letter from the editor issue one has come and gone, a mid-season digest was tested in late july and now its time for another full-size issue the fall edition. my favorite season is fall. it’s a transitional time. long summer days are getting shorter, cooler and leaves change from verdant green to golden ochre, rust and crimson. shorts, summer dresses and t-shirts make way for long pants, warm woolen sweaters and cozy scarves. it’s the time to bundle up, hunker down and get ready for the winter chill that will be on us before we know it.

Editor-in-Chief & Publisher CHRISTINA LAZAR-SCHULER

Creative Director & fashion Editor CHRISTINA LAZAR-SCHULER

with this transitional season comes transitional fashion. perennial favorites such as plaids, quilted fabrics and rich jewels rear their seasonal heads. textures like fur, suede, leather and chunky knits are everywhere. colours change and are a reflection of both what we’re leaving behind and where we’re going. in this fall 2012 issue we are celebrating these changes, embracing the changes in colour, texture and shape. we will be looking at the changing perception of menswear as it influences women’s wear, we will see traditional patterns tweaked and reinvented (as they are every fall season) and we will glance ahead to the chilly colours of the winter season. no, this isn’t the Vogue fall fashion bible - another monster issue for 2012 has recently hit the newsstands, but what it is, is an issue full of colour, texture, mood and spirit. i hope you enjoy and ‘fall’ in love with this pivotal season of change as much a i have. peace out...

Pantone Fall 2012 Forecast An excerpt from the PANTONE 2012 seasonal colour forecast... From love potions and the magical hour of sunset to witches and warlocks, fantasy and illusion are inspiring designers this fall season. With an unexpected mix of darks, brights and neutrals, they cleverly manipulate reality to transport consumers to an enchanting place, free from the stresses of everyday life. “By playing to consumers’ practical side with versatile neutrals, and boosting their confidence with bold, spirited hues, this skillfully balanced palette has something for everyone,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. As the season transitions from the heat of summer, Bright Chartreuse, a vital yellow-green, pays homage to a typical spring shade and creates a bridge into the cooling days of fall. Reminiscent of bright green foliage, it provides a perfect accent to every color in the palette.

rose smoke by Barbara Tfank

Honey Gold, a mellow, burnished yellow, suggests the soft-muted tones of sunlight to brighten a fall day. Pair it with sensible and strong Olympian Blue, a patriotic blue that will surely make its way into fall and winter athletic apparel. Rich and robust, French Roast is a tasty, sophisticated hue that is a great alternative to the black and charcoal basics typically worn in the fall. Other staple neutrals include elegant and versatile Titanium, the quintessential cool gray, and Rose Smoke, a veiled rose tone that pairs well with Rhapsody and Titanium. For nearly 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important color trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for fall 2012.

Like the name implies, Pink Flambé is a delicious, vibrant pink with a bit of heat to it. Pair it with vivacious and enticing Tangerine Tango for an ongoing retro feeling. Or, to bring a calming element to the mix, combine these vibrant warm tones with Ultramarine Green, a deep, cooling blue-green. Ethereal Rhapsody is a grayed-down purple that also encourages comfort and serenity with its quiet, muted tone.

When did you start your journey in photography? I dabbled lightly in black-andwhite film photography in high school when I was fourteen, but I suppose I technically started early autumn of 2011. Things began fairly slowly, and I mostly photographed inanimate objects and abstract things. It wasn’t until I began my 365 project on March 1st, 2012 that things really started to pick up momentum. Since then, there has definitely been a snowball effect, and it’s both very exciting and also humbling to see. What prompted you to begin your 365 Project? I am actually not entirely sure, but I do know that I noticed a few photographers whom I followed that were doing their own, and it immediately intrigued me. I spent a good two weeks or so debating whether or not I should take on the challenge before committing to it. But now that I’m just over halfway through it, I know for certain that this was quite honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made, and that’s no exaggeration. It has already been a life-changing experience for me, and I cannot wait to see where else it will take me in the coming months.

... I know for certain that this was quite honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made ...

42

issue 02 | FALL 2012

Shooting a simple photo every day can become a tedious chore, especially when we have “regular jobs” that take up our time and sap our creative energy. How have you continued to challenge yourself through the 365 process and keep the images fresh? When I first started the project, I had an unspoken (and rather silly) rule that I decided upon: that I would only photograph inanimate objects, nature, and landscapes. If I was to photograph people, I would never completely show their faces. By day 100, I felt as though I was repeatedly slamming my head against a wall, stifling my own creativity. I happened upon the amazing universe that is flickr and found inspiration that left me speechless, most of which was self-portrait photography. I decided to throw my rule out the window, and ever since then, I have felt myself growing as a photographer and an artist. I allowed myself a completely new outlet that has no end to the possibilities--I can now use my daily photo as a source of artistic venting, a hopeful spark of inspiration to others, or to send a message through imagery. Once I opened those floodgates, I completely lost the worry of “what will I shoot today?” While each individual photo takes a significantly longer amount of time now, I can say that it is worth every second of my time. Following this path is teaching me so much about myself and the world around me, bit by bit.

A lot of your images are self-portraits, correct? Do you prefer self-portraits or working with models? To me the comparison between those two is fairly stark, but at this point I have to say self-portraits--I know without the slightest doubt that I can and will do whatever it takes to re-create the visions in my head. The temporary discomfort for a long-lasting image is always worth it to me. On top of that, I find self-portraits to be extremely therapeutic and even vital to my growth as an artist at this point. Which isn’t to say that I don’t absolutely love working with models! Sometimes a model can really open my eyes in a fresh way to new possibilities, and I readily admit that many times it’s just a breath of fresh air for me to take photos of someone other than myself. However, for simplicity’s sake: at this point, I would say self-portraits, but I love aspects of both!

What are your favourite places and themes for photography? Forests, absolutely. I spent a lot of time in forests and up trees as a child, so using that as a frequent setting for my photos is very close to my heart and resonates with me. Also, areas with water--it’s incredibly versatile and undeniably beautiful as well. In terms of themes, my favorite is absolutely fantasy of many varieties. I’ve read quite a few fantasy stories and enjoy creating images that are both moody and magical. I like to transport myself and the viewer into a place that exists if only we allow it. The world is a beautiful and magical place, and sometimes we just need to be reminded that that is indeed the case.

You work a lot of post-processing into your final pieces. Where did you learn your processing techniques? Nearly all of it is self-taught. As a teen, I was into digital painting for a while, so I picked up some basic Photoshop skills that way. Aside from that, I’ve caught some little tips and tricks from fellow artists, but many of the things I do I figured out simply through trial and error. Which is both a frustrating and very rewarding way of going about it. If you’re able to push past the frustration and figure out a new method of editing, it is so incredibly satisfying. And more recently I’ve looked up tutorials on certain special effects. But mostly I enjoy challenging myself to figure it out on my own. Sometimes I relate it to solving a puzzle: “now how did that photographer DO that?” I enjoy puzzles very much.

But mostly I enjoy challenging myself to figure it out on my own.

44

issue 02 | FALL 2012

There is much debate over the validity of Photoshop manipulation vs. authentic images. What is your take on the subject? My take is that there are myriad forms of art, and whether that is a base photograph for a person or a base photograph that is then tastefully reconstructed, it really is a matter of preference. I have an appreciation for both. And nowadays we have the tools to do nearly anything we wish with photography, which is a beautiful thing! My aim with my work is to take a very strong base image and then utilize modern-day technology to take that base image and make it into an alternate reality, mood, or universe that best expresses the whatever it is I am going for at that particular moment. Sometimes I don’t do much manipulation at all, really. It all just depends. I’m very much in an experimentation phase at this point. Just trying to learn who I am and what I like best. For those people who scoff at photographers who enjoy utilizing Photoshop, I feel that they just haven’t learned to appreciate all of the aspects of art that surround photography now. As long as people are creating and expressing themselves, that is really what matters most. Not who has the best camera or who is a purist.

(bottom left) Cradling Hyperion - Day #171 (top right) Self-reflection - Day #160

How has the use of photo-editing tools influenced your photography? For one thing, the camera I am currently shooting with is considered by many to be a very low-end DSLR and pretty much outdated at this point. With editing, I am able to correct a lot of the things that tend to lower the quality of the images that my camera can take. Not only that, but it opens up an entire world to me that wasn’t available even 10 years ago. I can truly create the surreal fantasy images that I often like to create. To be able to take what is in my head and translate it into a tangible form that I can then share with anyone who’d like to see--that’s a pretty amazing thing, really. What is your favourite 365 image so far and why? For now, Day #177, Nature’s Cradle. There are a lot of reasons, but one of the big ones is that that is one of two shots taken of that particular image. My camera stopped properly functioning, and so what I got was what I got, and I was very pleased with it. I love nature with all of my heart, and to be physically immersed in it for a photograph was one of the most rewarding images I’ve created thus far. The rough texture of the rocks contrasted by my calm expression and the smoothness of the water I really feel worked out. I also liked how impromptu it was, right down to the pose. That water was freezing! But I was proud of myself for holding a serene posture while floating there.

You’re just over halfway through your 365 project, correct? Where do you think your final 365 image will take you? Yes, just barely got past that hump. I honestly have no idea--it’s intimidating to think about at this point, so I don’t. A lot of my dailies are things I figure out the day of, and it feels more natural that way for me. The thing is that I recognize how much my style is continually changing and also how my skills have advanced since I began, so it’s nearly impossible for me to know where I’ll be at at the end of all of this. But one thing I know is that it will be a huge relief to be done with it. I’ll be relieved and also very grateful to myself for doing it. What is next for you after you put this monumental project to bed? Difficult to say! I will likely start up a weekly photo project, and I definitely intend to continue with collaborations with local designers and other fellow artists, because it is such a joy. All I know for certain is that I never want to stop creating art. It is the one thing I know I should always do, no matter what my circumstances are.

Anything you want to add? To anyone who takes on this project: be prepared to watch yourself transform. Be prepared to hate this project, but also be prepared to love it. Be prepared to learn more about yourself than you every thought imaginable. You definitely have to go into it with the right attitude, otherwise the growth and discoveries may not come as readily. And lastly, I say this to both myself and to anyone reading: don’t let anyone stop you from following your heart and your dreams. That includes yourself. Don’t create your own barriers. Always move forward, and never let go of whatever it is that is most important to you.

Every season brings new fashion trends that launch off the runway and into our closets. Fall/Winter 2012 trends include the following: • • • • • • • • • •

High Collars/Turtlenecks Oversized pockets Head to toe leather Statement Hats Peplum Sportswear Colourful fur and faux fur Loooooooong coats Menswear inspired Military inspired

Colour Me Bruised: Black & Blue The “it” color combination of the season is most definitely black and navy blue. Think bruised, ouchy colours with a fashion edge. Looking for a new, goto fashionista uniform? Ditch the head-to-toe black and simply mix in black’s closest color friend: dark midnight blue... Go for a thin, layering black turtleneck under a slouchy navy sweater, with black tights and a navy pencil skirt. Easy peasy.

Here are a few of our favorites in detail...

Red Red Wine: Burgundy Deep, rich burgundy is the new black! This luscious spiced wine color screams fall and if you need to brighten up the look, go with a monochromatic palette that includes fire-engine red and hot, hot pink.

Colour Me Bruised: Black & Blue Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera Red Red Wine: Burgundy Tory Burch, Peter Som, Diane von Furstenberg

Hissy Fit: Reptile Prints

Winter Whites

Animal print always finds its way onto almost every runway, but this season it’s definitely scaled back. Sure, fish aren’t reptiles, but they’re cold-blooded and their scales produce amazing graphic patterns! Tortoiseshell, snake and lizard prints get freshened up this fall with a jolt of colour and richness.

Monochromatic is the key here with your whites speaking the same tonal language; so if you’re going to go for a whiteout, make sure your whites are the same tone and fall into either cool toned or warm toned whites. Nothing will make your crisp, warm white, oxford shirt look dingier than when it’s paired with crisp cool white jeans or linen trousers.

Leather-tip-to-toe When donning your fall leather, don’t be afraid to go for a head to toe look that includes a lot of texture. Keep it monochromatic, but add texture with shearling, embossing and ‘wrinkled’ pieces. If you want to walk on the lighter side of ‘rebel yell’, go for a sleek leather pencil skirt and a girly, collared blouse with a floral or lace pattern.

“ For she is a fair maiden, fairest lady of a house of queens. And yet I know not how I should speak of her. When I first looked on her and perceived her unhappiness, it seemed to me that I saw a white flower standing straight and proud, shapely as a lily, and yet knew that it was hard, as if wrought by elfwrights out of steel. Or was it, maybe, a frost that had turned its sap to ice, and so it stood, bitter-sweet, still fair to see, but stricken, soon to fall and die? ~ Tolkien
