t’s February already, and that means two things: Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, and so is the 20th Annual Wellness Show, Feb 17th to 19th at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The staff of Fresh Vancouver will be there to hand out magazines and talk to our readers – come visit us at booth 507. We can’t wait to meet you in person! Fresh is a media sponsor for the Living Well seminar stage at this year’s Wellness Show, and we’re excited to announce two presentations that you don’t want to miss! On February 17th at 3:30 pm, regular Fresh contributor and entrepreneurial advisor Heather White will present a seminar entitled “Customize Your Life and Live Happily Ever After.” Then, on February 18th at 12:30 pm, be sure to check out the “Humour for Health” workshop presented by Lorne Cardinal of Corner Gas fame and comedienne Monique Hurteau.

At Fresh, we are constantly working to define the concept of beauty for ourselves and, we hope, for our readers as well. We are endlessly discussing what beauty is – and what it is not. What we agree on most of the time is that real beauty is simply the external expression of how we feel inside. It is our best selves, presented to the world with bright eyes and a smile; perhaps a little glow to our skin. It is happiness, health and confidence. It is positive energy and passion for life. And, as many of our past covers can attest to, we at Fresh firmly believe in the beauty of intelligent, influential women who make a difference to our city and our world. Our cover story this issue, Patricia Graham, encapsulates that concept beautifully. As former Editor-in-Chief of the Vancouver Sun, now VP Digital for Pacific Newspaper Group, Patricia has had a powerful influence on print media in Vancouver. Her intelligence and quiet strength make hers the kind of beauty we should all aspire to – and at age 63, her energy, vitality and great skin are enviable, too! Congratulations to the lucky winners of our 12 Days of Christmas giveaways! We hope you are enjoying your wonderful gifts. Many thanks to our contest sponsors who supplied these fabulous prizes, listed below. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day and we’ll see you at the Wellness Show!

t’s our first issue of the new year, and we’re starting things off with a bang! Along with a solid arsenal of skincare, weight management, and mind and body wellness options to start you off right in 2012, we’re mixing it up a little. One of our feature stories this issue is on celebrity mistress Sarah Symonds, founder of Mistresses Anonymous and author of Having An Affair? A Handbook for the “Other Woman.” A serial mistress to prominent married men for many years, Symonds is now on the wagon from cheating men and reaching out to help other miserable mistresses reform their self-annihilating ways. With a singular compassion for women shamed and shunned, Symonds offers counseling through support groups, seminars and, soon, a new television series. Yet her contentious opinions make many a married woman uncomfortable – not to mention many men. Helpful or hateful? You decide. Not to be too cheeky... but we’re also broaching the subject of “manscaping.” Yes, gents, it’s time for you to join us women in the often uncomfortable and sometimes bizarre world of personal grooming. Your significant other may demand (or appreciate!) a little tidy up – but beware! Stylist Anthony Crosfield has advice on how to keep it locker room appropriate. Jumping out of the locker room and into the news room, we turn our attention to our cover story this issue: the esteemed former Editor-in-Chief of the Vancouver Sun, Patricia Graham, who has recently taken on a new role as Vice President, Digital with Pacific Newspaper Group. Graham is known as an innovator and a change agent in the world of print media; a forward thinker who has not only welcomed but embraced the game-changing dynamic of digital news delivery. In her interview with Fresh, she reflects upon her life and career, and the need to age gracefully and well. Here’s to a fabulous 2012!

Sarah Symonds, Celebrity Mistress

arah Symonds says what women hate to hear and perhaps fear most: that love, respect and family life are no substitute for salacious sex with hot, young women; or more pointedly that, given their druthers, most married men would prefer to have both. And she is living proof. As one of the “celebrity mistresses” featured on a recent Biography Channel segment, Symonds knows what she is talking about. She has been mistress to such celebrities as Nicholas Cage, Lord Jeffrey Archer and, most recently, “family man of the year” UK celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey.

10

| fresh Vancouver Issue 11

y t i l e d i f In During her seven-year affair with Ramsey, Symonds wrote and self-published a book, which took her onto the Oprah Winfrey Show, attracting international acclaim and attention. After the exposure of her affair with Ramsey, Symonds made it her mission to reform herself, and founded a 12-step support group for mistresses around the world who wanted to do the same. Since then, she has appeared on Dr. Phil, Dr. Drew, The View and Larry King Live. This reformed “celebrity mistress” has made something of her heartache, and is trying to help other mistresses around the globe do the same. Her book Having An Affair? A Handbook for the “Other Woman” is controversial and outspoken, but in the end, it is kind-hearted. Yes, it is full of contentious opinions that will feel like a slap in the face to many readers: a suburban housewife who gains weight has only herself to blame when her husband strays; a mistress fulfills the sexy side of a relationship and ultimately makes a marriage better; men are fundamentally lying, cheating, inconsiderate boors who will do anything for sex. However, there is also some gentle care for miserable mistresses who have spent too many years putting themselves second best, waiting in vain for a day that never comes, and chastising themselves for all their many mistakes. Oh, and then there are those juicy little tips for how to get the most out of your affair, if marriage isn’t your end goal. On the wagon from married men for the past three years, Sarah was recently in Vancouver and Toronto putting on workshops related to her 12-step “Mistresses Anonymous” program, and will return to Vancouver in the spring to begin filming her new television show, The Mistress, which premieres September 2012 on the Slice Network. “It will rip away the veil of secrecy that hides mistresses living in despair,” remarks Sarah during a recent phone conversation. “It’s about getting these women to wake up, getting them out of these toxic situations, and hopefully getting them on the road to romance where they can meet a decent single guy.” Sarah’s message is a cry for support from “the sisterhood,” as she calls it, which includes not only mistresses, but also spurned wives who need to stop blaming the other woman and starting looking to the man, themselves, and their relationships. “I can honestly tell you

that the majority of women I hear from never set out to be mistresses,” comments Sarah. “For me it became a pattern, and I felt I didn’t deserve any better. I didn’t think I deserved a normal boyfriend like other people had; I was used to the crumbs of somebody’s time. And you fall into those patterns again and again – the pattern of unavailability.”

The World According to Sarah

It’s a shocking, eye-opening account; one that many women (and men!) might not appreciate. But Sarah calls it as she sees it, and this refreshing, no-holds-barred approach gives mistresses everywhere the ability to grieve their hurts and losses beyond the shadows of their shame. In our discussion with Sarah, she shed her particular kind of light on the subjects of infidelity and heartbreak. Why married men cheat: “Men have a penis in their trousers and that’s all they think about, I’m sorry to say. Women need to get with the program and stop trying to change them or fix them or make them something they’re not. Usually, a married man will step outside the marital home and bed when there’s something wrong at home. My message to wives is, don’t allow a space to be created in your marriage. I speak with women every day who know their husbands are having affairs and they’re happy to turn a blind eye. In my opinion, wives who turn a blind eye are just as bad as the man who is breaking his marital vows. Men are looking for something they’re not getting at home. It’s usually about emotional and sexual intimacy.” Message to wives: “It’s in every man’s DNA to cheat, but that doesn’t mean they will. If you don’t want them to cheat, wives, get with the program and act more like your husband’s mistress. Men are simple creatures: they want to eat, they want to sleep, and they want to fornicate. Give it to them in that order! You can’t become complacent, pile on the pounds and stay home watching television all day. If you think something’s a little off, investigate it. If you’re not sleeping with your husband, I can assure you somebody else is. If you’re not making him feel special, somebody else is.” The “Mistresses Anonymous” program: “After I was on Oprah, I was overwhelmed with the amount of women writing to me for advice. I knew I needed to set up a group so I could reach women all over the world. So I started

11

| fresh Vancouver Issue 11

the Mistresses Anonymous Society as a sort of chat room, and it became what we have now at mistressesanonymous.com. I’m thrilled that after six years of working with women, I’ve been granted my own show, and I’m excited to spend next year filming in Vancouver, and to be able to help more women than ever before because I’ve got a bigger platform now.” Women helping women: “Whoever reads this article has either been there, is there now, or knows somebody who is there. Let’s as a society stop judging the sisterhood and try to help each other. Don’t let wives be humiliated and cheated on. Don’t let friends settle for married men. I’ve got tips for women on how to spot if a man is married; other tips for how to tell if you’re being cheated on. We have to start helping each other, and stop blaming the other woman. Yes, she’s part of the equation. But it’s the men who are cheating, and they’ve got so many textbook lies and lines to reel you in: If only I’d met you years ago... you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve met in years... I’m not sleeping with my wife... we’re getting divorced.... we live in separate houses... it’s all utter rubbish!” “I wasted years as a mistress,” says Sarah, “but I’ve finally emerged as a much stronger person.” Whether that person is strong enough to handle the trials of marriage remains to be seen. In the meantime, regardless of what you think of her take on the nature of infidelity, Sarah Symonds is offering a voice and a support system to broken women everywhere who have long considered themselves second best, and is encouraging the sisterhood to stop men from cheating – since they obviously can’t be counted on to stop it themselves.

UK-based author, broadcaster, journalist, and the world’s first and only “Infidelity and Relationship Analyst,” Sarah Symonds is in demand around the world for her insightful work in dealing with infidelity. Sarah is candid about having lived as the “Other Woman” for many years, and has made it her life’s mission to help other women living as mistresses to reform. After Sarah appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007, the response from women was so overwhelming that she founded “Mistresses Anonymous”; a groundbreaking support group and recovery program for women living a secret life. www.mistressesanonymous.com or sarah@mistressesanonymous.com

Metabolic Syndrome:

The Most Common Disorder You’ve Never Heard Of

By Topher Allen

W

hen I first entered clinical practice, many clients would ask for advice on how to lose weight. This usually happened when their favourite jeans suddenly seemed to shrink a few sizes. Without question, most of us are motivated by the aesthetic appeal of weight loss; however, the medical consequences of being overweight can be deadly, especially if you are diagnosed with diabetes or metabolic syndrome. It was during a flight from Miami to Phoenix this past May that I witnessed the devastation of diabetes first-hand. My friend from Phoenix, who is a US citizen, joined me on a week-long cruise. Mid-flight, he suffered the consequences of advanced diabetic ketoacidosis, slipping into a semi-comatose state. Simply stated, his metabolism was shutting down as a result of extremely high blood sugar. While in nursing school, I’d studied diabetic symptoms and side effects, but this was the first time I’d

witnessed the devastating effects in such an up-close and personal way. The most interesting part of this story is that neither my friend nor I knew he was diabetic. A total collapse of the body’s ability to metabolize or use sugar is the first symptom that many newly diagnosed diabetics experience, which, for some people, results in sudden death. After a three-week hospital stay, none of which he remembers, my travel companion is back on his feet. As a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic (insulin dependent), he must now endure constant blood sugar testing with four daily injections of insulin to stay alive.

Do You Have Metabolic Syndrome?

My area of study and career focus has fundamentally shifted as a result of this experience. A few hours of research revealed a startling

12

| fresh Vancouver Issue 11

truth: many of us are suffering from potentially devastating illnesses that may become evident only in a sudden and life-threatening manner. One of the most striking examples of this is the shocking prevalence of metabolic syndrome. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 39 percent of North American adults fit the diagnosis for metabolic syndrome, and most of us have no idea what it is or how great our risk for devastating consequences is. Although medical definitions vary slightly, the IDF guidelines for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome require a person to have abdominal obesity defined by waist circumference larger than 36 inches for men and 32 inches for women and two or more of the following four symptoms: elevated triglycerides, reduced concentrations of HDL cholesterol, elevated blood pressure and dysglycemia, which is generally defined as the inability of your body to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. The combina-

tion of these symptoms dramatically increases the likelihood of a person suffering a heart attack, stroke, dying from a heart attack or stroke, and/or being diagnosed with diabetes.

The Costs of Poor Health

The financial and personal costs of metabolic syndrome are difficult, if not impossible, to calculate; however, we do have an idea of what diabetes costs individuals and businesses in North America. Although well insured as a US citizen, my friend did not benefit from the publicly funded healthcare system we enjoy in Canada. In spite of “good” coverage, his out-of-pocket and ongoing costs are in the tens of thousands of dollars. From 1999 to 2009, the total number of US citizens diagnosed with diabetes rose from 11.1 million to 19.7 million. According to the National Diabetes Surveillance System (NDSS), an

agency of Health Canada, rates of diabetes have doubled over the past decade to 2.7 million Canadians or 7.6 percent of the population being diagnosed in 2010. The cost to the Canadian healthcare system and economy was predicted at $11.7 billion in 2010, expected to rise to $16 billion by 2020. However, striking as these numbers and projections are, the personal cost to families and loved ones is incalculable.

How Fat Are We?

A recent Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) reported that 62 percent of Canadians are either overweight or obese. Combine this with the staggering rise in diabetes, and many of us are well on the way to a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome – and don’t even know it. The CHMS report uncovered another disturbing fact: we dramatically underestimate how fat we really are. When asked to

13

| fresh Vancouver Issue 11

assess their body size, test subjects routinely low-balled how overweight they were by 20 percent. To prevent metabolic syndrome, measure your waist at the highest point of the hip-bones; if it’s greater than 36 inches for men and 32 inches for women, do everything you can to get that number down. In future articles, I will discuss specific ways you can reduce body fat, decrease abdominal obesity, and decrease your risk factors for diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

alk to almost anyone and you’ll discover that their dream in life is similar to your own: love in their heart, peace in their mind, and happiness and joy in their experiences. So why, then, are we more stressed, more overweight, more medicated and unhappy than any other time in history? I believe it’s because we are “looking” for happiness, fulfillment, peace, love and joy. We’ve been conditioned to believe that these desired feelings are “out there,” somewhere we have to get to. The truth is that we already are happy, fulfilled, at peace and full of love and joy – these feelings are within us. We’ve simply misinterpreted the journey and have left our hearts and bodies, searching instead outside of ourselves. The path to experiencing our desired emotions is indeed a journey, but it’s an inner adventure. We’re not looking to find something; we’re releasing that which no longer “fits” so we can again reunite with these beautiful emotions and states of being that have never left us. Happiness is not something we will acquire, but instead is something we will remember and reconnect with.

Three Questions to Help with Your Quest

There are three important questions we need to ask ourselves on our journey to happiness and fulfillment: How do I want to feel? The first question we need to ask ourselves is: how do I want to feel? This question at first blush may seem obvious, but as you dig into the depths of it and

truly honour your desired emotions, you may be surprised at what you discover. For some, it may be easier to begin by listing how you don’t want to feel. From that list of undesired emotions, you can identify the opposite and, therefore, create your list that way. For example, let’s say that you have been feeling scattered lately and that feeling is undesirable for you – it’s not making you happy. You could ask yourself, what’s the opposite of scattered? (Whatever your answer, remember: it’s right for you.) Let’s imagine that the opposite of feeling scattered would be feeling orderly and organized. Great! Now we have clarity on your desired feeling. What will make you feel that way? The next question is: what activities or actions will create your desired feelings? In the case of our example, what would you need to do and how would you need to behave in order to achieve your desired feeling of being more organized? Before going too far, I want to mention that this is not to become an exercise in self-judgment. You are not to start beating yourself up about why you can’t be more organized, or whatever the case may be. Instead, what I want you to do is take a deep breath, close your eyes and quiet your mind. In that state, ask yourself: what can I do to create a feeling of order in my life? Let the answer bubble up from your heart and present itself on the screen of your mind. Don’t judge it and don’t second-guess it. Listen for it, hear it and honour it. You may be surprised. You may hear answers like: call Maria and ask for the name of her housekeeper, or go to bed earlier, or drink water.

As I said, trust that the answer you receive is the answer you need. What do you need to change? The third question to ask yourself as you journey inward to reconnect with your natural state (your fulfilled and happy state) is: what needs to go? Our undesired emotional state (not feeling good) is working with us to send a strong message: things need to change. More often than not, the changes required of us to reconnect with our happiness have little to do with acquisition and more to do with letting go. Our soul is calling to us, through our feelings, to release that which we no longer need. In the same way as suggested above, find the centre within yourself and ask: what needs to go? What am I ready to let go of? Happiness, fulfillment, love and joy are emotions that are alive within you. You do not need to acquire them, but instead you are being asked to redesign certain aspects of your life, change your behaviour and let go of that which is no longer serving you. That way you can once again remember and reconnect with the feelings that you so desire and the happy life that you so deserve.

Beyond Botox –

Advanced Injectable Treatments By Dr. Sachit Shah

Advanced techniques with Botox by an experienced injector can allow you to retain movement of the face and ma ke you look refreshed and relaxed without appearing frozen. Other advanced Botox techniques include eyebrow shaping and shaping of the lower face and neck.

F

acial aging affects us all over time. The visible signs of aging are well known and will appear over a period of time according to our own genetic make up as well as environmental factors. Some of us age faster than others, and we often feel a lot younger than our face or hands would have us believe. Botox and volumizers or dermal fillers help to defer the signs of aging and can leave you looking a lot more refreshed. Two of the main signs of aging are deflation and descent; that is, the loss of facial volume and sagging skin. It follows, then, that the two treatments required are to revolumize and reposition; that is, to increase facial volume and correct sagging skin. Although there are surgical methods to treat wrinkles and folds, the past 10 years have brought about a number of methods that are non-surgical and that can give you great results without resorting to surgery.

Non -surgical Treatments

Since the discovery of Botox for cosmetic treatments, many millions of Botox treatments have been performed worldwide on men and women.

18

However, Botox can treat only wrinkles and not sagging skin or the loss of volume in your face or hands. In the early 1980s, collagen treatments were used to treat scars and fine lines, and were fillers that lasted only three months or so. Since that time, many more dermal fillers have been used for volume treatments with treatments lasting anywhere from six months to three years or longer in some instances. Most common of the injectable fillers are the hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in your skin and, when injected into the skin, it volumizes, softens and hydrates the skin. Common hyaluronic acid fillers are Restylane, Perlane and the Juvederm family. These hyaluronic acid fillers, for the most part, last six to nine months when injected on their own. When combined with Botox treatments to produce a “Softlift treatment or a non-surgical face lift, the effects of the hyaluronic acid filler can last as long as 12 months. Hyaluronic acid fillers differ in their thickness; thicker formulations such as Juvederm Voluma last longer and may be used more for deeper folds as opposed to lip filling. Injectors can use hyaluronic acid fillers with relative ease and few problems. Any prob-

lems with hyaluronic acid fillers can also be corrected with the use of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid.

New Advancements in Injectable Treatments

Experienced cosmetic physicians today use advanced injectable treatments to give better and longer-lasting results. The main injectables used today are Radiesse, Sculptra, Selphyl and Artesense. These advanced fillers all are considered to be collagen builders rather than hyaluronic acid fillers. They work by actively rebuilding the collagen in your skin, and results can last for up to two to five years in some cases. These fillers or volumizers tend to be used primarily by experienced injectors, as they require more skill in administering the injection compared to hyaluronic acid fillers. Let’s look at each option in greater detail. • Radiesse is a collagen builder that uses calcium hydroxyapatite within a gel to inject nasolabial folds as well as for hand rejuvenation. This novel filler stimulates the production of collagen over time, and the results last more than 12 months and up to two years. Radiesse is used to treat the temples, sagging cheeks and nasolabial folds. The carrier gel in this filler lasts no more than six months, at which time you may see a slight, temporary decrease in volume before the collagen rebuilds and volume increases again. • Sculptra is also known as poly-L-lactic acid. Sculptra stimulates fibroblasts in the skin to produce collagen, which in turn increases facial volume, thereby reversing the signs of aging. The results from Sculptra are not immediate and may take up to four weeks before a change is noticeable. Sculptra will require two to three treatment sessions approximately four to six weeks apart. However, the results from Sculptra can last from two to four years. Sculptra has had some negative press in the past, but a few years ago the formulation was changed and any earlier problems are not encountered with their new formulation.

Selphyl has earned the name “vampire lift” as it uses your own blood to create an amazing filler. This technology uses platelets found in the blood to create platelet rich plasma (or PRP), which is then injected into the nasolabial folds, under eye circles and other folds on the face. When injected, Selphyl activates new skin cell growth and, over time, leads to a stronger collagen support structure. Selphyl can be used for acne scars as well as lines around the mouth and shallow wrinkles. The biggest advantage Selphyl offers is that it is created from the patient’s own body, which means allergic reactions almost never occur. The results are gradual as new collagen is built and can last two to four years. • Artesense is another collagen stimulator that has been regarded as a permanent filler. The components of Artesense have been used since 1936, but have been used in cosmetic medicine since 1989. More than 150,000 men and women have been treated with Artesense worldwide. Artesense is used mainly for acne scars and other scars or divots in the skin, and even augmenting the nipple! Artesense is a long-term collagen stimulator that lasts for five to 10 years. Gone are the days when your only option for facial volume and reducing sagging was to use hyaluronic acid fillers with or without Botox. The advanced injectable treatments include a range of collagen stimulators that are long lasting and effective. These advanced techniques are generally offered by more experienced physicians as they require more skilled injection techniques in order to provide great results. •

Firma Healthw ear Where health meets fashion

I

ntroducing FIRMA Healthwear, the new brainchild of Yvonne Hogenes . Yvonne is well known as the woman behind the Tab Bra phenomenon – customized bras that support posture, lymphatic drainage and good health, with a selection of mastectomy bras. She is also the owner of Malary’s Fashion Network, located in Cloverdale’s historic shopping district. FIRMA Healthwear is a unique new line of health-inspired shapewear that uses nanotechnology built directly into the fabric to give the wearer multiple therapeutic benefits. Not only are these slimming, sculpting garments great for smoothing trouble spots and making your body look great in any clothing; they also help diminish the appearance of those trouble spots just by wearing them! Say goodbye to cellulite as your FIRMA Healthwear works to to increase cellular metabolism, flush toxins and fat, increase micro-circulation and reduce joint pain. “Measure your arm or leg before you begin wearing your FIRMA Healthwear,” says Yvonne, “then wear for 30 days. People are losing from five to 15 centimetres – without changing anything else!”

Here’s how it works: active biocrystals from amethyst rock are ground to a very fine powder and woven into the fibres of the garments. These minerals absorb far infrared rays (FIR) from light and body heat and emit this energy back into the body’s tissues as thermal energy. The result is enhanced micro-circulation that increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the body’s soft tissue areas, which helps to detoxify the blood and results in numerous health benefits, including improved skin health, pain relief, muscle fatigue recovery and cellulite reduction. Other benefits include weight loss, softening of scar tissue, arthritic pain relief, healing of injuries and enhanced relaxation. FIRMA Healthwear fibres have been tested and certified by the Hohenstein Textile Testing Institute. FIRMA Healthwear will be available for the first time at the 20th Annual Wellness Show February 17th to 19th – visit Yvonne at Booth 700 to view, try on, or purchase your shapewear, leggings, socks or shirts! Sizes range from small to XXXL and all items are less than $100.

Ozone

Therapy By Dr. Jenny Schmidt-White

O

zone therapy uses a form of oxygen and has been safely administered for over 50 years in Europe and North America for the treatment and prevention of disease. Ozone is mainly used for its powerful effect on the immune system and circulation.

What Is Ozone?

O2 represents the oxygen we breathe (2 oxygen atoms combined), whereas ozone is made of 3 oxygen atoms (O3), creating a highly reactive oxidizing molecule. Depending on the concentration of ozone, it degrades viruses, bacteria, pesticides and a number of harmful chemicals in our bodies, or it stimulates the immune system and circulation. Medical ozone is a mixture of 0.05 to 5.0 percent ozone and, correspondingly, 99.9 to 95 percent oxygen. Higher concentrations of ozone in the mixture have a germ killing effect on viruses and bacteria with a fatty coating (Epstein Barr, herpes, hepatitis viruses and cytomegalovirus). Lower concentrations of ozone influence oxygenation of cells, induces enzymes and stimulates immune cells.

Administering Ozone

Medical ozone therapy is most commonly administered as autohemotherapy. Autohemotherapy involves removing approximately 250mL of blood from the patient, combining the blood with a mixture of ozone and oxygen,

and promptly re-injecting the blood back into the patient. Other common methods of ozone administration include: Steam sauna: This method combines the benefit of hyperthermia (mimics fever, causing heat-sensitive viruses and bacteria to die) with ozone absorbed by the skin and lymphatic system. The patient’s head is outside of the sauna and the ozone is added to the sauna environment. Auricular, vaginal, or rectal insufflations: These methods involve medical ozone used to irrigate the ear, vaginal or rectal canal for the treatment of candida, colitis, fistulas, and chronic infections. Topical: Topical ozone application is used for slow-healing wounds or ulcers.

Therapeutic Benefits of Ozone

Ozone has a number of therapeutic benefits, mainly: • killing bacteria by disrupting (oxidizing) the microbial cell membrane, • improving circulation by decreasing clumping together of red blood cells and improving the blood’s overall oxygen-carrying capacity and oxygenation of tissues, • inhibiting and slowing tumour and cancer cell growth, • modulating the immune system and fighting auto-immune diseases, chronic

22

infections and cancer, and • degrading environmental chemicals that disrupt hormone function. Ozone therapy can benefit a huge range of diseases and conditions, including but not limited to the following: • circulatory and cardiovascular conditions • chronic fatigue • fibromyalgia • hepatitis • chronic infections • autoimmune conditions • cancer Ozone therapy is a safe, effective and nontoxic treatment with a wide variety of uses. It is powerful in its immune stimulating and disease preventing effects and, if administered correctly, has virtually no known side effects. For safety reasons, it is important that the naturopathic doctor administering ozone therapy is certified in oxidative therapies and has specific training in this area. Dr. Jenny Schmidt-White is a Naturopathic Doctor in downtown Vancouver at an integrative health centre, helping patients to achieve optimal health through correcting hormone imbalances, optimizing digestion and nutrition, detoxification, and enhancing immune function. Ovarian Cancer Canada:

A Focus on Support W

omen are living longer with ovarian cancer, and want more and varied types of supportive care, according to a recent national survey conducted for Ovarian Cancer Canada by consultant Kathy Scalzo. This finding has resulted in the charity choosing survivorship/support as a key strategic initiative moving forward. “We are well underway in our efforts to increase Ovarian Cancer Canada’s supportive care offerings both regionally and nationally through partnerships and innovative programming,” says CEO Elisabeth Ross. “Our new programming will enhance the existing supportive care services we already offer to women living with ovarian cancer and their families across the country. Support from Ovarian Cancer Canada is just a phone call or an email away. We can help answer questions, provide a listening ear, and link you with our other support services and valuable resources in your community.” Ovarian Cancer Canada provides supportive care services in English and French. Services include one-on-one telephone information and support; printed and online materials; face-to-face group education sessions; and teleconference and online events that remove the health, geographic and economic barriers related to travel. While the charity’s focus is ovarian cancer, women affected by all gynecologic cancers are welcome to participate in support programs.

What to Watch for in 2012

In January, Ovarian Cancer Canada in partnership with CancerChatCanada began recruiting women with ovarian cancer from across the country who are interested in connecting with others through counsellor-facilitated online chat groups and discussion boards. For more

information about online chats, and/or to register your interest in an ovarian cancer group in English, visit cancerchatcanada.ca. Women interested in online chats or an ovarian cancer group in French should contact Monique Beaupré-Lazure at mbeauprelazure@ovariancanada. org or call 1-888-369-2972 (extension 1). Starting this spring, Kathy Scalzo will also be hosting Picking Up the Pieces workshops in various regions. Based on the book she co-authored with Sherri Magee, Picking Up the Pieces: Moving Forward After Surviving Cancer, the workshop is designed to help survivors move through the recovery phase once treatment for cancer has ended. The book and workshop speak to the growing recognition that there is a void survivors find themselves in when treatment ends and the journey to a “new normal” begins. As the year progresses, each of Ovarian Cancer Canada’s regional offices (Pacific, Western, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic) will enhance supportive care offerings through strategic partnerships with community support services in their regions. “Working with the women to help find a solution and partnering with existing community resources is an important part of our philosophy at Ovarian Cancer Canada,” says Marilyn. “These support groups address clearly expressed needs of women living with ovarian cancer. Women are attending and finding value in them, so it’s very gratifying.” Also in 2012, watch the Ovarian Cancer Canada website at ovariancanada.org for events in regions across the country on a variety of survivorship issues. For example, education sessions are being planned on complementary and alternative medicine in collaboration with the Complementary Medicine Education and Outcomes (CAMEO) Program of the BC Can-

Giving back

Survivors of ovarian cancer, their families, friends and colleagues often express the need to help educate others about ovarian cancer, Canada’s most fatal gynecologic cancer. Many have become Ovarian Cancer Canada volunteers and have taken training to deliver awareness and education programs including Ovarian Cancer: Knowledge is Power for the public and health professionals, and Survivors Teaching Students for students and health professionals. “These vital programs offer them the opportunity to give back to the community and get the word out about the disease,” says Elisabeth Ross. “When survivors and those close to them tell their stories and deliver important information about ovarian cancer, they do it with tremendous heart and a real sense of purpose. Feedback and evaluations show that these programs are impactful and memorable, and make a profound difference in increasing awareness of ovarian cancer among Canadians.”

Ovarian Cancer Canada is dedicated to overcoming ovarian cancer by: providing support to women and families living with the disease; increasing awareness among the public and health professionals; and supporting research into early detection, better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. For information on supportive care services and materials, regional support groups, education events, volunteer and fundraising opportunities and more, visit ovariancanada.org or call the our BC/Yukon office at 1-800-749-9310. For information on ovarian cancer, please visit our online Knowledge Centre at ovarianknowledge.ca and pass it along to others.

A Day in the Sun with

Patricia Graham By Liberty Craig

24

| fresh vancouver Issue 11

S

he is small in stature, elegant and extremely well spoken, but make no mistake: Patricia Graham is a force to be reckoned with. As Editor-inChief of the Vancouver Sun for perhaps the most precarious eight years in newspaper business history, Graham forged ahead with leadership and vision to make the Vancouver Sun’s digital properties some of the most successful in the industry. The role called for adaptability, vision and near constant change as digital communication collided with the tome of print to usher in a new era of news delivery. Recently, her success in that role led to her next endeavour: as Vice President, Digital with Pacific Newspaper Group, from which vantage point she can continue to effect change on our local media and the industry at large. Named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2006 and again in 2010 by the Women’s Executive Network and recipient of the 2006 Hadassah-Wizo Woman of Achievement Award, Graham serves on the advisory committee for the graduate School of Journalism at the University of British Columbia and the Patron’s Circle of the Minerva Foundation for B.C. Women, and is a founding member of Journeys with Heart. Despite her many achievements, Patricia remains an approachable, reflective woman who considers the effect of each word she utters before it trips smartly from her tongue. Patricia joined the staff of Fresh Vancouver for a riotously fun photo shoot and an engaging conversation roving through topics from the challenges of her job to aging gracefully in the workplace.

Graham’s New Role as VP Digital, Pacific Newspaper Group

“In our industry, the advertising dollars are shifting from print to digital, but the pool of advertising dollars at this time is not sufficient to support the cost structures of traditional newsrooms, so all traditional newsrooms in North America are trying to maximize the opportunities that are available in the digital area in order to keep doing what we do best. It’s maximizing opportunities for the content that already exists, across all digital properties, as well as creating new products and new ways of doing things. Essentially it comes down to trying to make some money in order to support our endeavours. “I’m still in the early stages of developing the local digital department, building my team and figuring out structurally how we fit in with other departments, especially advertising. I’m also seeking new opportunities; for example, we have just launched our new Chinese-language website Tai Yang Bao, which means “sun newspaper” in Mandarin. It’s early days, but it’s going well. In terms of digital development, you have to take the long view. It takes time to develop a good website with sophisticated functionality. It’s important to have short-term, long-term, and medium-term initiatives.”

The Changing World of News Delivery

“I think the traditional newspaper’s role was to inform and enlighten, entertain, encourage

debate and contribute to the community. All of those things still exist, but they’re now taking place across multiple platforms. The kind of content that is delivered hasn’t changed; it’s the way it’s delivered that’s changed. The immediacy is of course quite different. The saying used to be: “Yesterday’s news is no news.” Now, a day is a very long time in the cycle of news. We also have an audience that’s in transition. We have older readers who still have the print habit; we have younger readers who might pick up the newspaper if they see one, but wouldn’t think to buy one and would prefer to read everything on a digital platform.”

From Print to Online

“The Vancouver Sun and The Province have their own websites, and we also have a digital subscription for each newspaper, which is basically PDF pages of the newspapers. It’s delivered online but it still looks like a newspaper. Often it’s for people who are travelling and can’t get their print newspaper; they get the digital version with their subscription. Digital subscriptions are modest compared to print subscriptions. Our website at the moment is free, but I would anticipate that’s going to change, as with all newspapers. I would say the majority of the industry considers it a necessary change. Apart from the fact that it has to do with revenue to cover costs, it sends a message that there’s value to this content. “But I also like to think beyond the traditional newsroom because the tools we have now are much better – we have video, we have audio, we can do slideshows. We can be much more creative and we can think bigger.”

“I use an e-reader for travelling, but at home I’m more inclined to have a book, because I like books – I’m of that demographic!”

The Current Thirst for Celebrity Content

“Research shows that the appetite for celebrity content has surprising breadth. People who consume very serious content might also consume some celebrity content: we don’t have the information available to us about who used to consume how much serious content to really understand that in any definitive sense. What we do know is that there are a lot more of certain kinds of content available to people than there used to be. It has an audience, but it’s also off-putting to other people. Yet there’s no indication that people don’t still want deeper, more serious content.”

Giving Back: “Adopt a School” and “Raise a Reader”

“We have a charity called the Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund and the endowment is with the Vancouver Foundation. It produces a significant amount of money every year, which is given in grants to organizations that help children in need. Our education reporter wrote an article about a school where the teacher said the need was for basics: socks, shoes, food. Those needs have been there for quite a while but, for whatever reason, that story struck a chord. We decided to use the children’s fund to help this school through an “Adopt a School” program – and it just took off. The campaign ran for six weeks through November and December 2011, and total donations were matched dollar for dollar by the board for a grand total of $537,078.24. “The Vancouver Sun’s Raise a Reader Day is a great fundraising initiative, and it’s done such good. We always have somebody come to talk to us who has benefited from the program, and those stories are so inspirational – they always make me want to cry. The success of Raise a Reader is wonderful.”

On Energy and Vitality

“I turned 63 in January. I hate reading it but I appreciate that I shouldn’t. It’s just a number! My generation of women doesn’t look the same as most women our age did in my mother’s generation. Our generation, I think, has had it very easy. A lot of it must be psychological; some of it must be genetic. I like change – I embrace change, and I believe that change keeps you young. By and large, I don’t feel old. There are things that aren’t the same as when I was 40, but I still feel really engaged and interested and I have a lot of energy. I’m a bit of a workaholic

26

| fresh vancouver Issue 11

and I enjoy my work a lot. I need more sleep than I used to, which is very annoying! Sleep always seemed such a waste of time!”

On Aging Well in the Workforce

“I look after myself, and I think women in the workforce, especially as we get older, have to present well. Of course, you’re going to look older than some of the people you work with, but you’re not going to continue on if you seem old, feel old, look old. It’s just part of how you present yourself.

“We have to figure out how to age gracefully – it takes thinking and it takes developing a mindset.” “I exercise – I go to the gym, mostly. I have a trainer once a week, which really helps with the discipline. I had both my hips replaced, and I didn’t get back to exercising after the second surgery as quickly as I should have. Literally, from the first day back, I felt better. I eat really well, and I take calcium and vitamin D. I don’t drink much. I have facials regularly, which also helps. For skincare, I have a prescription that brightens my skin without using retinol, which I can’t use because it’s too hard on my skin. I don’t think you should be worried as you get older if you want a little Botox, or a little filler around your eyes or cheeks – there’s nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. Going further with it is fine, too. I think it’s more common than we think.”

On Aging Gracefully

“If we’re lucky, we will all get old; getting old is a privilege. We’re able to stay healthy and look as good as we can for as long as we can, but I think we also have to figure out how to age gracefully – it takes thinking and it takes developing a mindset. I am always astonished by how people in their 70s, 80s and 90s are so gracious. They know that anything can happen, but they’re not obsessing about it; they’re finding the positive with whatever stage of life they’re in.”

I think women in the workforce, especially as we get older, have to present well.

W rinkle Prevention:

Is it too late? By Amanda Beisel

W

rinkles are an inevitable part of life, so do we really have any control over them? Fortunately, the answer is: yes! When the right steps are taken, you can dramatically slow and potentially reverse the signs and symptoms of aging. Internal and external strategies are essential to successfully combating the aging process. Topical interventions such as those listed in this article and a whole-food, plant-based diet plus nutritional supplements are necessary. If you are looking to achieve visible, long-term results, you need to invest in treatments that work at the deeper level of your skin called the dermis, where all aging occurs. The popular quick-fix treatments may provide immediate results but, 90 percent of the time, they are shortterm remedies because they work at a superficial level. Invest your money wisely and choose treatments that address the signs of aging and the health of your skin simultaneously.

1. Heat

Best Treatment: Skin Tyte Skin Tyte uses an infrared beam to heat the collagen beneath the skin. As the collagen heats, the dermis coagulates, plumping the outer skin. Meanwhile, the heat stimulates the production of additional collagen to tighten the skin further. The result is firmer skin without invasive surgery. It is a very safe treatment because it heats the fibroblast cells (the cells that make collagen) under the skin’s surface without heating the skin itself. Skin tightening is a quick procedure with no downtime, and can be used on the face and neck area. It causes the skin to improve over the course of three to six months, with three to six treatments required to achieve optimal results. If you are noticing your skin beginning to lose its firmness and elasticity, this is the treatment for you. It is also recommended for women in their early to mid thirties who want to prevent the loss of elasticity and sagging as well as prevent the formation of lines and wrinkles. The average price of skin tightening is $175 to $375 depending on the area treated.

treatment requires very little downtime; your skin can appear red for up to 24 hours following treatment. Even though the skin appears visibly healed the next day, the healing continues beneath the surface for months. The fibroblast cells, which are the cells that make collagen and elastin, migrate to the injured site and produce and deposit new extracellular matrix. The new matrix cross-links and organizes itself and, over time, new collagen will begin to fill in lines and indented scars. After a few months, this new collagen will start to shorten, leading to tightening of the skin and to thicker, healthier skin. It is a cost-effective and much safer option compared to laser treatments. The average cost of this treatment is $175 to $250 per session, depending on the area treated. Cosmetic acupuncture involves the application of 40 to 75 acupuncture needles into the face, which will trigger the natural wound healing response, causing the skin to firm and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It will also have a brightening effect on the skin due to increased blood circulation to the face. A series of five to 12 treatments is recommended. The average price for a cosmetic acupuncture session is $89 to $120.

3. Active Skincare Ingredients and Skin Rolling

Your daily skincare regimen has a significant effect on both the look and health of your skin. For best results, use the following ingredients and tools: • SKN Spin (0.5mm) – The SKN Spin is a weekly micro-needling treatment that you can perform at home. It will change the look and health of your skin significantly with regular use. Learn more about the SKN Spin at www.SKNSpin.com. A cost effective way to transform your skin. • Vitamin A (all-trans retinaldehyde) – Vitamin A provides extensive benefits to the skin. It improves skin texture, repairs photo-damaged skin, and reduces and prevents the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. All-trans retinaldehyde is the most potent and least irritating form of vitamin A. • Vitamin B (niacinamide) – Niacinamide has been proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, decrease acne breakouts, and increase the skin’s production of ceramides, which protects your skin against moisture loss. This is very important because loss of moisture accentuates and accelerates aging of the skin. • Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) – Vitamin C has three major benefits for the skin: it synthesizes collagen, reduces skin damage caused by free radicals, and protects and repairs the skin from photo-damage. Vitamin C is very unstable, so be sure to purchase it in powder form and mix into a serum at the time of use. • Stem cells and growth factors (human)– Advancements in skincare technology have allowed select skincare companies to create products containing these groundbreaking growth factors. Growth factors enhance the repair of damaged cells and encourage the formation of new cells to make collagen and elastin. When purchasing products containing stem cells, look for human-based rather than plant-based products, as they are more recognizable to the skin.

This treatment uses a roller containing 192 microscopic needles (1mm-2mm) that are rolled over the skin, creating hundreds of tiny dermal injuries. Changing Smiles A Smile Story about Overcoming Obstacles By Dr. Kelvin Mah

W

Dr. Kelvin Mah

hile I don’t see myself as much of a philosopher – I leave that kind of hard work to more qualified folks – I can share a kernel of wisdom that I’ve discovered after helping many patients, from all walks of life, benefit from the transformative potential of modern dentistry: when you change your smile, you change your life! You see, a healthy, beautiful smile is so much more than strong teeth and gums. It’s a powerful force that creates opportunities, inspires joy and enables one to achieve her or

his personal and professional best. In this light, you can understand why I view modern dentistry as a craft that must be approached with the discipline, creativity, sensitivity and vision of an artist. This is a major paradigm shift from the old-fashioned view of dentistry, which focused almost entirely on devices, instruments and procedures. In modern dentistry, we go far beyond these concepts, and embrace the art of designing solutions, creating dreams and changing the lives of patients!

While we’re on the topic of changing lives, there’s someone very special I’d like you to meet: Gary. Gary is one of the most illuminating people I’ve ever met, and that’s a view shared by many! You see, after years of being stuck in a suffocating job and a frustrating life that simply wasn’t meant for him, Gary took what he called a 5-year “introspective sabbatical,” cleared out the clutter in his life – both literally and figuratively–and emerged with a dynamic vision: he would serve as a life coach, and help people conquer the obstacles that prevented them from achieving their personal and professional goals. That’s quite a profound undertaking. But then again, Gary is quite a profound person! Another of Gary’s admirable qualities is that he’s relentlessly honest with himself, and that honesty compelled him to admit that he wasn’t completely happy with his smile. He felt that the flaws in his smile had to be overcome in order for him to live the new, better life of his dreams, and help others do the same. And that’s what brought him to Smile City Square Dental. During our initial consultation, Gary shared that, while he was happy in life, he couldn’t help but notice that he wasn’t smiling much in pictures. And even when he did smile, it wasn’t radiant or inspired; rather, it was hesitant and muted. That was one aspect of what we can call Gary’s smile obstacle.

“Thank you Dr. Mah for changing both my smile and my life!” The other aspect was a bit more practical – but no less important. Gary was concerned that his smile obstacle could be, and probably was, diminishing how confident and open he was around clients. And since building rapport and developing trust was essential to his work, it was something he needed to address. As Gary shared with me at the time: How we feel about ourselves directly relates to our experience. If we are kind, gentle and compassionate with ourselves, we have the ability to be like this in the world. If we love our smile, feel good about the whiteness and contour of it, we are more eager to share it with the world, and more willing to let it shine. Similarly, with regards to coaching, I feel that when we love ourselves fully, and when we accept ourselves completely, we let our true light shine out to the world. I want to love my smile again, so that I can shine as brightly as possible and inspire others to do the same. Moved by Gary’s inspirational words, and like an artist studying a landscape before even thinking of what colours or brushes to use, I conducted a thorough evaluation of his smile – because, just as no two paintings are alike, no two smiles are alike. I also took some high-resolution digital pictures, which we reviewed to see where, how and why improvements could be made. We decided that the first step on Gary’s journey towards the smile he truly wanted was to whiten his teeth. To that end, we designed a custom whitening program – one that specifically matched his shading, along

Changing LIVES with the overall palette of his complexion. We did this to ensure that his whiter smile would align naturally with his overall look and personality, and not come across as artificial. After the whitening process was complete, I performed some asthetic contouring of Gary’s teeth. This involved smoothing over sharp angles, and creating greater symmetry and balance in his overall smile. After this, I polished Gary’s existing restorations to make them look brand new. This is yet another bit of magic made possible by modern dentistry! And lastly, I corrected the discrepancies in Gary’s bite, so that it would be comfortable and efficient. Indeed, as I have witnessed many times throughout the years, Gary wasn’t even aware of the discrepancies in his bite before it was corrected. But the moment it was, he could instantly feel the positive difference. He felt less constricted, and told me that his bite felt more centred and natural. Overall, my work with Gary was designed to overcome his smile obstacle so that he could take his life and his career to the next level. And did we succeed? Of course I have my opinion, but it’s Gary’s reflection that matters the most. Here’s what he had to say about his experience and results: Dr. Mah, working with your team was wonderful! I felt welcomed, seen and heard. I was more than a patient. I was a

31

whole person, with dreams and hopes that you allowed me to express. You then took what you heard, and made it manifest in my smile. This in turn allowed me to feel better about myself, and to see myself in a new way. Thank you Dr. Mah for changing both my smile, and my life! Helping Gary overcome his smile obstacle, so that he could fulfil his mission as an inspired and inspiring life coach, was an experience that I’ll always treasure. It was an honour to introduce him to the potential and power of modern dentistry – one that is built upon the promise that when you change your smile, you change your life!

Beautiful Skin

Begins Within By Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe, MS

A

ngela was looking at her childhood photos, taking note of her beautiful, glowing skin and realized that, at 27, her skin was already showing signs of aging. Jennifer, at 52, was shocked at how quickly after menopause her skin appeared dull and wrinkled. Kendra delivered a beautiful baby boy, but within weeks his head was covered in cradle cap and the folds of his arms had developed eczema. The cause of all these skin troubles is fatty acid deficiency – but not just any fatty acid. Beautiful skin requires a very special essential fatty acid called Gamma Linolenic Acid, also known as GLA. GLA builds better, more beautiful skin from the inside out. GLA is called “essential” because we have to get it from the food we eat. Sadly, the North American diet is made up predominantly of bad fats from red meats and processed foods devoid of “good” fats. Even if you eat well, to make matters worse, an enzyme called the delta-6-desaturease enzyme is often impaired, which means you can’t make the good fats like GLA from the foods you eat, and the only way to get this important fatty acid is from a bottle. Younger looking skin in a bottle is something your dermatologist most likely won’t tell you about. GLA is found in borage oil (20 to 24 percent) and to a lesser extent in evening primrose oil (8 to 10 percent). Fish and flax oil do not provide GLA. Consuming GLA oil is the fastest way to gorgeous skin. Some of the common reasons why the enzyme that makes GLA in the body might be impaired include low thyroid, viral infections, diabetes and prediabetes, menopause, aging, sugar consumption (on average we eat 150 lbs of sugar per year); and a deficiency of vitamins C, B6, B3, zinc and magnesium.

The Secret to Glowing, Youthful Skin

Angela will be happy to know that in one study,

younger women given GLA oil supplements showed that in less than 60 days, their skin was not losing as much moisture. Plus, over a third of those who started the study with skin rashes and irritation had none at the end of the study. GLA oil also reduced dry skin and made their skin glow. Just think if we started as children taking GLA oil – we might not wrinkle at all! Make sure your GLA oil supplement delivers a high amount of GLA (500mg per serving). Many GLA supplements just list the total oil content and you have to read the fine print for the amount of actual GLA.

GLA, Menopause and Your Skin

In women who have gone through menopause, the enzyme that converts fatty acids from our food into GLA no longer works. We have learned that GLA is the main component of beautiful skin. GLA makes your skin luminescent, dewy and glowing. The inability to make GLA after menopause is the reason why Jennifer noticed her skin become dull and wrinkled so quickly once her menstrual cycle stopped. Without sufficient GLA, the skin becomes dry, rough and wrinkled. To return your skin to its youthful glow after menopause, we must supplement with GLA. GLA also reduces inflammation in the skin associated with rashes and rosacea, which are also common in menopausal women.

of GLA per day for eczema had a 90 percent improvement over 12 weeks. Eczema is a common problem in infants and children, and GLA is safe for all ages without the side effects seen with steroid creams. During pregnancy, moms need extra GLA to ensure the baby does not become deficient. Kendra’s baby has common signs of infant GLA deficiency. Cradle cap and infant eczema or dry crusts on the skin that occur on the scalp, face, armpits, chest and groin area can be treated with topical GLA oil. One study included 48 infants with dermatitis that were given twice-daily topical applications of GLA oil for six weeks with complete relief. One teaspoon of GLA oil containing 500mg of GLA should be applied twice a day.

GLA and Sunburn

GLA also reduces the inflammation in the skin caused by the sun’s UV light. A Scandinavian study showed that when people took GLA oil supplements, it significantly reduced the effect UV light had on their skin. It took longer for their skin to turn red and burn. For those of us who do not like the ingredients in sunscreen, enhancing our skin’s ability to ward off the sun’s rays is a plus. We are spending billions of dollars annually on cosmetic treatments, yet the solution for beautiful skin can be found in a bottle of GLA oil.

GLA, Eczema and Skin Rashes

Not only is GLA important to prevent and treat wrinkled, dry skin; GLA also helps to maintain the stability and fluidity of the natural water loss barrier in our skin. Skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis, cradle cap, acne and dry skin occur when we are deficient in GLA. GLA is vital for keeping skin cells moist and strong, improving the protective function of the skin. Sixty patients given 500mg

A Cool New Way to Sculpt Your Body By Dr. Marcia Fleming

A

s a physician, I have long been interested in modalities for fat reduction. However, the efficacy of most technologies available to us over the past decade has been less than impressive. Clients see little to no improvement after multiple treatments; conversely, treatments may promote minor changes that are temporary at best. Recently, however, a breakthrough in fat reduction treatments has arrived in the form of “cool sculpting. The cool sculpting technology has been in development since 1999, with the well respected Dr. R. Rox Anderson at the helm of research and development. Dr. Anderson is the director of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and is a faculty member at the Harvard Medical School department of dermatology. His research and work in the field of photomedicine make him one of the leaders in his field, and I have followed and respected him for quite some time. Fat loss without surgery has been attempted with a variety of methodologies, especially during the last two decades in North America, and for much longer in Europe. We know that cold treatment is preferential for fat reduction. Documentation exists showing that children lose fat in their cheeks after sucking popsicles consistently; likewise, women who ride horses in cold weather experience fat loss in the thighs. CoolSculpting is a patented, FDA-cleared technology that uses a precisely controlled cold laser treatment to target, cool, and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin. The fat cells crystallize during treatment and in the weeks and months following treatment, the crystallized cells are broken down by the body and eliminated naturally. Results, therefore, are not immediate: a patient begins to see fat reduction after approximately three weeks, and full results will be seen after two to four months. The benefits of CoolSculpting include the absence of surgery, pain, downtime, or recovery time. The procedure is easy, relaxing and painfree. But the real benefits are these: it works, and it works fast. A single CoolSculpting treatment will result in a reduction in fat depth by

20 to 25 percent in the area treated. Depending on the individual patient, one treatment is often enough. Each subsequent treatment is equally effective: a two-treatment protocol would result in the reduction of fat depth by 40 to 50 percent. These results are truly well beyond any other method we have seen to date. While CoolSculpting is a new technology without a wide breadth of usage and documentation, there seem to be no untoward side effects in the approximately 100,000 patients treated to date. Many patients experience a numbness in the treated area for approximately two to three weeks following treatment. CoolSculpting is designed for people who follow a healthy diet and exercise plan and maintain a regulated weight, but have trouble with those stubborn fat deposits (love handles, back fat, thighs and hips) that are so difficult to get rid of. As with any aesthetic treatment, be sure to consult with a qualified doctor to decide what course of treatment is right for you. Dr. Marcia Fleming has been practicing in the field of cosmetic rejuvenation in the Vancouver area for over 12 years, now with locations in Delta and Burnaby. Her goal is to help everyone achieve beautiful skin for life, beginning at any age. She can be reached at Delta Laser & Skin Care Centre; call 604-543-8965 or visit www.deltalaser.ca.

Manscaping:

To Groom Or Not to Groom By Anthony Crosfield

fresh vancouver vancouver Issue Issue 11 11 34 | fresh

W

omen are accustomed to performing a certain level of “maintenance.” It is a significant part of one of the biggest and most profitable industries in the world. In recent years, men have slowly slipped into the regimen – some kicking and screaming more than others. Never before in history has there been such an emphasis on youth, and this has created a culture obsessed with hairlessness. We are not talking only about the face any longer; the grooming of body hair has become the new trend. Enter the concept of “manscaping.” The Urban Dictionary (if there were one) would define manscaping as follows: “To groom a man by shaving, waxing, plucking, or otherwise cleaning up superfluous hair.”

Grooming the Bear

We’re going to focus on the straight man for the purposes of this article because, let’s face it, the gay community embraced manscaping long ago, truly understanding the value of grooming. Let’s suppose your boyfriend or husband (or you, Mr. Reader, if you are indeed a mister) was clean shaven, young and smooth when you met. Fast forward a few productive years and you start to notice hair showing up in places it never used to be. This can be a touchy subject, as there are men who exhibit “Fur Pride.” Similar to a Sampson complex, Fur Pride occurs when a natural furriness is considered to be hyper-masculine and tied to virility. Approach the subject with caution, gently and in a non-threatening environment, as you would any bear. Do not text a request for hair removal. In general, grown men should have some body hair. The trend of over-grooming chests, backs and especially eyebrows has reached ridiculous heights. Straight men in particular need to leave their eyebrows alone, though a little help in the middle is okay when required.

But please: If you do not know when to stop, do NOT start! Step away from your grooming equipment. Enlist a pro to help. Straight men get carried away and inadvertently create eyebrows that are too shaped and too far apart; seriously, you could drag a disposable razor between ‘em (oh… you probably did). Do you really play hockey with those eyebrows? How does that go over in the locker room? There is nothing wrong with a little trim here and a pluck there, but guys, pay attention here: get a clipper set. Ensure it has a selection of guards: a very important safety feature! If you’re freaked out, enlist some help. (Your significant other might just get a kick out of it!) Always start with the longest guard on the clippers – it can be alarming enough to see all of yourself again; just imagine her shock!

Servicing the Man

There are countless spas and boutiques that cater to every whim of hair removal for men. The trend is becoming more mainstream and many hair salons are offering these services to their male clientele. Consider the volume of media – both print and television – that caters specifically to hair removal and a new ideal of beauty for men. If you don’t believe me, try a quick internet search on the topic of manscaping, and see the volume of products, services and businesses that cater to the grooming of men. Ladies, if you want to send your man to the spa, you’ll have to do your homework. Find one that’s comfortable for him and that he’ll be willing to go to. Gents, if you’re looking for a place on your own, find a place that feels right for you. Most important is to find a salon with staff that are properly accredited. Do your research. Currently, this industry is not regulated in BC. Unfortunately, it is buyer beware, and the risks, complications and infections that come with poorly operated businesses can be nasty and

health threatening. That said, most businesses are well run and hygienic. Now, once you arrive at the salon, what are you going to have done? Let’s have a look at some of the best manscaping options available today: • Electrolysis: One of the best and my current fave. Great for beard lines and hairlines at the neck. Can be a bit pricey and stings a little, but it works and is permanent. • Laser hair removal: Also pricey and stings a bit more than electrolysis. Both of these processes work best on dark hair, so get that nose hair zapped now before it turns grey like your “nose full of hair” grandpa. • Trimming: Men typically prefer to trim themselves, but if you have a trusting, daring side, assistance can be fun. After all, there are places you can’t reach that you might want to tidy up! As a hairstylist, I have had to ask more than once as I trim up the nape of the neck, “Should I stop at your chain or the neck of your T- shirt?” Let the youth have their soft skin moment; as adults, we need to keep things “tidy” without going overboard. Good luck, and remember: “Easy on the Tweezy.”

When fat grafting works, there is no better alternative. However, it requires very skilled techniques, is expensive to perform, and remains unpredictable even in very experienced hands. Unfortunately, however, the amount of fat that survived when transplanted proved to be unpredictable at times. Surgeons had to perform multiple procedures to achieve optimal filling. Many elected to “over-correct” an area in anticipation of a less than 100 percent survival of the transplanted cells. This approach led to numerous disastrous outcomes when too much fat died or too much fat survived. Infections, scarring and disappointments were common. When fat grafting works, there is no better alternative. However, it requires very skilled techniques, is expensive to perform, and remains unpredictable even in very experienced hands. Pharmaceutical and medical device companies rapidly developed “off the shelf ” temporary and semi-permanent fillers to meet the demand to fill and plump the slowly deflating faces of baby boomers. Today, the most popular of these materials include a variety of hyaluronic acid gel fillers that, when injected, can last six to 12 months or longer. Their predictable filling effect, proven safety, adjustability and convenience has made injectable dermal fillers one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world. In skilled and experienced hands, facial volume loss can be safely restored with a simple, officebased treatment. Another exciting feature of fat that is reviving our interest in grafting techniques is in the area of stem cell rich treatments. Fat has the highest percentage of multi-potential stem cells of any tissue in the body. The previously unknown easy access to stem cells is driving research and development of treatments and potential cures for many degenerative and age-related diseases. We may learn that fat is not just an annoyance, but may prove to be an unrecognized solution for many of the cosmetic and medical challenges we face. A Weighty Matter:

7 Tricks You Haven’t Tried By Rob Williams

nyone who’s tried it knows that losing weight isn’t easy. There’s a lot more to losing body fat than a simple ‘calories in vs. calories out’ approach. Factors like hormones, metabolism, motivation and momentum all play a role. To be successful, you must master your body, your mind and your menu, establishing an environment that encourages fat to melt away. In twenty years, I’ve seen a lot of success and just as much failure from people striving for weight loss. A successful approach is most often one that follows recognized principles and involves dedication and discipline, with a healthy measure of hard work. That said, there are a few tricks that can give you an edge and increase your chances of success, perhaps by offering the right boost of inspiration or by helping you break bad habits. Here are a few favourite tricks that I’ve seen work wonders over the years: 1. Surf ’s up! Book a sunny vacation with your fit friends. The thought of playing beach volleyball or splashing in the surf next to hard-bodied friends will surely inspire you to step up your training intensity and tighten up your eating plan. At the very least, you’ll have a great time. 2. MMA-zing! Watch recordings of motivating sports or television shows. Whether it’s mixed martial arts, old Rocky movies or The Bachelor, most of us have a favourite show that inspires us to work harder to reach the training and fitness goals that are always just out of reach. Be sure to watch recordings rather than live TV so you can skip the persuasive junk food commercials. 3. Soup du jour... If you struggle to find comforting meals that provide good nutrition and taste without massive amounts of calories, try slurping a good soup! Make your own, or purchase a low-calorie, low-sodium vegetablebased organic soup that you love, and add clean protein sources like quinoa or chopped up chicken breast. Snack on fresh raw vegetables. 4. Say cheese! Take pictures of your meals (before you eat them!) and email them to yourself. The accountability factor is huge, and will really make you stop and think about what it is that you’re about to put in your mouth. The last thing you want at night is to open an email with a picture of the cheeseburger and fries you ate for lunch. 5. Clench it! Why not burn more calories while you’re riding the bus or sitting in your office chair? Try performing rhythmic isometric contractions of your major muscle groups every time you’re sedentary. The increased muscle activation burns more calories and boosts your metabolism, even if it does make people wonder what you’re up to. 6. Stand tall! The smartest trainers know they can help their clients look their best in the shortest time possible with better alignment. Try standing with your back to a wall and being as tall as you can with your hips, shoulders and head back against the wall. Now walk away and hold this posture. Although you might not have actually lost any weight, you’ll sure look like you’ve just dropped ten pounds in your new, upright posture. 7. Tips please! Often, it’s not what you do when it comes to weight loss, it’s what you don’t do! Each and every time you resist temptation, drop a loonie in a jar. At the end of four weeks, spend every last penny on something new and frivolous. Spoil yourself! It’s a win-win situation: you lose weight and pay yourself to do so!

Ayurvedic Corner:

Optimal Health: An Ayurvedic Perspective By Sam Hari

T

he ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda places great emphasis on preventative measures that will enable one to maintain and improve health. In order to properly understand what makes a person healthy, we must first understand the concept of a healthy person. According to The World Health Organization (WHO), health is defined as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” I am often asked, what makes a person healthy? Of course, Ayurveda defines health a little differently than what most of us are accustomed to. It goes a little more in-depth. According to the principles of Ayurveda, Swastha (a healthy person) is defined as a person who: • Has maintained their Prakriti (body’s natural state of being). When a person is conceived, the balance of elemental energies known as doshas are present in a particular balance that is unique the individual. This balance never changes and is the perfect state of balance for that person. Any deviation in this leads to an imbalance which, in turn, can lead to disease. • Has their three Doshas functioning properly. The three Doshas are our elemental-based energies, which reside in our bodies in varying degrees. They are: Vata (air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth). • Has proper Agni (digestive power). According to Ayurveda, Agni, or digestive fire, is one of the most important things to maintain. Weakened Agni is one of the two root causes of disease in Ayurveda, so watching over the digestive fires in our bodies is of utmost importance. It is said in ancient texts that once all Agni has left the body, we die.

• Has proper functioning of Dhatus (the seven tissues in accordance to the principles of Ayurveda). Each of the Dhatus has its corresponding Agni. If this is not managed properly, again we can run into problems at the tissue level. • Eliminates wastes and toxins accumulated in the body properly and in a timely manner. This is especially important as wastes that are not eliminated from the body remain in the system as toxins and can cause problems. Toxins must be released in a timely manner through sweating, urination or defecation. • Has sharpness of the senses, including touch, taste, smell and vision. • Has a clear, calm, stable and peaceful state of mind. It is also important to remember that we live in a society and, as a result, we must surround ourselves with good people. One unhappy person can sometimes affect a whole group. Since happiness is fundamental to overall health, it’s very important to maintain healthy and happy connections with the people in our lives. Allowing ourselves the opportunity to maintain these things in our lives allows us to reach a place of health that is within us all; a place of optimal health and happiness. Sam Hari is an Ayurvedic practioner at West Coast Ayurveda, specializing in Ayurvedic consultations, along with diet and lifestyle recommendations to help maintain a happy and healthy life. Assistance using traditional Ayurvedic methods to manage many ailments is also available. To find out how this ancient wisdom can help you achieve and maintain optimal health or help manage chronic conditions, visit us online at www.ayurvedichealing.com or call 604.569.3596 to book an appointment today.

Ayurvedic Health Tip:

Drinking hot water is a classic Ayurvedic recommendation for balancing Vata and Kapha doshas, strengthening digestive power and reducing metabolic waste (Ama) that may have accumulated in your system. • Boil tap water or mineral water in an open saucepan for at least ten minutes. Do not microwave the water. • Keep this water in a thermos and take a few sips every half-hour throughout the day. It is the frequency rather than the quantity that is important. • To increase the positive effects of boiled water, add one or two slices of fresh ginger (or a pinch of ginger powder) to the water when boiling. This will help enhance digestive power.

How to Choose the Right Financier for Your Procedure By Arne Hassel-Gren

W

hether you’re planning plastic surgery or a less invasive procedure, the last thing that you want to worry about is your own financial situation. However, the reality is that you must pay for the work you’re having done, and, in most cases, this means finding a reliable and reputable financier. Procedures performed by highly rated, licensed doctors cost money, and they often represent a significant financial investment on the part of patients. Without third-party financing that helps you to space out payments over a longer term, you may be out of luck. Instead of waiting to build up the savings that you need, why not take the initiative and find a financier who can offer you an attractive consumer loan that covers all of the costs of your procedure? Today, it’s easy to get instant, online pre-approval for these sorts of term financing loans. In many instances, this type of financing is already available right in your doctor’s office – all you need to do is ask for it. Many men and women try to save up for the procedures they dream of having, but life just gets in the way: unexpected bills and financial pressures surface and eat up savings in a flash. When it comes to saving up for costly procedures, something will probably always get in the way and slow down the entire process… unless you opt for a consumer loan through a financier. But how do you choose the right financier for your personal needs?

Financing Options: Pros and Cons

To help you understand whether a third-party (non-bank) financier is right for you, we’ve compiled a handy list of pros and cons for every common payment type: Cash payments: Obviously, paying cash is a workable method if you’ve got enough to spare; however, using all or most of your disposable income to pay for a procedure is never wise. You should always have enough money in your account to cover emergencies and typical living expenses. Line of credit (LOC) financing: This type of financing features a lower interest rate, and payments may be interest-only. Line of credit financing is always there when you need it. However, using all of the funds in a line of credit means less available cash when emergencies crop up. Interest is variable, so you may be hit with extra charges on your loan when rates change; plus, credit limits may be altered on short notice, which could ruin your plans.

Credit cards: Using “plastic” to pay for plastic surgery or minimally invasive procedures has advantages and disadvantages. One key advantage is the easy access to the funds you need. You may also accrue valuable air miles or loyalty points when you choose to pay for procedures with a major credit card. However, credit cards often carry higher rates of interest. Credit cards may also carry an annual fee that adds to your total procedure expense. The worst downside to using a credit card for plastic surgery is the risk of “maxing out” a card, making it impossible to pay for other required purchases. Loan from local bank: Getting a loan from a local bank will not really ensure privacy and confidentiality, and approval may be too slow for your needs. The amount you’re approved for (if you get approved) may not be enough to cover all your plastic surgery expenses. However, these types of local bank loans do offer reasonable interest rates. Third-party financing through a financier: Getting a loan through a third-party, non-bank financier has many advantages; for example, you may expect optimal confidentiality. This type of financing is also extremely quick, and you will be able to pay your doctor directly. Discreet and practical, third-party financiers also have great connections – in many cases, they can refer you to a wealth of great surgeons and practitioners. You can borrow less from a financier than you would be able to through a bank; this makes it easier to avoid overspending. Borrowing as little as two thousand dollars with same-day approval is another key bonus of working with a financier; you’ll also gain access to flexible terms and interest rates, and you won’t be penalized for early payout. Low monthly payment plans make it easy to afford even the most costly procedures, and you don’t need any collateral. With this type of financing, you will pay a slight premium on rate. The best financiers offer attractive interest rates and reasonable loan conditions. They provide personal service to help you to set up and pay for your procedures. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to enjoy the cosmetic improvements you’ve been waiting for.
