ypically, on the cover of any issue of Fresh Vancouver, you’ll find a woman who represents our readership. That usually means a smart, successful Vancouver woman over forty years of age... or at least over thirty. So what are we doing with a 26-year-old gracing the covers of Fresh? The young and beautiful Yael Cohen has two very good reasons for being here. First, she is the founder of one of Vancouver’s most successful charitable organizations – which she started at age 22. Second, her aim is to teach Generation Y how to teach their own parents (which include our readers!) how to detect cancers early, when they are still 90 percent curable. That means she is saving our readers’ lives. And there is no better reason to feature anyone on any magazine cover. Yael Cohen is an inspiration to us all; a young woman who threw everything she had into helping her mom through breast cancer, and in so doing discovered her passion in life. Her outrageously named charity (Fuck Cancer) and her fresh, direct approach has opened new doors in the cancer space and garnered attention in some very elite circles. Yael, for example, spoke at the White House. At age 24. Our interview with Yael Cohen is must-read for any demographic. And while most of us are no longer as young as the lovely, fresh-faced Yael, there’s no harm in trying to look it! This issue of Fresh is filled with nutrition, makeup, exercise and cosmetic tips to help you feel your absolute best as the skin baring season approaches. Plus, check out the summer swimsuit guide, specifically designed for women who haven’t seen twenty in awhile!

Advancements in Chemical Peels By Summer La Belle

A

s more and more advancements in non-invasive skincare treatments emerge, one centuries-old staple remains a favourite: chemical peels. However, it is not uncommon for the average beauty consumer to be put off by the idea of undergoing a peel. The name alone is enough to conjure up images of scorched cheeks and peeling skin. The history of chemical peels dates back to 1500 B.C. in Egypt, where radiant and smooth-looking skin was a must among more affluent women, and sun damaged skin was a sign of lower rank in society. In the days before Botox and skin lasers, women used a variety of substances such as alabaster, oils, and salt to improve the skin. Many of us are familiar with Cleopatra, who was known to bathe in sour milk, a highly valued exfoliant containing lactic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid commonly used today. But acid formulas and the professionals behind them have come a long way since their first debut. Not only are we finding versatility in the benefits of topical application; more results are being achieved with the discovery of potent, safe new peeling agents.

Custom Made for Your Skin

The evolution and development of chemical peels now provides skin practitioners an array of acids and enzymes to create and customize the perfect peel for almost all skin types and concerns. The chemical peel is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions, such as hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne, sun damage and photo aging. By removing the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, texture and tone of the skin, hydration, pore size, blemishes, oil production and an overall healthier appearance to the skin.

Unwrapping the New Vitamin A “Infusion Peel”

A newer kind of peel to hit the market is called the Vitamin A Infusion Peel. Vitamin A is the powerhouse ingredient when it comes to antiaging and collagen stimulation. The Vitamin A Infusion Peel utilizes the latest science and technology in skincare, combining concentrated vitamin A with custom blended enzymes and nutrients to heal, strengthen, protect and rejuvenate the skin. The Vitamin A Infusion Peel utilizes a concentrated form of retinaldehdye, the most potent and least irritating form of vitamin A. It is a great option for sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinoic acid. The Vitamin A Infusion Peel is a great option for many skin concerns due to is customization. It is commonly used in the treatment of acne, rosacea, aging skin, UV damage, and helps to gently lighten pigmentation. Two major causes of aging skin are inflammation and decreased blood circulation. Infusion peels are capable of both reducing inflammation of the skin and improving blood flow.

undergo a transformation, minimizing fine lines, firming slackened tissue, and improving overall skin texture. It will benefit any skin type. Hibiscus Flower Acid Peel: The Hibiscus Flower Acid Peel blends the next generation of AHAs with an enhanced Azelaic Mandelic Complex to induce cell turnover for renewed, freshened skin. It smoothes and evens the skin tone and balances oil production. This healing treatment provides more hydration than lactic acid while offering strong lightening benefits. Enhanced even more with phytic-pyruvic acid, this soothing peel stimulates collagen activity, and provides potent antioxidant benefits. Hot Tomato Peel: The tomato has many naturally occurring acids and antioxidants. The Hot Tomato Peel has anti-bacterial benefits, making this a specialized peel for problematic, oily, acne-prone skin. It is considered a mid-depth peeling agent and the skin will experience mild sloughing and increased exfoliation. Baby Boomer Peel: Don’t let the name fool you: this peel is great for all ages. The Baby Boomer Peel is custom blended and designed to improve skin discoloration, fine lines, coarse texture, enlarged pores and dull, lifeless skin. Skin will experience moderate to intense exfoliation for at least one week, and the appearance of your skin will continue to improve over several weeks. You will literally be peeling away the years.

Peel Your Way to Healthy Skin

Peels are cost effective, minimally invasive anti-aging treatments that produce excellent results, require little to no downtime, and have virtually no significant complications when performed by a skilled skin specialist. You can begin to see improvements after just one session; however, a series of treatments will bring significant visible change to the appearance of the skin. Your skin creates one of the first impressions you present to the world, so start peeling your way to healthy skin today! For treating a wide variety of skin concerns, peels may be the perfect option for you. However, it is crucial that you find a skilled practitioner to administer both chemical peels and infusion peels. To determine if you are a candidate for a peel, it is important to have a thorough consultation prior to any treatment to discuss your health and medical history as well as your goals and expectations.

A Closer Look at Four Advanced Peels

Let’s take a closer look at four of the more advanced peels available today: 1. Peptide Sake Peel: The Peptide Sake Peel blends two regenerating formulations, Sake Peel and Vitamin A+ Peptide Peel, which increases hydration and regulates sebaceous activity. Skin will

W

ith the long-awaited arrival of spring sunshine and blooming tulips, we are reminded that summer is just around the corner. Our thoughts drift to the beauty of beach season... then turn to the dreaded idea of having to bare it all. We hit the gym and try the newest juice cleanse, but for many of us, inch loss is not our main objective. The naked truth is, many of us would be a little more likely to embrace our bodies if they weren’t riddled with cellulite. An estimated 80 to 90 percent of women are affected by cellulite. It seems like every year, a new wonder cream hits the market. You’ve heard it all before: big promises with little results. But where does one turn when creams and cardio do not work, and when body wraps and spa treatments are too much of a time and financial burden? It was this exasperation that led to the creation of an effective new cellulite solution based on an ancient remedy: anti-cellulite cupping. Founded on the principles of ancient Chinese cupping methods and paired with natural products full of highly active ingredients, this in-spa and take-home treatment is a breath of fresh air when it comes to finding a cellulite solution.

The Ancient Art of Cupping

The practice of Chinese cupping has been employed for many centuries. Used as a device for many ailments, it has also proven very efficient in reducing the appearance of cellulite. There are many conditions that result in cellulite, including hormonal changes, diet and genetics, but the one common root cause in the creation of cellulite is a lack of circulation and lymphatic drainage. Traditional cupping is said to help draw toxins out of the lymphatic system, increase circulation and allow for better absorption of vital nutrients applied to the skin post-treatment. Inspired

by this ancient technology but redesigned with the modern woman in mind, anti-cellulite cupping uses a silicon cup created to function in motion so it can slide back and forth over trouble areas (usually the upper thighs and buttocks). Unlike more traditional glass cups, the medical grade silicone is able to contour the fine curves of the leg without losing suction.

Firm and Tighten

Once tissues are softened and lymphatic drainage is initiated, the skin is more easily able to absorb the active ingredients in topical products. Following your cupping treatment with nutrient-rich massage oil, shower gel and body cream will amplify your results. Active ingredients such as caffeine, kikui nut, coenzyme Q10 and sea kelp help nourish, tighten and firm the skin. Whether you want to be pampered with an in-spa treatment or you wish to perform your anti-cellulite treatment in the privacy and comfort of your home, anti-cellulite cupping is a great way to help you finally banish your not-so-darling dimples. It’s not always about trying something new; sometimes your best bet is trying something old with a modern twist!

Passionate about quality, ethics and beauty, Chrissy Hlatky developed ButterCup, a breakthrough anti-cellulite cupping treatment and product line that is all-natural and cruelty free. Inspired by the ancient Chinese cupping technology and paired with a powerful line of body products, ButterCup is the first cellulite solution of its kind to become available in spas and as a take-home treatment. Five Key Steps to Hydrating Your Skin By Dr Lydia Waterson, MD

T

here are many myths surrounding the hydration of our skin. While it can be hard to separate myth from fact, the one truth we can all be sure of is this: hydration is the key to healthy, youthfullooking skin that functions at its best. When it comes to hydration strategies, however, things aren’t so cut-and-dry.

Why Water Won’t Work

Dr Lawrence E Gibson, MD, associated with the Mayo Clinic staff, states that although proper hydration is important for overall health, it is not clear that drinking extra water affects the skin’s hydration in healthy people. There are many good reasons to drink water as it regulates body temperature, keeps brain function optimal, is very important for regulating bodily functions, aids in digestion, is key in carrying nutrients into organs, and provides a moist environment that benefits ear, nose and throat. Dr Katie Rodan, a dermatologist in the San Francisco Bay area and co-author of Write Your Skin a Prescription for a Change states: “Humans aren’t like plants. Our skin does not perk up when we drink water.” When you drink a glass or more of water it doesn’t go straight to the skin. It goes through the intestines, where it is absorbed into the blood stream, circulated through the body to do its job where needed, and finally filtered through the kidneys, flushing out waste products. After all that, it hydrates the cells. When it comes to keeping the skin hydrated, studies have shown that drinking fluids falls short of moisturizing the skin. A 2002 study conducted at the Dartmouth medical school found no skin hydration benefits from drinking eight glasses of water a day. Although the skin is made of water-filled cells like the rest of the body, fluid affects every other organ in the body before it arrives at the skin cells.

How to Hydrate Properly

The skin is made up of three layers: the outer layer (epidermis), the underlying skin (dermis) and the subcutaneous fatty layer. If the outer layer of the skin doesn’t contain enough water, the skin will start feeling rough and lose its plumpness and elasticity. Despite this connection, research has shown us that drinking water is not the answer.

12

|

There are five important steps we can take to keep our skin properly hydrated: 1. Maintain the health and integrity of the epidermis. The epidermis is key in preventing loss of moisture from the skin. 2. Control the level of humidity in your environment. The level of humidity in your environment is affected by excessive heating, central air conditioning, low temperatures in winter, high temperatures in summer and sun exposure. All of these factors cause loss of water from the epidermis, leading to dehydrated skin. Once we understand this, we can control many of these factors. I always advise my patients to have a humidifier in their homes, for overnight use in their bedrooms, and in their work spaces. 3. Manage other factors that affect the health of the skin. Aging, hormones, certain medications, excessive sun and wind exposure, occupational factors that cause irritation, and many other factors can affect the health of the skin on a daily basis. Try to modify or eliminate damaging factors wherever possible. 4. Avoid excessive cleansing. Prolonged and repeated contact with water as part of an excessive cleansing routine will compromise the integrity of the skin and aid in dehydration. 5. Maintain moisture levels. The most important thing we can do is keep existing water in the skin! This can be accomplished using humectant products that fix water within the skin’s corneocytes, along with hydrophilic products that form a gel and hold water, or hydrophobic products that create a water-tight film on the surface, limiting the loss of water from the skin. Discuss your skin’s moisture levels with a professional skincare therapist who can suggest appropriate products for protecting, moisturizing, and maintaining the integrity of your skin. Internationally accredited since 1986, Dr Lydia Waterson MD has trained and practiced in Ireland, England, South Africa & Canada, and is now practicing at The Coliseum MediSpa. The Secret of Youth:

It’s In the Eyes By Shannon Mann

I

t’s so unfair, isn’t it? The more we smile, spend time in the sun, go dancing late at night with our friends, or do anything fun in life, the more our eyes begin to show our age. When the good times catch up with us, there are some things we can do to reduce the appearance of those inevitable changes to keep us looking rested and relaxed – without surgery.

Twenties and Thirties: Natural Beauty

We deal with a large number of bridal clients who often allow a number of bad habits to build up and create tired eyes. Lack of sleep, poor diet, dehydration, and stress leading up to the wedding can create eyes that don’t sparkle as they should. At this age, a few natural solutions are all you need: • Drink at least two litres of water a day to keep the skin properly hydrated and bright. • Get at least eight hours of undisturbed sleep to prevent puffy eyes in the morning. • Reduce your consumption of diuretics like alcohol and caffeinated beverages to keep that H2O in your body! • Exercise to keep your circulation healthy and your skin looking flushed. In your twenties, these tips are pretty much all it takes to keep your eyes sparkling and young. Of course, all of these tips should be kept up throughout your life – but you may need to add a few tricks to your arsenal as the years roll by!

Late Thirties and After: Tricks of the Trade

Let’s get real now! Between running a business, raising children, and running a home, I don’t have time to do all of the above (even though I wish my life was so Zen!), so I have to rely on a few cosmetic tricks that keep the tired eyes at bay: • Keep the skin around your eyes hydrated. My favourite product to reduce the appearance of fine lines is Clinique All About Eyes Under Eye Cream. I love this cream and swear I can see a difference after a few days. Apply under and around your eyes before bedtime. Fine lines are reduced and the skin sur-

rounding the eyes appears plumped and hydrated. • Follow with under-eye concealer that won’t crease into fine lines. My favourite is Clinique All About Eyes Under Eye Concealer. For clients with darker circles, try Tarte Under Eye Creaseless Concealer, which gives you greater coverage. • As the skin around the eyes begins to age, it becomes thinner and crepey in appearance. Avoid adding metallic shadow on skin going through these changes, as these can enhance the appearance of uneven skin. Instead, use a ‘satin finish’ (finely milled metallic shadow) eye shadow only on the brow bone and tear duct area to brighten up

the appearance of your eyes. The skin on those areas stays smooth and taut, so reflective shadows look best. On the rest of your eyes, use matte shadows to reduce the appearance of fine lines. As we age, we should also avoid eye shadow colours that are much lighter than the colour of our complexion, as they can highlight any fine lines. Stick to shades that are up to two shades lighter or darker on your eyelid as a rule of thumb. • Liquid eyeliner can enhance wrinkles on the upper eyelid and loss of elasticity will show if the liner has any reflective properties. Use pencil instead and smudge it with dark coloured eye shadow (our favourite is ‘Typographic’ shadow for MAC) close to the upper lash line on top of the pencil to give definition to your peepers while concealing any wrinkles. Curl your lashes and coat with mascara.

14

|

fresh Vancouver Issue 18

• Use white or nude eyeliner (lighter than your skin colour) on your lower water line to brighten up your eye area and make your eyes appear larger. • Pull your hair into a high, tight ponytail before applying makeup. This will lift your brows slightly and open up your eyes!

Beyond Makeup

Natural beauty and makeup tips can go a long way to keep the look of ageing eyes at bay, but the next steps take it further with semi-permanent cosmetic procedures. Botox is a semi-permanent way to give yourself a slight brow lift, and is also a great way to get rid of crow’s feet when you smile. In my mid-thirties, I have noticed that when I smile, my brows are starting to lower, making my eyes appear smaller, and crow’s feet appear on the outside corners of my eyes. Using Botox helps you avoid these problems when you smile, can prevent crow’s feet altogether, and keeps your eyes looking more open and bright. Lash growth products are a great way to add volume and length to your eyelashes, which begin to thin and break as we age. Latisse is a prescription medication used to grow longer, fuller, darker lashes. It promises to double your lash fullness in 16 weeks. A one-month supply costs about $100 to $120, so the 16-week course will set you back over $400. There are possible side effects from this medication, so discuss this product with your doctor if you are interested. Aging is inevitable and our eyes are a marker of the passage of time. However, with these natural beauty, makeup and cosmetic tricks, you can keep those windows to your soul bright, clear and full of life.

The Simplest Anti-Aging Formula

that Every Woman Should Use

By Tracy Kaye Holly, CSNA Master

I

t’s not rocket science. Anti-aging is simply a formula of basic fitness and good health. Take care of your body, and it will look and feel cared for! Sure, you may think you already know it all – but the question is: are you putting it into practice? Following this simple formula will keep your body in tip-top condition, sustainably, for your entire life.

#1: Get Active!

First, get active. Sustaining natural muscle creates a strong immune system and assists in fat loss. The skin on your bones will become tight and toned; you’ll have a natural glow and clear, sparkling eyes. All of this creates a youthful look. Physical activity not only refreshes and strengthens the body, mind and spirit; it also improves circulation, reduces blood pressure, tones and builds muscle tissue, develops endurance, increases agility and stimulates the internal organs. A well-rounded fitness regimen includes weight training, cardio and stretching. If you do each of these once per week, you’re on the road to agelessness! I was once told by a yoga guru that you are only as young as your spine. Stretch!

#2: Hydrate!

Water is the solution to pollution. Drink at least two litres of filtered water per day to flush out impurities and hydrate the body. Keep your cells well hydrated. This will increase your energy levels and can diminish ailments such as headaches, inflammation and constipation. All in all, you’ll feel lighter and tighter! Make hydration a priority!

#3: Sleep!

Sleep is an anti-aging tonic. During sleep, our bodies recover and release growth hormone. GH regenerates every cell and fixes things that are broken.

#4: Eat!

Our bodies need to be nourished many times

throughout the day. Think of a newborn baby that eats, sleeps and excretes all day long. This is what we call supplying the biological demand. What happens to us as we age? We get off of our routine and we grow old! Eat fresh, organic greens such as kale, Swiss chard, spinach, broccoli and leaf lettuce. Why? They neutralize acidic waste and keep the skeletal system strong and pliable. Green plants are loaded with chlorophyll and many essential elements including magnesium and calcium. Strong bones equal freedom of movement and youthfulness. Protein is the anchor. Our bodies don’t store it, so get small injections of high-quality protein every day, all day, throughout the day. This is a critical habit of good health. Protein feeds muscles and stabilizes the metabolism, which means it helps reduce sweet cravings and can aid in a good night’s sleep. A simple solution is to drink protein shakes using whey isolate, hemp or seed proteins.

#5: Take Your Vitamins!

Start a vitamin and mineral program. Include essential fatty acids (EFAs), herbs and homeopathic remedies. These products heal the body and slow the aging process. Don’t forget vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin.” Vitamin D plays a dual role as both vitamin and hormone. Low blood levels of vitamin D are associated with increased mortality. Many clinicians and physicians now recommend 4,000 IU (100 µg) per day.

#6: Chat with Friends!

Friendships need to be nurtured. Make a quick call to say hi or send an email to let them know they’re in your thoughts. Make a commitment to get together as a group at least once a month

to celebrate a special event or have a pot-luck dinner. Think of it as a play date for grownups!

#7: Read a book!

Pick up a book, magazine or newspaper and read at least an article, page or chapter every day. This daily habit can improve your knowledge, memory and general awareness. Reading will also expand your vocabulary and motivate you in many ways. It’s also a great way of keeping up with the times!

#8: Dance!

Take up any style of dancing as a hobby. Dancing provides a pleasant means of obtaining healthy physical activity in a non-smoking, non-alcoholic environment. The heart and lungs receive aerobic stimulation, which improves stamina and endurance. The back muscles become stronger, and the legs, ankles and feet adapt with improved condition. Dancing requires the repetition of specific movement patterns by memory. This is how it stimulates neurogenesis in the brain. You also have to coordinate body movement in time to musical rhythm and sound. Dancing is a full-body toner and creates a positive, youthful mental attitude.

#9: Sing!

Start singing, even if you can’t carry a tune! Singing is an aerobic activity improving oxygen flow and making us more alert. Singing helps us to live in the moment. It allows us to forget about our worries and concentrate fully on one activity.

Q: How does menopause affect my skin? A: We all know that our skin changes as we age, but during menopause there is a sudden, dramatic drop in our powerhouse hormone, estrogen. Few of us are prepared for the dry, dehydrated, dull skin that follows. The cells in skin have estrogen receptors, and that means our cells react and respond to the loss of estrogen. The results of this dramatic change include: • Loss of collagen, which provides the skin’s main structural support. • A decrease in glucosaminglycans (GAGs), which hold water and provide plumpness and moisture. • A decrease in dermal thickness. • Loss of elasticity, causing increased wrinkling. Since hormone loss is responsible for these unwanted changes, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can prevent many of them, and has been proven effective in countless studies and clinical trials. Whether or not you decide to try HRT, there are a number of additional techniques for minimizing the effects of menopause on the skin: • Be gentle with your skin! Gentle cleansing twice a day with gentle exfoliation twice a week will reduce the build-up of dry skin cells. • Feed your skin! Use a serum to add moisture plus nurturing and supportive ingredients like peptides, botanicals and antioxidants. Antioxidants like vitamin C are extremely important in protecting the skin from further damage due to free radicals. • Stimulate your skin! Another important factor is vitamin A (in the form of retinoids), which is well known for rebuilding and rejuvenating aging skin. • Moisturize your skin! Lock in your serum with a good emollient moisturizer to maintain optimal hydration. • Prevent further photo-aging! Use a good sun block every day with minimum SPF 30. • Relax! Take ten minutes a day to meditate, reflect and relax. It will show in your skin! Internationally accredited since 1986, Dr Lydia Waterson MD has trained and practiced in Ireland, England, South Africa and Canada. She is now practicing at Lonsdale Medical Clinic and The Coliseum MediSpa.

Q: Why do I get a dark upper lip in the summer? It looks like a freckle mustache! A:

Melasma is a very common brown, tan, or blue-gray facial skin discoloration seen almost exclusively in women. It typically appears on the upper cheeks, upper lip, forehead and chin of women 20 to 50 years of age. It is thought to be complex interaction between sun exposure and hormonal changes. It is most commonly seen in women of Latin, Asian, and African descent, but it affects a significant number of Caucasian women as well. Melasma is notoriously difficult to treat, and the best approach is prevention of the hyperpigmentation that occurs with this condition. This means strict avoidance of sun exposure, and diligent use of a broad spectrum SPF of 30 or greater every day, rain or shine, at the beach or in the car. There are three steps to reversing melasma: 1. Protect the skin by doubling or tripling your sunscreen. First use a chemical sunscreen, followed by a physical sun block containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and finally add a mineral makeup powder with SPF that you can reapply throughout the day. 2. Suppress the overactive pigment-producing cells in your skin called melanocytes. This is where fading creams containing kojic acid or hydroquinone (HQ) come into play. There are many overthe-counter products containing two percent HQ, but shortterm use of prescription strength products with four percent HQ is more effective for melasma. 3. Gently resurface the skin to help remove existing hyperpigmentation This is where combining hydroquinone with exfoliating agents such as tretinoin, glyolic, lactic or azelaic acids can help fade brown patches faster than HQ alone. Depending on how deep your melasma is, chemical peels and resurfacing laser procedures like Fraxel can reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

An F-Bomb for Cancer: Interview with

ancer makes us angry, scared, exasperated and desperate. The search for answers and the fight itself require bravery and defiance. If there was ever a time to pull out a good, juicy f-bomb, it’s when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. The word “fuck” is shocking and uncomfortable, and it encompasses the complicated range of emotions brought forth by cancer. It also has the capacity to garner a great deal of attention when used publicly. Put it together with the word “cancer,” and you get a phrase that speaks volumes. When Yael Cohen made a t-shirt for her mom with that very phrase boldly splashed across the chest, her mother, recently diagnosed with breast cancer, wore it proudly. It turned an unexpected number of heads. And it spawned ideas. At the tender age of 22, Yael formed a charity based on those two little words and one heady concept: to reach out to her own generation and help them navigate the maelstrom of cancer. By finding it early, we can beat it most of the time. To the plugged-in generation, a little information presented just the right way has the power to save lives. Yael’s raw, honest approach has resonated with Generation Y and beyond. Her charity has been lauded by the media and earned Yael awards and accolades via the Globe and Mail, Forbes, Elle and Chatelaine. She has spoken at the White House and to the UN. Now 26, Yael Cohen is stronger than ever, fucking cancer one early detection at a time.

Discovering Cancer

“My mom had an abnormal mammogram and was told to come back for a second one. I will never forget sitting in that little room with her films up on the light boxes, and her doctor telling us she had cancer. I think we all knew, but we just hoped and prayed that it was anything but. It’s a difficult moment for anybody, and not just the patient. A patient doesn’t get cancer; a whole family does. I think sometimes we forget that.”

Saving Mom’s Life

“I was heavily involved in the process, and I didn’t take the advice that I now give to other families. It’s really important to acknowledge and accept what you’re feeling, whether as a patient or a caregiver. I thought I had to be so strong for my mom and my family. I never cried in front of them – which is not to say I didn’t cry. When there was nothing left to distract me for the day, I would call my older brother and just sob. I could do what I did because I would fall apart late at night and my big brother would piece me back together. The experience changed my life. It was the first time I realized that my parents are mortal. You feel so helpless. I thought it was my job to save my mom’s life.”

What’s in a Name?

“My charity was built around an emotional, visceral response to those two words together: fuck cancer. Cancer has become such a public word, and we hear about it so often that we’ve become numb to it. We wanted to build something authentic and human, which is why we kept that name for the charity. Fuck is a funny thing – it’s our largest asset and our largest pain in the ass. I often get asked how I could speak at the White House or the UN with that word in my name, and I’m like, oh honey, I spoke at the White House and the UN because I have that word in my name! It’s the reason we’ve been successful. We have to be smart with it and make sure we have media-friendly versions, and don’t overuse it. We try not to use the word fuck unless it’s next to the word cancer. It’s never sexual. It’s never violent. It’s defeated and defiant; it’s brave and vulnerable; it’s powerful and exasperated. I can count on one hand the number of times someone has been upset or offended by our name – and I can count on one finger the times people don’t agree with what we’re doing, even if they don’t love the name.”

“There’s no appropriate social response to cancer.”

Defining Fuck Cancer

“One in two men and one in three women will get cancer in their lifetimes, but 90 percent of all cancers are curable if caught in stage one. Early detection saved my mom’s life, and became the foundation for Fuck Cancer. People think you have an idea and you try it, and it works or it doesn’t. The truth of the matter is that I had unbelievable mentors and advisors who helped me figure out exactly what I wanted to do, and how. We narrowed our target audience to Gen Y – the generation that is comfortable with the online space. They interact and consume through social media and technology, and they’re comfortable with self-

Making Mom an F-Shirt

“I had no intention of starting a charity. I just made my mom a t-shirt, and it said ‘Fuck Cancer.’ The shocking thing was how people responded to it. I thought it was just how my family felt, but I realized that a lot of people felt that way. I’ve learned more than I would ever have liked to know about cancer, and I wanted to make sure that I did something good with that knowledge. When you hear you have cancer, you are emotionally compromised. You need somebody there, whether it’s a person or an organization, to help you understand what’s actually happening and to make sure you’re okay – your heart, your soul, your mind; not just your body. So I decided to start a charity. If I could help other people through the hardest days of their lives, I damn well wanted to.”

reduction. We want people to make realistic micro-changes that, over time, can add up to bigger change. “The second component we added is the one I’m the most proud of, and that has resonated most with our community, and that’s the communication side. We focus so much on the body when it comes to cancer, but you’re human – you are emotionally and psychologically affected by this experience. We created resources dealing with topics like: How do you tell your mom you have cancer? How do you tell your six-year-olddaughter she has cancer in a way that doesn’t make her feel guilty? What does a biopsy feel like – not just what is a biopsy? We’re humanizing it, and the community really thanked us for that. In the few weeks since we launched that new project, our website saw an eleven thousand percent increase in traffic.”

Practicing What You Preach

“In the beginning, so much was happening and I didn’t want to lose momentum, so I was making decisions that were great for my company but terrible for me. I wasn’t sleeping, I was skipping the gym. Again, through some of our amazing advisors and mentors as well as my trainer, Nathan at Studeo 55, I realigned my value system and learned to prioritize my own health and to practice what I preach. We do really intense workouts that take all of my attention and allow me to think about nothing else for that hour. It lets me sweat out the previous day and get a great endorphin rush so I can go at the new day strong. “I wanted to try every kind of diet plan so I could talk knowledgeably about them. I was vegan for a year; I was paleo for a while. I don’t eat meat. I avoid alcohol, processed sugar, refined grains and all the things that are really hard on our bodies. But I’m only human and I have a major sweet tooth, so if I really want a cookie, I’m going to eat the damn cookie!”

education. Of course now we’ve hit far beyond that demographic, but we started by being very specific. “We wanted to create a space where people could say and feel and do exactly what they want, ask the questions that they didn’t think they were allowed to, and get answers to things that people just weren’t talking about. We teach people how to look for cancer and find it. Specifically, we teach kids how to teach their parents, how to get involved, how to make their parents find cancers early. Nobody was really talking to my generation about cancer. Youth today are uniquely positioned to make fundamental changes in so many areas, and I wanted to harness that potential in the cancer space. We can spread a message around the world at the click of a button. We have unlimited access to information, and because of that we can teach our parents.”

New Initiatives

“After starting with early detection, we added prevention last year. What you put into your body directly affects your overall health. We have to take responsibility for the things we can control. It’s not about wearing organic hemp clothing and going on a macrobiotic diet. We can make small changes to our existing habits that have a huge impact on our risk

“I don’t care what anyone says – there are parts of cancer that are downright hilarious. They’re often funny because they’re so uncomfortable that all you can do is laugh. And that’s okay! It’s weird and awkward and ridiculous, and it’s not only okay to laugh, it’s freaking great. When you’ve lost your sense of humour, that’s when you’ve lost hope. Our voice is very raw and authentic, often tongue in cheek, and there are tender moments but it’s a balance. That’s very rare in the cancer space, because apparently when you get cancer you also lose your sense of humour – which is bullshit to me. There’s no appropriate social response to cancer.”

Running Around Swearing

“Without the unbelievable team that chose to help me build this, I would be some lunatic running around swearing. And I’m still a lunatic running around swearing, but now they let me do it on stage! It is important to know that helping improve somebody else’s wheel is just as valuable as building your own. Top-down leadership doesn’t work for us; we are collaborative and we value our community. We have a small but mighty team. Everyone’s opinions are valued and together we are building something that’s so much stronger than if I was just telling everyone what to do.”

Love What You Do

“I joke that my mom’s the only person in the world who had to get cancer so that I could find my calling. I don’t feel like it’s a job; I feel so lucky that this is what I get to do every day. I get to help people through some of the hardest days of their lives, and work with an unbelievable team. It makes a big difference to love what you do, and love who you do it with. We’ve been invited into some really fantastic experiences and circles, which has helped Fuck Cancer so much. It’s been one hell of a few years!”

Amazing Arms are Within Reach By Tanya Hunt

S

ummer is just around the corner and whether you are going strapless, halter or spaghetti strapped for the season, you can make the simplest top look stunning with sculpted arms. But how does one attain this? Many women are afraid of working out their arms with weights for fear of looking like a man. Dieting alone will not get you chiseled arms; you will just get a softer and smaller version of what you already have! To firm the flab and stop your arms from flapping in the breeze, you definitely need to do resistance training. For amazing results, you must train your biceps, triceps, as well as the crown to a beautiful arm: your shoulders. When you hear people talking about arm muscles, most of us automatically think of biceps, but your tricep actually makes up two-thirds of your arm. You will be sure to see results quickly as the small muscles respond quickly to resistance training. If you combine resistance training with a clean diet, you will accelerate your results.

Firm That Flab

By performing these six exercises three times a week, you will be turning heads in your sleeveless tops! You will need a five- or eight-pound dumbbell, a red resistance band and a skipping rope for equipment. Repeat this cycle three times consecutively every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Warm up: five minutes of skipping or jogging.

Your 60-Day Challenge

While weight training sculpts muscle, if your body fat is too high, you won’t be able to see the toned muscle you are attaining. I suggest giving yourself a 60-day challenge to clean up your diet and accelerate results. Knowledge of good nutrition gives you the power to change your body. Try this challenge for two months and let me know your results! • Add two large salads with low-calorie or lemon dressing per day. • Replace white starchy foods with whole grain foods. • Drink the right amount of water for your weight (two-thirds of your body weight in ounces per day over six or more servings). For example, if a person weighed 175 pounds, you would multiply 175 by 0.67 and learn that you should be drinking about 117 oz of water per day. Add 12 oz of water for every 30 minutes that you work out. • Add two servings (3-4 oz each) of white fish, white chicken or turkey breast to your daily diet. • Don’t drink your calories! Anything liquid you ingest should have fewer than 20 calories per cup. • Take a multivitamin daily to be sure you are getting essential nutrients. • Start your day with a healthy breakfast. My personal favourite is an egg white omelet made in about four minutes, with everything pre-diced and ready in my fridge. • Replace deep fried foods with grilled or steamed meat and veggies. Getting in great shape and in excellent health is attainable as long as you give yourself a few rules to live by and employ healthy habits. Enjoy your amazing new arms!

for the Normal Woman By Liz Curell

S

o you’re not twenty anymore. Does that mean you shouldn’t be able to enjoy the beach this summer? Hardly! Liz Curell, owner of Just Cruisin’ Swimwear in downtown Vancouver, answers the most frequently asked questions from those who dread swimsuit season. Follow Liz’s tips to find the right figureflattering suit for any body, at any age. Enjoy the sun, surf and sand in style this summer!

Q: I just hate the way I look in a bathing suit! Are there any tricks to looking and feeling better in swimwear?

Liz: We all have areas where we’d like to see a

Q: What should I do if I have a large build but small breasts? Liz: This figure fits into the “pear” shape category. Choose a suit with an eye-catching print or detailing such as frills above the waistline. A tankini would work, with ruffles or pleats and a simple brief that would slim the thighs and hips. Another choice would be a one-piece suit with a printed bra area and a solid colour at the bottom.

Q: What if my cup size is huge but the rest of me isn’t?

few improvements. Go to a specialty swimwear store and ask the clerk for personal service to select a comfortable suit you look good in. Try sunning on your patio or backyard first to get a little colour and get used to being in your swimsuit, then head to the beach with a paperback, cover-up and a snack. Relax and enjoy yourself. Look around: you’ll be surprised at the various sizes and shapes. I guarantee you’ll think to yourself, “I’m not all that bad!”

Liz: Zero in on a cup sized bra. A true swim store should have specialty swimwear with cup sizes ranging from D to EE and up. Look for underwire support and over-the-shoulder straps. Remember to tell the clerk what you plan to use the suit for, as there are different suits for swimming lengths, water aquatics, a holiday cruise or sunny vacation.

Q:

ter a bulging tummy?

What is the number-one problem most women have when it comes to buying a bathing suit?

Liz: Many ladies haven’t purchased a suit in a

few years, and it’s to be expected their figures have changed. Their departure to a sun destination is quickly approaching and they’re not happy. My advice is, don’t leave your swimsuit selection to the last minute. Go a few weeks before your trip to a specialty store that boasts a great selection in various size ranges and styles. The sizing of swimwear is often different than clothing. A good rule of thumb is, if your bra size is 34, then generally you would fit a size 10 swimsuit. Don’t be upset if your street pants are size 6 to 8 and the swimsuits that fit the best are size 10 to 12.

Q: I’ve had three children. How can I best flatLiz:

If you want a one-piece suit, ask to see a suit with a tummy control inner lining. A gathered or surplice suit would be the answer here, or possibly a two-piece elongated tankini top over a basic high-waisted brief or roll-top bottom. If the brief is too skimpy, then a skirt with attached panty would work for you.

Also consider a one-piece with some sort of detail or print at the bust line, shifting to a solid bottom area.

Q: I feel like I’m caught between those “cute” surf-style bathing suits that are too young for me and those floral, “old-lady” bathing suits that are too mature. What can I wear to look sexy but sophisticated by the pool?

Liz: Try a one-piece with a deep-V neckline,

a sleek bandeau with removable straps, or an ultra-chic one-piece European line of swimwear. A true swim boutique should have several styles they can show you such as ethnic prints, bold or pinstripes, side splicing and more. Also, not all florals are old-lady! Prints can often hide flaws far better than solid colour.

Q: What’s your most important piece of advice for women when it comes to finding flattering swimwear they can feel good in? Liz: If your body is anything less than perfect,

don’t purchase swimwear online. Even with the same manufacturer, we often discover sizes changing from year to year and from style to style. Our best advice is to shop alone and give yourself at least an hour. After trying on a number of suits in various styles, narrow your selection down to two or three swimsuits and ask the clerk for advice.

Q: It’s my thighs that really bother me in a swimsuit. Is there a way to minimize the appearance of my thighs with the cut of my bathing suit?

Liz:

Try a one-piece suit with an all-around skirt or sheath (skirt across the front), or a boyleg style that extends slightly down the thigh.

Saying “I Do” to a Magical Day and a Happier Life By Dr Kelvin Mah

I

really enjoy going to weddings. What’s not to like? It’s a chance to see so many people, from toddlers to seniors, get all dressed up in their very best and come together to celebrate an extraordinary event. Yet there’s something I enjoy even more than going to weddings: the opportunity to help a bride-to-be look and feel her absolute best on that unforgettable day. Like so many of my patients who are planning to march down the aisle, Nicole was both excited about her big day, and anxious about the state of her smile. With the wedding set to take place in her native China this fall, she knew there would be plenty of pre-wedding social events to look forward to – and countless photos, too. She didn’t want her uneasy smile to take away from what is supposed to be an enchanting, unforgettable experience with friends and relatives. While Nicole might have expected me to launch into a “menu of dental treatments” (complete with the required jargon that so many dentists love using), instead I did something that won’t surprise any of my regular readers. I asked her my favourite question in the world, one that she’d never heard from a dentist before: “What do you want?” I listened to Nicole’s response – what she said, how she said it, and especially what she didn’t say – and learned that discoloration and two chipped front teeth had bothered her for years, and that kind of “negative energy” was inconsistent with her role as a design assistant in the fashion industry. At the same time, Nicole didn’t want the “Hollywood glam” look. Rather, she wanted her smile to subtly complement who she was as a person, to express her individuality and enhance her personality. In a sense, she wanted to achieve a very delicate and precise harmony with her smile, one that would inspire inner confidence and would encourage her to smile more and express the happy, dynamic and caring person she truly is, and always has been. Nicole also told me something that I’ve heard from many patients: her home “whitening strip” experience had been a dismal waste of time and money, and was also unexpectedly painful. And even if it had

worked (which it clearly hadn’t), she’d still be self-conscious and unhappy about her chipped teeth. After learning about Nicole’s unique personality, hopes and dreams, we then explored various Mini Smile Makeover possibilities that would be minimally invasive and would create a flawless natural look that would last far beyond her wedding day. We agreed that the best solution would be to whiten Nicole’s teeth with the proprietary Zoom! In-Office Whitening System, allowing me to whiten her teeth in a single visit. The new whitening system, which has recently been improved, allows us to achieve amazing results with minimal sensitivity. Home whitening products just cannot compare. To make her hated chipped front teeth a thing of the past, we agreed that I would apply ultra-thin layers of bonding, precisely set, coloured and polished, that would be completely indistinguishable from her natural teeth in every way. Within a few visits, Nicole became the proud new owner of a beautifully natural, balanced and harmonious smile that any bride would wish for. Like most of my Mini Smile Makeovers, Nicole was shocked that we accomplished this in such a short time. And still, that was just half of the picture. The other half was that that the shadow of discomfort and distraction that had followed Nicole around for decades had lifted, and revealed a beautiful glow that I knew had always been hidden there, and could now be proudly apparent on her wedding day.

The Ancient Art of Auricular Acupuncture By Rebecca Stephens, B.Sc., R.Ac., R.TCM.P.

H

ave you ever experienced a light touch on your ear and felt the sensation travel down your spine, or even to your toes? The ear has a plethora of nerves, and the mysterious connection between the ear and the rest of the body has been the subject of intrigue since ancient times. Stemming from this curiosity, a system was developed in which specific points on the outer ear (auricle) were identified and treated to address whole-body conditions, and auricular acupuncture was born. Despite a long period of fading into the background of history, it has re-emerged to find a place in many important medical applications today. The earliest use of auricular acupuncture dates back to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese. It is most often recognized as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which is where it can be found in modern practice. French physician and acupuncturist Dr. Paul Nogier is largely credited for reviving the practice in 1957. Studies that followed found auricular acupuncture to be of immense value in the treatment of pain, trauma and mental health issues. Consequently, stand-alone ear point protocols were developed for specific applications, such as acupuncture anesthesia, acupuncture detox, and “battlefield acupuncture.” Successful use of auricular acupuncture-induced anesthesia has been recorded in surgical procedures. This potential has led to acupuncture use being considered for lowering both the need for narcotic drugs, and cost of procedure. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) might lay claim to the most famous use of ear acupuncture, currently considered to be one of the most effective forms of therapy in the treatment of addictions. The “NADA protocol” was developed in the 1970s in a South Bronx medical facility as a drug-free alterative to methadone therapy, and is now taught to health professionals around the world as a tool to treat many types of addictions. Since first use of the term in 2001, “battlefield acupuncture” has been making waves in the US mili-

tary. Medical personnel are using a five-ear-point protocol for cases of acute trauma, chronic pain and PTSD. The most recent noteworthy development in auricular acupuncture is its integration alongside western medicine in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedures. Acupuncture performed immediately before and after embryo transfer in IVF procedures has been clinically shown to significantly improve success rates, and ear points are an integral part of the treatment. In Vancouver, this service is performed onsite at local fertility clinics by trained members of the IVF Acupuncture Group (ivfacupuncture.org). The greatest benefits of auricular acupuncture are that it is simple, inexpensive and practical. Because the therapy is confined to a small part of the body, it can be performed with the patient in various positions, or even moving around to a small degree. That means it can be used where other forms of acupuncture may be difficult, like at a busy walk-in community centre, or in a patient with compromised motor control. Minimal and inexpensive equipment is involved, with easy set-up and high portability. These features also make it easy to incorporate into western medicine settings. Auricular acupuncture is a drug-free way to address symptoms, lessening considerations for drug interactions, and potentially our overall health care costs. Rebecca is a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac.), Herbalist and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (R.TCM.P.) with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia. She graduated as Class Valedictorian from PCU College of Holistic Medicine (Burnaby, BC), and received a Doctor of Chinese Medicine degree from Pacific Rim College (Victoria, BC). She also holds an Honours B.Sc.(Agr.) from Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS). Rebecca’s practice focuses on musculoskeletal pain and injury, stress and anxiety, addictions, gastrointestinal issues and women’s health issues, using the whole-body approach of Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, in which every problem has the potential to be addressed. Focused on Fat Reduction By Dr Shehla Ebrahim, MD

W

omen come in different shapes and sizes, and this diversity makes us beautiful and sexy in our own ways. While we all try our best to maintain a healthy lifestyle, there are always areas of our bodies that are resistant and resilient to diet and exercise. This is called “stubborn fat.” Typical areas include those annoying muffin tops, love handles, back fat, belly pooch, inner thigh bulges and outer-thigh saddle bags. What can we do about these problem areas? We assume we have two options: live with them or think surgery. Neither is cool by us. And that’s exactly why Ambleside Dermedics has invested in a revolutionary nonDr. Shehla Ebrahim invasive fat reduction technology called CoolSculpting. Only CoolSculpting targets the fat cells alone, eliminating them in an easy, non-intrusive fashion that exercise and diet can’t achieve as quickly or as effectively.

The Cool Solution is the More Natural Solution

Procedures that use laser, sonic waves and surgery to remove fat can actually destroy other tissues in the process by burning, shattering or extracting non-fat cells. That is why Coolsculpting is a safe and natural solution. At Ambleside Dermedics, the science and safety are the most important aspects behind any technology we choose to incorporate. Developed by Harvard scientists, this FDA-cleared and patented procedure uses a targeted cooling process called cryolipolysis that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. The technology behind CoolSculpting was inspired by the observation that children who habitually sucked on popsicles developed cheek dimples, presumably due to loss of fatty tissue from their cheeks. Harvard Medical School researchers then developed the patented and FDA-cleared cooling technique called cryolipolysis which is the founda-

tion of the CoolSculpting technology. The process of cryolipolsis kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen and the skin cells remain healthy. Once crystallized, the fat cells go through a process called apoptosis where they die and are naturally eliminated from your body through the lymphatic system, where the material is processed as waste. The results are a 20 to 30 percent reduction in fat in the treated areas. The significance of its effectiveness gives the technology a powerful reputation, making it one of our most asked about cosmetic procedures. We have seen patients who have tried relentlessly to lose certain areas of fat, and recommend this liposuction alternative that requires no knives, no suction hoses, no needles and, therefore, leaves no scars.

Minimal Downtime and Lasting Results

There is no recovery time with CoolScultping, although patients may experience mild discomfort for up to 10 minutes following the treatment. Unlike a lot of other procedures, CoolSculpting takes very little time and is pretty simple to fit into your daily life. Each treatment lasts one hour – the same time you might spend at the gym – so you can easily fit your appointment into a lunch break. After one visit, you’ll typically see a noticeable reduction of fat. About two to four months after, patients will begin to notice significant results in the treated areas. In addition to undergoing CoolSculpting, Gabriele Brencher, Ambleside Dermedics Weight Management Specialist, stresses the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and may recommend a weight loss program to help you achieve optimal results. The aim is to make you look good, feel great and increase your confidence.

2011 nominee for best doctor on the North Shore, Dr Shehla Ebrahim is the owner and leading physician of Ambleside Dermedics. She has a diploma in dermatology and is a certificant and fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. In practice as a family physician since 1992, Dr Ebrahim turned to aesthetic medicine in response to her patients’ growing demand for cosmetic procedures. Her greatest areas of interest include laser- and light-based therapies for several dermatological conditions, including rosacea, acne, acne scars and anti-aging as well as women’s health, osteoporosis, menopause and weight management. Dr Ebrahim has two thriving medical spas on the North Shore that have earned a wide variety of accolades. www.amblesidedermedics.com

Summer

Sun

Safety Tips By Dr Justin Piasecki, MD

W

ith summer fast approaching, I’m often asked about the balance between sun safety and fun. The answer, of course, is “yes.” Kidding aside, let’s first set the record straight regarding the sun. It is a myth that UV exposure is justifiable in the name of vitamin D metabolism. How much sunlight do we really need daily? The minimum direct sunshine exposure required for appropriate and Dr Justin Piasecki, MD healthy vitamin D metabolism is 15 minutes over the surface area of a person’s hands. The incidence of skin cancer is on the rise, and cumulative sun exposure is the biggest risk factor. Basal and squamous cell carcinoma are now more common than all other cancers combined. They can be life threatening, but more commonly quality of life threatening: destroying and deforming if left untreated. If you have fair skin and live long enough, you are likely to get one of these cancer types. So should we dive behind a bush every time we see the sun? As an expert in the field, I say no. Most would argue – and I agree – that we should live life to the fullest and enjoy outdoor activities. Indeed, that is where many of our fondest experiences and memories are formed. But be smart. Be proactive. Be informed. Enjoy life outdoors and be sunsensical at the same time. That means moderation and common sense. Follow the five sun sense lessons below to enjoy outdoor living without damaging your health.

Lesson #1: No Tanning Beds

Tanning beds are to skin cancer what cigarettes are to lung cancer. A recent study estimated that regular use of tanning beds increased the risk of melanoma by 75 percent. Tanning beds emit radiation, with varying

degrees of UVA and UVB depending on the machine. Both forms of radiation cause skin cancer and premature aging. Avoid them.

Lesson #2: Sunscreen

Put sunscreen on your body every day. Don’t forget your scalp and under your bathing suit. The best sunscreen out there is the one you will actually wear. If it is too expensive, too greasy or too fragrant, you won’t wear it. There is no evidence that one brand or product is better at preventing skin cancer than another. My recommendation is to apply an SPF of 30 or greater every day, and reapply every two to three hours if you are outdoors as UV radiation will destroy the sunscreen on your skin over time. If you get in the water, assume the sunscreen is gone from your skin and reapply. If you can’t reapply to your whole body, at least reapply to your face and hands, the areas most commonly affected by skin cancer and most cosmetically sensitive. Remember that the SPF of regular clothing is only five or six. Are chemicals in sunscreens dangerous? Parabens, triethanolamine and

36 vancouver Issue 11 36 || fresh fresh vancouver Issue 18

PABA have all been shown in mice studies to have some adverse effects. However, the risk in humans is unclear. There is inherent risk to living. Every time we get in a car and drive to the supermarket, we could get in a fatal accident. The risk of direct and cumulative UV exposure far outweighs the unclear and very small risks associated with the use of any sunscreen. Please wear it.

Lesson #3: Early Detection

Examine your own skin every month on your birth day for an extra 10 minutes in the shower. A wound that bleeds with minimal trauma (like toweling), a wound that won’t heal over the course of a few weeks, or a growing skin lesion are all signs of skin cancer. Additionally, any brown or black spot on the skin that is changing in shape, colour or size is a red flag. Change is the most sensitive indicator of something you should have checked. At least once a year, have your skin checked by a primary care doctor or dermatologist.

Make sure your doctors are trained and certified as above and you will get great care.

Lesson #5: Tan Without Cancer

You can be sun safe and still look great! For a variety of reasons, our society sees pale skin as less attractive than a tan. As a board certified plastic and cosmetic surgeon, I understand and appreciate the importance of cosmetics and looking attractive, youthful and rejuvenated. But the reward has to justify the risk. Radiating your skin to look temporarily better is not worth the increased risk of cancer that prolonged and repeated intense sun exposure carries. Prior to the mid-1990s, I simply recommended living with a paler complexion. Today, there are several very effective and very safe spray tanning options on the market that do not increase the risk of cancer, and also give fantastic cosmetic results.

Lesson #4: Treat it Right

If diagnosed with skin cancer, don’t cut corners on treatment. Treat it right the first time. Be your own advocate, ask questions, and make sure you are treated by an expert in the removal of skin cancer and an expert in reconstructive surgery. As the only doc worldwide certified in skin cancer removal and board certified in both plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery, I founded Plastic Micrographic Surgery, which is a one-stop shop for both removal and any reconstructive/cosmetic needs.

Dr Justin Piasecki, MD, received a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He completed a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin, and a Mohs surgery fellowship at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Piasecki is also the only member of the American College of Mohs Surgery who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. harborplasticsurgerycenter.com
