INVITING US INTO HER SEVEN-STOREY HONG KONG TOWNHOUSE, BAG DESIGNER

FIONA KOTUR

REVEALS HER MOTHER’S ROYAL CONNECTIONS AND THE RED-CARPET INSPIRATION BEHIND HER LABEL

that her creations get out more than she does. It’s not far from the truth. Her bags – sometimes embroidered, sometimes bejewelled and always gorgeous – are a redcarpet staple, and she counts the Duchess of Sussex, Princess Eugenie, Princess MetteMarit of Norway, Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger, Jennifer Lopez and Priyanka Chopra among her royal and A-list fans.

‘My husband said: “There might be an opportunity in Hong Kong.” “Great,” I said. “It will be an adventure”’

s

She clearly has a unique talent for design that extends to her home, as is evident when she invites us into her light-filled seven-storey townhouse in Hong Kong – two buildings she revamped to make one house in an energetic and up-and-coming part of the vibrant city. “This was originally two houses divided into small apartments. We bought them in 2011,” Fiona explains. Now it’s been cleverly transformed into a stylish family home where she’s raising her four lively sons, Rex, James, George and Wyatt. And while

there’s nothing delicate or precious about the robust terrazzo floors, sleek tile work or midcentury modern and pop art furniture, it’s all softened by rich Moroccan carpets and judicious use of fabrics such as lush velvets. The pièce de résistance? A spectacular view of the Hong Kong skyline from the rooftop terrace.

FASHION IN THE FAMILY Fiona grew up in an arty, fashion-savvy household in New York. Her British mother is Sheila Camera Kotur, a painter, fashion illustrator and interior decorator based in Manhattan, who worked for Christian Dior and designed for the Queen and Princess Anne in the 1960s. Her sister Alexandra, meanwhile, is a fashion journalist, international tastemaker, former style director of US Vogue and creative director at Town & Country magazine. “My mother is the most stylish woman I know. Nobody knows how to mix things like she does. She can combine a classic Chanel piece with some audacious accessory and, on her, it just works. You have to be confident, you have to dare to be yourself,” says Fiona, who credits her passion for accessories to her talented mum’s almost ceremonial way of taking care of her shoes, jewellery and bags. “My mother designed for [British fabric maker and fashion house] Horrockses and, one day, the Queen wrote to the company saying she wanted to meet her. Princess Anne was aware of my mother’s designs for a younger generation like hers. I guess she couldn’t find dresses she liked and that’s how it all started. “Later, she went on to design for the Queen herself for her more informal outings. She still has fond memories of them both. They had great mutual respect for each other. She still has all the newspaper clippings from those days, and she’ll say to me: ‘Look, here I am in the royal box at the Olympics in 1962, the year I designed

the British Olympic uniforms… and look, here’s Elizabeth Taylor!’ And then one day she decided to set up her own company and she went to New York, met my father and stayed. “When my sister and I were little, she illustrated fashion magazines and later she turned her hand to interior design, which is what she still does now. She has a few, very select clients.”

A BRILLIANT CAREER After graduating from Wellesley College in Massachusetts with a triple major in art history, studio art and English, Fiona set out in her intrepid mother’s footsteps, initially working her way through the ranks at companies such as Estée Lauder and Swarovski in London. “Then, one day I realised I just had to get back to New York. After 14 job interviews, Ralph Lauren finally hired me to work in the accessories division. We were a wonderful team and together we designed the first Ricky – the iconic house bag named after Ralph’s wife. I still have the prototype. After that, the president of Gap hired me to work on the creation of Old Navy.” But it wasn’t all work and no play and, while marriage was far from her thoughts, events took a happy turn when she was invited to a Christmas party organised by some friends of the family – and there met her future husband, financier Todd Marin. “The host happened to be Todd’s former

boss and he wanted to cheer him up a bit, because he was working too hard. He made sure my sister and I came to the party. And I saw him and I thought to myself: ‘Mmm!’ And then I heard him laugh at some anecdote that my father was telling him about me and I thought: ‘And he has a sense of humour.’ “That very night he invited me to dinner. We had sushi. And the rest is history.” But it was a history that was destined to unfold a world away, in distant Hong Kong. It was 2002 when a new chapter opened for Fiona, her nowhusband Todd and their two young boys. “Todd was working at JP Morgan. Rex, our eldest, was just one year old while James was a newborn baby. We’d just bought a house and I had a good position at Old Navy. Then one afternoon, Todd said out of the blue: ‘There might be an opportunity for me in Hong Kong.’ “‘Great,’ I replied. ‘It will be an adventure. Let’s try it for two years.’ The conversation lasted exactly one minute and the next day Todd said: ‘Remember that chat we had about Hong Kong? Well, the job’s mine.’ And that was 18 years ago.”

s

INFLUENTIAL FRIENDS But even as she and her family were settling into life in Asia, New York continued to beckon. It was 2003 and her friend Tory Burch asked her for help launching her firm – now a global fashion and lifestyle brand. They’d worked together at Ralph Lauren and Fiona was thrilled to come on board as a founding partner.

‘It’s really hard to launch a brand but it’s arder still to maintain the momentum’

Fiona founded her business in 2004 having spotted a gap in the market. “ T h e re w e re n ’t really any great e v e n i n g c l u t c h e s , ” she says

11

“Tory’s perfect for her brand. She’s always had such a clear vision. She doesn’t waste time. She was already known in certain circles in New York for her style and charitable work. She understands public relations, the magazines adored her and she agreed to be the face of her own brand. Which is very difficult and not everyone is up to the task.”

12

ACCIDENTAL DISCOVERY Those were exciting days as Fiona rolled up her sleeves to get the start-up on a firm footing. She used her contacts in factories, knocked on all the right doors and, more importantly, got them to open. Today the Tory Burch brand is worth billions of dollars. “I admire and respect Tory. She’s really smart. It’s really hard to launch a brand but it’s harder still to maintain the momentum. But I was living in Hong Kong and it was becoming impossible for me to be coming and going all the time. And that was when I started my own label – which came about by accident.” While sourcing materials for Tory, she’d stumbled across a warehouse of brocade remnants, vintage treasures crying out to see the light of day – or at least the bright lights of celebrity events. Fiona launched the Kotur brand with a range of limited-edition, numbered vintage brocade clutches to benefit Operation Smile. New York’s

Fiona with twins George and Wyatt and eldest son Rex. She wanted a home in the centre of Hong Kong so her children could be immersed in the local culture and learn to speak Mandarin

Bergdorf Goodman and London’s Browns took notice, as did a slew of glossy fashion mags. “It was 2004 and there weren’t really any great evening clutches on the market.” Interest from fashion’s biggest names poured in and collaborations followed with Carolina Herrera, Swarovski and J Crew. From the Golden Globes to the Met Gala, stars from Adele to Jennifer Lopez and Renée Zellweger proudly sported their Kotur clutches. And hot on their heels came Fiona’s line in shoes, including femme-fatale gold-leaf snakeskin sandals and sleek suede boots. These days, Fiona remains busy as both a designer and busy mum. So what’s next? Rex, 18, is about to go to university, while James, 17, is studying at a private school in California. Football-mad twins George and Wyatt, 12, are now getting old enough to fend for themselves – so it’s back to the workshop for Fiona. “I am now designing home accessories and also I’m working on an idea for mobile phones that I’m really excited about,” she says – and, as she smiles, one can’t help imagining that she’ll be fielding calls from her H celebrity fans any day now. was just such good fun.” Meeting Teddy, Ben’s six-year-old son from a previous relationship, also cemented Sarah-Jane’s feelings. “I really knew I was in love when I was introduced to Teddy and I saw how Ben is with him. They have got such a special bond, they are best mates; Ben is such a great dad and Teddy is such an incredible kid.” Teddy, too, was instantly taken with the new woman in his dad’s life. After first meeting SarahJane during a big group outing to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park over Christmas 2018, they hit it off immediately. “I had never been in a position where I was about to meet a boyfriend’s child so I wanted to be very careful about it. But as Teddy left, he whispered in my ear: ‘I love you more than Lego.’” Ben adds: “He fell in love with her quicker than I did. Instantly.” Four months later, the couple moved into their first home together, in south-east London, and soon Ben’s thoughts turned to marriage. He began looking into engagement rings, settling on a stunning sapphire central stone on a gold band. But before Ben could pop the question, the couple learnt that Sarah-Jane was pregnant and expecting their first child at the end of June 2020.

‘We are going to have the baby first, then figure the wedding out’

They had discussed having children early on in their relationship, a topic which Ben says came about organically. “Because I had Teddy the conversation was already open earlier than it would have been. We both knew we were in the same boat in terms of wanting another child.” For her part, Sarah-Jane knew that she wanted Ben to be the father of her children. “I have been very open in the past about not wanting to have children on my own; I only wanted to have them with someone, but I had not met that person. It wasn’t until I met Ben that I thought he was completely the person I want to have children with. It was an absolute no-brainer.”

BABY STEPS Due to their ages – Sarah-Jane is 41 and Ben is 40 – they gave themselves a year to try for a baby. But they conceived immediately, finding out the happy news after taking a test at home at the end of October. Keen to wait for a healthy 12-week scan before they told Teddy, they gave him a very special gift when he joined them on Boxing Day. “We opened all his Christmas presents and the last was a ‘big brother’ T-shirt,” Ben says. Sarah-Jane remembers: “Teddy said: ‘I

can’t believe I am going to be a big brother!’ He is really excited.” Ben had also decided to pop the question just before Christmas, planning an intimate dinner date at Berners Tavern, the London restaurant where he had first spied Sarah-Jane on the night they met. But his fiancée-to-be threw a few obstacles in his way: first she needed to drop off presents for her godson – Natalie Pinkham’s son Wilf – and attend TV presenter Piers Morgan’s Christmas party on the way to dinner. “Because I knew this was going to happen, I was a little bit on edge when we got to Piers’s party,” Ben recalls. “I just wanted to be proposing and I was in this room with Gary Lineker, James Blunt and Holly Willoughby… it was very surreal.” Eventually they drove to the restaurant, with Ben persuading an unwitting Sarah-Jane to park the car near the very place they first met. “I asked for a selfie, which is very unlike me, but that was my excuse to get her on the spot. She attempted to walk off but I called her back and she turned round and there I was in the street, holding the ring box – and everyone was looking at me.” Sarah-Jane adds: “As I turned round, he was opening the box and I thought: ‘What is he doing down there?’ Then I finally twigged. I just burst into tears and so did he.” WEDDING PLANS The wedding will take place after their baby is born. “We are going to have the baby first, then figure the wedding out,” says Sarah-Jane. “Our friends who have had babies have told us not to rush because you don’t know how you will feel about everything once the baby comes.” For now, they are concentrating on the pregnancy and sharing their happy news with friends; Autumn was “thrilled and over the moon” to hear of their double joy. And having so far avoided morning sickness and cravings, Sarah-Jane recently told her bosses at Sky News, who were “brilliant”. “They said it would be another addition to the Sky family and were really excited. I am still figuring out when I’m going to leave” – SarahJane also has her own weekday show on Sky, The Sarah-Jane Mee Show – “but I will probably go at the start of June, have at least six months off and maybe go back in the new year. I love my job and I think I’d miss it, but everyone says: ‘You say that now; once the baby comes, that’s your new little world.’” Truly, the couple couldn’t be happier. “There was a point when I thought this was never going to happen,” Sarah-Jane tells hello!. “I was quite happy doing what I was doing – I have got an amazing job, an amazing set of friends and I thought: ‘If this is my lot, I am happy with it.’ And Ben tells me he felt the same. “But there is no one else I would rather spend time with. It’s so nice to rush home from work because you want to get home to see someone, and I have never felt that. It’s amazing. We are best friends… and H everything else.”

THE WORLD SAYS HELLO TO 2020 The new decade began with a big bang as fireworks lit up the skies around the world at the start of 2020. Sydney, Australia, was one of the first big cities to ring in the new year with a spectacular display in front of the iconic Harbour Bridge. Back in the UK, more than 100,000 revellers gathered in the capital by the London Eye on the Thames as fireworks provided a breath-taking visual spectacle to a soundtrack including songs by Stormzy and Bastille. Across the pond in New York’s Times Square, thousands of revellers were showered with confetti at the stroke of midnight. Meanwhile, celebrations in Paris saw a series of illuminations projected onto the Arc de Triomphe in the French capital and a typically lavish display of fireworks.

“Remember no is not an answer. It’s an opportunity,” she said. The gala is the jewel in the crown of the 12-day festival, which screens more than 200 films from more than 60 countries. Charlize Theron picked up the International Star Actress Award for her role in Bombshell, and Britain’s Cynthia Erivo won the Breakthrough Performance Award for her portrayal of American political activist Harriet Tubman in Harriet. As well as a cute jacket by British brand Boden, the little boy wears a tiny pair of Ugg boots given to his parents in Sydney by Australian Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove just hours after they announced Meghan’s pregnancy in October 2018. And his grey Cocobear merino wool hat, made by the New Zealand social enterprise Make Give Live, was given to the royal couple days later by a well-wisher who thought they would appreciate the brand’s focus on tackling isolation and mental health problems. Meghan, 38, has since ordered the woolly hat in the next two sizes. It will be made by the project’s community knitting groups, which have been inundated with requests for hats like Archie’s. “The orders are just flying in like crazy,” says Claire Conza, who co-founded the company three years ago – showing how the Sussexes’ pulling power is as strong as ever. Boden also reported that the Sprout dog cord jacket worn by Archie had sold out. hello! has been given permission to reproduce some of the amazing images the royal couple have shared on their @SussexRoyal account over the past year, which have helped them to amass such a huge and loyal following. As well as shining a light on important global issues, the couple have shared pictures of key moments in their lives, including Archie’s first meeting with his great-grandmother the Queen.

Harry and Meghan launched their Instagram account last April with several photos, including this snap of the couple meeting crowds on a walkabout in Sussex

It already has four directors besides the Duke and Duchess, including the broadcaster Kirsty Young, banker Steven Cooper, business leader Karen Blackett and entrepreneur and philanthropist Stefan Allesch-Taylor. And ahead of 2020 an application to trademark the name Sussex Royal was published by the UK Intellectual Property Office. The application will prevent others using the name on more than 100 goods and services and is the same trademark cover sought by The Royal Foundation in 2012 when the Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband the Duke and Prince Harry as a principal patron. Harry and Meghan will also be looking forward to celebrating Archie’s first birthday on 6 May; they may even take him to watch his first Invictus Games, when the tournament for wounded, injured and sick veterans takes place in The Hague in the Netherlands that month. The Duke is also continuing to work on a documentary series on mental health with Oprah Winfrey; the US TV host is a close friend of the couple and attended their wedding in May 2018. And as president and vice president of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, Harry and the Duchess are likely to be involved in events around this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda – a country to which Meghan made a charity visit with World Vision in 2016. Harry, as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador, is likely to attend the June summit, where his father the Prince of Wales – the future head of the organisation – will represent the Queen. Royal sources have previously revealed how the royal couple were considering spending longer living and working abroad, and the Duke has made no secret of his desire to spend more time in Africa. But he appeared to rule out a move to Cape Town in an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby in October.

Other memories of last year shared by the couple include their appearance at a baseball game in London to promote the Invictus Games (above), and Harry’s visit to a de-mining site in Angola (below) during their tour of Africa. The couple frequently highlight inspirational causes on Instagram, including WellChild, whose awards they attended last year and in 2018 (below left)

“I don’t know where we could live in Africa at the moment,” he said. “We’ve just come from Cape Town. That would be an amazing place to be able to base ourselves. But with all the problems going on there… I don’t see how we’d be able to make as big a difference as we want to.” But Harry added: “The rest of our lives, our life’s work will be predominantly focused on Africa, on conservation. “There are 19 Commonwealth countries across this continent so there’s a lot to be done, but there’s also huge potential.”

Introducing baby Archie to Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a highlight in Cape Town last September. “Archie loved meeting you” the couple posted

A FRESH START After a year which saw both Harry and Meghan speak about their struggle with life in the spotlight, they are clearly determined to get things off to a positive start, announcing on New Year’s Day that their @SussexRoyal Instagram will promote a different inspirational account each month this year. “For 2020 we will be continuing our tradition of highlighting accounts that inspire, and that remind us of all the good that is happening in the world,” they said. January’s pick is the Good News Movement, which the Duke and Duchess explain, “celebrates acts of kindness and good news in our global community”. As they return to royal duties later this month, Harr y and Meghan will be rested, re-energised and ready for another year of adventures representing the Queen and supporting the causes they are so passionate about. Then I looked over to the side and that’s when I realised Prince Harry was standing there,” says Asymina, a producer for CTV News. “I kept looking back and forth like: ‘Is this actually happening?’ The only

MOVING FORWARD Royal sources have been quick to dismiss talk of a regency following speculation that Charles could step up when the Queen turns 95 next year – the age at which the Duke of Edinburgh announced his retirement from public life. Despite this, it is clear the Prince is increasingly shaping the future of the monarchy in his vision. His wish for a more streamlined royal family could be seen during the walk to church on Christmas Day, when William and George were by his side, along with the Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte, four. “The monarchy is the Queen, Charles, Camilla, William, Kate and then George coming along in the fullness of time,” says royal biographer Penny Junor. “The monarchy has long been criticised for being top heavy and too expensive,” she adds. “I think this is the opportunity in this transitional time, not that we are quite there yet, to restate what monarchy is all about.

royal family’s hardest-working member. At the age of 71, Prince Charles notched up an impressive 521 official engagements at home and abroad in 2019 and his hectic schedule looks set to continue as he takes on more responsibility from his mother the Queen. And Her Majesty couldn’t have looked happier as she joined Charles and the next two generations of monarchs – the Duke of Cambridge, 37, and his six-year-old son Prince George – for an official photo. Released to mark the start of the 2020s, the family portrait was taken in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace before Christmas. It shows the Queen smiling broadly as she stands alongside Prince William and George, who wears tartan trousers and a piped piqué Rachel Riley shirt. Proud Charles, meanwhile, rests a loving hand on his grandson’s shoulder. Taken by Ranald Mackechnie, the photo, which comes hot on the heels of an image of the sovereign and the three future Kings making a Christmas pudding

together, shows that at the start of 2020, the family is firmly focused on the future.

NO TIME TO STOP As well as this, Charles has been showing the many facets to his public and private life. Last year saw him carrying out his official duties, greeting people from all walks of life and in all circumstances, from disaster to celebration; meeting the stars who support his many charitable ventures; dressed in uniform for occasions of state and maintaining

his links with the armed forces; as a family man with his wife the Duchess of Cornwall, his children and grandchildren; and showing his fun side, often while with a glass in hand or meeting curious animals on overseas tours. “He’s a busy man,” a royal source tells hello!. “Between overseas travel, Remembrance events, state openings and representing the Queen in a number of her events and patronages, he’s doing a huge amount, as the number of engagements bears out.” Penny says she has “never known anyone work so

HOME AND AWAY Last year, Charles marked his 50th anniversary as both the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cornwall and spent time in both areas. He travelled throughout the UK, visiting Scotland, Northern Ireland, Cumbria and Yorkshire, where he showed his support for people affected by November’s flooding. The year was also one of the Prince’s busiest years for overseas trips – he visited 15 countries and one British overseas territory – and 2020 will almost certainly be as demanding. As well as the usual routine of spring p g and autumn tours, later this month he will

Perhaps most significantly, in June, Charles will travel to Rwanda for the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the first since he was endorsed by the Queen in 2018 to succeed her as head of the 53-nation body. “He’s passionate about the Commonwealth, as his mother is,” Penny says.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Meanwhile, continuing to take up much of his time are Charles’s own passions, which include supporting young people and improving the built environment. And adding to the work of his Prince’s Foundation is a major new project looking at how the economy can operate in favour of people and the planet while contributing to growth and prosperity. Backed by the World Economic Forum, the Sustainable Markets Council was launched in September and will feature heavily in Charles’s workload in 2020. 2020 This year should also see The Prince’s Trust hit its t arget of helping one million yo ung people since its launch in n 1976. ROM MILESTONE BIRTHDAYS TO WORLDWIDE CELEBRATIONS

THE ROYAL CALENDAR OF 2020

ELLO! PRESENTS THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD anniversary in August. Meanwhile, there will be a big birthday bash when the Princess Royal turns 70 in August, with the Queen honouring her daughter’s tireless service to the crown. Princess Elizabeth celebrates VE With the spectre of Day in 1945 with her family the Jeffrey Epstein George VI, Queen Elizabeth and affair still looming Princess Margaret and Prime Minister Winston Churchill large, the Duke of York’s 60th birthday next month is likely to be a more low-key affair. However, Prince Andrew is expected to carry out an important role this year – he’ll be father of the bride when his elder daughter Princess Beatrice marries businessman Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. The wedding may be a more modest occasion than that of his younger daughter Princess Eugenie, who married at Windsor Castle in October 2018. Here, hello! looks ahead to some of the significant royal events due to take place in 2020…

s

This year will be one of public and private celebrations for the royal family. Top of the agenda is the threeday celebration across the UK to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, with a packed programme featuring street parties, flypasts and buglers playing from the top of the U K ’s f o u r h i g h e s t peaks – Slieve Donard, Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike – to mark the end in Europe of the Second World War. The Queen, no doubt, will relive fond memories of what she calls “one of the most memorable nights of my life”, when she and her sister Princess Margaret left Buckingham Palace and celebrated with the crowds after the end of 60 hostilities was declared on 8 May 1945. The Prince of Wales will also be remembering a happy day – he and the Duchess of Cornwall mark their 15th wedding

Other senior royals – such as the Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte (together, above left, on their way to church at Christmas) – also have plenty to look forward to in the coming 12 months

ROBERT JOBSON, author of Charles: Our Future King I believe 2020 will be a big, ore positive year for the en and the royals. The ily will come together to brate the Princess Royal’s birthday in August, as wedding of Princess Beatrice to well as the w businessman Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. ding will see the Duke of York The wedd visible as fatther of the bride, but I can’t see ng a public royal role with the him playin Epstein scan ndal still hanging over him. The Que een will continue to carry out her duties, butt the Prince of Wales will take on the bulk o of major overseas visits on her behalf, including having a central role at the Common wealth Heads of Government n Rwanda. He will probably tour Meeting in another Affrican country, too. I belieeve the Duke and Duchess of Cambrid ge’s position will continue to evolve, with them resembling more of a new-look Charles and Diana in their hugely ul early days on the world stage, successfu becoming g a major force in the UK’s softpower dipllomacy. The Duk ke and Duchess of Sussex will push their own agenda and charity continue to p work through h their new Sussex Foundation. I would expectt them to spend more time in the be make an official visit to Can US and mayb I would no ot be all surprised if there were or two pregn nancies, too, perhaps from Pri Eugenie an nd her husband Jack Brooks and possiblyy even another from star coupl Harry and M Meghan.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s birthday – 9 January Kate turns 38 at the start of another big year for her and her family, including her brother James Middleton’s wedding to Alizée Thévenet. The Countess of Wessex’s birthday – 20 January Sophie will celebrate her 55th birthday with her husband the Earl and their children Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and Viscount Severn, 12.

V

Bafta Film Awards – 2 February As president of Bafta, the Duke of Cambridge is expected to be at the starstudded evening next month. Royal watchers will be hoping Kate will be by Prince William’s side once more – she has attended every year since 2017. Spring celebrations include Easter services for the Queen and her family, including (from left) Autumn Phillips, the Duke of Sussex, Zara and Mike Tindall, Kate and William and the Duke of York. There will also be flypasts (below) for VE Day celebrations

Easter Sunday – 12 April Every year the royal family gather in Windsor to mark Easter at St George’s Chapel. The Queen’s birthday – 21 April In a year that sees her mark 68 years as monarch, the Queen will celebrate her 94th birthday in her usual quiet fashion – although traditional artillery salutes will make enough noise instead. Prince Louis’s birthday – 23 April Two days after his great-grandmother’s birthday, William and Kate’s youngest child turns two… Princess Charlotte’s birthday – 2 May … and his big sister Charlotte has her own celebration for her fifth birthday soon after… Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor’s y – 6 May y birthday … while the Duke and Duchess of Su ussex’s son turns one the following week. and senior members of her family will be at the forefront in the UK as three days of events across the world commemorate the historic moment. Her Majesty will lead members of the armed forces and the tens of thousands of people taking part in a host of activities over a special bank holiday weekend (the Spring Bank Holiday has been moved from a Monday to Friday 8 May to mark VE Day), from services of commemoration to thousands of pipers playing Battle’s O’er. Events include pubs across the UK asking their customers to raise a glass at 3pm on 8 May, while bells in cathedrals, churches and other locations will sound at 7pm in a joyful Ringing Out For Peace. Invictus Games – 9-16 May Prince Harry will once again be centre stage when the Invictus Games, which he established, takes place at The Hague, The Netherlands. The event has a special place in his heart - as it it where he first stepped out with Meghan when the event was held in Toronto in 2017.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were then – make their first public appearance together at the Toronto Invictus Games in 2017

international showjumping, dressage, driving and endurance displays, the show is one of the Queen’s favourite events of the year and she’s often accompanied by members of her family. Last year saw Harry by her side – the new dad stepping out a few days after the birth of Archie – as well as her husband the Duke of Edinburgh, who regularly competed in the event’s International Driving Grand Prix. The Queen herself won the Pony and Dogcart class at the first show in 1943 and is said not to have a missed a year since.

s

Polo Season – May-September William and Harry grew up playing this highoctane sport and the Queen has been a regular at polo games since the 1950s. This year’s must-see will be the Cartier Queen’s Cup Tournament at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, which takes place from 19 May to 14 June. The younger generation is also taking to the sport – last year, Meghan took baby Archie on his first outing to cheer on his dad as he went head to head with William in a charity game at Billingbear Polo Club in Wokingham. Kate, meanwhile, had her hands full chasing after toddler Louis and his siblings George and Charlotte.

INGRID SEWARD, editor in chief of Majesty magazine 020 is a decade year for the oyals – the Duke of York is n February and his sister the ncess Royal celebrates her h birthday in August. he Queen enjoys organising decade celebrations for her family, in spite of her advanced years, and I am sure Princess Anne and Prince Andrew will share a celebration at Windsor Castle. This also solves the tricky situation of Andrew being too visible during the ongoing saga with the Jeffrey Epstein case, which I feel will run and run during 2020. However, the wedding of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi is unlikely to be a low-

profile event, whatever the situation, as the York family don’t do things that way. I suspect it will still be at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in the spring or early summer, after the 75th anniversary of VE Day in May. Royal watchers will also be loooking forward to the Sussexes returning to the royal fold revitalised after their extended break. I also predict Meghan will announce she is expecting her second child. Once her family is complete – the Duke has said they intend to have two children – she and Harry can concentrate all their energies on their favourite causes. The health of the Duke of Edinburgh will a large part in how 2020 is formed. No expects a 98-year-old man to live forever, bu would be nice if he were to make it through to 100th year, which starts in June, when h celebrates his 99th birthday.

Louis makes his Trooping the Colour debut (above, in his father the Duke of Cambridge’s arms) with the royal family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace Euro 2020 – 12 June-12 July As president of the Football Association, the Duke of Cambridge will have a visible role at the European Championships, especially as the final will take place at Wembley Stadium in London. England and Wales have already qualified, while Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are in March’s play-offs. Matches will be taking place across Europe, with some in London, Glasgow and Dublin. Don’t be surprised to see William cheering on the players along with children George and Charlotte, who were both spotted in the crowd with their father supporting Aston Villa against Norwich City last year.

66

Trooping the Colour – 13 June The Queen’s annual birthday parade always has a good royal turn-out, with Prince Louis making his debut last June. Royal fans were also delighted to see Meghan return to the spotlight a few weeks after she’d given birth to Archie. A colourful display of military pageantry, the parade features more than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians, and is followed by an RAF flypast that the family traditionally gathers to watch from the Buckingham Palace balcony. Royal Ascot – 16-20 June Seldom happier than when in the company of her beloved horses, the Queen is in her element watching the racing at Ascot. Last year she was seen laughing and smiling broadly as she awarded jockey Frankie Dettori with the Gold Cup. Always a wonderful opportunity to see the royal family out and about in all their finery, Ascot’s greatest moment is undoubtedly Ladies’ Day, which this year takes place on 18 June.

s

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2020 – 22-27 June Two years after he was endorsed as the next head of the Commonwealth, Prince Charles will represent the Queen at the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda. He is likely to be joined by other members of the royal family for the six-day gathering of Commonwealth leaders.

Prince George’s birthday – 22 July The spotlight falls on the Cambridges’ eldest child as he celebrates his seventh birthday. After holding a football-themed party for his big day last year and with the Euros still very much in mind, the beautiful game will surely feature in the fun again.

Tokyo 2020: Olympic Games and Paralympic Games – JulySeptember As an Olympian and president of the British Olympic Association, Princess Anne is likely to attend this year’s Games, which take place 24 July9 August; she attended the Rio de Janeiro event in 2016. There may be a family connection for Anne, too. Her daughter Zara Tindall, who won a silver at the 2012 London Olympics as part of the British Equestrian team, hasn’t ruled out competing in Tokyo, though she said recently that it depended on her horse: “Whether he’s going to be quite ready to go to the next Olympics, I’m not sure.” Meanwhile, Prince Edward, royal patron of the British Paralympic Association, will be in Japan a few weeks later to cheer on Team GB in the Paralympics, which run H 25 August to 6 September. The Championships, Wimbledon – 29 June-12 July A long-time tennis fan and patron of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, Kate is a regular spectator in the royal box, last year attending games including the ladies’ singles final, when she was joined by her sister-in-law Meghan and her sister Pippa Middleton. Her son Prince George is a keen player who last year had a knockabout with his hero Roger Federer. The Swiss player visited the Middletons’ family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, to coach the youngster, saying his technique was “already good”. Roger also attended the wedding of Pippa to James Matthews in May 2017.

ANDREW MORTON, author of Meghan: A Hollywood Princess and Diana, Her True Story This has the otential to be a y-turvy year for the royal family, e lly the Duke and Duchess of Suss Meghan will b n August, so expect an announcement about baby number two. As she worked virtually to the due date with Archie, she and Prince Harry w i l l be em braci ng th eir role as international ambassadors for the Commonwealth. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall celebrating their 15th – crystal – wedding anniversary will be a big highlight of the year, as will the three days in May when the nation celebrates the 75th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War in Europe. There will be street parties and flypasts. For the Queen, it will bring back fond

memories of what she called “one of the most memorable nights” of her life. When Winston Churchill declared the end of hostilities in May 1945, the then Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret were given permission to leave Buckingham Palace and join the happy throng outside the wrought-iron gates. They danced with strangers, joined conga lines and took part in sing-songs, returning to the palace in the early hours. A family celebration will be for the 70th birthday of the Princess Royal, whose hard work and unfussy style has earnt wide respect. Princess Anne’s years of dedication, particularly on behalf of Save the Children, are a reminder of the notion of service and sacrifice at the heart of the modern monarchy. Finally, you just can’t keep the Princess of Wales out of the picture. Not only will series four of The Crown depict courtship and wedding of the Princ Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, Diana: The Musical opens on Broadwa March. Like the royal family, this on will run and run.

PICTURE OF HEALTH Looking toned and in better shape than ever, Melanie, who shot to fame as the Northern lass in the Boddingtons beer adverts in the 1990s before forging a successful presenting career, is an inspiration for a generation herself, although she takes a more pragmatic view of her physical fitness. “My big focus is staying healthy for my kids. I have a son with autism, and I have to stay healthy for him, and stay healthy for my eldest,” she says of her sons Roman, 17, and Valentino, 15, with her first husband, actor Daniel Caltagirone. “I don’t look in the mirror and think: ‘Wow!’” she insists. “I look in the mirror and see my 49-yearold face. return to the small screen but, in August, she will be celebrating turning 50. Not a big fan of parties – “especially if I’m centre of attention” – she plans to head off to somewhere beautiful for her special day, “so I can wake up feeling happy and positive”. And there are lots of positives to growing older, she believes. “I know what I want and what I don’t want, and I’m not scared to say it,” says the former model, who will be welcoming in 2020 by hosting the third TV series of The Great Pottery Throw Down. “It’s about speaking a truth. In your 20s and 30s you’d go: ‘Oh, I’ll do that,’ even if you didn’t want to do it. Whereas now, I don’t feel obliged to do anything I don’t really want to.” The fact that 50 is the new 40 helps. “There are a lot more women who are very visible now at this age

– people who are happy doing what they’re doing, still enjoying their job, and still celebrating the beauty that they are,” she says, citing as examples Demi Moore and Jennifer Aniston.

‘I’ve put a lot of work into finding what makes me happy and keeps me in a happy place’

else. I have an amazing make-up artist and whenever she works with me, I feel good. If I’ve got a really wellfitted dress on and I’m going out, I feel good. I’m healthy and I’m grateful for that.” She practises hot yoga, visits the gym twice a week, meditates daily, doesn’t eat dairy and hasn’t drunk alcohol for the past two and a half years. “It’s really bad for you. Plus, I’m not the sort of person who can have just one glass and leave it – like most people can’t, if they’re honest with themselves. There are no downsides to not drinking. None.” PRIVATE MATTERS While she is open and honest on most subjects, one topic not up for discussion is her love life. “I don’t talk about it out of respect for my kids, and it’s nobody’s business,” she says brusquely of the decision she made six years ago. Married twice – her second marriage, to Jack Cockings in 2013, lasted just seven months – Melanie has also been romantically linked to singer Olly Murs, German professional golfer Martin Kaymer and, last year, to actor, writer and comedian Steve Coogan. How does she feel about the public speculation over her personal life, given she so fiercely protects her privacy? “I find it irritating as usually it’s a load of bulls**t.” She is never, however, tempted to put people right. “I just don’t see the point in rectifying wrongs because in my life with my friends and family, everybody knows exactly what goes on with me. So people who don’t know me, who read [stories] and believe them, how can I care about that? “I have a private life that nobody knows about, and that’s great, and that’s because I don’t talk about it and I’m not out there in places where I know there’s going to be photographers.” Is she happy? “I’ve put a lot of work into finding what makes me ha y and kee s me in

‘I don’t look in the mirror and think: “Wow!” I’m just like everybody else’

‘I know what I want and what I don’t want, and I’m not scared to say it’ a happy place. I’ve found that, for sure.” A big part of what makes her happy is parenting her boys who, despite being teenagers, have not so far caused her any adolescent grief. “I don’t have any dramas. They’re respectful, good company and I’m proud of them. I’m really open about things. I’ve said: ‘There’s nothing that can shock me or make me angry. Just be honest and never lie to me.’ “I tell them if they need me, just ask and years down the line don’t go telling a therapist that I wasn’t available, because I am!” A WAITING GAME Early last year Melanie, who made her presenting debut on Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast, decided not to take on any more presenting work. “I didn’t get offered anything that I could do or wanted to do so, in January, I said: ‘I’m not even going to think about it any more.’” Instead, she launched online magazine Frank for women aged 40plus and enjoyed discovering new skills including writing, editing and designing pages. She was then approached by a producer with whom she had worked previously to host the latest ten-part series of The Great Pottery Throw Down, which has moved to More 4 from BBC2, in which 12 potters are set different challenges each week by two judges. “It sounded like a very non-toxic environment, with nice people and something I might want to do. And it was. It’s been amazing,” she says. Melanie spent two and a half months filming the series in Stoke, travelling up and down the motorway, living in a “pottery bubble”. Made by the same production company behind The Great British Bake Off, it feeds into the nation’s obsession with arts, crafts and cookery. What does she think is behind this fixation? “It’s a rage against being on our screens all the time, and getting back to basics. Quite a few of our contestants came to pottery through stress, and th hat’s because when you’re making something, you’re in the moment m and mindful, so it’s a good th herapy.” Along with her and her co-host Alan Carr’s regular stints o on BBC Radio 2 (they will be sitting g in for Paul O’Grady on Sunday afte ernoons m ffrom this weekend), there’s much for M Melanie to look forward to in 2020. “I’ve been happy and healthy and the kids seem the same,” sh he says. “So hopefully it will be more H o of the same.” INTERVIEW: ROSALIND POWELL PHOTOS: ALAN STRUTT STYLING: KRISHAN PARMAR AT CAROL HAYES MANAGEMENT HAIR & MAKE-UP: SALLY ROWE

GOLD STARS

FA ULOUS AT FIFTY

Superstars of the catwalk, screen and music worlds are among the women celebrating landmark golden birthdays this year. Still hitting career peaks and looking fit and glamorous, it’s hard to believe these women aren’t two decades younger – but along with their beauty they exude a self-confidence born of maturity

NAOMI CAMPBELL For supermodel Naomi, age is just a number. “I’m looking forward to turning 50,” she said last year. As for the celebration in May, she says: “I don’t know what I’ll do. I’m in two minds. I don’t know if I want to be planning my own birthday. It actually sounds cool to say I am going to be 50. Nobody believes me.” Naomi credits her regular self-care regime for her youthful looks: “I take care of myself, eat well, try to balance what I put in my body I stay away from sugar and body, drink lots off water.” The Londonborn star i s also keen to help mentor the new crop of catwalk queens, including Adut Akech and wford’s daughter Kaia Cindy Craw Gerber. “The ey are my babies,” she said last November.

Every bit as striking now as in her supermodel heyday, Claudia, whose 50th is in August, says she exfoliates two to three times a week and enjoys “long walks with the dogs, tennis, yoga or Pilates”. No doubt the country air helps, too – she l i v e s w i t h f i l m d i re c t o r husband Matthew Vaughn and their three children Caspar, Clementine and Cosima in a grade I-listed Tudor home in Suffolk with dogs, cats, sheep and pigs. And for those of us hoping for a sprinkling of Claudia magic on our beauty regimes, she also runs her own cosmetics line.

Despite being one of the world’s most influential women, Queen Rania of Jordan has modest plans for her special day. “I’ve never really been big on birthdays,” she exclusively told HELLO! last year. “Growing up, my birthday fell during summer holidays, when all my schoolfriends were on vacation, so I rarely got to have birthday parties.” If she has one this year, husband King Abdullah II and their c h i l d re n C ro w n P r i n c e Hussein, Prince Hashem and Princesses Salma and Iman will be top of the guest list. “Having my birthday in August now means a greater chance to have all my children back home and what b e tter way to spend the day?” Meanwhile there is no sign of her slowing down in her humanitarian work, including on education and f o r S y r i a n re f u g e e s . “ I t breaks my heart to see that often, many view refugees with a degree of hostility,” she said.

Since retiring from running, the gold-medal-winning Olympian has dedicated her life to mentoring and charity work, speaking out about mental health issues. “I’ve been to the lowest point and to the highest point and everything in between,” she said last year. “It shows we can go through life and have struggles and still actually achieve. when she meets hello! (she gave birth to her second child shortly after our photoshoot in December), she has a warm smile, unassuming manner and an interest in artistic projects that aren’t entirely dictated by profit – including the Boulevard theatre, which she recently opened in London’s Soho. It is the first phase of her master plan for the capital’s once most notorious district. “It is a male-dominated industry, the property industry,” she says as we sit in the Boulevard’s state-of-the-art auditorium. “I think it’s great that we can be seen as equal.” F a w n ’s g r a n d f a t h e r P a u l Raymond was the king of Soho strip clubs and the soft-porn magazine trade for more than 40 years. Fawn, 33, was appointed a director of his company – Soho Estates, one of the UK’s largest family-owned property companies – in 2004 when she was just 18, and inherited 80% of the empire, now worth around £1bn, along with her younger half-sister India Rose when he died in 2008. While she is unclear about the number of properties the company owns – “My grandfather was always quite vague about it all” – she has a very clear vision for this patch of London, which once served as its red-light district.

Her plans include a £40m redevelopment of Walker’s Court, the site of former strip club and Soho institution the Raymond Revuebar, which helped earn Paul Raymond his reputation as a porn baron. How does she feel about the title associated with her grandfather? “It is slightly strange as you never think of your grandfather in that kind of way. He was a family man and we’d just muck about at home. But he was a businessman at heart and did a very good job at judging the market and knowing what people wanted. I don’t have an issue with it. “I’m not ashamed of where our family has come from, or where the wealth has come from. There were strip clubs, like the Revuebar, but he thought of it as performance art, celebrating the female body, rather than trying to exploit anyone.” Is there nothing about it that jars with her? She takes a long pause. “No. No one was forced to do anything. This was a choice, a celebration. It was giving a woman a platform to showcase beauty and that’s how he saw it. I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

‘I wish I’d asked my grandfather more questions. I hear he had to keep the Kray twins on side’

Fawn James, the eldest granddaughter of Soho porn baron Paul Raymond, has inherited much of his fortune and all of his passion for the once notorious London district, which she is now helping to transform

‘I wanted to bring an original piece of our portfolio back as an ode to my grandfather’

The stalls of the new Boulevard theatre can rotate 360 degrees, and the balcony 270 degrees, making it an extremely versatile space. Fawn (below, overlooking Soho’s Walker’s Court) hopes it will be a welcome addition to “one of the most creative square miles” in the world

was then brought up by her stepfather John James – managing director of Soho Estates and whom she calls Dad – and her stepmother Jilly in Surrey, away from the bright lights of the city. “I wish I’d asked my grandfather more questions, or that he’d told me more stories,” says Fawn. “I hear stories from other people about how he had to keep the Kray twins on side – they’d go into the Revuebar along with all the gangsters. But I’d love to know more. “I never saw the businessman, I only saw the family man, and he was hilarious, soft and cuddly with us. He was a joker, a wonderful, wonderful person and always wanted to be around my sister and me. I loved growing up around him.” Paul wanted Fawn to be involved in the company. “He never said: ‘You have to work there,’ and I wasn’t going to,” says Fawn, who studied social anthropology at the University of St Andrews before dabbling in acting, taking classes at Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in the US. “Or at least I didn’t plan to be as involved as I am now.” She eventually decided to give up her dream of acting and work for the company instead. Her husband Nick Lawson, whom she met in 2007 while travelling in Thailand, also works for the family firm, as an investment and development surveyor.

LABOUR OF LOVE The revamped Boulevard theatre, which began as a sister venue to the Raymond

‘My grandfather started as a mindreader on Clacton Pier, so theatre was in his bones’

Fawn takes pride in the new Boulevard theatre, whose bar and restaurant will help fund the in-house productions. It is a fitting homage to her theatreloving grandfather Paul Raymond (left, with his daughter Debbie and Fawn in 1988)

83

Fawn enjoys a mocktail in Boulevard’s bar (above). She and her sister India Rose (together, left) inherited 80% of their grandfather’s fortune in 2008, and the theatre marks the first exciting stage of her Soho revamp of what people want Soho to be like, and a lot of people saying: ‘Oh you’re sanitising Soho.’ But things are a lot more accessible online and with a bit more anonymity,” says Fawn, referring to the sex industry that once flourished in the area. “And if people aren’t going to certain venues or shops, how can that business thrive? “Soho is constantly evolving and changing. Years ago it was a place full of tailors and music shops, and now it’s the restaurant and film postproduction industry. But there’s still an edge to it.” MATRIARCHY IN THE MAKING Fawn’s vision for Soho is “to keep the majority of people happy and keep moving with the times”. But for now she is taking a temporary step back to “enjoy and savour my new baby daughter” as well as her twoyear-old daughter. With the company held partly in trust for the next generation, the future is definitely female. “I’d like my children to do what they want to do, and I’m not going to force them into it. But I’d like them to understand where it’s all come from, and to honour that. My sister has a little girl now, too, so we’re keeping it within the girls H of the family.” INTERVIEW: ROSALIND POWELL PHOTOS: SVEN ARNSTEIN HAIR & MAKE-UP: CLAIRE RAY AT CAROL HAYES MANAGEMENT

Revuebar and in the 1980s hosted the Comic Strip group of comedians – Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Alexei Sayle – has been a tenyear labour of love. “I really want to champion the creative arts in Soho,” says Fawn. “It’s a small theatre space, and theatres traditionally don’t make money, but we’re in a lucky position to be able to give something back. We’re not doing it all for the community, but we have so much stuff around Soho.” It’s also a fitting homage to her heritage. “I wanted to bring an original piece of our portfolio back as an ode to my grandfather. He started as a mind-reader on Clacton Pier, so theatre was in his bones, in his genes.” The redevelopment is part of a plan to keep creative industries, particularly post-production in film, in the area. Soho Estates is currently transforming a block of properties it purchased in 2012 on London’s Charing Cross Road into a 13-storey building, including four basement levels, comprising flats, shops, restaurants and offices. US entertainment company Warner Brothers was one of the first companies to sign up as tenants. There has been criticism over the years that property developers including Soho Estates are stripping Soho, known historically for its sleaze, of its character. “There are a lot of romantic ideals

THE PERFECT A

personal trainer, author and podcaster, Alice Liveing is one of the UK’s biggest voices in health and fitness. The 26-year-old Instagram star, from Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, shot to fame after sharing motivational workouts and healthy meal plans on the social media platform. She now has more than 635,000 followers, has trained celebrities such as Killing Eve star Jodie Comer and TV presenter Maya Jama, written three best-selling recipe books and just launched her third activewear collection with Primark. Here, Alice tells us more about the range, her workout tips and how to conquer gym fear… Alice, this is your third activewear collection for Primark… “I feel so excited, it’s definitely progressed and I’ve had a lot more creative control with this collection. There are recycled fabrics and some recycled water bottles, so it’s really great that we’ve been able to look into sustainability.”

‘Even for me, when I get new gym wear, I’m like: “I want to go to the gym!” An outfit you’re confident in is the perfect motivation’

What’s your favourite piece to wear from the new range? “The grey and lighter grey animal-print set. I love a highwaisted gym legging – they’re really supportive while still offering great movement. “Getting a new outfit that you feel really confident in is the perfect gym motivation. Even for me, when I get new gym wear, I’m like: ‘I want to go to the gym!’”

What encouragement can you give anyone nervous about wanting to join a gym or class? “I think people always focus on going hell for leather in January, maybe going to the gym five times a week without having that long-term sustainability. It’s something I’m trying to get people to be mindful of – that health is for life and not just for January. “Start slow and start small – like once or twice a week – and build up. Also find something you enjoy – you’ll stick to it so much better. Try different things, go to classes, maybe go with a friend and try and find something that you feel you’re really getting the most out of and that makes you feel positive about you and your body.”

88

You’re open about mental health on Instagram and about changing your attitude to food and exercise – for instance your struggles with yo-yo dieting. Have your experiences helped others? “All my highs and lows have been played out publicly online; the flipside is it’s amazing that so many people can relate to my experiences. Even to this day, I get messages. I can look back and see that restricting what I was eating, or working out that much wasn’t the healthiest way to achieve things. I think being honest and transparent will hopefully help others.”

How do you cope if your posts receive any negative comments? “Catch me on a good day and I’d say it really doesn’t phase me. Then there are other times when you’re having a bad day that, no matter how many positive comments there are, that one negative one will just make you feel terrible about yourself. There have been many times when I’ve been in tears. “I do now have really strict rules. There are some things I’ll tolerate, such as constructive criticism done in an appropriate way, but if someone is just being genuinely nasty then I block and remove them as I don’t need that negativity. “Previously, I’d spend days thinking about something someone had said and losing sleep over it and I just thought: ‘Why am I giving power to people that have too much time on their hands to write nasty stuff about me?’ “The other thing – and this is really tricky – is to try not to bite because when someone trolls you, they want a reaction. “It can really hurt and I think we could all do with practising a bit more kindness, especially online.”

What is your exercise routine? “I weight-train four times a week. Each session is different and focuses on four key movement patterns: push movements; pull movements; hiphinge movements, and knee flexion. Those sessions together make up a full body workout. “I start off with ten minutes on the treadmill to raise my heart rate and body temperature and ten minutes of mobility work – dynamic warm-up exercises to improve flexibility and increase my range of motion – before moving on to the weights.” Do you prioritise weight training over cardiovascular exercise? “In my opinion, weight training is key. It’s the best way to improve joint health and movement quality, as well as adding strength. “It also strengthens the body for anything else you want to apply it to – I have clients who love running and do marathons and after adding strength to their bodies with weight training, see benefits. It also bulletproofs your body against injury. “It’s important to note, too, that weight training doesn’t have to mean lifting really heavy weights. It can even be body weight resistance, working against the resistance of your own body.” What kind of exercises do you recommend for an at-home workout? “I recommend sticking to squats, lunges and push-ups with some conditioning work such

as burpees or squat jumps thrown in to get the heart rate up. “You can buy many at-home pieces of equipment, but I suggest starting with resistance bands and kettlebells. “I regularly post fitness workout ideas on my Instagram page so you can head there to see a full library.” What does your diet look like? Do you follow a specific way of eating? “I try to listen to my body and decide – for example, to have a carb-heavy meal because I’ve worked out a lot one day, or have fish another day because I feel like it. “I take probiotic drink Symprove daily to maintain my gut health and supplement my vitamin D between October and March.” How do you maintain your mental health? “Exercise gives me headspace and allows me to decompress. Meditation for me is a long walk.”

The neck is notoriously tricky to treat but one of the first places to age. “The skin on your neck is thinner. There is very little fatty tissue, so the architecture of the neck is much more vulnerable to ageing,” says Dr David Jack, who has created the Morphilo, which combines two treatments: Morpheus8 and Profhilo. THE POWER JAW In 2020 a greater number of women will be looking to achieve a more defined face shape. Aesthetic surgeon and international beauty lecturer Dr Jonquille Chantrey notes that “the jawline was one of the most requested tweakments at my clinic in 2019 and is set to become even more popular as women seek to emulate the likes of Angelina Jolie”. Jonquille uses a cannula (a narrow tube) and needle to administer Juvéderm Volux, a filler designed to restore volume to the lower face. The treatment is attracting both younger and older women and men. “You may have a young patient who is looking for really sleek definition, so with those patients I use a smaller deposit of product. In a patient who may be older, in their 40s and upwards, I would inject further back in order to lift the jaw, rather than into the jowl, which can make it look heavier,” says Jonquille. n PAIN LEVEL: Juvéderm Volux contains an anaesthetic. Jonquille also applies a topical anaesthetic and uses smaller cannulas and needles to minimise any pain. n DOWNTIME: There could be a little bruising, which can be covered with make-up, and a little swelling. Both go down within days. n LASTS: 18-24 months. n COST: From £900. n WHERE: Dr Jonquille Chantrey Expert Aesthetics; visit jonquille.co.uk.

P

ersonalisation is this year’s anti-ageing buzzword. And, according to Dr Mayoni Gooneratne, a leading aesthetics doctor and surgeon, 2020 will be all about sculpting and bolstering skin. “Skin ageing is not really age-related – it’s 87% sun damage-related. And most of this is the sun we are exposed to before the age of 16,” says Dr Mayoni. “Our skin cells begin to switch off and the resultant damaged cells don’t work properly. We start to see pigmentation, fine wrinkles, dull and dry lacklustre skin. Any short, sharp shock we can administer to our skin will wake those cells up.” Here, we take a look at the latest “tweakments” on offer…

Don’t let tiredness and stress sabotage your new year wellbeing programme, says Louise Parker When a client is starting a new series of behavioural changes, I ask them what challenges they think they will face. Age, hormones and a bruised faith in themselves are often their main concerns – and all these challenges we can work around. I rarely hear clients talk about sleep or stress, but when you’re tired, you care less. Nothing fuels my procrastination more than only getting six hours’ sleep. we’re running on empty it’s ‘Make sleep a When a totally normal human response priority and to pull back our efforts, conserve energy and comfort ourselves. you’ll feel as At Louise Parker, we study clients’ results and analyse why if someone some achieve their goals faster. has flicked a The biggest factor is sleep, which why my advice this week can be switch on your isdone lying on your back and not at a rainy boot camp. motivation I think we’ve all got so used to a and hope’ low level of sleep deprivation and anxiety that we’ve almost forgotten how it feels to feel well. But if you make sleep a priority, I promise you’ll feel as if someone has flicked a switch on your motivation and hope. When we sleep soundly, our bodies manage our hormones the way they should do and healthy hormones are the foundation of everything working tickety-boo. Ghrelin is the “hunger hormone”, the one that tells your body when you need to eat.

When we’re tired, we end up with too much ghrelin in our bodies and feel hungry. That’s why we eat leftover fish fingers even if we don’t like them. As for stress, having soaring levels of cortisol in our body makes it harder for our insulin to work properly. Together, these play havoc with mood, motivation and blood sugar regulation – all of which we want balanced to make a lifestyle transformation easier. This new year, don’t let something as free and fabulous as sleep stand between you and your goals. Start with the time you need to wake up and work back eight hours so you know when you need to go to sleep. Then plan your evening so you hit the hay in time. Be realistic and allow for some Netflix or screen time if you’re going to do it anyway, but make sure you plan the time to really unwind. We’ve had a digital detox as part of our Louise Parker Method for as long as I can remember because it works. At 9pm, my phone goes on to airplane mode because it’s time to slow down. I love a hot bath with magnesium salts and lavender and as my body temperature cools, I naturally feel more sleepy. Add comfy bedding, sleepwear and a great book and you’ll feel pampered and primed for great quality sleep. If you can, think: “Routine.” It’s far better to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, than just focus on the hours of sleep you’re getting. Your inner clock will be better regulated and this will help solidify routine – and routines really do help formulate lasting habits.

JASON MANFORD

FUNNY GAMES From stand-up to TV comedy, the star has been making Britain laugh for 20 years, but getting his kids to see the funny side is no joke

H

104

e is one of Britain’s best-loved comics, but Jason Manford’s “dad jokes” are not such a big hit with his children. “My kids are my toughest critics. Whenever I tell them a joke, my daughters roll their eyes at me and say: ‘I can’t believe people pay you for this,’” he tells hello! in this exclusive interview. The stand-up comic, presenter, actor and singer has four daughters including twins and one son, all aged between five and ten – and his brood give Jason plenty of material for his stage routines. Although, to save red faces, he won’t say which child has provided which moment of comedy. “I did stand-up at Latitude festival last year and my wife [Lucy], ex-wife [Catherine] and all my children came. The kids saw me do an hour of stand-up for the first time and they’re in some of the stories. Afterwards they were all like: ‘Was that me, dad?’” he laughs. “I tell them: ‘If you like your nice house and nice holidays, you better keep doing funny things.’” With his children’s teenage years not that far round the corner, Jason doesn’t expect his source material to dry up any time soon. “They’re so competitive ‘My kids are so competitive that when we play musical that when we play musical chairs, I have to film it with chairs, I have to film it my phone and use the slowfunction to prove with my phone and use the motion who sat down last,” he says. But Jason thinks it is slow-motion function to important that children prove who sat down last’ understand the concept of winning and losing. “I’m not one of those parents who says it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, because it does matter. I don’t let the kids win at anything, especially board games.” Jason will explore the idea in First & Last, a new BBC1 Saturday night prime-time gameshow he is hosting that has

DON’T MISS THIS WEEK… TELEVISION WHITE HOUSE FARM Based on real events in August 1985, this six-part drama centres on the notorious White House Farm murders in Essex, in which five members of the same family were killed. Police think it is a murdersuicide by the daughter, Sheila, but suspicion then falls on her brother, Jeremy Bamber. Stars Freddie Fox and Stephen Graham with Cressida Bonas (right). Starts on ITV on 8 January at 9pm.

one simple rule: don’t come first or last in five play-along-athome games. “It celebrates being average, which most of us are,” says Jason. “And I’m the perfect host because I’m always middle of the road – I rarely win anything.” Though Jason’s two-decade-long career has been anything but average. Taking his first tentative steps in stand-up in 1999, Jason has gone on to enjoy sell-out tours, release his own Top Ten album, win celebrity TV talent contest Born to Shine, write an autobiography and present a Sunday morning show on Absolute Radio. He is now touring the country with Curtains, a revival of the Tony Award-winning send-up of backstage murder mysteries. Jason stars as Detective and musical theatre fan Frank Cioffi, alongside seasoned theatre star Carley Stenson and former Strictly Come Dancing champion Oré Oduba. “It’s been incredible to get to play a detective – I love detective stuff like Murder, She Wrote and Columbo. It feels like everything has fallen into place,” he says of starring in the show, which is in London’s West End until 11 January before continuing a nationwide tour until April.

STRIKING A CHORD

The role also gives Jason a chance to showcase his singing talent, something the 38-year-old has been honing from an early age. “When I was growing up, singing was what my family did. I’ve always been surrounded by music. It wasn’t a surprise to my family when I could sing, did an album or did musicals,” Jason says, adding with a laugh: “But it still seems to surprise everyone else.” He has come a long way since he got his big break at the age of 17 while collecting glasses at Manchester’s Buzz Comedy Club. He stepped in when a performer didn’t arrive for an evening set and the rest is history. Some may see that as a stroke of luck, but Jason has other ideas. “I don’t believe in fate. A lot of people in this business talk about luck, but I’ve always found that the harder I work, the luckier I get,” he says. As a man of many talents, Jason’s career has multiple strands, but stand-up comedy will always be closest to his heart. “It’s what I’ve been doing the longest and the thing I’m the best at. No one tells me what to do and I don’t have to worry about Ofcom or TV guidelines. It’s just me.” In the future, Jason would love to do more “heartwarming sitcoms” like Scarborough, the BBC series in which he starred alongside Catherine Tyldesley last year. But with so much on at the moment, his new year wish is for a holiday. “My next career goal is a week off,” he laughs. INTERVIEW: EMILY HORAN
