry ice frozen raspberries, and chocolate “soil dusted the plate. We sat at the bar and watched the plating process. Everything is brilliantly organized in containers and bottles. Fresh potted herbs line the window sill and are constantly harvested for the perfect little leaf to garnish. The presentation is perfection. Out of the three complete days we spent in Auckland, I visited Milse four times. It is such a lovely, special place with carefully and artfully crafted dessert creations.

Kyle Millsap and boyfriend, Daniel Rawlings, recently purchased this 1941 bungalow and quickly started making it their own. The house exudes Kyle’s love of historical, gathered, collected items, with a bit of playful whimsy for good measure. By adding a set of French doors to open onto the deck, they turned the unused third bedroom into this much loved den.

The collection of vintage sea faring art nod to Daniel’s

profession as a boat captain. Kyle hand painted the patterned wall behind the mid century modern emerald chair. His favorite resources to scour for great vintage finds are Ebay, Those Were the Days in his hometown of Warrensburg, Missouri, Habersham Antiques in Savannah for furniture, Wright Square Antiques for small items, and Shop SCAD for his fabulous art collection. Spending an afternoon in this charming home is barely enough time to appreciate the thoughtful details found throughout the space.
