Summer Travel Tips Navigating a busy airport can be a pain. These tips can make your preboarding experience an enjoyable one.

1. GET TO KNOW YOUR AIRPORTS If you’ve

got connecting or multiple flights, take some time to research the airports you’ll visit. Knowing where certain amenities are located (like the secluded day suites in Cathay Pacific’s The Pier lounge at the Hong Kong International Airport) before you arrive can be a huge help.

Chinese broccoli, also known as Chinese kale, is part of the broccoli family. Along with its thick bright green stalks that resemble broccoli, this veggie has a darker leafy end that more resembles kale. In Cantonese, it's known as gai lan and is often used in stir-fry dishes. If you’re all thumbs when it comes to painting your own nails, you’re definitely not alone. Follow these steps and you’ll achieve a professional-looking polish without taking a trip to the salon.

Shape your nails with a file. Be sure to file in only one direction to avoid splitting the nail.

Soak your fingers in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes to soften your cuticles. Rub the area with cuticle oil and, using a wooden stick, gently push the cuticles back toward the skin.

Wipe each nail with a cotton pad doused in nail polish remover to ensure that the base coat properly adheres. This will keep the base coat in place and prevent any pigment from staining the nail.

Apply the base coat by starting with one swipe along the tip of the nail before coating the rest of its surface.

For impeccable results, it’s important to apply thin layers of polish. First, wipe the brush to get rid of any excess polish. Then, bend your fingers and seal the end of the nail, as you did with the base coat. Let dry, then add another coat to intensify the colour.

SMOOTH A SMUDGE You just ruined a freshly painted nail. To fix this typical blunder, dip the tip of your index finger (finger pad, not nail) in an acetone-free nail polish remover, then gently rub it in a circular motion on the smudge. Major booboo? Smooth the surface using a buffer, then apply a thin layer of colour and a top coat.

After five decades working in the modelling industry, at 69 she broke the glass ceiling by landing a major beauty contract, becoming the face of CoverGirl Cosmetics. What drives you to continue and keep doing what you’re doing? Will you ever retire? No, I don’t want to slow down. I love travelling and the work has given me lots of opportunity for that. My mom didn’t retire until she was 96; she was exhibiting her artwork every week at the library in Canmore, Alta. At 94, her hand was shaking quite a bit so she started doing computer art—she taught herself that!

Q

You were born in Canada but moved to South Africa at a young age. Can you tell me how you feel about our country today? Canada has been very good to me. I was born in Regina, but my parents moved to South Africa when I was two—hence the accent—and I grew up with these wonderful Canadian parents. I had no idea there were such things as dysfunctional families! Then, when I was 41, my children were saying, “We should go back to Canada.” So my kids got citizenship and we moved to Toronto. I was immediately taken on by the University of Toronto as a research officer and I did another master’s degree in science. I really reached my peak here. I was the president of the Consulting Dieticians Network of Canada and I did my best modelling ever because there weren’t many older models in Toronto. Then my

kids moved to the United States and they wanted me to go with them—this was 22 years ago. I said, “I can’t move!” but they convinced me. They said, “We’ll take care of you.” I’ve been back here many times and I still have lots of family here, so we’re pretty much Canadian that way.

Q

What exciting opportunities has being with CoverGirl brought you? Many clients are booking me now because they think I’m really special since I’m a CoverGirl. Also, I’m doing a lot of speaking engagements— in the last year I’ve travelled to Kiev, Shanghai, Stockholm and Johannesburg, talking about women being successful at all ages. Many societies ignore older women, so I’m speaking about not fearing the aging process, and about how women can be relevant—and stylish— and contribute to society at every age.

What does aging gracefully mean to you? Well, I don’t even think about aging, let alone gracefully! My mom and dad taught us good manners, and my mom was always considered gracious and graceful. I guess I’ve learned from her.

What are your guilty pleasures? Food! Just last night I had the most delicious chocolate dessert [at Café Boulud at Toronto’s Four Seasons Hotel].

Do you enjoy doing social media? I love it. It’s free advertising! I spend a lot of time on it because I like to do it right. It’s important to me to credit people who’ve been kind—hair, makeup, clothing, whatever!

It’s likely been decades

since you and your siblings experienced those universal issues most brothers and sisters face—wrestling over the remote, bickering over time in the bathroom, arguing over sitting shotgun. And if you’ve managed to overcome petty sibling rivalries and maintain a respectful relationship in adulthood, good on you— not only have you undoubtedly made Mom and Dad proud, you’ve also pretty much guaranteed social and emotional support during life’s stressful times. “Sibling relationships can teach us a lot about XQGHUVWDQGLQJ FRPSDVVLRQ QHJRWLDWLRQ FRQĂ€LFW resolution, communication and emotion regulation, DQG FDQ EHQHÂżW KRZ ZH UHODWH WR RWKHUV ZH KDYH relationships with,â€? says Katrina Shaw, a registered psychologist in Calgary. That said, we don’t get to choose our siblings—we get stuck with them. And if you’ve never felt close, you’ve drifted apart or you haven’t mastered speaking to each other as grown-ups who aren’t vying for your parents’ attention, consider this a gentle nudge to make headway. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Family Communication found that openness is at the top of the list when it comes to staying close with brothers and sisters, as is the ability to contribute equally and share tasks. The thing is, siblings will eventually have to broach super-tough— and super-common—topics, and it will be easier to work together if you can connect and communicate, says Shaw. Here’s how to do it.

Stacy* says dealing with her younger sister about how to care for their ailing father was contentious, to put it politely. “It wasn’t safe for him to live on his own anymore and my sister and I weren’t even remotely on the same page about what he needed, where he should go and how much everything was going to cost,â€? she says, adding their distance from each other was also a serious bone of contention. “Disproportionate responsibility in parental care is a common problem,â€? Shaw says. Âł6LEOLQJV SK\VLFDOO\ IDUWKHU DZD\ PD\ JHW R̆ WKH KRRN in caring for their parents, or one sibling may earn more money than the others and be expected to pay more for their parents’ care.â€?

How to bring it up. When Kim* and her sisters cleaned out their mother’s home after she passed away, it was basically a free-for-all. “There were items I wanted that meant a lot to me—some of P\ PRPÂśV MHZHOOHU\ ÂżJXULQHV VKH FROOHFWHG , IHHO OLNH my sisters hoarded things that were special to me.â€? How to bring it up. Approach your siblings in an open dialogue to prevent them from getting defensive, advises Shaw. “If you invite them to share the things that are most important or sentimental to them, you can communicate what’s important to you. Shaw says, adding you should ask yourself why you’re uncomfortable around your brotherin-law and whether or not you can shift your thinking about him. “If your issues are out of concern for your sibling’s well-being or safety, you may need to have a loving and frank conversation, acknowledging that you know this isn’t an easy talk to have,â€? she says. YOU’RE NOT TAKING REGULAR BATHROOM BREAKS Constipation is one of the most common complaints with an underactive thyroid, says Dr. Kelly. Hypothyroidism can slow down many of the body’s systems including gut motility and, ultimately, elimination, resulting in frequent constipation.

YOU’RE TIRED, DEPRESSED OR ANXIOUS A spike of serious anxiety can be a sign of hyperthyroidism, while an unusual bout of fatigue or the blues can be a clue that your thyroid is underperforming. Postpartum depression can frequently be associated with an underactive thyroid, says Dr. Kreisman. “It’s not recommended that everyone [postpartum] is checked, but anyone who is feeling more down than expected should have their thyroid looked at,” he says. An underactive thyroid may also explain why your antidepressants don’t seem to be working all of a sudden, says Dr. Kelly: “If you have an underactive thyroid and you’re being treated for depression, you might have a suboptimal response if your thyroid isn’t being treated.”

YOU’RE EXPERIENCING STRANGE SLEEP PATTERNS A rapid pulse and feelings of anxiety are classic symptoms of hyperthyroidism, and they can easily keep you up at night. On the flip side, if you’re wanting to stay in bed all the time, that could be due to the dip in hormone levels that comes with an underactive thyroid, slowing bodily functions and making you want to hide under the covers all day.

YOUR PERIOD IS ABNORMAL “Really light or really heavy periods that have started unexpectedly are common symptoms of a thyroid problem,” says Wilson. A hypothyroid or a hyperthyroid can cause periods to be lighter or heavier than usual. And if either condition is severe, you may miss your periods altogether.

YOU CAN’T FOCUS If you find yourself zipping around from one task to the next but never finishing anything, it can be a sign of an overactive thyroid. “You may feel like you’re speedy, but you’re not as effective in completing tasks because you're anxious,” says Dr. Kelly. This can mess with your ability to concentrate at work, for example, and may even affect your memory.

YOUR SEX LIFE IS SUFFERING Some of the typical symptoms of hypothyroidism, including fatigue and depression, can really kill the romance. According to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, thyroid disorders are recognized as possibly having a negative effect on sexual function. Vaginal dryness (which can mean off-putting painful sex) can also be linked to an underactive thyroid.

YOU’RE PACKING ON THE POUNDS Weight gain is a major complaint heard by all of our experts. “Over time, we all have fluctuations in our weight, but if all of a sudden you’re gaining progressively and things you used to do to get your weight under control aren’t working, that’s a sign that you need to get your thyroid looked at,” says Wilson.




The great hormone replacement debate Treating an overactive thyroid is fairly straightforward, with one option being a one-time dose of radioactive iodine (followed by thyroid hormone to balance it out). How to best manage an underactive thyroid, on the other hand, is a bit of a hot topic. Experts agree that lifting hormone levels with drug therapy is essential for normal bodily functions, but getting the balance of medication just right can be tricky. Endocrinologists typically prescribe a regimen of T4. “Most of my patients on thyroid hormone feel just great, but there’s a small minority who say they still don’t feel right,” says Dr. Kreisman. According to Wilson, and the many support groups and social media threads on the topic, more than the occasional patient continues to complain of low energy or feeling the blues on standard therapy and not experiencing symptom improvement. Some lobby to receive a combination of T4 and T3 (also called natural desiccated thyroid or NDT). The trouble is, T3 comes with some significant risks because its shorter half-life means it may need to be taken multiple times a day, which can lead to potentially harmful hormone spikes. “I always say the biggest risk is [a practitioner] who doesn’t know how to dose it properly,” says Wilson. There’s a danger of hyperthyroid symptoms, including heart palpitations and anxiety. If it isn’t prescribed correctly, and a woman experiences frequent or extended periods of hyperthyroidism, this medication can cause other health problems. “It’s bad for your bones and bad for your heart,” says Dr. Kreisman. “Even though I’m not a big believer in the approach, I don’t have a problem leaving some of my patients on combination therapy if they are happier with that treatment,” says Dr. Kreisman. “As long as they remain in range,” which, he says, may mean more frequent blood tests to keep tabs on your TSH level, as well as the potential for several dosage changes in the beginning to get the replacement amounts just right. Treatment for hypothyroidism shouldn’t begin and end with hormone replacement, though, says Wilson. “I’m always wanting to figure out what’s causing the underactive thyroid,” she says. If it’s caused by an autoimmune issue, it could trace back to inflammation, a nutrient deficiency, an acute viral infection or even stress, she says. “I’d rather fix the underlying problem than just put a bandage on it.” CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2019 | 59

“The first thing anyone sees when they walk into my house is a big bright orange chair,â€? says Toronto-based designer and homeowner Rebecca Hay. “So it’s immediately clear we don’t take ourselves super seriously!â€? In fact, WKH DUPFKDLU ZDV D VLGH RI WKH URDG ÂżQG Âł,W ZDV FRYHUHG ZLWK DZIXO faux leather, but it had a great silhouette. My husband and I didn’t have much money at the time, so I forced him to help me drag it into the car,â€? she says with a laugh. Having reupholstered the chair in citrus-toned polyester-blend fabric and introduced it into her living room, Rebecca took the laid-back fun factor further, pairing the vibrant wingback with happy yellow in the drapes and sapphire blue in side chairs. “Colour is delightfully personal, so it’s always inviting,â€? says the designer. Like many older homes, this one, built in 1918, has no family room, so this space had to do more than look great. It had to be kid- and dog-friendly, too. So, for the sofa, Rebecca chose leather. “Our two young children have proven that the leather sofa is pretty much indestructible!â€? she says. To arrange the vintage coffee table, Rebecca visually divided it in quadrants. “I placed tall items in one area, mementos in another and coffee table books in the third. IDEA MAKER “I love fabric!” says Rebecca. That’s why her starting point for a palette is often a toss cushion. The ikat ones here were the inspiration for the orange armchair and yellow drapes, which are hung higher and drawn wider than the window to accentuate the room’s grandeur.

STYLE COLLECTIVE In the dining room, wooden elements, from the chair bases to the mod Mennonite-crafted table, lend warmth. The artwork, which frames the doorway and widens the visual field, features touches of blue that reinforce the accent hue on the end chairs and transition the eye to the living area. Polenta Mist baking sheet with cooking spray; set aside. In medium pot, bring chicken broth to boil. Add polenta and stir with wooden spoon; cook according to package directions. When polenta is cooked, stir in cheese and season with salt and pepper; stir well. Spread polenta out on baking sheet to thickness of 1 inch; let cool. Soup In large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add potatoes and cook, stirring often, 5 minutes; season with salt and pepper. Add lettuce and parsley; stir. Add enough water to pot to completely cover ingredients. Increase heat until boiling; reduce heat to simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes. Transfer mixture to blender and purée until smooth. Return soup to pot; add whipping cream and broth; season with salt and pepper and cover to keep warm. Cut cooled polenta into ¾-inch cubes. In small skillet, heat oil over medium heat; add cubes and cook until golden. Divide soup among bowls; garnish with toasted polenta cubes.
