hen was the last time you hung out with a 20-year-old? For those with daughters, friends or acquaintances of this age, you know that these young women are like spring. Their faces, their skin, their bodies are exquisite – though of course they don’t know it. Their life experiences are teaching them a great deal. That tender time of spring-like emergence into womanhood is a beautiful thing. However, how many of you would want to be 20 again? Probably very few. Sure, our skin takes a beating from the stress and environmental impact of the years. Those lines on our faces, however, are the legacy of our lives. We might dislike them, and we may wish to fill, flatten and plump those wrinkles – and this issue of Fresh is full of tips to help you do just that. But the point is: we are not trying to look 20 again. We are trying to look and feel our best at 35, 45, 55 and 65, in a way that represents where we are in our lives at this exact moment. Every woman has her own story, and every story is filled with laughter, sorrow and love. Each of these intensely personal experiences, the highs and the lows, has left its mark. Why would we want to erase these memories completely? At Fresh, our mission is to help women embrace their unique beauty and all the summers, autumns and winters of their lives. Fresh is sponsoring a number of events in and around Vancouver in the coming months. Be sure to check out the information in this issue on these great events: Platform for Plus Size at the Vancity Theatre on March 2, presenting health, wellness and lifestyle topics to the plus-size community; Glow Vancouver at the Sheraton Wall Centre on March 9, bringing together women from all walks of life who are seeking positive change; Spring Cleaning for Your Body, Mind and Soul at the River Market New Westminster on April 3; and Novus Nights at the Vancouver Club on May 4, with proceeds benefiting the Zajac Ranch for Children for kids with chronic, life-threatening or debilitating conditions. We hope to see you at some of these amazing events! Shelly Lynn Nellis Editor-In-Chief shelly@freshvancouver.com

s we prepare to launch our bodies, minds and attitudes into spring, we tend to think about the usual seasonal things: renewal, skincare, sun protection, our spring wardrobes. There are some great tips and breakthroughs revealed on these subjects in this issue of Fresh. But let’s not forget about our health, especially with the sun beckoning us outside after the gloom of chilly winter. As Tamara Taggart reflects in this month’s feature interview, our diet and exercise regimen is the one aspect of our overall health that we can control, and it is the most important thing. With three young children and a loving husband at home, a job she loves as CTV News at Six anchor, a busy schedule and full life, Tamara was blindsided last year by a medical crisis that nearly killed her. After months of feeling utterly exhausted, culminating in days of fainting and vomiting, Tamara and those around her were shocked to learn that a ten-centimetre tumour had to be removed from her small intestine. It was a rare kind of cancer, one that became treatable only in recent years. Tamara’s bad fortune was offset by some lucky breaks: a tumor caught in the nick of time before it spread and became inoperable, a successful surgery, a new medication that works. As she spoke with Fresh, Tamara reflected on her gratitude and her new perspective on what’s important in life: family, health, and making a difference in the world. A happy, healthy spring to all our readers!

Enriching Lives, One Smile at a Time By Dr Kelvin Mah
A
s sophisticated, elaborate and technologically advanced as modern dentistry has become, there’s one thing that, for me, will never change: my vision of enriching lives, one smile at a time. That’s what inspired me, more than two decades ago, to turn away from a promising career in microbiology and pursue dentistry. With all due respect to the invaluable scientists among us who make our lives safer, smarter and better, I simply had to connect with people, rather than work with things. What’s more, I recognized that a career in dentistry would allow me the perfect opportunity to enhance my future patients’ lives in profound ways and on every level: mind, body and spirit.
“I don’t treat teeth, and never have. I treat people, and always will.” I appreciate that some readers may be somewhat surprised by my choice of words. Were I a life coach, holistic health professional, therapist or motivational speaker, nobody would bat an eyelid. But a dentist talking about “mind, body and spirit”? Surely something must be out of place! After all, aren’t we the people who walk around in starchy white lab coats (for no apparent reason)? And aren’t we the folks who prefer to look at your file – instead of you – during your appointment? And above all, don’t we limit our interests to your teeth – and nothing else? I can’t speak for other dentists, but for me, the answers to all of those questions – especially the last one about focusing only on teeth – are an immediate and resounding no. I don’t treat teeth, and never have. I treat people, and always will. I embrace the privilege – and the responsibility – of providing each unique patient with a profoundly personal and potentially life-changing experience that they wouldn’t necessarily associate with dentistry. Yes, you read that correctly: I said life-changing. Because, just as I don’t treat teeth, I don’t solve dental problems, either. That’s not the paradigm through which I view my work. Instead, I see myself as a guide who introduces my patients to the better life that awaits them on the “other side” of their Smile City Square Dental encounter. That better life

is one full of confidence, self-esteem and inner happiness. For so many of my patients, it’s also a life marked by improved career success, a more rewarding social life, and more fulfilling interpersonal relationships. In fact, some of my patients have found their “soulmate” thanks in large part to their new, brilliant smile! I understand that some readers, particularly those who haven’t read my Smile Story articles here in Fresh Vancouver, may find all of this a bit unusual. It’s not how dentists typically communicate. But as my patients will surely agree, there’s nothing typical about what I do, or even where I work. I painstakingly designed my Smile City Square Dental practice, with its majestic 40-foot ceilings and sublime spa-like esthetics, to express themes that most people would never associate with a typical dentist’s office: warmth, comfort, inspiration, and organic, contemporary design. Nor is there anything typical about how I spend as much time as is necessary conversing with each new patient who walks into my practice, so that I can learn about who they are, what inspires them, and where they’d like to be in the future. We don’t talk about teeth. We talk about them. There’s certainly nothing typical in my belief that collaboration – not diagnosis – is the only way to serve my patients’ needs across the full spectrum of who they are: mind, body and spirit. That is, I don’t impose treatments. I listen, ask questions, and together with my patients, co-create a solution that is the ideal fit for who they are and where they want to be tomorrow. Some may call my approach “patient-centric.” While I’d agree with that, there’s another word I prefer to use: authentic. That’s truly who I am at my core. That’s what defines my remarkable Smile City Square Dental team. That’s what my patients can expect, from the moment they walk into my practice. That’s the legacy that I aspire to leave behind when I retire, and watch my 4-year old son spread his wings (he’s already a lot smarter than me in some ways, unlike my wife, who is a lot smarter than me in every way!). It’s the guiding vision that makes it possible for me to fulfill my mission, which is to enrich lives, one smile at a time.

reast health is an important concern for women of all ages. Today, every woman knows someone affected by breast disease or breast cancer, or has experienced it herself. Breast health is highly individualized and there are many simple things you can do to keep your breasts healthy throughout your lifetime.
Know Your Risks
There is no one single cause of breast cancer. Determining your risk and understanding what increases it, especially if you are a woman over 50, is the first step in designing a screening and prevention plan. Risk factors for breast cancer include:
• A personal or family history of cancer, particularly breast, ovarian or prostate • A history of breast disease or dense breast tissue • Obesity or weight problems • Lack of breastfeeding • Radiation exposure to the chest Genetic mutations in the breast cancer gene are also cancer-causing. These are caused by: • Above average exposure to sources of estrogen • Onset of menses (first period) earlier than 12 years old • Estrogen use (birth control pill) for longer than four years • Having never given birth or giving birth for the first time after 30 • Hormone replacement therapy use for more than three years • Reaching menopause after 55 years of age Statistically, only 30 percent of cancers can be linked directly to genes, estrogen exposure and family history. While there are some risk factors that you can’t control, there are many health and lifestyle factors that contribute to breast health and are modifiable, including: • Diet, smoking and alcohol consumption • Exposure to the birth control pill • Exposure to harmful chemicals and xenoestrogens
Talk to Your Doctor about Your Risk
The first conversation you should have with your doctor is about your risk factors and how to determine them. Some methods include blood and urine testing, genetic risk assessment, ultrasound, screening mammography and thermography, and clinical breast exams. Because cancer does not develop overnight, there is opportunity to identify and modify your personal risk factors. No one single method of testing can diagnose breast cancer, but when used in the appropriate manner, all can be useful methods for early detection and screening.
Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines
New recommendations for breast cancer screening have raised questions for women everywhere. It is important to understand the benefits and limitations of all breast-screening methods including ultrasound, thermography, mammograms and diagnostic MRI, so you can make an informed choice that is right for you. Screening methods allow us to test for cancer at its earliest stages, often before obvious symptoms develop. There is no perfect screening method that can detect cancer with 100 percent accuracy and some

detect heat and vascular changes in breast tissue. The heat changes are indicative of changes in metabolism associated with precancerous changes. Thermography uses no radiation and can be used in conjunction with mammography for early screening and to monitor breast health over time. Thermography is a functional imaging technique that detects physiological changes. It cannot pinpoint the location of cancers, as can mammograms and diagnostic MRIs.
Know Your Breasts
Having healthy breasts starts with getting to know them. No matter what age you are, it is important to be aware of what your breasts look and feel like and what is normal for you. If you don’t do self-breast exams, ask your doctor how, or visit breastcancer.org to learn. Be sure to take an active part in your breast health and report any changes that are suspicious to your doctor.
methods can show cancers where there are not, and miss cancers where there are. Regardless, screening is a valuable part of every woman’s health care regimen and can save lives when used appropriately. While all these methods are useful in screening and detection, none are diagnostic. Mammography: Mammography is an examination of the breasts using a low-dose x-ray that passes through breast tissue to produce a detailed image. This detailed image, taken from several angles, helps to determine the exact location of suspicious areas of breast tissue. Mammograms can most often detect cancers earlier than clinical breast exams. Thermography: Thermography testing uses a thermal sensor to

You can’t change some of your risk factors for breast cancer, such as your family history or when you started your period. You may be able to change some factors like your diet, estrogen exposure, toxic and chemical exposure, and achieving a healthy weight. Young
with the Advanced BBL Photo-Firming Treatment By Amanda Beisel
“When I turned 30, I started to notice my skin wasn’t as vibrant as when I was in my 20s. I decided it was time to amp up my skincare program. After just one BBL PhotoFirming Treatment and a new daily skincare program, I am looking vibrant once again.” - Andrea W. “After just two BBL Photo-Firming Treatments for my face and neck, my skin is so much brighter and tighter and I keep receiving so many compliments on my skin. I am so excited to have discovered this treatment!” - Evelyn N. “My main skin concern was sun damage and loss of elasticity. I just finished my third session and my sun spots are almost completely gone and my skin has such a nice glow. My husband even noticed my skin looked firmer on my face and neck. “ - Rochelle D.
A
s children, our skin is bright and firm, with an even skin tone and a natural vibrancy. When we age, our skin begins to gradually lose these youthful, healthy features due to natural skin aging, environmental factors and of course the lifestyle we choose to live. As the skin ages and we start to see visible changes, we then begin our search for treatments and products to help bring back our youthful skin appearance. Often these solutions do not meet our expectations and after spending hundreds, even thousands, of dollars, we are left feeling hopeless. If only there was a treatment that could effectively brighten and firm the skin and even skin tone, all while improving the health of the skin. Well, now there is – and this new treatment not only meets all of the above requirements, but it has virtually no downtime, is very tolerable, and is affordable.
Introducing the BBL PhotoFirming Treatment
The BBL Photo-Firming Treatment is an advanced treatment that combines a BBL Photo Rejuvenation Treatment with a BBL Skin Tyte Treatment. Exciting new research has revealed that having as little as two BBL Photo-Firming Treatments a year can actually reverse the signs of aging, not only on the face but also the neck, chest, hands, arms and other body parts. All these areas are common body parts to develop redness, pigmentation damage, loss of elasticity and firmness, and dull-looking skin. The BBL Photo-Firming Treatment is the most advanced technique available to us today to noninvasively slow down, treat and reverse damage and aging of facial and non-facial skin.
More Exciting Evidence
Evidence is beginning to show that aged skin cells begin to act more like younger skin cells after regular BBL Photo-Firming Treatments. These younger skin cells produce more collagen and elastin than aged skin cells (Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr. unpublished study). A blind panel of physician evaluators determined BBL treated patients appeared nine years younger than their actual age. This is because clients who undergo regular BBL Photo-Firming Treatments can reduce and delay the long-term signs of skin aging, all while looking very natural.
Who Is a Good Candidate ?
The BBL Photo-Firming Treatment benefits a multitude of skin concerns. Aside from addressing visible skin concerns, it can slow down the rate at which the skin ages and prevent visible signs of aging from appearing. It is a great preventative and corrective treatment option. Some of the skin concerns this treatment will target: • sun damage • loss of elasticity • sun spots/pigmentation • rosacea/flushing • fine lines • wrinkles • crow’s feet • large pores • dull-looking skin
There is no other treatment in existence today that can target as many skin concerns in one session as the BBL Photo-Firming Treatment. Having just two treatments a year can transform the look, health and function of your skin, slowing the rate at which you age. Investing in a series of BBL Photo-Firming Treatments can potentially save you thousands of dollars in your search to achieve and maintain youthful skin. Adopting a skincare regimen that includes BBL Photo-Firming treatments alongside an effective daily skincare program will bring real, visible, long-term results. Don’t waste your money on gimmicky products and treatments. Commit to clinically proven BBL Photo-Firming Treatments and your skin will be healthier, brighter, firmer and more youthful than ever before.

How Does It Work?
The light from the BBL Photo Rejuvenation treatment denatures damaged cells in the skin, stimulating our body’s natural healing process. By selecting the appropriate wavelength, we are able to treat a broad range of skin conditions caused by skin aging and sun exposure. This treatment stimulates the skin cells to generate new collagen, thickening your skin and giving you youthful, rejuvenated, healthy skin. This process helps restore the skin to its natural stage. The BBL Photo Rejuvenation treatment targets and eliminates many of the fine vessels that cause redness and the unwanted sunspots and pigmentation. The BBL Photo-Firming Treatment is completed with a BBL Skin Tyte session, which uses infrared heat to stimulate and contract collagen, resulting in firmer skin. The targeted heating causes soft tissue coagulation that tightens tissue as it heals, stimulating collagen contraction and remodeling. This process initiates the body’s natural healing process and a new foundation of collagen is created, resulting in firmer, more youthful skin. The full effect of skin firming can be seen over several subsequent months.

The hCG Diet
Demystified By Dr Lydia Waterson MD
T
he hCG diet offers safe and rapid weight loss for healthy individuals who want to lose 20 pounds or more using a combination of a VLCD (very low calorie diet) and hCG injections. This helps to reset your metabolism to maintain long-term Dr Lydia Waterson MD weight loss. After the weight loss, the metabolic impact is the most remarkable aspect of this diet. The history of the hCG Diet begins with Dr ATW Simeons, the author, researcher and scientist who developed the hCG diet over 50 years ago. His research covered 40 years of grappling with the fundamental problem of being overweight. Throughout those years, he investigated every new theory, method and promising lead. He experimentally screened and critically evaluated each aspect of them. He then developed the hCG diet to aid clinically obese patients in quickly returning to a safer weight zone to reduce dangerous health-related conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. His results have been documented and heralded in medical journals around the world. Dr Simeons recorded his findings in his book Pounds and Inches. If you can get past the medical jargon, the book provides a thorough understanding of how the diet came to be and the research that went into it. His first report
on hCG was published by The Lancet in 1954 (a copy is available on our website www.thecoliseum.ca).
sult is that the released fat will be used to make up for the caloric deficit of the diet.
Correcting the Disorder
A 1973 clinical trial published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by WL Asher, MD and Harold W Harper, MD demonstrates the benefits of using hCG in conjunction with a calorie-restricted diet. Twenty female patients on 500 to 550 kcal diets receiving daily injections of 125 iu of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) were compared with 20 female patients on 500 to 550 kcal diets receiving placebo injections. The hCG group lost significantly more mean weight and the percentage of affirmative daily patient responses indicating “little or no hunger” and “feeling good to excellent” was increased in the hCG treated group. It was also found in another study that the hCG group coped more efficiently with daily irritating situations, were in a better mood and handled conflict better than those on the diet without hCG. It seems that the benefits of adding hCG to a VLCD far outweigh those of a diet with only calorie restriction in every aspect. If your BMI is over 25, the hCG diet just might be for you.
Dr Simeons found that in most cases of weight loss brought about by traditional dieting, the loss is only temporary and is rapidly regained as soon as the reducing regimen is relaxed or eliminated. His conclusion is simple: “none of these measures [or methods] corrects the basic disorder.” Through the hCG diet the “basic disorder” is addressed, targeted and finally controlled. It is a fat-loss regimen that corrects and resets the metabolism. Dr Simeons found that while using hCG, only abnormal fat was being released for energy while the good, structural fat was conserved. It was consistently found that regardless of how overweight the patient, the weight is lost from the greatest circumference, whether it be the abdomen or the hips, and is consistently lost at a rate of 1cm per 1 kg of weight lost.
What Is hCG?
The abbreviation hCG stands for “human Chorionic Gonadotropin.” It is a hormone produced during a woman’s pregnancy. It is believed that hCG can provide pregnant women with extra immunity during pregnancy and can actually help the body burn more fat. During pregnancy, reserved fat is used for growing the fetus under the influence of hCG. That is why the growing fetus will continue to thrive even during the severest of morning sickness. When used in a calorie-restricted diet, the re-

Julie Brown Q: I feel great when I leave the house in the morning, but a few hours later, when I look in the mirror, my makeup seems to have practically disappeared! How can I ensure my makeup lasts all day (and all night) long? A: Does your eye makeup crease and your foundation fade, and you
find yourself having to touch up your makeup far too often during the day? Makeup products that last the longest are the formulas that are “long wearing” or “waterproof.” To start, top your moisturizer with a primer that will help your foundation go the distance. The best waterproofing primer is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. Use a long-wearing liquid foundation such as MAC Pro Long Wear Foundation, or a powder mineral foundation such as Bare Minerals Ready Foundation. If you are using a liquid foundation, always set it with a finishing powder, or a little of the powder mineral foundation. An important tip that helps your makeup look flawless is to always use a concealer under the eyes. This brightens the whole eye area and makes you look more awake and youthful. The key is finding one that doesn’t budge. I’ve tried many, and my favourite is Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Flawless Wear Concealer. Eye makeup tends to be what fades the most, so an eye primer is a must-have. Not only will it stop the creasing; it helps increase the vibrancy of the eye shadow applied on top of it. Two of the best eye primers are Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer and Bare Minerals Prime Time Eyelid Primer. Lipsticks now come in long-wearing formulas that do not dry out your lips as they did in years past. Try Make Up Forever Aqua Rouge Waterproof Lip Color and Make Up Forever Aqua Lip pencils. Spend less time touching up your makeup, and more time looking fresh and fabulous all day long! Amanda Beisel Q: My skin looks tired and dull since turning 40. I have heard about cosmetic acupuncture and was wondering if it is a good option for my skin concerns. My friend also said it is covered by extended benefits – is that true? A: Cosmetic acupuncture is a great solution for tired and dull looking skin. It breathes life back into the skin by increasing both the blood and oxygen flow up to the face. Often, after just one session, clients see the vibrancy returning to their skin. Because it is a holistic approach to beauty, aside from approving of the appearance of your skin, you will feel better physically, too. It decreases stress levels and boosts energy. It is covered by your extended benefits if you have acupuncture coverage. It is a traditional acupuncture treatment to balance the body while improving the look and health of the skin.

Simple Procedures Nobody Will Notice By Elisa Kosonen
S
ome things are better left to the imagination. While it’s practically an obligation to gush about that amazing sale when someone asks about your shoes, a little mystery goes a long way when it comes to cosmetic enhancements. More and more, women are looking for treatments that are subtle enough to go completely unnoticed—aside from the compliments, of course! Lucky for us, the evolution of skincare technology has resulted in a growing number of options. The latest breakthroughs and innovations are focused on fast and easy procedures that offer natural-looking results with little or no downtime. A few non-invasive tweaks can have a significant impact on your overall appearance. It might be hard to believe, but in as little as 20 minutes, you can look more refreshed, rested and positive. The key is to address three key factors: texture, tone and volume.
of Continuing Medical Education in the Department of Dermatology & Skin Science at the University of British Columbia. Ulthera, or ultherapy, uses ultrasound technology to target the connective tissue for increased collagen production, thereby tightening and firming the skin from within. Thermage uses radio frequency to stimulate collagen and recent advancements in the technology have proven it to be safer for the delicate eye area. By combining the two, all areas of concern on the face and neck can be addressed. No downtime is required and the results are significant, but gradual. “The nice thing about this treatment is the results are not immediate, so they come naturally, over time,” Dr. Humphrey adds. “For west coasters, that’s appealing.” Each 45-60 minute treatment will offer an instant overall tightening and lifting of the skin, but optimal results will be seen with monthly treatments after three to six months.
Restore Youthful Volume
Improve Skin Texture
Laser treatments have become one of the most popular and effective solutions to dull skin, fine lines and surface sun damage. Fractional lasers, or Fraxel technology, gently resurface the epidermis for smoother, softer skin while stimulating collagen in the dermis to support the skin’s natural rejuvenation process. Clear + Brilliant is the next generation of fractional technology and offers immediate results without discomfort or irritation. “I call it baby Fraxel,” says Dr. Frances Jang, lead dermatologist at Skinworks in Vancouver. “It’s meant to be an introductory level laser and is virtually pain-free. It just feels a little bit spicy.” Sessions take 10 to 20 minutes and are followed by an application of a topical treatment such as Vitamin C to help reduce any redness and accelerate collagen production. Clear + Brilliant visibly minimizes pores, smoothes the skin and fades pigmentation for a brighter, more youthful complexion. Plus, a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles has been reported after just one treatment.
Tighten Sagging Skin
“For people looking to address a bit of skin laxity or excess skin, we’re pairing Ulthera with Thermage,” says Dr. Shannon Humphrey, Director

Skin injectables have long been the answer to instantly and dramatically reduce deep wrinkles and fine lines, but they’re also effective solutions for reversing the volume deficit that occurs with age. Increasingly, the focus of soft tissue fillers is on the mid-face in order to recover your skin’s youthful plumpness. A rested and refreshed look can be achieved simply by adding volume and width around the cheeks. For subtle results, Dr. Bob Morrell, director of the Medical Rejuvenation Centre in Vancouver, recommends using fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm for a soft lift of the cheeks and eyebrows. “Those two things take about 15 or 20 minutes and they’re very effective in taking away that tired, sagging look,” Dr. Morrell explains. The effect is immediate, appears natural and can last up to a year since there is less muscle movement in the area to potentially metabolize the filler. As with any injectables, do your homework when choosing a clinic. Traditional needles can often shear soft tissue, so to minimize pain and visible bruising, look for a skilled physician who uses a cannula instead. Depending on your age and skin type, you may benefit from one of these procedures or a combination of all three. Before embarking on your own secret quest for skin rejuvenation, be sure to have your concerns addressed during a thorough consultation with an expert cosmetic physician. They can advise on the aspects that would make the most difference in your individual appearance. Sneak away on your lunch hour to discover a glowing complexion and younger-looking skin. The best part? The only thing people will notice is how fantastic you look.

Christine Barrie Q: What is “BodyTalk” and how does it relate to skincare?
Q: What exactly is in dermal fillers? Are they safe?
A: BodyTalk is a simple and effective holistic therapy that improves
A: Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, optimize facial proportions and recreate lost volume that results from aging. Fillers have come a long way since the days of collagen and silicone injections. Modern fillers are made primarily from hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance that naturally exists in our bodies. Popular fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma and Perlane are in the HA family of fillers. Other fillers are semi-permanent, such as calcium hydroxyapatite, better known as Radiesse, and poly-L-lactic acid, known as Sculptra. These reduce the appearance of wrinkles by stimulating the body’s own collagen production. However, HAs are by far the most commonly injected dermal fillers for facial rejuvenation. HA dermal filler injections provide an easy way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance by boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid. For those who are hesitant to inject chemicals into their body, note that the soft, injectable gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long-lasting, but not permanent. The result of a single HA treatment is seen instantly and can last for six to nine months. HAs are very safe and are easily reversible with an injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase, should you wish to dissolve what has been injected. Most fillers even have an anesthetic mixed into the product to minimize the discomfort of injection. Done artfully, dermal filler injections restore the contours of youth without affecting facial expression.

Is Permanent Fat Loss Possible
without Surgery? By Sarah Hughes
“Dear Fat Cells: UltraShape and I will find you, and we will destroy you. Sincerely, me” reads the brochure cover for this non-invasive body contouring technique. Tantalizing inner pages include taglines such as “Dear Skinny Jeans, Welcome back!” As much as we all love the concept of fat loss and body contouring without the scalpel, we’ve lost our wide-eyed innocence by now and have learned to treat each new technique with growing skepticism. But wait, this one is different – so they all say. But could this really be the one? A non-surgical, fast-acting, painless procedure with no down time... that actually works? Well, UltraShape does boast a few key attributes that make it stand out from the rest. We’ll get to those in a minute. First, let’s tackle the concept of noninvasive body shaping procedures.
Why Contour?
Women are harder on themselves than ever before when it comes to body image. In a recent survey of 1,000 Canadian women, a whopping 90 percent said they would like to change something about their bodies. Whether it’s mediadriven or self-inflicted criticism, suffice it to say that too many women just don’t feel good about the way they look. That has a significant impact on their quality of life. Study after study shows the inextricable link between feeling good about oneself and feeling happy and fulfilled in life. Part of the frustration is a lack of control over the “problem areas” women tend to fret over. Despite a healthy diet and adequate ex-
ercise, the areas of fat loss in the body cannot be controlled. The vast majority of Canadian women surveyed were unhappy with the fat deposits around their midsections, including “muffin top,” “spare tire,” “love handles” and “bra fat.” Secondary areas of negative focus included “saddle bags” and thighs. However much time we spend on the treadmill, we may never see much improvement in these areas. The attractiveness of non-invasive body contouring is that it gets around the major commitment of surgery. The pain, expense, downtime and risk of surgery are a barrier to a great many women, who may prefer a gentler and less aggressive option to help them feel better about the way they look. If, that is, it works.
Why UltraShape?
The human body maintains more or less the exact same number of fat cells throughout life; it is simply the size of the fat cell that changes. Amazingly, fat cells, unlike any other cells, seem capable of almost unlimited growth. Enter UltraShape. While many body contouring devices use low-level laser technology to promote leakage of fat from fat cells, UltraShape takes a different approach. Instead of lasers, it uses ultrasound technology, and instead of promoting leakage from cells, it destroys them altogether. The body is able to naturally metabolise the destroyed cell’s contents and debris from the broken cell walls. UltraShape has the largest number of peerreviewed papers published of any non-invasive device. The focused ultrasound treatment

does not generate much heat, which means treatments are comfortable for patients. The acoustic sound energy used to mechanically break down fat cell walls is safe and effective. Perhaps the best part is that these cells are permanently destroyed – which means that fat loss is permanent. “UltraShape is one of only a few nonsurgical technologies to permanently rid the body of fat,” says Dr Mathew Mosher, owner of YES Med Spa and Cosmetic Surgery Centre in Langley, BC. “With laser devices, the only one that permanently destroys fat cells is laserassisted liposuction – which is surgery. I have trialled other non-invasive contouring devices and UltraShape offers the best opportunity for more significant reduction with a permanent solution.” “UltraShape is also a tremendous complement to surgical procedures used in my own practice,” continues Dr Mosher. “Pockets of fat can be treated while avoiding the complexity of liposuction. Many patients want both: larger areas can be treated with liposuction, and smaller areas can be treated non-surgically with UltraShape.” We can’t change the genetic constitution of our bodies. Most of us don’t have the time to spend three hours a day at the gym. With UltraShape, we are given another option, and a modicum of control over our own bodies. The best results are seen in healthy patients who are near their ideal weight, but have problem areas they find frustrating. Perhaps now, these areas finally can be dealt with – permanently.

T
amara Taggart is a woman with a story – a few stories, in fact. Most of us know her as a long-time darling of CTV News, where she spent nine years as weather person earning accolades like “Best Local TV Personality,” “Woman of the Year” and one of “BC’s Ten Most Beautiful People” before being promoted to anchor of CTV News at Six. It was a significant jump from weather to anchor, and the decision was one that not everyone around
Beckett was born, I knew the minute I saw him that he had Down syndrome. We did a blood test and had to wait a few days to find out for sure. My husband is half Japanese, so we weren’t sure about the fold in his eyes, and we kept examining the crease in his palm, searching for details. We were sent for an echocardiogram on his heart, because 50 percent of babies born with Down syndrome have a heart defect. It was so tense in that examining room. His
“We are the leaders of this team and everyone will fall in line behind us. They will look to us to see how to act. If we act devastated and scared, that’s how they will act.” town (and certainly not on the internet) agreed with. Some might be aware that Tamara is married to rock ‘n’ roller Dave Genn of 54-40 and Matthew Good Band fame. Many have followed the story of Tamara’s first-born son, Beckett, who has Down syndrome, and whose smiling face beams in every exquisite photo on Tamara’s beautiful “mommy blog.” Only recently has Tamara begun to publicly discuss the traumatic health scare that made her fear for her life. Fresh Vancouver sat down with Tamara to celebrate her return to good health and discuss the many facets of this accomplished woman’s eventful life.
Three Kids in Three Years
“We didn’t know that Beckett had Down syndrome until five days after he was born. After we found out and got over the shock of it, the thought of leaving him alone in the world terrified me. I wanted to have another baby so he would have a sibling as quickly as possible. When Beckett was five months old, I got pregnant with Zoë. In hindsight it was overwhelming, but at the time it seemed like the right thing to do – and it was, but it was a lot harder on my body that I thought it would be. When Zoë was born, I was so happy that Beckett would have somebody in the world, but then I worried that Zoë would have a huge responsibility as a sister. Again, I wanted to have another baby as soon as possible. We waited a little longer so my body could heal, and then we got pregnant with Poppy. We would have kept going if I hadn’t run into health issues last year. If I had started earlier, I probably would have had ten by now! I always wanted a large family.”
Discovering Down Syndrome
“I had gone through the screening and supposedly had a one in 900 chance of having a baby with Down syndrome. I was told I could cross it off my list of things to worry about. When
heart was fine, thank goodness, and we thought maybe he doesn’t have Down syndrome. Then, later that day, our pediatrician phoned us to confirm that Beckett had Trisomy 21. It levelled us. My husband and I were crying. We didn’t know what any of it meant; we were in a state of fear. We also had a house full of people, so we collected ourselves and said, we are the leaders of this team and everyone will fall in line behind us. They will look to us to see how to act. If we act devastated and scared, that’s how they will act. We went downstairs and told our friends and family the facts, and said we are going to find out more information, and he’s our boy and we love him. I don’t think we cried again after that day.”
months later, I heard they had broken up, and I happily remembered him. He came to a party he knew I was going to be at, walked straight in and asked me out. We went on our first date, and that was that! Seven years of marriage and three kids later, we still don’t always agree on each other’s choice in music... but luckily our kids love it all!”
From Weather to Anchor
“After doing weather for more than nine years, the transition to CTV News at Six anchor was my biggest career challenge to date. It was incredibly exciting – but terrifying. I had been on that anchor desk for almost ten years, so it was a comfortable place for me to be, but the responsibility was new. It didn’t take me long to find my groove. There were nay-sayers – there still are – but the people who were most outspoken were people I don’t know, people who would never say it to my face. We live in a time in which people can say whatever they want on the internet and not be accountable. I don’t read what is said about me online. I just think you should own what you say.”
Two Years of CTV News at Six
“Every day is different. I have been able to say that about all my 15 years at CTV. Much of it is unpredictable and it keeps you on your toes. I love live television. I am impatient and don’t like to do things more than once. If there are
Just Beckett
“We don’t think about Down syndrome every day. His sisters have no idea he even has it. To them, he’s just Beckett. Yes, Beckett has speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, and he has support in his kindergarten class, and that’s just how we live our life. Beckett has taught us patience and to celebrate the small victories. We don’t send in the cheering squad Dress/BCBG Max Azria/$143 when Zoë and Poppy eat a bowl of Cheerios, but we do when Beckett does. He is now putting three words together, and that’s cause for celebration, for all of us. The girls may not know why we’re celebrating, but they’re happy to celebrate, too!”
Life with a Rock Star
“Dave and I met at a hockey game – very romantic, I know! I had no idea who he was, and had never seen his band play. My station had a suite at the game and we were having a client night. I invited a mutual friend of both mine and Dave’s. She came with Dave and we just talked all night. I found out the next day that he had a girlfriend, which put a damper on everything, so I promptly forgot about him. Six

ten bags of groceries in the car, I will carry all ten bags in at once. That’s the great thing about live TV: you get one shot at it. [Co-anchor] Mike [Killeen] is great – he’s been a friend for a long time. We eat lunch together every day. I can even drag him out to do errands with me every now and then! It’s a good partnership.”
The Day of Collapse
“I was working a lot, had three small kids at home, and I was tired all the time. I was diagnosed as anemic, and blood tests showed that my anemia was getting worse. I had iron injections and they didn’t work. I had IV infusions of iron and they didn’t work. I was exhausted. I couldn’t go to the gym; couldn’t make dinner. I’m pale to begin with, but I took pale to a whole new level! After a tough Christmas holiday, I went back to work on January 3, 2012. I didn’t want to go because I had the worst headache I’ve ever had in my life, but it was my one-year anniversary with Mike and I was not going to miss it. No matter how much makeup they put on me, they could not disguise how white I was. As we were getting ready to go on air, I thought I was going to be sick. I went to the bathroom and passed out. I woke up to find that I had thrown up everywhere. I could not
stand up – every time I tried, I fell down again. Thankfully I had brought my phone with me. “When I got home, I crawled into bed and slept all night. The next day, I spoke with my haematologist on the phone, who said we need to do a bone marrow biopsy, a chest x-ray and a mammogram. I thought: now I know what you’re looking for. I slept some more. I could not move. The next morning I tried to get to the bathroom ten feet away. I fainted, woke up, passed out again. I had my phone with me and I called our home number. My husband answered and I said, ‘I need you.’”
Out of Scope
“The first thing the emergency doctor said to me was: you have no blood in your body. You need a transfusion. He said, you’re bleeding somewhere, but we don’t know where, and we can’t start looking until we stabilize you. I knew I was in the right place. They sent me for an endoscopy to look in my stomach, then a colonoscopy. The doctors said they knew something was wrong because I complained of pain during the colonoscopy, and they could feel something blocking the scope. They sent me for a CT scan so they could see my small intestine. A team of doctors crowded into my
hospital room to tell me they’d found a large tumor and would have to do surgery. They started prepping me right away, wheeling me to the operating room. It was like being on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy – I was waiting for someone to yell: ‘And scene! You were so good!’ I started thinking, what if I go in there and don’t come back out? Then I thought: I just need to surrender to the moment.”
The Gist of the Results
“They took a ten-centimetre tumor out of my small intestine. While I was in the hospital, I didn’t Google anything, I didn’t look at photos of my kids, I didn’t even think about my kids – I couldn’t go there. I just lay there and planned out every detail of their next birthday parties. It kept me going. When the pathology report came back, it indicated a rare kind of tumor called a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour, or GIST. None of us really knew what it meant – including my doctor. Fifteen in a million people get it, and it usually occurs in seniors. It does not respond to radiation or chemotherapy. The oncologist told me that 14 years ago I would have died. There was no cure and no treatment until 14 years ago, when a medication was discovered to work for this type of tumor. My question to him was, is this going to be what kills me? He said in the short term, no. In the long term, not if I can help it.”

“It’s still shocking to think that this happened. I have a CT scan every three months, and as much as I appreciate what a CT scan does, I hate the emotional roller coaster that comes with it. The voices in your head, from the time of the scan to seven days later when you see your doctor, make you a basket case. However, rotten as it was, there are a lot of things that I’m really thankful for. I’m grateful for the medication. I’m grateful that they caught the tumour in the nick of time. “When something like this happens, it throws everything into focus. Priorities are crystal clear and you don’t sweat the small stuff. My family is my world. I have a new respect for my health and my body. I have made a commitment to the gym, which I have never really done before, not properly. Nathan, the owner of my gym, knows how much this scared me, and he set me up with a trainer, massage therapist, physiotherapist and nutritionist. Every single doctor I spoke with told me the best thing you can do for yourself is work out. That is what I can control: exercising, eating properly, taking care of myself. It is not easy for me to go to the gym four times per week, but it has to be a priority. It’s my health. “At work, I have probably done more stories in the last two months than in the last two years. I have a new, positive outlook on how I can tell other people stories and hopefully make a difference. That’s all I want to do: make a difference.”

Take Off Ten Years
with Five At-home Hand Treatments By Liberty Craig
O
ur eyes may be the window to the soul, but our hands reveal the truth about our age. We women typically spend at least some time every day caring for our skin – on our faces. We cleanse, tone, moisturize, protect, and occasionally peel, buff or Botox. We apply makeup and each of us has our own routines for feeling as though we look our best when we leave the house. Our hands, however, we neglect. The fact is, our hands receive at least as much UV exposure as our faces; often a lot more. We abuse our hands with endless dishwashing and household chores, often using harsh detergents that dry and damage the skin. We garden in the summer and expose our hands to the elements in the winter. The result is scaly skin, mottled sun spots, ragged cuticles... and hands that look older than we’d like them to. Try these five at-home treatments for beautiful hands to match your beautiful face.
Screen
So your daily moisturizer contains an SPF? Good for you... but that doesn’t mean it’s protecting your hands. We wash our hands so often during the day (especially during cold and flu season) that your facial moisturizer barely makes it to the door. Prolonged sun exposure is almost solely responsible for all those brown “age” or “liver” spots you see
on old people’s hands – and that may be appearing on your own. It also causes veins to become more prominent, due to collagen damage that thins the skin. Use a heavier sunscreen with a higher sun protection factor for your hands, and reapply often. Tip: Carry a sunscreen in your purse with SPF 60 or more, so you can reapply every three hours while you are out.
Pamper
Too often, we buy expensive lotions and potions for our faces but use basic, inexpensive body lotion for our hands. Because our hands are subject to so much wear and tear, we must treat them well, and a lightweight moisturizer will not do the trick. Look for a hand lotion containing humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin plus ingredients like cocoa butter to prevent moisture loss. Reapply whenever you wash your hands. Tip: Wear leather gloves in cold weather. The leather will keep your hands hydrated and protect against dry air and harmful UV rays.
Correct and Camouflage
One easy way to bring a youthful look back to your hands is with the moisturizer we’ve already talked about – it will smooth and plump your skin and take off years with regular application. For those brown sunspots, you may want to try a skin-brightening product containing vitamin C or kojic acid. They take a few months to really work, and you must be sure to use a sunscreen whenever you are outdoors. If you want to take it further than at-home treatments, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies can effectively address those pigment spots. Tip: If you dislike the look of bulging veins on your hands, try a “light diffusing” moisturizer with micronized mineral particles designed to reflect light and camouflage problem areas.
Cure
That is – manicure! Ragged and overgrown cuticles, yellow nails and uneven nail lengths make hands look worn down and just plain older. Use a rejuvenating scrub to perk up your hands. Massage cuticle cream into each nail bed, and use an orange wood stick to push back your cuticles. File your nails until they appear even, and make sure to moisturize! Tip: A professional manicure goes a long way. You may want to simply use these techniques to maintain and prolong your manicure between appointments.
Wax
Yet another area of the body we need to wax? Not to worry – paraffin wax is a hand treatment that feels wonderful and leaves your hands plump, nourished and velvety soft. You can melt your own paraffin wax at home using a double-boiler, or purchase at-home paraffin wax kits. Many manicures now come with a paraffin wax option. Tip: Paraffin wax treatments are also used therapeutically for relief of joint and muscle pain. If you have aching hands, you can kill two birds with one stone!
Polish
Adding a little sparkle and shine can help perk up your makeup, your attire and, yes, your nails, too. However, as with clothing, the right shades make all the difference. Choose flattering colours that you would wear close to your face, like soft pinks and neutrals. A basic polish is great for an at-home treatment, or treat yourself to the newer shellac options available at the salon. Tip: Avoid painting your nails with trendy blue or green tones, as they will bring out the colour of your veins.

The Lunchtime
Lift By Dr. Shehla Ebrahim
T
he “Lunchtime Lift” is a new and revolutionary high-tech treatment that effectively lifts sagging skin and makes you look younger in less than an hour – without the use of needles or knives. The hallmark of aging is deflation. We look older when our faces naturally lose volume, Dr. Shehla Ebrahim and thus our youthful contours. Volume loss is particularly evident in the cheek and under-eye area. A youthful face is shaped like an inverted triangle, with fullness about the cheeks narrowing to a well formed chin and neck. As we age, the triangle begins to flip, and we grow more gaunt around the eyes and cheeks, with skin sagging and creating fullness around the chin, neck and jowls. The Lunchtime Lift utilizes two of the best noninvasive technologies in the industry today to address the problems of sagging and deflation: Ultherapy and Soft Lift.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy is an entirely new and unique type of nonsurgical treatment for the face and neck that uses ultrasound to lift and tone loose skin without any downtime. With the use of ultrasound imaging, practitioners can see the layers of tissue during treatment to ensure that the
energy is delivered precisely to where it will be the most productive. Significant skin lifting is achieved by focusing ultrasound energy specifically into the deep foundations below the skin layer. These are the same areas addressed in a face-lift surgery. With Ultherapy, we can lift and tighten the skin without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. This improves skin quality from the inside out. In addition to lifting and tightening, Ultherapy promotes the natural creation of collagen, which can help the skin maintain its youthfulness. The results are immediate; however, the ultimate lifting will take place over two to three months as the collagen starts to rebuild. There is no downtime because the process is natural and gradual. Multiple randomized controlled trials since 2006 have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of this procedure. Ultherapy works best for women between the ages of 35 and 60 who are showing mild to moderate laxity in the face and neck. Typically, two treatments spaced 12 to18 months apart are recommended for best results. The beauty of Ultherapy is its compatibility with other procedures that can address more superficial tissues, such as Botox and facial fillers. As part of the Lunchtime Lift, Ultherapy is used to lift and tighten the skin and bring back the narrow lower contours of the youthful face.
Soft Lift
The Soft Lift is an extremely well-suited complementary treatment with Ultherapy. Soft Lift is a combination treatment that is customized to

precisely target each patient’s individual needs. The upper one third of the face is treated with Botox to relax the muscles of facial expression. The middle third of the face is filled to replace volume, particularly at the apex of the cheek, to create the perception of youth. Finally, the lower face is contoured and shaped. Dermal fillers are natural hyaluronic acid -based fillers that are used to shape the jaw line, the pre-jowl hollows, chin, smoker’s lines as well as the area in front of the ears. Lips may also be enhanced in women whose lips lose volume as a result of aging. Unlike a traditional brow lift surgery or face lift, the Lunchtime Lift offers naturallooking results, which we believe is the most important aspect in ensuring natural beauty is maintained.
