THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL In 2019, the saga of baby Beth dominated – and ratings soared! The little girl may be back with her parents Liam (Scott Clifton) and Hope (Annika Noelle), but the fallout from her kidnapping continues... Thomas (Matthew Atkinson), who was complicit in keeping the tot from Hope, is as dogged as ever in his quest to win Hope’s heart. This year, he’s taking a different approach. Thomas will enlist Zoe (Kiara Barnes), who also has fences to mend as she knew the truth about Beth, in his ongoing scheme to make Hope his wife and mum to longsuffering son Douglas (Henry Joseph Samiri). Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) is no fan of Zoe’s – but Liam will urge his ex to give her a chance. She could be most useful ally when it comes to exposing Thomas’ duplicity. But can Zoe be trusted? No-one could blame her if she were to develop feelings for Thomas, equal parts charming and conniving, even though she knows what he’s capable of doing Thomas may feel he ca get to Hope not ye being openly obsessive about wanting her, but by playing hard to get. If Thomas pretends to be interested in Zoe, he might be able to make Hope jealous. Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) and Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) realise their marriage is in jeopardy. Th haven’t been able to come a meeting of minds as far Thomas is concerned. Rid sees Thomas as a son he wasn’t always there for and is trying to make up for tha time now. Conversely, Broo views Thomas as a truly dangerous man, one she doesn’t want hanging arou her daughter. Also, Brooke knows that Thomas is clea no fan of hers, either! He’d only too happy if Ridge an Brooke were to split up. Watch for an option to b presented that would allow Brooke and Ridge to be ha together once more, but b 4

BROKEN HEARTS! WHAT’S AHEAD ON B&B, DAYS AND Y&R IN 2020

It’s a new year and decade, but soap fans can expect more drama, romance, adventure and intrigue on The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless. Here’s a look at what’s ahead… Liam, Hope & Thomas

Sally, Wyatt & Flo

do split, to see Denise ) circling he hunky man and making for him. nd Ridge shared y heartfelt ersations Shauna been e for him way that oke hasn’t.

Shauna’s savvy enough to know that Ridge isn’t going to get over Brooke in a week, but she may be willing to stick around to see if she can cement a place in Ridge’s life down the track. Quinn’s (Rena Sofer) reaction to Shauna’s interest in Ridge has been supportive – thus far. But there was a time when Quinn harboured her own feelings for Ridge. Of course, she’s happily married to Eric (John McCook), but is Quinn really prepared to be Ridge’s stepmother? That’s a long way from happening, of course, but Quinn might raise an eyebrow over a serious Shauna/Ridge pairing... watch this space. The Forresters aren’t just about their social interactions. The family’s still running a top design business and the drama will shift to the company as the new year dawns. Hope needs a designer for her fashion line, but the last person she wants to work with is Thomas, given their history and Liam’s objections to his presence in Hope’s life. However, after reaching out to other candidates, including Sally (Courtney Hope) and Quinn, Hope may find that she’s running out of options for someone to at as her designer partner. Sally’s devoted to Wyatt (Darin Brooks), despite a recent slip in which she called her beau “Liam”. It seems Sally can’t totally forget what Liam has meant to her. And he’s not the only man in

her past. There was a time when Sally and Thomas were committed to one another. Watch for the ex-lovers to cross paths, not necessarily romantically, but the two designers will be poised to face off on the runway! Bill (Don Diamont) and Katie (Heather Tom) found love again last year and survived a major health crisis after Flo (Katrina Bowden) donated her kidney to her aunt. Bill has his sons back at Spencer Publications and all appears right in his world – for now. But can he really commit to just one woman? Could Katie withstand another betrayal? Due to B&B’s half-hour format, a few characters have been simmering on the backburner while other stories play out. The year 2020 could eventually present more screentime for Maya (Karla Mosley), Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor), Donna (Jennifer Gareis), and Justin (Aaron D. Spears). Traditionally, B&B is known for, among other things, weddings and return visits. Perhaps 2020 is the year in which Pam (Alley Mills) and Charlie (Dick Christie) finally tie the knot? Maybe Bill and Katie will remarry? Thomas is determined to get a mother for Douglas. Could that cause him to head to the altar, whether or not his bride is Hope? Also, weddings are known to bring familiar faces home for short stays. Forrester International is a current home for many family members who ache to see returning loved ones. 5

sneak preview Arguably for Days, 2020 began last year when the show embarked on its compelling time-jump saga! Viewers have been glued to their seats watching stories unfold to see how beloved characters ended up where they are now. Watch for Ben (Robert Scott Wilson), back in prison after being convicted of killing his sister Jordan (Chrishell Hartley), to make one final appeal, hoping to prove his innocence. His staunchest ally is Ciara (Victoria Konefal), who’s kept the faith. Watch for Ciara to confront her grandfather Victor in a bid to help Ben win his freedom. Ciara will Ciara demand Victor comes clean over his role in sending Ben down. Victor does have something to say to his granddaughter, but it’s not what she’s expecting to hear. Will Ciara succeed in helping Ben get out of jail? Or is he destined to remain behind bars for a crime he doesn’t believe he’s committed? Stephen Nichols has already returned to the screen

when you add Jordan in the time-jump – and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) has found a new life with Justin (Wally Kurth), who’s trying to move forward following the death of his beloved Adrienne (Judi Evans). Can Kayla and Justin truly make a proper go of it romantically, now with Steve back? Kayla’s found much to

top of the list when it comes to those romantic pairs. Many feel it’s not a question of “if” Kayla and Steve will find their way back to one another, but rather “when”. Justin may eventually have to find another woman to help him mend his broken heart. Unless there was a slip-up covered up that we don’t know about yet over the last year, Princess Gina (Kristian Alfonso) has been getting away for ages with fooling everyone into believing she’s Hope. But not even someone as crafty and conniving as her can get away with a charade forever. Watch for Rafe (Galen Gering) to grow suspicious of “Hope’s” behaviour. He can’t handle the job of getting to the truth alone, however. Rafe will reach out to someone who knows Hope better than anyone else – her son Shawn (Brandon Beemer). Shawn’s spent some time in New York with Belle (Martha Madison) But he’ll be making some appearances on the app as Shawn helps his former stepdad in trying to get to the bottom of “Hope’s” behaviour. them having a future together after everything they’ve been through together – especially the loss of their child? As Kristen attempts to become a part of Brady’s life once more, Nicole (Arianne Zucker) will want to intervene. Nicole’s hardly perfect herself but she doesn’t want to see Brady get hurt again. Watch for her to dip into a familiar bag of tricks to keep Brady and Kristen apart. Nicole is simply going to lie to Kristen that she and Brady are together, hoping that will deter her from bringing inevitable heartache to Brady. The question is, however, will Nicole really be lying? Or does she actually have Rafe true feelings for Brady? The timejump has been a massive undertaking on the part of everyone involved with Days. Viewers saw how beloved favourites were handling and celebrating their lives a year into the future while Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) was in a coma, her loved ones not knowing if she’d ever come back to them. Fans have had many of their most pressing questions answered, but they’re still left wondering exactly how everyone got to where they are now. Did the people no longer with us truly shuffle off this mortal coil? Or is there more to the story? Watch for a special week of episodes that will shed light on one crucial, life-changing night that occurred during the great Salem time-jump. Questions will be answered, but don’t be surprised if in the process even more queries are raised! These are interesting times ahead for Days fans!

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS While Salem had its Victor official time-jump last year, Genoa City made an unofficial nod the past by returning many familiar faces to the canvas, while placing those characters in front-burner stories! Watch for those familiar characters to maintain their place in the forefront of the action as 2020 kicks off! Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), having emerged victorious from a health scare last year, prepares to celebrate a huge milestone for the Newman family and its legacy. This story times with, perhaps not so coincidentally, Eric 40th anniversary with Y&R! The show has shot special tribute episodes dedicated to Melody Thomas Scott, who celebrated 40 years as Nikki last year, and to Peter Bergman, who marked 30 years as Jack, also in 2019. It’s only logical that Y&R give Eric similar treatment in 2020 Nikki in honour of four decades of the moustachioed mogul! Victor’s not the only one planning a big event. Nikki will also be planning a special project – one that she hopes will surprise

Jack

her family. It could be related to Victor or be something else entirely! Meanwhile, Jack and the Abbott clan continue to drive the action in Genoa City. There have been changes galore at Jabot Cosmetics over the years including Traci (Beth Maitland) helming Jabot, albeit briefly. Last year, Billy (Jason Thompson) stepped down from the family business and the year 7

and their relationship. He’s been thrown for a loop ever since Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) came to Genoa City. Amanda maintains that she was duped into trying to get Devon Devon to give up the late Katherine’s (Jeanne Cooper) estate, and that her resemblance to Devon’s late wife Hilary is completely coincidental. As 2020 progresses, Elena will ask both Devon and Nate (Dominic Sean) for help with a passion project in Genoa City. However, no matter how busy she gets, Elena is not going to ever relax around Amanda. She knows that both men may be susceptible to Amanda’s beauty and her wily, sexy charms. However, Amanda is going to have more than an influence on Devon and Nate. She’s also struck up a friendship of sorts with Billy, who has found himself at a crossroads in life, as evidenced by his voluntary exit from Jabot. Billy’s not sure of what he wants out of life and Amanda is not sure what Genoa City has to offer her, now that her initial reason for visiting has appeared to have concluded – at least as far as she is concerned. Billy and Amanda will find themselves in a dangerous situation, which will lead them to question the true nature of their relationship. Is Billy truly committed to Victoria (Amelia Ashley

Amanda

Heinle)? Or is he finding that Amanda can bring something to his life that poor Victoria can’t? And if Billy finds a new significant other then will Victoria look around for one, too? Victor’s never thought much of Billy – his calling him “Billy Boy” is not quite done in an endearing tone – so, if his daughter’s marriage were to become jeopardised, then Victor just might be OK with that! When last we saw Cane (Daniel Goddard), he was determined to bring his father Colin (Tristan Rogers) to justice for his role in trying to defraud Devon of all of his money. But Cane’s not the only person determined to bring down Colin. Jill (Jess Walton) is going to put her globetrotting on hold in order to remain in Genoa City so she can assist Devon in bringing Colin to justice. She’ll also keep an eye on her son Billy and her grandson Chance (Donny Boaz). If the two men come into conflict, they’re going to need a referee – and who better than strongwilled Jill to keep the boys in line? Longtime Y&R fans will be especially pleased that Jill is going to enjoy a highter profile. One of the show’s most poignant moments last year was her talking to Katherine’s portrait, a reminder that death may end a life, but not a relationship. The year 2019 saw many happy returns to Genoa City: Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan), Kevin (Greg Rikaart), and Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) among them. After an all-too-lengthy absence, Paul (Doug Davidson) returned to more active duty as situations called for Police Chief Williams to be on hand. Might there be more? The show’s rich 45-plus-year history is bursting with characters, many of whom could return as storylines dictate! TVS

After Hope exposes their relationship, Ciara and Ben work hard to convince her that Ben is a ch Revelling in the afterglow of making love for the first time, Ciara (Victoria Konefal) and Ben (Robert Scott Wilson) are a portrait of bliss as they snuggle in bed, consumed by thoughts of each other and their future together. Unfortunately, reality quickly intrudes when Stefan (Brandon Barash) summons Ben to help search for a missing Holly. But while Ben is in the shower, Hope (Kristian Alfonso) appears on his doorstep surprising her scantily clad daughter. Hope’s confusion only doubles when a naked Ben steps out of the shower, clad in only a towel!

Reeling at the sight of Ben, Hope is flabbergasted as he asks Ciara to join him in the shower before he realises her mother is there. Stammering over the awkward moment, Hope asks for Ben’s help with the search for Holly – but after he returns to the shower, she wastes no time in confronting her daughter about her relationship with Ben. “You’re having sex,” Hope quips, as Ciara swears she was ready and begs her mum to understand that Ben makes her happy – he’s a kind and generous person who respects her. Nonetheless, Hope is

disturbed that her daughter loves a serial killer, and hits the roof when Ciara compares Ben to her father Bo, reminding her mother that Doug (Bill Hayes) never liked Bo when he and Hope first got together. Hope is taken aback when Ciara thinks Ted (Gilles Marini) is destroying her marriage to Rafe (Galen Gering). She wants her and her mum to start trusting each other’s judgement when it comes to their romantic relationships, and, realising she has a point, Hope backs down. When Ben finds out that Hope knows he and Ciara are sleeping

In shock, Ciara seeks comfort with Ben as she reveals how the death of her older brother Zack affected her family years ago. Her angst only deepens when Tripp reports that although Haley has passed the latest immigration test and won’t be forced to leave the country, it could take years for her to get her green card, meaning he has to be her “husband” for a long time yet. Going berserk at the news, Claire seethes when Haley and Tripp ask her to move out of the apartment, as they need to make their marriage appear authentic to the authorities. Angrily packing her bags, Claire suddenly fixates on Haley and Tripp’s wedding photo and impulsively rips it in half. Clutching Haley’s half of the image, Claire snatches her lighter, and is about to burn the photo when Tripp appears. Covering her actions, Claire moans to him, believing he’s

riting her latest novel, Traci (Beth Maitland) has taken inspiration from the people around her to create the story of a world-famous private detective intent on exposing a fellow police detective’s wife for wanting to murder her husband’s extramarital lover! In fleshing out her characters, Traci has used Cane (Daniel Goddard) and Lily’s (Christel Khalil) real-life ailing marriage to envision Cane as the detective, Flynn, and Lily as the aggrieved wife of the other detective, Iris. Standing over a beaten Flynn as he lies defeated in an alley, the detective vows to kill him and frame Iris for his murder, unless he does exactly as his foe says. Iris angrily pulls a gun and shoots Flynn – he manages to return fire, hough, shooting her before he collapses. Smiling as she writes hat Iris dies, Traci imagines Velma arriving and lovingly begging Flynn not to die. As Flynn kisses Velma and promises not to, Traci ends her story. Consumed by thoughts of wanting Flynn and Velma’s kiss o become a reality for her and Cane, Traci is soon startled when Cane visits her, thrilled to learn the book is finished. He eagerly reads it and is pleased to learn that Velma saved Flynn. Announcing that he’s in awe of Traci’s talent, Cane tenderly kisses her. Springing from the liplock, Traci is giddy to think her fantasies have come true, and awkwardly exclaims her happiness at finishing the novel. Cane is so proud of her, and declares his plans to throw a celebratory bash. Soon, Jack (Peter Bergman) notices his sister’s euphoric mood. As she chats to Cane on the phone, Jack can’t help but realise that his sister is falling in love with him. TVS

Nevertheless, thoughts of the pair continue to fill Adam’s mind as he goes about his daily life. usan Seaforth Hayes is a TV legend in every sense of the word. She’s lived onscreen as Julie in Days of Our Lives since 1968; the show itself is one of the longest-running in TV history. She and her real-life husband Bill Hayes – who also plays her husband Doug on Days – were the first soap stars to ever appear on the cover of Time, cementing their status as daytime TV’s original supercouple. Together, they’ve seen it all on the show, from murder, mayhem and matrimony to characters returning from the dead – even Marlena being possessed by the Devil! Susan chats to TV SOAP about her amazing career on Days (and where she’s taking it next), the secrets of its everlasting appeal, and what her husband thinks when she kisses someone else onscreen.

It’s an honour to be chatting to one of the true institutions of Days.

I’m an institution! I have been institutionalised from time to time. My character appeared on the very first episode of Days of Our Lives – she was a teenager then, and I’m of course a grandmother now, both on the show and in real life. I’ve earned my stripes, as they say. I’ve been very fortunate to have received a Lifetime Achievement award for the role. Both my husband and I got that a couple of years ago, I think for lasting and getting to have the fun of appearing in Salem, USA, all this time.

Words by Charles Purcell

It’s amazing that you’ve literally grown up with the viewers over the decades. And it’s amazing to us, because we will meet viewers and fans of the show who are standing there with five generations – a babe in arms, a middle child, a mother, a grandmother and a great grandmother. Five generations have now enjoyed and are continuing to enjoy Days of Our Lives. We’re very happy about that.

You and Bill are the original soap supercouple. We like to think so! We fell in love as actors on the show, and then the writers decided 20

LEGENDS

Since its very first episode in 1965, Susan Seaforth Hayes has been at the core of Days of Our Lives. And she’s not going anywhere! that our characters would fall in love as well. Originally we were just cast to be ships passing in the night, but our head writer looked at us and said, “I see sparks.” He put us together, and we’ve been sparking ever since.

You don’t have to fake the chemistry when it’s there in real life. Sure don’t! I’m crazy about him, and he still puts up with me. I’d say it’s a happy marriage.

How does Bill feel when you have to kiss another actor, and vice versa? We’re actually very supportive of each other’s performances. So if he has a love scene and it’s going well, and the girl is beautiful and likes him, then I’m cheering them on. And the same has been the story with me. We’ll be happy to brag about it; we have a very solid,

supportive, non-jealous relationship with each other.

Gabi seems to be your nemesis at the moment. My big fight with Gabi has become a theme. I can report that as of this morning, things were not much better.

You recently got a heart transplant from Stefan. There’s this belief that if you get someone else’s heart, you could also inherit their memories. I’m waiting to see my character turn into a villain because of that heart. So far, I have nothing to report – I’m still Julie. I haven’t grown a beard and my eyes haven’t turned a lovely shade of dark brown. So I guess he hasn’t controlled me... Not yet, at least.

An amusing twist would be if you wind up bonding with Gabi. Some of that is happening, and some of that is not happening. You’ll just have to stay tuned, I’m afraid.

How have you grown the character of Julie over the years? I read that she was a bit of a bad girl at first. She was a bit of a bad girl. She was a sexual person and she continues to be a loving person, so she speaks her mind. I would say she’s a character that’s described by every writer we’ve ever had as feisty, which means that things happen when she comes into a room. And I really appreciate that. And of course, being a member of the Horton family – the core family on Days of Our Lives – she is loyal to her family members, regardless of what they’re going through. I think she, at this moment in time, is like a lot of grandmothers in the world. She adores her grandchildren and she wants to help them get through their lives. And whether they want to hear it or not, she gives them her advice.

There’s something very reassuring about the continuity of the Horton clan throughout the decades – no matter what, they stick together! Well, the Corday family are great believers in the strength of the show being in the heart of a family that sticks together.

And I think that throughout history, a family that sticks together lasts. We like to be an example of that, where we’re also an example of rampant sexuality, violence and excitement. But basically, it’s a loving group. So there you go. I’m happy to be a Horton.

Viewers always love the tradition of Julie putting the ornaments on the Horton’s Christmas tree. We love that tradition. And when they bring in the box of ornaments, there’s a lot of “Watch out. Be careful. These are the original ones, the only ones we have.” A couple of years ago, we retired three ornaments and sent them to the Smithsonian Institution. My husband and I, and Deidre Hall, were fortunate enough to be invited to present those to the Smithsonian. That was a great day for us. The Smithsonian Institution is the number one museum of American history, located in Washington, DC, and it’s quite a coup to have your ornament hanging in there.

Ken [Corday] recently said that the famous hourglass from the show is being presented to the Smithsonian as well. Right. He’s a charming man and he was very, very proud of that. He inherited the show from his mother and father, and has carried on splendidly all these decades. His father created the show, but passed away quite quickly following that. Then his mum took over, and then she passed, and it was Ken’s time to step up – and he’s done a great job. He was originally a musician, and that’s what he wanted to do; in fact, he composes all the stings [short musical phrases] in the background music for the show now. So he’s getting to do what he wanted to do and more. He inherited all these actors.

Can you tell me what’s coming up on the show? A couple of shocking changes. And a couple of characters that you have missed make their return. Characters being manipulated by an evil force. Plus, some unexpected changes of character. There’s some delicious stuff coming up! TVS 21

o matter what the job is, work can often be one hell of a bore – so it always helps to have friends there who can make each day more bearable. Luckily for Shane (Nicholas Coghlan), his rosters at The Waterhole have become far more doable of late, thanks to the close new friendship he’s struck up with Roxy (Zima Anderson). Grateful for Shane’s support after he defended her against the unwelcomed advances of Kyle (Chris Milligan), Roxy revels in their blossoming connection – and, true to her

provocative nature, she can’t resist luring Shane into playing a few cheeky tricks and breaking a few rules to pass the time at the pub. Naturally, their eagle-eyed boss Sheila (Colette Mann) quickly exposes their shenanigans, and warns them to smarten up their acts! Furious at their antics, she also can’t help but report Shane’s behaviour to Dipi (Sharon Johal), warning her that her husband has been getting suspiciously friendly with Roxy of late. Given the recent fractures in their relationship, Dipi’s

on high alert, and worries that Roxy will easily lead Shane astray. Sure enough, she’s proven right when the pair participate in a customer satisfaction survey at the pub, and Roxy convinces Shane to cheat on it. Yet again, their naughtiness is rumbled, leaving Dipi horrified when they receive an official warning from the boss! Frustrated, Dipi confides her fears to Sheila, admitting that Shane’s friendship with Roxy makes her uncomfortable. Placating her friend, Sheila suggests Dipi spice up her marriage to distract Shane

from Roxy – but the raunchy Rebecchi’s sexy surprise for her man is ruined when Roxy goes on a drunken bender and calls on Shane for help! Angry, Dipi confronts Shane and unleashes her true feelings when he gets home! But he scoffs at her concerns that Roxy may end up seducing him, assuring his wife that he and Roxy are just colleagues. Distrustful of the young blonde in her husband’s circle after those words of advice from Sheila, Dipi monitors the pair’s activities at work – and is quickly perturbed by what she witnesses!

Outraged at the move, Shane blasts Dipi, accusing her of interfering in his work. As the pair end up in an argument, it’s clear that the rift in their marriage is widening...

isery is overwhelming Kyle as he struggles to deal with an avalanche of problems in his life. Devastated by his sudden break-up with Amy (Zoe Cramond) – after their falling out over the class action lawsuit that stemmed from the spycam saga at Lassiter’s, as well as her refusal to have a baby with him and decision to focus her energies on a troubled Jimmy (Darcy Tadich) – Kyle is wallowing in self-pity. He feels as though he’s useless to everyone around him. Fortunately, Toadie (Ryan Moloney) notices his mate’s low state, and gives him a confidence boost by asking him to lead the mentor programs that the Buddy Club is running at the Foundation. Kyle initially refuses, telling Toadie that there’s no point in him mentoring anyone when he can’t he even keep his own life steady! However, Gary steps up to show his son that he can be a man worthy of anyone and anything around him. Buoyed, Kyle accepts the position, and with Toadie and Terese’s (Rebekah Elmaloglou) generous support, passes a test run of the Buddy Club with flying colours – giving him a sign that he will be able to help the troubled young kids who are part of the program. High on

However, Kyle’s confidence is instantly shattered when he gets distracted from the Rebecchi kids with Buddy Club business, and Nell promptly disappears! Kyle’s a nervous wreck as a desperate search for her begins, bitterly chastising himself for taking his eyes off her and thus proving he’s hopeless as a mentor and father figure! Despite Nell being found at the site of Sonya’s newly erected mural, Kyle remains an emotional mess, even refusing an understanding Toadie’s response that these things can happen... Beating himself up, Kyle promptly resigns from the Buddy Club – but a worried Toadie asks him to run at least one activity before he makes his mind up. Kyle reluctantly agrees, but as the pressure weighs him down, Terese steps in to supervise and twigs that Kyle isn’t coping. When one of the kids suddenly needs Kyle’s help, he faces a tough choice: does he step up to the challenge and assist, or walk away from his chance to make a real difference? TVS 23

fter declaring to his doctor his abject hatred of – and intention to destroy – the “bastards” that are his father Jack, half-sister Sara and brother-in-law Steve, enigmatic John Blackwell, the former District Attorney of Bay City, makes good on his promise to return to his hometown and execute his vendetta. The devastating news of his son Damian’s drug overdose during a raid on Steve’s Masquerade bar is only further fuelling his desperate bitterness. As Damian (Erik Fellows) languishes in a coma in hospital, a black leather-clad John (Ronn Moss) strides into the closed Garrett Tavern on the waterfront and demands a drink from the bartender – before a clearly stunned Zoey Johnson (Taylor Stanley) tries to eject him. Instead, John unnerves her with his menacingly cryptic

comments, ominously advising her that he “knows who she is,” and causing her to scurry away in a panic... Continuing to stamp his fearful reputation on the locals, he next startles Police Captain Elliot Sanders (Charles Shaughnessy) from a drunken slumber, and orders the law enforcer to a meeting at the tavern. Rebuffing Ellliot’s shock over his return from the dead, John says he has a revelation that will blow Elliot’s mind. Knowing he can’t refuse John, Elliot appears, intrigued by the unfolding mystery. Meanwhile, John also touches base with his distraught wife Katherine (Judi Evans) as she holds an endless vigil at an unresponsive Damian’s bedside. Finding comfort in the hospital chapel, Katherine is shaken by John’s demand to stop spouting her religious babble

and quickly hangs up, stung by his absence as she prays to God – before accepting the kind words of a priest. Kindness is far from Marly Garrett-Nelson’s (Martha Madison) as she returns to the family mansion after a long absence, enforced by the loss of custody of her son. Her reunion with her mother Sara (Mary Beth Evans) is patently awkward as she catches her up on her life away from town, but upon learning that Sara recently caught Pete (Kristos Andrews) in bed with Janice Ramos (Lilly Melgar), Marly hits the roof! Storming Janice’s doorstep, Marly issues a lightning-shock warning to the family nemesis. Viciously slapping Janice’s face, Marly spits, “stay away from my mother” – before strutting off, leaving her brother’s lover certain that she’s just made herself a new enemy.

Around Bay City ● Upset because Sara used her father’s political power to get Steve (Matthew Ashford) released on bail after the Masquerade raid, Lex (Tristan Rogers) defiantly vows to bring down Steve and save Sara from her nightmarish marriage. ● Making sexual advances towards Lianna (Jade Harlow), Steve orders her to seduce Lex in an act of revenge for the raid, and with the hope of destroying his police career. ● Newly employed as his wife Sofia’s (Jacklyn Zeman) secretary, former prostitute Orchid (aka Marissa Ramos (Terri Ivens), torments Jack over their affair. ● Lianna’s brother Manny (Ignacio Serricchio) returns to Bay City, still blissfully believing that his business associate Pete is dating Lianna, unaware he’s sleeping with his mother! ● Newspaper reporter Nathan Perkins (Scott Bailey) is fired from the Bay City Herald after publication of his scandalous article about Steve... onest question: is there a man on this planet who can wear a suit better than Jon Hamm? If there is, we’ve never met him. Portraying ad exec Don Draper for seven seasons of Mad Men, Jon Hamm personified masculine elegance and the art of matching a tie to a suit. He was named one of People magazine’s sexiest men alive in 2008 – but away from the cameras the star rarely dons a sexy suit. He lives in LA, but not in the Hollywood or Beverly Hills. He loves playing baseball in his neighbourhood and lives a simple life, true to his Midwest upbringing. Losing both his parents at an early age, Jon had to overcome very daunting odds to will his way to success. He taught eighth-grade students right after graduating, but had to go three years without even a single acting job after moving to LA. After the end of Mad Men in 2015, he expanded his career by playing both lead and supporting roles in dramas and comedies. Then 2019 seemed to indicate that his career had finally reached a new level, landing a leading role

It’s an interesting movie. And it’s an original story, which we don’t see very often anymore. Most big studio movies now are based on a book, a park ride, a comic book, a game... The filmmaker on that one, Drew Goddard, is a very talented and interesting individual. He made a beautiful film. He was able to extol those talents with storytelling into something that people weren’t expecting. Because that’s what we used to go to movies for: to be surprised and to be wowed – but by the story itself, not by the CGI or visual effects.

Your character starts off as a good guy but by the end, he’s gone through a pretty significant shift in character… The story is that we all have our secrets – every character in the story. And the hotel itself has its secrets. That’s the appeal of that particular story. It’s a mystery, and those are particularly fun for people to try and suss out as they sit through the story.

You’re in the new Top Gun sequel. What did the original movie mean to you? The original movie came out in ’85, so I was 15 years old – the perfect demographic to see that movie! It had fast planes, fast cars and pretty girls. It was a watershed movie – not only for those that watched it, but for Tom [Cruise] and his career. This guy has been a movie star for four decades! The Report

opposite Natalie Portman!

Lucy in the Sky

I’ve seen the footage, and it’s spectacular! It’s rare for me to be in a big-budget movie like that.

Did you do a lot of flying? I did not, no! Fortunately, I didn’t have to do any of that. Those that did, I give crazy props to, because they had an awful lot of training to do. They’re not actually flying the plane, but they’re in the plane being flown by a professional.

Is the sequel going for the same vibe as the original, or is it made in more of a contemporary style? The thing about Top Gun is that it’s a straight-up crowd-pleaser. It’s a fun movie that does all the things you want it to do. It’s got the aeroplane dogfights and the snappy dialogue. It appeals to everyone: even people that didn’t see the first movie, or weren’t alive when it came out.

Did you wear the shades? Oh yeah! I think there will definitely be a spike in the sale of leather jackets and sunglasses when the movie comes out!

You have a political movie coming out called The Report. What was it like to play a real-life character? I play Denis McDonough, who 32

had a big role in the Obama administration. There was a lot of malfeasance back then, and it was all done under the guise of, “We have to do this because of terrorism, because if we don’t, we’ll have another 9/11.” What the movie tries to say is, “Yeah, we made a lot of mistakes, but at least in this particular instance, we owned up to them.” You think, “At least the system works.” Our government showed accountability – even though it was widely limited in its scope, there was accountability shown, and that’s a big deal. That kind of thing is important – especially nowadays, where it seems like nobody cares about anything at all.

Were you a fan of the classic ’70s political dramas like All the President’s Men? Yeah, for sure. I don’t think we make those kinds of movies much anymore. They’re very much a way to get information to the people. They’re kind of a lost art – people get their entertainment in a very different way now. I like being a part of something that has a story to tell. Those are in short supply these days.

Let’s talk about Lucy in the Sky – you play an astronaut

It’s a very interesting story. It’s loosely based on a story that was in the news, but it’s a little more philosophical than that. It’s about what happens when our perspective is so wildly changed, and there’s nobody we can really talk to about it. Astronauts have a real hard time coming back to Earth – their perspective on life has shifted so radically, and they’ve seen things that they can’t talk to anyone else about. It’s a very, very small fraternity of people. It’s like soldiers coming back from war, except there are way more soldiers that have experienced that. The amount of people that have gone to space and come back is minute compared to anything else. I knew that with Noah Hawley the story was in the right hands.

Did you get to meet with any actual astronauts? I had met a couple of astronauts. They’re not unlike fighter pilots. They are an interesting group of people, to say the least… They’re sitting on top of a 10-storey bomb, and then they’re thrown into space. The way they’re able to stay calm and collected under pressure is impressive.

Do you think you’ll take on more comedic roles? I like doing comedy. It’s always a nice break. Most of my friends are comedians, and we like to hang out and do fun stuff. I was fortunate enough, early on, to be on a show called 30 Rock and host Saturday Night Live – those two things gave me some pretty solid comedy chops.

You’ve also filmed with Clint Eastwood – that must’ve been an inspiring experience as an actor. He’s an impressive human being, first of all, because he’s almost

90 years old and still making movies! He’s there every day. He’s so committed and dedicated to do good work and tell stories that need to be told. With Richard Jewell, this is really the first time in modern times that you see this sort of rush to judgement – this sense of being convicted in the court of public opinion. “This guy must’ve done it because he just looks the part!” And that’s kind of sad. We see it now more than ever, unfortunately. With things like Twitter, you can be tried, convicted and punished before you even realise you’ve done anything wrong. We’re at a weird point in history right now: we have so much access to information, yet so little ability to tell what of it is real and what of it is fake...

When we discussed #MeToo, you said, “Us men, we have to listen now.” Have you heard anything that’s made you change your point of view? I think it’s not only things that women have said – I think that society is correcting course in a way that’s very positive. There’s a better sense for most people that other perspectives are valid. Just because you think something is good or funny, doesn’t mean it has no value. The thing I really appreciate about all this is that people are taking a moment before they get on their high horse – before saying someone’s right or wrong – to understand the other person’s point of view. Wherever you are on the gender spectrum and whatever race you are, it’s important to understand that other people come at things differently. To disavow that as being not worthy validation is silly, I think.

Does it get harder, or easier, to fall in love? I think that’s specific to where you are in your life. You can fall in love just as easily at 16 as you can at 70. I think they’re very different types of love obviously; very different perspectives that you develop in life as you get older, but they’re both great! TVS

From colour swaps to the full chop, change up your look with extensions, faux fringes and coloured wefts – then go back to being you! Stylist Franck Provost gives his top five Hollywood hair trends for 2020...

HAIR CONTOURING WHO’S DOING IT?

Kate Middleton, Alison Brie, Jennifer Lopez and Lily James have all embraced this stunning, summery look, sporting lighter tones in their familiar darker hair colour. And why not? If you’re wanting that “I’ve just returned from a month in the Maldives” sunkissed look, then this colouring technique is just for you. Hair contouring’s a type of balayage, using that winning combination of freehand colour application and strategic highlights to subtly alter the appearance of your face shape by accentuating your best features and enhancing your natural skin tone. The locks are transformed from dull to dazzling and has a beautiful sunbathed effect, just like you’ve been holidaying by the beach. No wonder half of Hollywood just loves this look!

THE BOB

WHO’S DOING IT?

Where do we start? Kaia Gerber, Kristen Bell and Lucy Liu have gone for the chop, sporting those sleek, chin-grazing cuts that ooze elegance and style. Karlie Kloss, January Jones and Chrissy Teigen opted for more textured, wavy versions. Then Selena Gomez traded Kaia Gerber

her long tresses for a classic, rounded bob with strongly curled unde ends. There’ so much you can do with a bob, little wonder it consistently tops the hair trend list.

Lily James Julia Roberts

THE FRINGE

WHO’S DOING IT?

There’s the real-deal celebs who have taken the genuine plunge with a fringe, including Hilary Duff’s enviable ’70s-style, centre-part long curtains, which match perfectly with her boho look, as well as Sarah Hyland and her cute ’90s throwback, eye-skimming wispy fringe. Other Hollywood hotties have experimented with faux fringes on Instagram before they take the plunge for real, including Gwen Stefani, Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian and Bella Hadid. Zoë Kravitz

allows you to play with your natural texture, particularly if you’re a curly girl. Or you can add beachy textured waves for a French-inspired modern look.

Hilary Duff

THE LONGLAYERED LOB WHO’S DOING IT?

The internet nearly broke when everyone’s fave celeb Julia Roberts swapped her signature long, wavy mane for a more manageable layered lob. Olivia Culpo and Brie Larson also debuted their luscious lobs recently on Insta. Keeping the layers long gives your hair more movement and

THE SHORT CROP WHO’S DOING IT?

Evangeline Lilly drove her fans wild when she took hair matters into her own hands and shaved her hair into a cool buzzcut last month. Extreme? Yes! But whether it’s a pixie crop just like Zoë Kravitz and Tallulah Willis sport, or a short cut with length on top à la Rita Ora and Jesinta Franklin, cropped locks are on trend. Ashley Benson’s ’80s short hair even has its own nickname – The Bobson. Maybe it’ll become the new “Pob” of 2020 (Posh’s old look) or even the noughties version of the “Jennifer” from Friends. TVS

The self-made billionaire has a head for business and healthy figures all round! Go Kylie! Make-up may be more her claim to fame than the art of movement, but since motherhood, Kylie Jenner’s given her sisters a run for their money in the fitness stakes. Working out may not have been her thing in the past, but the cosmetics mogul now loves a vigorous routine to help her stay in tip-top shape, with a primary focus centring on her abdominals. She’s also a firm believer in healthy eating and drinks huge amounts of water. Interval training is a staple in her routine, with her workouts including a lot of weights, cardio, squats and push-ups. To warm up, she completes a 15-to-20-minute cardio session, either on the elliptical trainer or the treadmill. Take Kylie’s lead by working at an intensity of about 60 per cent, where you can just hold a light conversation. Then begin the following workout:

Squats

While maintaining a neutral spine, sit your bodyweight down into a squat position until your tailbone drops lower than your knees. Ensure there’s no excessive forward flexion of the torso. Technique tip: the distance your knees travel forward during a squat will be different for each person depending on their limb length. Maintaining a neutral spine and a full range of movement is your priority.

Biceps Curl to Shoulder Press

Holding a pair of dumbbells beside your thighs, curl the weights to the shoulder to activate biceps, then continue into a shoulder press. Repeat the reverse pattern on the downward phase. Be sure not to swing through the arms as you lift and lower the weights.

Lunges

Starting with your feet shoulder width apart and your hands beside your body, take a step forward, lowering your knee to about 3cm off the floor, while raising your arms overhead. Repeat, alternating which leg steps forward. 36

Plank Balance with Hamstring Curl

When holding the plank position, ensure that the arms are in a vertical position, with the hands directly under the shoulders. While maintaining this position, curl your heel into your butt while keeping your knees at the same height and ensuring there’s no rotation or movement through the pelvis or torso.

Sit-ups

Lay on your back with arms reaching up overhead and your knees bent. While you crunch your torso up, reach towards the feet in a circular motion as you sit yourself all the way up. Keep your spine slightly rounded throughout the movement.

Push-ups

Push-ups isolate, strengthen and build muscles in your upper body, particularly your pectorals, triceps and shoulders. Start in a plank position up on your hands and feet. Lower your body to the floor, bending at the elbows until your face is almost touching the floor, then push up to the starting position and repeat. Before the workout, have a stopwatch or clock close by. You will perform each exercise for 45 seconds, followed with 15 seconds to change to the next exercise. This will take five minutes. Next, have a one-minute break and repeat the circuit through for five rounds. Once you’ve finished the five rounds, you’ve done a 30-minute workout! TVS

No wonder our favourite A-listers love to take time off to relax in this paradise! We’ve done our research (while looking for flights and accommodation deals in the process) and have found the best places to unwind on your trip to the Maldives! Muso Guy Sebastian and his wife Jules escaped to the Maldives with their kids in a quest for serious downtime in 2016, staying at the idyllic Club Med Kani. They spent a lot of their trip being at one with the ocean, asailing, surfing, snorkelling – and eating. Yep, there were romantic dinners for the lovebirds, and entertaining shows packed with singing and dancing (of course, Guy took the stage to sing a number or two – be rude not to, surely)!

Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio is a frequent guest at the Maldives – you might as well call her a resident! The Brazilian beauty indulged at the Shangri-La Vilingini Resort & Spa two years ago, and recently went back back with her gal pals Serena Williams and Jessica Steindorff to live it up the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi luxury resort. While this particular hotspot could break the bank, it’s undeniably an amazing place to relax on a special occasion. Australian model and beauty queen Jennifer Hawkins stayed with her hubby Jake Wall at the Per Aquum Huvafen Fushi Maldives – a half-hour speedboat jopyride from the capital of Male – enjoying their tropical getaway in privacy. The luxurious resort features overwater and private bungalows with private pools, sundecks and underwater body treatment rooms to fully unwind. Socialite, media personality and now entrepreneur Lara

Worthington (or as we best know her, Lara Bingle) and her Avatar star husband Sam Worthington (right) have declared the Maldives their favourite travel destination, citing that there’s simply nothing like the feeling of having an ocean all to yourself. It’s not uncommon for soaps to regularly update their full cast photos and usually the whole thing passes by with little fanfare. However, a recent Days of Our Lives cast photo session has whipped up a flurry of speculation and mystery. Featured in the image is former The Young and the Restless star Emily O’Brien (left; ex-Jana Fisher), not presently announced as a castmember, let alone appearing on screens. It looks as though Emily has joined the Salem scene but details of her alter ego remain under wraps. Many fans and insiders are speculating that Emily may be playing a recast version of Greta Von Amberg, the heiress daughter of the dastardly Princess Gina, the late, genuine royal that is, not the brainwashed, reincarnated version currently inhabiting Hope’s body. Emily’s resemblance to Greta’s former portrayer hasn’t gone unnoticed; nor has the fact that Hope-as-Gina is again roaming around town. Given that the last time Greta was in Salem in the early 2000s, she was searching for her biological father and thought he was Gina’s old lover John, maybe Days plans to revisit that story to tie up the loose end of her daddy’s true identity, something never really explained more than a decade ago. Crafting the masterpiece, Gina has been careful to ensure every single detail is accurate, musing cryptically that people will be shocked to see it... Putting the finishing touches to the artwork, Gina (Kristian Alfonso) finally shows it to Stefano – who now looks like Kayla’s (Mary Beth Evans) ex-husband, Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols)! labbergasted to have been named as the sole beneficiary in Katherine’s revised, multi-billion-dollar will, Cane has spent the last few weeks struggling to get his head around why the will was altered and why she would want him as her heir. He’s also been fighting against a disinherited Devon’s accusations that Cane is the mastermind of the whole plot because he has a vendetta to hurt him. Amid all of the acrimony and

the unanswered questions, Jill has suspected that something sinister was indeed going on, and finally concluded that her con artist husband, and Cane’s father, Colin Atkinson, was behind the chaos... Jill’s (Jess Walton) suspicions were proved correct when Colin (Tristan Rogers) confessed he was actually behind the new will surfacing, however, Cane (Daniel Goddard) scoffed at his father’s contention that

the will was legitimate and he was righting a wrong by ensuring Cane received his inheritance. Sure enough, Colin finally confessed that he had orchestrated the whole scenario so he could steal Katherine’s fortune and hide it away! Fed up with Colin, Cane and Jill had him arrested, outraged when he tried implicating Cane in the fraudulent scheme. Back in Genoa City, Cane is exasperated when Devon (Bryton James) accuses him of stealing from him and threatens to have him jailed alongside Colin! Swearing his innocence, Cane pledges that he would never hurt Devon – or disrespect Katherine and her memory. However, Devon is unmoved

and accuses Amanda (Mishael Morgan) of being in cahoots with Cane. The accusation leads to a shouting match as Elena (Brytni Sarpy) believes Amanda is a gold-digger – until Cane bellows at everyone to shut up. Believing there’s no easy solution to the matter, Cane says blaming each other for what’s gone on won’t help. He announces he’s made a decision. He’s going to leave Genoa City to track down the missing money that his father has hidden, and when he finds it, he’s going to return it to whomever Katherine wanted to have it, and only then will the torrid matter finally be resolved. Star letter

DRAMA I was so happy to read in TV SOAP that Days of Our Lives had been renewed! That’s the best news! I just can’t imagine not watching the show – after 54 years, it’s become part of my everyday routine! I just hope Channel Nine doesn’t decide to drop it again, because not all of us can afford Foxtel. Keep up the good work; The author of the Star letter will win this great pack from I’d love to see STAEDTLER, valued at interviews with the stars behind hope and Marlena. W. Day Punchbowl, NSW

I’ve had enough of Brooke and ridge! How many times can they break up and make up? This storyline is so repetitive, it’s time the writers of B&B killed it for good. I loved the couple in the early years, but the magic chemistry between the actors just isn’t there anymore. Enough already! It’s high time to move on to a different couple!

I’ve been reading TV SOAP for years and enjoy your coverage of Australian shows. I’d love to see more stories on the hit reality programs, such as Married at First Sight and The Bachelor.
