f spring is the season of renewal, then autumn is most definitely the season of rejuvenation. We overhaul our wardrobes—fall is fashion’s biggest season, after all; it demands a few new things!—and we refocus our energy on our health, fitness and skincare regimens. Plus, just as the kids are going back to school, we often feel a little refreshed coming back to work after being in vacation mode for two months. Yes, it’s certainly bittersweet when the fun-filled days of summer come to a close, but when the air starts to get a little crisp and the days a little shorter, I can’t help but feel energized. This issue brings a new special section called Women in Business, in which we profile some of Canada’s most inspiring entrepreneurs and leaders in the health, wellness, fashion and beauty industries. A few are pioneers in the digital arena, finding new ways to help women delve deep into the issues that really matter. Others are doctors, business owners and creators. It’s incredible to see just how many women are ruling their industries in our community. Fresh has been lucky to feature a number of them on our covers over the years, but with only a few covers a year available, I’m so excited to be able to share more of their stories with you. If you are interested in participating and telling your own story, please drop us a line at info@freshvancouver.com. We would love to meet you. Our cover star, Mashiah Vaughn, is an example of the inspiring women around us. It’s difficult not to use the term “Renaissance woman” when telling her story. Her resume touts modeling, acting, launching a beauty brand, producing a reality television show and countless philanthropic efforts, just as a start. The Steve Nash Fitness Clubs spokesperson flew in from Malta to spend time with us for a beautiful photo shoot on Bowen Island and sat down for a candid interview about her passion for fundraising and overcoming one of the most difficult challenges a mother can face. I am incredibly inspired by these women. I hope you will be too.

YOUR SKIN RESTORATION PLAN
LONG LIVE HEALTHY SKIN By Amanda Beisel

FRESH VANCOUVER ISSUE 20
S
ummer is a blissful and carefree season full of picnics and beach time. We spend more time outdoors in the summer than in any other season. This daily sun exposure combined with sweat, ocean salt, wind, and pollution inevitably leaves our skin with more damage than it had the previous year. This means that, year over year, damage builds up. While our largest organ is protecting us all summer long, we often forget to return the favour and give it the support it needs. The extent of the damage depends on how well you protect your skin during the summer season and how effectively you take care of your skin post-summer. Incorporating a skin restoration plan can save your skin for the long term while reducing and, actually, preventing the visible signs of sun damage from appearing on your face and body. Sun damage is more than skin deep. An unnerving fact is that UVA and UVB exposure not only depletes our collagen, but it actually alters the DNA of our skin cells. The breakdown results in uneven pigmentation, changes in skin texture, loss of elasticity and, increasingly more common, cancer. The effects of UV exposure are cumulative, becoming increasingly visible as we age. The more exposure we have, the greater our risk becomes for developing skin cancer and prematurely aged skin. Starting your skin restoration program in the fall months is ideal. While a proactive approach is optimal, many of us are already showing the signs of sun damage we have incurred from past years of sun soaking. Your skin restoration plan should be customized to your particular needs and will work to reverse the visible signs while preventing new damage from forming.
Treatment Options for a Skin Restoration Plan: BBL Photo-Facial
BBL Photo-Facials are highly effective at eliminating pigmentation and redness in the skin. The BBL Photo-Facial has been clinically proven, time and time again, to promote new collagen formation and to reverse the aging of skin cells. This treatment assists in correcting years of sun damage by using light-based energy.
BBL Skin Tyte
BBL Skin Tyte uses infrared heat to stimulate and contract your existing collagen fibers resulting in visibly firmer skin. This process initiates the body’s natural healing process and a new foundation of collagen is created, resulting in a firmer and more youthful skin. The full effect of skin firming can be seen over several subsequent months. This treatment is quick, tolerable and safe for all skin types.
BBL Photo-Firming Treatment
The BBL Photo-Firming Treatment is an advanced treatment that combines the BBL PhotoFacial and BBL Skin Tyte in one session for enhanced results. The BBL Photo-Firming Treatment is a unique and innovative technique that stimulates collagen, prevents thinning of the skin, strengthens elastin fibers, restores sun damaged skin, targets pigmentation, slows volume loss and causes skin cells to replicate unimpaired. The BBL Photo-Firming Treatment is the most advanced, non-invasive technique available to us today.
Natural Chemical Peel Series
Natural chemical peels are a dynamic and impressive method to rejuvenate the damaged top layers of skin. A customized peel will address such

concerns as uneven pigmentation, irregular texture and fine lines while increasing the overall radiance and vibrancy of your skin. While the variety of peels to choose from can seem overwhelming, an experienced skin practitioner can assist you in customizing a plan that will target your specific needs. Natural chemical peels continue to evolve and are more diverse and effective than ever before.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a form of mechanical exfoliation that removes the superficial and damaged layers of skin revealing smoother, healthier and fresh new skin. Microdermabrasion can target concerns such as congestion and blocked pores, dullness, fine lines, rough texture and more. Microdermabrasion can be combined with a light natural chemical peel for enhanced results.
Medical Skin Needling
Medical skin needling is a safe and effective alternative to Fraxel Laser. This procedure uses a roller with microscopic needles between 1-2 mm long. As the needles are gently rolled over the skin, tiny punctures are created within the epidermis and dermis that encourage the skin’s own natural healing response. This process stimulates new collagen formation, improves skin tone and texture and helps restore years of sun damage. Medical skin needling leads to more plump, resilient and healthier skin at the cellular level.
Daily Skin Restoration Program
The products you put on your skin every day can make or break the progress of your skin restoration plan, not to mention the rate at which your skin ages and, inevitably, its appearance. There is no such thing as a magic serum, regardless of extravagant marketing campaigns. There are, however, results-driven and clinically proven ingredients available such as retinaldehyde, L-Ascorbic acid, copper peptides, growth factors, phloretin and more. Remember, formulation is key when it comes to the ability of such ingredients to be effective. When investing in products, it is important to speak with a knowledgeable skincare practitioner who can guide you to the most effective formulas, inform you on how they work and answer your questions thoroughly. Maintaining and improving your skin’s health is one of the most beneficial investments you can make. People often believe that skincare is an indulgence and is based on vanity. However, I encourage my clients to view skin treatments and home care in the same way they would view dental care. It truly is a health necessity that requires professional guidance and analysis. The care and upkeep of our skin is an essential pillar of our overall health and longevity. Get started on your skin restoration plan now and reap the benefits of an improved condition and beautiful skin.

FRESH VANCOUVER ISSUE 20
ASK THE EXPERT
BOB MEHR RPh Q: What are some tips to help relieve dry skin,
especially now that we are approaching fall and winter? A: Taking omega-3 oil supplements daily or making sure you incorporate omega-3 rich foods into your diet every day is the first step. Our diets are low in healthy fats and fatty acid imbalance is very common. This leads to dry, itchy skin. Fatty acids are essential building blocks for your body, including your skin, hair, and nails. A person taking omega-3s can quickly tell a difference in their skin. Other tips include: 1. Apply moisturizer to the body while the skin is slightly moist after showering or bathing. Note that highly perfumed or fragranced moisturizers are drying to the skin. 2. Hot showers dehydrate the skin. Use warm water in the shower or bath instead. Hot showers can also worsen rosacea-prone skin as well. 3. Avoid the use of bar soaps which are drying to the skin. Healing botanical facial cleaners and moisturizing body washes should be used through the dry winter months. 4. Limit foods and beverages that lead to water retention and dehydration, such as caffeine, alcohol, salty and processed foods. 5. Drink plenty of fluids: two litres of water daily. This sounds like a lot of water; however, that is just four bottles every day. 6. Look for ingredients in skincare such as hyaluronic acid, which is a humectant and holds water in the skin. It hydrates without making the skin oily. Facial serums commonly contain hyaluronic acid (many times listed as sodium hyaluronate on the label) but be sure to find a product that does not have less than 0.5% hyaluronic acid. Or, you can ask Pure Integrative Pharmacists to compound it for you. Pure Integrative Pharmacies also compound a special cream for eczema and dry skin which is all natural and very popular. 7. Another ingredient that is highly emollient and moisturizing is shea butter. Shea butter can be used for the body or the face. Shea butter leaves skin feeling silky soft. Note that it should be reserved for dry skin because it is comedogenic, which means it can clog pores if used at too high of a level.
ASK THE EXPERT
AMANDA BEISEL Q: For the past few months, I have been on
my post-pregnancy weight loss plan consisting of healthy eating and exercise. I lost 10 lbs in the first two months but I am struggling to lose the last 10 lbs. Is there anything I can add to my weight loss program to help me lose the last 10 lbs? A: If you are on a healthy weight loss program and feel like you have hit a wall in your progress, I recommend Trim Me Up injections. The Trim Me Up injection consists of amino acids, vitamins and nutrients that will kick start the metabolism and support the body. These aren’t miracle injections; however, they are a support system and boost to a healthy lifestyle. They contain lipotropic compounds (choline, methionine, inositol) and B-vitamins that stimulate the breakdown of fat during metabolism, support liver health, and naturally speed up the metabolism. These injections also contain Vitamin B12 and a customchosen blend of other vitamins. Vitamin B12 is required for proper digestion and the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. It is recommended to have one Trim Me Up injection each week for six weeks. Be sure to ask how these injections may be covered by extended health benefits. ASK THE EXPERT
DR SPENCE PENTLAND Q: Is there anything I should be aware of that can negatively affect my fertility? A:
Yes. Many toxins in our environment are known to disrupt hormonal balance and are contributing factors in conditions such as infertility, PMS, irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, premature ovarian failure, recurrent pregnancy loss and anxiety. A recent study of over 500 couples showed that pregnancy rates declined significantly when increased levels of toxic chemicals were found in the blood. Since the exposure to many of these chemicals is inevitable, we absolutely need to make choices to minimize exposure where possible. The following are important to avoid or completely eliminate: • Non-organic animal products (meats, eggs, dairy) • Water that has been stored in a plastic container • Cleaning agents that contain scent (laundry, body, hair, dish, household) • Dryer sheets and fabric softeners • Cosmetic lines that are not completely transparent about their ingredients • Microwaving food, especially in plastic containers • Domestic home and garden pesticides • Canned foods (unless specified non-BPA lining) • Phthalates (used in cosmetics and to soften plastic) We all know now that it is necessary to avoid cigarettes. We look back at past generations, smoking in places like maternity wards in hospitals, and shake our heads. Future generations will look back at us and shake their heads, saying things like: ‘I can’t believe they microwaved plastic then ate out of it!’ or ‘They actually sprayed perfume right onto their body!’ It is time to stop supporting the companies that sell products that put our health in danger, and to start supporting the amazing local companies that produce safe products. It is time to wake up and do what we can to avoid the detrimental effects these substances and habits have on our health, and the health of future generations. Trying to adhere to all of these recommendations at once may be a little overwhelming. Take baby steps and commit to one or two at a time. Dedication to healthier living will ensure you are doing your part in protecting your fertility.
ASK THE EXPERT
ANITA FOFIE, MD Q: I’ve been noticing an increase in pigmenta-
tion and sun damage spots on my face, neck, and even my hands. What can I do? A: Hopefully, you were protecting your skin all summer long with a good SPF. But now that it’s fall, you can take care of photodamage from the sun by trying an IPL “photofacial”. Chronic sun damage can include anything from irregular brown and red discoloration of the skin to even an overall lack of elasticity. These “sun spots”, broken capillaries and fine lines lie in the surface of the skin and make our skin look older than it should. IPL, or intense pulsed light, reduces these discolorations and makes the skin tone more even and youthful looking with little to no downtime. It does this by heating up the pigmented structures in the skin, damaging or destroying the blood vessel or the “sun spot”. You can expect freckles and “sun spots” to darken slightly and flake off over the days following your photofacial. IPL is safest for fairer skinned individuals and, although you will notice an improvement with just one treatment, we recommend a minimum of three treatments for more significant results. A graduate of Yale University and a fellow in aesthetic medicine, Anita Fofie, MD is the owner and founder of the Dermix Institute of Aesthetic Medicine in downtown Vancouver’s English Bay specializing in nonsurgical facial and body rejuvenation. To make an appointment for a free consultation at Dermix, please call 604.652.4SPA or visit www.dermixinstitute.com to book your visit online.

BEAUTY FOODS By Alyssa Bauman
T
rue beauty really does come from within. Whether 26 or 62, what we eat shows on our faces. But eating for vanity has benefits beyond our complexion. Take note of these top five beauty foods to get gorgeous – inside and out.
Beautifying traits: Leafy greens are like pure, sparkling sunlight for the body. They contain alkalizing vitamins and minerals, blood building chlorophyll, and can help reduce stress. Happy and relaxed is beautiful!
1. Quinoa
Coconut used to have a bad rep because of its high fat content, but it’s the healthy kind of fat we need. High in lauric acid, it enhances immunity and boosts metabolism. How to eat: Its water, milk, oil and fresh meat are all valuable in our diets. Add dried unsulphured shredded coconut to smoothies, oatmeal and to your baking. Its oil adds a slightly nutty sweet flavour to cooking. Use it to replace butter in baking. Beautifying traits: Leaves your skin glowing and your hair glossy. The medium chain fatty acids in coconuts prevent cellular degeneration, which slows the skin’s aging process. Coconut water is a super hydrator which gives the skin a plumped up, supple look.
This mineral-dense and gluten-free ancient grain has a slightly nutty flavor that’s high in protein and fiber, yet low in fat and low on the glycemic index (which means it will help keep your blood sugars even). Make this your go-to carb fix. How to eat: Use in place of pasta and other wheat grains. Beautifying traits: Easily digestible seeds free up the body for other functions – repair, rejuvenate, renew (Hello beauty!) – instead of working super hard on digestion and absorption (Goodbye beauty busters wheat and gluten!).
2. Chia Seeds
Chia has been around for millennia and is everywhere now, for good reason. Chia is the highest plant source of omega-3 essential fatty acids and is also an amazing source of protein, calcium, potassium and iron. Plus, it’s high in fiber and antioxidants. How to eat: Sprinkle on salads or add ¼ cup to baking recipes, pancakes or smoothies. Beautifying traits: These little seeds pack a huge beauty punch. Chia’s slimming effect will have you addicted. It controls hunger as it expands in the belly and keeps cravings at bay. It’s also a great skin plumper.
3. Kale
This dark, leafy green is rich in vitamins K, A, C and E, minerals, enzymes, magnesium, fiber, protein (Yes, protein!), calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. It also fights fatigue, strengthens the immune system and reduces sugar cravings. What more do you need? How to eat: Juice it, sauté it in garlic, eat it raw, roll it around some avocado or make a yummy kale salad.
14
|
4. Coconut
5. Avocado
High in fiber, folates and phytontrients, this is the fat our body needs. How to eat: Or how not to eat! Avocados are great on their own, sliced up in a salad, combined with kale or added to smoothies for a creamy texture. Beautifying traits: The monounsaturated fats and vitamin E in avocados assist production of collagen, enhance skin tone and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They are also rich in antioxidants and antiinflammatory nutrients, which lead to healthier cells. You can see it immediately if someone has been eating their avocados.

Not only does it come in a handy stick, this creamy foundation transforms into a powder finish to help dissolve oil. I apply it all over my face and easily blend it with my fingers. Available in 12 oil-free shades at www.maybelline.ca.
"Drops of Jade"
Textured nails seem to be everywhere lately. No matter where you go, the shelves are filling up with do-ityourself kits and polishes that jazz up your hands and feet. My newest craze is "Drops of Jade” from Maybelline’s new Colour Show Nail Lacquer Polka Dots Collection. I love that you can wear it alone for a robin's egg look and feel or add it over your favourite base colour for that added pop. Check out the five spot-on shades at
“Time in a Bottle”
I am a big advocate of feeding your skin with nutrients and Philosophy’s “Time in a Bottle” does just that. The combination of a DNA renewal complex and high-potency vitamin C left my skin brightened, more radiant and smooth. The best part about this serum is you mix it yourself, ensuring it has the highest level of activity and potency. Philosophy simplifies skincare and leaves more time to focus on what really matters. Suitable for all skin types. Shop www.philosophy.com or stop by Sephora today.

The New
Semi-Permanent Makeup By Heather White

FRESH VANCOUVER ISSUE 20
S
emi-permanent makeup conjures up images of overdone: drag queen meets your old granny’s lip line. But there’s a new generation of semi-permanent makeup that looks 100% natural. Semi-permanent makeup consists of implantation techniques that deposit spots of pigment into the upper dermis of the skin, using highly precise digital equipment with pharmaceutical-grade pigments in a wide range of colours. The pigments can also be blended to suit your colouring. A proper consultation is essential for pigment or anesthetic patch testing. Be sure to also look at photographs of your practitioner’s work and ask all the questions you need to in order to fully understand what the procedure is and how it works. For example, many don’t realize that the pigment appears 40% darker immediately after procedure and is more sharply defined. This softens and lightens as it heals. Also, as I’m sure we all know, searching for the minimum price often results in minimum quality. Makeup is an art like any other and an experienced, knowledgeable makeup artist will be able to offer you a service that is specialized to your needs and of the highest quality. Whatever procedure you decide upon will consist of three appointments: consultation, procedure and a touch up within four to six weeks of the initial treatment. Look at any of the catwalks this season and you’ll see that eyebrows are setting the trend. With stunning shape and definition, beautiful brows can make a striking difference to your appearance. If you suffer from thinned eyebrow hair due to repeated plucking, have very pale eyebrow hair, or have lost hair due to age or illness, semi-permanent makeup can provide you with that perfect brow. Do you wake up in the morning feeling all piggy-eyed? Are you terrified to let your man see you without mascara? You’re not alone. These are actually the top reasons why women consider permanent eye make up treatments. So what can the new semi-permanent makeup do for you? Eyebrows: Always opt for the hair stroke technique. This gradually builds up single hair strokes for a natural look rather than the old block method which looks hard and drawn on. Eyes: Eye enhancement and eyeliner are great options if you want your lashes to look darker and thicker or want full-on smoldering eyes. Men can also benefit from the procedure with a special treatment called “Guyliner”. Lips: You can also have amazing, fuller-looking lips by recreating symmetry or adding a hint of colour, ranging from the look of lip gloss to lipstick. Lip enhancements are a wonderful way of subtly replacing lost pigment, especially to the outer border of the lips where it most commonly fades as we age. The new technique of blending the pigment with your natural lip colour ensures there aren’t any harsh outlines.
Breasts: Say hello to the latest trend in the UK: tittooing. The purpose of the procedure is to darken the nipples, define them and give that special cosmetic touch to the skin around the nipple also known as the areola. The procedure is semi-permanent, but with regular touch ups it’s suggested that a person can have perfect, “designer” nipples for life. Another benefit to this, combined with medical tattooing: you can now replicate the appearance of realistic looking nipples and areolas if you have had a mastectomy.

Plus, she has a new beauty line in development. She describes this as a semi-retirement to devote as much time as possible to her kids. Exhausted yet? Vaughn certainly isn’t. “Maybe I’m a little bit crazy,” she says laughing. “But honestly, I don’t think I have gotten anywhere near what I’m capable of doing.” Here she sits down with Fresh to talk about life balance, her passion projects and shares a triumphant story between mother and son.

Reality Check in Malta
Malta is beautiful. But of course, everywhere I go I find a charity to work on. I’ve become a little bit obsessed with the refugees that are here. I already knew that there were a lot of problems in the world and there’s not much I can do about it. But I plan on being down in the refugee camps and educating the women. I’d like to try and start a program there.

ashiah Vaughn is a force to be reckoned with. The bombshell blonde talks at a mile a minute, bouncing from family to business to charity work to a genuine earnest to make the world a better place. She is smart and persuasive, and manages to balance overachieving passion with witty self-deprecation. I learn that her personal mission is essentially to save the planet and at the end our interview I’m convinced she is the woman for the job. It’s no wonder that the Steve Nash Fitness Clubs, whose philosophy mirrors the champion multi-tasker himself, would choose her to be the spokesperson in Canada. Born in Abbotsford, she was discovered by a modeling agency at age 12 and went on to appear in campaigns for Victoria’s Secret and Polo Ralph Lauren. She moved into TV and film, racking up credits in blockbuster movies such as Fantastic Four and Scary Movie, plus hit television series like Supernatural. During all this, she managed to campaign for the planet, study criminology and sociology at Simon Fraser University and give birth to her first son. Inspired by motherhood and a passion for supporting children’s charities, the next phase of Vaughn’s life included founding Open Sundaes, a beauty brand that landed her in the Top Forty Under 40 list in BC, expanding her family and co-producing and starring in Dussault Inc., a reality show, alongside her youngest son’s father Jason Dussault. In her spare time? Working tirelessly on fundraising and charitable efforts for Canuck Place, Children’s Wish Foundation, Arts Umbrella, Cops for Cancer, and Obakki Foundation, to name a few. Today she splits her time between Vancouver, London and Malta, continues her philanthropic work with

The people I call are amazing. So it’s not me; it’s my friends and contacts that are doing their part. It’s always the people that are sponsoring me at these events that I’m so lucky to have because if I didn’t have that, I wouldn’t have the money. It does take a lot of pounding the pavement and driving everyone nuts. You have to gather up your team, you have to motivate everyone. You have to get everyone all pumped and excited. What gets me going is the child that we’re working for and showing that to my team members: “Look! We’re going to send this kid to Disneyland.” They just need people to talk about it and they get me and I go crazy. I’m not stopping until we get the money so this kid can go to Disneyland. I’m not normal, but I get obsessed and I make sure that with every charity that I take on, I don’t sleep until it’s completed.
Fighting for Children
I just can’t stand suffering. It’s painful for me. I don’t know why; it’s very personal, but I just can’t stand kids suffering. I think that what happened is that I grew up very sheltered so when I actually saw there were horrible things happening in the world, I thought, oh my god how is this happening? We need to fix this! I was always really motivated by protecting children.
Representing Steve Nash Fitness Clubs
The Steve Nash Fitness Clubs approached me when I was filming my show in 2011 and I had won ‘Top Forty Under 40’ business owners. They were interested in having someone who is fit, but relatable to get involved with the clubs. I think very highly of Steve and when I did my research and found out the amazing work he does for under-served children, I wanted to be a part of his passion. The clubs do quite a bit of fundraising for his foundation, so I thought it was a great fit. And I have learned even more about the fitness realm.

Being In Front of the Camera
As an actress I didn’t get booked on hotness, that’s for sure. I did all the silly parts. I’ve always been the comedy character. When I did Ralph Lauren, sure, I was booked for my looks. But I’ve never really thought I was all that. I thought I was weird because my lips were big and I have a not so perfect face. It’s funny, but I didn’t feel the pressure. I was just excited to be being paid for what I was doing.
Dussault Inc.
I remember talking to the director and telling him I really don’t want to do this show. But he was like, well, it’s going to promote your brand. I had Open Sundaes back then and Jason had his clothing line. But I just didn’t want to do a show about me. So he asked me what I wanted to do and I told him that I wanted to change the world. He said, okay we’ll do charity work wherever we go. So we went to Africa and did the Obakki Foundation with Treana Peake, we did a lot of great stuff. So that’s what got me into that, which I would never have done otherwise. I did not enjoy it to be honest. You could not pay me enough to do my own show ever again.
The Obakki Foundation
One of my heroes is Treana Peake from Obakki. If she ever needs anything, I’m always there in an instant. I went to Africa with her and I love all the work she does for the families of Cameroon. While I was there I came up with an idea of having the children of the school dip their hands in paint and leave their prints on construction paper in colourful paint. They then wrote their names and age. I explained to them each person is very important on this planet we all have a unique handprint and to always remember there is only one them and they matter. These children have no birth certificate and some didn’t know their birthdays. I wanted them to feel confident and to never give up. We auctioned these prints off at home and raised money for the Obakki Foundation. That’s when I really kicked into full gear wanting to make a change and made a vow that I would continue to try to help children suffering worldwide.
Finding Balance as a Parent
I’m very old fashioned. Yes, I have the help of nannies part-time when I have to travel but honestly, I’m all about raising my children myself. But as well, I want to be that career mom and do things to make a difference. So it’s a very difficult struggle for me. It’s tough because I know I could do so much more, but you don’t neglect your family. You take care of your family first and then you can help others.
A Mother’s Instinct
My journey with my son having autism began when I had been advised by my pediatrician to get the H1N1 shot. Based on history with throat issues, he might not survive if he got sick. After much deliberation, his doctor and I agreed to give him the vaccination. I took the adult dose first to make sure it was okay for him. When it was my son’s turn, I had his dose cut in half to see if he would react. If he was okay, I would bring him back the following week for the second dose. Unfortunately, my son had a bad reaction to the shot: fever for three days followed by losing movement on the left side of his body. I rushed him to emergency and lived with him at Children’s Hospital for a month doing tests—lumbar puncture, CAT scans, blood work… anything to figure out the cause. My nerves were shot. Sleep deprivation was a norm at that time. I felt it was a reaction to the shot. I don’t know, just a motherly instinct. Finally,
he miraculously stopped limping and falling over and finally stood on his own. The doctors and staff were cheering—it was a big victory after weeks of nerve-wracking anxiety, sleepless nights and endless research. As time passed from that experience, his throat issues started to dissipate and the number of hospital visits decreased. We moved to LA to shoot the second season of a show I was working on with my ex. I noticed more and more behaviours that set off alarm bells. He was hyper-sensitive to light, touch and noise and he was slow with his speech. My concerns grew as he seemed to have symptoms similar to autism. Shortly after we had cancelled the show and moved back to Canada, I enrolled him in preschool and noticed he was having social challenges. I persisted to get him tested. Rather than being put on a waiting list, I took him to a private clinic because early intervention is critical. He was diagnosed with high functioning autism, otherwise known as PDNOS. It was very upsetting, but at least I felt that we finally had a diagnosis. I immediately put a team together and went to work, enrolled him in programs Super Flex, Wonderkids, Speech Therapy and social playgroups. After a year and a half of these intense therapies, he started to improve. Now he gives hugs, cuddles socializes with other kids and, 2 years later, is a totally different kid. The most important thing was getting a diagnosis and getting him into these programs. I can’t stress enough how important early intervention is. You have to trust your gut if you feel your child is suffering in any way with an invisible disability. Don’t give up until your child’s needs are met. You are your child’s best advocate. No one will fight harder for your child than you. A child does not know how.
Health = Happiness
The number one thing to happiness is health. If you don’t have good health, you’re not going to be happy. And personally, I can’t stand being unhappy. I play tennis two times a day here in Malta. I make sure that I eat properly. I sleep. I’m in bed at 10pm, no later, up at 6am. It’s kind of boring, but I have a regimen. I make sure that I take care of my skin. I haven’t had the flu in probably three years at least. I don’t get sick because of all the supplements I take. With all my friends and everyone I’m in touch with, I’m always giving them ideas on like what’s the best herbal medicine or vitamin. I think I know everything. (laughs)
Age is Just a Number
I’m turning 40 soon. I have to keep an eye on things! (laughs) But you know what’s funny is that I always wanted to grow up and be older than I was. Isn’t that strange? I just thought that people would listen to me more. I embrace my age every year, like yes! When am I going to be really old and people really have to listen to me.
A Time for Change
I always feel like if things are too comfortable, I’m not growing. And you have to grow. When you’re still young and you can do something, I mean why not? No you don’t have to fix the world yourself, but let’s make it a nicer place to live. It’s the little things, like finding something to be grateful for every day. Even if you don’t feel like it, force yourself to smile because you might be changing someone’s life. The world can be miserable, why not lighten it up a little bit and make an effort. If everyone was focusing on gratitude, we’d be so much happier. There wouldn’t be all this energy wasted fighting and bickering. We could all be nice and maybe even fix the world. It sounds over simplified, but really, gratitude and kindness sum it up. I am grateful every day for the life I have.
CHANGE OF SEASONS, CHANGE YOUR MAKEUP By Julie Brown
I
s there a ‘no white after Labour Day’ equivalent where summer makeup is concerned? In other words, do I have to abandon my coral lips and toes come fall? Colours in nature change with the season, so with makeup, there are some general rules for staying chic and seasonally appropriate. Follow these tips to keep your makeup looking fresh and to keep up with the trends of the season.
The Base
Always start with the fundamentals: your moisturizer. In the summer, your skin is more hydrated and you can get away with a light veil of moisturizer under your makeup. It is a good idea to switch to a more hydrating moisturizer as the weather cools. Make sure this is part of your daily regimen before you apply any foundation to the face. My favourite moisturizer is a vitamin E cream combined with argan oil. I recommend Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil, available at Sephora. As fall arrives, you will be spending less time in the sun, and therefore, your skin will tend to lighten up a little. Check that the foundation you are currently using is the right colour match for your skin tone. Often, I will have one foundation for summer and one for winter, a shade or two apart. Because your summer glow will start to fade, dust a little bronzer on the frame of your face, cheeks, nose and chin.
The Colours
What better way to fight off blustery days than with colour that reflects the warm hues of autumn? These changes don’t have to be drastic. Simple adjustments like opting for warmer, tawnier shades can make all the difference. For eye shadows, think plum, rich brown and copper. I also love a bold smoky cat eye with eye shadows in sexy black, charcoal and grey. For blush, go for warmer tones again – less beachy, sparkly and coral. Instead try light plums and warm pinks. A matte blush is also a great way to change it up for the fall and winter months. Send the winter blahs packing with a striking new lip colour. Switch your sheer summer lip gloss for a creamy lipstick formula. This is the time of year to try a shade that is bolder than you are used to and experiment with different colours. I am a huge fan of the red lip and any makeup line will have one that is suitable for your skin tone. Plus, if you apply it sparingly, it can look very natural. Other fashionable winter colours are deep plum, darker nude shades and deep pink. Fall tends to include plenty of nude shades, inspired by colours in nature, and colours of the skin. They are universally flattering and totally sexy because they enhance a woman’s true beauty. If you’re into a more natural, minimalist look with makeup, this should not mean wearing no makeup. It means finding shades that are right for your complexion. They should blend easily and seamlessly with your skin. These changes in your makeup regimen will make your eyes pop and your skin glow flawlessly. What better way to complement your new fall wardrobe? THE 7 SINS OF SUMMERS PAST,
REVERSED By Dr Lydia Waterson MD
T
he bulk of sun damage happens in the summer months. Not only does it result in an increased risk of skin cancer, it also causes premature aging of the skin. That beautiful sunlight is a major culprit for wrinkles, dryness, age spots and more. So what can we do once the damage is done? Driven by medical concerns, beauty, or both, today there are some sensible, easy treatments and therapies to reverse and prevent future damage.
1. Unwanted Pigmentation
Skincare products containing hydroquinone, kojic acid or alpha hydroxy acids can safely reduce excess pigmentation. Vitamin C has also been shown to reduce the number of sunburned cells and reverse age-related damage to the skin. Or consider a series of chemical peels alternated with Photo Facial Skin Rejuvenation (IPL) treatments to smooth, even, and rejuvenate your complexion. For long-term sun damage, consider dermal needling/rolling and PRP therapy for the ultimate in skin rejuvenation. This treatment is less painful than fractional laser with no downtime, but is as effective, according to clinical trials. The combination helps to reverse sun damage while stimulating healthy, new collagen and elastin production in the skin. Be sure to speak to your medical esthetician or dermatologist and have a thorough consultation done to assess the damage and find a corrective treatment plan that’s right for your skin.
world when done by an experienced physician. Otherwise, dermal needling/rolling is the only rejuvenation treatment that incorporates penetration of essential cell nutrients while simultaneously stimulating the release of growth factors associated with the positive aspects of wound healing for skin repair.
4. Flip Flop Feet
Exposure to sun, chlorine and salt water can dry the skin on your feet too. Try a moisturizing foot cream. Cracked, rough heels and calluses from wearing flip flops can also play havoc with your feet. Consider a medical pedicure to get your feet silky soft and smooth again.
5. Weight Gain
Most tourists don’t return with only souvenirs and a tan, but also with at least 6-8 lbs in excess weight. Studies show that 86% of us put on weight during vacation. There are many ways to lose this weight. The HCG diet is a healthy diet known to cleanse and re-establish your metabolism. It guarantees 15 lbs of weight loss in just 21 days. Combine this with LPG (endermologie) and soon you can have your streamlined body back! The results of LPG Lipomassage are rapid, risk-free and painless. Research has proven that endermologie can increase fat burning, improve lymph drainage, firm and smooth skin, and reduce cellulite.
6. Puffiness and Bloating
2. Dry, Lacklustre Skin
The first course of action after exposure to sun, chlorine and salt water: exfoliate. The buildup of stratum corneum (the dead, outermost skin cell layer) makes skin appear blotchy and uneven, causing the skin to lose its lustre. Physical or chemical dermabrasion with gentle scrubs, alpha or poly hydroxy acid peels, and microdermabrasion can remove dead skin cells. Then, hydrate. Moisturizers with AHA or facial serums with hyaluronic acid can plump up dry skin making it appear more radiant and less wrinkled instantly. Continued use may also help stimulate the production of new collagen. To find the best combination of products for exfoliation and hydration to get that dewy plump youthful glow back, discuss a plan with your esthetician. Don’t forget to feed your skin. Studies suggest that nutrients can improve and protect your skin. Creams and serums that include vitamins C or E may protect and reverse sun damage. Products containing vitamins A or B3 may be able to correct the sun damage you already have.

THE ESSENCE OF
ARTISAN DENTISTRY By Dr Kelvin P Mah
BEFORE
AFTER
A
s I’ve both personally experienced and heard from countless patients over the years, the classic dental experience—you know, the one with the starchy white lab coat-wearing dentist who peers at you from behind a folder—can be characterized by the word “what.” That’s because the typical pre-treatment dialogue between dentist and patient is conspicuously short, strikingly one-sided, and amounts to little more than a lecture on what the dentist says is best. And so, even when patients seemingly make a choice, they can’t help but feel that it was never really their decision at all. It was pretty much pre-determined by their all-knowing dentist, and they merely went through the motions. The essence of artisan dentistry as I practice and promote it is fundamentally different because I don’t start by determining what my patients need or don’t need. I begin by exploring why they’re motivated to make a positive change in their life. This process involves a laid-back dialogue (which can take place over several visits) that unfolds in a private, peaceful and specially-designated meeting room here at Smile City Square Dental. Together, we discover unique aspects of their personality, perspectives and preferences. From there we co-create a custom smile solution that will satisfy them on every level: body, mind and spirit. To help illustrate my emphasis on why instead of what—which is quite different from most other dentists and, frankly, most other healthcare professionals in general—I wanted to introduce you to Greg.
30
|
Greg first came to Smile City Square Dental more than a year ago to have some general dental work completed. (I have to thank his wonderful wife Anne, who was already a patient of mine, for introducing us!) At the time, Greg had indicated some initial interest in correcting an uneven smile that resulted from a couple of discoloured and inward-turned front teeth. However, he wasn’t looking to make a change. What’s more, in speaking with him, I noted that he was a very cerebral individual who preferred to take time and think things through before making a decision. It’s a personality trait that I share, so I was happy to respect his preferences, provide him with some preliminary information, and invite him to reach out to me if and when he wished to learn more or move ahead. Several months later, you can imagine how delighted I was when Greg came in to chat! It turns out that his wife Anne had gently encouraged him to improve his smile—not because it would make her happier, but because she knew that it would make him happier. True-to-form, Greg carefully considered the possibility, and after reflecting on where he was in his life personally and professionally, he agreed that it was the right time to make a positive change. As we chatted, I also learned that while Greg wanted an upgraded smile, he absolutely didn’t want it to look artificial or “flashy”. Rather, he wanted it to be natural-looking, make him feel healthier, enable him to smile more often and more con-

fidently, and align harmoniously with his engaging, unpretentious and down-to-earth personality. After exploring various options and possibilities, and taking into consideration all of Greg’s motivations—explicit and implicit, overt and subtle—we agreed that his ideal, customized smile solution would be comprised of two parts. First, we would whiten Greg’s entire smile with our Zoom in-office whitening to achieve a more even appearance in colour. Second, I would straighten his two misshapen front teeth by preparing them to accommodate two porcelain crowns that would address not only colour, but also position and shape discrepancies. I also made minor adjustments to Greg’s gums to build a more symmetrical and harmonious appearance. When we finished the comfortable, non-invasive and rapid treatment and Greg looked at his upgraded smile for the first time, it was exactly what we collectively envisioned long before we scheduled the treatment—back when all that mattered was why, instead of what. It was the authentic smile Greg was meant to have, at last brought to life in a celebration of artisan dentistry. “I must admit that having such a trusting relationship with a dentist is something I’ve never experienced and did not even think was possible. But Dr Mah is different,” Greg says. “He was never pushy. Actually, he never even asked me to consider fixing my teeth. It was something I
brought up on my own. Dr Mah took a great deal of time to understand what I wanted, and explained all of my options. I never felt hurried, or that he had more important things to do. And his staff was just as phenomenal and respectful of my needs and my time. They made me feel great. I’m extremely happy with my new smile. It’s natural, it’s healthy, and it’s exactly what Dr Mah said it would be. I’m smiling more today than I have for years.”
Dr Kelvin P Mah is driven to “enrich lives, one smile at a time.” He believes in helping people – not merely treating problems – and takes a dedicated, personal interest in the health, wellness and happiness of each individual patient. His award-winning Smile City Square Dental practice reflects an organic and zen-like atmosphere of warmth and relaxation. He is also a graduate of UBC’s prestigious Dental School and is an instructor with the Frontier Institute, which offers postgraduate programs in advanced cosmetic dentistry. LET’S GET IT ON: 3 STEPS TO BOOST YOUR (BUSINESS) LIBIDO By Allison Braun
R
unning a hot business is just like being a great lover. It’s all about knowing what turns you on, giving generously and taking action, action, action. Being in business can be a lot like being in a relationship. Your business libido can either be flowing freely or it can be a sad, droopy, non-existent thing that consumes your thoughts and energy. A business libido is defined as the zest, passion, inspiration and drive that compel you to take action and get what you want. Sadly, for most people that start a business out of passion, it either ends up being an expensive hobby or something that drains their libido. Countless women (and a few awesome men) have begun to express their frustration and faltering business libido. It can be estimated that most business owners are functioning at 5-7 out of 10 on the business libido scale. So, what does it take to feel totally turned on, revved up, fulfilled and ready for action in your business? The kind of business that causes you to pounce instead of rolling over and pretending to be asleep? Want to know what will get you to a 10?
HERE ARE THE TOP THREE WAYS TO AMP UP YOUR BUSINESS LIBIDO. 1. Quit it with the people-pleasing.
It’s time to let go of all the things you are sub-par at or don’t enjoy. Only focus on what truly lights you up and your best skills. It’s also time to quit living someone else’s life and running someone else’s version of a successful business. Time to design a business that’s the best you’ve ever had.
2. Only work with people you L-O-V-E!
It’s kind of like dating. Would you put up with dating someone that wasn’t a great fit? Someone that you didn’t feel energized and good around? The same goes for clients. If they aren’t the perfect fit for you, it means they are the perfect fit for someone else. In love, when you are
33

dating a whole bunch of the wrong people, it can block the path for the right one to come in. The same goes for business. Even if you’re scared that you won’t have “enough” money or clients, the more you stand true to your value, gifts and joy, the more those perfect people will find their way to you. It can be liberating to say no, and may even open the door to more perfect yeses, money and energy.
3. Magnify your “pop points” to stand out.
You have a unique blend of awesomeness. The special combo of talents, gifts and passions that no one else has just the way you do are your “pop points”. Once you get out of trying to please everyone, you can get out of generalized marketing and messages. You get to be focused, clear and stand out for exactly what you love the most! This also allows you to effortlessly attract more clients you love. Approach your “pop points” like makeup in photography or the film industry. It has to be a little dramatic in order to be visible. If you were to look in a mirror, it may seem a little intense, but when you see yourself on camera, it’s just enough to pop. The same thing goes in business. You’ve got to add a little oomph to that special combination of gifts you have. It’s fun, playful and allows you to reach more of your ideal people and have a bigger impact in the lives of those who need you most. Start taking action on these tips today to experience a special little boost in your business libido!

Tammy Dupuis founded Sugar’d Eco-Sweet Hair Removal in 2007. Her goal was to provide a safe waxing alternative for men and women using an all-natural sugar paste. From eyebrows to ankles, the sugar paste, or ‘halawa’ as it is known in Egypt, is set to change the standards of the hair removal industry. “Unlike other methods, our sugar paste is warm, never hot,” says Tammy. “It has quickly gained a reputation as the kindest hair removal product around.” The formula, based on sugar, lemon and water, is said to be so natural you could eat it. Sugar’d now has two locations, in Abbotsford and Chilliwack. www.sugard.ca

The Wedding Planner
Before starting her own business, Sharon Kawano graduated from UBC and worked as a realtor. But she quickly realized her passion for staging homes, rather than showing and selling them. Shortly after, she moved into the wedding industry, first with modest centerpieces, then incorporating linen and décor. Eventually, she was involved in the wedding process from start to finish. “Running my business through the eyes of a consumer is a standard I hold myself to and respect deeply,” Sharon says. “With that philosophy and extra-special attention to details, I was able to grow my business.” She quickly established a reputation within local wedding circuits as one of the most sought after decorators in the industry. www.kawanodecordesign.com
