I want to make it easier for them every two years. Last year, we had to move her halfway through her GCSE’s, and we’ll have to do the same for her A-Levels. We’re lucky that Maddison is so strong, but it doesn’t make it any easier for her. As I watch Maddison grow and see her daily struggles, I adapt the support we offer. We’re a little charity, but we have a huge heart. We don’t always know when Tony’s next mission will be and when he’s out on the ground we’re so proud of him, but we miss him madly. Maddison knows how lucky she is to still have both her parents, but I’ve seen first-hand the struggles that military children face. So that’s why I set up Little Troopers, to try and make dayto-day life a little easier for each and every one of them.

REAL LIFE

Lynne Baird, 62, from Birmingham, is determined to keep her son’s memory alive...

Dear Dan,

I

remember that day you were born in August 1990 like it was yesterday. In fact, I remember when you and your seven siblings Elly, 46, Jamie, 35, Thomas, 34, Michael, 33, Kerry, 30, Rory, 27, and Holly, 26, were all born. They are some of the proudest days of my life. You in particular were such a kind and loving young boy. It’s probably those wonderful qualities that attracted your long-term girlfriend Gemma to you at just nine-years-old. You were inseparable and you had one of the strongest forms of love I’ve ever seen. So it was no surprise that we all knew you were going to get married one day. You had the perfect life together, but working on constructions, it would be a while before you tied the knot. But then, on 7 July 2017, you got amazing news. ‘Mum, they offered me the job on the spot!’ you said, bursting into the kitchen after your interview with Jaguar Land Rover. ‘Oh Son! That’s great news,’ I beamed with absolute pride. ‘Me and Gemma can finally start planning our wedding,’ you smiled. ‘By September, we should be able to put a mortgage down, too.’ You had it all figured out. Due to your work, you were constantly back and forth – staying at home and at Gemma’s – so you couldn’t wait to get a place for just the two of

you together. You were so happy tha day – probably the happiest I’d seen you in a long time. Then, at 7.30pm, you came downstairs in your shorts and t-shirt, ready for the gym. ‘I’m staying at Gemma’s tonight,’ you told me. ‘I’ll see you later.’ Your love was Me and your dad, unbreakable Gerard, were so proud. All our children were now off doing their own thing and living their own lives – we’d even been gifted with 11 grandchildren. Then, the doctor roke the news I a ready knew. ‘I’m afraid Daniel has passed away. He was stabbed just after 4am,’ we were told. When those words were uttered, the family room broke into screams and wailing, but I just stood there, frozen. I was in complete disbelief and I almost convinced myself that it was a dream. ‘Wake up,’ I kept saying to myself, but it wasn’t a dream Dan, you were gone, and we were too late. Once I came out of my trance, I asked the doctors if we could see you, but they didn’t say anything. You were no longer my son Dan, you were evidence in a murder investigation.

e didn t understand what had happened, but the following day, the police filled us in. ‘It looks like Dan and his friends were involved in an altercation with another group of boys,’ the officer told us. ‘When Dan and his friends left the Forge Tavern, the other group of boys were waiting for them and launched an attack. ‘Dan was stabbed in the heart with what looked like a Rambo-style knife. ‘He was rushed to hospital, but he bled to death.’ I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, Dan. I didn’t even know you’d gone out that night. You were 26-years-old, I had no control over your social life, but I thought you were just staying at Gemma’s. You must have decided to go and celebrate your job. Outside the hospital, your brother Tom, who’s a doctor, told me that if you’d had pressure compressed, you might have survived. ‘The first three to five minutes are crucial, with no pressure, he just bled to death, Mum,’ he told me. The thought that you could have survived was unbearable. For the next few weeks, I couldn’t leave the house. I was a complete wreck I just expected you to walk through the door, and soon, I started having panic attacks. Gemma was devastated, too. Everyone was. All I wanted was to hear your heavy feet running down the stairs 8

kitchen, but you never did and you never would again. So, to keep myself busy and distracted, I started looking into pressure compacts. It turned out, in the US, they have these bleed control kits in schools and public areas. They seemed to be working, but when I looked, there was nothing like it in the UK. ‘I have to do something about this,’ I told your dad. So, I started looking at different things that could help prevent significant bleeding and I discovered that triangular bandages were the best thing for it. Dan, I put all my energy into these kits. I even got a company to put together a prototype for me. For a while it took my mind off things, but 10 weeks after you left us, your body was finally released from evidence, Dan. ‘He’s not fit for viewing, the coffin will have to be sealed,’ the funeral director told us. I never

waltzing towards your friend’s car in your gym kit. Your funeral on 15 September was particularly hard, Dan. But so many people came. Gosh! I had no idea you were so popular! Following your funeral, I didn’t know what to do. The police still hadn’t caught your killer, so I had to keep myself busy – before I went insane. So, I threw myself into the kits. I started campaigning on social media, telling people about them. Soon, the local newspaper and radio heard about our story Dan and I was interviewed by lots of people. Everyone wanted me to talk about you! And in February 2018, I officially launched the Daniel Baird Foundation. Of course, your dad and siblings were helping me, but

I miss you more every day everyone deals with your death differently, Dan. This was my way of coping with it all. Then, in the August, over a year after your passing, police had finally charged a man for your murder. 24-year-old Carlton Donaldson – he had a career in criminal activity. It was a big step towards justice and a trial was set for January 2019. I knew that would be hard, so once again, I threw myself into campaigning and that’s when I was invited onto Radio 4’s Today Programme. Then, almost the second I walked out of the studio, I got a phone call, Dan. It was someone from Birmingham City Council. ‘We want you to come in for a meeting,’ the woman told me. I couldn’t believe it, Dan! And soon, Birmingham City Council had bought the Bleed Control Kits! In the June, the kits were aunched in Birmingham pubs and restaurants. And then came even better news. West Midlands Ambulance Service wanted hem, too! I worked with Executive Director, Anthony Marsh to reate suitable kits together. They include dressings, auze bandages and ourniquets, along with a

She misses you like mad, but just like some of your siblings, she’s having therapy to help her get through. I think what hurts her the most is that she should have been planning your wedding, instead, she had to help plan your funeral. It’s been over two-years since you were taken from us Dan, and it never gets easier. In fact, I miss you more every day, darling. But I think you’ll be proud of me. The Bleed Control Kits were launched in London by City of London Police in November last year and they’ve saved someone’s life! The victim

was involved in a violent attack and the kit helped save him. They’re now in pubs, restaurants and nighttime venues in the capital, as well as Birmingham. Since losing you, I never want another family to go through what we did. It broke us, Dan. For a while, your sister Kerry slept next to your ashes. It hasn’t been easy Dan, but we set the foundation up in your name to keep your memory alive. We were even one of the winners of the Giff Gaff Community Project last year. You were an innocent victim that night and how I wish you’d never gone out. But I promise you, we’ll stay strong Dan and we’ll protect Gemma for you. I love you my darling. Sleep tight.

All my love, Mum xx

O L E B U ‘YO O N E M TO Gemma Dunn, 40, f was excited to start a new job ter abroad. But things took a sinis turn when she arrived…

WORDS BY HOLLY SAWYER AND LAEA MARSHALL PHOTOS: SWNS

A

s my brother Andrew, 30, drove me to the airport, I was grinning in anticipation for my new adventure. I was 32, and on my way to Beijing, China, to start a teaching job abroad. Working as an accountant, I’d been stagnating at home. Waiting for ‘something’ to happen, but not doing anything to tempt it. So that’s when I came up with the idea of working my way around the world. I wanted to understand what it was like to live and breathe another culture. So, in September 2011, I signed up to an online Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course with the aim to get qualified and travel my way around different countries. I’d never been to China before, and the culture seemed like no other. There was something so mystical about the Orient that I wanted to explore. After making my decision, I had a phone interview with an English-based company to do a teacher training internship in China for six months. It was a fully supported internship, and I would be staying with a fellow English

teacher who would also be working at the same school. What could go wrong? I thought to myself. It seemed safe and I was assured of a high level of in-country support, an introduction to the city and to the job, and a home with a colleague close to the school. I jetted off in February 2012, and 10 long hours later, I touched down in Beijing at around 11am. I was expecting to be met by a representative of the school called Will, but instead I saw a Chinese lady holding a sign with my name on. Will had mentioned a lady called Louise who was a partner of the school and he had said she would be taking me to some temporary accommodation for a couple of nights, so I assumed this was her and followed her out of the airport. I was taken back to Louise’s apartment, where she showed me to my room, took my passport away and locked it in a safe. Then she left me with no water or keys. I was so confused. I was terrified – and stuck. ‘What should I expect over the next few days?’ I asked as Louise walked out. ‘Later,’ she said sternly. ‘What’s that supposed to

Because Louise had given me a mobile phone, it meant I could contact the London agency that I’d applied for the job through. ‘You need to get me the hell out of here,’ I demanded. ‘I will exploit this agency for the con artists you are if you don’t work fast. I’m sure the embassy won’t be too happy about this either.’ This did the trick – they hastily got my passport back by buying me back from Louise, and things started looking up. I wasn’t going to go down without a fight, and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel of the horrific ordeal. After what seemed like an endless cycle of suspicious job interviews, the agency severed all ties with me, meaning I was free to do what I wanted. I could finally breathe again as a free woman, and I could contact my family again for the first time since I had arrived. Meanwhile, I managed to find accommodation in a hotel in downtown Beijing. At last, for the first time in weeks, the upside of my stay in China began. I was way too scared to go back to England and tell people of the embarrassing trap I’d got myself into, so instead I decided to actually find a

teaching course out there which was real. I quickly found a group of mates who were all looking for teaching jobs together, and we all found ourselves learning TEFL in the proper way it should be done. I completed the month-long course, learning basic Mandarin and the skills to teach English. And finally, I got a job teaching English at a school. But I was later dealt another blow when I discovered that the visa I had was a visitor’s visa, meaning I wasn’t meant to be earning money at all. I quit my teaching job, and just 24 hours later, the police raided the school. I’d left just on time. Knowing I was at risk of being deported or going to jail, I went into hiding. Two weeks later, my parents – Lesley and Stuart, now both 70 – came to help me out. I was so grateful. And four months later, I finally got out of China. I spent the next two years travelling around Asia, but this time with people who didn’t want me to count their money or meet strange men in alleys. I also got an accountancy job in Singapore for a while to earn some money. I returned to the UK in 2013, glad to be back on home soil. I still have the travel bug, but it’s safe to say, I’ll be more careful from now on. 11

I appreciate how hard this can be, and I understand how difficult it is to process the situation, especially when you can’t see things from someone else’s point of view. You could explain to him why you would like to know and how it would help you. Maybe he doesn’t want to hurt you any more than necessary. The only thing you can control is how you let it affect you, by how you think, feel and behave –these skills do take practice. You will not feel like this forever. I am sure

your imagination is running wild with you, and this is not helpful – be kind to yourself. Take one step at a time, allowing yourself time to adjust in this transition. Can you take up some hobbies or spend time doing things you liked before you were married? You do not have to go through this on your own – reach out to friends and family for support.

I’m sure this must’ve been upsetting for you, and I can see how awkward you must have felt. As your relationship is new, there will be a period of time for his parents to adjust to a new girlfriend. Give them a chance to get to know you and I’m sure they’ll adore you. All his parents want is to see their son happy. I would explain to your boyfriend how you felt, as it is important you feel valued in your relationship. I don’t think you are being petty – you are entitled to express your feelings, especially to your boyfriend. You can’t control what they do or say, but you are in control of your own feelings, so try not to dwell on the situation and focus on having fun with your boyfriend instead.

Relationships with our siblings can be quite tricky to navigate, even as adults. I think that deep down, your sister really wants to be as good as you, however from what you have explained, the way she has gone about it has caused you upset. This behavior would indicate that she wants to be like you and just as good as you, and this is only done by someone who admires you. Take it as a compliment and look at the situation in a different way. How can you spend more quality time with your sister doing things that you both enjoy? Switching to a pl based diet will ca changes in your digestive system while your body adapts to this new way of eating. If you’re suffering from an upset stomach, bloating, or gas there’s no need to go back to a meat and dairy diet as these symptoms should subside once your digestive system has adjusted to it. ach

The virus that causes verrucas, known as the human papillomavirus (HPV), can linger in the body for a number of years before it completely disappears. This is why you may get recurrent verruca infections. You’re also more likely to get recurrent infections such as this if you have a weakened immune system. Verrucas are particularly common in children as their immune systems are not fully developed, and they’re less likely to take care around the spread of the virus. 4 WAYS TO... dryskin If you suffer from dry skin during the winter months, then you’re not alone. For many of us the cold weather can leave our skin feeling red, rough and often itchy. The experts at Lotil have put together their top tips on how to help you banish your dry skin.

1

Limit yourself to one five to 10-minute shower or bath a day. Any more than that may strip away much of the skin’s oily layer and cause it to lose moisture. Only use lukewarm water on your skin and not hot, which can wash away natural oils. Never scratch. Most of the time a moisturiser can control and help the itch. You can also use a cold compress to relieve itchy spots. Use a thick moisturiser. In general, the thicker and greasier the moisturiser, the more effective it will be. Try using a thick cream like Lotil to help the skin rapidly rehydrate.

It caused flu-like symptoms and extreme tiredness. ‘My hiking!’ I exclaimed. Suddenly it all made sense. While I had no recollection of being bitten, I realised that a tick must have latched onto me while walking through the desert all those years ago. I’d contracted this disease without even knowing it. Back in the UK, I explained my diagnosis to my GP. He agreed, but said that unfortunately, there was not much he could do about it. ‘There’s no real cure,’ he explained. ‘But it usually sorts itself out in a few years.’ He suggested antibiotics, but

housands of people with mental health problems are being left waiting for months for NHS help, a new investigation has revealed. Last year alone, 300,000 patients who qualified for talking therapy spent at least a month on the ‘hidden’ waiting list. The patients had all been to their first appointment which meant they’d been counted as having started treatment, although the treatment doesn’t start until the second appointment. The wait for a second session could last for months, with the NHS blaming the rising number of patients for why it’s taking so long.

alking into the local community hall, I could hear the rock music thumping. I’d read about Rockfit in a ocal magazine, and in June ast year I decided it was time o give it a shot. Standing at the back of the class, I attempted to join in. Flinging my arms in the air, I felt so out of place. The choreographer caught my eye and smiled. Oh no, was she being nice or mirking? After 10 minutes of high intensity, we had a break. ‘Welcome to the class, love!’ one lady said. ‘Is this your first time?’ ‘Yeah it is!’ I replied. ‘I love the music but I feel like I really stand out,’ I said. ‘Don’t be silly, no-one is watching you,’ she promised. As the music started again, I was beginning to get to know the moves. Throwing my hands in the air, I let the endorphins rush through my body. After the hour was up, I was a sweaty mess. My healthy lifestyle has even improved my work life. years,’ he said. Two years?! I thought, utterly devastated. But while doctors did everything they could to reduce the pain, over the next few years, it only got worse. Not only was my knee throbbing, but it was also burning up. Sometimes it was as if someone had tied burning barbed wire around my leg and pulled it tight. I always had a baseline level of pain – it was never not there – but anything could trigger it to become unbearable. I couldn’t have a shower without breaking down, as the drops of water against my skin would leave me in agony. Even clothing would hurt, and I had to wear baggy trousers that wouldn’t chafe against my skin. ‘Why is this happening to me?’ I’d sob to Mum, desperate

There were days when I just wouldn’t get out of bed. It felt as if the constant pain was driving me mad. Desperate for help, I searched online and soon found CRPS support groups. I got chatting with other sufferers around the world, and we were soon sharing coping mechanisms, or sometimes just sharing our misery. One thing that was often talked about was amputation. Many people had had their arms or legs chopped off – simply to get rid of their pain for good. It made me think. I knew it was a huge decision to make – chopping off a limb was not to be taken lightly. But by January 2019, I’d made up my mind. ‘I want to have my leg chopped off,’ I told my parents. They were taken aback. Seeing their daughter’s leg being chopped off must have

been their worst nightmare, but after talking about it, they understood more. That March, I spoke to my pain consultant about my wishes to amputate. He initially said no, as it went against UK guidelines. The NHS didn’t advise amputation for CRPS sufferers – there was a risk it could make the pain worse. But I had nothing left to lose. How much worse can it acutally get? I thought. Thankfully, my consultant was willing to talk about it, and that May, I had a meeting with him and a physiotherapist. We were joined by a surgeon who said he’d be willing to carry out the procedure. But I had to convince him. ‘I have no quality of life,’ I told him. ‘My leg is nonfunctional, and by having it amputated, at least I’ll be able to manage the situation.’ Thankfully, he d ‘I can see this i option,’ he said. And finally, th in sight. For the next fo months, I had extensive physiotherapy to prepare for the operation. Leading up to my op, I had no second thoughts about losing my leg. People kept asking me if I was sure. ‘You’re

only 22,’ they’d say. ‘Yes, but I’ve been in pain since I was 16,’ I’d reply. ‘I have to do this.’ Finally, on 3 September, the day of the surgery arrived. After hugging my teary parents, I was wheeled down to theatre At Princess Grace Hospital in Marylebone, with no second thoughts at all. And just over two hours later, I was waking up. Shining a light in my eyes, a doctor asked me if I knew what my name was. I realised I only had one answer to that question… ‘I’m not in pain!’ I cried. For the first time in six years, I was pain free, and I just couldn’t believe it. Looking down, there was a big gap in the bed where my leg should have been. The amputation had been a success, and just a week later, I was allowed home. Since then, my recovery has been miraculous. I’m learning to walk again, and I’m completely pain free. I’m also due to get a prosthetic leg fitted soon. As for kayaking, I do plan on getting back on the river, but only recreationally. Instead of competing, I’ve instead set my sights on the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. There’s a para-triathlon which I’d love to take part in – k, as I ee

’ve always believed that the secret to a happy life is not to take it too seriously. And when it comes to my family, that’s what gets us through every day. You see, all three of my kids have autism. When I met my partner Kenny, now 43, back in 2005, it was love at first sight. We got together pretty quickly and couldn’t wait to start a family together. Our dreams came true the following year when I fell pregnant. Our son Stanley was born on 25 June 2007, a perfect little bundle of joy. ‘He’s gorgeous,’ Kenny smiled proudly. We quickly adapted to life as a family of three, and Stanley was a perfect baby – so incredibly quiet. In 2008 I fell pregnant with our secon through m and back wait for o to grow. Our dau born on 3 and just li brother, s a quiet ba But not for long. At just weeks old would sta be sick ev time I fed

and she wasn’t afraid to show us how she felt, either – screaming her head off whenever she got the chance. As a toddler, she was very stressed out. Strapping her in her car seat to take her out shopping, Lola would panic and only stop screaming when I released her. She hated being confined. I loved dressing her up in pretty dresses, too, but Lola hated wearing clothes, would rip them off as soon as she could. Poor Stanley had taken a back seat for his little sister. He’d become quieter than usual, would sometimes barely speak at all. ‘I feel like I’m neglecting him,’ I confessed to Kenny, feeling so guilty. But over time, Lola needed me more and more.

reasoned that she was autistic. She had all the signs – difficulty processing her emotions and overreacting to small changes in her routine. It seemed like a simple explanation to me, but getting a diagno was incredibly difficult. Every time I took Lol doctor, she’d be so well behaved – as if she knew we were trying to do! Back home, she’d be back to her usual self, screaming uncontrollably. The doctor arranged for a health visitor to assess Lola for a period of six months, and in the meantime, all we could do was wait. Then, in December 2011, I fell pregnant again. And while the pregnancy was pretty straightforward, so much changed for us in the ith h

the doctor was seeing what I was seeing, and at three years old, Lola was finally diagnosed with autism. It was such a relief to have the diagnosis. ‘We need to learn how to help her the best we can,’ I said to Kenny that night. So I signed up to a parenting course to learn all I could about raising a child with autism. But while the course was helpful with Lola, it revealed something more surprising. Going over my notes one evening, I made a realisation. All the signs of autism – avoiding eye contact, delayed speech and a reliance on routines and patterns – described Stanley exactly. ‘I think Stanley is autistic, too,’ I said to Kenny. And I was right. Just four months after Lola was diagnosed, it was confirmed that Stanley also had autism. I felt so guilty – while all the

Then, later that year, when I was heavily pregnant, we were dealt yet another blow. One morning, Kenny fell off his scooter, breaking his collarbone in the process. While being treated for that, he was diagnosed with something called X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare condition which affects his spinal cord. It meant he’d

be in pain all the time, have terrible back pain and constant pins and needles in his legs. Pretty soon he was struggling to even get out of bed and had to rely on a mobility scooter to get around. It certainly made life more difficult, but Kenny never once complained. On 2 September that year, I gave birth to our third child, Connie-Mai. And for the first few months of her life, she was so quiet – she would I knew r had autism And as a would car teddies in started rep

suspicions were confirmed. And just like her siblings, she was exceptionally clever. Finally, in 2017, at five years old, ConnieMai was officially diagnosed with autism. That same year, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disease which damages the thyroid gland. It means I’m tired all the time, my hair falls out, and I can often get very poorly. ‘We’re quite the family!’ Kenny joked. And we really are. I’m not sure how rare t is to have three hildren with autism, but I know that we’re very special. Stanley, now 12, is now on medication for ADHD, but is such a olite, kind little boy. He’s honest and unny, and there’s not a ad bone in his body. Lola, now 10, is also now taking medication for ADHD. She loves anything messy and is such a joker. Taking after her dad, she loves playing pranks, and is all smiles when a fake spider has me in hysterics! Connie-Mai, now seven, isn’t on any medication at the moment, and is such an affectionate little girl. She loves cuddles and kisses with Mummy, and I’m more than happy to oblige. Last year, I got the idea to

about autism. And as Lola has the most rare form of autism out of all my kids, I decided to base the book on her life. And so Autism with Lola was created – a series of stories about Lola and her day-to-day experiences as a child living with autism. The book is aimed at kids, with the hopes of showing them that there’s nothing about autism that they need to be afraid of. In one of the stories, Lola feels scared that other kids will make fun of her. In the end, she makes friends, and teaches them that she’s just a normal little girl. I want to show children that while autistic kids might need a little help, they’re just normal kids they can be friends with. It also includes an expert section with an occupational therapist’s advice for teachers. I self-published in June 2019, and so far, the book has been a great success. Kenny and the kids love it, too, and Lola is so proud to have been my inspiration. But to be honest, all my kids are an inspiration. And so is Kenny. Despite his condition, he stops at nothing to help take care of the kids and works so hard to provide for us. You may think we’re an unlucky family, but to me, we couldn’t be luckier. All my kids are incredible, and I wouldn’t change them for the world. Every family has its own challenges, and we’re no different. We are who we are, and the tant thing is that ppy.

Death In Paradise, BBC One

The ninth series of the awardwinning crime drama is back on our screens, with plenty more mystery in the Caribbean. It kicks off with a New Year’s Eve party where one of the guests ends up dead. D.I Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon), along with his trusted team of D.S. Madeleine Dumas (Aude Legastelois-Bidé), Officer JP Hooper (Tobi Bakare) and Officer Ruby Patterson (Shyko Amos), are quickly on the scene, but are welcomed by some inconclusive CCTV footage and an eerie message left by a perpetrator in a devil mask. There’s even a guest appearance from Adrian Edmondson.

David Tennant stars in this drama about a small community who are rocked by a shocking crime. But unlike his Broadchurch role, Tennant’s character is at the very centre of the mystery. Did he actually murder his own family? He plays Tom, a well-liked GP living in a small Scottish village with his teacher wife Kate (Anna Madeley) and their young daughters. They seem to have a perfect life, then a tragic house fire shatters the community and suspicion falls on Tom. The four-part series is written by Daisy Coulam, the woman behind ITV’s Grantchester.

what I do or try, my mascara always smudges on my under eye. How can I stop his? Lynne, Pembrokeshire

Mascara smudging can be very annoying. A top tip is to use a waterproof mascara on your bottom lashes. This will help retain transfer of product. You can also use a small makeup brush with some eyeshadow and buff underneath the eye area to create a soft smokey feel. This will help cover any later smudging and give you a glam look.

Using a primer will help keep the oil at bay, which in turn will make the foundation perform better. A matte texture primer will always work best on oily skin. When choosing foundation look for an oil free product. A handy product to keep in your bag is blotting strips. You can use these throughout the day, and they will remove any oil without taking away your makeup. I suffer with red skin around my nose and down to my cheeks. As the conflict continued, Kevon’s anger grew more and more, and soon, he became aggressiv towards his mother. Worried that the fight was about to turn physical, mumof-one Alexus jumped in. You start just as you mean to go on this week, by getting what you know needs to be done, sorted out. This may see close ones complaining and moaning more than usual, but keep your eye on the ball. You know you promised yourself you’d enter this year in control. Neptune helps you deal with a difficult family member and an important corner is turned.

You seem to be worried about time this week, but there’s really no need to be. Not all of the signs are feeling as energetic as you are at this time of year. It may well be a case of you doing what you can as an individual, until others gather their energies again. Use this Wednesday to get that younger person back on board with your upcoming plans. It really can make all the difference.

Stop worrying about things which aren’t in your control. You are turning an opportunity into a negative experience. Do what you can, with what you have, until help comes along. It will be sooner than you’d hoped! Friends want to help and can prove their loyalty, if you’d let them. Family prove costly, but I think you’d pay double to get a certain person off your back.

Try to remember the names of those you meet and deal with in the days ahead. You may not realise it just yet, but you will need to recall them at a later date. That lack of energy you had over the Christmas period is replaced by one of excitement and focus. Don’t forget to keep those important appointments you’ve made. Changing them could cost you your good reputation.

I know you’re frightened by all that’s ahead, but trust me when I say, that you should actually be excited about it. Time you spend going over figures and financial affairs can help you to have a more flexible six weeks ahead. A favour you are asked is more complex than others are saying. Do your research before committing. It can save you time and money if you do.

You know now that you are facing the right direction, you just need to remember to keep walking forward, Virgo. You have been allowing those who you and I both know are not good influences to deter you from your path. Don’t let this happen. Time spent with those you’ve known for years helps you feel more like you again. Embrace such opportunities. This is your time.

If you have a good idea, you have to believe in yourself, or no one else will. From Friday, you start to speak more truths about what’s going on. This begins a time of admissions from both you and your close ones. Those problems you have been wanting to solve at last face solutions. Try to give family the support they need this month while they adapt to an important change in the dynamics in their abode.

When you make up your mind, there’s no stopping you. Remember, it’s better to be yourself than to try and be some version of what you think the other person wants. No one is with a Scorpio for a predictable life. The sooner you embrace your instinctive traits, the better. Arrangements are forced on you personally. Do it for the person you say you support.

Believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see this week. I can see that you’ve been heavily influenced by half truths in the last few days. Stop and ask yourself if you really ‘need’ to be involved in what is occurring right now. Make more time for you. It’s how you reach your best decisions in life. An influx of money makes your weekend more flexible.

Make it your mission to mix with only positive people from here on in. I would not say you’ve been encouraging negative influences, but you haven’t exactly been pushing them away, either. Start as you mean to go on this week, and organise your life around you. Others will have more respect for you if you do. More expense is indicated in the home. Prepare your finances.

Sadly, not all relationships are equal, and I see from your stars that you seem to have allowed someone to manipulate you into a situation you are not entirely comfortable with. Luckily for you, Aquarius, Saturn is on hand to help you work out how to break free from this awkward situation. You also take important steps this week to make your home your home. I like this new you. Embrace it.

You have been trying to keep quiet about something, but right now, silence is only to their benefit, not to yours. Use this week to think about what the right thing is to do, for your own self respect and dignity. I see that what occurs this week will shape you for many years to come. Try to work on believing in your rights, Pisces. You have more than you think, my friend.

itting on a picnic blanket in the park, I soaked up the sun. ‘What should we do for our anniversary?’ I asked my boyfriend Liam, 21. ‘We’ll think of something,’ he said, tucking into the food. It was August 2013, and the afternoon before our big fiveyear anniversary. We were on our favourite kind of date – a picnic and walk in our local country park. Just before I started to pack up, Liam asked me a very important question… ‘Imogen, will you marry me?’ he smiled, holding out a glistening ring. ‘Yes!’ I screamed, in complete shock. Over the moon, I couldn’t wait to tell my family when we got home. But no-one was there. ‘Get changed, we’re going out!’ Liam said. Travelling to Liam’s parents’ home, I had no idea what I was about to walk into. ‘Surprise!’ everyone said. My family and friends had all come together to celebrate our engagement. ‘Imagine if I’d have said no!’ I laughed to Liam. We started planning our wedding, and I found the most beautiful dress for £500 in a bridal warehouse. ‘It’s perfect!’ I told my sister and maid of honour, Leah, now 26. On 30 August 2016, we became Mr and Mrs Hopkins in a converted chapel. Walking down the aisle, I

At home, Liam and I shed and hung my ding dress on the line. ‘What are you going to do with it now?’ Liam asked, looking at the stained gown. ‘I’ve got an idea,’ I told him. My friend makes beautiful teddy bears, so I asked her for a small favour. ‘I can give it a go,’ she said. Using the delicate beading and lace, she created a lovely little bear out of my wedding dress material. Soon after our first anniversary, I fell pregnant with a baby girl. On 4 August 2017, our daughter Phoebe was born. ‘This is my wedding dress,’ I told Phoebe, now two, showing her the bear. I love the idea of passing on something to Phoebe that was a part of our special day. Our trashed wedding dress photos are now framed around the house, and our bear sits in Phoebe’s nursery. We will treasure our crazy wedding memories forever.
