I

t was pure serendipity that our Fresh Vancouver travel issue coincided with my own recent travels. Fittingly, much of this issue was written or edited in Paris, London and Amsterdam. After interviewing the fabulous and successful (and need I say stunning?) Claire Newell of Travel Best Bets, my travel bug was as agitated as it has ever been. I absolutely love to travel, and it had been a number of years since I’d fed that hungry bug. My trip was a wonderful reminder of our need to explore the world outside the parameters of our daily lives. It was also an incredible opportunity to enjoy some time with my husband. How many years slide by without taking that time to reconnect? As we admired the sophistication of London, the exquisite polish of Paris, and the old-world charm (and seedy underbelly) of Amsterdam, I was reminded once again that travel feeds us in so many ways. How to Prevent Aging

A

t some point, the mirror betrays you. It shakes your sense of youth with the first noticeable signs of aging – little wrinkles around the eyes, sun spots and some sagging skin. There used to be only a few options for turning back the clock without going under the knife. But today, an emerging trend in anti-aging combines facial procedures with natural approaches to soften the signs of aging.

Your Anti-Aging Plan

In your twenties and thirties, the face still has an ample amount of natural fullness since the underlying structures have yet to be affected by any significant aging process. Despite the fullness, you will notice the very first lines and wrinkles around the eyes, as well as slight bags and dark circles under the eyes. The key is doing smaller procedures for enhancement and prevention, while focusing attention on the practice of proper diet and lifestyle habits to maintain a youthful look. This approach helps sidestep more extensive procedures later on.

Monitor your age spots for asymmetry, border, colour, diameter and evolving size, shape or symptoms. If you notice any changes, inform your doctor immediately to rule out skin cancer. W

e’ve all seen them dozens of times: those dental ads on TV or in magazines, where a smiling patient is lying back in a dental chair beneath the watchful gaze of her or his dentist who, of course, is wearing about the whitest, starchiest lab coat that you’ve ever seen. I’ll be frank with you: yes, that scene does take place in many dental practices, including my own (except the part about Dr Kelvin Mah the starchy white lab coat – my stylish wife would never let me commit such an outrageous fashion crime). However, what these dental ads fail to capture is that the individuals in a dentist’s chair are infinitely more than patients: they’re people! That means they have unique lifestyles, essential values and personal philosophies. And that’s why I invest quality time with each person who comes to my practice, so that I can understand and appreciate the wholeness of their personality, the distinctiveness of their essential being, and the richness of their vision. When Mike arrived for his treatment, I began by preparing his teeth so that I could save the maximum amount of original tooth structure. The conservative nature of this treatment is quite an advantage, as no human-made material – however well-crafted – works as well as one’s own natural tooth structure. Next, I used CEREC’s special camera to take images of Mike’s sculpted tooth surfaces, then created his restorations using CEREC’s powerful CAD-CAM software. Finally, I milled the restorations on-site out of a block of extremely strong, high-grade ceramic designed to match the colour and feel of Mike’s smile, and installed them. All this took place in a single visit! I was delighted with the results, but of course, Mike’s view is much more important: “The convenience of having the treatment performed in a single visit was great. I also found the overall experience relaxing and comfortable, which was a nice surprise – in the past, I would flinch at the thought of going to the dentist. I also appreciated how friendly and professional Dr. Mah was, and how he did everything right the first time. He really got to know me on a personal level, and helped me understand the process. And I’m very pleased with the durability of my new restorations. have a confession to make: I am terrible at doing my nails. It’s just not one of those girly abilities I was blessed with, and I am in constant envy of perfectly polished pinkies. That said, there are other impediments to my sought-after state of manicured bliss. First, while I love getting my toes done and consider a professional pedicure a perfectly allowable indulgence, keeping up with one’s toes can be time-consuming, and it can get pretty expensive over time. Like many women, I just don’t seem to have enough hours in any given day, and there are a great many other demands for my money. How on earth am I supposed to keep up with my beauty routines? The second problem is that, for some reason, for the life of me, I can’t seem to maintain a manicure for any length of time. Yes, I type for a living – and I’ve been told I’m a rather enthusiastic typist, so perhaps the sheer velocity of my click-clacking shakes that pretty paint away. Yes, I have two young children, which means a great deal of hand washing, plenty of dishes and bathtub time each day. Perhaps it is simply that my manicure can’t withstand the near-constant immersion in water. Or perhaps it’s the abuse at the hands of all the toys and dirt that those adorable little monsters were evidently born with... Whatever the case, suffice it to say, my manicures don’t last and my pedicures require more maintenance than they get. And since I look as though I’ve allowed my six-year-old to paint my nails (again) when I do it myself, I tend to have unadorned fingers and unattended-to toes. So I decided to consult an expert. Katharine Lam of South Granville Laser and Skin Care Centre has made a career of manicures, pedicures and other esthetic services. To her, the business of caring for hands and feet is a lifestyle, a passion and an art form. She provided me with the following tips that I hope other mani-pedi-challenged Fresh Vancouver readers might appreciate.

LC: How often do I need to refresh my manicures and pedicures? Katherine: For best results, pedicures should be done every four to six

weeks, and manicures ideally once a week. The timing will depend on the individual client, however. Women with callous build-up or corns, bunions or other problems might want to come for pedicures more frequently. It’s not just about looking good; there is a therapeutic element to this as well. The hands and feet need massage to stimulate circulation and help with anti-aging. Reflexology is wonderful for both.

LC: How can I make my manicures last longer?

oil will work.You don’t need to spend a fortune to take care of yourself. Spend some time massaging your lotions and oils in each night. The heat creates circulation and blood flow. It’s an anti-aging remedy that costs nothing! Be sure to remove manicure polish after one week; otherwise, it can cause brittle nails. Use a remover that is free of acetone and contains a moisturizer.

LC: How should I care for my feet between pedicures? Katherine: Use a paddle or pumice stone in the shower every day. It

doesn’t take long for those calluses to build up again. After a shower, be sure to dry completely between the toes. Moisture can lead to bacteria and pre-fungal symptoms. Calluses and ingrown toenails can be the result of ill-fitting shoes. Take your shoes off at home, but note that walking barefoot can cause the bottoms of your feet to become dry and cracked, and can lead to more calluses. Use a good foot lotion daily, and massage it in.

LC: How can I make it less expensive? Katherine: By caring for your hands and feet between treatments, you

can maintain your manicures and pedicures and stretch the time between treatments. Also take advantage of promotions and specials offered at your spa or salon. Talk to the practitioner about the possibility of purchasing packages as well.

LC: What is the trick to a beautiful mani-pedi? Katherine: Thoroughness. A good manicure or pedicure is a thorough

one, which means treating each client’s particular problems. That might mean longer soaking times, paraffin wax for cracked heels, or a great massage. These are healing, therapeutic treatments – not just cosmetic. They should make you feel better all over: mind, body and spirit.

LC: What do most of us do wrong at home? Katherine: Over-trimming! Many people trim their toenails too ag-

gressively, which causes ingrown nails. Another problem I see is overzealous use of a heel blade. This can create bad results, as people take off the good skin and not just the calluses. It’s better to use paddles instead.

Katherine: Invest in a good hand cream containing collagen or vitamin

E – something rich and sustaining. Apply it at times when you’re not washing your hands, which typically means bedtime. If you don’t like the greasy film of richer lotions, put it on the backs of your hands. Also use a cuticle oil such as avocado, vitamin E or almond oil – even olive

Dr Anita Fofie Q: Now that summer is over in Vancouver and the autumn rain has started, do I still have to wear sunscreen every day?

Dr Lydia Waterson Q: How important is it to pay attention to ingredients in my daily beauty routine?

A: Absolutely! Most of understand that up to 80 percent of what we perceive as “aging” in the skin is directly attributable to the effects of ultraviolet rays from the sun. We diligently wear our wide-brimmed hats and SPF on summer days, but what many people don’t realize is that even on Vancouver’s cloudiest days we are exposed to a significant amount of skin-aging rays. Just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean ultraviolet rays aren’t getting through. Sitting in your car or sitting indoors in front of a window won’t protect you from dermatoheliosis (the technical term for sun damage). Just look at the image of this truck driver, half of whose face was exposed to sun through an open or closed truck window for many years, while the other half was in the shade of the truck. UV rays are even emitted from some light bulbs and computer screens. Just because you’re not lying on a beach doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need protection. If you’re looking for the single least expensive and simplest thing to add to your anti-aging regimen, forget expensive lasers, Botox and dermal fillers, and start using sunscreen every day, all day. Your skin will thank you.

A: Today, we know that the toxicity and cancer-causing potential of cosmetics and personal care products are well documented. As recently as 1997, the US general accounting office identified more than125 cosmetic ingredients suspected of causing cancer and birth defects. The skin is the largest living organ of the body and many carcinogens will be absorbed through the skin straight into the bloodstream. A University of Pittsburgh study found that twice as many chemicals are absorbed through the skin as through the intestine. These ingredients have been found in well known and respected brand products. They include synthetic dyes, formaldehyde, DEA, PABA, sodium laurel sulphate, PEG (polyetheline glycol) fluoride, talc and fragrances. Most cosmetics will list “fragrance”; however, fragrance is mostly a mix of over 600 raw materials and synthetic chemicals. We know that 95 percent of fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum. Artificial fragrance is found in everything from baby lotions to face creams, deodorant, shampoo and conditioners. Talc is not absorbed through the skin; however, it may be contaminated with traces of asbestos, a substance well known for causing a severe form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Talc is also dangerous for use on female genitalia as it can enter the body and cause ovarian cancer.

Beauty Night Society By Liberty Craig

I

t all started as a research project. Caroline McGillivray was asked by her best friend from theatre school to play a part in a screenplay about girls being recruited into the sex trade. To learn more about the role she would play, Caroline began volunteering on the downtown eastside at a facility that served dinner to 100 people in need each night. “It was the first point of contact for many abused women,” said Caroline in a conversation with Fresh Vancouver. “These people experience things that should never happen to any human being.” The stories Caroline has from her experience are staggering. “One woman asked me what it was like to be a child. Then she told me that by the time she was four years old, her father was having sex with her. By age 10, she’d been in and out of so many foster homes it seemed easier to be on the street. I got to know her as time went by. We became friends.” These stories, these women and these relationships kept Caroline coming back, doing whatever she could to help. And then it happened: an incident that would change her life forever. “One night, a badly bruised woman came in,” Caroline relates. “She didn’t want food; didn’t want to talk. She only wanted to take a shower. Afterwards, she noticed a curling iron that had been donated, and asked if she could use it. But she couldn’t hold her battered arms up long enough to make it work, and I could see that she was just hanging on, trying so hard not to cry. So I offered to do her hair.” In that one moment, that single act of human kindness, a concept was unleashed that would take on great momentum and become

an entity unto itself. “I don’t know anything about doing hair, and I did it so badly!” laughs Caroline. “It looked terrible! We were killing ourselves laughing. The hair didn’t matter; what was important was the conversation and that bonding that happens when you’re doing hair and makeup together, like being a kid. That laughter and friendship. Afterwards, she gave me a huge hug, and she always came back and asked me to do her hair. Then other women started asking.” As a volunteer, Caroline’s job was to help

Beauty Night Society’s mission is to build selfesteem and help change lives. the facility provide the core needs for women in survival mode: a safe space, a meal, a shower, access to victim services or medical care. But she knew she could make a difference in another way. She contacted acquaintances in the film industry who could do hair and makeup. She spoke to the volunteer coordinator at the facility. And thus was born the Beauty Night Society. December 2000 was the first Beauty Night event. Fourteen volunteers and 72 women showed up. Caroline and her staff were blown

away. Now, Beauty Night Society sees about 200 women each and every week, and are on the verge of hitting 26,000 makeovers since the organization first began. The goal is not to do hair. Beauty Night Society’s mission is to build self-esteem and help change lives, giving women the gifts of laughter, community and confidence. “People were asking for this,” comments Caroline. “We just gave them what they wanted. There are wonderful base-needs organizations in the city. What we offer is something different; something that works in partnership with those organizations.” Beauty Night Society offers three streams of programming for women and youth living in poverty, including wellness, life skills development, and makeovers. Their mandate is to treat everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of socio-economic status, and that no person should be invisible or isolated from their community. Never would Caroline have believed that so many women would want to participate in the numerous Beauty Night events over the past 12 years. Never would she have guessed there would be so many eager volunteers and willing partners. “People want to be part of it,” said Caroline. “Life surprises you.”

MRI Advancements Mean Early Detection

magine finding cancers before they begin to grow. Imagine identifying an aneurysm before it becomes life-threatening. Now, with whole body imaging, you absolutely can. Dr Raj Attariwala, MD, PhD, is a radiologist, nuclear medicine physician and biomedical engineer. lems with mainstream diagnostic imaging programs in Canada?

Dr Attariwala: The main problem has to do

with the wait times. When I tell people at international MRI conferences that waiting times for an MRI in Canada can be six months for


something as simple as a knee, their jaws drop. I had one doctor from Europe ask me whether Canada is really a developed country! Also, because wait times for MRI are such an impediment in Canada, ultrasound or CT scan might be suggested instead. In my opinion, CT of the low back and pelvis on a female of childbearing age should be banned, because it delivers a lot of radiation to the ovaries and cannot see the ovaries or uterus anyway. The rest of the developed world uses MRI for these areas. Even a few years ago, people had no idea about the risks of radiation. Now there is a growing awareness, especially in the US. Young people and females are more sensitive to radiation. The most sensitive organ in the body to radiation is the ovaries. MRI is also much more powerful than CT. We saw a woman last week who had “normal” CT scan results, but she knew things weren’t normal. She asked for a second opinion and was sent to AIM, and sure enough our specialized scans showed a big mass. CT just wasn’t sensitive enough to pick it up.

do–not even in the United States. Whenever we see someone who’s been diagnosed with cancer, they almost always say they wish they’d known about a way to find it earlier. If you can detect cancer in the early stages, the prognosis is always better. With cancer, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich, poor, black, white; we’re all susceptible. You can have all the money in the world, like Steve Jobs, but you can’t buy health. For his

type of cancer, if it had been detected in stage one, he likely would have survived. And we’re not only looking at cancer; we’re looking at the brain and blood vessels, looking for risk of stroke, aneurysm – things like that. We can see almost everything.

FV: What makes the AIM method so different? Dr Attariwala: A number of things make our

method different. For starters, we have a customized machine that delivers different results. It is modified according to my specifications, and the hardware is two to three times more powerful than anything else out there. We have different technology to analyze and display these results. We can see far more than pretty much anybody else can in the world right now. We basically turn a person into a three-dimensional molecular structure. With no drugs, dyes or radiation, we can see everything we need to see. We can adjust and customize our different applications to target the right areas and get the desired results. Our MRI technologist is one of the most qualified in Canada. Plus, in most clinics, there is no radiologist interacting with the technicians. Our process is also unique. When a patient comes in, we ask a few questions, then run a highly customized MRI sequence, then go over the images with the patient. We show each person exactly what is going on, and answer every question. Then we give him or her a report to take home that day, which can be given to a family doctor, physiotherapist, or whomever needs it.

FV: Tell us about “whole body imaging”... Dr Attariwala: Whole body scans are a revolutionary study and nobody does it the way we

FV: Shouldn’t everyone do whole body imaging? Dr Attariwala: The biggest impediment with

whole body imaging is cost. One of my main goals is to speed it up, to make the sequences tighter, faster, and more cost-effective – which will make it accessible to more people. If we can shorten the time, we can lessen the expense, since the equipment is extremely expensive to operate and maintain. The Canadian population needs help right now. Three months later, 21 years old and with no background in broadcasting, I sent a proposal to YouTV, and they called me the very next day. I had suggested simply providing information, but was asked to present on TV. So I did. Then I got a call a year and a half later from a person I will be forever grateful to, the president of BCTV at the time. I went over to BCTV (now Global BC) once a month for two minutes. Now, I’m on five times a week for between 2.5 and 9 minutes. “My first book led to many more things. Following a media tour for my book, I got invited to do my first guest appearance on the Today Show – which I’ve continued doing from time to time. That led to being a spokesperson for Disney in the US. I also do some work for YVR, tourism boards and other organizations It’s all grown organically over the years.”

Around the World with Kids in Tow

“My kids are good little travellers and have travelled since they were babies. Now we’re starting to take them further afield. They’ve been to the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey. Last Christmas, we went to Panama. At spring break we are taking them on an African Safari. And they love it – I’m grateful that they don’t feel like I’m dragging them. “If you’re travelling with an infant, you don’t want to be that person 30,000 feet in the air with a screaming child. And sometimes you can’t help it. But you need to take responsibility, and bring every single thing you might need, and lots of extras. With kids who are a little older, engage them in the trip itself. Let them

know exactly what they’re going to experience. Encourage them to write down their favourite thing that day and take a picture. Get them involved and excited.”

Voluntourism

“When my son was seven and my daughter was nine we went to Jamaica and worked in an orphanage for three days. At first my kids said to me, why are we buying things for people we don’t even know? But by the time we left three days later, they would have given the shirts off their backs. I remember my son looking out the car window as we drove away, and he said, ‘Who tucks those kids in at night, Mommy?’ They started to not only realize that they have it good, but how important it is to help others. “More and more people are starting to do voluntourism. You don’t have to go for three weeks or six months. If we don’t have time in our busy lives, we can still donate a day. What I hope people understand about voluntourism is that it can be just one day. Even if you just spend a few hours, you can still have a five-star vacation the rest of the time.”

Giving Back

“I decided that all the book revenues would go to charity. I decided to give to children’s charities – whether that means orphanages or women’s shelters or single mother support. From the Claire Newell Suite at the Pan Pacific Hotel, ten percent of all proceeds from the suites in both Vancouver and Whistler are channelled to Canuck Place. I’m really grateful to Pan Pacific for agreeing to do that. I do feel kind of strange putting my name on a suite, but to have the money go to charity makes it okay!”

Doing It All

“I’m lucky to have a loyal and smart team around me. It allows me to do everything that I do. I need to have a nanny in order to get out the door – the hardest job I’ve ever had to hire for. The first few people I hired for Jubilee are now managing my travel business. I have people who know me enough to do things the way I would do it, and have me put on the final touches. But I have to be the person who writes the articles and appears on TV, so I have to be extremely well organized. There’s not a single day where my alarm goes off after 5:30 in the morning.”

Sweat vs. Chocolate

“I don’t really like to sweat. I’d rather pass on a chocolate bar than have to sweat if off for 30

minutes on a treadmill! I’m very careful with what I eat. I power walk with my best friend of twenty-five years as a way of catching up. I do like Pilates – again, you don’t have to sweat! I agreed to do it because my husband had major back surgery so we do it together once a week.”

Good Skincare, Good Genes

“My mother has never done anything other than make sure she washes her makeup off and uses a good moisturizer, and if I look half as good as she does at her age, I will be a lucky woman. I’m tempted to try so many skincare treatments, but being on TV, I don’t have any downtime. I can’t have a bright red face from a chemical peel, for example! For my birthday, my mom buys me really good skincare products. I’ve used StriVectin for probably five years, and now I use the serum under my moisturizer, and the night cream as well. I wash off all my makeup every single day and exfoliate three times a week to keep my pores from enlarging. I also use an anti-aging primer by Korres.”

“Six days after my son was born, 9/11 changed the face of travel forever. I was on TV that day. I could see my baby in his car seat as I was on TV talking about how I thought this would affect travel – and I was on every day for the next week. Days after giving birth, I felt unattractive and uncomfortable. I had heavy bangs; I wore dark-rimmed glasses; I had gained weight with the baby. Being on TV when you look like that is tough. I was pregnant on the early news the day before I went into labour, so people really have seen me at every stage! “I feel very indebted to a woman named Pam Mason at Global BC. She was the one who said to me, listen girl, stop wearing only black. She said, let’s colour your hair, grow the bangs out, wear contacts. She kind of glammed me up for TV; changed my look. I think as I get into my forties, I know who I am now. I’m coming into my own.” FV

Everything in Moderation

“I eat well. Breakfast is always a cup of coffee and a piece of fruit. I take a multivitamin every morning. Then I’m out the door. Around 10:30 I usually have a small snack. For lunch every day I have water and a turkey sandwich with lots of veggies, mustard on both sides, salt and pepper. Around 3:30 I get so hungry I could eat my arm, so I normally have Greek yogurt or a piece of fruit and some dark chocolate – which I manage to incorporate every single day! Dinner is usually a piece of protein, lots of veggies and a small bit of carbs, and then some sort of treat. I’m a fudgesicle girl! I don’t want to deprive myself. If someone tells me I can’t, I’ll go eat that entire bag of Oreos, not just one. Everything in moderation – from food to wine to chocolate.”

Surviving Travel Beautifully

“I don’t care what I look like in flight. Wear slip-on shoes, comfy pants, bring a pillow and a blanket. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol. Eat very lightly and avoid salt. Go for fresh fruit and veggies and tons of water. For longer flights, get some sleep – even if you have to take a sleeping pill. Talk to your doctor about that. I wear a very light amount of makeup for a flight, then just freshen up at the end of the flight. Bring your moisturizer and toothbrush. I also wear glasses so my contacts don’t dry out.”

he colder weather of fall means stylish coats and chunky scarves and – my personal favourite – great boots. But it also means time to pay special attention to your skin in the wake of all that skin-damaging summer sun. Addressing dark pigmentation and wrinkles before they become severe is the simplest form of treatment and prevention. Besides, isn’t fall the perfect time for a pre-holiday makeover?

Shannon’s Confidenceboosting Makeover

Shannon Keenan felt uncomfortable with a number of problem areas that she was forever hiding or covering up. She had dark sunspots on her face that she religiously slathered with concealer before leaving the house each day. She had small creases in her earlobes that she felt aged her, and that she covered by wear-

ing earrings everywhere she went. She was also self-conscious about the lines around her mouth, and particularly the frown line between her eyes that she felt made her look angry. When Fresh Vancouver approached Shannon about the possibility of doing a makeover, she was elated. “I had aged rapidly in the past few years,” she said. “I looked tired and angry – even when I wasn’t! I just wanted the way I looked on the outside to match how I feel on the inside, which is happy!” Shannon’s makeover journey took her to the Delta Skin and Laser Care Centre, where Dr. Marcia Fleming assessed Shannon’s skin tone and problem areas, and created a course of treatment for her. Dr. Fleming felt that Shannon’s concerns were typical of a woman her age, though the dark spots on her face were indicative of extensive sun damage. But she felt that Shannon had good skin tone, with excellent

subcutaneous tissue. Her skin hadn’t “deflated” or become creped, and Dr. Fleming knew it would respond well to treatment.

The Treatments

Dr. Fleming began with the Skin TX Hyperpigmentation Program, created by Vivier Pharma. This at-home remedy is a five-step skincare program that must be applied twice daily. The combination of alpha hydroxy acid, vitamin C, vitamin A and hydroquinone in the lotion works to decrease pigmentation, which facilitates greater effectiveness of the IPL treatments that Shannon would also receive. The next step in Shannon’s facial makeover was the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, also known as a photo facial. IPL uses light energy to target the epidermis, or outer layers of the skin. The treatment is particularly effective for removing dark hyperpigmentation spots


like Shannon’s. Dr. Fleming usually recommends four to five treatments for sun damage of this calibre, though in Shannon’s case, only two were completed during the course of her makeover. The IPL treatment literally lifts the dark pigmentation to the surface of the skin, where it takes on a coffee-grind appearance and is darker and more uneven than before. It can be removed with a 30-minute microdermabrasion (as was done with Shannon) or will eventually exfoliate naturally. Each treatment has an immediate, noticeable effect, and the cumulative effects can be outstanding. Dr. Fleming continued Shannon’s makeover with two Titan treatments spaced four weeks apart. Titan is an infrared light with a longer wavelength than IPL. The long wavelength targets the dermis, the deeper layer of skin, to stimulate collagen production and lift the skin. Titan is an effective method of bring-

ing back that youthful look to the skin; it is also the best preventative procedure for aging skin, according to Dr. Fleming. “The great thing about Titan,” said Dr. Fleming, “is that we can fool the body into stimulating collagen without traumatizing the skin.” While results are noticeable immediately, the best results are apparent six months after treatment. Next step: Botox. With great attention to subtlety, Dr. Fleming applied Botox to Shannon’s frown lines, crow’s feet, and upper lip. She also used it to soften Shannon’s depressor muscles in the lower face, which are responsible for the unintentional “sad face” appearance. “We just wanted to make her look more rested and happier,” said Dr. Fleming. “Nothing unnatural or too ‘frozen’ – people should never be able to tell you’ve had Botox; they should only notice that you look better.” On the same day as the Botox treatment,

Shannon also received three tubes of Juvederm filler. Her cheeks were plumped, her “marionette” lines that create the down-turned mouth were softened, her nasal-labial folds were decreased, and her lips were touched up just a little, since lips naturally deflate as we age. The most unusual treatment was the tiny bit of Juvederm that Dr. Fleming injected into each of Shannon’s earlobes to erase the lines that many women get as a result of aging or wearing earrings.

The Results

Dr. Fleming is very pleased with the results of Shannon’s makeover facial procedures. And Shannon? “I really think I look ten years younger!” exclaims Shannon. “I’m 48, but I feel like I’m in my thirties again!”

The Therapeutics of Colour

Colour therapy is a combination of two sciences: the utilization of light therapy and the stimulation of reflex zones. Together, these techniques support the body’s internal mechanisms, amplifying the healing process on various levels. Research has shown that cells not only radiate colour, but can also receive colour. Using reflex zones and acupuncture points as a point of entry for colour, the body’s mechanisms seem to respond to and develop with “colour energy.” The German physicist Dr. FritzAlbert Popp proved that the cells of all living beings emit “biophotons” (light quanta). The Anti-aging Effects of Colour Therapy

Vietnamese Grilled Prawns with Cucumber Noodles CREATED BY EXECUTIVE CHEF DANA REINHARDT 16 wild prawns, shelled and placed on a skewer 1 Fresco™ Seedless Cucumber 1 yellow Dolce™ Super Sweet Baby Bell Pepper, sliced 1 red Dolce™ Super Sweet Baby Bell Pepper, sliced ½ cup cilantro, chopped 4 green onions, chopped ½ cup unseasoned rice vinegar 2 Tbsp. canola oil 2 tsp. sesame oil 1 Tbsp. ginger, minced 1 small shallot, minced 1 clove garlic, minced 2 Tbsp. sweet chili sauce 2 tsp. kosher salt Instructions: 1. Peel cucumber and slice thinly lengthwise until you reach the middle. Turn and continue to cut slices from all four sides. Slice into thin strands and combine the cucumber with 2 Tbsp. of the rice vinegar and one tsp. of kosher salt. Allow the “cucumber noodles” to marinate for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat a BBQ or a grill pan to medium/high heat. 3. Squeeze “cucumber noodles” to remove excess liquid and combine with peppers, cilantro and green onions. Whisk together remaining rice vinegar, canola oil, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, shallots, sweet chilli sauce and salt. Pour over cucumber salad and mix well. 4. Grill skewered prawns until just cooked through (about 2 minutes per side). Portion salad between four plates and top with grilled prawns. Serve.

Norwegian Wild Salmon Gravlax

CREATED BY EXECUTIVE CHEF DANA REINHARDT 1 Tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. kosher salt 1 Tbsp. pink peppercorns, crushed 2 Tbsp. fresh dill, chopped 1 lb. fresh wild salmon, pin bones removed 2 Fresco™ Mini Cucumbers, thinly sliced ½ cup sour cream 1 shallot, minced 1 Tbsp. fresh dill, chopped 4 small pickles (cornichons), chopped 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice ½ tsp. kosher salt ½ baguette, thinly sliced and toasted Instructions 1. Combine sugar, kosher salt, dill and peppercorns in a small bowl. 2. Line a shallow baking dish with plastic wrap and leave a large flap overhanging both sides. Spread half of spice mixture on plastic wrap and place salmon on top. Sprinkle remaining mixture over salmon and wrap tightly with flaps of plastic. 3. Cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the baking dish and place cans on top to weigh down the gravlax. Cure salmon in fridge for 24 hours. 4. Remove salmon from baking dish and discard any liquid. Scrape spices off both sides of salmon. Slice with a very sharp knife into thin pieces. 5. Combine sour cream, shallot, pickles, dill, lemon juice and kosher salt in a bowl and mix well. 6. Place sliced Fresco™ mini cucumbers on toasted baguette slices. Top with dollop of cream mixture and finish with sliced gravlax. Serve.

plastic surgeon is a true cosmetic surgeon. He or she goes through an accredited training program, followed by a written examination that must be passed in order to become a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be certified to perform plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. The individual graduate is registered as a plastic surgeon doing reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. These surgeons have privileges within the local hospital where they perform their specialty. These surgeons can perform surgery outside the hospital environment, especially for improving the appearance of the body and trunk for esthetic purposes. They are also registered with the provincial college to perform such procedures in a private setting clinic. There are many other specialties; for example, general practice, general surgery or gynecology, who might call themselves cosmetic surgeons as well. Be aware that the term cosmetic surgeon seems to be used quite loosely where it encompasses esthetic correction, whether it be surgical correction or non-surgical. In today’s world, liposuction is performed by many different kinds of physicians and, therefore, it is very im-


portant for the individual consumer to review this by asking the right questions to make them comfortable that the services they are seeking are done by an appropriate person trained in that specialty. As you know, liposuction is performed mostly by plastic surgeons, who have been trained and qualified to do such procedures in their training and their practice. However, liposuction surgeries are also performed by ENT surgeons, obstetrician/gynecologists and GPs. Regarding breast surgery, such as breast augmentation, these procedures are mostly performed by plastic, reconstructive cosmetic surgeons. However, today, there are many other specialists performing such procedures as well. It is the duty of the consumer to review the practitioner appropriately and make the right decision as to whom they should choose to perform the procedure. Some plastic surgeons have elected to specialize in doing mostly cosmetic surgery, namely body contouring surgery, facelift and breast augmentation surgery, both surgical and non-surgical, and sub-specialize in that area. With the availability of the internet and media, there is a lot of advertising by cosmetic surgeons describing the facilities they have and the services they provide. It is imperative that consumers review all these issues before choosing a cosmetic surgeon for their surgical or non-surgical procedure. The following points will help you choose the right plastic surgeon.

Qualifications denote quality Physicians and clinics advertise on the internet, electronic media, newspapers, journals and magazines to promote their facilities. It is the duty of the consumer to review the curriculum vitae and the qualifications of that individual, surgeon or physician. Ask the following question: “Are you working in the hospital and if so, what services do you provide?” The answer should be: “I work in the hospital as a plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon and provide the appropriate services.” Review the CV of the individual surgeon or physician, and possibly ask your GP for recommendations. Services provided Does the surgeon provide surgical services as well as non-surgical services to the community? Surgical services could be related to facial rejuvenation, breast surgery, body contouring surgery, liposuction or other surgeries that require anesthetic and surgical correction. Non-surgical services are also provided by cosmetic surgeons to improve the outcomes with skincare products, injectables, fillers and neurotoxin. Hospital privileges Ask questions of the clinic or the secretary, or of the physician as to whether that surgeon or physician has privileges at the hospital and what type of privileges they are. They should have privileges in plastic, reconstructive and

cosmetic surgery if they are performing esthetic surgery. It would be prudent to ask if they are licenced to perform that same procedure in an outside-hospital surgical setting having the same procedures they have at the hospital. Experience During the consultation with the surgeon, it is worthwhile to ask about their number of years of experience and the types of procedures they have performed in the past. ow do we determine a woman’s age simply by looking at her? Easy: we take note of her skin. We see youth in tight, glowing, plump skin. Or, if her skin exhibits sagging, wrinkling and laxity, we can assess her age depending on the severity of these conditions. now. You need to get dressed today, so wear what works for you today – not five pounds lighter or two weeks of push ups later. 2. Categorize your clothes. Assign each item in your wardrobe into one of three distinct categories. First: love it, keep it, build more outfits around it. Second: alter it, fix it, do what needs to be done so you can love it and build outfits around it. Third: give it away. 3. Be ruthless. We all have clothes that don’t fit, but to which we have some kind of attachment. If you are not wearing it, let it go. Make an exception for one or two sentimental items, like your mom’s favourite cashmere sweater that you wear around the house when it’s cold. But if it’s a skirt you adored five years ago that has been too tight ever since, see rule number one and let it go.

I work with a wide range of women of different ages, backgrounds, body types and income levels. Each client is different, yet there are a few key guidelines that every woman can follow. Using the rules below, you can clean out your closet this fall and redefine your own amazing style.

Jessie’s Top Six Tips for Building a Fabulous Wardrobe that Works for You:

1. Embrace your body. First, and most important, accept and embrace your body as it is right

4. Foundation pieces create unity. Look at your wardrobe as a whole. Does it all work together? A lot of women I work with have a mishmash of pieces – great pieces, but nothing that works with everything else. Make sure you have the basics before you buy for trend. Do you have a pair of hot jeans, a great white blouse, a well cut blazer? When you have the foundation pieces you will be able to incorporate that blouse that you love, but don’t know how to wear. 5. Say goodbye. If a piece doesn’t work, fix it or let it go. When going through a client’s wardrobe, I will inevitably see a few of these. That beautiful dress that you bought on sale last year, but don’t really know how to wear, or that needs a camisole or more buttons before you can wear it... If the piece stresses you out because you

don’t have the right pants to go with it or it’s too sheer, you can do one of two things. First, let it go; there is no need to incur more stress in your life. Second, go buy the camisole – today. Not next week. Get what you need to make the piece work. 6. Make a list. Write a list of what’s missing. Be detailed: a brown belt for your “boyfriend jeans,” a necklace to wear with a black dress, a slip to wear with the gorgeous dress that you bought last year but have never worn because you don’t have the slip... The goal is to make sure everything in your wardrobe works together, and that you know how to wear it. Write a list of the holes. Do you have a cocktail dress? What about a clutch? Do you need to update your black pants? How are your belts? You will need a belt for jeans and a belt for pants, and you may even need a belt for a dress – one belt can’t do all things. With a list you will be able to do focused and effective shopping, rather than wasting time and money. By purchasing the few necessary pieces and getting rid of the ones that just don’t work, you can create a cohesive, flattering wardrobe that works for you. Another great tip is to write a list of three or four of your best outfits and stick it up on your wardrobe door so when you are late (always) you can throw on the outfit that you know works. If you’re not sure about something, ask an expert or someone whose taste you trust – and whom you know will answer you honestly. Have fun and good luck!

Freshen Up Your Skin! Fighting Pigmentation By Dr Henry Ngai

O

ne of the major problems with aging skin is the appearance of dark spots or pigmented lesions. The colour of the pigments comes from melanin, a compound that is produced in melanocytes. These are cells situated on the top layer of the skin. Of the many triggers for melanin production, ultraviolet light is the most common. When UV light hits the skin, melanin is produced to protect it against harmful irradiation. Other causes of melanin over-production are skin injury, friction or skin diseases such as acne and eczema resulting in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Aside from PIH, the pigmented lesions frequently encountered in our cosmetic practice include freckles (ephelides), sun spots (lentigines), age spots (seborrheic keratosis), moles (melanocytic nevi) and melasma. The latter typically occurs in women as it can be triggered by birth-control pills, menopause, pregnancy and genetic factors. Melasma appears as greyish or brownish discolouration on the face, usually on the cheeks and around the mouth. Before initiating a treatment plan for any pigmented lesion, an accurate diagnosis must be established. Lesions that look suspicious for malignancy should always be biopsied to confirm the diagnosis. Simply lasering off these lesions for cosmetics will only mask a possible disease, allowing it to progress to a more advanced stage before detection. The treatment modality depends on the diagnosis. For example, while the intense pulsed light (IPL) works well for freckles, it is less ideal for melasma. In other instances, a skilful professional may use the same technology but vary parameters to treat different types of lesions with success. Frequently, different types of pigmented lesions can co-exist, thus requiring multiple modalities and sessions to achieve the desired result. Another consideration is the skin type: the darker the patient’s skin, the more caution needed. There are a number of common methods of treating pigmented lesions, and some are

more successful than others. We’ll address each method individually below. Topical medication: Many cosmetic creams on the market are available to lighten up facial blemishes. Cosmetic physicians can also compound creams with various bleaching ingredients. This is sufficient treatment for some people. Electrosurgery and cryosurgery: These are destructive methods employing a radiofrequency probe or liquid nitrogen to remove superficial pigmented lesions like age spots. These methods are non-selective, which means they can also injure the normal skin surrounding the lesions. Therefore, other options should be considered if the cosmetic outcome is a primary concern. Electrosurgery and cryosurgery are also not suitable treatment of smaller lesions such as freckles. Chemical Peel: Chemical peeling or exfoliation is one way of treating superficial pigmentation such as freckles and PIH, especially if they are a result of acne. Melasma responds somewhat to chemical peels. This treatment is economical, portable and requires no expensive lasers. Typically, more than one treatment is needed. There is also some peeling after each treatment. Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion has the same effect as a light chemical peel. Inorganic crystal powder is used to polish the skin and to remove some superficial pigments. It also can stimulate collagen production in the dermis to some degree. Again, a series of treatment is needed and peeling is negligible. On its own, it is not effective in treating melasma. Laser: Laser is light with a specific wavelength that selectively targets the melanin. Common lasers used in treating pigmented lesions include the KTP, ruby, and alexandrite lasers. The laser light has a high affinity to melanosome, the organelle which contains the melanin. The scab formed at the treated area falls off in a week or so, leaving the skin with a clearer complexion. Most of the pigmented le-

sions mentioned earlier, including many cases of small moles, will respond to laser treatment in experienced hands. Intense pulsed light (IPL): IPL is a light source consisting of multiple wavelengths, thereby enabling it to treat different skin targets such as melanin and hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the molecule that imparts the red colour in blood. Instead of thick scabs which occur after laser treatment, “micro-crusts” form after IPL treatments. “Micro-crusts” can easily be covered by make-up, allowing the person to continue with normal social engagements. In general, more sessions of IPL are needed to remove a lesion than a laser. Fractional laser: Fractional laser is not a pigment-selective laser. Because the laser beam is broken (fractionated) into micro-columns of light, the skin can be treated with a much higher intensity and has fewer side effects and shorter recovery time. I have found this technology to be more effective in treating PIH and some resistant cases of melasma than other methods. Regardless of the treatment method of pigmentation in aging skin, to increase the chance of a successful outcome, it is absolutely crucial to be vigilant about sun protection, meaning sunscreen and sun avoidance. Conditions such as melasma and freckles recur readily with further sun exposure. A final note of caution is that overtreatment can itself lead to PIH and scarring.

The “Three Cs” Every Women Should Screen For By Dr Lydia Waterson, MB.ChB

W

e are more aware than ever before of breast cancer screening and prevention, but that doesn’t mean we are doing what we should to watch for early signs of this disease. Are you aware that there are three cancers all women should screen for regularly?

Breast Cancer

Have you had your regular breast exam recently? Women in their fifties through their seventies should have a screening mammogram done every two years. Women in their forties should have this done annually, as their breasts are denser. However, it is very important that every woman does monthly “shower breast exams” following a period, and annual breast exams with a family doctor. A shower breast exam is best done in the shower with wet, soapy hands, which makes it much easier to examine the breasts. In BC, we have a screening mammography program in place that offers screening to all women from age 40 to 79. Screening mammograms are the best way to detect the earliest signs of breast cancer. Do this as your birthday gift to yourself each year.

Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer screening is very important. Although it is a cancer of younger women, it

is the one cancer that can be picked up at the earliest stages with your regular PAP smear, and it is usually 100 percent treatable. Screening is started from age 21 or after having been sexually active for three years (whichever comes first) and continues up to age 69 when you graduate from this program! Your PAP smear needs to be an important part of your annual checkup and screening for disease with your family physician.

Colorectal Cancer

The next cancer that we should be aware of and need to be checked for is colorectal cancer, or CRC. Both men and women are at risk of developing CRC. The risk increases with age, particularly after the age of fifty. The average person has a one-in-18 lifetime risk for developing CRC. If CRC is detected at an early age before symptoms start, the cure rate is 80 percent – so early detection and intervention really does save lives! Colorectal cancer is often a silent disease with no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include blood in the stool and pain and changed bowel movements. Should you have any of these, you need to contact your doctor as soon as possible. You may be at an increased risk for CRC if you are over 50 years

of age, you have a family history of CRC, or you have had polyps. There are a number of tests performed here in BC, like the Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT), which looks for hidden blood in the stool. The newer Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) test is more sensitive; however, there is a small charge at the laboratory for it (approximately $23). And then there is the colonoscopy – the most accurate diagnostic investigation for CRC. A doctor can detect small polyps at an early stage and remove them for diagnosis and prevention. Almost all CRCs develop from these small polyps. Everyone should be checked for CRC starting at age 50. With regular screening, you can be sure to catch any problems at the earliest and most treatable stage. In the case of colorectal cancer, you can even reduce your risk of ever getting it. Every woman should screen for these three cancers on a regular basis to ensure your continued good health. Revamp Your Workout!

A Trainer’s Approach By Tanya Hunt, NSCA Certified Personal Trainer

A

s a personal trainer, I get constant emails with questions and concerns about individual training programs. All too often, the complaint is from people who have been training for months without seeing any progress and are ready to give up out of frustration. There is nothing worse than wasting your precious time and effort on a program that has overstayed its welcome and is now ineffective. I learned this lesson the hard way when I was a teen struggling with my weight. I paid a local trainer $40 to give me a starter workout program. I did this program exactly as he wrote it for 18 months! I was proud of my dedication, but totally discouraged because I didn’t see results after the first few months. I thought maybe the program was wrong for my body, or I was doing it wrong... when in actual fact there was nothing wrong with the program or my technique. My body had adapted to the workout and anything after the first 60 days was a complete waste of time. After a decade of reading, experience and trying different things, I have learned that it really isn’t that complicated. You need to decide what you want to do, and change things often within the rules of getting your desired result. Below are five guidelines I suggest following while revamping your exercise program.

1. DEFINE YOUR GOAL

The first thing you need to do is set a specific goal pertaining to your fitness level. A goal to “lose weight” is not enough detail. “I would like to lose 8 pounds of body fat and define the muscle in my shoulders and legs in 45 days” is a measurable goal. Many women are afraid of training for hypertrophy (muscle gain), but I can assure you that in most cases it is what will give you the desired result. Adding muscle to your frame will increase your metabolism and enable you to burn more calories at rest, while shaping and toning your body. Doing hours of cardio alone is not the answer. If you are a pear shape and you start an extensive cardio program without weight training, you will only end up a smaller, softer pear when you reach your weight goal. To take control of your body shape, you have to build and sculpt with lean muscle.

2. KNOW YOUR WORKOUT GUIDELINES

Do you want to train for muscle strength, muscle endurance, or hypertrophy (muscle tone)? Depending on your goal, follow the suggestions in table 1 on page 33 to meet it.

4. CARDIO AND FAT BURNING

My favorite form of cardio is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and is something that you can do with no equipment at all. I personally do this type of workout three times a week in the morning in addition to my strength training. For beginners, do each exercise for 20 seconds, with 20 seconds rest between exercises. For intermediate and advanced levels, work out 20 seconds on, with 10 seconds rest between exercises. Table 2 on page 33 is a sample advanced program.

5. REST

Allow at least one but not more than three days between the same muscle group training. Beginners should do two to three sessions per week; intermediate level should be three to four sessions per week; advanced workouts are more than four times per week.

6. YOUR NEW PROGRAM

So what do these guidelines make your new workout program look like? Here are some helpful pointers: Beginner: One exercise per muscle group with sets and reps based on table 1. To allow for sufficient recovery, the beginner would have two to three workouts evenly spaced throughout the week (i.e., Monday and Thursday; or Monday, Wednesday, Friday.) Intermediate: Two exercises per muscle group with different exercises per muscle group throughout the week. Intermediate-level work outs can tolerate more than three sessions per week so would need to train more than one day in a row (i.e., upper body exercises on Monday and Thursday; lower body exercises on Tuesday and Thursday). Advanced: An advanced program could be a split routine of two days on and one day rest. An example would be: Monday, upper body “PULL” exercises like upper back, traps, biceps; Tuesday, lower body exercises; Wednesday, upper body “PUSH” exercises like chest, shoulders, triceps; Thursday, rest. Use these guidelines to revamp your program to keep your ultimate goal on track. Cocktail party and little black dress season is fast approaching, ladies! How do you want to look and feel? 3. EXERCISES

Deciding which exercises to incorporate will be dependent on time and the equipment you have available, as well as your goal and experience. A general rule I have is to incorporate core exercises that are multi-joint and work one large muscle group and more than one smaller muscle group (i.e., bench press or squat). This saves time and also burns a greater amount of calories. Do these at the beginning of your workout and do the assistance or single-joint exercises at the end of your work out (i.e., bicep curls).
