BeautyTreatments
FROM AROUND THE WORLD
By Cadi Jordan
B
eauty treatments come in many different forms, especially when it comes to traveling the world. Some of these treatments may seem mysterious and a bit odd, but nonetheless they have their purposes. Most of these treatments make use of the native plants and materials that are found in each country and have been around for centuries. Some of the methods are so popular they have caught on in other areas of the world or are added to beauty products. Here I share with you a journey around the world in the land of beauty treatments. Vietnam, Japan and Asia - Many have heard of the fish that eat the dead skin off your feet. This is a beauty ritual and treatment that is done in many Asian countries. Individuals put their feet in the water and small fish nibble the dead skin off leaving the new and clean skin underneath. This beauty treatment has been featured on TV shows including Oprah, several news shows, and most recently on The Bachelor. Japan is also known for their use of nori, which is seaweed. Nori contains iodine, which is something that is consumed internally and used in vitamins that give Japanese women the long lustrous locks that we often see. The Japanese have also become well known for bird dropping facial masks to help individuals remove skin from their face. The mask of the nightingale containing nightingale droppings is very well known in Japan and may be found at many beauty salons throughout the region. I’m not sure you could get me to try this one! If you prefer, the Japanese have added a red wine pool to a local resort menu. It can reverse the signs of sun damage and firm the skin, so they claim. After all, grapes are also an antioxidant! A giant bottle keeps the pool refreshed throughout the day. Japan is also known for the fire facial. Towels are soaked in alcohol and their homemade concoctions, applied to the body and then set on fire. Or you may choose to keep your youthful skin with a 24-karat gold facial treatment?
Claims are that it will boost cell renewal and is also an antioxidant! Russia has an interesting spa treatment where individuals hit their skin with dried branches from the white birch, oak or eucalyptus trees. This is said to stimulate the circulatory system and is followed by a sauna and massage. The treatment dates back to the early 1900’s. Much like the Russians, Europe, Ukraine and Macedonia use banyas that exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Birch branches are used to increase sweat and circulation. This is a longstanding tradition among European Jews. The use of felt hats is also part of this beauty treatment to protect the head from the intense heat. Really? The Chinese first adopted hot stone massage as therapy. This is something that gave relief to individuals suffering from a variety of maladies and has been incorporated in spas throughout the world. Those who have used these treatments, including the Hawaiians and the native Americans, have sworn about the relaxing effects of hot stone massage for years. Hot stones are placed on various pressure points on the body for a relaxing effect and treatments now incorporate the use of cold stones for circulatory benefits as well. Chilean women use the antioxidants in red grapes as a beauty treatment that gives antioxidant support to the skin. Specifically it is the properties of the red grapes that are used for maximum results. Chilean’s make a paste of red grapes along with two tablespoons of flour and apply it to the face. Today in our western culture, the antioxidant properties of red grapes are found in many main stream skincare lines. Italy has long used olive oil and yogurt applied to the hair and thoroughly washed out to give hair a beautiful sheen and shine. Olive oil as a conditioner is used by many Mediterranean cultures and seems to be something has been giving a sheen to women’s hair for years. Stimulate your metabolism and boost immunity the Italian way. This treatment consists

of being wrapped in hay and soaking in a hot water bed. And we thought hay was for horses! In the Dominican Republic, the use of garlic is something well known to keep nails strong. The secret is to chop up some garlic and let it stew for a few days. Then add the garlic juice to a bottle of clear nail polish and have a polish that will keep nails strong and healthy for days and weeks to come. I can’t imagine the smell! Swedish women attribute their healthy and glowing skin to consumption of plenty of healthy antioxidant-bearing fish and berries. The berries are full of antioxidants and can help to bring a healthy glow to skin all year round. Many people admire the fresh faces and the glowing skin of the Swedes who also seem to have the most beautiful skin. The Swedes, interestingly enough, also use saunas that are used to rid the body of toxins. The heat gets down to the core and sweating brings out the toxins. To get the effect of a sauna at home, individuals recommend using a handful of rock salts, adding a dash of olive oil and approximately 10 drops of eucalyptus oil. This mixture can be rubbed all over your body and then finish with cold water. This is one way you can mimic the effects of a Swedish sauna at home. The Swedes are also famous for their Swedish or deep tissue massage technique that is found in spas, wellness centers and health clubs all over the world. Women in France are known to take meticulous care of their skin all year long, which means many facials. Mashed cherries and pomegranate seeds are used for at-home facial treatments that began in ancient times. Again, these are naturally derived from foods that are known to be high in antioxidants. In Greece, women eat a maritime diet that is high in omega 3 oils. Their diet nourishes the skin and makes the skin less likely to look dried out. They also use effective sunscreens to protect them from the damaging rays of the sun. These are some of the things they use as part of their beauty rituals. They also say that their
high use of olive oil keeps their skin smooth and less likely to show wrinkles. Ayurveda is from India and is an ancient philosophy of living based on your body constitution, or what they call your dosha. Many different herbs, oils and plants are used for a variety of health-based treatments based on what your body needs. Ayurveda has been implemented in spa treatments throughout North America. Australia is famous for it’s paw paw treatment made from the paw paw bush, which is a great treatment that can be used to heal sunburn, rashes and cracked lips. It is one that has been used for centuries and is a staple in many Australian creams, lotions and gels. It allows individuals to use natural ingredients to heal skin issues and blemishes. Another secret of the Aussies is to use yarrow root. Yarrow root can prevent stretch marks and has many moisturizing and hydrating properties. It is a used as an anti-inflammatory, which can help to calm the skin of facial breakouts, redness or other issues that may be affecting it. The use of milk baths in Egypt has been around since the time of Cleopatra. They are said to make the skin smooth and white. According to tradition, simply two cups of powered milk added to a bath at night can make skin soft, smooth, manageable and soft. This is one treatment that is often recommended for skin and has been adopted into many cultures for a ‘milk bath’ treatment inclusive of essential oils. In South America, all parts of the avocado are used for beauty treatments. Avocado is high in fat, oil and vitamin E. Virtually all parts of the avocado can be used for skin and hair treatments. This is one treatment that has been used consistently for years. Simply mash the avocado and apply to the area of the body or the hair that you wish to treat. In more western cultures, avocado oil is an ingredient for skincare products. Moroccan argan oil is something that has gotten a great deal of positive press lately as being one of the best conditioners you can use for hair, but the people of Northern Africa, and particularly Morocco, where this is harvested, make Moroccan argan oil a great beauty treatment for hair. Spanish women rinse their hair with cranberry juice to bring out natural highlights. This works great on brunettes. Simply add onequarter cup of cranberry juice to hair when washing it. Then rinse. It brings out a natural color and adds sheen to the hair. Blondes may not want to use this method, however, as it can turn their hair pink. Olive oil, as you would expect, has been used for generations in Spain. It is used for its natural sheen and is a great and inexpensive conditioner for hair. Spa treatments in Turkey include taking a dip in a gigantic hot tub! Only after the bathing is complete does an individual get a massage. Saunas may also be a part of this treatment and may or may not include a massage after. Anyone up for a tattoo? Or should I say, Tittoo? This technique is not for the faint of
heart and has been sweeping the UK. Local anesthetic is required and yes... it is a tattoo to darken the nipple area. Or if you prefer, in London, you add organic bull sperm to your hair treatment to help repair and hydrate for shiny locks? Are you stressed? You can always unwind with a snake massage from Indonesia. If getting up close and personal with a python can’t get you into a full state of relaxation I don’t know what will? This is definitely a unique treatment that provides an adrenalin rush like no other. Indonesia is dishing out other treatments such as beer bath massage and massages by practitioners dressed in gorilla suits. Not sure how that converts to a beauty treatment! West African’s enjoy the use of shea butter, which is now incorporated into many western products. It has been used in Africa for years as an anti-wrinkle treatment. This particular product also softens skin and smoothes it.
Israeli women living in the areas along the Dead Sea have long used the mud to make a facial mask. They apply this to the face to strip away impurities from the body when it is washed off. Dead Sea salts are also said to be beneficial for the skin. They also use non-venomous snakes for massage treatment. No matter how we look at it, women around the world love their beauty treatments. Some the western culture has adopted and some we may choose to leave behind. Which treatments would you rather take on as part of your regimen? HOT SPRING HAIR TRENDS FOR
2014
By Van Nguyen, Owner of Ignite Hair & Beauty Lounge
F
or Spring 2014, take a laid back approach to “effortless romance” hairstyles. Our top four hot spring hair trends:
1. Extreme side part Changing the part of your side has been proven to instantly change the look with minimal effort. Take the part deeper for a 1930’s inspired look that will show off confidence and can look über sexy. Product tip: Add a hydrating product to wet hair and mix with a medium hold gel. The two combined will hold without the hardness. 2. The “Bed head” look is messier than beach waves. Try skipping shampooing every other day to give your hair some slept-in texture. Keep waves random and tousled. Product tip: Add Kerastase Elixir Ultime Moringa Immortel to your waves for an instant healthy, soft shine. 3. High shine This is an almost wet, but glossy look, and definitely not greasy. Gel up the sides of your hair or slick back the roots leading into sleek flat-ironed ends or with loose wavy ends to reveal a contrasting matte texture. 4. Messy Plaits Braids are still so pretty! There’s no need to be neat… the messier the better!

HOT HAIR COLOURS FOR S PRING If you are a blonde, go for cooler icy tones for spring. Adding some pastel pink and lavender to your highlights is quite trendy as well. Deep, rich red tones are very popular. Ombre/baliage colors are still trending, but in a minimalistic way with very gradual and blended highlights starting much higher – a few inches below the roots. Fashion forward short cuts are all over the fashion runway. This season’s bobs come in all shapes and sizes, from slick and smooth, to choppy and textured. Our Ignite Beauty team recommends regular trims to keep your blunt cut bob looking sharp and stunning. Spring up-dos are completely relaxed with strands left loose for a soft, feminine feel and volume at the roots to frame the face. Fashion stylist Lisa Millar-Jones has a suggestion for those who are incredibly un-experimental with their hair: fun hair accessories are having their moment this spring. From gold hair cuffs and leather bows to floral blossoms and jeweled headbands, the right choice can elevate any simple hairstyle and make it all the more impressive and beautiful. Lastly, but most importantly, pair up your new spring do with glowing, luminous skin. Glowing skin is a must heading into the sunny season. Invest in a good skincare line, some illuminators and an orange coral lipstick; then lightly dust some shimmered bronzers to achieve a luminous spring look.

ASK THE EXPERT
DR JASON RIVERS
Q: What is the difference between adult acne and rosacea? How can your Riversol products help my condition?
A: Although acne is thought to be a disease of teenagers, it can linger on or even start well after the high school years. In fact, adult acne can affect over 25% of people in their adult years. Adult acne has a similar appearance to acne of the teen years, though the distribution of lesions may differ slightly in adult women. Typically, acne has open and closed comedones (“blackheads” and “whiteheads”) as the hallmark lesions. In addition, papules (red bumps), pustules (puss filled pimples) and nodules (deep seated and sore lesions) may develop. Acne lesions appear on the face, upper chest and back most often. In women, acne may flare around or during the menstrual cycle with a predilection for lesions to develop along the jawline and neck. By contrast, rosacea is disease that affects 5% of the Canadian population and usually has its onset between the ages of 25 and 45 years. Women seem to be more likely to develop rosacea than men for unknown reasons. Often people with fair skin and a “Celtic” background are more likely to develop rosacea and certain trigger factors may set it off - stress, sunlight exposure, tea/coffee, red wine consumption and spicy foods, for example. Initially, people with rosacea may experience flushing of the central face as a response to one or more of these trigger factors. With time, widened red blood vessels may appear (capillaries) on the nose and cheeks preferentially. Why people often confuse rosacea with acne is because rosacea patients may also develop papules and pustules. However, rosacea is not associated with comedones like acne. Further, in advanced rosacea cases the nose may enlarge (rhinophyma) because of an increase in oil gland size, and the eyes may become irritated too. Riversol products can help the skin of both rosacea and acne sufferers. First, Riversol can help to improve the appearance of the skin by gently moisturizing the skin to help restore the damaged barrier function. Second, the main active ingredient of Riversol – beta thujaplicin derived from the Pacific Red Cedar tree – has anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit both acne and rosacea sufferers.

AMANDA BEISEL
Q: I am in my mid 30’s and want to start taking care of my skin, but there are so many skin treatments and products available and I have no idea where to start. I am looking for affordable options, but do want to see results. What do you recommend for someone in there 30’s who is starting to see the signs of aging creep up?
A: Booking a skincare consultation with a trusted skin practitioner is the best first step. Skin consults are your opportunity to ask your questions and be educated by the skincare practitioner on what options are available for you, your skin needs, and goals and this consultation should be complimentary. This is your opportunity to interview the skincare practitioner and decide if this is the person you want to trust in your skincare journey. You want to find that connection. The consultation process should focus on your skin goals and needs. First and foremost, you want to be starting an effective daily skincare program that includes essential skincare ingredients. This is the most important first step because what you apply to your skin each day is essential to having healthy skin and seeing results. Secondary is identifying which skincare treatments will address your skin needs. There is no one-size-fits-all model. Some clients will only need to start an effective skincare program at home while others will need to undergo treatments to address their skin goals and needs. Dedicate a year to your skin health and you will see it flourish. Amanda Beisel is the owner of the award-winning SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic in Yaletown. APRIL IS ROSACEA AWARENESS MONTH
By Dermatologist Dr. Jason K. Rivers, MD, FRCPC, FAAD With contributions from Sandi Lesueur, CEO, Riversol Skin Care Solutions Inc.
After three months of using the Riversol For Redness trio, skin was visibly improved. Before
A
s a rosacea and adult acne specialist, I was approached by Fresh Magazine to explain what rosacea is and how to
treat it. Rosacea is a common skin condition, affecting 45 million people worldwide, including two million Canadians. This chronic disease affects men and women, beginning around age 25. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Rosacea is often mistaken for sensitive skin, adult acne or allergies. It begins with cheek flushing and can extend to other areas. Fixed dilated capillary blood vessels appear over time, usually affecting the cheeks, nose, chin, and, in rare circumstances, the chest, neck and ears. Red papules and pustules may develop. In severe cases, there may be bulbous enlargement of the nose. WHO DOES ROSACEA AFFECT? The causes of rosacea are unclear. Heredity plays a major role. Environmental factors can trigger rosacea. It’s women who most often seek diagnosis and treatment, even though men’s rosacea can be more severe.
After
SKINCARE AND COSMETICS As rosacea compromises the skin barrier function, treatment begins with good skincare. In a National Rosacea Society survey, 41% of 1,066 patients reported that certain skin care products aggravated their condition; 27% said certain cosmetics caused flare-ups. The Society suggests: • avoiding common rosacea irritants like hot food and wine • choosing fragrance-free skin care and makeup products, testing before buying • using minimal products • limiting sunlight exposure • reducing stress • avoiding aggressive microdermabrasion and chemical peels ROSACEA TREATMENT PROTO COL—WHAT MAKES RIVERSOL UNIQUE? I couldn’t endorse any of the rosacea-treatment products on the market. Too many luxury lines contain fragrances, dyes, sulfates or formaldehyde. Even organic and natural products can cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivities. Instead, I created my own.
The breakthrough came with beta-thujaplicin (thoo-ya-pli-cin), derived from the Pacific red cedar tree and boasting anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antifungal and anti-oxidant properties. First Nations people have long used red cedar for its medicinal benefits. However, thujaplicin can be costly to obtain and difficult to work with, so it is rarely used in skincare lines. It took eight years of testing and research before I distributed my first samples to colleagues. After reviewing the clinical feedback, I set out with the Riversol chemist to incorporate thujaplicin, a powerful healing natural ingredient, into a skincare system for sensitive-skin sufferers. RIVERSOL CUSTOMERS Sandi Lesueur, CEO of Riversol Skin Care Solutions, explains. “When I first met Dr Rivers, his patients at Pacific Dermaesthetics complained about sensitive skin while using too many harsh products, too often. Riversol’s simple three-step system – cleanser, serum and moisturizer – simplifies skincare, significantly improves skin appearance, and reduces redness and pigmentation. Hundreds of testimonials from incredibly loyal customers share personal experiences about Riversol products changing their lives. This consistent feedback gives me the drive and excitement to bring these products into international markets. After 9+ years of hard work, we are now being approached by top international cosmetic retailers and medical distributors.” Dr. Jason Rivers is a Clinical Professor of dermatology and past director of the dermatology residency program at the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science, University of British Columbia. ALYSSA BAUMAN
Q: I am always hungry by 11 am and find myself fantasizing so much for more coffee and a muffin that I end up giving in. I need another boost by 4 pm too. I don’t understand as I grab a quick breakfast, yet I am always tired and hungry.
A: There are a number of factors that could be making you feel this way. Examine what you are eating for breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal as it kick starts your metabolism. Drinking a green juice is my answer to everything, so make this part of your morning routine. It is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that power up your cells. Eating a balanced breakfast - one with a mix of protein and complex carbohydrates like avocado on sprouted toast, an egg, steel cut oats with berries and coconut (more recipes at nourished.ca) fuels your body for the day. Breakfast eaters have more energy, actually eat healthier and way less, and have more focus and concentration throughout the day. Another factor to look at is how many coffees you drink and how you take your coffee. I don’t believe in deprivation as it doesn’t work, but if you are drinking more than 1 cup of coffee and you take it loaded with sugar and cream or drink other hot sugary caffeinated beverages, this is definitely a factor to cause exhaustion and hunger. Sugar makes you hungry for more sugar, so it is a constant rollercoaster. The more sugar you eat, the more you want to eat. So wean yourself off slowly first by using alternatives like maple syrup or coconut palm sugar in coffee. Then, start eliminating the sugar altogether. Switching to a 4pm green juice will keep you energized and satiated and will make your body altogether more efficient, not to mention other great benefits like glowing skin and weight management. DR SPENCE PENTLAND
Q: Why are my eyebrows thinning? A: It is so nice to have discovered that the cause of all your woes was
something called hypothyroidism, a very treatable condition that millions of other North Americans live with. After a couple months of treatment you are feeling much better, have energy, and have lost 13 pounds! Rewind. You are having trouble with your weight, low energy, cold, hair thinning (scalp and eyebrows), depressed, so you go to your doctor and are sent for routine blood work. The basic test for your thyroid, TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) comes back out of range, you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism and prescribed synthetic thyroid hormone. A few months pass and upon reflection you find yourself living day to day quite melancholy, all the weight you lost is back and then some, you feel cold, and you look in the mirror and your eyebrows seem to be disappearing, again. Your doctor increases your dosage of thyroid medication and almost immediately your are feeling more energy, but also have heart palpitations, night sweats, and anxiety. Stresses in life haven’t changed, so what is happening? Your doctor says not to worry and in a short time these symptoms fade and you start to feel quite well again. Years pass and the above scenario repeats itself again and again. You find yourself on an ever-increasing dose of thyroid medications. The only problem is, you no longer feel well, and the weight gain has become unmanageable despite medications, dietary changes, and vigorous exercise. To top it off, you have been considering starting your family soon and you learn that it is essential for a healthy conception and prevention of miscarriage to have your thyroid in balance. It is time to talk to your doctor about getting checked for a thyroid autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s. Some authorities estimate that 90% of hypothyroid cases in North America may be due to Hashimoto’s. In these cases, the patient should be treating their immune system, not simply feeding the body synthetic thyroid hormone, which, over time, can actually contribute to the destruction of the thyroid tissue. General recommendations for the management of Hashimoto’s: • Begin with both liver and digestive health for proper function of the thyroid and its effect on our body. • Eliminate Gluten and Casein (a protein in dairy) as they can flare the immune system in those sensitive. • Take a quality probiotic, vitamin D, and fish oils. • Diligently integrate effective stress management strategies into your life. By taking these steps you will find better overall health and wellbeing, and thicker eyebrows!

THE LATEST INNOVATION IN COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY:
DERMAPEN SKIN NEEDLING REJUVENATION By Amanda Beisel
D
ermapen is the latest innovation in skin needling and collagen induction therapy and is quickly becoming the optimal choice in skin rejuvenation due to its low risk profile and minimal downtime. The Dermapen has become the new industry standard for skin needling, providing excellent results. This revolutionary device is simple, yet powerful with many distinct advantages over dermal rollers, taking skin needling treatment to new heights. The Dermapen is very safe and sterile when performed by a trained practitioner and has minimal downtime. Disposable needles are used to eliminate the risk of cross contamination, whilst the adjustable needle depths allow for a treatment tailored to your individual needs. The Dermapen also has the advantage of being able to effectively treat hard to reach places (e.g. around the eyes, nose and lips). Due to this vertical feature, the Dermapen is great for treating atrophic and surgical scars because of its ability to effectively penetrate and break down scar tissue. The Dermapen treatments use a precise needling technique that results in increased collagen and elastin in the treated area. You can expect smoother skin that looks refreshed, restored and youthful. The treatment is performed using a rich dose of hyaluronic acid in combination with human derived growth factors that deeply penetrate into the skin’s dermal layer, further supporting collagen and elastin production. Dermapen promotes scar-less healing and natural collagen reproduction, similar to fractional laser treatments and laser resurfacing, but without the side effects and downtime. The mechanism of injury is a natural process, which makes Dermapen a holistic approach to skin rejuvenation therapy. Dermapen is one of the most advanced skin rejuvenation therapies available today for the treatment of: • Fine lines & wrinkles • Crow’s feet • UV damaged skin • Overall skin rejuvenation • Large pores • Scars (acne, surgical and burns) • Stretch marks • Smoker’s lines around the lips TRE ATMENT FREQUENCY Most people will need a series of 3-6 treatments depending on what is being treated and the desired outcome. The treatments are spaced at 4-6 week intervals depending on the intensity of the treatment performed. Your skin practitioner will help you determine a suitable treatment program. The SKN Spin is highly recommended for use on a weekly basis to maintain the results achieved. ACNE AND SURGICA L SCA RS The Dermapen treatment improves the appearance of acne and surgical scars. The micro needles of the Dermapen cause new collagen and elastin to be generated and deposited in the areas of the scar. The physical nature of skin needling breaks up this fibrous and uneven scar tissue and stimulates the growth of new tissue. Plus, there is the added benefit of new capillary growth, which improves the blood supply to the area providing a healthy foundation for the new skin. Currently there are ablative and non-ablative treatments offered which can damage the epidermis and evaporate the skin, leading to a thinner epidermis. The

Dermapen keeps the integrity of the epidermis intact, which quickens healing time and causes less pain. FINE LINES AND WRINKLES As we age, the natural production of collagen and elastin diminishes, which leads to wrinkles, and sagging. Wrinkling in the skin is also caused by habitual facial expressions, aging, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration, and various other factors. The Dermapen promotes a process of new skin growth through the science of collagen induction therapy. The most effective way to stimulate or “induce” new skin safely and effectively is by micro-needling with the Dermapen. SKIN REJUVENATION Dermapen treatments not only target specific imperfections but also provide an overall rejuvenation of the skin. The needling process improves micro-circulation in conjunction with collagen and elastin formation beneath the skin to thicken the dermis, reducing wrinkles. You will notice improved skin texture and more even skin tone as well as an overall brightness to your skin. Undergoing a series of Dermapen treatments will not only provide visible results to the entire appearance of your skin, but it will slow down the signs of aging. MINIMIZE PORE SIZE The Dermapen treatments will result in a more refined appearance of the pores. There are two main culprits that contribute to the appearance of enlarged pores. The first is congested skin. When your pores are congested, this will increase their appearance. Secondly, pores will appear larger as our skin begins to age and the elasticity of our skin decreases. The Dermapen treatments stimulate collagen and elastin, which results in firming of the skin, thereby reducing the appearance of large pores. STRETCH MA RKS Stretch marks are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-color hue. They are caused by tearing of the dermis, and over time can diminish, but will not disappear completely. The Dermapen treatment offers a progressive and natural solution to stretch marks. The treatment stimulates healthy collagen and elastin production in the deeper skin layer to repair the damaged areas with the release of growth factors and stimulation of fibroblasts. Everyone will experience improvement in the appearance of their stretch marks with the Dermapen, but results are individual and depend on the severity, age and extent of the stretch marks. Early red stretch marks will show the most improvement. TA KE YOUR SKIN REJUVENATION PROGRAM TO THE NEXT LEVEL Accelerate the results of your existing skincare program with the addition of Dermapen treatments. Aside from the many corrective benefits of undergoing a series of Dermapen treatments, they are an optimal choice in preventative skincare. Dermapen treatments will maintain healthy skin and cultivate long-term skin regeneration, delaying the aging process. Invest in your skin health today and it will be youthful, radiant, and long-lived. Amanda Beisel is the owner of the award-winning SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic in Yaletown. A
s a registered dietician, author, and recognized authority on the role of natural food and wholesome ingredients, Karlene Karst devotes her time and efforts to helping people get back to the basics to live a long, healthy life. Here, she shares her experience and insights with Fresh readers. The origins of her interest in nutrition and wellness… “Many people who come to use natural health products and eat an organic, whole food diet come from a place of need. I was the same. I grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan with a wonderful and loving family. Life was simple; however, by the time I was 12, I had lost three of my grandparents from cancer. That same year, my father was diagnosed with stage-3 bladder cancer. He was 35 years old. I was made aware from a very young age how fragile life is. I saw that without our health, we really don’t have anything. “My dad’s 5-year cancer battle was long, tough and brave and it brought us much closer together as a family. On March 12, 1995, my father lost his battle, and this day forever changed our family. We rallied together to try to figure out how life could go on without this central person. Thankfully my parents raised us in a very faith-driven home, attending church every Sunday, and focusing on our Christian faith to help us through this most challenging time in our life. “I had always dreamed of being a teacher, so I started university in the education program. After the realization that I wanted to study something in the health field, my studies took me to Saskatoon to pursue a degree in nutrition. At the time, I was a little nervous about it as the college was small, and I didn’t know anyone who had studied to become a nutritionist. Would I get a job? “Along the way, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called mixed connective tissue disease, which causes severe muscle pain, weakness, headaches, and fatigue. After numerous doctor visits (I was only 20 at the time), the rheumatologists felt they had it figured out. I left with a prescription in hand and was told there wasn’t much else I could do other than a combination of steroids, and NSAIDs to control the pain. I was using 8-10 advil per day in combination with the prescription. I was also studying to become a dietitian back in the days of the “low fat” diet craze. My diet consisted of tons of carbohydrates and very little protein and fat, and of course as a typical student a lot of packed and convenience food. At this point I was on a slippery slope and was probably the sickest that I have ever been in my life. “I truly believe that people, experiences, friends, teachers, and jobs come and go throughout our life for various reasons. After graduation, I started my first job in the natural health industry working for a local company manufacturing plant oils such as flaxseed oil. At the time, I didn’t consider it to be my dream job, but as it turned out, that company put me on the path to healing and the life I have today.” On the evolution of her approach over time… “The only supplements I had ever taken in my life at this point were a Flinstone multi and a chewable vitamin C (both of which are all sugar). Working for a company manufacturing supplements considered to be “good fat” was an eye opener. I started to use a combination of borage

oil, fish oil omega-3s, and flax oil, and within about 6 months, I had my “aha” moment. I wasn’t reaching for that giant bottle of advil. I wasn’t getting headaches as often, nor did I feel in as much pain. This was the beginning of my love for natural health and the importance of omega healthy fats. “I co-authored my first book in 2004 called Healthy Fats for Life, which became a national best-seller and set me on course for the next 10 years of sharing the science of good fats. I knew one day I would have my own brand of omega-3s and I feel so blessed that this has become a reality. Sea-licious is the result of my health journey, story and passion for health. “My health journey has progressed considerably since that time. Each day/year I strive to continue to make improvements in my body and my health. I would never have thought I would be blending spinach

and kale for breakfast, but I do now. Our body has an innate ability to health itself when given the proper nutrients and environment. “Each day I try to learn something new. I know when I am pushing myself too hard–my body tells me. Then, I need to take a step back and re-evaluate. Stress and lack of sleep are big triggers for me and I continue to work on ways to help minimize the impact of my very busy life.” On trends in nutrition and health… “Over the past 15 years in this industry, I have seen a lot of trends come and go. The biggest mistake people make is thinking that a supplement is like a magic pill, that they will start to use it and without making any other changes in their life, will be “fixed”. It doesn’t work that way. To find your optimal health takes trial and error, discipline, consistency, and a deep inner belief that you can feel your best.” Current fads that you would advise against… “I am not a fan of diets that are too restrictive. I think we should keep our eating simple. Whole, real foods - avoiding packaged and processed - drinking lots of clean water, taking supplements and fitting in time for activity. Health is also a big part inner faith and spirit and each person should strive to find their whole health.” 3 or 4 basic principles that everyone could apply… “Each body is unique and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another. I believe in a foundational nutrient program to help build the body right from the basic cell level. My nutrition mantra is to eat 5-6 small meals per day and each meal and every time we eat to have protein, fiber and healthy fat. The basic supplements should include omega3s, probiotics and vitamin D. These are the core nutrients that are body needs to build basic health.” Her own health and fitness regimen and living in the public eye… “I have an opportunity to be considered a positive influence on and hopefully inspire others to live a better life. I have been very honest about the difficulty in raising a young family while running a business (a start up one at that), and that at the end of the day there isn’t much left in the tank. I would love to say I have daily workouts, but that just isn’t the case right now. But I do workout twice per week with a great friend of mine who is a trainer. We do full-body workouts that incorporate a lot of isometric, plyometrics and exercises targeting all muscle groups. I need the biggest return for the smallest investment (work smarter not harder philosophy). At a minimum, even in the pouring rain, I try to get out for a walk/hike in our beautiful community. Even a 30-minute pause in my day can be enough to reset my game and give my body a boost. Remember, if we don’t take time to care for ourselves we won’t be able to care for anyone else.” On enjoy ing life’s “guilty pleasures”… “I honestly love to eat (80% of the time really good food) and was lucky to marry into an Italian family (who equally love food). For me, there is nothing better than Sunday dinner with my in-laws and my motherin-law’s spaghetti with homemade tomato sauce, and a big glass of red wine! Her sauce is crazy delicious, and 9 years later I still can’t make sauce the way she does! I also love dark chocolate. We need to find our happiness and hopefully healthy food can be a big part of that.”

Finding a balance in life without feeling deprived… “I call it the 80/20 rule (other than if you are in need of losing weight for a health issue or have a certain condition). Follow the basic principles that can help lead to good health and you should be able to enjoy an ice cream with the kids, or a glass of wine with friends on a Friday night. The trick is not to become obsessive or over indulgent with any one thing (there is also not eating enough and working out too much that can be just as much of a problem). Remember what you put into your mouth every day does influence how you feel.” How can the average person cope with the flood of information in the media? “This is actually very difficult in the age of the internet and search engines. It is hard to know what is true and there are probably more misconceptions in the nutrition field than any other. Sometimes studies get misinterpreted and it leaves consumers unsure of their decisions. Remember when coconut oil was the worst thing for you and if you incorporated it into your diet you were for sure going to get heart disease. For almost the last 10 years now coconut has become one of the most popular oils and for good reason. I love everything coconut. “I recommend finding a trusted source. Health professionals that are credentialed and have licences are under strict codes of conduct to provide the best possible information to the consumer. Even then it can be difficult—so my best advice is to trust your gut instinct. If you have read something or heard something that doesn’t make sense to you, then don’t follow it. Trust yourself, and empower yourself by becoming educated so you know how to weave through the good and bad advice. Knowledge is power.” Fresh readers are concerned about anti-aging and staying healthy as they are getting older. Any advice for them? “We all go through these same struggles. People who have abused their bodies in many ways from bad food and too much of everything in their younger years do not age as well as those who have respected their bodies. Building your body from the inside out can be the best step towards achieving external beauty. “Nutrition is a powerful tool in the “healthy aging” conversation. Omega-3s are foundational to improving cell membrane and fluidity, moisture retention and wrinkle prevention. Honestly, most people look 10 years younger than their age. But it isn’t even the external look, it is the energy and positive attitude they carry with them that makes them look younger. Smiling, being positive and friendly, and inner beauty make a person look and feel younger.” Nutritional supplements… “For the most part I love supplements, although it can be very tricky to navigate through the plethora of options available. Remember to keep it simple. Incorporate the basic nutrients like omega-3s, probiotics and vitamin D. If you have specific health issues that may require higher dosage, that will require some investigation that you need to either consult with a practitioner or become knowledgeable yourself. And remember not all supplements are created equal, and not always is something more expensive the better option. Natural health food stores are great options for helping customers choose the right product. At the end of the day, become knowledgeable so you can make the right decisions.”

STARTING WITH WHY:
A BEST FRIEND’S SMILE STORY O
ne of the greatest privileges of my job (which never really feels like a job!) is that my patients generously invite me into their lives, so that I can explore the roots of their personalities and preferences, discover their true, authentic smile, and apply my artisan skills to bring it to life through the transformative possibilities of modern dentistry. Indeed, it’s this elevated level of friendship that makes every day at Smile City Square Dental an inspiration, and an experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world. Of course, while I’m honoured and grateful to consider all of my patients as friends, just like anyone else, there are people in my life who share the joy, provide the support, and admittedly, at times shoulder the responsibility of being one of my “best friends.” And when I have the opportunity to help them find and express the smile they were born to share, it’s more than just a special event: it’s worthy of a Fresh Vancouver Smile Story! And so, without further delay, please allow me to introduce you to David, one my best friends – and one of my best patients, too. I certainly don’t want to embarrass him (although isn’t that what best friends are entitled to do from time to time?), but I must say that David is one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever known. He’s both highly creative and very grounded, and it’s no surprise to anyone who knows him that he’s enjoying an enhanced level of personal and professional success. He’s worked hard, sacrificed a great deal, handled life’s inevitable challenges with dignity and courage, and is one of those people who always give more than they take. In short: he’s an amazing best friend! However, one thing that wasn’t so amazing about my amazing best friend was his smile. That’s not to say that it was severely or even seriously flawed, because it wasn’t. It was an “okay smile.” Yet in my view, David deserved something much more! He deserved a brilliant smile that aligned perfectly with the upward progression of his life; one that was clearly headed in the right direction. In other words, I didn’t feel that David needed to “fix” his smile; and for that matter, neither did he. Yet after some convincing on my part (OK, you’re right: nagging), he agreed that investing in a better smile was a natural fit for who he was – and especially, where he was going. It was a life choice that simply made sense. David made that life choice over a decade ago, and since then I’ve performed a few different treatments at various times, such as replacing his old silver mercury fillings with modern ceramic restorations. These not only look and feel natural, they are extremely durable as well. Notably, neither David nor I ever referred to his treatments as “cosmetic” – because we didn’t see them that way. We saw them as a matter of “repairing and improving.” This is important to highlight, because there are some people out there who – quite understandably – balk at or
23
|
shy away from the term “cosmetic.” It can imply something uncomfortably invasive, or excessively dramatic. Yet David’s smile story is living proof that augmenting a smile so that it aligns with who someone is – and who they are becoming – is not invasive or dramatic. It’s a natural, sensible step. It’s not a deviation from the journey of life; it’s an integral part of that journey itself. What’s more, David’s smile story is a perfect illustration of how my approach to dentistry has always been to start with why – because that is profoundly more important than the how and the what. Indeed, my patient’s beliefs, hopes, dreams and aspirations are rooted and embedded in their unique “why.” When I tap into that – not just as a trusted advisor, but also as a caring friend – I uncover a world of possibilities that, eventually, provide the foundation for my patient’s authentic smile; and, in some special cases, the building blocks of an inspiring Smile Story! “I’ve known Dr. Mah for years – and yes, I get to call him Kelvin. I’m honoured to consider him one of my best friends. He’s outstanding at what he does, and I trust him implicitly. I’m also a big fan of his practice, which is refined and relaxing. I’ve never felt that my smile was `broken’ – just that it could benefit from being `repaired and improved.’ He understood that as well as I did, and helped me truly take my smile to the next level. My only regret, if I can call it that, is that I didn’t do this sooner. Of course, my wife would disagree, since my `Smile City Square Dental’ smile is one of the first things she noticed about me, and while I won’t say it’s the only reason she agreed to marry me – let’s just say it didn’t hurt!” Dr Kelvin P. Mah is driven to “enrich lives, one smile at a time.” He believes in helping people – not merely treating problems – and takes a dedicated, personal interest in the health, wellness and happiness of each individual patient. His award-winning Smile City Square Dental practice reflects an organic and zen-like atmosphere of warmth and relaxation. He is also a graduate of UBC’s prestigious Dental School and is an instructor with the Frontier Institute, which offers postgraduate programs in advanced cosmetic dentistry. The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge W
e were looking for a reviving spring break when we heard about The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge. Like a breath of fresh mountain air, The Spa is a cleansing space for mind, body and soul and the spa’s 2013 refresh saw the decor becoming even more in-tune with the lodge’s stunning surroundings. Just a five-minute drive from the heart of Whistler, Nita Lake Lodge is located 500m from the base of Whistler Mountain, on the edge of the Valley Trail that connects Whistler’s communities. Our spring wellness break started the moment we arrived and sank onto our king-sized bed. We roused ourselves to enjoy the crisp spring air as we admired Nita Lake from the balcony of our spacious 500 square foot studio suite. Each of the lodge’s 77 rooms, including the one- and two-bedroom suites, features double soaker tubs and king sized beds. At dinnertime, we curled up in front of the crackling fire at Cure and joined in the après-ski chat with late season skiers over some bar bites and a glass of BC wine. The following day, we began with a delicious warm gluten-free pastry made in-house at the lodge’s Fix Café and sipped on freshly-squeezed juices and smoothies from their new range of health-conscious drinks.
They helped get us going as we had an active morning hiking and biking the Valley Trail – we were glad to return to the refuge of the lodge in the afternoon and take a long soak in the outdoor hot tubs to relax our aching muscles. The redesign of The Spa was inspired by the four elements – earth, water, fire and air – and the lounge area is now a warm and homely haven of natural fabrics, cozy blankets and plush rugs. We snuggled up with a book and enjoyed the view of the mountains beyond, which were starting to sprout alpine wild flowers. The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge offers eco-friendly products from ilā and Tammy Fender, the only spa in British Columbia to do so, and their signature ilā Kundalini Back Massage takes relaxation to another level. With a combination of warm essential oils and gentle massage, the treatment uses chakra and sound healing to activate and channel Kundalini, the dormant energy at the base of the spine and it left us truly blissed-out and fully rejuvenated. We floated out of the spa on a cloud of happy exhaustion and headed to a restorative yin class at the onsite Jivamukti yoga studio. A quick snooze and a brisk lakeside walk under the stars later, we’d wo-

ken up enough to enjoy our meal at Aura, feasting on a seasonal spring menu that makes the most of the produce growing on the lodge’s rooftop garden. We ended our weekend away curled up in our robes in front of our fireplace, watching a DVD and feeling totally relaxed in our new home away from home. We left feeling as refreshed as a springtime rain shower. Facts:
