Small businesses get big boost at Expo Jamaica The Jamaica Emerging Manufacturers’ and Services (JEMS) Village was a new feature of the biennial Expo Jamaica trade fair, held at the National Arena and National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston from April 19 to 22. The JEMS Village showcased micro and small business industries in castor oil, nutraceuticals, beauty and spa care, aromatherapy, and bamboo products. The Village highlighted female and young entrepreneurs in these emerging sectors. Focus on “Emerging Industtries” is a policy initiative of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF). According to MICAF: “These industries represent new and exciting opportunities for Jamaica’s development. Fresh Magazine
MICAF defines emerging industries as those sectors, typically based on new products, services, technologies or ideas, which are in early stage development and are characterized by high-growth rates and significant market potential. The Ministry said MICAF is committed to the support of emerging industries and has therefore placed special emphasis on nurturing their development. In an interview with the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Executive Director of the Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA), Imega Breese McNab, said while 42 booth spaces were reserved for the JEMS Village, more than this number had applied which, she said, was clear testament that such businesses are looking for (exposure through) this platform.” 1st QTR 2018
“From the previous expo, we realized that there were small and medium businesses that did not have the funds to purchase the larger booths. So we thought it would be helpful to (provide) an area within the exhibition that allowed the smaller businesses to showcase their products/services. This would also facilitate interactions between the exhibitors of micro and small businesses and the buyers on a stage that they would never (otherwise) have had (in order to have an) opportunity to engage (with each other),” she noted. There were specific selection criteria for businesses interested in and desirous of benefiting from the JEMS Village initiative, including: earnings of less than J$20 million annually; tax compliance; and employees of less than 10 persons. 3

Development Is Front & Centre It has been 28 years since Jamaica began its experiment with the free market, when the imperative: “Export or Die!” entered the local business lexicon in 1990 as the mantra of economic activity. Today, after many fits and starts and trials and errors, private sector businesses and the small business sector in parti-
cular, have become the centerpiece of the Government of Jamaica’s (GoJ) Economic Policy. When the dedicated MSME Office in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF) was established early in 2016, part of the rationale given by the Ministry was that the micro, small and medium-sized enterpri-

Easy Electricity Saving Tips For Your Home and Appliances Paying bills is probably the least enjoyable activity, second to a root canal. We all dread the monthly reminder that our hard earned money is going away just as fast as it came to us, and it is an expense we can never really get out of. But I have done the research and there are definitely ways to spend less on the ever irritating energy bill. The tips are easy and can be done as second nature once learned. And as a bonus, they will help the environment. These energy saving tips will help with your monthly electricity bill.
Air Conditioning and Heat Depending on where you live, you will most likely use your air conditioner to create a comfortable environment. Keep the vents open as well as clean. Did you know that there is an entire airflow system in your home that you might not know about? Do an energy audit to make sure all your vents are open and clean. If not, you could be blowing extra money trying to be cooler when all you needed was a clean and open vent. Putting a big couch, bookcase, or shelf in the way of airflow can cause you to crank up the usage for no reason.
Laundry Machines Doing laundry itself is an annoying task. Turns out, you can make it a little more enjoyable by saving money on it on your next electricity bill. Reduce the heat level LG electronics released a statement recently that heat accounts for 90 percent of the energy usage in laundry machines. Wash your clothes on the cold setting to seriously reduce cost. And forgo the dryer altogether. Most of the heat is used there – use the free sunshine instead. Fresh Magazine

5 Jobs That Probably Won’t Be Around in 10 Years Postal Workers
Retail Cashier
Communications technology, including email communication, will make the need for postal workers redundant. With the rise of private companies taking the Post Office’s place, this government-run job has little chance for career growth and advancement.
With the influx of selfservice checkouts, and automated processes during purchasing, the typical retail cashier will eventually fade away.
Publishers and Printers
Travel Agent
It’s no surprise that print media is fading out of the industry. More and more consumers are going digital when it comes to entertainment and news. Publishing companies have been having a hard time keeping up with the times. These industries are slowly fading out to give rise to new digital media companies.
Telemarketers

Nowadays, people don’t use the phone as much as they used to. With other more efficient ways of communicating – such as email or texting, old fashioned telemarketing is slowly becoming a job of the past. With email marketing on the rise, these once common jobs will no longer be found. Fresh Magazine

People with Apple-Shaped Bodies have an increased risk of Kidney Disease High blood pressure in the kidneys of people with apple-shaped bodies may be responsible for their increased risk of developing kidney disease later in life, according to a study appearing in an issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). The findings suggest that these individuals may benefit from treatments that reduce kidney blood pressure. People with “apple-shaped” bodies — when fat is concentrated mostly in the abdominal area — are more likely than those with “pear-shaped” bodies to develop kidney disease. The mechanisms underlying this risk are not well understood. To study the issue, Arjan Kwakernaak, MD/ PhD candidate (University Medical Center Groningen, in The Netherlands) and his colleagues looked for links between waist-to-hip ratio, which reflects central body fat distribution, and kidney measures in 315 healthy individuals with an average body mass index of 24.9 kg/m2. (A body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2 is considered normal weight.) Higher waist-to-hip ratios were associated with lower kidney function, lower kidney blood flow, and higher blood pressure within the kidneys. “We found that apple-shaped persons — even if totally healthy and with a normal blood pressure — have an elevated blood pressure in their kidneys. When they are also overweight or obese, this is even worse,” said Kwakernaak. This suggests that elevated blood pressure in the kidneys of individuals with apple-shaped bodies may be responsible for their increased risk of developing kidney disease later in life. People with “apple-shaped” bodies have fat concentrated mostly in the abdominal and upper-body area. Previous studies have shown that high blood pressure in the kidneys can be treated through salt restriction or with drugs that block what is known as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. “Our current data suggest that such interventions could be particularly useful in subjects with a central body fat distribution,” Kwakernaak said.
