GLORIOUS GREENS By Alyssa Bauman, Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Health Coach, M.A.
I
love green juice. It is the foundation of my day; the answer to my every worry (well mostly); my therapy in a glass; my secret to healthy eating and it will be your miracle energy pill and diet drink. If there is one thing you could do to make 2014 your best year yet, start drinking the greens. Green smoothies are green and leafy vegetables and fruit, blended with water. So simple, but so powerful! They will: • Boost your energy.
• Make your skin glow. • Tame your cravings for sweet or salty foods. Here’s Why I Love Them and Why You Will Too. Green smoothies are: Fibre Filled – Fruit and green leafy vegetables are packed with healthy fibre. Fibre helps digestion and eases elimination issues. Fibre also makes you feel full, which keeps you from making unhealthy food choices out of desperation.

Nutrient Dense – So many of us are carrying extra weight and eating a bit too much, but our body is still starving – not starving for more calories, but starving for nutrients. Green smoothies are nutrient rich. They’re packed with vitamins, minerals, amino acids (what protein is made of), and antioxidants (which help fight disease). The nutritional power of green smoothies does more than feed your body – it heals your body. Alkaline – Helping your body have an alkaline Ph level fights inflammatory-based diseases
such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis and autoim- Recipes mune diseases. Because green smoothies are Use organic produce whenever possible made of fresh fruits and vegetables they are an ideal anti-inflammatory food. Alyssa Favorite GoGo Juice
9 Ways to Fit Green Smoothies Into Busy Lives
Here’s how to prep these nutritional powerhouses in the midst of busy lives? Getting into the green smoothie habit is so much easier with these time-saving strategies. 1. Have the Basics on Hand. Ensure that the basic ingredients of green smoothies are staples on your grocery list so your refrigerator is always loaded with greens. 2. Keep Bananas in the Freezer. Peel overripe bananas and keep them in a plastic bag. These add sweetness and creaminess to any green smoothie. 3. Create Smoothie Packs. To prepare for several days, assemble 5 ziplocks filled with all the ingredients needed, except liquid. All that’s left to do is add liquid, blend and enjoy. 10 extra minutes of advanced prep time = 5 days worth of effortless smoothies. 4. Prepare the Night Before. Load the blender with desired ingredients the night before. Store in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, add liquid and blend. 5. Invest in Good Tools. Get a large chopping board, a sharp knife, salad spinner, and a good blender. I love my Vitamix – and use it 4 times a day sometimes.
Guidelines
6. There’s no “right” way to make a green smoothie – only what’s right for you. You want to be making green smoothies you love to drink. Yes, it may take a bit of getting used to drinking a glass of greens, but you’ll love the way it makes you feel. When I tell clients that they will be addicted to it, they look at me like I am an absolute lunatic. I just might be, but let me tell you every single one of my clients, every one, is addicted to the juice. Not such a bad vice to have. 7. The point of a green smoothie is to incorporate a boatload more greens (super nutrient dense food) and more fibre into your diet. 8. There are a lot of smoothies out there called green smoothies. However, many of them are fruit smoothies with a small handful of baby spinach thrown in. I encourage you to make your green smoothies very green, like the recipes below. It may take a bit of experimenting to make your ‘just-right’ green smoothie. Have patience and experiment. 9. Green smoothies come out super smooth in a high-speed blender (like a Vitamix – my favorite kind). Still, you can make your green smoothie in a regular blender. You just may need to cut up your veggies smaller and blend them for longer.

Vanity Insanity:
THE TRUTH ABOUT SKIN CARE By Amanda Beisel
O
ur skin is an organ – our largest organ in fact. It protects us from the world around us and without it we cannot exist. Yet for some reason, we still tend to view caring for our skin as vanity and not as necessity. Like brushing your teeth and visiting the dentist, your skin needs regular maintenance and care to stay healthy. Youthful skin is healthy skin and healthy skin is a result of proper care on a daily basis. This is achieved by topically feeding your skin essential vitamins and nutrients every day. The products you apply to your skin each day determine the health of your skin and the rate at which your skin will age. This, of course, is not the only factor - genetic predisposition and lifestyle choices play a role as well. A healthy diet, for example, will be reflected on your skin, though a healthy diet alone cannot provide your skin with all the essentials it needs. As we age, our small intestine becomes less effective at absorbing nutrients from the foods we eat. This means our skin’s need for topical skincare becomes even more essential. Failing to use skincare products on a daily basis will lead to what I call “Skin Starvation and Malnourishment” - just as your body would be malnourished from a lack of food. Skin starvation physically manifests itself as dull, unhealthy looking skin and premature aging. Falling into the Trap of Persuasive Marketing Campaigns Every day, we are bombarded with skincare commercials from large companies. They make vague and questionable claims about their newest skincare products, which can do things like “reverse the signs of aging”. This is the number one consumer mistake - purchasing a product based on the amount of advertising and marketing behind it. Large companies are able to invest heavily in marketing, but it does not mean the products are effective or safe. We have all, at some point, fallen for this type of advertising and, as a result, many people are understandably skeptical of skincare products. We choose foods that are beneficial for our body and avoid harmful preservatives and foods that lack nutrients. It is very important to apply the same principles when choosing skincare products. Don’t purchase products based on claims, but rather on formulation. Flip over the skincare bottle to read the ingredients just as you would a food item in a grocery store. Since understanding a skincare label isn’t always easy to the untrained eye, it is important to find a skincare professional you trust to guide you in this process. An experienced skincare professional can help you understand exactly what you are putting on your skin. Let’s face it; the claims on the front of the bottle are generally not a reliable source. Are you being misinformed? When we go to doctors, we expect them to have our best interests in mind. As a result, we don’t often question the recommendations that they make. It’s surprising to learn that some of the number-one-recommended products by dermatologists today contain parabens, petroleum, sodium lauryl sulfate and PEGs. These products lack the proper nutrients and essentials your skin needs, resulting in skin starvation and malnourishment. The go-to recommendations for acne are prescription topicals and internal medications. Prescription topicals do have their place in skincare, but they should not be used long term and are commonly overused. While using topical prescription medications, the skin has a great-

er need for topical nutrient and antioxidant support. These nutrients work to replenish and restore the skin while it is being treated with the harsher ingredients; this will preserve the integrity and health of your skin. It’s important to balance your treatment plans by consulting both a doctor and a skincare specialist. This will allow you to treat your skin issue while simultaneously ensuring your skin is staying nourished and can heal more effectively. Lastly, the lack of effective skincare education for estheticians and skincare consultants is resulting in poor skincare recommendations. The skincare companies themselves provide the majority of the education, which tends to be biased and vague. It is important to understand skin physiology and skin requirements to effectively consult on skincare products. Only professionals with a strong understanding of the skin’s function can consistently make appropriate recommendations that will meet your skin needs. Skincare Treatments vs. Skincare Products Whether it’s breaking a bad habit, learning a new skill, or losing those extra few pounds, we all crave immediate results. It’s this desire for quick and easy results that often leads us astray, and skincare is no exception. More and more people are investing a good deal of money in skin treatments while not paying close enough attention to their skincare products. The truth is, long term, positive changes in skin texture and appearance come from a daily skincare program that replenishes and provides the skin with topical essentials and nutrients. In the same way that adopting a healthy lifestyle program leads to positive body changes, adopting a consistent and healthy skincare regimen can help you reach your long-term skin goals. Quick fixes are always temporary for the skin, just as they are for body. When choosing to undergo esthetic treatments such as laser treatments, peels, skin needling, injectables and more, it’s critical to also invest in a great daily skincare program to supplement the treatments, maintain the results and work on the skin as a whole. Injectables, for example, will quickly and effectively diminish certain lines and add volume to the skin, but the results are very temporary. When combined with a healthy daily skincare program, the skin is nourished and fed, promoting healthy, great-looking skin with longevity. The SKN Clinic Mission At SKN Clinic, we want to disarm the product junkies, save the purists who are using nothing, and convert those who are being misinformed and put them on an effective skincare program that is safe. Our approach is to study the skin and skin health, dissect and research the ingredients the skin needs, and make recommendations based on this information. As a result, you’ll find a limited number of brands available at our clinic, and you may be surprised to see several of the most popular and well-branded skincare lines missing from our shelves. You will, however, discover some of the most effective and safe brands available today. Finding a trusted skin-care guide is not always an easy job. Many practitioners charge a large fee to simply sit down and discuss your skincare goals. At SKN Clinic we always offer complimentary consultations because it is our passion and our mission to help as many people as we can to achieve healthy, youthful, long-living skin.

- DRESSING FOR DATE NIGHT
By Dominique Hanke
D
ressing for date night in the winter is definitely a trickier task than on those breezy summer nights, when you can throw a cute pashmina, necklace and bangles over your favorite maxi and you are good for pretty much any event. It takes a lot more thought and destination is a huge factor. Nothing ruins a magical moment more than not being dressed for the weather, but we all still want to look our best and not rock the abominable snowman look in those all layers. Here are some great looks for those fun, winter date nights, to keep you looking cute but cozy!

3. ROMANTIC WALK
Whether your idea of culture is a wander through a museum, a night at the theatre, or catching a concert with your beau, all of these events require a similar thought where outfit comes in. You will want to keep warm in often poorly heated venues whilst still managing to work the cultured and classy style.
Layering always works best for warmth, but no one wants to look bulky. This jacket is perfect with its flattering silhouette. Its slightly nipped waist creates shape, whilst not being too form fitting, so you can still fit a sweater underneath. The cute toque literally tops the look, with a little bit of bling to keep things pretty. Outfit available from LOFT at Park Royal

This sweater is such a great piece, managing to perfectly blend practicality and style, here paired with these versatile pants.
Knowing that the only time you will be exposed to the elements is between the quick dash from the taxi to the door to the restaurant, you can afford to layer down a little. I love this heavy weight tapestry style skirt by LOFT. It is fun and classy. The shirt adds a pop of colour and the outfit is finished up with this beautiful cardigan, adding a little sparkle and an extra layer to keep the chill at bay.

ASK THE EXPERT
TAMMY M. TRUONG
Q. How do I take care of my eyelash extensions to make them last? A. Whether you have just experienced your very first pair of semi-
permanent lash extensions or you are a regular lash addict, you love the way these dramatic and gorgeous lashes enhance your natural beauty. So, let’s take care of these precious lashes so that they can last up to 5-6 weeks. Daily tips to care for your lash extensions: 1. After each face wash, roll toilet paper on your finger. Next, rest your lashes on the wrapped finger for a few seconds to soak water away. Last, use a lash brush to gently comb your lash extensions as you look down. Do not uproot them. 2. For those who do regular exercise and hot yoga, your skin will produce extra oil from sweating and may cause your lashes to slide out. To minimize this effect, use a small amount of 70% rubbing alcohol to remove any excess oil on your lashes. Caution: test first on your hand and remove excessive alcohol using a Q-tip. Then, dab it on your lashes to help clean excessive oil. Only do this once a week, maximum, or when your lashes touch your oily skin. The NovaLash Advantage The above tips work best with NovaLash eyelash extensions versus other competing lash glues. Award-winning, long-lasting, medical-grade and FDA approved lash extension glues have earned NovaLash its reputation as “the healthiest” professional eyelash extension system in the market today. NovaLash does not contain any detectable formaldehyde, making it very safe for your eyes. Formaldehyde can suck natural hydration from your lashes making them brittle and weak. NovaLash glue also adds flexibility to the lashes to withstand daily wear and provide longevity for every woman on the go. In Vancouver, Élan Beauty offers NovaLash extensions provided by expert technicians who have been extending lashes since 2006.
Tammy M. Truong is a certified beauty consultant specializing in medical esthetician PCA skincare, electrolysis, laser hair removal, permanent makeup, body contour and NovaLash eyelash extensions. DR. MATHEW MOSHER
Q:
How do I choose the right elective cosmetic treatments and surgery?
A: Bottom line - do your homework! It really is a great time if you want to look your best because there are so many effective treatments available as well as numerous locations and providers of these services. Unfortunately, with so many choices available, the selection process has become more difficult. As a Plastic Surgeon specializing in surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatment options, I believe the standard of care must include a consideration and discussion about all of your options. Only then can you make an informed decision. Many non-specialist providers of services like to segregate treatment options into “surgical” and “non-surgical”. Traditionally, plastic surgery is the gold standard for achieving the best cosmetic outcomes that last the longest. Surgery has also been associated with more risk, more downtime and more cost. A trend also exists to position nonsurgical treatments as less invasive, without risk and without downtime. Some misleading marketing efforts even argue that non-surgical cosmetic treatments can replace the need for cosmetic surgery. Although there have been tremendous advances in non-surgical treatments and technologies, the best approach for each patient requires a careful consideration of all of the options and all of the needs of each patient. On a daily basis, I discuss this range of alternatives with men and woman wanting to look their best, wanting value and wanting to feel like they have made an informed decision. For most patients, their Prescription for Beauty® involves discussion of both surgical and non-surgical strategies. Facial non-surgical treatments like Xeomin™, soft tissue fillers, fractional laser resurfacing and medical skincare can be tailored to achieve wonderful improvements. However, many patients better achieve their goals with a synergy of treatment strategies that may or may not involve surgery. When surgery is a preferred recommendation, patients are surprised at how easy surgical recovery can be and how affordable solutions are. All cosmetic treatments and surgeries have risks, costs and limitations. You owe it to yourself to be an informed consumer and learn all of your options before confidently moving towards looking your best.

ASK THE EXPERT
DR MARTIN BRAUN
Q: What can I do to maintain a healthy radiant glow to my face? I don’t want to look “fake” or “done” like actors and celebrities that go overboard. A: We are all born with lovely skin and a glowing face. Unfortunately,
most of us choose to do very little to maintain this face. Others go overboard and scare everyone else off by looking rather bizarre with their excessive procedures. You only have one face, and it will age at a rate determined by the amount of accumulated sun damage and your underlying genetics. Or you can choose to do something and give your skin a second chance! There are only four non-surgical categories that one can perform in order to age gracefully, appear refreshed and vibrant: 1. Neuromodulators 2. Fillers 3. Light based therapy 4. Effective topical skincare, including SPF Neuromodulators are injectable products like Botox and Xeomin. When done properly, the result is natural with softer wrinkles, or perhaps none at all if one starts at an earlier age. My patients typically come in for a ten-minute appointment twice a year, and they look great! No one knows that they are doing anything unless they inform others! Volume loss is the hallmark of the facial aging process. Unless you are very obese, you will lose the fat under the skin that provides structural support to prevent sagging and the sunken look so prevalent in athletic people. Natural fillers simply restore the youthful contours that we lose with aging. Unfortunately, some people go overboard, and give the entire process a bad name. Again, it is a completely natural look when appropriately done. Our skin also loses collagen, and we see red and brown spots from broken capillaries and sun damage. The end result is a yellow, sallow complexion that traps light. There are many laser therapies that can restore the natural glow and radiance of youth without any downtime. What is effective skincare? People have been brainwashed into thinking cleanser, toner, moisturizer is all they require for healthy skin. They have no idea what ingredients are in their skincare products. They need to learn about proper reflective SPF, retinol concentrations and antioxidants that actually work, and finally DNA repair enzymes, which will be the hot topic of 2014. You can actually repair cellular damage, and even reverse and prevent cancerous changes in the skin with topical DNA repair enzymes derived from plants. I use it everyday. ASK THE EXPERT
DR WILLIAM MCGILLIVRAY
Q: Over the past few years, I notice I am looking increasingly tired despite my good health and natural energy. I recently lost some weight, which was great for my figure, although my face is now looking worse! I am familiar with treatments such as Botox and fillers, but I have seen results that looked unnatural and that is not “me.” What can I do to achieve a more youthful and healthy appearance without changing my natural face? A: A natural, rested appearance consistent with youthful vitality and overall good health is a goal I share with my patients. There is both an art and a science to this. The key is strongly understanding facial anatomy and underlying causes of facial changes, using the most appropriate technologies in the right combination and then respecting the natural attributes of a unique face. Best outcomes not only restore a younger, healthier appearance - they also slow the aging process. Facial aging includes dynamic lines, fat loss and superficial skin changes, all of which are greatly accelerated by sun exposure. Addressing facial aging will usually involve an appropriate amount of a neuromodulator, such as with Xeomin® Cosmetic, BOTOX COSMETIC® or Dysport® treatments, to help soften frown lines. By experienced physicians, neuromodulators are used in conjunction with dermal fillers to normalize or smooth facial shape by restoring volume to the specific fat compartments which have lost volume. In this way, we not only restore natural volume to the cheeks, but also to the temples and forehead lines. Safe and advanced dermal fillers, including hyaluronic acid products and Radiesse®, are recommended for this. Finally, specialized devices employing laser, radiofrequency or focused ultrasound energy can resurface and tighten the skin for a natural outcome with little-tono recovery and great improvements to skin health. My best advice, to ensure safety and satisfaction, is to seek out ethically focused physicians who are well experienced and hold the best interests of their patients in mind. Dr. McGillivray is one of Canada’s most accomplished and well-respected cosmetic physicians. His commitment to excellence has been recognized by his peers both nationally and internationally. Dr. McGillivray is actively involved in original clinical research as well as being a national preceptor and speaker for various lasers, Botox Cosmetic and dermal fillers. He co-founded Pacific Dermaesthetics in downtown Vancouver and pursued his dream of founding a clinic offering patients an integrated approach to skin health. DR ANITA FOFIE
Q: I keep hearing about parabens in cosmetics. What are they and should I be avoiding them?
A: Great question, and very controversial. But before you go throwing out hundreds of dollars of skincare products, deodorants, and cosmetics, let’s go over a few facts. Fact: parabens are beneficial. Yes, parabens serve to control the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungus in personal care products. Without them, that mascara you love would be overrun with nasty bugs, which could be more immediately harmful to your health than any parabens might be. Myth: parabens cause cancer. Fact: parabens have been shown to be present in breast cancer tissue. However, the study that reported this finding did not test for parabens in non-breast cancer patients for fair comparison. The study also made no claims that the presence of parabens caused cancers. Fact: parabens do mimic estrogen in the body and certain cancers are estrogen sensitive. However, the estrogen effect of most parabens is about 10,000 times weaker than the soy milk in your Starbuck’s latte. The US FDA and our Health Canada equivalent in a comprehensive cosmetic ingredient review have stated a safe paraben exposure limit of 25% in personal care products. In most of today’s cosmetics, paraben levels range from 0.01 to 0.3%. Myth: all natural or organic means totally safe. Plants and herbs are natural, but can have very potent effects on our hormones. Licorice root, ginseng, and red clover have all been shown to induce the growth of cancer cells in the lab. Myth: parabens are unnatural chemicals. The fact is foods such as flax, berries, cucumbers, carrots and soy beans contain parabens and other agents that mimic estrogens. Should you avoid parabens? Well, it’s a personal choice much like being vegan. But whatever choice you make, now you have some of the facts. DR SPENCE PENTLAND
Q: Why do so many people struggle with weight gain? A: There is no mystery these days as to why people gain unwanted
weight. It is widely known that excessive food consumption combined with inactivity will cause an increase in fat and a decrease in muscle mass and health. So then, why is weight gain still something so many people struggle with? In spite of our knowledge, why do so many of us have poor eating habits and only break a sweat on occasion? Perhaps there is some confusion due to the abyss of rhetoric about dieting and food. To keep it simple, colour-code it. Eat lots of colourful food, and less brown, grey and white food. In general, colourless food is low in essential nutrients, which results in frequent hunger as your body yearns for the nutrition not being provided. If you give your body what it needs, its cravings will be for more of the same rather than processed empty calories that make you sluggish and promote further poor choices. With regard to unhealthy weight and all other physical ailments, the philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is to treat the root of the problem rather than the symptoms. The cause of all disease will fall into one of the following categories: improper eating habits, overwork, lack of physical activity or too much of it, external evils (virus, bacteria, toxins, etc), or excesses of emotion, climate, or trauma. In order to address the root of your overeating or laziness, you need to identify its cause and address it. If your emotions are the root cause, which they often are, counting calories will get you nowhere. Instead, try counseling, coaching, or hypnosis to help you manage. And if emotions are not the root cause, with time they often become a contributing one, so having someone to talk to can be very useful. If your job is stressful, or your relationship is an unhappy one, these things will be reflected in your physicality as well and taking steps to improve them will have a positive impact. In conjunction with addressing emotional issues, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes the importance of cultivating willpower to overcome conditions such as overeating and laziness. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine supplement the systems necessary for being proactive in one’s life and making healthy choices for mind and body. With time, discipline and simple small commitments, the trajectory of your entire life can change. A healthy life is a fulfilling life and everyone deserves that. A Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, Dr Spence Pentland’s clinical practice has focused on fertility issues since 2004. His Vancouver clinic, Yinstill Reproductive Wellness, aids couples in realizing their dreams of healthy families. For more info, visit www. drspencepentland.com or www.yinstill.com.

ou might recognize Fiona Forbes as the host of Vancouver’s award-winning entertainment talk show The Rush. Or you might have followed her career through it numerous earlier stages that have included work on the long-running Urban Rush, Daytime on the Rogers Network and Breakfast Television on City-TV. Perhaps you have seen one of her many guest appearances or encountered her during her extensive work for a wide range of charities including the CKNW Orphan’s Fund, Pink Shirt Day, Variety Club, Timmy’s Telethon and Easter Seals. Wherever you have seen her, there is no question this British Columbia Institute of Technology journalism graduate has made an impact, both locally and internationally. Fresh had the opportunity to talk with Fiona about her life, her work, and keeping it all together in a hectic industry.
WE SPOKE FIRST ABOUT THE FRENETIC PACE THAT A SUCCESSFUL MEDIA CAREER ENTAILS: “I am just coming off of my busiest month in years. there is almost no opportunity to stop being connected, completely engaged with work and the various activities that surround it.
“The one time that I do have a chance to turn off the phone for an hour is when I take my dog for a walk. That time is so precious…it’s the only time I really unplug.”
OF COURSE, CONSTANTLY MAINTAINING THAT KIND OF PACE MUST TAKE A TOLL. FIONA SPEAKS OF THE CHALLENGE TO KEEP LIFE IN BALANCE:
“Balance is elusive. In fact, it would be fair to say that keeping the various aspects of my life in balance is a constant struggle. “One of the things that helps tremendously is keeping myself in shape. Making time for fitness is a vital part of my schedule. I train with Tommy Europe, and having a trainer helps to keep me accountable during those times when it would be easy to let things slide. I also run regularly as well. I find it helps to keep me grounded.”
IT HELPS, OF COURSE, THAT FIONA ENJOYS HER WORK AS MUCH AS SHE DOES.

“I have been working for over 20 years on TV, but it stays new for me. I am always ready for a change, and the variety of people that I meet and work with means that I am frequently presented with a new learning experience. Every week brings new challenges. “It has been a year since my co-host left, but it is only since September that I have been hosting the show alone. It has been a huge challenge for me. For the show as well it has been a big shift, but a good one. It has opened the opportunity to do longer format interviews, for example, which bring added depth to what we are doing. “I want to stay always open to new things, new challenges. That will keep me growing as a performer and a person and expanding my perspective. Some new chances are a lot of fun, like I’m going to be on Millionaire Matchmaker – something outside of the range of things I have done before.”
who has experienced bullying. I know I do. And this is an opportunity to raise a positive voice and say that we as a community won’t tolerate bullying any more. “I have the chance to MC ladies’ luncheon on February 17th and I really enjoy this event and the positive energy it creates. There are other things throughout the year as well like the CKNW Orphan’s Fund, Timmy’s Telethon, and the Easter Seals and their work with Camp Squamish. It can’t do everything, mind you, but love to be involved where I can.” As much as Fiona finds her life and work exciting – and fulfilling – she does admit that she would like to catch her breath after a particularly challenging 2013. “I am really looking forward to some stability in 2014 after a year of change. At the same time, I can’t wait to see what the new year brings!”
IT ISN’T POSSIBLE TO TALK TO FIONA FOR LONG WITHOUT THE CONVERSATION TURNING TO HER ENGAGEMENT WITH HER COMMUNITY AND HER WORK FOR VARIOUS CHARITIES.
Wednesday, February 26, 2014 marks the Seventh Annual Pink Shirt Anti-Bullying Day. For 2014, Boys & Girls Clubs, schools, businesses, organizations and individuals across Canada will be participating in Pink Shirt Day and with additional partners, this stands to be the biggest anti-bullying awareness day in North America – if not the world! Springing from a spontaneous response by two Nova Scotia high school students to seeing a Grade 9 boy in their community bullied for wearing a pink shirt, Pink Shirt Day is a time to make the statement loud and clear: we as a society will not tolerate bullying anywhere! See more at: www.pinkshirtday.ca
“My work has given me opportunities that most people just don’t have. In return for the way in which the community has rewarded me, I feel I should say “Yes!” when I am asked to contribute in some way. We all have a responsibility to be a part of what is happening in our communities – helping to meet the needs that we become aware of. “One event that is very close to my heart is Pink Shirt Day, the huge event in February that takes a stand against bullying. It seems as though almost everyone has some kind of personal connection with someone

A FEW OF “MY FAVOURITE THINGS” By Dr Kelvin P. Mah
W
hile every holiday season is different and exciting, it’s nice to know that there are a few “old standards” that we can count on, year after year: things like cheerful lights and decorations, massive meals followed by abundant leftovers, and sure enough, an annual viewing of The Sound of Music! Now, my goal here isn’t to spark a Julie Andrews vs. Carrie Underwood debate. Nor am I going to try my hand at singing, yodeling or pirouetting atop a mountain. Instead, I’d simply invite you to send a few minutes with me as I, inspired by the unforgettable Von Trap family (and my own, pictured here), introduce you to “A Few of my Favourite Things!”
• My Amazing Team
My list of favourite things starts with my truly amazing team. We’re more than just professional colleagues. We’re a caring family who share an unwavering commitment to delivering a fabulous and unforgettable patient experience. We’re also constantly finding ways to improve through workshops, leadership training, and other methods. It’s truly an honour to work with such incredible, dedicated people each day.
• My Unique Consulting Room
As some readers may already know, my consultation room is my favourite place here at Smile City Square Dental! I have meticulously designed it to provide patients with a soothing, relaxing and serene environment where they can chat at length about their concerns, goals and dreams. Indeed, investing quality time to know and appreciate each patient’s personality has always been one of my core commitments, and my unique consultation room is the ideal place to start that special dialogue and rewarding relationship.
now I’ll highlight two of my favourites: CEREC and Zoom! inoffice whitening. With CEREC, I can digitally scan your tooth, design and mill a restoration out of a solid block of ceramic, all in the same visit. There are no unpleasant impressions, no temporary fillings and no need for a second appointment. As well, CEREC restorations are amongst the most durable, comparable to gold. And when it comes to a dazzling smile, in my view Zoom! in-office whitening is hands down the easiest, fastest and most cost-effective way to dramatically enhance a smile.
• My Incredible Patients
And of course, no list of my favourite things would be complete without celebrating my incredible patients! Each one has a unique, fascinating story to tell. It’s a privilege to be invited into their world, and entrusted to use my artisan skill and insight to find, create and reveal their authentic smile -- which is the smile they were born to enjoy and share.
Putting it All Together
Ultimately, while all of my favourite things may look somewhat different on the surface, it’s easy to see that they’re all connected by a unifying theme, which is to enrich lives, one smile at a time by creating an unforgettable experience that elevates my patients on every level: body, mind and soul. Indeed, this is what inspires me each day, fills me with immense joy and gratitude, and drives me to constantly improve. And just as happily, unlike those abundant holiday leftovers, it’s something that I’ll never grow weary of – because it’s an experience that, astonishingly, keeps on getting better and better. That’s what makes it my “most favourite thing” of all…and always will!
• Energizing Study Groups
One of the things I love most about dentistry is that there’s always something new, interesting and exciting to learn. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that one of my favourite things is participating in energizing study groups with my peers where we discuss – and yes, sometimes vigorously debate -- advanced therapies, emerging methodologies, and best practices in patient-focused care. Right now I’m honored to be an instructor at the renowned Frontier Dental Institute, where I’m involved in teaching dentists advanced smile techniques.
• Leading Edge Technologies like CEREC and Zoom! In-Office Whitening
While I could spend an entire article on the incredible, leading edge technology that I use each day to serve my patients, for

Perfect Brows By Heather White
B
rows have the ability to communicate without words, beautify without makeup and beat the clock without a scalpel! Eyebrows are a too often neglected area of many a woman’s beauty regimen. With eyebrows being hot news, it’s time we attended to those hairy beasts, or lack of hair in some cases, to take control of those assets and make the most of them. The eyebrow is the one element we can change to recalibrate that balance and proportion on the face. Look at brows in magazines, and be realistic about what you could achieve. It’s always best to let your eyebrows grow for at least 4 to 6 weeks; put the tweezers away and cultivate those hairs. Then seek a professional brow artist, someone who really knows how to tame, tease and shape those brows to the max. I very often ask clients, “What do you like about your brows? And what don’t you like?” I get them to show me in the mirror, and then I advise on what we can do to achieve perfect brows. You may have to cultivate them, and it’s sometimes necessary to come in every 4 weeks while you’re in growing mode to establish the right shape. It’s very tempting to start tweezing odd hairs, and that’s very often how people make mistakes and we have a brow homicide on our hands. Over the years, the most common problem is over-plucked brows. If you’re lucky and it’s a recent incident, we can recover by growing them back in, but if it was done a long time ago, we have to be realistic and the only option is semi-permanent. I know this terrifies a lot of you, but if it’s done properly with natural looking hair strokes, it can take years off you. Over the years, I have perfected the natural looking semi-permanent brow by utilizing as much of the natural hair as possible. This is the perfect treatment for those with hereditary scarce brows, over-pluckers, people who don’t like their brow shape, or those recovering from medical treatment that has caused hair loss and want to sport a new brow. Eyebrows on the catwalks are strong and defined, and this is a look that will be carried on throughout winter. More people are asking for power brows – a darker, fuller, stronger, more defined look. It’s very fashionable for blondes to have darker brows now too. Look at London and LA. Favourite celebrity brows are those of Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox – both of whom have full and defined brows. Remember; brows are the focal point of your face and, therefore, should always be perfectly preened to accentuate your features. That’s why, with the power brow being a hot fashion accessory, I’m a huge fan of tinting brows for fuller-looking, defined shaping that can take years off you. Colours can be mixed so it’s possible to create a softer colour, but tinting lasts for up to 4 weeks as the hair on the brows is very different from the hair on your head. BROW ALERT! Please do not get your hairdressers to put hair dye on your brows. It’s too high a concentration of peroxide on your
delicate face for one thing, and I’ve seen some very strange colours from people doing this. Also, peroxide irritates the skin. People always ask me the best method for removing hairs: waxing, threading, or tweezing? I prefer to use different removal methods for different types of hairs. Do not exfoliate the skin or use products containing retinol, AHA’s or fruit acids around your eyebrows for at least a week before and after treatment so as not to thin the skin and make it more sensitive to waxing. If you have taken Roacutaine or any other skin thinning medication in the past, you must wait at least 6 months before having waxing on the eyebrows. Waxing is great for high precision shaping. We use only a tiny amount, it does not pull the
skin any more than threading or sugaring if it’s done properly, and the technician should always support the skin. I like threading for vellus hair, the peach fuzz, and tweezing to remove any hairs that have been left behind or may be too short for waxing. This is high precision brow shaping. Make the most of your twin peaks, cultivate, and seek professional advice and you too can have celebrity brows. GLUTEN FREE
BASICS By Dr Allana Polo
“Gluten Free” seems to be the rage right now, whether people have Celiac disease, are gluten intolerant, or recently read Wheat Belly. People follow a gluten free diet for many reasons, but not all are medically necessary; nor are all gluten free diets followed properly. There are certain conditions that require one go gluten free, and these are confirmed via medical testing. Other people just feel better once gluten is eliminated from the diet. CELIAC DISE ASE This is the most well-known condition that requires a gluten free diet. The exact cause is unknown; however, we know that there is a genetic link. It is an autoimmune condition, where the immune system starts attacking the inner lining of the small intestine in response to eating gluten. Celiac affects approximately 1% of the population, but this number
is increasing. Symptoms include abdominal cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, osteoporosis and failure to thrive among others. Please talk to your doctor if you suspect Celiac disease. The gold standard for diagnosing Celiac is via an intestinal biopsy. GLUTEN A LLERGY A gluten allergy can wreak havoc on a person’s health and quality of life. Roughly 5% of individuals have a true allergy. A food allergy is an abnormal (IgE) immunologic response triggered by food. Symptoms can range from vomiting and diarrhea to hives, eczema or life threatening anaphylaxis. GLUTEN SENSITIVITY/INTOLERANCE Gluten sensitivity is an altered immune response as well; however, it is

an IgG reaction, which causes gastrointestinal problems like bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain and gas. Many people who are diagnosed with ‘IBS’ actually just have a gluten sensitivity! More systemic reactions are very common as well, such as fatigue, headaches, foggy thinking, weight gain, insomnia or mood alterations. Food sensitivity testing can be done through your Naturopathic Doctor. An elimination diet is also an extremely helpful tool to help diagnose gluten sensitivity. You avoid gluten (or any other potential food triggers) for 4-6 weeks and then try introducing it back into your diet and note the symptoms that occur. If you are gluten sensitive, you will notice right away. When the removal of gluten from the diet alleviates your symptoms, and reintroduction causes them to occur again, that is a sure sign there is a problem with gluten. Figuring out what foods to eat and which to avoid while going gluten free can be quite difficult. My rule of thumb: Don’t try to replace gluten foods with the “gluten free” version. Usually, the gluten free alternative is actually more unhealthy for you with more added sugar, fat and artificial ingredients. Instead, find the whole or real food alternatives to your favorite foods. For instance, instead of a sandwich, try a lettuce wrap or instead of pasta, try zucchini noodles. Instead of toast or a bagel for breakfast, try a protein smoothie. These lists will help to simplify gluten and gluten free choices: Foods that are unsafe to eat • Wheat flour • Spelt • Rye • Oats • Barley • Couscous • Bran Note: Beware of hidden gluten found in things like teriyaki sauce, soya sauce, salad dressings, seasonings and spices, soup stock etc. Make sure to read your labels carefully! Also, wheat-free products do not mean gluten free, so again, labels and ingredient lists are very important

20 14-MAKE IT YOUR BEST YEAR EVER!
THE WELLNESS SHOW IS COMING
28 VANCOUVER ISSUE 11 28 || FRESH FRESH VANCOUVER ISSUE 22
M
ake 2014 your best year ever by finding more energy, creating balance, celebrating your accomplishments, looking great, and banishing stress. Here are some tips from The Wellness Show, taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre, February 14, 15, & 16, to help you with your goals. Discover more energy. Eat a diet that is rich in complex carbohydrates and lean protein. This will help you to feel consistent energy across your day. One great idea is to snack on nuts and seeds or nut and seed butters, like almond, cashew, chia, sesame, flax, sunflower, pumpkin, and hemp. An easy way to incorporate more of these into your diet is to sprinkle a little RA Energy (a blend of sprouted buckwheat, chia and hemp seeds in a shaker) on your salads, add it into your smoothies, or just about anything else. Focus on fats that are unsaturated, and are sources of Omega fatty acids. Omegas aid in hormone production, help protect you from heart disease and certain forms of cancers, and make your hair shiny! Flax seed oil is rich in Omega 3’s and 6’s. Alligga Flaxseed Cooking Oil is great to add to your morning smoothie, to make a salad dressing with, or even to cook with. Mix up your workout routine. Not only will it help to banish boredom (and are you motivated to work out if you feel bored?), but it’s also good for you to work different groups of muscles. One new workout trend that’s hot right now is Jumping. Using a mini-trampoline, Jumping incorporates cardio and strength training in a low-impact, fun workout. Sasha Fitness is the premiere teacher of Jumping in Vancouver, and you can experience her workout at The Wellness Show. Banish Stress. In 2014, more than ever, we need to make time to take care of ourselves. As women, we often find ourselves caring for our families and children, aging parents, and friends, all while running a household and holding down a full-time job! Self-care needs to be part of the equation, or burn out and stress-related sickness can’t be far away. Learn to meditate, sign up for a yoga class, or hit the seawall for a walk with a friend. Better yet—book yourself a massage or a spa day! Look great. It can be really hard to find time, in the morning madness, to pull together the perfect outfit, and do our hair and makeup. A simple morning routine with the right products is the way to go. In addition, you want to make sure that what you put on your body is not going to be harmful. At The Wellness Show, you’ll be able to try organic, cruelty-free cosmetics and skincare from Arbonne and Conscious Cosmetics, and you’ll also learn anti-aging tips and tricks from companies like NuSkin and Merz Aesthetics. Learn some new healthy recipes for your family. If you’re always looking for new inspiration for quick, healthy dinner ideas from your favourite celebrity chefs, The Wellness Show is the place to be! We’ll be featuring cooking demos from Trevor Bird (Fable), Karen McAthy (Graze), Brian Skinner (The Acorn), Hidekazu Tojo (Tojo’s), and Curtis (The Parker).

People have always been a little shy when it comes to talking about male grooming, but I’m here to set the record straight about the art of manscaping both upstairs, and down. It should not be intimidating, or scary, and with a few simple do’s and don’ts on the subject, things will seem a lot less fuzzy... so to speak.

anscaping – a term used to define male grooming above and below the belt; a fine art form exclusive to men; the continued upkeep of exceptional hygiene and strategic hair removal as they pertain to the male body.

Getting regular cuts with your hairstylist can lessen the amount of effort you have to put into your manscaping. I recommend getting a full cut every 4-6 weeks. If you are a little extra hairy, I suggest stopping in every 2-3 weeks for a neck trim. A good stylist should be able to clean up that neck beard (it’s there, even if you can’t see it), trim your ear hairs, and even groom those stray eyebrow hairs. Trust me, if I can see them, everyone can too. Your stylist can also give you great tips on how to maintain your look at home, and advise you on the correct products to use. Your stylist can also help you achieve the perfect beard shape for your face. Knowing how to balance your facial hair with your overall personal look can really tie everything together. For example, an unkempt beard may be balanced with a slick polished hairstyle, or a clean, button-down shirt.

Buy the right tools!
Make sure to buy the right tool for the job. In order to properly shape or get rid of unwanted hair, investing in the right tools can make all the difference. A disposable razor and shaving cream just won’t cut it. Invest in a quality electric trimmer (my personal favorite is the Braun Series 7), a good set of tweezers from Tweezerman, a Panasonic nose hair trimmer, and perhaps a small pair of scissors.
Trim your chest!
No one needs to see hair creeping over your shirt collar, or poking between your buttons. Use your electric trimmer to shorten the hair to your personal preference. Remember to start with a longer guard attachment because you can always go shorter. The point is to manage the hair, not to completely remove it... unless the hair is on your back. Then you have full permission to completely remove it, permanently, with laser hair removal.
MANSCAPING DON’TS Don’t overdo it!
When it comes to male grooming, remember that less is more. You are, after all, a man. Men have hair. Resist the urge to overly shape your brows. This is a big no-no. Tweezing those random, unruly hairs is perfectly fine, but anything beyond that should be dealt with by a trusted professional, and you should proceed with caution.
Don’t use at-home waxes or creams!
This is not the time for DIY. Stick with what you know. More often than not, at-home waxes and hair removal creams will create more of a mess, and can actually leave you with some nasty rashes, or burns. Men’s hair is typically coarser and stronger than women’s hair, so if you do need to have waxing services done, please save yourself the trouble and have things professionally waxed. Back hair and shoulder hair can easily be removed with minimal pain and suffering if done properly by a pro.
Don’t go bare, down there!
Remember, the art of manscaping is about controlling and shaping one’s hair. Don’t shave any harsh lines into your body hair. An artificial boundary of where your hair begins and where it ends is not going to fool anyone. Keep things tidy and make your efforts look natural. Be sure to make good use of the guard attachments on your trimmer, and you should have no trouble at all. Unless you are a swimmer or a stripper, most people will agree that removing everything just makes you look a little too naked. These are all just guidelines, and everyone will find their personal preference and comfort levels when it comes to manscaping. Including manscaping as part of your overall hygiene routine can help you look and feel your best. You could even enlist the help of your partner and get their opinions on your manscaping. We all have preferences, and it might be nice to know what your partner prefers. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? Curtis Hunter is a stylist at Moods Hair Salon in Yaletown. With 14 years of experience in the hairstyling industry, he has created a devoted and loyal following of clients and fans. When he isn’t behind the chair working with clients, Curtis is actively pursuing his other passions which include hair-styling for magazines and photo shoots.
