Shane Schnitzer, Chairman, Fresh Markets Australia The 2016 year was a productive and full period for FMA across all areas of the organisation and the wholesaling sector generally. It was also the year that I clocked up a decade on the Board – a decade that I am proud to say has seen FMA develop into a stronger and even more respected national industry body.

Horticulture Code of Conduct The key focus for FMA during 2016 was the ongoing work associated with the Horticulture Code of Conduct review to ensure a workable, commercially fair, pro-competitive Code was delivered by the Government for the industry. This work continues in 2017 with the revised Code introduced on 1 April. FMA has shown industry leadership, funded a wellresourced campaign and we were heard loud and clear, particularly in Canberra. While responding to ongoing criticism of the old Code, the Government was also seeking to address issues raised by the Horticulture Code Review Panel and the ACCC in relation to wholesalers’ payment terms/late payments, the lack of pricing transparency and their view that the dispute resolution mechanisms in the old Code did not work. Offering increased flexibility and a reduction in the prescriptive clauses which contributed to making the old Code unworkable, the new Code will however, impose new requirements on wholesalers and it will provide for ongoing oversight by the ACCC and the introduction of monetary penalties for breaches. I call on the ACCC to act in good faith in their dealings with wholesalers and acknowledge that there is no evidence of systemic issues, particularly given the fact that there have been an estimated 120 million transactions over the course of the past decade and they have taken action on only 12 occasions over the same period. I also callout the fact that the Government did not release the finalised new Code until late March 2017, giving FMA only days to provide support to our wholesalers. In spite of the Government’s tardiness, FMA has invested in education and training resources, standard Terms of Trade and Horticulture Produce Agreements and a national dispute resolution service, to support strong compliance and good business practices within the wholesaling

sector. A skilled training provider was engaged to roll out Code education and training by way of workshops to all wholesaler members across all Central Markets with the assistance of technical specialists from each State Chamber. The support will not end there – FMA will ensure resources are available digitally along with each State Chamber taking the day to day support role. FMA is committed to providing a facilitative National Dispute Resolution Service for growers that is easy to access, has appropriately trained staff adhering to well documented policies and procedures to address and investigate disputes. To provide transparency the aim is to record, analyse and publish/report the number of enquiries and disputes on FMA and State Chamber websites.

Working Together FMA continues to work collaboratively with our State Chambers as well as maintaining and building working relationships with key supply chain partners. I would like to particularly call out the support from Toyota Material Handling for their continued commitment to FMA, the Central Markets, State Chambers and wholesalers. Our focus across 2016 and into 2017 has been on developing efficiencies for the wholesaling sector through work with the likes of CHEP, Freshcare and Telstra. We are also well underway with a feasibility study looking at a National Independent Retailer Program to support the marketing of independent greengrocers. Announcements will be made across 2017 as each of these is finalised.

Industry Commitment FMA has long been a supporter of national industry conferences, joining our annual conference to PMA Fresh Connections in 2012, then in 2015 and 2016 joined with CMAA under the joint banner of Australia’s Fresh Produce Markets to partner at Fresh Connections and AusVeg conferences. As big supporters of the National Convention and PMA Fresh Connections over the years, we have been strong advocates of the two events coming together to form one national event. In 2017 this will happen and FMA looks forward to showcasing Central Markets and our Wholesalers alongside CMAA, at Hort Connections 2017 in Adelaide in May.

ABOUT US

Chairman’s Report

Food safety is a cornerstone of our industry and FMA contributes to the food safety debate, notably as part of FANZ’s National Food Safety Incident Response Forum. This group was actively involved in the rockmelon food safety incident in 2016 – which successfully coordinated a national approach to the occurrence. FMA was able to keep the wholesaling industry well informed. FMA, again committed to be a bronze sponsor of the Fresh Produce Safety Centre to support their work in strengthening collaboration on the critical issue of food safety in the fresh produce industry. Once again, FreshTest joined the Fresh Produce Safety Conference as a conference partner, using the occasion to welcome over 100 food safety professionals to the conference.

Our Fresh Brands The FMA brand was launched in 2015 after 75 years operating under the Australian Chamber name. The new look has been well received and well recognised and we are now set to launch the rebranded FMA sub brands. FreshTest™ and FreshSpecs™ and the newly coined FreshCode™ complete the Fresh look for all FMA initiatives. FreshTest™ continues as a key FMA initiative and is going from strength to strength and has certainly become the industry standard in Chemical Testing. FMA makes sure that all Chemicals forming a FreshTest™ test are regularly updated to maintain relevance – using FreshTest™ as your testing provider will make sure you are using the most relevant and up-to-date testing regime. FreshSpecs™ was introduced by FMA in 2006 in response to the need for produce specifications to support wholesalers when the original Hort Code was introduced. The Government has codified FreshSpecs™ as the default produce specification in the new Code. FreshCode™ is a newly developed FMA initiative which will provide wholesalers with resources, education and training in relation to the new Code.

Financial Stability FMA continues to build a strong business, growing solid revenue streams over the last six years. Any surplus is used to put back into the organisation to support ongoing initiatives, advocacy and industry representation.

Secretariat Brismark continues to provide sound support as the FMA Secretariat, particularly the role played in the Hort Code review process. This is greatly appreciated and on behalf of the Board, I acknowledge and thank Brismark for their contribution.

The Year Ahead It goes without saying that supporting wholesalers with the implementation of the new Hort Code will be FMA’s highest priority over the course of the coming year, with wholesalers operating under the original Code needing to consider their current Terms of Trade and HPA’s and ensure compliance. We will also support those wholesalers with pre-Code agreements to transition to the new compliance requirements. Again, I call on the ACCC to act in good faith in their dealings with wholesalers and acknowledge that there is no evidence of systemic issues, as well as calling out the Government for its tardiness for not releasing the finalised new Code until late March 2017, giving FMA ony days to provide support to our wholesalers. As I said last year – Without properly functioning Central Wholesale Markets, Australia’s fresh fruit and vegetable supply chain would collapse. FMA is not about to let this happen! In conclusion, I thank the FMA Board for their leadership and support and the attention they have given to the Hort Code review process with a unified national approach. An additional thanks to Toyota Material Handling for their partnership, and the state and federal jurisdictions for the continued collaboration with FreshTest™.

FMA Policy Position Fresh Markets Australia has a number of underpinning policies that support the organisation and has further developed policies on issues that arise from time to time.

Industry Self Regulation Fresh Markets Australia opposes any form of specific Government intervention and/or regulation of Markets wholesalers on the basis that it is anticompetitive and discriminates against one sector in the fruit and vegetable industry. However, Fresh Markets Australia strongly supports industry self-regulation, including codes of practice.

Terms Of Trade Fresh Markets Australia supports the use of documented terms of trade, which include method of doing business, price determination, supplier obligations, transfer of title and risk, payment terms, non complying produce and dispute resolution.

Dispute Resolution Fresh Markets Australia encourages all wholesalers to have an internal disputes resolution procedure, which they publish in writing. Suppliers and other industry participants are encouraged to attempt to resolve the dispute directly with the wholesaler in the first instance. In the event that the dispute cannot be resolved, either party is encouraged to contact the Chamber in the Markets where the wholesaler is located. If the relevant Chamber cannot resolve the dispute to the parties’ satisfaction the parties are advised to seek resolution of the dispute under The Horticulture Code of Conduct.

Food Safety And FreshTest™ Fresh Markets Australia supports wholesalers, suppliers and buyers adopting procedures that seek to improve food safety in the fruit and vegetable industry, in particular the adoption of independently audited HACCP based quality assurance schemes.

Fresh Markets Australia as an owner member of Freshcare recommends this as the industry standard for all growers of fresh produce and supports wholesalers in encouraging their suppliers to be Freshcare certified. Fresh Markets Australia encourages all Members, wholesalers, suppliers and buyers to support FreshTest™, the industry standard and most cost effective and comprehensive testing program in the fresh produce industry.

Product Specifications And FreshSpecs™ Fresh Markets Australia supports the use of uniform product standards for fresh produce and recommends that Members and wholesalers support FreshSpecs™ as the industry standard for class one (or equivalent) produce.

Quarantine Requirements Fresh Markets Australia supports quarantine restrictions imposed by a Government regulatory authority, which have been adopted to prevent or control any pest or disease outbreak, and which limit the movement and sale of fresh fruit and vegetable products.

Promotion Fresh Markets Australia is supportive of promotion of the central markets system and the benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables for a healthy lifestyle. Member Chambers are encouraged to participate in promotions at local and national level, particularly where this includes supplier and buyer involvement. Cooperation between Members of Member Chambers on national promotions is encouraged. Where wholesalers contribute financially to promotions, their contributions should be matched by contributions from suppliers and/or buyers and the wholesalers should have meaningful representation on relevant committees that direct campaigns and the expenditure of promotion funds. Cooperation with contributing suppliers and supplier groups on individual product promotion is encouraged.

ABOUT US

Levies Fresh Markets Australia is supportive of wholesalers receiving a fee for the deduction, accounting and remittance of compulsory levies.

Fees For Services Fresh Markets Australia is generally supportive of wholesalers deducting fees in respect of services provided to third parties.

Goods And Services Tax Fresh Markets Australia opposes the broadening of the GST which would result in the removal of the exemption from fresh fruit and vegetables on the basis that there is no demonstrated benefit to the fresh fruit and vegetable supply chain or the community generally. The consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables by Australians must be increased for community health and economic sustainability reasons.

Horticulture Code of Conduct There have been multiple reviews in the ten years of struggle with an anti-competitive and inflexible mandatory Horticulture Code of Conduct.

The latest review has culminated in the introduction of a new mandatory Code which was effective from 1 April 2017 when the original Code lapsed. FMA supported the majority of the 13 of the Review Panels' recommendations, however opposed recommendations that did not promote a fair and workable outcome. It is the Government’s view that the new Code responds to the ongoing criticism of the original Code, addressing issues raised by the Horticulture Code Review Panel and the ACCC in relation to wholesalers’ payment terms/late payments, the lack of pricing transparency and their view that the dispute resolution mechanisms in the original Code do not work. FMA welcomes the new Code with the view that it will offer increased flexibility and a reduction in the prescriptive clauses which contributed to making the original Code unworkable, however, it will also impose new requirements on wholesalers (Traders) and it will provide for ongoing oversight by the ACCC and the introduction of monetary penalties for breaches. It is FMA’s view that the new Code is overly prescriptive without a justified basis and without recognition of the actual make-up of the industry in terms of the number of traders, their turnover and their relationships with growers. There is little doubt that the new Code remains draconian and anti-competitive given it applies to one sector of the industry and there is 50% of the industry conducting business in alternative and competing supply chains, with none of these mandatory requirements or penalty provisions. FMA supports an obligation on all parties to act in good faith, however the imposition of penalties for a breach of the good faith provision is rejected. It is FMA’s view that the inclusion of penalties where there is no established legal meaning for ‘good faith’ will create uncertainty and is open to possible vexatious claims. The Government has the

view that if a grower or trader wish to contest the ACCC’s interpretation of good faith then that may be done in court, shows hypocritical disregard for clarity and transparency in the Code – it delivers the exact opposite of the objective they were seeking for the Code to achieve. FMA can only wonder why the major retail chains have escaped any Government scrutiny during the review process. According to IBIS World 2017, the major supermarket chains have 78.9% market share and a turnover of $105b and operate under a Voluntary Code that has no penalty provisions. Whereas the wholesaling sector of the fresh produce industry has an $11.6b turnover across 1,600 wholesalers (IBIS World 2017) who are delivered a mandatory Code with penalties up to $54,000 (300 penalty units) each across 13 separate different breaches of the Code

“The ongoing hypocrisy of the Government in relation to the heavy handed use of penalties in relation to the Code and its treatment and misrepresentation of traders is noted.” FMA has taken their leadership role as the national industry body for the wholesaling sector very seriously and since its introduction have demonstrated a wholehearted commitment to the new Code. FMA has invested in education and training resources, standard Terms of Trade and Horticulture Produce Agreements and a national dispute resolution service, to support strong compliance and good business practices within the wholesaling sector. A skilled training provider was engaged to roll out Code education and training by way of workshops to all wholesaler members across all Central Markets with the assistance of technical specialists from each state Chamber.

Gary has been an active member of Brismark for more than 30 years and has the honour of being one of the longest serving directors of the Brismark Board. Gary was described as a strong supporter and contributor to the community, providing aid after natural disasters such as cyclones, the Queensland flood and the Victorian Bush Fire appeals.

“He is humble, passionate and kind, and it’s these qualities that have seen Brismark flourish under Gary’s leadership on the Board.” He is a staunch supporter of FMA and the Central Markets push for a fairer, more workable and cost effective mandatory Horticulture Code of Conduct. As Gary was not in attendance, Hamish Montague, Deputy Chairman of FMA, and Director of Brismark accepted the award on his behalf.

“For those here tonight that know Gary and have seen his tireless effort to unify our industry, I am sure you will agree that this award is well deserved,” said Mr Montague. “Gary is one to shy away from the limelight, not wanting to take credit when credit is most definitely due. But this humbleness is what makes Gary one of our industry’s most passionate stalwarts. When Gary speaks, others listen,” he said. “He is humble, passionate and kind, and it’s these qualities that have seen Brismark flourish under Gary’s leadership on the Board.”

South Australian Flood Appeal In September 2016, Primary Producers in South Australia were greatly impacted by floods with an estimated 1500ha under water in the Northern Adelaide Plains (NAP), after the Gawler River burst its bank causing much havoc to the horticulture region. Losses in the NAP were estimated around $50 million. Product lines were affected with local supplies interrupted. Recovery was expected to take at least six months with many challenges surrounding seed volumes to resew crops, management for surviving crops, weed and insect damage as well as widespread infrastructure damage that occurred. The South Australian Produce Market in conjunction with Market Fresh SA (Pick a Local, Pick SA!) and the South Australian Chamber of Fruit and Vegetables, a truly Wholesaler and Market led fundraiser dedicated to help the South Australian horticulture community, called upon all industry members, businesses and members of the public, to help raise funds to go towards the purchase of seedlings and assist in re-establishing viable crops for the future, ensuring all affected producers could get back on track as soon as possible. The wholesale community across Australia donated $40,000 and the SA Government $50,000. Market Fresh SA is pleased to announce that thanks

to the generosity of many Australians, the South Australian Flood Appeal raised a total $152,000 to help these growers purchase seedlings for their next growing season! In addition, a partnership with Foodbank SA, The Horticultural Coalition of SA and AusVeg SA was also formed, to help run the sector-wide industry appeal using Foodbank’s charitable entity status and website as a pathway for dedicated funds collation. Market Fresh SA assisted in the production of numerous media releases, videos and editorials among other activities. The appeal generated significant community interest, resulting in invaluable exposure across all media (radio interviews, news feeds: TV and social, press etc).

The successful Chamber led industry bid, now known as Perth Markets Limited (PML), was announced as the preferred bidder of the government owned Market City site on 16 December 2015. A large number of industry investors, including the Chamber, have put their hard earned capital into the future of the central market process allowing the owners of Market City to be truly classified as an industry consortium. The consortium is particularly confident of ongoing growth and was strengthened by key investment from Brisbane Markets and the South Australian Produce Markets. Obviously since then a lot of hard work and serious negotiations have been done with the State to allow transition to PML and industry ownership early in 2016. Market City is nearing the end of its first year of private ownership by PML. With the industry now in control of its own destiny from an independent perspective, this in turn provides additional challenges. In particular, the whole site will now be subject to statutory costs of council rates and land tax. Managing the increased costs will prove challenging, however there are opportunities for efficiencies and initiatives as well as opportunities for external partnerships in relation to development of the available unused land on the site. A site Master Plan is under review as part of PML’s forward strategy and this should allow the site to flourish and continue to provide the best value to the industry as a central market. Logistically Market City provides an advantage for the fresh produce being in the southern corridor only 20kms on close to key road and freeways with access north and south of the city. Market West will continue to work with the landlord to protect our members interests. Market West’s relationship with PML has strengthened through our shareholding and PML Board members but also in a general management relationship through the reduction of bureaucratic red tape resulting from private ownership. We look forward to seeing Market City enhance its vital role in the provision, distribution and consumption of fresh produce.

The Queensland Chamber of Fruit and Vegetable Industries Co-operative Limited was formally established as an Association of Market Wholesalers in 1941.

Owning shares in Brisbane Markets Limited has been a hard fought strategic initiative that has benefited all of Brismark’s members, and something we will fight hard to keep.

This first move towards unity was largely prompted by the introduction of war related legislation – Wholesalers collectively had no input to this legislation, due to the lack of a representative voice.

The current Brismark Board of Directors will work hard to honour the legacy of the past, and to ensure that Brismark, its Members and the Central Markets System remains viable and is here for at least the next 75 years.

Last year was Brismark’s 75th anniversary, and as we look back on this milestone we see how Brismark has transformed from an organisation reliant largely on commercial trading operations to a respected industry organisation providing representation for services to its Members and the Industry.

Thoughts from the chair, Brismark Chairman Gary Lower, Fresh Source – Special Edition Spring 2016

Defining moments When I look back on these 75 years, the defining moments that come to mind was the establishment of the Credit Service, Bad Debt Reserve, and the Brisbane Markets® acquisition by Landacq Limited. One of the most significant achievements for Members and the industry generally was the establishment of the Credit Service in 1973 and the Bad Debt Reserve 10 years later. It’s hard to believe that in 1983 throughput at the time was $133 million. Fast-forward to just last financial year, where throughput topped $661 million!

Buying Brisbane Markets® An extraordinary effort of commitment and professionalism of the then Executive and negotiating team were critical to the successful bid to buy the Brisbane Markets® from the State Government, with Landacq Limited being named the successful bidder in 2002. So what does the future hold for our industry and for Brismark’s Members? For me, industry ownership remains paramount, to ensure Wholesalers have an appropriate level of influence in respect of the operation, management and development of the Brisbane Markets®.

Brismark 75th Anniversary

FreshTest™ – by industry for industry Gail Woods, Executive Officer, Fresh Markets Australia After 16 years, the FreshTest™ logo has been updated to reflect the FMA brand. Introduced in 2001, FreshTest™ is a FMA initiative which was in direct response to the number of requests from Industry to manage and collate the results from all Chemical and Microbial testing. FreshTest™ continues to be used by industry to independently verify compliance with good agricultural practices in food safety systems related to chemical use, microbial levels and heavy metal traces. The overall aim of FreshTest™ is to: • Provide cost effective, third party verification of production and packing businesses food safety systems • Coordinate the thousands of tests being conducted, facilitating the useful consolidation of data for official purposes • Coordinate a chemical residue, microbial and heavy metal testing service operating from wholesale markets where coordination is most easily achieved. Since its introduction FreshTest™ has grown to become the largest and most comprehensive horticultural residue-testing program undertaken in Australia. It continues to grow as more industry participants make use of the facility.

System of Investigation The FreshTest™ program includes a strict system of investigation, corrective action and retesting following the detection of • Pesticide residues in a commodity which exceed the relevant maximum residue limit (MRLs). The program provided industry-driven self-regulation which helps to manage the responsible use of pesticides. All residue testing results are assessed against MRLs stipulated in the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Code (Standard 1.4.2 – Schedule 20 and 21). • Microbial levels in a commodity which exceed the relevant maximum limits as determined by various food safety bodies (see below) • Traces of heavy metals in a commodity which

exceed the relevant maximum limit stipulated in the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Code (Standard 1.4.1 – Schedule 19). The MRLs are adopted into State/Territory Food Codes and appropriate regulations are administered by respective state/territory food authorities. In the case of an MRL exceedance, FreshTest™ requests a report on the causes of the incident and proposed corrective actions to be implemented to prevent a recurrence. Investigations have identified areas to support industry such as adherence to the chemical product label, withholding periods, spray drift and possible off-label use.

Chemical Screens A range of Chemical residue screens are currently undertaken. 1. FreshTest™ C3 Basic Screen – GCMS (GC) Gas chromatography – (MS) Mass Spectrometer (128 chemicals) 2. FreshTest™ C6 Full Screen – LCMSMS (LC) Liquid chromatography – (MS/MS) Mass Spectrometer (25 chemicals) 3. FreshTest™ C4 – Dithiocarbamates (7 chemicals) FreshTest™ developed these screens which have become industry standards. Only FreshTest™ updates these screens through regular reviewed based on assessment of: • Previous results and produce coverage • Availability of suitable sampling and analytical methods • Likelihood of residues occurring in produce • Chemicals registered for use • Advice from agronomists • Consultation and coordination with National Residue Survey. To be sure that the most recent updates are included, use FreshTest™ for your verification testing. Annually FreshTest™ tests for over 350,000 chemicals.

Freshcare Clare-Hamilton Bate, Executive Officer, Freshcare Ltd Freshcare was developed by the fresh produce industry, in response to the need for a practical, cost effective, industry focussed food safety program. Based on Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), Freshcare was designed to allow it to be implemented by all grower businesses, regardless of crop, size and location. Freshcare continues to operate as an industry-led, not-for-profit program. Over the last 17 years, the Freshcare Food Safety & Quality standard has undergone regular reviews, to ensure it incorporates the most current science, remains practical and relevant for industry and complies with the requirements of its many users including growers, packers and the processing, retail and export market sectors. Freshcare Environmental standards were initially developed in 2006 and service both the fresh produce and wine grape sectors. Now in its 17th year of operation, Freshcares’ practical approach to helping growers and packers provide an assurance to customers that their produce is safe to eat and has been grown sustainably, has seen over 5,500 fresh produce and wine grape grower businesses adopt the program, making it Australia’s largest and most widely adopted on farm assurance program.

Freshcare Food Safety & Quality moves to accredited certification Historically, Freshcare operated as a private industry standard. However, to maintain its broad industry and market acceptance, in February 2016 the Freshcare Food Safety & Quality Standard (FSQ) was approved by JAS-ANZ* to operate as an accredited standard under ISO/IEC17065:2012. All Freshcare FSQ certificates will transition to accredited certification during 2017 as individual audits fall due. Accredited certification provides a more formal structure of Certification Body approval and compliance. As an accredited certification, an independent ‘check of the checkers’ takes place to provide a greater certainty and consistency of process. This ensures that all Certification Bodies audit their clients consistently, in accordance with Freshcares’ clearly defined standards, in an impartial

manner and always on the basis of evidence. The auditors from those accredited Certification Bodies are required to formally demonstrate competence to audit to that agreed standard. Whilst much of the rigour enforced through accredited certification was already in place when Freshcare operated as a private scheme (we reviewed Certification Body performance, set auditor competencies and checked audit reports) the independent recognition of the process through accreditation is key to the ongoing acceptance of Freshcare as a certification standard, both domestically and internationally. *JAS-ANZ – The Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand Accreditation: verifies that a Certification Body has an appropriate management system in place to ensure they manage an agreed certification process, consistently and in accordance with agreed criteria. Certification: is the process through which a Certification Body confirms a participating business has the appropriate systems in place to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the Freshcare standard.

Freshcare benchmarking to the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) A key driver in Freshcares’ move to accredited certification is the retailer driven requirement for Freshcare to be benchmarked to the Global Food Safety Initiative. The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), provides an international ‘benchmark model’ against which other standards can be assessed. The GFSI process enables customers to accept fresh produce from suppliers with any food safety system that is recognised as equivalent to GFSI - knowing that an agreed standard of compliance will have been achieved. Already in Australia, GFSI benchmarked systems are required for direct supply to both Costco and ALDI. This requirement is likely to extend to all major customer groups, initially for direct supply, but ultimately, in time, for indirect supply from farm level – so Freshcare needs to be prepared.

Freshcare Standards – New Editions In June 2016, Freshcare launched the fourth edition of its Food Safety and Quality Standard (FSQ4), and the third edition of the Freshcare Environmental Standard (ENV3). The new standards are more practical and streamlined, have a better structural alignment and have improved access to guidance material. All Freshcare audits from the 1st January 2017 are against the new edition standards FSQ4 and ENV3. Copies of the Freshcare FSQ4 and ENV3 Standards can be downloaded from the Freshcare website: www.freshcare.com.au. Freshcare - GLOBALG.A.P benchmark initiative Australian growers looking to enter key export markets are set to save significant cost and complication, with Freshcare seeking to provide a mechanism for compliance with both global and domestic food-safety certification requirements. The popular, industry led Freshcare Food Safety and Quality Standard (FSQ4) has commenced the benchmark process against the widely accepted GLOBALG.A.P. Standard to provide an export market version for Australian growers. The new initiative being delivered through Horticulture Innovation Australia – using vegetable industry levy funds and funds from the Australian Government – in partnership with peak industry body AUSVEG, will have a significant impact for growers in many export sectors. Historically, growers have had to undertake a lengthy, complicated and costly transition to implement an entirely new food safety standard (GLOBALG.A.P. – standalone) for export market access. Successful completion of benchmarking, and recognition of the Freshcare Standard by GLOBALG.A.P., would enable Australian growers to build on their existing food safety and quality certification (Freshcare) as a streamlined compliance process to access export markets. The initial step in the process was to identify / clarify the requirements for Good Agricultural Practice (G.A.P) in the key export markets for Australian fresh produce, including a number of Asian markets and the Middle East; considering required scope/s – food safety, quality, environmental, biosecurity, worker welfare, etc. With the scope of the benchmark confirmed, a gap analysis of the Freshcare Food Safety & Quality Standard (FSQ4) was conducted against the requirements of GLOBALG.A.P. Certification (v5.0) A Freshcare ‘Bolt on’ based on outcomes of Step 1 and Step 2 is now being developed to include as part of the formal benchmark submission to GLOBALG.A.P. Regular project updates will be provided through both the Freshcare website and industry communications, with the project due for completion by late 2017. For more information contact Clare Hamilton-Bate via email clare@freshcare.com.au or phone 1300 853 508 / 0407 930 586.

Now an accredited certification, Freshcare has achieved the first step on the path to GFSI benchmark status; the next step is to submit a draft benchmark document to GFSI for review. However, the full benchmark cannot be submitted until early 2018, when Freshcare has operated as an accredited certification for 12 months. If everything goes to plan, Freshcare hopes to be fully GFSI benchmarked by mid/ late 2018.

Getting Involved in Freshcare For growers new to Freshcare, the process is designed to be as easy as possible, but at the same time ensuring all Freshcare participating businesses have a strong understanding and ownership of the system they implement on farm. The following is provided as a guide for businesses discussing the path to Certification with their suppliers.

Training It is a requirement of the Freshcare Program that every business has a team member who completes approved Freshcare training. Training provides a clear understanding of on-farm issues and establishes the requirements for program implementation and management on-farm. A number of training options are available, including the online ‘Freshcare eLearning’, group workshops and one-on-one farm visits. Visit the Freshcare website or contact the Freshcare office, for training options and contact details of regional trainers.

Implementation Once training has been completed, it’s time to implement the system on farm. Freshcare Trainers are responsible for guiding businesses through a streamlined process from initial registration to full certification and should be contacted for any queries or problems encountered during implementation. There is a requirement for some verification testing (product, water etc.) to support the program implementation. This will vary based on risks identified by the individual business and will be covered in training.

Audit Once the Freshcare system has been implemented and the business is ready for audit, they need to contact a Freshcare Certification Body to schedule an audit. To become Freshcare certified the business must first successfully complete and pass an audit. Visit the Freshcare website for Certification Body details. The cost of an audit is set by the individual Certification Bodies; they should be contacted directly for detailed cost information on the services required.

Certification Once a business has successfully completed their audit, they will be issued with a Freshcare Certificate. Certificates are issued electronically for ease of communication, hard copies can be issued on request. Freshcare Certificates are valid for 13 months. Audits are due 12 months from previous date of audit.

Contact Freshcare For more information on any aspect of the Freshcare Program, visit the Freshcare website at www. freshcare.com.au or contact the Freshcare Office on 1300 853 508, or email info@freshcare.com.au.

One of the most commonly heard criticisms of quality assurance in the fresh produce sector is the duplication of systems or standards that an individual business may face when supplying more than one major customer.

Standards (Freshcare, GLOBALG.A.P., SQF or BRC). Businesses supplying direct to retail customers can now undertake a single audit against an approved base standard + HARPS, that will satisfy all customers, rather than having audits against multiple standards.

Whilst the systems/standards may be almost identical in content, the fact that no one system is accepted by all customers’ usually results in extended audit time, extended reporting time and resultantly significant cost.

Under HARPS all indirect suppliers will be required to be certified to one of the approved ‘base standards’; for the majority of growers and grower packers Freshcare FSQ4 continues to provide the most appropriate on-farm certification.

Certification Bodies try to equip their auditors to deal with this duplication, but for large producers, supplying several of the major retail chains and/or food service providers, the duplication in compliance is often a costly, time consuming nightmare. It’s not uncommon for a business to have to demonstrate compliance to five separate, yet similar standards.

For more information on HARPS visit www.harpsonline.com.au.

The “QA Harmonisation” project funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA) was undertaken to try and address this issue in the fresh produce sector. The project has been supported by the five biggest grocery retailers in Australia, namely Coles, Woolworths, ALDI, Costco and Metcash. It is estimated that the fresh produce market share covered by these businesses is approximately 70% of the total Australian market. The outcome of the QA Harmonisation project is the Harmonised Australian Retailer Produce Scheme (HARPS). CENTRAL MARKETS

Brisbane Markets is Queensland’s major marketing and distribution hub for the supply of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Brismark, 2016 – in brief Andrew Young, CEO Brismark and CEO Brisbane Markets Limited It was a landmark year for Brismark, celebrating its 75th anniversary and seeing off the eight month unsolicited and hostile takeover bid for Brisbane Markets Limited (BML), by Sydney-based private equity firm, VGI partners who failed to lure enough wholesalers and shareholders into selling out. This consolidated the view of the Brismark and BML Boards and shareholders have, that industry based ownership is still the only way to continue the success of Queensland’s largest fresh produce hub. Brismark holds a strategic stake in BML, with a 35 percent shareholding.

Program Delivery

The ongoing focus on representation and service delivery, with a number of established strategic priorities across our business and operational areas is maintained. Operationally, our key priorities continue in the area of Credit Service, the expansion of our Member Services offerings, the continued growth of our Retailer Program and the provision of a Secretariat for Fresh Markets Australia.

Following its revamp in 2015, the Retailer Program (Your Local Fruit Shop) has continued to evolve. As well as a number of consumer campaigns the initiative was rounded out with a series of retailer workshops, a media tour which saw key journalists and bloggers tour the market, ambassador sponsorship arrangements with Chef Dom Rizzo and Olympian Alana Boyd, the annual Act of Kindness (AOK) mango fundraiser and Mango Auction.

Under the banner of the Brisbane Produce Market, Brismark and BML jointly fund marketing and communication initiatives which focus on the promotion of Brisbane Markets and support Brismark's strategic objectives. In particular: • promoting the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables • working with industry entities such as retailers, secondary wholesalers and fruit and vegetable representative groups. Retailer Program - Your Local Fruit Shop

Horticulture Code of Conduct There has been an ongoing focus over the past 18 months on pursuing a fair and measured outcome to the review of the Horticulture Code of Conduct.

Market research conducted in December 2016 indicates that the program is having a positive effect on influencing consumers to shop at their local fruit shop – see more on the opposite page.

As well the Credit Service, Brismark offers its Members a broad range of services including HR/IR advice, a recruitment service, training and development, Workplace Health and Safety advice and support through manuals and safety scans, Quality Assurance and HACCP advisory services and manuals, produce testing through FreshTest, and a range of other services.

As a new strategic initiative, the Brismark Board invested in BuyFruit an on-line shopping platform, which provides independent retailers with access to a marketing channel which continues to stimulate consumer interest and increasing levels of support. BuyFruit is available to Your Local Fruit Shop retailer program members.

In the retail space, Brismark acquired major ownership of BuyFruit.com.au to help Your Local Fruit Shop retailers compete in the rapidly growing online fresh food market. BuyFruit delivers fresh produce and grocery items straight to the customers door, direct from the Your Local Fruit Shop member. The introduction of this technology will revolutionise how Your Local Fruit Shop owners grow their business. Local online shopping as a whole, has exploded in popularity over the past five years and is predicted to see substantial growth with more than half of Australian consumers saying they will use an online order and delivery service. By investing in new technologies like this, Brismark is helping retail program members get established early in this growing market.

Campaigns themed around the four pillars will continue in 2017, although compressed into three larger and more focused campaigns, while still retaining a substantial element of traditional media advertising, more emphasis will be placed on digital and social elements to each campaign. SA Chamber, 2016 – in brief George Giameos, Manager, SA Chamber of Fruit & Vegetable Industries Inc Membership over the past year decreased by 2 members to give us 37 members in total. Late in 2016, Premier Fruits was merged with the existing Lamanna Bananas business. Quality Lines exited the market with one of the neighbouring wholesalers – Ceravolo Orchards acquiring the store. Outgoings continue to be an issue within the market with the figure approaching approximately 50% in addition to the yearly rental rate. The SA Chamber has written to the board of the South Australian Produce Market expressing their concerns. Together both parties are looking at ways of reducing the current expense. Electricity was high on the agenda but wholesalers are working with the South Australian Produce Market to ensure the best possible rate is achieved. The SA Chamber also informed SAPM to investigate the SA Government grants that were available for large consumers. To date the electricity bill has reduced by 30% but South Australia still seems to pay more per KW hour than the other states. Pallets were discussed with the view of Retailers having an account. It was agreed that the SA Chamber would utilise the SAPM unloading service to have one CHEP account with all wholesalers and retailers falling under this account. Trials will begin early 2017 with a group of wholesalers and retailers.

In relation to SA Produce Credit Pty Ltd, sales decreased by 1.86% on the previous financial year. The retail base decreased by 8 stores hence the reason for the decrease. Membership of the Credit Service remains strong with approximately 80% of the retail customer base utilizing the service. We have 100% wholesaler participation in the system as well as a number of growers in the Growers pavilion utilizing the service. No bad debts were recorded in 2016. Together Market Fresh SA, the South Australian Chamber of Fruit and Veg and the South Australian Produce Market continue to support the independent retail sector operating within the fresh produce category, namely local greengrocers, in an effort to ensure the sustainability of the local supply chain and long term viability of the industry as a whole. I would also like to welcome Nadia Schutt who joined Market Fresh SA in early 2016 and Nadia Boscaini who joined the team in January 2017. Both are looking forward to further strengthening the relationship between Market Fresh SA and the independent retailers. Our long-term plan is to work on and contribute to the next stage of the strategy and continue to pursue the long-term vision of the business.

37

Activities such as in-store promotions, cooking demonstrations, product launches, trade shows, regional events and mascot appearances remain an important part of the marketing strategy. During 2016, Market Fresh SA helped launch a number of new product lines, celebrated milestones with various independent retailers and conducted regular tasting and cooking demonstrations throughout the year. The Royal Adelaide Show was considered a great success with 469,133 show goers over the 10-day period. Pick a Local, Pick SA! received great exposure being located directly behind the horticultural stage and adjacent the main stage. Red tipped eco bananas were given out as part of the Yellow Brick Road offering and again proved to be very popular with the crowds. A huge thank you goes out to George and Peter Koukos (and their grower) from D&G Fresh Fruit for their donation of this product and continued support. In

addition, we’d also like to thank Russo Produce who donated 500 sample bags of Bellita potatoes and provided much support throughout the show week, as well as Bache Bros., BD & MD Nicol & Son, Ceravolo Orchards, Costa Farms, Fresh Fruit For You, IG Fresh Produce and Pogas Produce for their generous produce donations. Market Fresh SA expanded their marketing strategy with a focus on a more integrated approach involving both push and pull tactics. Improvements were sought across the digital space with a Pick a Local, Pick SA! specific website (consumer facing) being developed to replace the Market Fresh SA site eliminating possible brand confusion. Social media was also evaluated and a more strategic approach taken. We now have 5990 likes, 5925 people following and have achieved greater reach. Pick a Local, Pick SA! was promoted through various media including local radio, TV, Newspaper and Transit / Outdoor advertising and as a result, we saw an increase in consumer engagement as well as brand recall. Greater engagement with local schools and participation in their various activities has also proven successful with the flow on effect being the development of a school eating program and plans to execute it in 2017. Market Fresh SA also partnered with Foodbank SA, local councils, industry members and government organisations to promote ‘healthier eating habits’, the importance of consumer buying decisions, especially when it comes to buying “local” and the need for greater support across the supply chain (consideration for local growers, particularly small to medium businesses). Our involvement with the Northern Adelaide Plains Marketing Strategy and the instigation, advertising, public relations and management of the South Australian Flood Appeal were examples of this.

Fresh State, 2016 – in brief Jason Cooper, CEO Fresh State Ltd. In 2016, we celebrated our first full year at the new Melbourne Market facility located in Epping, in Melbourne’s Northern suburbs. Overall, the move to Epping has had many advantages, however there have been a number of teething issues, many of which still need to be resolved by the government authority managing the site. The last 12 months has been a consolidation period for Fresh State, which was a welcome relief after the amount of effort required by both Fresh State and its board as we worked through the challenges created by the relocation. We have also enjoyed a good period of consistency over the last year as we have had no change in directors following our elections in September 2016. However, we did take the opportunity to re-structure the Fresh State team, and introduced a new role of Business Manager to assist in reviewing our office and Credit Service processes to ensure that we can continue to offer the best level of service possible to our members.

Melbourne Markets Credit Service - The Joint Venture with our members continues to grow from strength to strength, returning a healthy share dividend which was equal to the initial share offer, and an increase in share value during the period of over 36%. Our ongoing commitment to improving services to our members resulted in creating a paperless model within MMCS. We have now completely removed paper statements, all schedules are now done online, and all payments are completed by EFT. Fresh State Gas Station – the fit-out of our gas station is now complete. We have the only manned gas station within the market, and accept Cash, EFT, and a swipe card system to make it as easy and efficient as possible for all market users. Over the last year, we’ve also completed the canopy work to ensure that our users aren’t effected by the ‘four seasons in one day’ weather that Melbourne is well known for. As we move into our second year at the new facility, we’re looking forward to working closely with our members to ensure that we continue to support them to grow their businesses by making life at the market as efficient as possible to operate from.

The Heidelberg Golf Club was in stunning condition and Melbourne turned on the best autumn weather players could only dream about for the 2016 Melbourne Market Charity Golf Day. The Melbourne Market Golf Day and Monster Raffle raised over $70,000 which was donated to DEBRA Australia, a small charity which relies on third party donations to help those suffering with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). “We are overwhelmed with the result and thank everyone who supported this event” said Golf Day Chair Joe Amalfi. “When you see those children suffering from an incurable disease like EB you just want to make a difference to their lives and we have certainly done that today”. The Melbourne Market Golf Day is a tradition at the market and it is always great to see Fresh State members and the wider market community supporting the event and enjoying a day out on the fairways with their businesses while donating well needed money to charity. The event is co-hosted and coordinated by Fresh State, the Melbourne Market Authority and the Melbourne Market Lions Club.

Special guests on the day included AFL star Craig Bradley, 16 year old Eliza Baird who suffers from EB, AFL star John Platten and Family Support Coordinator for Debra Australia Simone Baird

Tilly’s life is consumed with medication and treatment including three hour bleach baths and bandage changes every second day. EB is likened to living with third degree burns all over the skin which blisters at the slightest touch. This extremely painful condition is debilitating and requires 24 hour a day care placing severe financial and emotional strain on the family.

Peter Holmes, Manager Newcastle Markets 2016 has seen steady funding for Newcastle Markets, and despite adverse weather throughout the year, wholesalers have reported solid levels of consumer confidence. Major retailers such as Coles, Woolworths and Aldi continue their stronghold in the retail market. Smaller retailers continue to feel the pressure of the supermarket "wars", but are also consolidating and working on their strengths. Farmers markets continue to put pressure on the retailers, with a large number of markets popping up across Newcastle and regional towns. In the Central Trading Area, we've continued with our planned general maintenance schedule, and are also upgrading the amenities in the market.

Aerial view of Newcastle Markets Circa 1997

The Credit Service is running smoothly, maintaining a steady volume of trade, and we’re negotiating with prospective new tenants that will potentially bring positive benefits to the market. 2016 also saw firm growth in servicing providores operating within the Newcastle Markets. We believe this will become a high growth area, with a large number of restaurants and food outlets continuing to open up across Newcastle and regional areas. In late 2016, there was a Safe Work NSW audit, which identified traffic management, lack of high visibility clothing and forklift safety as issues for consideration. We are putting measures in place to address these issues.

Market West, 2016 – in brief Rod McPherson, CEO, Market West Our business profile continues to evolve and a number of initiatives gathered momentum during the year. We formalised our transition to the Market West re-brand announced at the Market City Ball in July. The re-brand has been was well received by our members and the wider industry. The re-brand included a modernised website and established greater industry links to make it a friendlier and more informative product. A key component of our business model is the Credit Service. The credit service continues to function well and we are reviewing efficiencies that may be created by reviewing the member operating rules. Our key community events, Market City Ball and the Cherry Auction we both highly successful. The Market City Ball incorporates the Retailer of the Year awards and these were also hotly contested through the assessment process. The annual Cherry Auction produced excellent results given the current nature of the retail economy, achieving record level contributions. With private ownership of the markets, management of the Great Green Grocer (GGG) program reverted back to Market West, managing the program with existing resources and on a significantly reduced budget. Nonetheless, the program is running well and with a revised media plan, especially increasing our social media exposure we are achieving good results.

Over the course of 2016, Market West has increased service levels to members by offering flu vaccines to tenants, training courses in forklift licencing, safety, first aid and LPG refuelling operations. An outside agency, now also an affiliate member, was able to provide quality training at a reduced price on or offsite across key training areas. In late 2016, we announced the 2017 relaunch of FreshTest. Our members have most recently been using other options for produce verification testing. FreshTest can reduce costs and Market West is well equipped to co-ordinate the testing supported by the national FMA team. The Market West price reporting system was reviewed as it was apparent that existing price reporting had some reliability issues. We are currently developing alternative data collection strategies, including the source data to eliminate inconsistencies, streamlining the processes and increase data integrity. This will also create the ability to broaden the number of product lines that can be reported upon. The Market City site, WA’s central fresh produce markets, continues to operate similarly under private ownership with no real disruption to ‘business as usual’. We continue to work closely with the new owners and protect our member’s interests, contributing more directly to the operations of the site. Options are being considered for the development of a regular newsletter to keep our members and site users informed of current and emerging issues.

Great Green Grocer

At the Market City Ball in July 2016, we launched the new Market West trading name and branding. This was also incorporated to include the FPAA Credit Service to become Market West Credit Service.

The Great Green Grocer was previously a joint venture between the previous owner of Market City and Market West. Significant funding and resourcing was provided by the previous owner and this ceased on sale. The intellectual property (e.g. trademarks etc) is retained by Market West. We remain committed to this successful initiative and we continue that under our independent management and existing internal resourcing, albeit with significantly reduced financial sources.

The trading name is to reflect the growing industry and business trend of other State Chambers and culminated with The Australian Chamber changing its name to Fresh Markets Australia (FMA) in 2015. The legal entity of the ‘Chamber of Fruit and Vegetable Industries in Western Australia’ remains unchanged. The new trading name was to accurately represent the Chamber brand going forward, particularly in digital media, the sale of Market City and our role in the new era for the industry.

In line with the rebranding to Market West it was evident that the website needed a significant overhaul. We are very pleased with the design outcomes and the positive feedback received. It is far more user friendly, colourful and interactive. We encourage you to review the website and provide any relevant feedback or suggestions on the site. Go to www.marketwest.com.au

Nonetheless, an effective funding model was created and although some momentum had been lost during transition we have achieved good results to date under the new structure. With the engagement of limited outside consulting we have restructured the program, redefined the TVC’s including 15 second versions, developed effective digital and social media options and negotiated good value TV exposure with the 7West Media, Yahoo, outdoor advertising and other publications. We have new partnerships with WA Stonefruit, WA Grape Growers, Citrus WA and the Buy West Eat Best program with the Dept. of Agriculture. To date the results have been more than acceptable and we expect the program to grow further based on the current strategy. Recently, we entered in to an agreement with Brismark to utilise our TV commercials in their own independent retailer program.

Annual Cherry Auction

Business Services

In December 2016 we again held to Annual Cherry Auction in support of our charity partner Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation. Proceeds from the 2015 Cherry Auction helped purchase a Single Plane Digital Angiographic Interventional System. This state of the art equipment, referred to as a Hybrid Theatre, will enable staff to better care for children with extended capabilities and higher efficiencies than anything previously used at the hospital.

As part of our commitment to site safety and in line with our Dangerous Goods Licence requirements, almost 100 of Market West’s LPG user account representatives underwent refresher training in safe operation of the on-site gas bowser facility. This was carried out by our supplier, Kleenheat Gas, at no cost.

Given the current economic conditions the response was outstanding and we thank the industry for their continued support of the event. The total amount raised was $107,960 with the last box being snapped up for a record $55,000. The successful bidder was Sam Napoli of Napoli Mercato and Balcatta Fresh. As a result Sam was crowned ‘Cherry King’ for 2016. This took the total amount raised by the Market Community at Cherry Auctions to $1,017,000. Cherry Prince Alexey and Princess Clare also presented the Galati Group with a plaque commemorating their total donations to the Foundation of over $150,000 to date.

Newly crowned 2016 Cherry King, Sam Napoli of Napoli Mercato who paid $55,000 for his cherries

After counselling some of our members, we arranged on-site flu vaccine for 33 tenant employees (at a reduced cost). While this number is initially low we expect this to grow and help reduce absenteeism among member staff in the future. Previously on-site First Aid Training was organised by the previous Market City owner. Post sale of the site, we took on the responsibility for 1st Aid and Forklift training. An outside agency became an affiliate member and was able to provide quality training at a reduced price on or off-site as required.

The Annual Market City Ball was held at the Crown Ballroom in July 2016. The event was a great success and with a different vibe evident as guests were welcomed by a string trio and entertained with the operatic skills of the 3 Waiters. With additional sponsor support, 481 tenant and industry stakeholder guests who took advantage of the photo booth, a great time was had by all. The Retailer of the Year was hotly contested across all categories and with high standards recorded under the judging criteria, the results were extremely close. All finalists as well as the winners are to be commended on their achievements recognising the efforts they have made to build and improve their business. In 2017, we plan to have a new category for our Great Green Grocer partners to reinforce our commitment to ‘fresh, local and quality’ as their prime buying advantages. We look to build on the Market City Ball success to date and the 2017 event will be held in the newly constructed Crown Towers Ballroom. This year we will be celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Chamber and we expect over 500 people to attend this annual gala event.

Freshmark, 2016 – in brief Martin Clark, CEO Freshmark In 2016 Sydney Markets Limited (SML) commissioned a study entitled “The Future of the Markets” which is looking at what is required on the current Flemington site but also what will be required well into the future. When the markets moved here from Haymarket, we were on the outskirts of the city. The centre of Sydney is now two suburbs further west of the current site and we are surrounded by major residential developments. This all has to be considered when planning for the future. The first phase of the study will be released in early 2017. The annual Race Day was again held at Royal Randwick Racecourse and was a great day out for the markets community. The annual Summer Fruit Auction was held at the end of October and again over $50,000 was raised for Save our Sons and the Sydney Markets Foundation. The annual dinner was renamed the Summer Fruit Ball with over 300 people attending on the night.

The new venue of the Sheraton Ballroom overlooking Darling Harbour and the night’s entertainment was a big hit for those attending saying it was one of the best night’s that they’ve had for many years. New this year was the Summer Fruit Festival, a four day event at Darling Harbour. While the event was not the raging success that we hoped for, we certainly learnt a lot and will look at other ways to improve this function when we hold it next. In 2017 the Chamber will be appointing event organisers to manage our events and we hope to breathe new life into these functions. This has been my first full year as the Chamber’s CEO and we have made many internal changes to the management and direction of the Chamber. As with anything, changes will continue to be made in order for the Chamber to remain focussed on providing representation and services for our members. So once again there have been many changes for the NSW Chamber during 2016 and I’m sure there will be more to come. Let’s see what 2017 has in store!

A New Chamber President In November 2015, our long serving President, Bill Chalk, stood down as President and handed the reins to Nick Martelli. Bill had been President for the past 15 years. Nick has an extensive background in the industry, not just wholesale but retail as well. The Martelli family started in the fruit and vegetable industry in the 1950’s and opened their first retail store in 1963. Nick started working part time in the store when he was 14 and still at school. Nick eventually took over the running of the store until he sold it approximately ten years ago. The store still bears the Martelli name.

a director of the credit service and many other consultative committees over the years. Currently, along with being Chamber President, he also sits on the Future of the Markets Planning Committee and the Council of Market Representatives. There are a lot of changes happening in the industry and Sydney Markets and Nick is looking forward to the challenges that these changes will present.

Nick is the principal of Allcrops, a well regarded business in the Sydney Markets. Over the years he has been involved with many aspects of the markets, always looking to the betterment and future development of the markets. He provided retailer advice during the market privatisation in the late 90’s, he has also sat as

The 2016 Summer Fruit Auction continued its hefty task of raising money for Save Our Sons and the Sydney Markets Foundation with a donation result producing approximately $40,000 . A “Show and Shine” of beautiful classic vehicles owned by Markets workers , a Big Screen donated by the Sydney Markets Credit Co-op, and a line up of activities including a car giveaway by the Your Local Greengrocer, supported by a line up of hard working volunteers produced a great event.

as well as the truly spirited players from the Markets. It was a great night with Raymond Crowe – Unusualist and Peppermint Jam (the Band) providing excellent dancing music and a show that was both captivating and hilarious. The venue was outstanding overlooking Darling Harbour and the Saturday night fireworks display

Following on from the Wednesday Auction the Summer Fruit Festival at Darling Harbour expanded the fresh fruit and vegetables message to the public with approximately 18,000 people attending the event. The Your local Green Grocer marquee was outstanding giving away another car and a number of televisions and other articles with “Bang the Button” competitions. Sydney Markets had a “Paddy’s” stand which had a queue on most occassions to spin the prize wheel. A Jumping castle, pumpkin giveaways from Murphy’s Produce, and the Fresh for Kids charactors roaming around the site kept a smile on everyones faces. The Summer Fruit Festival Ball was just down the precinct at the Four Points Sheraton. Stand holders at the Festival that still had enough energy attended,
