I
’ve always had an appreciation for experts. No matter how many answers seem to be at our fingertips – google is a verb after all – would any of us make an important decision about our health or plastic surgery without consulting a physician we trust? That’s why I love our “Ask the Expert” series. So, for this issue, we’ve rounded up a full panel, from urologists to plastic surgeons, in a special package with answers to your most asked questions. Another expert in our midst is Jodie Emery, a political activist and the current face of the marijuana legalization movement. It’s an issue that has long been debated here in British Columbia, but there’s been a shift in mindset with recent laws being passed in the United States. Do we really know all we need to in order to have an informed opinion? At just 28, Emery has recently stepped into the spotlight of the issue, so we sat down with her to get the inside scoop from the woman breaking a new glass ceiling in drug reform. I hope this issue will give you some interesting summer reading as you enjoy these couple months of sunshine in our city. It’s the perfect time to pull ourselves out of the daily grind, sit poolside and find a moment to read up on things we’ve always wondered about. Plus, as always, we’ve included some great beauty tips that will help you look and feel fantastic at the same time. Enjoy the summer, everyone!

Blood By Dr Lydia Waterson
P
latelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy—also known as the “Vampire facelift” (a term trademarked by Alabama cosmetic surgeon Charles Runles and made famous by celebrities)—is a treatment used to help restore lost volume and rejuvenate the skin using the patient’s own blood. Over the past eight years, PRP has been used by surgeons to speed up soft tissue healing from sport injuries, treat burn victims and help patients with severe diabetic ulcers. As it turns out, this autologous (from your own body) regenerative medicine also has cosmetic benefits and works particularly well in areas that haven’t had success with standard treatments or fillers. Studies have revealed that PRP therapy can treat the crepe-like appearance of aging skin on the neck and hands, an area renowned for being extremely difficult to treat. Clinical trials of at the Face Today Medical Clinic in NSW, Australia also saw dramatic improvements around the eyes and mouth where depleted collagen and elastin manifest in the formation of deep lines, wrinkles and dehydrated skin. PRP therapy is now being applied, and applauded, for cosmetic rejuvenation of the face, neck and hands. Dr. Matarasso, Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City calls PRP “cutting edge rejuvenation” in a quick procedure. “PRP is the ultimate biological skin rejuvenation treatment,” says Dr. Yien Yeo, a cosmetic physician from Perth, Australia.

Blood platelets play a key role in repairing damaged blood vessels and cells in the body, as well as helping to stop bleeding. They contain “growth factors” that activate and rejuvenate our cells. Unlike fillers that use synthetic substances to restore the lost volume, PRP uses your own natural biology to address skin defects and volume loss by triggering the production of new cells, new blood vessels and connective tissue repair. As a result, the production of new collagen and hyaluronic acid is stimulated, which improves skin health and creates a more vibrant, youthful appearance. All age groups can benefit from PRP, while the number of treatments necessary will depend on the level of damage. It is, however, not suited for patients with chronic disease, cancer and poor platelet counts. Smoking, bad eating habits and other lifestyle factors should be taken into consideration so be sure to consult with your health practitioner on whether the treatment will benefit you. The healthier you are, the healthier your platelet rich plasma is, which directly translates into more effective results. The safety of this treatment has been studied in more than 25,000 medical papers worldwide and, to date, no serious adverse side effects have been reported. Because the injectable is made from the patient’s own blood, there is minimal risk for rejection, infection or allergic reaction.

The basic PRP therapy will consist of three 20-minute treatments, four to six weeks apart. First, your medical practitioner will withdraw one to two vials of blood from your arm. Then, it is spun down in a centrifuge at a pre-calculated speed to extract the most viable fibrin and platelets. The collected serum, rich in restorative platelets, is injected into the areas of concern. Patients typically see improvement in three weeks as the skin starts to feel hydrated with a finer texture. The skin continues to improve over time as PRP builds tissue. Results last 12 to 18 months—even longer by implementing maintenance treatments. Optimal results will be achieved when used in combination with fillers, Botox, laser resurfacing or facial surgery. PRP is one of the latest advancements following a steady 15-year trend of patients seeking less invasive and safer procedures for facial rejuvenation. It is expected that the growth factor based treatments will only gain momentum and popularity in the future. Internationally accredited since 1986, Dr Lydia Waterson MD practices at The Coliseum MediSpa in West Vancouver where she specializes in aesthetic medicine and treatments. www.thecoliseum.ca

From your hygienist
AT S mile C i t y Square Dental By Dr Kelvin P. Mah
O
ur mission at Smile City Square Dental is to “enrich lives, one smile at a time”. In my view the only way to achieve this level of sustained excellence is by having great people at every position. So who are these “great people”? They’re the people who strive to add something special to everything they do. They embrace the opportunity to make a positive difference – not just once in a while, but many times a day. It’s in this light that I’d like to introduce you to Jessica, one of the amazing dental hygienists at Smile City Square Dental, and a certified “great person”! While there are many qualities that make Jessica great – not the least of which are her exceptional skills and depth of knowledge – a characteristic that really sets her apart is how she invests quality time every day to answer questions from current and prospective patients in our office, over the phone, and via Facebook. She believes that there’s no such thing as a bad question and looks forward to every interaction because it’s a chance to make a difference. As such, I have asked our resident expert to weigh in on the questions she receives often. Here are Jessica’s top three most frequently asked questions.
Q:
I often have a bad taste in my mouth and sometimes notice that I have bad breath as well. Plus, my gums bleed easily, and look red and shiny. What is happening and what can I do about it?
A:
These symptoms are often the first signs of gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums. It’s likely caused by plaque buildup along the gum line, but it can also be due to smoking, a weakened immune system and diseases such as diabetes. Gingivitis is very common. Sixteen million Canadians – or one out of every two people – have it to some degree. The great news is that it’s often reversible. Start by ensuring that you brush your teeth twice a day with an electric toothbrush (recommended) or a manual soft toothbrush. Also remember to floss daily and rinse with an anti-plaque mouthwash. It also helps to gently scrape the tongue once a day and be sure to visit your dentist and dental hygienist for regular cleaning and checkups.
Q:
I try to adhere to a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a good diet. I’ve recently heard that oral health can impact my overall health. Is this true?
13
|
A:
In a word, yes! Poor oral hygiene or infrequent dental cleanings can lead to periodontal disease (a.k.a. gum disease). The first signs of periodontal disease include bleeding, swelling, discoloration (red or purple) of the gums, tenderness or pain, and persistent bad breath or bad taste. You’re also at greater risk of developing periodontal disease if you have diabetes. If you notice any of these symptoms, then it’s wise to visit your dentist right away. What may seem minor to you may in fact be early warning signs that you definitely want to heed. For example, periodontal disease can increase your risk of developing heart disease by 19%. If you’re pregnant, it can also put you at risk for a Pre Term Low Birth Weight (PTLBW) delivery.
Q:
I’ve tried over-the-counter whitening products, but haven’t been very happy with the results. Is there something else I can try that will give me a whiter smile?
A:
These days there are many solutions that will not just give you a brighter and whiter smile, but will make that happen more quickly and comfortably than you imagine. Many dental practices (including ours) provide both in-office and take home whitening solutions. Plus, when you work with your dentist to choose the right product and method, a customized program can be set up to achieve the optimal level of whitening that is right for your unique, beautiful smile. Do you have a question for Jessica about your dental health or wellness? Are you curious about smile makeovers or any other treatment? Ask Jessica via our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SmileCitySquare. We’d love to hear from you. Dr Kelvin P. Mah is driven to “enrich lives, one smile at a time.” He believes in helping people – not merely treating problems – and takes a dedicated, personal interest in the health, wellness and happiness of each individual patient. His award-winning Smile City Square Dental practice reflects an organic and zen-like atmosphere of warmth and relaxation. He is also a graduate of UBC’s prestigious Dental School and is an instructor with the Frontier Institute, which offers postgraduate programs in advanced cosmetic dentistry. Ask the
Plastic Surgeon: Dr Mathew Mosher
Q:
I’ve decided to get breast implants, but I’m really having a hard time deciding about the size. Is there a realistic way to see what I would look like with different-sized implants?
A:
Choosing the size of breast implants can be stressful. A number of factors must be considered to achieve the best results, including the shape and profile of implants, in addition to the size. A careful assessment of your tissue limitations and your goals is essential. Fortunately, there are a number of tools that can help give you a sneak preview of your breast augmentation results. At my metro Vancouver practice, I offer the revolutionary Vectra® 3-D imaging system, which can help take much of the guesswork out of the decision. I can adjust the size and shape of the implants to offer patients a fairly realistic view of how they will look after the procedure. Although a computer can’t predict exactly how an individual will look, the Vectra® system is an excellent way to get a glimpse of the future.
Q:
I’m interested in the mommy makeover. I know the procedure includes a tummy tuck and breast lift, but is it possible to have those surgeries performed at different times?
A:
That’s a great question. The mommy makeover is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. Many women come to my practice frustrated after childbirth because their bodies never regain their pre-pregnancy shape, no matter how much they diet and exercise. It’s important to understand that mommy makeovers — despite the cute name — are surgical procedures involving general anesthesia. If a woman is getting a breast lift combined with augmentation and a tummy tuck, it can be a fairly lengthy procedure. In some cases, it’s necessary to do the surgeries at separate times, which is called a “staged” mommy makeover. Although the expense may be a little more, a patient’s safety is always the top priority. Make sure you discuss this option with your Royal College certified plastic surgeon.
Q:
After much consideration, I’m finally going to get breast augmentation surgery. I’ve heard about “gummy bear” implants. They sound cute, but what are they and do you recommend them?
14
|
A:
A recent study showed more than 95 % of women who get breast implants are satisfied with the results. I’d say the development of more highly cohesive silicone gel or “gummy bear” implants is adding to that satisfaction rate. Cohesive gel implants got their nickname because they retain their shape even when cut in half, like a gummy bear. That means the risks of leaking associated with earlier less cohesive silicone gel implants has largely been eliminated. There are other advantages, too. These implants come in both a round and teardrop shape, resist wrinkling and retain their shape much longer than saline or earlier silicone gel-filled implants. Also, years of studies show there is a lower risk of complications and revisional surgery when compared to saline or earlier silicone gel breast implants.
Q:
As a man I still find it a little strange to think about skincare, but I look so old in my social media pictures. Do many men come to your Medspa?
A:
There’s little question that Facebook, Skype, teleconferences, and other social media have increased awareness among both men and women about their physical appearances. For many men, thinking about wrinkles, their complexion, and a bit of flab is a new phenomenon. At my YES Medspa in metro Vancouver, I offer skin rejuvenation and nonsurgical fat reduction procedures that require virtually no downtime. For example, UltraShape® treatments can fine-tune areas of your body with stubborn fat deposits without having to miss work. Furthermore, more and more men are realizing that a routine at-home skincare regimen with quality products available at our Medspa is a simple and important part of your overall healthcare plan. Healthy skin helps keep you looking refreshed and younger.

Ask the Urologist:
Dr Kelly Casperson
Q: A:
Q:
What is female urology?
I have problems with my bladder but am too embarrassed to tell anyone.
Female urology specifically deals with bladder control problems and prolapse, pelvic pain, and bladder infections. Women have other urology concerns too, such as kidney stones.
Q: A:
Is incontinence is a normal part of aging?
Incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine for any reason and there are two main kinds. Stress incontinence is the loss of urine with an increase in abdominal pressure, like sneezing, coughing or laughing. Urge incontinence is a sudden strong sensation to urinate when you don’t want to, like when a woman hears water running. Although incontinence is more common as we age, it is not considered “normal” aging and, usually, there is a solution.
Q:
I have heard of medications and surgery for incontinence, but I’m interested in another approach. Are there any newer treatment options?
A:
The science behind treatments has been rapidly developing and there are more options than ever. Women have several non-invasive treatments available, such as home biofeedback and pelvic muscle training, bladder muscle neuromodulation with tibial nerve stimulation, and now, even Botox injections can help overactive bladders.
16
|
A:
I have spent years learning to help women with their bladders and pelvic health. I hear your stories every day and understand how difficult it can be to talk about. Writing down your concerns and bladder habits before a visit to the doctor can help you focus on your specific concerns in a comfortable and objective manner.
Q: A:
I keep getting kidney stones, what can I do?
More data is coming out that shows how important lifestyle is for kidney stone prevention. Staying well hydrated while eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in salt and animal protein can help protect your kidneys from stones. Personalized metabolic labs are available to directly target your specific risks for stones.
Dr Kelly Casperson went to college and medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed her surgical internship and urological residency at the University of Colorado. In addition to her general urology training, she has training in the newest da Vinci robotic technology, pediatric urology and female urology. To book an appointment with Dr Casperson, contact Bellingham Urology Specialists, PLLC, 360-671-9197 or visit www.bellinghamurologyspecialists.com.

Naturopath: Dr Allana Polo
Q:
I’m tired of suffering from seasonal allergies! Are there any natural alternatives to help relieve the symptoms?
A:
Allergies plague millions of people and many only get marginal relief from prescription or over-the-counter drugs while also dealing with a risk of negative side effects. Natural remedies, however, often have fewer side effects and can help combat allergic reactions. Quercetin is a natural, plant-derived compound that assists in stabilizing mast cells and inhibits the production of histamine, the culprit of allergy symptoms. Stinging nettle is another natural antihistamine. It mimics the behaviour of many of the drugs used to treat allergies, but without unwanted side effects such as dry mouth and drowsiness. You can also incorporate allergy-fighting foods into your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, help fight inflammation. Studies show that people who regularly ate foods rich in Omega-3 were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who had less in their diet. Cold-water fish, grass-fed meat, eggs, walnuts and flaxseed oil are all great sources.
Q:
What is the difference between a food allergy, sensitivity and intolerance?
A:
Food allergies are caused by an immune system reaction that releases IgE (Immunoglobulin E) antibodies and chemicals like histamines. Usually, there is an immediate reaction such as hives, swelling or anaphylaxis. Food allergies are the easiest to diagnose and can be determined by an allergist with a skin prick or blood test. Food sensitivities and intolerances are often harder to diagnose as the symptoms range from gas and bloating to mental fog and fatigue. With food intolerance, the body is lacking a particular enzyme, which leads to impaired digestion. Food sensitivities, much like allergies, cause an immune reaction in the body. However, this time it releases IgG (Immunoglobulin G) antibodies. IgG reactions are much slower to develop—up to 72 hours—and can last for days. Testing for IgG food sensitivities can be performed in a naturopath clinic with a simple finger prick to obtain a small sample of blood.
in sugars and carbohydrates can all cause this. Lean proteins and fiber are a powerful combination that allows you to stay full and energized throughout the day. A protein-packed breakfast is important to set you up for the day, while eating a well-balanced lunch full of good fats, lean protein and fiber will allow you to cruise through the day. Avoid heavy lunches filled with processed and refined carbohydrates. Try a protein smoothie in the morning, some nuts or veggies and hummus as a snack, and some avocados in your protein-packed salad for lunch. If you have a hankering for something sweet, opt for an apple, orange or banana. Your body will thank you. Finally, keep an eye out for the words dextrose, corn sugar, fructose and high fructose corn syrup on labels as they will only cause your blood sugar to spike, leaving you with that dreaded afternoon crash.
Q:
I have been struggling to lose these last 15 pounds. It seems like no matter how much I exercise or how well I eat, the scale doesn’t seem to budge. What’s going on?
A:
The approach we most often hear is the one most frustrating! “Eat less and exercise more.” I firmly believe this is simply not the answer. We are starting to learn how hormonal imbalances may be the reasons why your efforts to drop weight are backfiring. Thyroid and sex hormone imbalances, as well as adrenal fatigue, may all play a part. Unless you do something about balancing these hormones, those last few pounds will be there for the long haul. Cortisol, the stress hormone, not only prevents people from losing weight, but also actually contributes to the ‘’spare tire” around your waist! There are many natural steps that can make a big difference, including bio-identical hormones or thyroid support. But in the meantime, the easy answer is sleep. Lack of sleep causes insulin resistance, meaning that every type of food you eat —especially carbs — will likely be stored as fat. Getting more rest promotes growth hormones, which can improve insulin sensitivity and help with weight loss.
Q:
I usually crash between 2-3pm and start craving sugar or salt. How can I stay energized throughout the day?

Your crash is due to a low blood sugar level. Waiting too long between meals, skipping meals altogether, or eating a large meal rich

Ask the
Pharmacist:
Bob Mehr, R.Ph Q
: How can Pure Pharmacies help women who are taking BioIdentical Hormone Therapies?
A:
Working closely with her medical or naturopathic doctor, pharmacists at Pure Pharmacy can help a woman start and maintain a hormone replacement regimen that brings her hormones back into balance and closely mimics what her body has been doing naturally for years. It is extremely important for the hormones to be of the highest quality using the most effective cream bases and accurate measurement and formulations for effective results. With a healthcare provider’s prescription, the pharmacist at Pure can prepare hormones in a variety of strengths and dosage forms, including: • Capsules • Topical or vaginal creams, gels • Vaginal suppositories • Sublingual drops or troches Once the therapy has begun, the pharmacist will continue to work with the woman and her prescriber to make sure the compounded hormones are working correctly, adjusting the dosage if necessary, and ensuring that the medication is just right for her body.
Q:
How can Pure Integrative Pharmacy help patients who are taking thyroid medications?
A:
The conventional treatment for hypothyroidism starts a patient off on the hormone levothyroxine (T4). Common brand names are Synthroid and Eltroxin). T4 is one of two types of hormones produced by the thyroid gland. For many patients this is an effective treatment, but it assumes that T4 is efficiently being converted to the active form of the thyroid hormone, liothyronine (T3). T3 is the form of the hormone that exerts its effects on the body’s cells. Pure Integrative Pharmacies have innovative treatment options for addressing thyroid issues, particularly when a patient has not responded well to conventional approaches. Each compounded medication can be customized to a strength that perfectly suits a patient’s profile. Possible treatments include: • Compounded sustained-release T3/T4 capsules • Compounded dessicated thyroid capsules (which contain T3 and T4 in roughly physiologic ratios) For patients taking any type of thyroid medication, it is important to know that these drugs interact with most foods, drugs and supplements. Therefore, it is important to take thyroid capsules one hour before any food or drug, and four hours before any supplement containing minerals like iron, calcium or zinc.

Q:
What are some of your recommended supplement options for patients with iron deficiency?
A:
The cause of your iron deficiency should always be investigated. In the majority of cases, the cause is poor nutrition. In some cases, however, there can be something else interfering with iron absorption or causing increased iron loss from the body. There are a number of commercially available iron supplements on the market (easily obtained without a prescription from any pharmacy), but the problems with these products are that they can cause stomach irritation and constipation which are two major side effects of iron. Due to these side effects, many women do not like taking iron. The good news is that at Pure Pharmacies, our compounding pharmacists can formulate a special iron called “Bob’s Iron Formula” which has been compounded since 1999 as a result of many requests from doctors who were looking for a superior iron supplement for their patients without the side effects.
Q:
What can Pure Integrative Pharmacy do in the area of pain management?
A:
Pharmacists at Pure Pharmacies can make many different kinds of medications to help with pain management. They can make an oral drug last longer (with sustained release), or customize its strength, and they can formulate medicated, sugar-free lollipops. They can also add specific drugs to a highly specialized topical base developed by our compounding pharmacists. This penetrating cream makes it possible to apply the drugs directly to the skin at a particular site where the pain is, offering an alternative to an oral dosage form. Examples of drugs that can be added to the this cream base include: • Anti-inflammatories (such as ibuprofen) • Topical anesthetics (such as lidocaine) • Muscle relaxants (such as magnesium, which is very effective and natural and does not require a prescription)

odie Emery is a surprise. The minute you meet her, the Green Party candidate and editor of Cannabis Culture Magazine with a Julia Roberts smile turns any attempt at a BC Bud stereotype on its head. She speaks just as passionately about drug reform and government budgets as she does about traditional marriage roles and her husband. She is animated and inquisitive, and has conservative chic down to a tee. A prolific activist for the decriminalization of marijuana, a hot-button topic in politics across North America, you may not expect or even notice the Coach purse on her shoulder, but it’s representative of the evolving landscape of the issue. “My business card just has my name and my number,” Emery laughs. “It has to be good for potheads or politicians. I’m meeting the former Prime Minister of Canada; then I’m talking to Tommy Chong.” This is the new face of the marijuana legalization movement. Emery’s first step into notoriety was at the side of her now husband, Marc Emery, the infamous Canadian marijuana activist, known as the “Prince of Pot”, currently serving a five-year prison sentence in the U.S. for selling marijuana seeds across the border. The couple has worked together and campaigned for legalization since 2004 and their romantic relationship garnered her the nickname “Princess of Pot”. After he was extradited in 2010, the beginning of an emotional upheaval, she took on his responsibilities alongside her own. At just 28 years old, Emery runs the Cannabis Culture Headquarters with 24 employees, heads up Pot.tv, continues her bid for office as a Green Party candidate in BC, has speaking engagements at such conferences as Moses Znaimer’s infamous ideacity, and continues the campaign for legalization. Jodie Emery sat down with Fresh to talk about her partner, political activism and being forced out from behind the scenes and into her own.
Stepping into the Spotlight
“When Marc left, I had to fill his shoes so a lot of people said,“Ok what’s going to happen? Here’s his young wife.” People make some assumptions I suppose and think maybe I’m a bimbo or a trophy wife. I’ve had some mean things said about me, but I had to prove over the years that I’m not that way. I’ve never been a party girl. People now know that I’m dedicated to Marc and I’m dedicated to this movement.”
Single Life as a Married Woman
“It’s kind of strange, because with the last couple years, with him being gone, we have grown apart in some ways. In my role as his wife we were together all the time. We worked together, we lived together, never separated. So with him gone I’ve had to become the business owner, but I’ve also lost the responsibilities of being a wife. There are definitely the obligations of a prisoner’s wife, but in many ways a lot of the traditional stuff is gone. He used to make dinner for us all the time, so I’m learning how to make vegetables. In many ways I’m living a single woman’s life. So when he comes back, life is going to change again. We’re going to enter a new phase where I’m going to want to be with him all the time like before, but in many ways, I want to maintain my individual identity.”
Running for Office
“The idea of running with the Green Party was great. They support marijuana legalization and environmental justice! I love it. I ran with them
Discovering a Movement
“The very first marijuana rally I went to was in Kamloops when the BC Marijuana Party Canna-Bus came through town. I went down with my friends and held signs, and smoked in public. I knew of Marc Emery, so I joined CannabisCulture.com on the forum. Marc would always talk with anyone anywhere about cannabis questions or drug policy or whatever you wanted to know – he was available. So we started communicating that way. My parents wanted me to be able to get into university, get my degree and become prime minister and all that [laughs]. I ended up experimenting with other substances and just went a different way. I was accepted into university, but I always felt like I wanted to learn through life instead of learning through school and then entering life.”
Marc Emery
“Marc is somebody who cares more about a greater movement than his own needs. He’s such an incredible person. And I call him a hero because he saves lives. He probably saved my life. When I first moved to Vancouver in 2004, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was kind of aimless and could have gotten into some trouble. I have to credit him for that. He said, “Be an activist, be my assistant, come learn from me and be my protégée.” And I’ve just met so many people—men, women, all ages, all kinds - who have said he changed their life. He’s just such a powerful, incredible person, and unlike anyone I’ve ever met.”
Falling in Love
“Marc used to drive me crazy. A lot of the things he said were so outrageous. Marc will tell you how it is, but I will explain things to you to help you realize that’s the way that it is. But I’ve learned so much from him over the years. I want everyone to like me, and if you don’t, I want to fix it, so that’s my style. Where Marc, he really couldn’t care less if you like him. In fact, he almost wants you to not like him, just because he’s that type of guy. So, he just drove me crazy all the time. But I ended up falling in love with that because when you have that attitude, you’re carefree and able to just say what you believe to be true.”

that’s where the momentum is changing. They know that it’s not about putting people away for something dangerous; they can see through it. And now that they have people who aren’t stoners or potheads or hippies supporting legalization, they feel comfortable enough to agree without being stereotyped or pigeon-holed as some sort of stoner supporter.”
A New Platform
“I can go to Seattle Hempfest or 4/20, meet my fans and supporters and it’s all good. But when I go somewhere like ideacity where it’s the meeting of the minds – intellectuals, business people and influential movers and shakers it’s different. I’m so nervous and all I want to do is share my message. I had non-stop positive feedback from people who were moved emotionally and impressed and it wasn’t just empty flattery. That was very validating, because it’s one thing to go to 4/20 and stand on that stage and say “I’m Marc Emery’s wife” and everybody goes “Woo hoo!” That’s easy. But when I go on CTV National or to ideacity, it’s a different environment. I didn’t go to university. I don’t network. I don’t feel in-theknow or hip or cool or anything. I’m just a marijuana activist.”
A Woman’s World
“I took everything that Marc taught me and I present it, probably, in a more feminine fashion. More warm, trying to think of people’s feelings and their emotions. I’m a very logical and rational person, but I understand emotions are very powerful. You need to learn how to deal with people to get the best out of them, or get the best for them. Being a woman, I’ve been able to do that. A lot of people have told me that I’m able to reach an audience in a different way and it’s just a different way of presenting the message.”
Her Image
“I’ve never been one to show off my body or anything, but the marijuana movement has a lot of exploitive use of women and their looks. But when it comes to the marijuana industry, a lot of people are upset. They’re offended by the way women are represented in the marijuana movement, simply as centerfolds, and hitting bongs, and looking sexy at trade shows, and they’re looking for a woman who can counter that. I don’t mind dressing in a more conservative tasteful way. I feel comfortable being that way and looking professional to try and dispel the stereotype. I’m grateful that who I am seems to fit well with the role I’ve been given.”
Dress / Oscar de la Renta / Holt Renfrew / $1,529 Earrings / frilly lilly / $22
– and that was a fantastic experience for me. I don’t need to get to the government, but my ideas need to. That’s the way I look at it. Politics is a very toxic, ugly thing to do and be in, and in many ways, I wouldn’t want to be elected. But I know that in order to change the laws, you need to be a lawmaker, and a law changer, and those are elected officials. So I have to try and make that effort too. But ideally, I just want the ideas adopted by everybody else. I don’t need to win.”
Marijuana Prohibition and Progress
“Something changes when you start getting law enforcement, politicians, health officers, and judges, and even Marc’s own prosecutor John McKay, who was the District Attorney of Western Washington, saying we need to legalize marijuana. Not because we like to get high; not because we want to hang out with Cheech and Chong; it’s because we see the waste of billions of dollars on law enforcement with no return on that investment. We’re enriching organized crime, destroying peaceful Canadians’ lives, and wasting money that should be spent in other places. That’s where the shift happens, because there’s no self-interest in legalizing it from their perspective. So mothers and fathers and ordinary citizens feel much more comfortable agreeing with former MLA Kash Heed or Dr. Evan Wood. These are people who are not Marc Emery hitting a big bong in front of police stations, you know? [laughs] But that was needed at first and Marc laid the groundwork. It’s reaching new audiences and
Living Her Work
“I’m trying to get out more. I never even went to a beach in Vancouver until last summer. I like going to Aphrodite’s cafe every once in a while, getting a cherry pie. But I don’t really do much else. I’m just always gogo-go. I always say it’s better to be busy than be bored. I can’t separate my work life and my business life. I don’t even know what to call myself when people ask what I do. Well, a business owner, public speaker, activist, editor, ran for office...I’m Jodie! But I’m so fortunate, and every day I’m thankful for everything. I can see; I can breathe; I can walk. I’m a woman in a country with the freedom to vote and to be the person I want to be. I’m in downtown Vancouver—I mean it’s the best place on earth! I don’t need to go out or socialize or have hobbies. I just have to look out my window. I’m so lucky and I’d better work hard to keep deserving this.”
The Future
“It’ll be really great to see what happens when Marc comes home because he always wanted this for me. We knew this was going to be my time to shine and that I was going to have to step into my own. For me it was terrifying. My main focus with Marc being gone was to not mess it up. I’ve never thought of myself as a businesswoman, but I guess after three years it’s been working out. We were such a great team before he left, and apart we’re even more powerful in many ways. So when we get back together, Harper, watch out.”

Five Secrets to a Flatter Tummy By Elisa Kosonen
N
o matter what your body shape is—thin, athletic or curvy— flat abs are no easy feat. Genetics and lifestyle factors play such a role in how our stomach looks that as soon as swimsuit season hits, we’re all looking for the key to a sleeker waistline, no matter how many crunches we’ve done. The good news? There is hope for all of us! By making a few lifestyle changes with these expert tips, a flatter tummy is within reach.
1. Switch to a Whole Foods Diet
If there’s one thing we can all do to achieve a sleeker stomach, it’s change the way we eat. “The fact is that the way we look, physically, is at least 80% diet,” admits Matt Reid, GM at Studeo55 in Vancouver who has trained the enviable abs of celebrities such as Halle Berry, Renée Zellweger and Anne Hathaway. “And this is coming from a fitness guy.” Choosing healthy, whole foods that are easier to digest will keep our system happy and lean, and, therefore, our abs too. “Eliminating toxins in your body will help get rid all that stuff that builds up on your intestinal walls and makes you look puffy,” Alyssa Bauman, holistic nutritionist at Nourished, advises. “Take back control of what you’re eating. Preservatives, nitrates, chemicals and all these funky ingredients we’re putting in our bodies will definitely cause bloating.” Tip: Start each day with warm water with lemon and a pinch of cayenne to alkalize your body and get your digestive system whirring.
2. Reduce Stress
“When we’re stressed, we release the hormone cortisol, which makes our stomach more bloated,” Bauman says. Not only does stress lead to weight gain in the stomach area, cortisol triggers the body to retain water and leads to a puffy feeling and appearance. Reducing stress isn’t a flick of a switch, however, so take small steps towards relieving anxiety at work and at home. Make the time to stretch, take a yoga class, dip into a bubble bath, go for a walk with girlfriends or watch a funny movie. Any activity that helps you feel happier and more relaxed will also make a positive impact on the shape and health of your tummy.
3. Drink Your Greens
Leafy greens are full of nutrients that contribute to good health and a satiated appetite and help pull out any toxins that have been sitting in our
bodies since the day we discovered macaroons. Try incorporating greens such as spinach, kale or Swiss chard into every meal, or sip on a green juice. “It’s my therapy in a jar. If I have any kind of problem, I’ll drink my green juice and feel really good,” Bauman says. She recommends a recipe of celery, spinach, parsley, kale, cucumber, lemon, ginger and a fruit of your choice. “If you drink this midday or morning it gives you a ton of energy and reduces your sugar cravings. That means you’re not going to choose a muffin at 4 o’clock.” Tip: Don’t eat and drink together. Washing down each bite won’t let the digestive enzymes do their job and also creates bloating. Try to leave 15 minutes between meals and liquids, Bauman advises.
4. Go Wheat-Free
Whether it’s a crusty baguette or dish of whole grain pasta, when we eat wheat, our bodies think: Yum, sugar! This causes a spike in blood sugar that sets your body up to turn your food into fat. Even the healthiest of these simple carbohydrates can contribute to weight gain and that puffy feeling, particularly around the belly. If you’re thinking about choosing gluten-free options, make sure to read the labels and ingredients carefully. Bauman advises that “gluten-free doesn’t equal healthy” as many recipes contain fillers such as corn and potato starch that aren’t friendly to our stomachs either. Try choosing brown rice or quinoa instead.
5. Mind Your Core
At the gym, the key to a flatter stomach is working out every aspect of your midsection. “I suggest adding exercises for all parts of the core— lower back, upper abs, lower abs and obliques,” says Reid. Studeo55 encourages all their clients to get to a point where they can complete the following: hold plank for two minutes, hold side plank for one minute each side, and hold an assisted back extension for one minute. These exercises are easy to do at home with a yoga mat and exercise ball. Try incorporating them into your fitness routine in combination with a few days of cardio training.

Natural Injectables:
Skin Rejuvenation with Aesthetic Biopuncture and Biotherapeutics By Amanda Beisel
F
or well over a decade, aesthetic biopuncture and biotherapeutics have been among the leading skin rejuvenation methods in Europe. These unique and progressive practices merge acupuncture injection therapy and skin needling with high-grade homeopathic solutions, amino acids, vitamins and growth factors to reverse aging at the cellular level. They have been clinically proven to repair, regenerate and detoxify the skin, as well as improve lymphatic flow and circulation to restore the vitality of your skin. The importance of a well-functioning lymphatic system is often overlooked in skin rejuvenation strategies. Lymph helps fight infection and acts as a toxin filter for our bodies. Sluggish lymph circulation leads to toxic buildup and limits the body’s ability to function optimally. This internal congestion has a huge impact on the appearance of your skin. Some common skin-related problems that can be attributed to improper lymphatic functions include: • Bumps under the skin’s surface • Sensitive, reactive and “allergic” skin • Premature aging of the skin • Acne breakouts that are slow to heal • Puffy eyes and face • Dull skin tone • Rosacea
Aesthetic biopuncture and biotherapeutics recognize that such undesirable changes in the appearance of our skin are more complex than just the simple result of aging. The skin requires nutritional and lymphatic support, as well as key building blocks, to restore and regenerate a healthy state at the cellular level.
Aesthetic Biopuncture
Aesthetic biopuncture involves tiny injections of natural substances just under the skin into acupuncture points, trigger points and other areas of concern. As a safe and all-natural alternative to Botox and dermal fillers, this is an ideal choice for those searching for a more natural, long-term route to facial rejuvenation. These injections can, however, be used in conjunction with Botox and other fillers for great results. The objective of aesthetic biopuncture is to create a blueprint of healthy collagen that stimulates regeneration of new connective tissue and improves peripheral circulation. These treatments are not a quick fix, but rather a long-term solution to reduce the signs of aging while improving the health of the skin. The natural injections are safe and have no known side effects. Aesthetic biopuncture is often performed in conjunction with cosmetic acupuncture or biotherapeutics with skin needling to yield maximum results. A series
28 | fresh vancouver Issue 11 28 | fresh Vancouver Issue 19
of six or more treatments is recommended and would be determined at time of consultation.
Biotherapeutics with Skin Needling
Skin needling with biotherapeutics is a results-oriented treatment that utilizes a dermal roller to effectively infuse regenerative solutions into the skin. The most effective products used in this treatment are those of GUNA Homeopathics—a cutting-edge Italian homeopathy company with products that have been scientifically researched and prepared to the highest pharmacological standards. GUNA Homeopathics products encourage the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, and have been proven to treat the signs of intrinsic and extrinsic aging. Just some of the benefits seen with aesthetic biopuncture and biotherapeutics include: • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles • Improved skin tone • Improved skin elasticity • A more radiant complexion • Supportive treatment of acne and rosacea
29
|
• Improved lymphatic flow • Improved skin circulation • Reduced puffiness of face and eyes • Reduced localized fat tissue Aesthetic biopuncture and biotherapeutics have been shown to improve the look of your skin while dramatically slowing the aging process. These injections produce a “flattening” effect on wrinkles. Since they lead to an improved metabolism at the area of application, not an artificial filling activity, continued treatments will result in continued improvement. One can expect to see an improvement in skin tone, reduction of wrinkles on the face and neck, improved skin texture and overall vibrancy. Aesthetic biopuncture and biotherapeutics are antiaging in its truest form.

Dr Lydia Waterson, MD Q: Should I be using vitamin C on my skin? What form is best for me? A: Vitamin C is crucial in maintaining healthy, resilient skin. Young
skin is full of vitamin C, while aging skin naturally loses this nutrient over time. UV light, pollutants and cigarette smoke compound the vitamin’s decline, leading to accelerated aging of the skin. Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the skin. It helps to slow down the aging process by preventing free radical damage and long-term use has been clinically proven to regenerate collagen production, thereby reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles. Vitamin C also combats and lightens sun-related pigmentation and brightens skin tone. To specifically target and prevent your face from aging, topical vitamin C is best. Applying vitamin C to the skin can be 20 times more effective than taking it orally. Topical vitamin C is sold in a wide range of skin care products. Look for the ones that contain between 3% and 10% vitamin C, including the active ingredient ascorbic acid or L-ascorbic acid. Packaging is also very important. All antioxidants, including vitamin C, are vulnerable to deterioration in the presence of air and light. Unless the product is in an airtight and opaque package, don’t buy it! Vitamin C is safe to combine with all your skincare products as it works synergistically with other antioxidants. For a super powerful anti-aging punch, try combining vitamins C and E.

Anita Fofie, MD Q: I’ve always had rosy cheeks, but as I’ve
gotten older it seems like my face is always red. Plus, I’m dealing with adult acne for the first time and have little broken blood vessels on my nose that I can’t seem to get rid of. What’s going on? A: Sounds like you have rosacea, which is a chronic, inflammatory
skin condition affecting the central part of the face. Rosacea causes facial redness and produces small, red, pus-filled pustules or bumps. It is often mistaken for acne, eczema or some other skin allergy. Very rarely, rosacea can affect the eyes making them irritated and bloodshot. It’s most common among fair skinned people of European descent. It’s also hereditary, so that gin blossom on the end of your uncle’s nose could be a clue into whether your redness and skin sensitivity could be rosacea. In its mildest form, it can cause intermittent flushing when triggered with alcohol, spicy foods, sun, wind, or heavy exertion, but the condition can progress to persistent redness, dilation of the facial vessels, and permanent skin changes on the nose and cheeks. Don’t despair! There are things you can do to manage rosacea and keep it from progressing. Topical antibiotic agents like Metrogel alone or in conjunction with oral antibiotics like Tetracycline, Erythromycin or Minocycline, can help control the inflammation associated with rosacea. Photorejuvenation treatments such as pulsed dye laser or intense pulse-light can help shrink the blood vessels on the face and reduce redness. There’s no need to suffer with redness any longer. Talk to your doctor about how you can manage your rosacea today.

Michelle Pammenter Young : Mother, Author, Cancer Warrior By Elisa Kosonen
A
ccording to the Canadian Cancer Society, it is estimated that an average of 500 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer each day. At the age of 47, Michelle Pammenter Young was one of them. Since being diagnosed in 2012, Young has undergone surgery and cancer treatment, spurred conversation through her blog “Giving Cancer the Boot”, penned a book titled The Year I Died, and created awareness Michelle Pammenter Young with a new campaign called “Cancer Warriors”—all while raising a family in Brackendale, BC. Her fight isn’t over yet. In so many ways, and like so many others battling the disease with bravery and grace, she’s just getting started.
such items as lip balm, skin cream, handmade soaps, tissues, a blanket, a toothbrush, a cup with a straw, a lollipop, a specially made bracelet, a hand made sweet treat, and more. The bags will also include The Cancer Warrior Handbook, a funny, anecdotal guide for cancer patients. It is a glossary-style book where you can look up a symptom or a particular drug and read some real life experiences from others about it. In my experience, there is nothing like talking to someone else going through chemo and radiation to find out what it is “really” all about. This book is designed to impart that knowledge. This is the biggest fight anyone will ever have to face. But there are many of us warriors out here willing to lend an ear or provide a little encouragement.” The Year I Died is available for purchase on Amazon. Follow Michelle Pammenter Young’s story through her blog “Giving Cancer the Boot” at pammenteryoung. blogspot.ca.
Blogging Through Illness
“Initially when I started my blog, it was to let my friends and family know about inflammatory breast cancer and help keep them informed on my progress. After a short while, I realized how cathartic it was for me and within a month, I began getting emails from other cancer patients thanking me for helping them by sharing my journey. From that point, it became very much about showing the human side of cancer and letting people know they can survive this. They are not alone.”
Her Diagnosis
“Suffice to say, when I was first diagnosed with cancer, I was devastated. I could not believe that someone as fit and healthy as I was could get cancer and especially at such a relatively young age. Then, when I found out that inflammatory breast cancer had such a short expectancy and low survival rate, I was stunned. But the fighter in me got back up and said, “No way. No way will I succumb to this disease.” I started researching online about my disease (though I don’t recommend that; there’s way too much negative information), connected with a great oncologist and naturopath and made a plan to fight like hell.”
Writing a Memoir
“My book, The Year I Died, is the story of how the year of 2012 unfolded for me. It is a story about loss (of my innocence and health), death and survival. I wanted to share my struggle with a larger audience than my blog and inspire people to keep their head up and keep fighting. I began writing the book in January 2013 and didn’t stop until I finished at the end of February. It became a work of humour, love, pain and inspiration. I have been blessed to have received an amazing response and started touring with the book in June.”
A Community of Warriors
“I created Warrior Bags to be sent to patients newly diagnosed with cancer. They are gift bag of goodies designed to bring some joy, love and humour to what is otherwise a devastating situation. They will include

Spa Standards By Ana Vila-Cha
I
n October 2003, the beauty industry in British Columbia was deregulated by the provincial government. What does this mean for you, the consumer? Your hair stylist, esthetician or laser technician no longer has to complete their education at an accredited school or pass any certification exams. While the industry does have organizations that support their members by providing continued education, belonging to these organizations is not mandatory. Without licensing, the beauty industry has become a free-for-all, and therefore it is up to the consumer to become their own advocate for safety and sanitation standards. Do you know how your pedicure tub is disinfected? Are the sheets on your massage table clean? Did your esthetician double-dip in the wax pot? Have you recently contracted a fungal toe nail infection? All of these are scary scenarios, but they happen more often than you think. Maintaining high sanitation and disinfection standards begins with proper education. Do not be afraid to ask your technician whether she went to school to learn her trade or if she was trained “in house”. In an industry that is unlicensed, anyone can open a school without qualifications or hire someone off the street to train them in their salon. This, in turn, means that technicians who have studied at a reputable school are lumped into the same category as the unqualified. Laser hair removal and laser skin rejuvenation are more popular than ever, yet in untrained hands, a laser machine is extremely dangerous and can result in third degree burns, permanent scarring and disfigurement. You don’t have to be an esthetician or have any knowledge of skincare to perform laser treatments in British Columbia. Be aware of cheap specials for laser treatments—sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Always do research on the laser clinic, spa or medical office that you intend to visit for laser treatments. Ask what training the laser technicians have had and how long they’ve been providing treatments. Sanitation and disinfection procedures are very important for you

to be aware of when visiting your favourite spa or salon. When asked, your technician should be able to explain how the work area and tools were sanitized and disinfected. An effective disinfectant will destroy all bacteria, fungi and viruses on surfaces. Typically these disinfectants are of hospital grade. Often spas will throw words around like alcohol or bleach when describing sanitation procedures, but it is important to note that alcohol is not an adequate disinfectant. Likewise, bleach must contain 5.25% sodium hypochlorite to be an effective disinfectant. Another word used often is sterilization. Most of the time it is used in an incorrect context. Sterilization completely kills all microorganisms. A lot of people think that by exposing implements to high heat or steam, they can claim an element of sterilization, but it’s not enough. Sterilization is a lengthy process and, therefore, simply can’t realistically be used in salons and spas. In North America, consumers pay a lot of money for the luxury of relaxation, the smell of essential oils, lotions and candles. A warm cup of tea or coffee to cradle in your hands while flipping through a magazine. This is what a visit to your favourite spa should be: pampering, relaxing and tranquil. You should leave with meticulously polished toes, soft and hydrated skin and a feeling that all your stresses have melted away, if only for a while. You should not have think about whether you have picked up an infection due to poor sanitation and disinfection procedures. Bear this in mind when you make your next appointment.

SKIN TYTE
a safe and effective skin firming treatment
DON’T NEGLECT YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER UVA rays are one of the main causes in accelerating the visible signs of aging. Even mild sun exposure can cause a massive increase in an enzyme called MMP. This enzyme breaks down collagen. It is almost like scissors snipping at your collagen, and to make matters worse, collagen production comes to a halt and elevated oxidative stress occurs. Don’t neglect your skin in the summer - this is the time when accelerated aging kicks in to high gear!
BEFORE & AFTER
Skin Tyte is a safe, affordable, painless and quick way to tighten your skin. It utilizes infrared light to contract and firm existing collagen and stimulate the formation of new collagen. Another very important benefit is that it shortens the elastin fibres in your skin so that it retains it’s ability to bounce back just like an elastic band.
BENEFITS OF SKIN TYTE Tightens the skin on the face, neck, and abdomen Stimulates new collagen Shortens elastin fibres to help maintain skin elasticity Safe to do in the summer because it is not photo-sensitive
SKIN TYTE SUMMER PROMOTION Per session (Face, Neck or Abdomen) $225 Package of 3 sessions $599 Pacakge of 6 sessions $999 *call for package pricing for multiple areas
