Hiiii! First, a big warm welcome to 2020 and to this planner! I’m Emily, your business bestie. And I’ll be your guide this year.

Goodbye, 2019

Before we really dig in to our hopes and dreams for 2020, let’s say goodbye to 2019. I don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on the past, but it’s good to pause and acknowledge all we’ve accomplished so far and learn from what didn’t work. So take a few moments to answer these questions:

Let’s start with the good stuff. What good things happened so far this year? What are you grateful for? What are you proud of?

What didn’t go well? Where did you stumble? What do you wish was different?

What can you learn from what worked?

What can you learn from what didn’t work?

What happened in the past does not define your futu e! No matter how last year went, make a commitment to yourself right now that this year is going to be awesome!

2020 at a glance

Before diving into the nitty gritty of our goals, let’s step back and look at this year at a glance. Use the calendar below to schedule time off, vacations, promotions or launches, marketing themes, etc. We’re just getting a loose idea here--not a daily (or even weekly) breakdown. And this will surely shift and evolve over the year. But it’s helpful to jot down the big stuff so you don’t overbook yourself or burn out. For example, we always have a ton of activities at the end of the school year, then we go on a big camping trip at the beginning of July, followed by my daughter’s birthday. So I know June is not when I want to plan a big launch! When mapping out my year, I like to think in terms of “seasons,” which are way easier to think about than an entire year. (These might be quarters, holiday seasons, or any chunk of time that makes sense to you.) Here are some examples of different plans to get your ideas flowing

Now it’s your turn! Use the calendar on the next page to plan out your big seasons for the year.

Writing one great GOAL So often we write goals based on what we think we “should” be doing, instead of what really lights us up! So first we need to sort out the SHOULDs from the GOALs:

A SHOULD is based in Shame (you’re not enough, so you need to do something to be enough), it feels Heavy, it’s focused on Other people’s expectations of you vs what you really want, it leads to Underwhelming results, and no matter what the outcome, you end up feeling Let Down in the end. A GOAL is based in Growth (you’re enough as you are and you’re expanding and stretching!) It’s born out of your Own desires, not what anyone else wants for you or from you. It’s Action-oriented, and just the act of working toward it Lights you up! A big clue to whether you’re setting a “should” instead of a goal is if it starts with “I should.” (Ha! Brilliant, right?) Things like “I should be more active on social media,” or “I should organize my life” usually come from a place of not meeting someone else’s expectations. But “I’m excited to be more visible, so I’m going to learn everything I can about Instagram,” or “I desire a calm, streamlined workspace so I’m going to organize my office” come from a place of growth and desire--these are true goals. The other key to a great goal is that it’s action-oriented! We often write goals with the outcome in mind. Like, “I want to earn $10,000” or “I want to book 4 high-end clients this month.” I used to do this!!! There’s nothing wrong with setting a target, but we’re shifting our focus from the outcome (which we can’t control) to the ACTION we’re going to take (which we can control!) For example, you may think, “I want to earn $5000 per month” (that’s an outcome) Then you need to ask yourself, “What big action am I going to take to do that?” (Maybe filling your Ets

ďƒŞGoal: Target - Desired Outcome: Progress Milestone #1: Task: Task: Task: Task: Progress Milestone #2: Task: Task: Task: Task: Progress Milestone #3: Task: Task: Task: Task: Timeline - When do I want to complete this? Time - What time will I set aside to work on this goal? Team - What support or help do I need? Tools - What programs, software, or tools do I need? Training - What do I need to learn? Treat! Reward for completing my goal:

Make time for your goals. We did not just do all this work to set goals for nothing! If your goals are important to you--and I believe they are--then you need to make time for them and put that time on your schedule. “I’ll work on my goals when all my client work is done” is not an answer! I’m not saying you have to work on your goals before anything else. That doesn’t fit for everyone. (Although it’s my favorite method for sure!) But you do need to set aside dedicated time to work on your big goals or they will always fall to the bottom of your list. It may work for you to set one day aside each week to spend a big chunk of time working on your main goal. Or it may work better for you to work on your goal for 30 minutes each day. Or you may decide, “I’m going to work on my goals for 3-5 hours each week” but when those hours happen vary from week to week. Just make sure you actually DO schedule the time in! Fun story--I launched this business by setting aside just 10 minutes a day in the morning. That’s all I had! You can make tremendous progress in a short time if you protect that time fie cely! Honor your nature and lifestyle when planning your work activities. If you like a lot of variety in your life, a rigid schedule isn’t going to work for you! And if you love structure and predictability, an open-ended work-whenever schedule is going to drive you bonkers. You may find that themed days (like writing on ednesdays and marketing on Mondays) work well. You might prefer to work on your goals first thing in the mo ning, answer emails from 10-11 every day, and spend the rest of your days on client work. Or you may find that each week needs to be di ferent, but you commit to schedule in time for your goals every week before you schedule anything else. Whatever style works for you, take time to set a weekly schedule that includes time to work on your goals.

JANUARY

Welcome to 2020, babe! Let's do this thing! We're kicking off the year thinking about time management, so we can make the most of every single day this year. Here's the thing about time, though... it doesn't want to be managed. It's it's own entity, marching forward consistently. So what can we do? We can manage our energy. We can learn about our natural rhythms and what works best for how we spend our minutes and hours. Pay attention to how you use your time this month (without judging yourself!) I encourage you to approach this with a sense of playful curiosity as you form a partnership with this thing we call time.

XOXO,

Emily
