We stand with America and Israel
Dear Members,
I am excited to be entering my first year at Fresh Meadow Country Club as the President. Exciting times for us as we enter our 103rd year, and I am honored to serve in this role.
I’m looking forward to an exciting season ahead, we have many great things in the works to ensure that FMCC continues to be our home away from home. The phenomenal golf course, our philanthropic endeavors, and magnificent events during 2024 make us all proud.
It’s hard to believe that Memorial Day has come and gone. Our General Manager Ed Leonard and our Assistant Manager Cesar Carrillo, and their team, are really showing us what FMCC is all about. We should all be thankful to have Ed and his team who work tireless hours to ensure that our timeat theClubisperfect. We do
ask that you acknowledge them and ensure to be courteous and respectful when interacting with the team, and all team members at the club.
We need to give recognition to our Golf Course Superintendent, Joe Gardner, and his team, for the phenomenal condition of the
members go a long way in letting them know how much we value their time and effort.
I want to welcome our new board members: Ivan Goodstein, David Hirsch, Jennifer Hoine, and Helen Solomon, and look forward to collaborating with them and the rest of the board.
We have retained Pembroke and Ives to develop a comprehensive plan for the lub, that not only embraces the present but preparesthe club forthe
future. This will include interior design and decorating services, and how we can repurpose areas of the clubhouse into a more efficient and effective use of the clubhouse to ensure we are meeting the needs of the membership. We anticipate being able to share their initialproposal with the membership, later this year.
We have many great things in the works to ensure that FMCC continues to be our home away from home. The phenomenal golf course, our philanthropic endeavors, and magnificent events during 2024.
Our calendar for the season is out and is jam-packed with events for all ages to enjoy throughout the year. We have our Friday night dinners, our Sunday BBQ, our nine wine and dinners, (which this year will also include the option for pickleball) and then stay for one of our great dinners afterthe event. We golf course and practice facility. We continue to work with Joe to evaluate improvements on the course and practice facilities.
Danny Balin and his staff have been busier than ever. The pro shop is full of great new clothing and merchandise. Please visit the shop and support your pro. Lessons are available as his team has added clinics to improve your game and course enjoyment.
Please make sure to let Ed, Joe, Danny, and their staff know how much we appreciate what they do for us. A thank you or an acknowledgment to our staff
have plenty of other events planned, so please check the calendar.
Please make sure that if you sign up for an event you do honor your reservation, and the evening runs smoothly based on the number of attendees that have made a reservation for the night. If you did not have a chance to attend the Friday night “WhiteParty” kickoff event, it was a great event and well attended.
As we all know, we have a fantastic Pro Shop that is fully stocked with the latest brands and items. If you
aren’t aware the Pro Shop is owned and operated by Danny Balin, and it is imperative for us to support the shop. Additionally, you receive a 20% discount on all merchandise asa member. Danny, Carol, and therest of the staffare there tohelpwith anyrequestyouhave, and if it is not in stock, they will be happy to order it for you. Please do your best to support the prop shop as opposed to buying your items online, as the success of the shop is based on our member support.
I would like to point out some particularly important reminders we all must act on to better care for OUR golf course in this busy time of season:
1. Filling divots: Replace your divots on fairways and tees at all times of the year if you can. If the divot goes to pieces do not try to replace it, discard the pieces into the rough and use the mix provided on your cart to fill the divot. The seed mix will germinate and fill in over time.
2. Fixing ball marks: Simply fix your ball mark and if you see another, fix it too. This is a simple courtesy that all golfers can appreciate. Fixing ball marks help keep greens rolling smooth and true. NEW to 2024 are ball repair tools that will be provided at the first tee. Please take one and use it during your round. Please ask any of the Professional Staff on how to safely use.
3. Rake your bunker: All our bunkers are supplied with a minimum of two rakes, please rake your pitch marks and footprints. After raking the bunker, place the rake outside the bunker where you found it originally.
4. Walking in and out of bunkers: Please do not walk up the face of a bunker! (the face of the bunker is the portion of the bunker that faces you as you are
hitting out of the hazard) Just simply exit the bunker at the rear, flat side to avoid damaging the face or potentially hurting yourself on a steep slope.
5. Cart traffic: Please obey rope and stakes as well as other signage on the golf course. When you approach a green or tee please park on the path. If you see a wear pattern, go in a different direction, and drive your cart in the fairway instead of the rough, doing so will preserve the rough in stressful times of the growing season. And please, always, keep carts a minimum of Forty (40) feet from the greens.
6. Broken tees on Tee Boxes: Please pick up and dispose of your broken tees on the tee boxes. This has become a much bigger problem over the years, not only do broken tees do major damage to our mowers, but it's unsightly to fellow members and guests. Please pick up your tees, broken or not.
These simple points of etiquette will make your golf experience and the groups behind you much more enjoyable. We ask that youabide by these simple “Best Practices” and share them with fellow members, children, and guests. As a reminder, the above is the responsibility of the players and not the caddies. Of course, they are there to enhance your golf experience, but the responsibility remains with the player.
I look forward to seeing you around the club and as always, feel free to reach out to me at smarvin@ olmsteadinc.com with any comments or suggestions.
Thank you and I look forward to another great season at Fresh Meadow Country Club.

We are about encompassing the social aspect that brings everyone together. From the foundation of The Babes charity, opening day golf events, the season-opening party, dinners, lunches, brunch, entertainment nights, cards rooms, the pool, the high quality of food prepared with heart and a standard that is challenged every day.

Our dedicated staff is here to ensure that every visit to Fresh Meadow Country Club is met with warmth, professionalism, and a touch of personalized service that sets us apart. The foundation of our training and culture is the Four Steps of Member Service we initiated earlier in the year. A program focused on delivering a service that is part of our daily behavior.

As we embark on a new future together, I encourage you to immerse yourself fully in all that Fresh Meadow Country Club has to offer. Join us for our family events, tournaments, daily food and drink offerings, and social gatherings, where bonds are strengthened, and new memories are made.

As part of this season’s cultural experience a group of FMCC Members went to the Nova Music Festival Exhibition. We witnessed a harrowing account of the October 7 attack through recordings made by victims and terrorists. This display gave visual proof of this horrific event. There is no doubt about the evil perpetrated that day.

The Babe Committee extends a huge thank you to everyone at FMCC! We're thrilled to announce the launch of the FMCC Cancer Research Project, focusing on breast cancer research, funded by Babe in 2023. Together, our collective efforts last year have led to a significant milestone.
We're excited to share this news so members and staff can see the impact of your donations firsthand. We also want to express our gratitude to the Board of Governors, Ed and Team, our Philanthropy Chairs, and all members and staff for their incredible generosity and support for BABE 2023.
RESEARCH PROJECT:
Treatment-related changes in the physical health of breast cancer survivors
PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER:
Clara Bodelon, PhD, MS
As a Senior Principal Scientist, Clara Bodelon leads research projects in survivorship epidemiology of female cancers, with a special focus on breast and ovarian cancers. She collaborates with other scientists in the American Cancer Society’s Population Science department to understand the role of genetic, molecular, and other factors that can help cancer survivors lead a long high quality of life.
It has been observed that, compared to chemotherapy, hormone therapy may be associated with lower incidence of certain age-related conditions in breast cancer patients, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and osteopenia, and cognitive decline. However, the effect of hormone therapy on physical health, defined as the ability to perform daily tasks such as walking, is unknown. This study will use medical and behavioral data to assess the effects of cancer treatment (endocrine therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy) on physical health in breast cancer survivors, to inform optimization of care following treatment.
RESEARCH STATUS:
Clara Bodelon and her team completed the work in progress (WIP) presentation for this project last fall. The purpose of the WIP is to present preliminary findings and get feedback on the analyses to refine for the final manuscript. With that completed, they are in the last phases of this project and will be working towards submitting for publication in the next few months.
