THE CATCH UP
Hello, people readers!
T
HINGS are back to normal and our December break is a distant memory. So much has happened over the past two weeks, that if I had my own way, I would publish a 200page magazine! #JK! #maybe? Getting back to reality, the raging wildfires that have ripped through Australia are just devastating; at the time of going to print 24 people have been killed and many more are missing. People have lost their homes and it’s been estimated that more than 500-million mammals, birds and reptiles have been lost since September. It’s truly just heartbreaking. Turn to page 11 to get an idea of just how enormous the inferno is. If you can help out in any way, please visit www.salvationarmy. org.au, www.rspcansw.org.au/ bushfire-appeal or donate.wwf.org.au. Every little bit helps! It’s a new year and a lot of us start those off with resolutions. If one of yours is to travel then you need to turn to pages 18 and 19 as we have compiled 20 Mzansi Hotspots to visit this year. This past December my family and I had a drive out to Hartbeespoort dam, and it was a truly stunning day out. There is just so much to see and do. (You have to have luch at French Toast Koffie Kafee ‒ such an unbelievably charming little place with food that is just divine.) When you have a look at the others on our list, you’ll see you don’t need to travel overseas for a travel experience ‒ we have so many beautiful places right on our doorstep! Until next time,

ACTRESS Sara Gilbert and songwriter Linda Perry have split after five years of marriage. Former Roseanne star Gilbert filed documents for legal separation in Los Angeles Superior Court and cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. She also requested that neither of them receive spousal support. According to sources, Gilbert listed the date of their separation as August 13. The stars began dating in 2011 and married in 2014. Gilbert gave birth to their son, Rhodes Emilio Gilbert Perry, in February 2015. No details were given about custody arrangements. Gilbert, who has two kids from a previous relationship, announced she was leaving hit US daytime panel show The Talk, which she co-created, in April, to spend more time with her family. She’s currently starring in Roseanne-spin-off The Conners. Perry, who fronted rock band 4 Non Blondes, has become an indemand songwriter and producer for artists like Christina Aguilera and Pink.

ACTRESS Michelle Williams is reportedly engaged and expecting her second child with Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail. Williams, 39, is already mom to Matilda, her 14-year-old daughter from her relationship with the late Heath Ledger. The four-time Oscar-nominee worked with Kail on the hit TV series Fosse/Verdon, for which she won an Emmy Award. The engagement news comes less than a year after Williams split from musician Phil Elverum, whom she was briefly married to from 2018 to 2019. This will also be 42-year-old Kail’s second marriage – he was previously married to actress Angela Christian.

THE CATCH UP MADONNA and ex Guy Ritchie were at odds over whether their son Rocco should join her for a New Year’s holiday. News of the pair’s latest dispute first emerged two days before Christmas, when the Snatch filmmaker filed a motion seeking an ‘enforcement of a judgement or order’ in the New York court, which deals with matters related to their divorce and custody arrangements. According to sources, the spat was over whether Rocco had to join his mom and the rest of her brood on a holiday in the Maldives over the New Year, with the director insisting it was up to their son to decide. “Things had settled down between Madonna and Guy – especially with Rocco being a bit older – but it all kicked off again,” the insider said. The couple were involved in a fierce custody dispute over Rocco back in 2016, which ended with the teenager living with his dad in London.

NAOMI WATTS has slammed the stigma surrounding menopause. The 51-yearold actress opened up about the shift in a woman’s hormones, a natural part of ageing that usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age, which sees the body stop producing oestrogen and progesterone, and slammed the idea that the term is often considered a ‘dirty word’. “Menopause should not be a dirty word. It’s such a shame society has made it so,” she told Britain’s The Sunday Times newspaper’s Style magazine. “We need support from each other, and to not be made to feel like unsexy, infertile, crabby old ladies that should be sent out to pasture.” She added, “We actually have wisdom and compassion that far outweighs youthful arrogance. Along with some mood swings and floods of tears on the side.”

SHARON STONE’S profile on dating site Bumble was blocked after users assumed it was fake and reported it. The 61-year-old actress told followers on Twitter that she’d turned to the site in a bid to find love, but her quest was halted from the get-go when suspicions rose about her profile. “I went on the @bumble dating sight [sic] and
they closed my account,” she wrote. “Some users reported that it couldn’t possibly be me! Hey @bumble is being me exclusionary? Don’t shut me out of the hive.” Sharon is believed to have been single since splitting from her last boyfriend, Enzo Cursio. The pair were last seen together in late 2018. Speaking to previously about her
relationship status, the screen star insisted she’s more than happy to be a single mother to her three sons – Roan, 19, Laird, 14, and Quinn, 13. “I think somewhere in the back of your mind you think maybe one day you won’t be a single parent,” she said. “Then, eventually you realise, I think it’s better. I’m no longer hoping or someone.”
RITA ORA has suggested she’s too famous to stroll around London and grab coffee. The How We Do hitmaker was asked about her ideal way to spend the day during the launch of her new show The Masked Singer U.K., and confessed she wishes she could wander around the British capital like she used to before finding fame. The 29-year-old said, “I’m going to be boring and say something really simple. I’d love to go shopping down Portobello Road with my sister and mom. Grab coffee and cake in a cute little café and have a wander around the streets. It’s been a little while since I’ve been able to do that and I can’t think of a better way to spend a day.” The singer appears as a judge on the programme alongside chat show host Jonathan Ross, TV presenter Davina McCall, and the The Hangover actor Ken Jeong, which sees masked celebrities compete to pull off the best performance as the judges attempt to guess their identity.

JENNIFER ANISTON really got into the Christmas spirit as she threw the ‘party of the year’. The Morning Show actress took to Instagram to share a playful snap of herself with friends including Laura Dern, Rita Wilson, and her friend and hairstylist Chris McMillan, as she shared a glimpse of the celebrations. “Say CHEESE!! Lotta love in that room,” she wrote in the caption. “Happy Holidays!” The former Friends star also paid tribute to her father John Aniston with a sweet Christmas Day post. She took to Instagram with a pair of ‘then and now’ shots, showing a snap of the pair when Jennifer was a little girl and as well as at their most recent holiday celebration. “Christmas with one of my creators,” she captioned the post. “Then and now #TBT.” She added: “Love you, papa.” John, 86, who played Victor Kiriakis on the soap opera Days Of Our Lives, was married to Jennifer’s mother Nancy Dow from 1965 until 1980. We won this on an auction for Northie for Christmas and we had it tacked up so she can wear it. The sleeves are half-tacked up so when she gets older, we can un-tack the sleeve and it can grow with her. She can have this for her whole life. She’s so grateful and excited.” It’s not clear what Kim and Kanye paid for the jacket, which the King of Pop wore to attend one of his friends’, Elizabeth Taylor’s, birthday parties, but the item was valued between (R2.8-million and R4.2-million).

Australia Burning M
ANY areas of Australia now resemble Venusian landscapes, with dark orange skies and thick smoke looming over people huddled on beaches as they try to escape the continent’s worst-ever fires.
Like something out of a Hollywood disaster movie, long rows of cars have been seen leaving towns to flee the inferno. At the time of going to print these are some figures that show the massive damage that has been done. (And it’s set to continue for the next two months, with the fires even creating their own fierce and destructive weather patterns.) TWENTY FOUR people have died so far. SIX-MILLION hectares (60 000km2 or 14.8-million acres) of bush, forest and parks have been burnt. IN New South Wales 1 300 houses have burnt down with those residents having to evacuate to safety. OVER 800 000 hectares have burnt in the state of Victoria. ON New Year’s Eve, Mallacoota residents fled for their lives to the beach. Only a change in the wind’s direction kept the fires from reaching them there as well. The Australian Navy evacuated around 1 000 tourists and residents to further down the coast. FLAMES have reached as high as 70m – to get an idea of how high this is, Sydney Opera House is 65m tall.

IT is reported that a climate phenomenon has created the heatwave, known as a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) – ‘an event where sea surface temperatures are warmer in the western half of the ocean, cooler in the east. The difference between the two temperatures is currently the strongest in 60 years’. APPROXIMATELY half a billion animals have been affected by the fires (not all necessarily deaths). This figure was calculated by expert on Australian biodiversity at the University of Sydney Professor Chris Dickman. “It is estimated that there were an average of 17.5 mammals, 20.7 birds and 129.5 reptiles per hectare (10 000m2, so 100m2 on each side – about the size of a rugby pitch). This is multiplied that by the amount of land hit by the fires,” Dickman told the BBC. Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who has been accused of not acknowledging the effects of climate change, has received massive criticism over his handling of the fires. On his walkabouts to meet fire victims he was heckled, with furious and traumatised residents refusing to shake his hand and openly swearing at him.

OMANCE isn’t all plain sailing, especially in Hollywood, but for this new couple it seems the problems are setting in fast. It wasn’t that long ago that Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerbe introduced us to their all-grown-up model daughter Kaia, 18 – who, let us add, is the spitting image of her mom, a former supermodel – and before we knew it she was strutting her stuff on the catwalk alongside Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. If they will bring up something that I don’t quite understand ‒ a reference or something ‒ I just really quickly Google it, and then I’ll make a list of the things that I’ve Googled during the day, and go back to them that night and learn about them.”

“ITS pretty much the same every year ‒ my resolution is always to reflect back and look at ways I can just simplify my life and find ways that I can appreciate the many blessings that I have. I think it’s so easy to get caught up in the rat race of everything that you forget that it’s all good ‒ well, maybe not all of it is good but most of it is really, really good. So that’s pretty much always the same. I always fall slightly short of what I’m hoping to do but I try to keep it realistic.”

HOTSPOTS YOU NEED TO VISIT IN
LIFESTYLE BY EL BROIDE
BO-KAAP
BO-KAAP has certainly become one of South Africa’s most unique neighbourhoods. Known for its brightly coloured houses, there is more to Bo-Kaap than meets the eye. The neighbourhood is situated at the foot of Signal Hill and was formerly known as the Malay Quarter where, in the 1760s, people from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa who were brought to work in the Cape were housed. The neighbourhood has a rich history and a distinct culinary offering and brings in people from all around the globe. But why the colourful houses? Well, when the Malay were slaves, their oppressors would not let them paint their rented houses anything other than white. So, when they were freed and allowed to purchase the houses they’ve been living in for years, the residents painted their property in bright colours as an expression of their freedom.

WHY deal with the hassles of passports and visas when some of the best tourist places to visit are right on your doorstep?
W
HILE the world gets smaller and smaller with easier and more direct flights to favourite destinations, we often forget that some of the world’s greatest treasures lie on our very doorstep. Make the most of all our beautiful country has to offer and make a plan to visit these incredible destinations in 2020.
1 THE BIG HOLE
THE BIG HOLE is an open-pit and underground mine situated in the town of Kimberly in the Northern Cape. Kimberly used to be a mining town and what has today come to be known as the Big Hole was dug by over 50 000 miners between 1871 and 1914 with picks and shovels yielding 2 722 kilograms of diamonds extracted from 22.5 million tonnes of excavated earth. Today there sits an fascinating museum adjacent to the hole, which gives audiences a deeper history into the town and how the Big Hole came to be. The centre also has a replica of the old town of Kimberly, which is a must-see in itself.
3
HARTBEESPOORT DAM
LESS than an hour’s drive from Johannesburg’s bustling city centre is the beautiful Hartbeespoort Dam. The small town is the ultimate destination for a quick break from the city and plays host to a multitude of holiday resorts and B&Bs, with the dam perfect for taking the boat out for a ride and the exciting craft markets a treasure trove to explore. Other attractions include Pretville, a movie set-turned-restaurantand-movie house, and the popular Chameleon Village, which is home to some of the best African souvenirs.
LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE
A STRANGE idea seems to have developed that Lesedi Cultural Village is a place only foreign tourists should visit but this couldn’t be more wrong; it is truly a celebration of our heritage and an area all South Africans need to take in. Lesedi Cultural Village gives guests a chance to experience traditional African life at five authentic tribal homesteads. A visit to these homesteads opens up a genuine window into the lifestyles, customs and traditions of the Zulu, Xhosa, Bapedi, Basotho and Ndebele people. With a stunning craft market, audio-visual presentation and a delicious buffet lunch or dinner after your tour, Lesedi Cultural Village truly is the ultimate celebration of Mzansi’s heritage.

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK is the largest national park in South Africa, covering a staggering 19 485 km2 ‒ which is larger than the size of the whole of Israel! Home to the Big Five ‒ elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard ‒ there is no better place to go on safari. With a variety of five-star hotels and bush lodges in the park, the experience can become costly but there are more affordable alternatives just outside the gates. There are guided game drives or self-drive options, if you want to immerse yourself in the beautiful fauna and flora Africa has to offer, so a trip to the Kruger National Park is basically mandatory.
6
GOLD REEF CITY
GOLD REEF CITY is certainly Africa’s playground. Built to look like an authentic mining town, Gold Reef City is one of the biggest theme parks on the continent. Home to hair-raising rollercoasters like the Anaconda and the Golden Loop as well as brand-new thrill rides like the High-Flying Maverick and the Storm Chaser, it truly has something for everyone. Besides the theme park there’s the entertainment complex, home to a state-of-the-art casino, two fourstar hotels, conferencing and teambuilding facilities, an epic cinema reminiscent of an old train station and an array of restaurants.
ROBBEN ISLAND
ROBBEN ISLAND played a monumental role in the history of South Africa. It was used as prison and a place of banishment and exile from around 1671, when the Dutch began to send convicts there. From 1961 it was used as a prison for political prisoners and housed famous inmates like Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Jacob Zuma and many more. In 1991, all political prisoners were freed and all ordinary prisoners in 1996. Today, the island serves as a strong reminder of the injustice of Apartheid and still houses the infamous prison, now a museum. A trip to Robben Island is both educational and scenic.
8
APARTHEID MUSEUM
THE injustices of Apartheid are still felt in everyday life in South Africa today, and it’s crucial to continue educating ourselves and visitors about the country’s darkest time. This is why places like the Apartheid Museum are so important. The experience starts as soon as you enter the gates, with the museum highlighting the racially prejudiced system that ruled the country from 1948 to 1994. With a variety of film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts on show, the Apartheid Museum is a significant reminder of South Africa’s horrific past.
19
9 USHAKA MARINE WORLD
NESTLED at the very beginning of Durban’s Golden Mile is Kwazulu Natal’s ultimate entertainment destination: uShaka Marine World. The venue has one of the best water parks in the country as well as a massive aquarium that educates visitors on the varieties of sea life and the importance of taking care of our oceans. Just outside the park is situated an entertainment complex, which is home to a variety of stores and restaurants. With its unique offering, the complex is one of the most popular entertainment destinations on South Africa’s east coast.
10
CONSTITUTION HILL
TODAY, Constitution Hill is the setting for the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the popular Flame Of Democracy, but during Apartheid the venue housed a prison where both political activists and common criminals were held. Popular prisoners included Mahatma Gandhi, who was imprisoned there in 1906, as well as Nelson Mandela, Joe Slovo, Bram Fischer, Albert Lutuli and Robert Sobukwe. Today, tour groups from around the world come to get a glimpse of the life the prisoners lived in their cells but also a reminder of the progress South Africa has made as a democracy.

ALTHOUGH bright lips an a smoky eye still have their place in the beaut world, ‘no make-up’ ‒ aka glowing, dewy skin ‒ is the new must-have. Soft strobing and ‘nontouring’ dewiness has taken the place of heavy contouring. Cheat your way to professional glow by using clear mult purpose balm (Vaseline works in a pinch too) and tap it on lids, cheekbones, down the brid of the nose, and on lips. Not confident enoug to go foundation-free? Work an illuminating foundation onto the areas of the skin that ne some extra coverage.

LOOK out for the following symptoms, courtesy of Alaskasleep.com:
• MOST children fall asleep within 20 minutes of going to bed. According to experts, how long it takes to get to sleep can depend on how tired your child’s body is, and also on their daytime and bedtime routine. • DURING the night, your child cycles between light sleep, deep sleep and dream sleep ‒ most of their deep sleep falls within the first few hours after falling asleep.

Get your kids to bed at the same time every night ‒ routine is important. Keep electronic devices out of the bedroom: no TVs, iPads, or cellphones! Limit screen time an hour before bedtime to help let their minds relax. Read a book to them before tucking them in. Make sure they have had enough food at the right time — you don’t want them to feel too full by eating too late, or have them eat too early and need a nibble later on. Make sure they have enough sunlight during the day. Don’t allow older kids to have caffeine in the afternoon or evening. Make sure your child’s mattress is comfortable, and that they feel safe in their environment.

ITH the year just getting started, and you having to get back into routine, you might be finding it hard to get the family tucked in and sleeping on time ‒ and you’re all probably struggling to get a good night’s rest because of it. But it’s vital that this changes, especially for your kids. Here are some reasons why you need adequate sleep (and tips on how to get it).
EXPERTS suggest you chat to your medical professional if your child has sleep problems that go on for more than two to four weeks, or that affect your child’s daily life.

LIFESTYLE WHAT THE TAROT HOLDS BY MADAME LIRA DE MENTUM
IF you play your cards right, you’ll have a great week!
Pisces
(February 19 – March 20) Card Of The Week: The Magician STOP telling yourself you aren’t good enough. The self-bashing needs to stop, and right now. Whatever (or whoever) made you feel like you’re not of any value had their own motives for making you feel insignificant and, in fact, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.
Aries
(March 21 – April 19) Card Of The Week: Knight Of Pentacles FINANCIAL woes are keeping you up at night and causing anxiety. Before you panic, try to look at your financial situation calmly. You may not be able to meet all your obligations immediately but that doesn’t mean you can’t start chipping away at loans, bonds and other repayments. Slowly does it.
Taurus
(April 20 – May 20) Card Of The Week: The Empress (reversed) STOP being so nosey. These past weeks have seen you place way too much effort in other people’s affairs. While keeping up with the neighbours makes for interesting competition, all you’re doing is neglecting your own needs. Concentrate on making the very best of your own life.
Gemini
(May 21 – June 20) Card Of The Week: Six Of Swords YOU aren’t usually this lucky but the last few weeks have seen you get what you want. Don’t expect a free ride every time, as that is likely to backfire on you. Regarding relationships, you don’t forgive easily but a request from someone who did you wrong may see you wonder if forgiveness might be the only way you heal your own hurt.
Cancer
(June 21 – July 22) Card Of The Week: The Star IT’S time you were on the receiving end of a basket full of blessings. The Star is a card that holds a glimpse of promise. Whatever you have asked the Universe to provide you with, is on its way – perhaps not in the form of a six-figure cheque, but your heart will rejoice either way. Always remember yin and yang find a way of balancing the scales.
Leo
(July 23 – August 22) Card Of The Week: Ace Of Pentacles (reversed) IT was an expensive Christmas and it’s been a particularly quiet January in terms of money flow. A few mishaps (burst geyser, leaking pools, blocked plumbing, and so forth) have called for unexpected expenses and unfortunately these weren’t budgeted for, leaving you feeling anxious. Be careful not to depend on an outside source to bail you out. If you have to burn the midnight candle, so be it; borrowing isn’t advisable.
Virgo
(August 23 – September 22) Card Of The Week: The Hanged Man IT’S time for a change of approach, especially when it comes to relationships. Your tried and tested recipe for love and friendship needs a little tweaking. Perhaps you’ve fallen into a cycle of dating the same type of person over and over again; maybe as soon as you become friends with someone you do something to sabotage things. Determine what triggers your behaviour, address those underlying emotions and determine how you can meet your emotional needs without ruining your relationships.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Card Of The Week: The High Priestess
STOP fighting over religion. Whether you’re upset your partner won’t go with you to church on a Sunday, or you’re the one in fact who feels pressurised to practise someone else’s religion, let it be. If your friends and family don’t agree with your spirituality, don’t let that bother you. You see things the way that you do for a reason and have a right to make up your own mind.
The High Priestess
THE HIGH PRIESTESS is a card of mystery. A woman sits surrounded by pomegranates, dressed in blue robes with a cross on her chest and her hands in her lap. She has a moon crescent at her feet and a crown on her head with a globe in the middle. The letters B and J appear on pillars either side of her ‒ B stands for Boaz, signifying negation, while J stands for Jachin, meaning beginning. Often, this card is a reminder to trust your own instincts.

I
F you thirst for all things mystical our weekly tarot reading will guide you to a clearer path. One card drawn for each of star signs shows you what to expect and how to improve your week!
Libra
(September 23 – October 22) Card Of The Week: The Emperor YOU’RE going to be offered a leadership position which will boost your confidence and self-assurance. Try not to abuse your power and keep both your feet on the ground. Your mind has been very preoccupied with a father figure who has re-entered your life after of a period of absence. Whether your own flesh and blood or not, this person demands respect. Beware of conflict on the horizon.
Scorpio
(October 23 – November 21) Card Of The Week: Two Of Wands YOU’RE usually quite decisive but find yourself torn in this period. You may have a choice between staying in your current job and taking a new job, remaining with or leaving your partner, or perhaps even accepting a university placement or finding a different place of study. While being in a position of choice is actually a blessing, knowing which road to choose can be challenging. Whatever road you chose, remember all paths come with lessons.
Sagittarius
(November 22 – December 21) Card Of The Week: Four Of Swords IT’S time to celebrate! This week brings wonderful opportunities to spend time with close family and friends so whatever the invite might be, say yes! This card can also sometimes mean that you will be moving your place of residence. Moving can be bitter-sweet so try keeping your wits about you and don’t let the stress of packing leave you grumpy. Health-wise, if you’re waiting on results from a test, you are likely to soon be receiving positive news.
Capricorn
(December 22 – January 19) Card Of The Week: Page Of Wands (reversed) SOMETHING big is happening and you’re not sure whether to tell anyone or keep it to yourself. It may not be a secret in the typical sense of the word but it is something that will affect those around you. When this Page appears reversed, he reminds you to slow down and enjoy being present with what you are learning. He might also specify that you need to take a more logical approach to attaining your goals.

What Is Pet Insurance?
PET insurance helps cover the cost of veterinary care when your pet becomes ill or injured. It is designed to make it affordable for any pet owner to provide their precious pet with the best possible health care. It’s no surprise to many pet owners that the rising costs of veterinary care can hit a family hard and, unfortunately, many families are faced with the daunting decision to euthanise their beloved pet because they cannot afford the treatment needed to save them.

, illness, and some cover both plus routine care. David Roache from Not all pet insurance Dotsure.co.za providers offer the same cover options either. South Africa’s leading pet insurance provider, Dotsure.co.za pet insurance, offers the following: Accidental Only Cover: From just R73pm, you can have peace of mind that when accidents happen, you can get the best veterinary care for your four-legged bestie. In all medically required procedures, you are covered for consultation fees, prescribed medicine, X-rays, surgery, hospitalisation, blood tests, etc. and reimbursed up to and according to the limits provided for in your selected plan. Only a handful of insurers offer accidental cover for senior pets (dogs and cats older than eight years), so be careful to read the small print. Accidental And Illness Cover: Your pet might have a severe accident or illness, which
can mean thousands of rands out of your pocket to help them recover. Illnesses like feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and kennel cough are becoming more prevalent in South Africa and medication costs are ever increasing. Parasites such as mosquitos, fleas and ticks can cause illnesses like heartworm, mange and undernutrition. Unfortunately, if left untreated these illnesses can cause permanent harm to your pets or possibly lead to death in younger pets. Veterinarian costs have skyrocketed (just like everything else), but from as little as R168pm, you can help protect your pet, and your wallet against these risks. Wellness Cover: Some pets require more maintenance than others. If your pampered pooch needs a little more attention, look for a pet insurance company that offers a superior range of wellness benefits, such as cover for microchipping, vaccinations, faecal tests, heartworm tests, flea control, nail trimming, elective sterilisation or neutering etc. Third-Party Liability Cover: Choose a provider that offers third-party liability cover to protect them against the risk and financial burden of their pet damaging someone else’s property, or even causing bodily harm to them or their pet, within the borders of South Africa.
Do I Really Need Medical Cover For My Dog?
WE can try to keep our dogs safe from accidents and illnesses, but we’re only human and they’re only curious. While we wish we could put our fur kids in bubbles to protect them from the jaws of the jealous Jack Russel next door or to prevent a nasty bladder infection from arriving uninvited, we can’t foresee and control everything that happens to or around them. Pet insurance gives you peace of mind that if/when something happens to your pooch, you don’t have to choose between your pet’s life and your finances. Pet insurance isn’t just a ‘nice to have’, but a necessity in today’s tough times. A vet bill can set you back upwards of R10 000 if emergency care is needed. Pet insurance protects you against these expensive vet bills.

A Good Match? A
RE you and your loved one compatible or is it just a fling? Sources says astrology can tell you a lot about why your relationship is or isn’t successful. Astrologers believe that birth charts are like an individual’s fingerprints, and that when you compare your birth chart with your partner’s, there are a few things that will show whether you can expect an easy romance or one that will need a lot of work. So what are you waiting for? Start taking notes!
you should only date Capricorns! Someone who has Capricorn as their Rising Sign, or who has a lot of planets in Capricorn, is naturally going to have a lot of Capricorn energy regardless of where their Sun is.
Having Supportive Saturn Aspects
SATURN, explain astrologers, governs stability and structure, which means ‘your Saturn placements should be compatible in order to establish a long-lasting relationship’.
Do You Have The Same Sun And Moon Signs?
ACCORDING to an astrologer for Popsugar. com, if you have the same sun Do You Have The Same and moon signs, ‘you’ve hit the Moon And Venus Signs? jackpot’. They WE’VE all read our horoscopes at some explain that, time (some more often than others) 'since the sun and we always often hear about the sign represents moon and Venus. And that’s because the outside self they’re important ‒ especially when it (basic identity) comes to love. ‘The moon (emotional and the moon needs) shows what we need to feel sign represents loved, while Venus (relationship needs) the inner self symbolises how we give that love’, (emotional explains astrologers. needs), this conjunction tells us that you two meld in just the right ways’. They add that this kind of relationship will see you have a ‘deep understanding of one another’s behaviours, nurturing style, and motives’.
The Impact Of Venus And Mars
VENUS rules our love language ‒ it is the planet of compassion and love. Astrologers explain that a person’s Venus sign tells you a lot about how they express romantic feelings and how they wish their partner would communicate these feelings. Mars rules sex (among other passionate topics). Astrologers explain that this connection means there’s an innate, carnal attraction present. You have to look at how they interact with each other and the rest of the planets across the two charts.
The Seventh House
WHO is ruling your Seventh House? According to Yourtango.com, ‘the qualities of the sign that rules this house can tell you a lot about the type of person who would be perfect for you’. For example, if Capricorn rules your Seventh House, you should find someone who is patient, takes commitment seriously, and is willing to work hard to achieve their goals’. But that doesn’t mean

DIG into your partner’s birth chart to find out more about your relationship. Astrologers say you need to look at how many aspects there are between all the planets across your two charts. And while you don’t need to know how to interpret every one of them, they explain that you need to have a general idea of how many positives and negatives there are. According to Yourtango.com, ‘a lot of aspects ‒ positive or negative ‒ suggest that you two will have many ways to help each other develop, and may even be together to continue a past life relationship’.

HERE are good and bad days, but how emotionally healthy are we all? Humans are not one-dimensional ‒ they are a sum of emotional, cognitive, behavioural and spiritual layers, each having its own set of levels. This means that it’s vital to make sure all aspects are functioning and healthy to maintain what experts call ‘an internal state of equilibrium and stability’. You might have heard people say that your diet is not just what you eat, and while that sounds strange, it’s very true. Keeping your body in good shape by hitting the gym
five days a week is great ‒ and exercise has proven to be beneficial for both body and mind ‒ but it’s important to keep your emotional health in just as great a shape as the rest of your body. Emotional health is affected by many things: what you watch, what you listen to, and even by the people you hang around with. And only you’re able to control what goes in and out. According to medical professionals, ‘people who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and are in turn able to cope with life’s challenges’. Familydoctor.org explains that
Be Aware Of Your Emotions And Reactions: You have to pay attention to what is going on around you ‒ what makes you happy, sad or even mad. Express Your Feelings In Appropriate Ways: Communication is important, so speak to people who have made you feel sad or angry and find out why. Learn To Manage Your Stress: Find relaxation techniques to help you cope ‒ yoga, meditation, exercising, or even a half hour of colouring in. Think First: Never act without thinking ‒ your emotions are more powerful than you think, so to avoid regret. Find A Healthy Balance Work And Play: Find new hobbies, meet up with friends ‒ keep your mind balanced and under control. Keep Your Physical Health In-Check: If you’re eating healthily, having regular check-ups and staying active, your mind will be healthier too. Find A Purpose: We all have a purpose in life ‒ find out what yours is and focus on it. Stay Positive: Keep negative people out of sight and only spend your time with those who matter. Having good emotional health is about having positive emotions and experiences. Grow Your Self-Awareness: This will allow you to see what habits and beliefs serve you and which do not. Know Your Boundaries: You need to know that what you’re doing is keeping you emotionally safe and happy ‒ even if it means saying NO! Be Content: With yourself and with your life. Be Curious: Experts reveal that people who are emotionally healthy ‘are flexible with the process of learning and have a curious mind’. Be Adaptable: You can’t always have things your way so be adaptable to
change and accept what cannot be. Build Healthy Relationships: Deep relationships, which are based more on quality than quantity, are what you need to focus on. Find relationships that are healthy, positive and nurturing. Be Confident: If you know where you’re supposed to be and love yourself for who you are, you are on the road to being emotionally healthy and happy. Be Resilient: When faced with a bumpy road, experts say you need to find a way to bounce back. Practise Gratitude: This is a healthy way to attract more of what you want in life. Plus, giving thanks automatically shifts your thoughts onto the positive rather than the negative.

Getting more and more frustrated and embarrassed by the long queue building up behind me and my tired kids performing, I was so grateful when I heard an ‘excuse me’, and a man just stopped and gave me two R5 coins! McKennah ahead of her localised brain radiation to target the tumours
FIVE!
SHE thought she had flu; it turned out to be so much worse.

M
CKENNAH Carter, 20, had the shock of her life when she was diagnosed with a tumour aged just 17. Once it was removed, she hoped that was the end of her experience with the wretched disease, and she was told she wouldn’t have to worry about cancer again. She soon learnt just how wrong that was. “At 17 years old I was diagnosed with stage one melanoma after finding a cancerous mole on my back. This is very treatable: you simply remove the area. Doctors also confirmed that it had not spread to the rest of my body,” recalls McKennah. “At the time I was very private about it and almost embarrassed. I didn’t want people to view me as the girl with cancer. I was told that the chances of it ever coming back were extremely unlikely. Most likely I would never have to worry about it for the rest of my life.” But a year later, McKennah started to experience flu-like symptoms and relentless headaches which she initially assumed were down to her pushing herself too hard. After a month, though, she went to the hospital. “The doctors were baffled by my symptoms because there was no logical reason to have such varied and random symptoms all throughout my body,” she says. The hospital did an MRI of McKennah’s brain, and made the shocking discovery of five brain tumours. To make matters worse, a CT scan and biopsy showed that the cancer had spread to her liver, lungs, bones and lymph nodes. McKennah was diagnosed with stage four metastatic melanoma and she started immunotherapy and radiation straight away. “My dad and I sat stunned by the news. I could not comprehend what was happening,” says McKennah. “Disbelief flooded my mind.
It never occured to me that the cancer would return so viciously. The tumours varied, the largest just under 2.5cm.” As her health swiftly deteriorated, McKennah recalls lying in a hospital bed and realising that she could resent the circumstances she found herself in, or she could be hopeful, and she firmly believes that after choosing the latter, her health started to improve because her mindset was positive. “I realised that I had a choice. I could choose to become bitter about my circumstances, or I could choose hope. From that moment on there was a shift in my health. I became stable enough to leave the hospital. Initially I chose to go for a more naturopathic route. I was still doing some conventional treatment, but the holistic and natural therapies truly helped me regain my health. I had an IV of vitamin C and of B17 as well as oral vitamin supplements, localised hypothermia, sonodynamic therapy, coffee enemas and hyperbaric chamber treatment. I did the holistic and natural therapies for two months before scans revealed that my tumours had shrunk.” But scans in October 2018 revealed that the tumours were starting to grow again, so McKennah continued with immunotherapy before brain surgery in December to remove a haemorrhaging brain tumour. Unfortunately, further scans in April 2019 discovered tumour growth in McKennah’s liver; it was found
that the immunotherapy wasn’t working, and there were no more treatment options. “For the first time, I felt like I could actually die. I again turned to integrative medicine in Canada, where I received full body hypothermia and localised hypothermia to my brain and liver, IV vitamin C and a mixture of other things. I also began pursuing a clinical trial called the tumour infiltrating lymphocyte trial (TIL). I was put on the waiting list in April and then accepted on the trial to begin treatment in October. I finished it on November 13, 2019.” McKennah explains that TIL involves reproducing one’s T cells in a lab, then giving them back to the subject in the hopes they will then have the ability to fight off the cancer. This entails a month in hospital and seven rounds of chemotherapy to break down the immune system before building it back up. “It works for 16 percent of patients, which seem like very daunting odds, but I have full confidence that I will receive my healing through this,” she says. “Many people miss the mental and physical connection when it comes to illness. I didn’t just need physical healing, I needed mental healing too. I took a good look at my heart and realised that it wasn’t my body that was broken, it was all of me. So, I began to use my struggles with cancer as an outlet for mental healing. It has helped me become a stronger, braver, and more peaceful person. It has also given me a compassion for others and an understanding of others suffering I never would have had.”
IT never occured to me that the cancer would return so viciously.

REAL LIFE It is suggested that hormones have an influence on lipoedema, as it tends to start mainly for women during puberty and during other periods of hormonal change. “I first noticed I was getting fatter during my early teens when I was going through puberty. I was known as the ‘fat kid’ with an abnormal shaped figure as my top half was noticeably slimmer than my bottom half,” Katie recalls. “Doctors always gave an unexplained cause of fat legs because I looked it, but to me it didn’t add up as I have never had a bad enough diet to account for the weight. At one point I weighed 160kg, so I underwent a gastric bypass in 2012, which helped me lose 63.5kg. However, my legs remained the same.” She adds, “I’ve had suicidal thoughts due to my condition getting worse and worse. During my first pregnancy I gained 44.5kg and my partner couldn’t even look at me; now we’ve separated. But it isn’t just the mental aspect of dealing with lipoedema that is hard; it’s the physical too. ATIE BAKER, 31, unknowingly developed lipoedema ‒ which causes an abnormal build-up of fat cells in the legs – when she was 13 and it worsened during her two pregnancies. Katie, from Ontario, Canada, thought she was just ‘fat’, but despite changing her diet and undergoing a gastric bypass her legs continued to balloon and now weigh an estimated combined weight of 20kg. medics believed it was merely ‘swelling’ until September last year. “I have spent most of my life feeling guilty and blaming myself for my legs – I thought I was ruining my own life by being fat,” she says. “I felt relieved when I was diagnosed. I had read about lipoedema before online, but I thought it seemed too good to be true as I’d always blamed myself. I didn’t understand how someone can be fat without it being their own fault.” Katie admits she suffered severe self-esteem issues, with her condition having been a constant focus of playground bullying. “Even when I take my children – Abigail, eight and Benjamin, one – to the park, kids ask me, ‘Why are your legs so gross?’ It’s never ending, and I just want to feel good in my skin.”

I have had to put my son Benjamin into childcare because I can’t keep up with him.” Katie was forced to quit her job as she was declared disabled in January 2018 – she has become ‘stuck’ in her home. She has also developed lymphedema ‒ a long-term condition where excess fluid collects in tissue, causing swelling. Katie is now fundraising R2-million to cover the costs of four rounds of liposuction to remove 20 litres of excess fat at a time from her legs. “If lipoedema is caught early enough it can be treated; unfortunately I have learnt the hard way,” she says. “This condition is debilitating and taking over my life. I am unable to sit down as my bum bruises and I experience excruciating pain when standing, which leads me to spend most of the day lying down. I want nothing more than to play with my children and return to work; I loved my job! It is also stealing my daughter’s childhood; she is like a mini-mom around the house and always checking up on me and offering a hand. I am sharing my story for all the other women who are suffering with this chronic disease and want to get their life back. I am in the process of starting a lipoedema awareness campaign to educate the medical community so it can be diagnosed and monitored early on.” IF you can help Ka e out, go to www.gofundme.com/f/ka ebaker

HE streets of Cape Town can be unforgiving, especially if you’re homeless. According to the Western Cape government’s 2019 statistics, there are about 4 862 homeless people in the greater Cape Town area. Cape-based Ladles Of Love is helping feed these souls. The volunteerrun soup kitchen and feeding programme provides over 12 000 healthy meals to the homeless a month. They also distribute soup to struggling schools, students and communities at various locations around the Mother City. Ladles Of Love began when Zimbabwean-born Danny Diliberto was inspired to create a project to give back to society, as the result of attending a course through the Art Of Living foundation (AOL). “As part of the course, attendees were encouraged to head out into the streets of Cape Town to offer hot tea to homeless people. As a restaurateur, I decided instead to make use of my kitchen and cooked up a fresh pot of soup instead,” says Danny. “Walking the streets of Cape Town on my mission, I spotted a homeless individual walking along – the man was wrapped in a dirty duvet and was shouting and swearing as he went. I approached him to offer the soup, and in that instant I saw that such a simple gesture had great power. The man stopped his shouting, accepted the soup and thanked me before continuing on his way. I realised that I had the power to restore dignity, even for just a moment, to people who have lost their way – and so the soup kitchen was born.” With little knowledge of how to start a soup kitchen, Danny decided just to go for it and at the first soup kitchen on a chilly July evening in 2014 a small team of volunteers served 70 hot meals. That same kitchen now happens every single week, serving over 200 meals each time. “People really do rely on our soup kitchen and

WHILE the world is still obsessed with Frozen II, 2020 promises some exciting animated films as well. Pixar’s highlyanticipated film Onward features the voices of Marvel stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot. ONE of our favourite Hollywood couples will now be mixing pleasure with business, with Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas having scored themselves a brand-new Amazon series for an as-yetuntitled dance competition show, which they will produce. In a statement the couple say, “It’s inspired by the traditional Indian prewedding tradition called the sangeet. As per tradition, the families of the couple come together before the wedding ceremony to celebrate the upcoming nuptials. It usually involves singing and dancing; some choreographed some not.” Each episode will follow an engaged couple, their wedding party, friends and family as they prepare for the wedding and rehearse for their dance performances. Priyanka announced the news, saying, “At our wedding, both of our families came together to perform a sangeet. A performance (dance-off competition style) that celebrated our love story, one of the most unforgettable moments from a very special time in our lives.” She added, “@nickjonas and I are excited to announce a new, currently untitled project (we’re still working on it!!) that celebrates the love and magic that comes from friends and family that join together through music and dance the night before a wedding. It’s our #SangeetProject.”

It’ll be my daily, everyday life, which is actually on the go and always busy and filled with so much,” Boity says. “I am grateful to give my fans a platform where they can indulge a little bit more, because people were saying that they haven’t seen me on TV for so long. INTERVIEW BY EL BROIDE
Nasty C F
OR someone who’s already one the most prolific rappers in the South African hip-hop space, 2019 was Nasty C’s biggest year to date. His 2018 album Strings & Bling is still a major feature on streaming charts around the country, and with many performances under his belt the artist’s starpower just grows and grows. We had a chat with the rapper to get his thoughts on his place in the music space right now, as well as to find out what the new year might bring him.
Why do you think so many people around the country identify with your music? I think so many people relate to my music because most of it is very relatable and wavy. So many people can attach a personal story to my music and it’s that which helps my music stand out.
Your songwriting is exceptional. What stories do you set out to tell through your sound?
I want to tell my own stories. I think it’s important to share my experiences, both good and bad, through my music – and that’s something that has certainly played a part in the creation of Strings & Bling.
What inspired your brand-new single God Flow?
God Flow came to life because of the beat. The beat brought its own energy and ideas out of me and it was one of the songs that I created where I didn’t come with an idea or story – which makes it quite unique.
What, in your opinion, makes a fantastic live show?
There are so many different elements to this question but, for me, crowd interaction, a lot of energy and clear messaging in the songs you perform helps create the ultimate live
experience for your fans.
Why do you think festivals are so popular around the country?
Well, they bring out the ragers and the ragers are the ones that make live shows lit. It’s because these ragers don’t run out of energy and they stay in rage mode until the end because of the solid line-ups and it’s just a great time.
You’ve been nominated for international music awards at major ceremonies from the likes of BET and MTV Europe Music Awards. How does it feel getting that international recognition? It’s incredible. It feels great to know that I’m being recognised so far away from home and that the hard work that I have been putting into my music has been paying off.
What is the one piece of advice you would like to give up-andcoming rappers?
Never stop working on your craft, no matter what your situation looks like. When you stop working, you stop getting better and you instantly lessen your chances of making it big, widening, instead, the chances of you being stuck where you are. Keep hustling.
What does 2020 have in store for you?
I have a lot up my sleeve but you’re going to have to stick around to find out!

GHOST MATTHEW MOLE
MATTHEW MOLE’S third studio album Ghost shows a different, more upbeat side to the pop star. While his previous material was certainly alternative, on Ghost Matthew doesn’t shy away from the big drums and major chorus lines, and essentially tackles local pop head on in a way no act has done in years. The album, while more mainstream, is still personal. The central theme of the record is tackling fear, which is where the title Ghost comes in, but Matthew has obviously found a way to turn that fear into something positive, which makes for really great listening, and Ghost is one of Matthew’s best albums to date. COURAGE CELINE DION
COURAGE sees Canadian superstar Celine Dion step out of her comfort zone more than ever before, having been inspired by the direction pop music has taken over the past few years. She’s teamed up with an impressive list of writers and producers including Sia, David Guetta and Sam Smith, and delivers something unexpected. Her vocal talent remains unmatched and Celine gives an exceptional performance on every song. This album, while not perfect, will go down in history as a game-changing moment for Celine and will make her sound all the more accessible to a younger generation. El’s Favourite Track: Flying On My Own
SUNSETS & FULL MO THE SCRIPT
SUNSETS & FULL MOONS is Irish band The Script’s sixth album, and while they may no longer dominate mainstream, they’re still very popular, and one only needs to listen to this latest offering of theirs to see why. It’s definitely one of their strongest lyrically, and while they seemingly shy away from experimentation sonically, they have a superb way of telling stories through their music. With a nice variety of big ballads and stadium-sized anthems, the group continues to do what they do best on this nine-track project. It’s a little predictable, the album homes some incredible tracks. El’s Favourite Track: Run Through Walls
App-solutely Fabulous SLEEPBOT
WHETHER you think so or not, the reality is that you’re probably not getting enough sleep. To ensure that they’re are in bed on time and giving their body the break it deserves, many are turning to sleep tracking apps to see just how their body is reacting to sleep and if its getting enough. What SleepBot does is utilise motion and sound-tracking software to provide an in-depth analysis of your sleep cycle ‒ average sleep time, sleep debt, long-term trends, etc. ‒ and compiles detailed reports, giving you a deeper understanding of your sleep cycle in an easy-to-grasp way.
THE books you should have on your to-read list. UNSOLVED JAMES PATTERSON & DAVID ELLIS
IN the new thriller with James Patterson’s name to it we meet up with FBI agent Emmy Dockery again. She’s young and driven, and her unique skill at seeing connections others have missed has earned her an impressive string of arrests. However, a new case is brought into the department and has the entire FBI flabbergasted, since the victims all seem to have died by accident and apparently have nothing in common. Emmy believes this many deaths can’t be a coincidence, though, and she sets out to uncover the killer – who always seems to be one step ahead of her. This is a follow-on of the author’s Invisible novel and again delivers a world-class story at an exciting and breathtaking pace. The plot is brilliant and this book is another reminder of what an exceptional team these two writers make.
RUN AWAY HARLAN COBAN
HERE’S the scenario: You’ve tried your best to raise your daughter but she gets swallowed up by the harrowing world of drugs and is with an abusive boyfriend. She’s run away and she’s made it pretty clear that she doesn’t want to be found. Then, by chance, you see her busking in New York’s Central Park. However, this is certainly not the girl you remember. As a mother, you approach her and beg her to come home but she runs. You follow her and realise that her world is darker than you ever thought possible – a world where criminal gangs rule, where drugs are the main currency, and murder is commonplace. Coben is a brilliant writer and his talent is on full display in this. There are twists and turns on almost every page and he manages to keep the reader on the edge of their seat until the very end.
NOTHING VENTURED JEFFERY ARCHER
WILLIAM WARWICK has always wanted to be a detective and after graduating from university embarks on his exciting new career path. He begins under the watchful eye of Constable Fred Yates and eventually moves on to his first high-profile case as a detective in Scotland Yard’s Art and Antiques squad, investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting from the Fitzmolean Museum. There, he meets Beth – but, as William finds out, Beth has a secret of her own she’s been hiding. The first in a brand new series in the style of the Clifton Chronicles, Archer delivers a thouroughly engaging tale ‒ not a detective story, but a story about a detective.

Every le er of the alphabet is used (you might nd it useful to cross out the le ers located by the grid as you nd them) and each le er has its own number. In this puzzle ‘15’ has the le er ‘B’ so a useful start is to insert ‘B’ in all the boxes that contain the number ‘15’. Vowels appear at least once in a word but le ers such as ‘X’ and ‘Z’ are few.

DETAILS the family doesn’t want you to know...

KATE’S SECRET HOBBY
KATE MIDDLETON is the epitome of sophistication. She is dressed to the nines at every public event and handles herself with grace and humility. However, even princesses have a wild side. Kate is obsessed with pole dancing and has grown quite fond of her new hobby. “She agreed to have lessons as a bit of a laugh,” says one of Kate’s former bodyguards. “She was so nervous about being seen or recognised, she used to wear a scarf around her head as a disguise. But she loved it! She says it was great exercise and she told me that a woman should always have secret talents up her sleeve.”
HEN you’re part of the British royal family, you can’t do anything without constant protection. The Royal Protection Branch is tasked with ensuring that the family is kept safe and, as such, has seen some pretty interesting things inside the palace. “Royals show you only what they want the public to see; it’s highly controlled,” says one ex-RPB officer. “We see what they don’t want you to see, and it can get q e shocking!” Here former members of the RPB spill the beans.
BEING a member of the royal family means absolutely NO tattoos! However, that hasn’t stopped the family’s wild child, Prince Harry, from making an alternative plan – he gets small, temporary tattoos! “His favourite is a black rhino,” says a former guard. It’s no secret that Harry has passion for the animals and has visited Africa countless times in a bid to help restore the dwindling rhino numbers. “He’ll wear that at the top of his [butt]! If he’s going out with his military mates, he’ll also sport his brigade emblem from Afghanistan.”
BAD BOSS MEGHAN
WHILE she’s the newest face in the British royal family (baby Archie aside), Meghan already has a dirty reputation within the palace walls, with many of the staff calling her their meanest boss. “She is very particular about everything in her life, especially her son Archie,” a former nanny says. “She has a long list of rules that everyone is expected to follow and rarely lets anyone be alone with Archie.” Meghan’s overbearing behaviour keeps her employees constantly on edge – and it’s left a sour taste in the mouths of many. “A lot of the staff are overworked and exhausted. She just has no concept of how to be a boss.”
WILLS GOES UNDERCOVER
THE one thing that Prince William learnt from his late mom, Princess Diana, is the gift of giving. In fact, the prince believes it’s one of the most important things he can do with his power and often finds himself handing out food at a soup kitchen. However, to keep away from the cameras, he dons a wig and glasses. “William loves helping people, but he doesn’t like the attention,” one of his guards says. “This way he can do his bit without the cameras or the press. We have to watch him from a distance, but no one has ever recognised him. I wonder what they’d think if they knew their future king was serving dinner.”

THE QUEEN’S LATENIGHT SNACKS
GEORGE IS SELFIE OBSESSED!
THE kids of today are obsessed with technology and, royal kids are no exception. Insiders tell us that George is obsessed with smartphones and loves taking selfies. “He thinks it’s hilarious to steal Kate’s iPhone and loves taking selfies,” a palace insider tells us. And while George is the definition of cuteness, he’s got a dark side to him as well. “George is an adorable child but when he’s in a bad mood, he’ll throw a tantrum and refuse to do his homework,” a royal nanny says. However, his mischievous side can also be quite cute. “Harry got him a joke set, and he’s been leaving whoopee cushions around ever since. He giggles until he cries when someone sits down on one,” one of the guards says. Sounds like Kate and Wills have quite the handful with George!
CHARLES AND CAMILLA’S ROMANTIC EVENINGS
THE one thing Prince Charles and Camilla love doing is looking through old photographs of themselves and revisiting their love story. “Camilla likes making jokes about how she got everything she ever wanted simply by being patient and letting the universe bring her and Charles together,” one of the former guards says. “She can get a little smug. William and Harry would be deeply offended if they knew about it.”
WHEN you have a chef on call, you would expect that the queen would just call up the kitchen and request the chef to fix her something to eat. But, just like us, the queen also has some fast food cravings late at night. Her favourite? A Big Mac, strawberry milkshake and an apple pie from McDonalds! “Then she does what we all do: eats it in the car,” says a guard. “We drive around for about 20 minutes so she can finish before we return to the palace.” Insiders reveal that Queen Elizabeth II is also so much funnier than we give her credit for – and she loves making her guests laugh with impressions. “She has a wicked sense of humour and is a great mimic – she can do all accents, including mine!” Princess Diana’s ex-butler Paul Burrell says. “She can enthral the household with a perfect accent, whether it be from Scotland or the East End of London.”
