SLEEP YOUR WAY

TO BETTER HEALTH By Tracy Kaye Holly CSNA Master

T

he body can endure sleep debt for only so long after which, if the debt remains unpaid, we suffer and experience the effects of mental and physical bankruptcy. Let’s put it this way…if you haven’t had your ‘beauty’ sleep, it ain’t pretty! The mirror can reflect your whole world as ugly, including your health. These days the vast majority tend to push the envelope when it comes to sleep. We stay up late working, watching TV, partying or playing video games. The problem with such common nocturnal habits is that they rob the body of the time it needs to cleanse, detoxify, repair and rejuvenate. The end result is chronic sleep debt. If you haven’t had enough sleep, it can feel like you’re walking around in a fog. You can become impatient and crabby. It can take a toll on an individual’s ability to make good decisions. This not only affects you; it also affects those around you. Your most valued relationships can suffer. This is not healthy!

When you haven’t had sufficient sleep, your diet also suffers. You’ll notice that you crave refined carbohydrates, high sugar snacks and foods that are not hydrating. All this contributes to inflammation and dehydration and the origin of ‘dis-ease’ in the body. Insomnia also has a corrosive effect on the thyroid gland. Testosterone levels decrease and growth hormone release is blunted. Sleep deprivation increases free radical activity, risk of infection and illness, and is associated with premature biological aging, fatigue and muddled thinking. Evidence suggests that employees are less prone to injury, error, infection and burn-out when given the opportunity to rest horizontally for 20-30 minutes each day. Physician Alon Avidan, Director of the UCLA Sleep Center, says it’s not uncommon for shift workers to develop psychiatric conditions

due to accumulated sleep debt. “Things get to a point where it begins to impact their social function and relationships. They can feel depressed and anxious.” Scientists believe sleep disturbance is a common response to changes in our lives, such as trouble at the office or home or self-induced anxiety as a response to stress, poor diet, lack of exercise and physical activity.

“MAN IS ILL BECAUSE HE IS NEVER STILL.” ~Paracelsus

Some people hate going to bed. They feel that sleep is a waste of time and a function of mortal weakness. Perhaps… but like it or not, sleep is not an option. Sleep is nature’s toll charge for achieving balance and restoration and prepares us for the new day ahead. Sleep provides nourishment to the nervous system, relaxation to our muscles and rest for the mind. The body requires adequate rest and sleep to maintain

optimum health and vitality. Get to bed and embrace sleep; it will be your best friend. What is the optimum amount of sleep? There are no hard and fast rules about how much sleep is enough. It actually varies considerably from one person to the next and depends on age, gender, stress levels and physical workload. Our evolutionary pattern suggests 8-9 1/2 hours of sleep as an ideal figure. Coupled with a 20 minute power nap or meditation period in the mid-afternoon, AKA as “siesta” time; but to operate at peak efficiency during the day with a sense of vitality, most adults need about 7.5 hours each night.

“GROWTH HORMONE IS CONSIDERED BY SOME TO BE THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH”

Did you know that deep REM sleep provides a stimulus for growth hormone (GH) release? GH is secreted from the pituitary gland and promotes overall strength and vitality. The pituitary gland is no larger than a pea and is located at the base of the brain. GH stimulates growth in virtually all body tissues, including bone, muscle and organs. Unlike many other hormones, GH has no single target gland, having a somewhat universal effect throughout the body. GH is especially active during childhood and puberty, but is followed by a sharp reduction in most adults. Observation of this decline is based on representative samples of Western population, most of whom are overweight, de-conditioned and sedentary. Do you see the connection? Sleep is essential to the management of body composition and weight. During sleep we release GH in pulse-like rhythmic cycles, which acts to reorganize and restore the basic structure of our entire being. Adequate sleep improves cortisol chemistry and balance. Cortisol is released from the adrenal glands under stress, and excess cortisol released during prolonged mental or emotional stress simply ruins the body and weakens the immune system. During sleep our adrenals are at rest.

STEPS TO HELP ACHIEVE A RESTFUL SLEEP:

1. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, sugar and rich foods before bedtime. 2. A wholesome diet and regular brisk exercise promote healthy fatigue, meaning you have a natural inclination to go to bed and fall asleep. 3. Try a warm to hot bath with relaxing essential oils before bedtime. 4. Don’t exercise directly before retiring (that is stimulating). 5. Make your bedroom quiet, dark, cozy, comfortable and a restful place to sleep with the bedroom window open if possible.

6. Relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation provide peace of mind. 7. There are many well-known and proven natural sleep remedies that can enhance the quality of sleep, for example: homeopathic Calms Forte’, melatonin, calcium, magnesium, tryptophan (amino acid), 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) or herbs such as chamomile tea, kava kava, valerian root, St. John’s wort and passionflower. 8. Eating some protein before you go to bed is helpful to offset some of the diminished hormone responses. When protein levels are kept steady throughout the night, an increased amount of hGH is released, cortisol levels decrease, and nitrogen availability favors maintenance of the anabolic flux (negative entropy) created by resistance exercise.

9. Go to bed at the same time each night, as our bodies love routine. By using the synergy of these helpful tips, going to bed can be a positive ritual. “The advice I would give to my younger self is very, very simple: Stop burning the candle at both ends and renew your estranged relationship with sleep — you will be more productive, more effective, more creative, and more likely to enjoy your life.” - Arianna Huffington Tracy Kaye Holly CSNA Master is the Executive Director and Public Relations Officer for the Cory Holly Institute. Tracy is a whole food cook and writes recipes for several national health & fitness magazines and is the author of The Athlete’s Cookbook, Simple Strategies for Living Lean and Staying Well and Sports Nutrition for Kids.

TAKING ON CANCER THE GORDON & LESLIE DIAMOND HEALTH CARE CENTRE By Dan Tidsbury

human story that includes not just the patient, but the network of others who know them and share their journey: family, friends, co-workers, and the care team. Let’s consider one such story. Joan was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in September 2013. By May 2014 (after multiple surgeries and chemo) she was referred to Dr. Charles Scudamore at VGH. We asked her to provide a few words: “What I want to say about Dr. Scudamore… After I shook hands with him, he asked me why I was on disability. I told him ‘Cancer’. I had

hen considering the fight against disease, there are three inseparable parts to the story. You cannot see modern facilities such as the Gordon & Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital without being impressed by the planning, hard work, and resources, financial and otherwise, that have gone into the design, construction, equipment, services, and amenities in order to create a working facility such as this. The second part, of course, is the team of gifted men and women who bring the facility to life – who do the research, provide the treatment, and deliver the care to the patients who depend on it. Without this group of dedicated professionals, a health care centre is just a building, no matter how new and shiny it may be. The final part of the story is the patients themselves. It is easy to forget that every diagnosis – cancer, heart disease, kidney disease – is a

not been able to work for months and never thought I would see a day where I could go back to providing for my five children. “He replied that that is why he was here. “It’s curable,” he said. He had lots of smiles, and to me, this operation gave me a better chance, especially when (after the surgery – a liver resection of two lobes) he said he had gotten all the cancer in the liver. “Prior to that, only chemo was successful in reducing the tumor, but, the odds (before Dr. Scudamore) left me hanging. My oncologist wanted three more months of chemo. And I had to wait for three more months, and then, if no cancer cells were detected anywhere else in the body, he would apply to operate. “That was until we were referred to Dr. Scudamore….I would have had six more months of a growing tumor, had just had a colostomy, rectal removal, hysterectomy… it was so much of an “if ”. I did not believe I had six months. I am truly grateful that I was referred to Dr. Scudamore! I believe that he played big part in saving my life.” More time with family, better quality of life, the extension of life itself – this is the work of the Gordon & Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre. More than buildings, equipment, or procedures, the centre represents an ever-growing collection of real life stories.

SUMMER SKIN SURVIVAL GUIDE:

5 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR SKIN YOUTHFUL ALL SEASON LONG By Amanda Beisel

L

ong days, ice cold drinks, and lots of sun exposure: summer is here in all its glory. It’s the time all Canadians long for - but it can wreak havoc on your skin if you’re not careful. In fact, sun exposure is the number one cause of premature skin aging. Sure, it feels great at the time, but is it worth the extra fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and rough texture? So, what can you do about it? You don’t have to be a hermit to keep your skin safe in the summer, just follow this Skin Survival Guide and you can have your cake and eat it too. #1 - Tos s the Sunscre en - Sunblo ck is your friend Picking sun protection can be an overwhelming task. There are tons of choices, and it’s not easy understanding the differences. Here’s what you need to know: be sure to pick a SunBLOCK, and not a SunSCREEN. These 2 options protect your skin from the sun in very different ways and it’s important to understand the difference so you can make the right choice. Sunscreen: The Unsafe Choice Sunscreens will prevent your skin from burning and protect you from pre-cancerous lesions. What is important for you to know is that many of the ingredients in sunscreens are chemicals that can have detrimental effects on both your skin and your body overall. Sunscreens create free radicals when exposed to UV light (one of the most damaging sunscreen ingredients is avobenzone). These free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that tear down DNA, cell walls and much more. Sunscreens also can cause estrogenic side effects in the body as well as inflammatory changes. The higher the SPF, the more estrogenic and inflammatory based ingredients. Sunblock: The Safe and Effective Choice Currently there are only two sunblocks (also referred to as physical protection). These two sunblocks are titanium dioxide and zine oxide. They are found in some mineral make ups and in sunblock creams. They are naturally occurring minerals that provide good, broad spectrum coverage of both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens (not sunblocks) are designed to absorb the sun’s rays, making them much more likely to break down into damaging byproducts than sunblocks. Zinc and titanium can also become free radicals in the skin but to a much lesser degree.

12

|

We recommend Shade by Osmosis Pur Medical Skincare, or if you’d prefer a makeup with sunblock included, try Oxygenetix Breathable Foundation. #2 - A pply Vitamin C To pically Every Day When you think of vitamin C, images of oranges and vitamin pills probably come to mind. Did you know, however, that when applied topically in the correct form, vitamin C is a powerhouse ingredient that protects the skin from UV damage, lightens pigmentation, prevents formation of pigmentation and boosts collagen production. Including vitamin C (LAscorbic Acid) in your daily skincare routine will give your skin extra defense against the sun while keeping your skin glowing and youthful. L- Ascorbic Acid is the strongest and most effective form of vitamin C. Be sure to find a topical powder form of Vitamin C as this will ensure it is stable and not oxidized. Just mix a small scoop into your daily serum or moisturizer. We recommend Bright Lights Potent ‘C’ Powder by Skin Addix. #3 - Drench Your Skin in Antioxidants A great way to load up on antioxidants topically is by using a nutrient rich serum. Topically applying an antioxidant serum will protect your skin from the damaging UV rays and also repair and restore the skin. When choosing a serum, be sure to look for these high performance ingredients: Ferulic Acid is a potent antioxidant and it is photo-protective. It has also been proven to be anti- carcinogenic. It repairs and protects the skin. When vitamin E and ferulic acid are combined, the combo absorbs UV radiation, making it a powerful skin protecting combo. Phloretin (apple derived - found in apple leaves) is an antioxidant that protects the breakdown of our elasticity. Phloretin inhibits the MMP enzyme. This MMP enzyme breaks down collagen and elastin, which phloretin prevents, keeping the skin youthful. It is also anti-cancer, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Vitamin E can counteract damage to cell membranes and DNA caused by oxidation of sunlight. Vitamin E protects the fibroblasts, the skin cells that make collagen. It has been proven to reduce sun-induced wrinkling and prevent premature aging. Vitamin E is normally found

FRESH VANCOUVER ISSUE 25

NEW in the skin, but exposure to sunlight has been shown to deplete this extremely important antioxidant and topical application of it boosts its availability. Pomegranate seed oil - Topical application of products containing pomegranate may improve the appearance of wrinkled skin by reducing inflammation and forestalling further damage. Research also shows that an extract from pomegranate peel has an inhibitory effect on the collagen-depleting substance MMP-1. We recommend DailyFix Revival Serum by Skin Addix - it contains all these ingredients and so many more. Just add a scoop of Bright Lights Potent “C” Powder and you have created a summer survival cocktail.

The Most Comfortable and Safest

Hair Removal Option

#4 - Fill up on Antioxidant Rich Fo ods and Supplements We all know antioxidants are an important part of a healthy diet, but did you know they can help protect you from damaging UV rays? Antioxidants are being proven to help protect against cellular damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is still the biggest risk factor for skin cancer. So, start filling up on antioxidant rich foods like these: Lycopene, a natural pigment and carotenoid found in tomatoes has been shown to aid in protection against some UV-induced skin irritations. Lycopene helps rid the body of free radicals. Beta-carotene found in red and orange produce has been linked to reduced reactions to sunburns. Flavanoid-filled orange and pink citrus fruits have also been shown to improve the skin’s ability to protect against UV rays. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help protect cells from free radical damage caused by the sun. Look for fatty fish. Fresh herbs such as parsley, basil, sage and rosemary are packed with free-radical fighting antioxidants. Spinach and Swiss chard are both full of antioxidants that naturally protect the skin from sun damage. #5 - Fight the Brown S p ots Hyper-pigmentation and sun spots are made more prominent during the summer months thanks to an increase in UV exposure and heat. If your dark spots are due to sun exposure or Melasma they will get worse in the summer and a good home care program is essential to controlling the pigment and keeping things under control. You can invest all the money in the world in treatments but if you are not protecting and taking care of your skin at home, the spots will just come back. You need to be using a good vitamin C powder mixed into pigmentation serum. A pigmentation serum contains what we call tyrosinase inhibitors. Tyrosinase inhibitors are safe ingredients that suppress your melanin and work to lighten and suppress the pigment from getting worse. Next, you’ll want to ensure you are wearing a physical sunblock every day, rain or shine. I recommend Enlighten by Osmosis Pur Medical as a pigmentation serum to help keep your dark spots under control during the summer months. Conclusion The summer months are all about the outdoors, but that doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the health of your skin. Following this Summer Skin Survival Guide will ensure that you can have a great time while protecting your skin and preventing premature aging. So grab your sunblock, your skincare products and an antioxidant rich glass of red wine and enjoy yourself! s CEO of iFinance Canada (a national company that has been nine times named in the Profit Top 100 Companies in Canada and 7 time W100); Canadian Women Entrepreneur of the Year; 3 time WXN Canada’s top 100 women, Mompreneur of the Year; author of four books; television host; sought-after speaker on the lecture circuit; doctoral researcher (DBA – business); holder of MBA, MSc and a Corporate Governance designation (ICI.d), …not to mention a mother of six children with a seventh (adoptive) on the way, you might figure Ann Kaplan to be somewhat frenzied. The opposite was true, though, as I had the pleasure of a very down-to-earth and humorous conversation with this modest entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Tell us about starting iFinance Canada. Where did you get the drive to start a finance company?

You could say that I owe my career to my first husband. Had I not been left to raise two children on my own and without any type of child support (ever), I would not have had the fear instilled in me to push as hard as I initially did in business. Seriously, it was sink or swim! I was very driven and focused, but I also had to be responsible and put food on the table to provide for a young family.

How did you come up with the concept?

iFinance Canada was initially set up as “Medicard”, a consumer finance company that could provide financing for medical procedures. My family is comprised of doctors: a radiologist, internist, psychologist, dentist, and an ophthalmologist. There was a lot of conversation about our medical system… about private pay versus what was covered by our provincial plans and, more importantly, what may not be covered in the future. I figured I had to fill the gap: either become a gynecologist or cardiac surgeon to balance our family specialties or start a medical finance company to help Canadians. The entrepreneur in me won. I hired a market research company to provide statistics and analyze the Canadian private expenditure market. A surprisingly large number of procedures were not covered by our public health care. Laser eye surgery was just entering the market and cosmetic enhancement was not as much of a whisper, each of which required a wallet extraction. A business was born…perhaps without my realization of how large (and how quickly) it would become. Within a year, we were lending a million dollars a month. It felt like a snowball rolling downhill, gaining momentum with each turn - me running (in heels) in front, dodging and weaving, or should I say “stumbling”, while I pitched banks and lenders to partner with me.

You were a mom, and a single mom at that. How did you do it?

I had to build a business while figuring out how to support my family. Even the $5 school fee for whatever…those ‘whatevers’ happened a lot… was a challenge. I was determined on the business side, but absolutely cognizant of my obligations on the personal front. I did not mix the two…and focused on the moment, the business at hand so to speak. I worked to set up the company during the day while the kids were in nursery school. I rented out a room to a student in exchange for babysitting so I could go to work at a second job after the kids were in bed. (I don’t think I would have the energy to do this today). The whole process was a learning experience and most certainly prepared me for the challenges of the market fluctuations and turbulent times ahead. That fear of not being able to put food on the table or pay the rent is in my core. The business may go through hundreds of mil-

lions of dollars, but I will stop to pick up a penny on the sidewalk or curse at waste if I run a pair of nylons. I believe those invested with me recognize this side and appreciate it.

Are you still working with banks?

Yes, the corporate banks in Canada are very well run: highly regulated and transparent, meaning their expectations are clear and predictable. From a profitability standpoint, if you run a business properly, the cost of borrowing is low. As the economic downturn demonstrated, Canadian banks are built on a solid platform. In fact, I tell my bankers I’m going to dress up as them for Halloween, blue suit, striped ties and all… because to me, they are superheroes.

Tell me about growth.

To date we have had over a billion dollars in loan applications. Our portfolio has expanded to incorporate dental, Dentalcard, veterinary, Petcard and Home Improvement Lending, better known as iFinance Home Improvement. We’ve grown.

Say ing you ’re busy is like say ing the pope is Catholic. How do you find balance with so much going on?

Life throws a lot of curve balls...I don’t get affected too much by the little things. Also, a sense of humor is very important…being able to laugh a lot. Nothing beats a good guffaw…and really, what isn’t funny? A few years ago my mother suffered a devastating and crippling fall (broken neck). We didn’t think twice about moving her in with us (What is one more person when you already have an army?) and converted the dining room to a bedroom for accessibility. She can hear everything in the house from her location. Any time I say anything that sounds even slightly incorrect, she yells (from her bed) or makes noises that indicate disapproval. She is also brutally honest and tough; she enjoys reminding me that what I find humorous is not really funny… in fact, that I am “not at all funny”. She says “the only people that think I’m funny are those that I pay”. So I gave her a dollar.

What do you do to unwind?

I fish! It’s my all-time favorite sport. Trolling, jigging…just fishing. Nothing beats fighting a King Salmon off the coast...but the last three summers we have been boating on the other side of the world, near Carpi. I sit there: feet dangling off the edge of the boat, day in and day out while others swim, rarely catching anything greater than three inches. Nonetheless, I find it relaxing. My husband thinks differently…he finds me to be a total bore and sees no point in fishing for what he calls “bait”. Last year, I bought a large whole fish at the market. I smuggled it on board, hooked it to my line and settled it on the swim grid…all while he was enjoying a warm swim in the ocean. From his vantage I was just calmly jigging of the back of the boat. Suddenly the line went taught…I pretended to fight it, I reeled it in (I could have won an Oscar for the performance)... the captain of the boat even got in on it and clubbed the (dead) fish. Now that my husband has experienced the thrill of my “catch”, he brags to all his friends about it. To this day he does not know the truth behind my “fish tale”.

Everyone loves a practical joke....

I like to keep myself entertained. Last year my husband got it in his head that he looked good in large plaid shirts….he actually went to a sporting-goods store and bought three. Being the strong proud man he is, I realized my fashion advice would not sit well. So I took matters into my

My mother taught me that. When I was fourteen she suggested I move out because my sister was very ill and she was occupied taking care of her, she did not want me to be caught in the care. My happiness was very important to my mother…I realized this. She wanted me to be free. I thanked her by calling her every day to tell her I was happy, which actually made me happy. You are only ever as happy as your saddest child. They’ve taught me a lot though: humility, honesty, unconditional love and thanks to my teenagers, I also know what watered down wine tastes like.

And now you ’re going to do it again! Tell us how that came about.

own hands and, as every supportive wife would do, took those shirts to a seamstress and had them taken in a few inches. The next time he tried to get into one, it didn’t fit. He figured he had gained weight…never said a word and never wore them again. Problem solved.

I guess being a woman in a man’s world has taught you a thing or two.

It’s true; I am a woman in a business that is dominated by men. At one time I even dressed (yes, a closet of black suits and white shirts) more gender-neutral. You could say I was less comfortable with my femininity; now I embrace it. On the flip side, it is also not because I am female that I have pulled through in business; it is because I work hard and am good at what I do. That said, I still believe being a mother in business has disadvantages due to perception. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I carried very small, was quite ill throughout and cautiously kept the expectancy to myself. As luck would have it, one of our biggest financing deals was scheduled to close a week before my due date. Intuitively, I felt that advising that I needed my obstetrician to deliver before they did would send the conversation in another direction… so I did what every desperate entrepreneur who is at term would do…I wrapped my stomach with a tensor bandage, wore a loose jacket and gave the closing presentation as scheduled. They were none the wiser and she was born intact and beautiful (no bandage marks) a week later. I had her on a Friday (so I could recover on the weekend) and was back to work Monday. I couldn’t take any time off so I kept her in a hotel room next to my office with a nanny. When she woke I would go to her and run back to work during naps. You get the picture: balance!

You seem to take family just as seriously as business though.

Yes, everything comes down to family. My kids are all doing well. Four have moved out and they are all kind-hearted people that are positively moving forward in their career paths. I believe the best gifts you can give your kids are independence and functionality and the ability to think for themselves – I believe they have that.

I have a friend who sits on the board of Transforming Faces Worldwide ( Donations: transformingfaces.org ) and in partnership with the Herbie Foundation they brought a little girl from Ethiopia here to perform a rare, life-saving surgery. She had what is simply referred to a cleft face. Aesthetically, she looked different, but more critically, she did not have a forehead (there were holes in her skull). Seven operations were performed to provide this young girl the opportunity to live a well, normal life. During the long process, my friend advised me the young girl was lonely. I offered for her to stay with us while she recovered. I believe it was weeks before my husband realized a new family had moved into our house. Prior to returning home, the mother, who I have the greatest respect for, asked if I would keep (essentially adopt) her daughter. It was a touching example of a mother’s love for her to be so selfless. That, coupled with the fact that she is such an affectionate and demonstrative little girl and was already a welcome additional to our family, encouraged us to say yes. With my husband’s kids, my own and now this addition, we refer to ourselves as a merger, acquisition and start-up...possibly with the boys living overseas, we are now into import/export too.

Are you involved in any other charities?

My last book titled “Fashion Cares” is a 496-page commemorative book about the fashion industry raising money for AIDS research. It spans 25 years, from inception with the infamous Dean and Dan Caten (DSquared2) supporting the inaugural Fashion Cares Event through to their hosting the final Gala in 2012, headlined and supported by Elton John. During the research process I became passionate about the cause - realizing the struggles and difficulties for the people living with AIDS and the reality of the number of persons lost…literally - the sheer bravery of those that stepped forward and in spite of the naivety of the general public stood up for a cause and did something. They were true heroes. The things that they did then and the mountain they had to climb to do it were the platform to the progress we see today. But even with that progress, the battle is not over. There is still a need for further research. I felt strongly about this while I was putting the book together and decided to dedicate all of the net proceeds (after printing) to the Elton John Aids Foundation and ACT ( Book: fashioncaresbook.com ) There is also one other cause that I am now supporting – one close to heart. Last September, someone very close to me was diagnosed with advanced rectal cancer. She was otherwise healthy and only 58. As a single mom with five children, she had to bravely take on the battle. She has had radical rectal surgery, a permanent colostomy, a hysterectomy, radiation and chemotherapy and recently received the difficult news that the cancer had spread to her liver. The suggestion was to continue chemotherapy for another six months, which she may not have had, had she not been put into the capable hands of Dr. Scudamore at Vancouver General Hospital. He gave her more time with her family, so we are all very grateful for that and support the hospital and his research wholeheartedly (Donations to VGH: @WeCan_AnnKaplan)

What’s next for you?

I am very much at peace, so I want to just stay in the moment and appreciate it. Calmness in a life full of curve balls is a thing of beauty.

THE SEXLESS MARRIAGE -

NO NEED TO LO CK THE BEDRO OM DO OR By Maureen McGrath

M

arried couples today are connected to everything except each other. Smart phones, iPads and computers have replaced candlelight, lingerie and a lock on our bedroom doors. According to a survey done by Newsweek, 20 percent of couples have sex no more than 10 times a year, which experts define as a sexless marriage. The sexless marriage is a common problem in couples today, but it has skyrocketed amongst those one might least expect - the young and the restless. Young married couples are busier than ever, working long hours to get ahead and service astronomical debt. Add children to the mix and the pressures drastically increase leading to stress, sleep deprivation and exhaustion. The mounting pressures of raising children where family may be far away include everything from perfect party planning to play dates to early lineups ensuring junior a position at a prestigious preschool. Sex-starved marriages are certainly not limited to the young. Couples of all ages may find themselves in a union that meets infrequently beneath the sheets. The novelty of a new relationship means the frequency of sex is quite high but as the couple settles into life and routines, the sex can become, well, let’s say a little…hum drum. In fact, being in a long-term relationship may lead to boredom in the bedroom, another common reason for infrequent sex amongst many couples. Sexless marriages don’t happen overnight and stem from a variety of reasons. Surprisingly, the love may be there for the sex starved couple, but the flame has flickered and the light has all but gone out. Low sexual desire, more common in women than men, is a very common reason for a less than lacklustre love life. And the number one reason for low sexual desire is fatigue. Sally, a mother of three and the principal breadwinner of the family, says that day after day of dealing with her three children, a high stress job as a marketing director and mounting financial debt associated with a house move just before her husband lost his job leaves her exhausted at the end of each day, and the last thing on her mind is sex. It has been more than a year since this couple has been intimate with one another and that is dangerous in a relationship. Lack of sex in a relationship is a leading cause of infidelity and breakups. Medial conditions like depression or anxiety account for a number of sex-starved marriages. Anger, irritability or a general negative outlook may, in fact, be masked depression. Jealousy, resentment and loss of self-esteem have an impact on what goes on, or not, in the bedroom as well. Realizing the importance of intimacy in a relationship is the first step in healing a sexless marriage. The benefits of sex include the release of endorphins, the “feel good hormone”, and this may aid sleep, reduce pain and improve mood. So before you head out to buy twin beds, try to heal your sexual woes deal at the root cause of your problem. If finances are the issue, downsize or live within your means. Successfully tackling a problem together promotes intimacy, which may increase sexual desire. Choose a long wet kiss over an obligatory peck. Make your bedroom your oasis. Enjoy morning sex. Cortisol levels are highest in the morning, so you will have more energy to do it. Couples need to make their relationship a priority in their lives. If that means scheduling sex, then get out your iPhone, but for heaven’s sake, don’t bring it back to the bedroom.

6.7 Chaturanga: 6.8 a,b,c Vashistasana Press back into Downward Dog and then turn to the right, keeping both feet stacked on top of each other. Either lift the left arm up (6.8 b) or try the more advanced variation holding the right big toe and pressing the legs straight (6.8 c). Repeat on the other side. 6.9, Lunge: Come into Downward Dog and step the right foot between the hands. Bring the forearms to the floor and stretch the hamstring muscles for 45 seconds. Then, step back into forearm plank and repeat on the opposite leg. 6.10,12,14 Forearm Plank: Keep the forearms on the floor pressing heels and the head in opposite directions. 6.11,13 Cat Burglar: On an inhalation draw the right knee into the right armpit and exhale; come back to forearm plank, Inhale draw the left knee into the left armpit and repeat one more time on each side. 6.15 Dolphin Pose: Keep the forearms on the floor, walk the feet into the elbows and press the chest towards the feet. This is a great chest and calf muscle stretch. The press up into downward dog 6.16 a) Tittibhasana Prep Spring the feet around the hands. Reach the arms back so the palms are shoulder width distance apart. Bend the elbows so the back of the upper arms become a shelf for the legs to sit on. Keep the weight of the head forward so you don’t fall backwards. 6.16 b) For the full pose, first of all, smile! These poses go better if you are having fun. Start to straighten through the legs, slightly hugging the legs into the shoulders. Maybe the legs don’t straighten right away, but a thousand mile journey starts with the first step! Try springing back to Downward Dog. Nice one! You are getting stronger, looser, more calm and connected to your joy body.

hether I am teaching in India, North America or around the world, people always tell me, “I am just too inflexible to do yoga.” I always tell them that saying you are too inflexible to do yoga is like saying you are to dirty to have a shower. It’s a perfect reason for doing it. What most people don’t realize is that one of the many of benefits of yoga is that it develops a body that is strong and not just flexible. This is the “Core strengthening” section from my new DVD and iTunes download Earth, Body, Yoga. It will get you stronger and looser so dive in and get ready to feel and look your best. 6.1a Navasana: Balancing on your sit bones, lean back and lift both legs while pressing out with the feet. 6.1b,2a Eka Pada Navasana: Inhale; draw the right knee into the chest; exhale; straighten it. Inhale; bend the left leg; exhale; straighten it. Repeat 2 or 3 times with the breath and movement synchronized. 6.2b Parivrtta Navasana: From Navasana, lean your weight onto the right hip. Inhale; draw the heels and knees into the body and exhale; press the legs right. Do 3 sets on one side then switch to the left hip and do three more sets. 6.5 Bakasana: Come into a squat, preparing for Bakasana. Bring the knees into the armpits, with the elbows slightly bent. Lift the hips higher than the head and lean the body weight forward so the weight of the head lifts the hips up. Squeeze the arms together and straighten them. Enjoy! 6.6 Plank: Spring back into Plank pose. The key is to not let the belly sag and the back arch. Inhale; keep the arms straight and exhale; come into chaturanga (6.7 ) or push up position. Repeat three times slowly with the breath.

RETIN A: ANTI-AGING’S GOLD STANDARD By Dawne Koke

W

ith a plethora of skincare products out there, it can be difficult to determine which products, if any, live up to their claims. Companies seem to come up with new anti-aging claims almost daily. With so much information and choice out there, the question still remains: What is the best anti-aging product, or is there one? Considered the gold standard among dermatologists, Retin A is definitely one ingredient I recommend incorporating into your beauty regimen. If you haven’t started using this powerhouse product yet, read on to discover why you should.

Q- “What is Retin A and how does it work?” A- Tretinion is a derivative of vitamin A that is more commonly

known by the brand name Retin A. It works by diving below the epidermis to help stimulate elastin and collagen production while targeting fine lines and pigmentation issues. Using Retin A is not an instant gratification product; it takes time. Consistent use will reward you with smooth firmer skin for years to come.

25

|

Q- “Will it help my acne?” A- Yes. Retin A works by speeding up the rate that cells turn over,

so all those sticky dead cells won’t clog up your pores. Some may experience a short period of time where their acne seems worse, but be patient; this is natural. Around the 6 week period, any flare ups should be resolved revealing fresh new skin.

Q- “Should I stop using it if I get irritated?” A- Absolutely not. This is a strong ingredient that should be used slowly to allow skin to acclimate. Flakiness and redness should subside as your skin becomes used to it. If the prescription kind is simply too strong for you, look for less irritating formulas with lower percentages found at your local drug store.

Makeup artist and stylist Dawne Koke can be found monthly on Global BC’s Monday Morning Makeover sharing beauty and fashion insider tips and tricks. A self-proclaimed beauty zealot, you can read all her advice and product reviews at www.purekoke.com.

BENEFITS O F

JUICING By Samantha Dobo

Why juice? Research, articles, media reports: take a few moments and read on to sort it all out.

Assimilation and Digestion

Juicing allows our digestion to take a breather. Within whole fruits and vegetables is an indigestible fiber called cellulose. Cellulose houses enzymes, phytochemicals, vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals like iron, copper, potassium, sodium, iodine, and magnesium. Cold pressed juicing provides access to these nutrients by breaking down the cellulose with a ‘squeezing’ action. The nutrients can then be taken in by our cells within 15 minutes, a process that can take more than an hour when the pulp is intact. This is an energy saver for the body. The energy saved from digestion can now go to detoxifying, cleansing, or recovery from physical activity or illness.

Hydration

Juice supplies the body with alkalizing water rich in vitamins and minerals that are vital to immune and metabolic function. It is a great way supplement the recommended daily water consumption requirement of 2.2 litres for women and 3 litres for men. The adult human body is about 55-60% water. Water is vital to the life of every cell, acting as the first building material. It regulates temperature, helps metabolize and transport nutrients, flushes out waste, lubricates joints, forms saliva and acts as a shock absorber for the brain, spinal cord and, in pregnant women, protects the fetus.

Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the green pigment found exclusively in plants and algae’s. It increases the delivery of oxygen to cells by enhancing the body’s ability to produce hemoglobin. Chlorophyll contains therapeutic doses of magnesium, vitamin K, C, folic acid, iron, calcium and protein. It is necessary for rebuilding and repairing red blood cells, bone formation, nerve function, muscle function and boosting the immune system. It is proficient at chelating heavy metals from the body, is an anti-oxidant, and is anti-inflammatory. Chlorophyll is also anti-candida, anti-carcinogenic and is abundant in any green coloured natural juice!

Energy

The natural sugars found in fruit and vegetable juices come brimming with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytochemicals, not found in refined sugars. Natural sugars dish out the same energy as pop, pastries and candy, without the chemicals, rancid fats, artificial flavours and colours.

Optimize Your Juice Game

So you’ve decided to make juicing a part of your health and nutrition regimen. What next? Follow these tips to get the best results. • Stick to mostly green juices. Fruitier, sweeter juices are more of a treat, unless your lifestyle requires extra carbohydrates. • Drink on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes away from food. This allows your body better access to nutrients and uses the least amount of digestive energy. • Take your time. This isn’t a beer chugging contest. Enjoy the complex flavours, roll the juice around in your mouth, give your digestive enzymes the time they need to properly break down your healing beverage. • Sit down and relax. This engages the parasympathetic system, which is responsible for resting and digesting. • Go organic! Conventional fruits and vegetables are laden with herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. Juicing will compound these chemicals. If you are concerned about price, abide by The Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen. • Thank yourself for taking your health into your own hands. You’re amazing! THE BURLAP DRESS: AN UPDATE

I

t is not uncommon to be aware of others in need and think, “Someone should do something!” It might even progress to, “I wish I could do something!” Eighteen-year-old Courtney Barich took the next step, and gave substance to her intentions. By now you have probably heard the story. To help raise funds for the St. Martin De Porres Orphanage in the Philippines, Courtney decided not spend hundreds of dollars on a graduation dress that she would wear just once. Instead, she had a dress made from $3.00 worth of burlap fabric and used the resulting attention on broadcast and social media to promote the goal to raise $10,000 before a return visit to the orphanage in September. Courtney shared some thoughts with us about her experience, the impact on her… and others, and what the future holds. Starting with what is surely an understatement, she said, “Looking back, it got more attention than I expected. I was a little hesitant at the beginning, but I would definitely do it again. “Maybe other people will want to do it, or something like it, and it

won’t stop. People will keep on doing things to help those who need help. I’m looking forward to seeing what other people do with the idea and where they take it.” Her advice to others is as simple as it is straightforward: “Don’t think about it too much. If you have an idea or an inspiration, just follow your heart.” At eighteen, Courtney lays no claim to a fully developed life plan, but she is quick to acknowledge that the experience has impacted her life choices for the future. As she puts it, “I’m not sure of the specifics yet, but I know I want to do work that helps people.” The initial fundraising goal of $10,000 has been reached thanks to a $2,500 contribution from Delta Laser and Skincare and Lougheed Laser and Skincare, but there is still time to get involved. Donations to the cause are being accepted until September 1 when Courtney plans to visit the Philippines once again. Find out more about Courtney’s experience and learn how you can help at www.courtneysburlapgrad.ca.

WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY:

MYRA MERKAL

WHITE ROCK PRINCESS PARTY

W

hen Myra Merkal retired from her corporate career, she knew she didn’t want to sit idly. Eager to ‘refire instead of retire,’ she created the Princess Party five years ago as a way to contribute to her community and encourage the same in others.

Inspire for Women, which currently has over 600 members. It’s a great way to make friends and meet like-minded women while participating in fun activities for a good cause since all the money raised at our events also goes to the Fire Fighters Charity for the park.

TELL US WHAT PRINCESS PARTY IS. The White Rock Princess Party is an annual charity fundraiser where children are treated to an afternoon of magical fun. The highlight of the event is a real live princess who entertains and enchants the audience. This year, Queen Elsa from Frozen is our special guest and is proving to be quite popular! Our activities promote virtues such as kindness, courtesy, generosity and multiculturalism, so not only are the little ones encouraged to dress up and have fun, but they are also learning valuable character traits. Our goal is to build an all abilities park on a beautiful piece of ocean-front property here in White Rock. The park will be an outdoor space that caters to people of all ages and all abilities as a place of recreation, contemplation and community. To date we have raised $35,000. Our goal this year is $15,000.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PRINCESS AND IF SO WHY? Cinderella has been my favourite since I was a little girl. She overcame being bullied, is authentic and ended up attracting the man of her dreams.

WHAT INS PIRED SUCH A UNIQUE IDEA? It was sparked by the pride I felt in my son, Evan Bird, and seven fellow firefighters that rode bicycles across Canada for Variety Children’s Charity and my desire to support their fundraising efforts, coupled with my two beautiful granddaughters and their love of dressing up as princesses. ANY SURPRISES OR CHALLENGES YOU HADN’T ANTICIPATED? I have a sign at my front door that says ‘Expect Miracles’ and I live by that. I have been surprised by how generous people are with their support. I have had no problem getting volunteers for the party. Lots of people want to be part of an event that supports the community we live in.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF DOING WHAT YOU DO? I really love to surround myself with other women and to support each other to be our best, but what really drives me is my gratitude for having children and grandchildren. The party has become a family affair for us. My daughter-in-law Arin helps organize; my other son Jarett helps on the day of the party. My husband Steve is the most supportive man I could imagine. He supports me 100%. He even parks the cars. He is my prince, for sure. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR PRINCESS PARTY? To get better every year. Anything we can do to continue building the event that will encourage our children to have better esteem, love one another and connect to our community is success in my eyes. I envision that one day the little princesses will be our volunteers. ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN WANTING TO START/GROW THEIR OWN BUSINESS OR COMMUNITY INITIATIVE? Believe in your dream, create a vision board and align your actions with what you want. I live by Jack Canfield’s motto--If you don’t ask you won’t get, so I have had to overcome my fears and get out in the community and ask for what I want. By helping other people get what they want, I have everything I want. I give without expecting anything in return and live with an attitude of gratitude. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? When I retired, I was looking for a way to maintain friendships and build new ones, so I organized a women’s group called Love, Laugh &

GET YOUR PERSONAL FINANCES ON AUTOPILOT.

DON’T FALL BEHIND By Anita Saulite

T

he lazy days of summer are coming to a close and it’s time to shift our focus and ease into the fall season. You may be investing in yourself by going back to school to increase your skills to get your career moving in the right direction. Or maybe it’s back to school for the kids, and life back on schedule. Like most of us, summer is a time to indulge, so maybe you have spent more than you planned. Maybe you took your eye off your personal finances to enjoy some down time. It’s all very common, but taking charge of your personal finances now will prepare you for the months ahead so you don’t fall behind. Fall is a beautiful time of the year, time to look forward to the season’s change and enjoy it. It’s not really the time where we want to be reminded about personal finance issues. The challenge all of us face is finding the right balance between meeting our everyday needs and wants while embracing big picture thinking and looking to our future. On the one hand, you want to be living your best life now, and on the other hand, you need to plan for the future. Often these two paths seem to compete against each other, but they don’t need to if you take control of your personal finances and put them on auto-pilot. In the fall, retail season or the reason to shop picks up with a vengeance and you will be tempted to spend. Spend mindfully on goal related pursuits. Harness your thoughts and emotions while shopping so you spend your money on activities and things that accelerate your agenda. Catch the beginning of any bad mood or celebration that may propel you to shop on impulse. Everyone needs a pick me up now and then, but don’t let your pick me ups create undue hardship or surprises at month’s end. Know where you stand. Empower yourself by knowing where your money goes and don’t get in the pattern of a money in/money out scenario. Create a spending plan that meets your everyday needs as this will help you feel more in control of your life because you will know where you stand. There will be no guesswork or surprises each month. You will enhance your peace of mind and worry less. Stick to it. Make it work for you. Put your personal finances on automatic pilot. What do I mean by this? Set up automatic bill payments so you pay all of your bills or commitments on time. This helps reduce paper clutter, and manages your credit more effectively. Setting up an automatic savings plan or retirement plan to direct money away from spending to saving will help manage any unforeseen events and secure retirement savings. Get your fi-

nances on a plan to set it and forget it. Best of all, you can watch it grow. Review all of your policies. It seems more prudent these days to review all of your policies (life, disability, home, auto) to make sure you know what coverage you have. And if it’s time to get new policies in place, that time is now. If you are experiencing a life transition or if something has changed in your life, for example, the birth of a new child, you will want to make sure you and your loved ones are protected for the unexpected. Update or get a will. Life can throw us a curve ball at any time. Be in control. Worry less and know what you have. When you automate your personal finances, you empower yourself to focus less on everyday personal finance issues, and can focus on building and growing your wealth. You will find peace of mind, and help you live your best life today. Take your to-do list and make it your done list. Your time is valuable and finite. By managing your money with more precision, awareness and mindfulness, you will be in the driver’s seat. By embracing big picture thinking, simple good living is possible. Be inspired. Be happy. Don’t fall behind.
