This week we’re... loving
Hello & WELCOME
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Sally sees them announcing that Meghan is pregnant with their second child in 2020. When it comes to their role within the royal family, Sally adds that ‘the Queen will express her concern about their obvious unhappiness’.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Having had a rift with his brother Harry in 2019, ‘William will ensure he is seen more with Harry and their children will be photographed together to show the world that both brothers are unified,’ according to Sally. On top of this, the psychic says that ‘William and Kate will take on a bigger role from the Queen with visits abroad, and the Queen will honour both of them for this.’
2020 Celebrity Louise Redknapp Having been single since she split from Jamie Redknapp in 2017, Louise will meet a new love in 2020. Sally says this mystery man is ‘in the music industry and they have a lot in common’, and while ‘her children are happy for her, Jamie will be disgruntled, even though he will be seen with a new lady too’. Career-wise, Louise will release another album and also ‘say yes to a West End role’.
Holly Willoughby
According to Sally, Holly isn’t going to be on This Morning as much next year, as ‘she’ll gently pull away from a full-time position, allowing her more time to spend on other TV shows, a new clothing range and a book’. The TV presenter will even get a new show that’s been written specifically for her ‘and will propel her into a primetime evening audience’. Lucky Holly!

Celebrity NEWS
Piers Morgan It seems 2020 doesn’t see much change for Piers, as ‘he’ll find himself in hot water to do with comments made concerning the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which he’ll have to retract and, in his own way, apologise to them’. On a brighter note, Piers ‘will accept a huge TV deal in the States and rethink his whole life and career in UK’. There’ll be a lot of people happy with that news…
Coleen Nolan Sally says that, despite staying single to focus on her family and friends, 2020 sees Coleen a lot happier as she ‘continues to thrive with new drive and positivity with her career and personal life’. Coleen’s biggest change is that she’s going to move home, ‘as she wants to clear her life from old memories’.
predictions Celebrity psychic Sally Morgan predicts what next year could have in store for these famous facesÉ Paul Hollywood His love life was extremely rocky in 2019, and it seems nothing changes for Paul next year, as ‘his two exes, Alex Hollywood and Summer MonteysFullam both do kiss-and-tells’. However, this won’t affect Bake Off judge Paul too much, as he continues with the show and ‘will release two more best-selling cookbooks’.
Susanna Reid Susanna may have spent most of 2019 single after splitting from Steve Parish in April, but her love life is ‘set to become more fulfilling in 2020’, says Sally. However, her new relationship ‘may cause problems with her having to be in the studio so early’ for Good Morning Britain. Susanna’s also going to ‘front a weekend current affairs programme, and as this will be prerecorded it will allow her personal life to flourish’.
Simon Cowell
Having had a big shake-up of The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent in 2019, next year Simon will bring some ‘new TV shows and dispose of some of the well-known ones’. Luckily, however, ‘Simon will reap the rewards of difficult decisions.’ And when it comes to his personal life, Sally says that Simon ‘would love a brother or sister for his son Eric, but his partner Lauren is not of the same mind’.

‘Ruth’s life was turned
UPSIDE DOWN’
TV star Eamonn Holmes opens up about how wife Ruth is coping with her recent family tragedy
T

hey can often be found bickering with one another live on This Morning or teasing each other about their bad habits, but beneath their playful exterior Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford’s relationship is rock solid. Since Ruth’s sister tragically passed away in June, the couple have faced a challenging few months – but Eamonn admits, ‘We just have to get through,’ and praises his wife for being ‘absolutely incredible’ even in the face of adversity. And while many of us start the new year on a strict diet plan, Eamonn – who turned 60 in December – and Ruth, 59, aren’t fans of doing anything that might make January ‘miserable’. Instead, Eamonn is all about focusing on ‘selfprogression’ and ‘self-development’ as he heads into a new decade…
How has Ruth coped? Ruthie has been absolutely incredible, looking after her mother, tending to family things. She is absolutely incredible. I couldn’t speak more highly of her. She just is an amazing woman, an absolutely amazing person. She throws herself into her work. She still finds time, particularly for her mother, and her family and us and I just am in awe of her.
It’s fair to say that 2019 was a difficult year for you both... There has been a lot of difficulty in both our lives over the past year. There have been a lot of issues affecting us personally, which we just have to get through. The family need our help and support at this time. Ruth’s life was turned completely upside down when she lost her sister in June. It was a sudden death. It is still very raw. Very raw.
Will you and Ruth be embarking on any diets in the new year or a Dry January? No. Ruth tried doing Dry January once and was miserable and has said, ‘Never again.’ And I don’t drink. We don’t go in for diets at this time of year. I’m all for making New Year’s resolutions and improving my life, so I’m happy to look at learning new skills and

self-progression and selfdevelopment. For instance, if you walk a bit more, then that has to be good for you. I think we should always be on our toes as to how we can make ourselves better people. You turned 60 in December – does ageing phase you? My dad died at the age of 64 and that hangs over us all. You sort of think, ‘Will history repeat itself?’ So I do have this maudlin apprehension about how long’s left.
Do you still enjoy working together? Absolutely. We never know what is going to happen. I don’t know what Ruth is going to say and she doesn’t know what I am going to say or how we will both react. It is live TV and anything can happen.
Eamonn describes wife Ruth as ‘an amazing woman’
Do you watch any TV together? Unfortunately, we watch very little together but that is down to Ruth as she says I ask too many questions during the shows we are watching! I think we would be very good for Gogglebox. She usually banishes me to the sitting room to watch what I want to watch, and she is in the living room. Our tastes are very different.
‘I think we would be very good for Gogglebox’
Will you be doing another series of How The Other Half Lives again? It was lovely to do but it is a question of finding the time. A lot of things got shelved when Ruth’s sister died and she had to take time off.
Tell us about the podcast and how it is going? Really well. I am doing what I love, which is doing conversational-style interviewing, with some top names from the world of football, in a pub setting. Do you both enjoy socialising in pubs? We do. We live in Surrey and do go out for Sunday lunch, but I let Ruth make the decision as to where.
● Eamonn Holmes’ podcast, A Pint with Eamonn and the Gaffers, in association with Heineken, proud supporters of the great British pub, is available now.

What about cosmetic surgery – do you think you would ever have anything done? What would be the point? I think if you have a problem that can be fixed, then fine. A lot of TV presenters do go in for it and good on them. But I am not really sure what I would need done. I don’t have many wrinkles, and I am not wrinkle obsessed in any case. I know Ruth is petrified of needles, knives and things going wrong and she doesn’t like pain, so she is not big into it and, for the same reasons, I am not into it either.

Teen sweethearts
to bitter enemies As Ant McPartlin and Lisa Armstrong’s divorce battle rages on, where did it all go wrong for the power couple?
The ‘most amazing’ beginning Ant McPartlin was just 18 when he met Lisa Armstrong, then 17, at a pop concert in Newcastle in 1994, where they were both performing – she in pop band Deuce and he with best friend Declan Donnelly as PJ and Duncan. Ant previously described the meeting as ‘the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me,’ while Lisa said his handsome

They tied the knot in a fairy-tale ceremony in Buckinghamshire the following year, with Dec as best man. Ant once called it the ‘happiest day of his life’ and gushed that Lisa looked ‘absolutely stunning’ as she walked down the aisle.

Whenever Ant was in Australia presenting I’m A Celebrity… Lisa would be working as a make-up artist on Strictly – and because both shows run over November and December, it meant she couldn’t accompany Ant to Oz, so they wouldn’t see each other for a couple of months every year. A source has said, ‘This put a strain on their relationship.’ The couple also reportedly started sleeping in separate bedrooms due to Ant’s insomnia and Lisa’s snoring.

‘If you get a good script, you have to have it’ Why David Tennant is kicking off the new year by tapping into his dark side… You must be minted – you’re the hardest working man in showbiz! I’m very cheap. I’ll turn up for anything. Seriously, though, it’s all about the writers. There’s so much good writing about. It was sort of by accident. I love listening to podcasts. It was a side project that kind of ballooned. I’m not a journalist, so I did it just to see what happens when someone does it who doesn’t know what they are talking about!

Celeb INTERVIEW
‘Oti and I
FELL OUT backstage’ Cheryl tells us that the Strictly pro ‘plays dirty’ on The Greatest Dancer
WORDS: HAYLEY MINN. PHOTOS: BBC, PA IMAGES

12
fter filming wrapped on the first series of The Greatest Dancer last year, Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse confessed she and her fellow judge Cheryl ‘hadn’t really kept in touch’, adding fuel to the rumours of a feud between the two women. And with Simon Cowell’s BBC dance competition returning to our screens in January, former X Factor judge Cheryl, 36, has admitted things got heated between her and Oti, 29, while filming the second series. Oti and Cheryl are two of the four judges on the show, hosted by Alesha Dixon and Diversity star Jordan Banjo, with Glee star Matthew Morrison and new judge Todrick Hall completing the line-up. Todrick – who has choreographed for the likes of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift – isn’t the only thing that’s new about the upcoming series: at the end of each day of auditions, one judge, chosen at random, gets to choose their Greatest Dancer of the Day. Here, Cheryl dishes the dirt on what went on behind the scenes. Hi Cheryl, what was it like having Todrick sitting next to you on this year’s series? Hilarious! It was like having the front row seat to his show all day. There were so many jokes that the producers couldn’t fit them into the one-hour show. But I think I belly-laughed the whole way through.
Cheryl loves the new series Cheryl with fellow panellist Oti
You’re a talent show success story yourself, having won Popstars: The Rivals with Girls Aloud in 2002. Were you able to bring that experience to your dancers and help them with the rejection? One of the beautiful things about this show is no one feels rejected. It’s definitely a different process to the one I went through. Dancers are already competing in the dance world not on TV, so they know the drill. They know there’s only one winner. The real dance world is brutal – this is gentle in comparison.
Did you do deals with each other when it came to who you wanted on your team? There were some rows. Matthew was very sure of himself this year, and Oti tries to hide people so you forget about them. Then you choose yours, and she’s like, ‘Oh, I’m having this person!’ She’s a dirty player. I was just honest, saying, ‘I want him, I want her, don’t touch them.’
‘I can’t deal with emotional big-up talks’
The Greatest Dancer of the Day has been added this year. How did you find making that decision? Judges Oti, Matthew, When my name came up, I didn’t Cheryl and Todrick know who to pick. But when I was looking at them all standing there, I knew who I wanted. There were some great ones to choose from, but the ones I chose just gave me something more. It was instinct.
WomansOwn.co.uk
How did the other judges find it? Oti went into full meltdown!
Do you have any rituals before you do a live show? I just like silence. I can’t deal with any emotional, big-up talks. I like to just zone out.
Finally, what makes The Greatest Dancer different to Strictly? Strictly is Latin and Ballroom and our show has a lot of variety – there are little kids and then a 98-year-old. I just feel warm when I watch it back. It’s a feel-good family show and there’s something for everyone. ● The Greatest Dancer is on BBC1, Saturday, 4 January

ettling onto the sofa with a cup of tea, I smiled, thinking I’d have a few minutes to myself while my nine-week old daughter, Ava, was asleep in her bassinet beside me. Yet as I flicked on the TV, the shrill sound of a baby crying made me sit bolt upright. ‘It’s OK, sweetheart,’ I cooed, leaning over to comfort Ava, only she was sound asleep. I could still hear wailing, though, and it sounded right next to me. ‘Who is that?’ I asked the disembodied cries, but no sooner had I said it, I knew the answer. ‘It’s the baby I lost,’ I thought, flooded with painful memories of the miscarriage I’d had nine years earlier in 2007. I knew that was a crazy notion, but couldn’t stop panicked tears overwhelming me and as I gasped for air between sobs, I accidentally woke Ava. Cuddling her helped calm me, and as I got my breath back, I told myself I was just overtired and turned the TV up to drown out the phantom cries and my fears that something was very wrong. I’d always wanted to be a mum, so when I fell pregnant at 19, I was more excited than nervous. But a miscarriage at

eight weeks left me heartbroken, and while my job as a student children’s nurse provided a distraction, the pain of what I’d lost never faded. Sometimes, seeing a pregnant woman or newborn would fill me with a profound sadness. When I met Sean, 25, online in October 2015, I told him how I ached for a baby, so even though it was fast, we started trying, and by March 2016 I was pregnant. ‘It’s the best news,’ he laughed as we shed happy tears. I moved into Sean’s house in Manchester and at my 16-week scan found out we were expecting a girl. As my bump grew, I’d sometimes feel anxious something would go wrong again, and felt low at times – but I blamed the hormones. On 20 November 2016, Ava was born, and Sean and I couldn’t have loved her more. Only, as we settled in at home, the reality of being new parents hit and we

muddled through nappies and night feeds. Sean was brilliant, instinctively knowing when Ava was hungry or needed a nap, but I found it difficult and was upset I didn’t share the same bond.
Out of control After two weeks’ paternity leave, Sean went back to work as an audiology practitioner for the NHS and, all alone with Ava, I felt overwhelmed. I became protective to the point that paranoia crept in. I became obsessed with the idea she’d be kidnapped, until I rarely left the house.
She found it difficult to bond with baby Ava
With partner Sean and baby Ava
Real life SHOCK READ nurses cared for Ava while I was given a sedative and soon drifted off for my first night’s sleep in three months. After that, Ava stayed with me but under constant supervision, while Sean visited every day. I was given medication, daily group therapy and went to the sensory room with Ava, who loved gazing at the lights and colours. I still heard the other baby’s cries sometimes, but they were fading, and knowing they were all in my head helped me tune them out.
Truly happy
At night, every few minutes, I’d shuffle to the bottom of our bed and peer into Ava’s cot to check she was breathing. ‘She’s fine, love, go back to sleep,’ Sean would say, thinking I was just being an anxious new mum, but I’d lie awake in fear, too scared to say what I was feeling out loud. Then at nine weeks, those phantom cries started and I became convinced it was the baby I’d lost. I started hearing the desperate wails whenever I was alone with Ava, crying out for me, and I badly wanted to comfort, feed and soothe the baby, like I could Ava. One morning, as I was nursing Ava, the phantom cries sounded more distressed than ever. ‘I should kill myself,’ I thought suddenly – it was the only way I could be with my baby. Then I looked at Ava gurgling away and felt awash with guilt – I couldn’t leave her. ‘They both need me,’ I thought, feeling torn. The suicidal thoughts thrust me into a constant state of panic and I felt out of control. ‘How are my girls doing?’ Sean would
say when he arrived home from work, and I’d plaster a smile on my face. ‘Great,’ I’d beam, masking the battle going on inside my mind. One evening. when Ava was 12 weeks, we were watching TV while Ava slept upstairs, when the shrill wail began. ‘Can you hear crying?’ I asked Sean. ‘Not Ava – another baby?’ ‘Are you alright?’ Sean frowned. I broke down, confessing everything. Sean immediately rang the doctor, who suggested we go straight to a specialist mother-and-baby psychiatric unit at Wythenshawe Hospital. There, I was assessed by a psychiatrist – I admitted I’d been seriously thinking about suicide to be with my dead baby. She believed I was suffering psychotic postnatal depression and asked if I’d like to be admitted – with Ava, too, as I was breastfeeding. ‘Yes,’ I nodded, and although I’d left my job before Ava’s birth, I’d been working as a mental-health nurse, so I knew I needed help. That night,
‘Suicidal thoughts thrust me into a state of panic’
Two weeks later, I was allowed to take Ava to a cafe in the hospital grounds, alone – and for that hour, I felt like a normal mum. Then, that evening, as I made Ava laugh playing peekaboo, I felt truly happy. It was 10 weeks before I was well enough to go home – and, even then, Sean’s mum would pop round while he was at work because I was so nervous. I soon settled into a daily routine of feeds and naps, though, and in April, we took Ava to the zoo. ‘Like a normal family,’ I smiled to Sean as we watched her laughing at the monkeys. It’s hard not to feel guilty for putting Ava through all that – Sean too – but I’m working hard on my mental health, for them. I’m now living with bipolar disorder, have been prescribed medication and won’t be scared to seek more help if I need it. Having a baby sparks masses of emotions, but I want other mums to know that they don’t have to be afraid to speak up if they’re struggling or experiencing feelings that don’t seem usual. Ava is three now and a little chatterbox who loves to sing, watch Peppa Pig and read animal stories. When I look at her, I shudder to think how differently it could’ve turned out if I’d not accepted help – but thanks to a lot of support, I’m the mum I’ve always dreamed I would be. ● Phantom Cries by Stacey Dukes (£8, Amazon ebook) is available now Stacey hopes other struggling mums will speak up, too

This is the year I… TACKLE MY ROSACEA
Often misdiagnosed as acne, dermatologist Dr Ariel Haus explains that getting to the root of rosacea can be tricky. ‘Rosacea is a complicated and chronic condition,’ he says. ‘There are different types and it can be triggered or aggravated by lots of different factors.’ As a starting point, try to recognise what irritates your rosacea – it could be anything from spicy food, alcohol, exercise, even overly astringent cleansers – and then try to cut back. Some changes are easier than others. Our beauty editor, Fiona, found that washing her face with lukewarm instead of hot water dialled down her post-cleanse flush. While you identify your triggers, strip your skincare back to basics to make sure you’re not using anything that’s likely to cause irritation. French pharmacy favourites, like La Roche Posay Toleriane DermoCleanser, £12.50, Boots and Avène Hydrance Aqua Gel, £20, Boots, focus on soothing and nourishing skin. While Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist, £18, feelunique.com, helps defend skin against redness-causing external aggressors.

aking my last exhausted step across the finish line, I punched my fists in the air and looked around for my family and friends who were there to support me. Then, with my February 2019 Brighton half-marathon medal around my neck, we went to find a nearby pub. Only, while I felt elated sipping my gin and tonic, my heart also felt heavy. There were three important people missing – my sisters, Yvonne, Jane and Mandy. We should’ve all been together, popping champagne, celebrating Jane’s 50th, too, instead, my family were raising a glass to them and fundraising in their memory. When I was born in 1974, Yvonne was seven, Jane, five, and Mandy, just three. And when our little sister, Becky, arrived eight years later, the five of us became affectionately known as the ‘Cribb girls’. Our house in Newhaven was right next to the fire station, where our dad John worked, and while Yvonne had the box room, the rest of us shared – meaning it could get a bit lively at times. Jane would get cross when Mandy borrowed her clothes, and the bathroom rota was a nightmare. But we were a tribe, with Yvonne acting like our second mum, helping our mother, Gill, wash, feed and

keep us in line. Jane was the quiet but fiery one, who always sent the Monopoly board flying when she was losing, Mandy was the protector, always the first to stand up to playground bullies, while I sat quietly in the background, and we all doted on Becky, the baby of the family. It was a happy place, with friends regularly piling through the door and tucking into Mum’s homemade dinners.

demanding Account Director job and trying to keep life as normal as possible for Leon, then three. The following year, Yvonne was told she was cancer-free and we thought she was through the worst. Only, in summer 2010, she called me. ‘The cancer’s back,’ she said, and my heart sank. After suffering back pain, Yvonne had collapsed and tests had revealed three tumours pressing on her spinal cord. This time it was stage four, and terminal. ‘At least I won’t have any wrinkles in my coffin,’ she joked, trying to be brave, but Leon was only seven at the time, and we were devastated. Yvonne started chemo to extend the time she had left, and Jane and I took turns ferrying her to the Oncology ward, where she became well known for her wildly inappropriate sense of humour. But in May 2011, tragedy struck elsewhere, as Jane’s daughter, Megan collapsed at the local rugby club. Jane and I raced to Eastbourne District General Hospital, where Yvonne met us, but Megan had passed away from heart complications, just nine days before her 18th birthday. Jane channelled her grief
‘We were always there for one another’
We’d soon all grown up and started becoming mums ourselves, but were always there for each other, through the good and the bad, like when Jane’s oldest, Megan, was born in 1993 with a heart condition, or in February 1999, when Mandy’s 15-month-old, Kaycee, died suddenly after contracting a virus. Mandy struggled to cope with the terrible grief, so her eldest, Chelsea, then nine, came to live with me. Then in 2007, Yvonne found a peasized lump in her right breast and was diagnosed with cancer. As she underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she battled through, refusing to quit her

RSED into setting up a charity offering support to families who’d lost a child, and named it You Raise Me Up after a Westlife song – Megan had always loved the band. A year on, Jane was still battling grief when she took my hand one afternoon while we sat in her garden. ‘Feel this,’ she said, and as I did, I gasped – it was a lump the size of an orange on her left breast. I urged her to get it checked, but she was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Tests showed it wasn’t genetic, just cruel luck.

Consumed by grief They’d both lost a child, but while Jane focused her grief into something positive, Mandy’s tore her apart, and she never recovered, drifting in and out of our lives as she dated the wrong men and struggled with drug issues. Then, in November 2014, I received an urgent message from Jane. ‘It’s Mandy’ she wrote. Mandy had been admitted to hospital with pneumonia, where she’d died, aged 43. Heartbroken doesn’t even come close to how I felt, thinking about my beautiful, kind sister who’d never been able to beat her demons. Within 18 months, our tribe of five had become three, yet just as we accepted life as a trio, Jane’s cancer returned, this time in her lungs, liver and breastbone. All the tragedy had chipped away at Mum and
Yvonne and Jane bonded over their shared experiences, but while Yvonne wore a headscarf, unhappy about losing her hair, Jane didn’t seem to care about that, displaying her bald head with pride. After chemo, Jane had surgery, and in April 2013, was officially in remission. But there was no celebration, because Yvonne was deteriorating at speed, and that same month was moved to a hospice. Two weeks later, she took her last breath, aged just 45. As five sisters became four, the hole left by Yvonne’s absence was felt by us all. Family parties felt soulless without her bossing us around, sarcastically Jane’s daughter, ribbing me for being the

Dad, and Jane couldn’t face causing them more pain by telling them her cancer was terminal, so I broke the news for her. Despite aggressive treatment to manage the cancer, Jane battled on, even when it spread to her brain. We spent as much time together as we could, but after a fall in December 2017 put Jane in hospital, she knew it was the end. ‘I’ve had enough. No more treatment,’ she told her son Oliver, then 22. Four days later, Jane passed away and was buried next to Megan in the local cemetery. It felt so unfair, but I poured my energy into Jane’s charity. I crossed that finish line in Brighton in Jane’s honour, and I’ve since run a half marathon for Yvonne, Mandy and my lost nieces, too, raising more than £3,000 for You Raise Me Up. Mandy’s eldest, Chelsea, 29, who lived with us until she was 18 years old, is like a sister to my teenagers, Evan, 19, and Ruby, 15, and has two children of her own now, who call me Nanny Nat Nat. I often talk with Mum and Dad about Yvonne, Jane and Mandy, and we take great pleasure watching their children grow up, knowing how proud they’d be. At times, it’s felt like my family is cursed, but mostly I feel blessed to have had so many strong, wonderful women in my life. ● Visit youraisemeup.co.uk for support and advice if you’ve lost a loved one

Doctor Dawn Harper answers all your questions...
Q
A recent health check has shown that my cholesterol is high and that I need to make an appointment to see my doctor to discuss starting statins. I really don’t understand – I became vegan a couple of years ago and eat so healthily. Should I ask to repeat the test? Actually, only about 10-20% of our cholesterol comes from our diet. The rest is made by our bodies, so it is perfectly possible to eat healthily and have a high cholesterol, or have a high fat diet and have a low cholesterol. So, I’m afraid, you should see your GP and discuss statins.

I had antibiotics for a chest infection and while I was on them, I noticed that my food tasted metallic. I assumed that it was a side effect, but I have been off them for over a week and food still tastes metallic and now my tongue looks white and furry. Is there anything that I can do?
A
You may have oral thrush. This is a fungal infection, which can occur after taking antibiotics. Our mouths are teeming with bacteria and fungi living in balance. Antibiotics are good at getting rid of bad bacteria but can also affect the good bacteria, allowing the fungi to thrive. Speak to your GP who will be able to give you some antifungal drops to help you.

The most likely explanation is that you have a urethral caruncle, which is a benign lump that can occur in post-menopausal women. If so, your GP may suggest oestrogen cream. Cancer of the vulva is not common, but any new lump

I’m a semi-professional singer and have noticed in recent weeks that I can’t reach higher notes any more and that my speaking voice is slightly husky. Could I be developing vocal cord nodules? My mum had nodules removed many years ago and never got her singing voice back again. You may well be developing nodules. Try to rest your voice and avoid irritants such as smoke. You should also stay well hydrated and use steam inhalations. Your GP may also recommend an assessmen with a speech therapist. Some nodules will heal without the need for an operation, but the good news is that surgical techniques have really improved in recent years and the outlook following surgery is much better.

My friend is depressed Q
My best friend has been going through a hard time and is sad. She’s lost weight, can’t sleep or eat and is always tearful. I know she has money worries, but she also lost her mum this year. I want to help but am scared I will say the wrong thing as I think she’s depressed. What do I do? She’s 47, and her kids are grown, so I’m all the support she has. Name and address withheld.

The best way to help your friend is to make sure she knows you want to support her. The next time you see her say, ‘What can I do to help right now?’ If she says she doesn’t know, then tell her you’ve noticed she’s down and add, ‘Would you like to see someone as I can come with you?’ If she turns this down, don’t push her, instead make sure she knows who she can go to for help. Sexting (when someone sends or receives a sexual text, image or video) that occurs consensually between two adults is not breaking any laws. However, it’s never advisable to send naked selfies to anyone, as who knows where they will end up. Talk to your son but remember your son and his girlfriend are adults, so it’s between them.

Why can’t
I lose weight? Want to shape up, but the pounds just won’t shift? It could be down to something simple…
T
hink it’s trickier now to stay slim than it was in your 20s? Sadly, you’re right. But the good news is you can still turn things around if you discover what’s derailing your diet. ‘Yes, it’s harder to lose weight after 50,’ says nutritionist Dr Marilyn Glenville (glenvillenutrition.com), author of Natural Alternatives To Dieting (£9.77, amazon.co.uk).
‘As we get older, we naturally lose muscle, which makes it harder to burn fat – and this also causes our metabolism to slow down.’ So, with staying at a healthy weight essential for lowering your risk of arthritis, heart disease and diabetes, take our quiz to find out what’s secretly stopping you from slimming. Health LIVE WELL blood sugar will drop and you’ll be unable to concentrate,’ she says. ‘Eat little and often to keep your blood glucose (sugar) stable.’ Plan meals in advance, and include protein, such as lean meat, fish, soya or nuts and seeds. Sign up to a slimming club for steady and sustainable weight loss.
13-18 You’re stressed out
0-6 Hormones are to blame Steadily been putting on weight? Your hormones have changed, but your eating habits haven’t. Thanks to the menopause, women need 100-200 fewer calories per day compared with before. ‘Weight can increase as your body tries to compensate for lower estrogen levels in order to protect your bone health,’ says Dr Glenville. If you’ve been eating the same way for 20 years, cut down portion sizes. Beat bloating by swapping white bread, rice and pasta for wholegrains and vegetables, plus drink plenty of water. Walking, aerobics, jogging, swimming or skipping can be beneficial, but you need to aim for 150 minutes a week.
with sleep patterns
You may think you’re being clever, but fasting during the day, skipping meals or unrealistic fads won’t work. ‘You might lose weight in the short-term, but the moment you quit, you will put on all the weight you lost and more besides,’ says Dr Glenville. Stop skipping meals. ‘Your Breakfast will help with concentration
19-24 You’re not getting the right nutrients ‘During the menopause, you need more vitamins, minerals and protein to keep everything in balance,’ says Dr Glenville. ‘There are certain nutrients that turn glucose into energy instead of fat. If you don’t have enough of these, your body will find it harder to lose weight, especially around the middle.’ Avoid processed foods and download the NHS’s Eatwell Guide (nhs.uk), to make sure your diet is balanced, and consider taking a supplement. ‘Chromium reduces cravings and magnesium balances blood sugar,’ says Dr Glenville. ‘Plus, amino acids help to control appetite.’ Try NHP Amino Support (£31.77, naturalhealthpractice.com).

The Results
7-12 You have a bad relationship with food
‘Stress can interfere with your sleep pattern, and lack of sleep can not only affect your appetite, but make it harder to lose weight,’ says Dr Glenville. This can result in binge eating all the bad stuff. Not only will all that sugar result in more hot flushes, it will leave you lethargic. Eat little and often, as the stress hormones are released when your blood sugar drops, and cut down on caffeine, sugar, alcohol and efined carbs, such as white bread and biscuits. And get outside – walking or just simple tretches every day an help you feel Stress can interfere more relaxed.

Your new year
fat shreLodseder
Overdone it this Christmas? Fear not, Fiona Kirk’s two-week diet plan will help kick-start your weight loss for the new decade
10 lb in 2 weeks
THE RULES
Before you begin, here’s some of Fiona’s essential tips for fast, achievable weight loss…
1
Rethink breakfast
‘There is scant evidence to prove skipping break fast results in us eating more during the remainder of the day,’ says Fiona. ‘Have your first meal when you are actually hungr y.’
2
Go pink
Japanese researchers showed that mice given astaxanthin – the pigment that gives salmon and prawns their pink colour – had significantly lower body weight and body fat than mice fed a similar diet without astaxanthin. ‘Add a “portion of pink” into your day,’ says Fiona.
Try having a snack at bedtime
3
‘Studies show that those who regularly get less than six hours’ sleep per night tend to gain more weight than people who get seven to eight,’ says Fiona. Try a snack that promotes the release of the sleep -inducing hormone
32
melatonin, such as half a banana or two buttered oatcakes with two turkey slices.
4
Boost your weight loss
5
Fight fat with calcium
‘Caffeine increases the number of calories the body burns at rest,’ says Fiona. ‘A single 100mg dose may increase our metabolic rate by 3-4% for at least an hour afterwards.’ It’s particularly effective before you do any exercise, so have a double espresso or a small, filtered coffee first thing (skip the milk and sugar), followed by 30-45 minutes of exercise.
‘Research indicates that a diet rich in calcium allows us to burn more calories per day,’ says Fiona. ‘There’s also evidence that when calcium levels are low, the brain detects this and stimulates feelings of hunger, causing us to eat more.’ Fiona recommends eating nuts, seeds, spinach, cabbage, broccoli and beans.

Hannah Verdier, 47, lives in Sydenham, southeast London, and is mum to daughters, Mimi, 10, and Evie, seven. In a typical week, the single copywriter drinks around 38 units. By switching wine for non-alcoholic drinks, she cut down to just eight units in a week. I’m a single parent, so during the week friends tend to come to me, as it’s easier for babysitting. We’ll often crack open a bottle of wine to share and sometimes I’ll have a glass or two while I cook. It can be stressful getting through the week, and drink helps me relax, so by Friday, when the girls go to their dad’s house, I can become a bit unleashed. When a friend came round on the Monday, I really wanted some wine but I opted for non-alcoholic beer. On the Wednesday, I had non-alcoholic wine but it was horrible, so I switched to water. It wasn’t difficult until the Friday night. I was out with a friend and we’d normally share a bottle over dinner, but while she enjoyed wine, I sipped on fizzy water. I’m definitely more aware of what I’m drinking now and won’t go back to Friday-night bingedrinking because I know how good Saturdays can be without a hangover. But I will stick with water rather than non-alcoholic alternatives to wine. They’re not that nice.

As soon as Paul comes home from work, we open a bottle to have over dinner. It’s a relaxing way to end the day. If friends come to collect kids after a play date, I will ask if they want tea or wine. I try not to drink every night. IF YOU DO ONE THING THIS WEEK…. MAKE CASH FROM YOUR CAR Rather than paying for an airport car park when you go away on holiday, why not make money from it instead? With Car & Away, a new car-hiring service, your car is rented out while you’re away, and the company reckons owners can make around £80-£200 per week doing it, depending on the size and make, plus you’ll get a free car valeting on your return. It’s currently available at Gatwick and Bristol airports and Car & Away says your car will be insured when it’s with them. As always, read the T&Cs carefully to make sure you’re happy and it’s worth telling your own car insurance company beforehand too. For more info, visit carandaway.com.

Criminals have conned victims out of over £400,000 in just two months in a new Amazon Prime scam, warns Action Fraud UK. Victims receive automated calls stating a fraudster has used their details to get an Amazon Prime subscription and are told to ‘press 1’ to cancel the transaction. But when they do, they’re connected to criminals posing as Amazon staff, who tell them they need access to their computer to stop it happening. The victim is told to download a type of software, then log into their online banking — this grants the fraudster remote access to their computer and allows them to see the victim’s personal and financial details.
3 Too Good To Go This app lets you buy cut-price food from restaurants, cafes and bakeries that would otherwise be thrown away at the end of the day. Just choose where you’d like to buy from, pay via the app, then go at your agreed time to collect your ‘Magic Bag’. The bags are typically priced between £3-£5, and are filled with at least three times the value you’ve paid on Too Good To Go. So if your bag costs £3, the food would have cost a minimum of £9 at normal service. Visit toogoodtogo.co.uk.

My man had
a midlife makeover
Teeth whitening, supplements, face creams. We find out what it’s really like when your partner becomes a self-tanning hunk
W
hat do Simon Cowell, Gregg Wallace and Huw Edwards all have in common? They have all had a midlife makeover – with gym routines, spray tans and pearly-white teeth. Music mogul Simon, 60, even went vegan and cut back on alcohol, losing a
stone and a half in weight. Fans were shocked at the transformation, but one woman has seen it all before. Here, Cara French, 45, explains how she watched as her chain-smoking, takeaway-loving partner Neil, 46, changed into a vegan gym-lover and self-tanning hunk.
‘I joked that he was having an affair with the gym’ Cara French is a lab technician. She lives in Rhyl, Denbighshire, with her partner, Neil Coates, 46. ‘Neil and I met at a party nine years ago,’ explains Cara. ‘He was working as a firefighter, doing 12-hour shifts. He loved his food and had takeaways at least four times a week. And at weekends, we enjoyed long lie-ins and going out for a curry.’ But three years ago, Neil began to think about ageing, after a few friends turned 50. Cara says, ‘He was smoking up to 30 cigarettes a day, drinking alcohol and
putting on weight. He weighed 13st and didn’t want to be fat when he turned 50. I thought it was great he wanted to be healthy, but when he signed up for a gym membership, I had no idea it was about to become his second home. ‘Instead of sleeping in with a cuddle, he was up at 5am for a two-hour workout, six days a week. Soon he started coming home later, too, fitting in a cardio class after work. ‘I thought it was just a phase, and joked that he was having an affair with the gym. But it never stopped.’ And a few months later,

Neil turned his health-and-fitness obsession to food.

He had purged our kitchen ‘I came home one day and he’d done a clean sweep of the kitchen cupboards,’ says Cara. ‘Out went treats, he banned sugars, and carbs and dairy were out. ‘I had to have a small section of the fridge for my stuff and hide anything he thought was unhealthy. The weight
You’ll never BELIEVE IT! dropped off him and, after a while, his muscles started to pop out. ‘I don’t work out, don’t count calories and don’t spend much time worrying about my appearance. But here I was with a man who has a body better than any man I have ever dated, even in my 20s.
‘I sometimes eat the same food as him, but when it comes to swapping chips for quinoa and bulgar wheat, I draw the line. Don’t get me wrong, I fancy his new body, but he doesn’t have a lot of time or energy to let me enjoy it.’ Neil, who after shedding fat and gaining muscle now weighs 11st, then turned his attention to other aspects of his appearance. Cara says, ‘He started buying tailored shirts that showed off his figure. Then he started getting full-body fake tans and whitening his teeth. He even started using posher face creams to give him a healthier glow. It is frustrating giving up takeaways. I miss having a relaxing time, as he’s always asleep before me and awake at the crack of dawn. ‘Although I think it’s a bit crazy, I’m proud of him and he’s so much more confident now. He’s my very own Simon Cowell.’

Now I can’t imagine life without the gym, tan s, diets and face creams. Men sho uldn’t fall prey to middle age, you can turn things around if you want to.’

Brined chicken with cider, pears and pumpkin Brining the chicken seasons it throughout and keeps it juicy. Serve with mashed potato or salad.
COMPILED BY: ROSIE BENSBERG. RECIPES AND PHOTOGRAPHY: TI-MEDIACONTENT.COM
Serves 4-6
✽ 1 large, free-range chicken (about 2kg) ✽ 10 shallots, halved and peeled ✽ 4 bay leaves ✽ 5 thyme sprigs, plus extra leaves to serve ✽ 50g butter, softened ✽ 1 small pumpkin or round squash, deseeded and cut into wedges ✽ 3 small pears, halved and cored ✽ 2tbsp olive oil ✽ 150ml dry cider For the brine: ✽ 200ml dry cider ✽ 100g demerara sugar ✽ 2tbsp rock salt ✽ 1tbsp whole black peppercorns ✽ 2 thyme sprigs ✽ 3 fresh bay leaves, crushed
1
Make the brine by mixing the ingredients with 200ml water. Put the chicken in a large, zip-lock bag and pour in the brine. Seal, set it in a bowl, and refrigerate for 6-24 hours. Pre-heat the oven to 190C/Gas 5. Remove the chicken (discard the

brine), rinse and pat dry. Put four shallot halves, 1 bay leaf and 1 thyme sprig inside the chicken. Loosen the skin and put a pat of butter and the bay leaves underneath. Spread the rest of the butter over the breast and legs. Add to a roasting tin, cover and roast for 20 mins. Uncover the chicken and put the pumpkin, pears, shallots and thyme around the base. Drizzle with oil, season and add the cider. Reduce the heat to 180C/Gas 4 and roast for 50 minutes, covering the chicken if it browns too quickly. To see if it’s cooked, insert a skewer into the thigh: the juices should run clear. If not, cover and return to the oven for 10 minutes. Rest the chicken on a board, tented with foil, for around 10 minutes before carving.

Explore the delights of this beautiful and fascinating walled city
Why go? Famous for its medieval Old Town, stunning landscapes, and more recently for being one of the filming sets of Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik is a gorgeous city. As you stroll through its narrow passageways, admiring the gleaming stone buildings, it’s hard to believe that, during the Balkan War in the 1990s, bombing caused significant damage to this now-flawless Croatian city. Thankfully, it’s been painstakingly restored and there’s never been a better time to visit.
Explore the Old Town
Dubrovnik’s main attractions are found in and around the Old Town, encircled by more than a mile of preserved medieval ramparts. Nowadays, the walls teem not with soldiers but with tourists. Over half a million visit each year to marvel at the array of historic attractions. The Square of the Loggia is the central point where you’ll find some of Dubrovnik’s most famous buildings and
public monuments, including Orlando’s Column, the Church of St. Blaise and Small Onofrio’s fountain. Perhaps the city’s most famous draw, the ancient walls within the Old Town were built between the 13th and 16th century and remain largely intact, despite numerous attacks. There are several notable towers and forts that you can explore, such as the Minčeta Tower, the Lovrijenac Fort, the Bokar Tower and the Revelin Fort.

Small Onofrio’s fountain is a must-see spot
If you are a fan of HBO’s Game of Thrones series, you’ll be pleased to know that Dubrovnik was one of its key filming locations. It doubled as the show’s capital, Kings Landing, from season 2 onwards, and with guided tours on offer you can relive some of the key scenes. They’re well worth doing for the views alone.
Travel ESCAPES
And before you leave Catch the cable car to the top of Srd Hill and enjoy breathtaking vistas of not just the city, but also the mountain-backed Dalmatian coast. Rising 412m above sea level, you can get some of the best views of Dubrovnik. There is also a restaurant if you want to enjoy a meal. Or why not pack a picnic and snap up a spot in time for sunset? For an extra challenge, hike up to the top.

garden revamp!
Diane Goode, 51, from Braintree, put her £1,500 win towards a garden transformation
S
MAIN PHOTO (POSED BY MODELS): GETTY
itting in my favourite spot in the garden, I couldn’t wait for the summer to start. Though it was a lovely warm evening in May 2019, it didn’t yet feel like summer. ‘Don’t you think the garden could do with livening up?’ I said, as my partner Jeremy, 57, sat down next to me. ‘It could certainly use a little TLC,’ he smiled, passing me my tablet. Even though our garden really needed a facelift, we both loved sitting outside, especially when it got warmer. Jeremy worked full-time and I worked part-time, so finding the time to agree on our garden renovation was proving tricky!
Jeremy loved to unwind by scrolling through his phone, and one of my favourite things was playing bingo.

‘Some rooms have tickets from just 1p’
I’d always loved playing, having gone to the bingo halls with my mum when I was younger. But, after a while, and with a busy schedule, we went a lot less. That’s why I signed up to Woman’s Own Bingo in February 2015 – to get that fun bingohall experience in my living room. I’ve never had a favourite game, so

always tried different rooms to see what was going on. Some rooms are great value with tickets from just 1p – and you could natter in the chat rooms with fellow players. And, most of all, it was great fun! So, during that lovely warm evening in May 2019, I decided to sit back in the garden with my tablet and play a few games of bingo. This time, when I logged in, I decided to give Sapphire Bingo a try. It’s like traditional bingo and uses 90 balls. To win, you need to match your numbers on one or two lines, or match all of the numbers on your bingo card to win the Full House. If you get all of your numbers in a certain number of calls, you’ll also win the Jackpot! I bought 12 tickets at 25p each for the next game New exotic plants and pots and waited for it to start. As my numbers started to be crossed off automatically, I decided to have a little chat with Jeremy about our day. We were soon deep into conversation, so I hadn’t realised that a lot of my numbers had been called. Glancing at my screen, I noticed I had just two to go.

‘Look at this!’ I squealed to Jeremy – and, as soon as he looked, a banner popped up on screen telling me I’d won. ‘Wait! I think I’ve just won £1,500!’ I said. ‘As if you’ve just won!’ he beamed, not believing me at first. But I really had won! I couldn’t believe I’d got the Full House!
All-round revamp I didn’t have to give too much thought on what to spend my Woman’s Own Bingo winnings on, either, as it really was time to turn our garden from drab to fab! That weekend, we set about revamping our garden from top to bottom, as well as putting in new decking and looking at getting a fresh coat of paint for the fence. We also got some new exotic plants and pots, as well as a new water feature. It all made such a difference! I even had enough left over to treat my grandkids to some new toys and to start redecorating our bedroom. So far, we’ve treated ourselves to a new carpet – not that I’ve been in the house much since the garden was done, mind you. I spend as much time as I can in my garden now, it’s really stunning and has been completely transformed. What a wonderful way to have spent my incredible Woman’s Own Bingo win!

Guy Ritchie returns to his British gangster-movie roots with this star-studded action comedy. Matthew McConaughey stars as an expat American marijuana kingpin who’s embroiled in all kinds of shenanigans as he looks to quit. Hugh Grant pops up with a funny estuary accent, Downton’s Michelle Dockery looks distinctly unladylike and Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell and Last Christmas star Henry Golding all gamely join the mayhem.
Steph is commissioned to review a newly opened country estate in the Lake District, run by the Sinclair family. But Harry Sinclair is still mourning the death of his wife, Elizabeth. So when Steph is asked by Elizabeth’s mother to secretly investigate her daughter’s death, she starts sneaking around to uncover the truth. This book cleverly explores the complexity of family dynamics and is a gripping thriller perfect for avid fans of Ruth Ware.

Dashing gossip columnist Marcello Mastroianni sniffs out the scoops and scandals of Roman high society in Federico Fellini’s legendary 1960 film – now being re-released in a gleaming new print to celebrate the director’s centenary. The iconic sight of Anita Ekberg cavorting in the Trevi fountain in a strapless black dress was originally quite shocking. The Vatican even tried to get the film banned. Sixty years on, it’s pretty hard to see why, but the film remains a brilliant snapshot of the lost era’s hypnotic, decadent glamour.
