BEATING HOLIDAY FO O D STRESS By Connie Pretula
‘Tis the season for office parties and socializing with friends and family – and a seemingly endless supply of sweets and treats. If you’re stressed about staying on track with healthy eating during the holidays, fear not! These tips will help you avoid common pitfalls and start the New Year on the right foot. A RECIPE FOR FAILURE Healthy eating is the key to healthy living. We are all tempted, though, by not-so-healthy cravings – and that’s OK. Depriving yourself of an occasional treat is a recipe for failure. When I severely restrict myself, I eventually find my finger hovering over a box of chocolates trying to determine which is next. Oh sure, it starts with ‘just one’ but with an overload of stress hormones we naturally crave sugar (it’s that darn fight or flight trigger). If you’re in a constant state of deprivation, one chocolate or sugar cookie can lead you off track for a long time and leave you feeling bad. So go ahead and enjoy an occasional treat – just do it in moderation and balance it with healthier food choices. 3 WAYS TO GET A LITTLE WIGGLE RO OM IN YOUR HOLIDAY FO O D CHOICES 1. Plan it out – Take a few minutes on Thursday or Friday to think about the following week. If it’s a busy one, prepare meals on the weekend. For example, pop a roast or a whole chicken in the oven, clean and cut up some clean vegetables to store in an airtight container. These quick fixes will keep you on track when you don’t have time to cook. While you’re in the kitchen, make some hard-boiled eggs to have on the run. 2. Veg out – When navigating food choices at parties, fill your plate with veggies. If they are raw, choose the ones you like best without dip. I always tell my clients, veggies are free. 3. Get out – Find ways to squeeze a little exercise into your busy holiday schedule. You may not have time to hit the gym but you can get off the bus two stops early or park a little farther

from the mall and take a brisk walk. The same thinking applies to elevators. Get out a few floors from your destination and take the stairs. These tips will give you a little wiggle room if you indulge just a little during the holidays. But what happens if you overindulge? You know the feeling. It’s because your liver is working overtime to process the sugar, fats and alcohol. A late night will tax your body even further. OVERINDULGENCE REMEDY When you wake up, squeeze half of a fresh lemon into a cup of warm water (I buy them by the bagful at Costco); then add ½ teaspoon of honey and ¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric. The lemon kick-starts your digestion and it provides additional help to your liver and kidneys after working all night to process what you ate the night before. Turmeric is excellent for calming the digestive system, but be sure to check with your doctor first if you have diabetes or gallbladder issues, or if you are pregnant or nursing. You know you’re going to stray from your healthy-eating habits during the holidays. We all do it! Simply set realistic expectations for yourself and, with a little planning, you can quickly get back on track in 2015.

FOREVER BARE BBL HAIR REMOVAL: SAY GO O D- BYE TO PAINFUL LASER HAIR REMOVAL SESSIONS By Amanda Beisel
H
air removal can be a time consuming daily routine for many people. While shaving, waxing, and tweezing are effective for removing the hair, they do not provide long term solutions for hair removal - never mind all those bumps and ingrown hairs. Over a decade ago, technological advancements led to the creation of laser hair removal, which eliminated these annoying problems and led to long-term hair removal solutions. The only downside is that the treatments are very painful and the risk of being burnt has scared many people away. In 2013, technology took a huge leap forward and has changed the hair removal industry once again. The brilliant team at Sciton Laser launched the Forever Bare BBL Hair Removal System. This technology is not only as effective as traditional laser hair removal methods, but it is much safer, and way more comfortable for the client. You can throw away your numbing cream along with your anxiety and rest assured the treatment will be quick, safe and comfortable. If you are a waxer, no more painful wax strips, irritation, or ingrown hairs. Some clients have actually described the Forever Bare BBL treatments as relaxing. Forever Bare BBL just may be one of the most exciting creations to come from the Silicon Valley.
for some reason, the waxing prices have increased. It is guaranteed you will be asking yourself why you waited so long to make the switch.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Traditionally, hair removal devices apply all of their energy to any given area all at once. By sending multiple lower fluence pulses at a high repetition rate, Forever Bare BBL provides a treatment that is safe, fast, efficacious, and comfortable. The motion BBL technology allows for extremely even heating of hair follicles and minimizes missed areas that occur with traditional laser hair removal devices. By increasing the temperature of the hair follicle to therapeutic levels gradually and keeping the skin protected with cooling, Forever Bare BBL can effectively treat up to skin type V.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED? Every body part has a different hair growth cycle. For example, Brazilian and underarms are on a six-week growth cycle. This means you will come in for your treatments every six weeks. After a couple of treatments, clients generally experience a significant reduction in hair along with an overall slower growth pattern. You can expect to see an average of 10-15% reduction after each session and an average of 8 sessions are required for maximum hair reduction. It is important to keep in mind that the number of sessions you will need depends on many factors including areas of the body being treated, skin colour, coarseness of hair, sex, hormones and any underlying health conditions.
ARE YOU STILL WAXING? Many people continue waxing because they are scared of being burned by lasers, the high cost, and lack of understanding of how long-term hair removal works. In actuality, Forever Bare BBL is more cost effective, and more comfortable than waxing. Rather than committing your life to waxing, the Forever Bare BBL treatment takes an average of 6-10 sessions to achieve desired results. Plus, you no longer have grow out your hair before treatments. You can shave as much as you want between hair removal sessions – just no waxing or tweezing because the hair needs to be sitting in the follicle for an effective treatment. The interesting thing to note is that the cost of permanent hair removal treatments has gone down over the years, but

SAY GO O D- BYE TO INGROWN HAIRS AND IRRITATION Ingrown hairs are a common problem when shaving or waxing. Forever Bare BBL is the best solution to eliminate those pesky ingrown hairs. The reason is simple - when hair stops growing it can no longer form an ingrown hair. Forever Bare BBL is also a great option for clients with sensitive skin. There is no pulling on the skin or intense heat blasts that can lead to rashes, or irritation. The cool gel and gliding method cause no harm to the skin. ARE THE RESULTS PERMANENT? Laser Hair Removal and Forever Bare Hair Removal can result in permanent reduction of the hair. It is important for consumers to understand exactly what permanent reduction means in this industry. It does not mean 100% reduction for the rest of your life, but rather 70-100 % percent reduction. New hairs may appear overtime, but in most cases it is finer, easier to manage hair. Of course target treatments can always be performed later to remove these finer hairs, stubborn hairs.
HOW DO I CHO OSE THE RIGHT CLINIC? The most important thing to look for is a clinic that offers a complimentary consultation and patch test. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you have and allows your laser technician to educate you on the treatment and the process to determine if you are a good candidate. Be sure to look for a clinic that is reputable with many happy clients. SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic in Yaletown is currently the only clinic in British Columbia offering the Forever Bare BBL Technology at this time.

From Sex to Sensitivity:
KIM CATTRALL’S New Passion Project
By Liberty Craig
A
s a sexy, fabulous, and fabulously outspoken Sex And The City star, Kim Cattrall redefined the single urban power female through the character of Samantha Jones. Wildly confident and unapologetically sexual, Cattrall’s Samantha shattered taboos under stiletto heels before kicking those same heels up with girlfriends who trumped the guys at every turn. Two generations of women adored these ladies as we followed them through the trials of life, love, relationships and friendship. Samantha’s cohorts (Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda) were the beautiful, successful thirty-somethings still considering a future that could involve marriage and children. Samantha, on the other hand, was a fortyish glamour dragon who eschewed commitment and chewed through the men. The brazen siren made mature women sexier than ever before and laughed in the face of Father Time. Now, at 58, Cattrall sees the world a little differently. “Your fifties are fascinating,” said Cattrall. “There’s a vulnerability. Things are changing.” Enter Sensitive Skin, Cattrall’s heartfelt new series on HBO Canada. Based on a British series by the same name, Cattrall made it her passion project to adapt the show for a North American audience. Together with esteemed Canadian actor-writer-director Don Mckellar, Cattrall has succeeded. As Davina and Al, a couple of 30 years struggling to redefine themselves and their marriage, Cattrall and Mckellar are hauntingly, convincingly dysfunctional. “We met four years ago, and I felt like I’d known this guy my whole life,” remarked Cattrall. And it shows. While the marriage is suffering, so too is Davina, a former model struggling with a perceived loss of beauty as Father Time has his way with her. “If I’m battling these questions, then other women are too,” commented Cattrall. And so she breaks down barriers once again. “I feel like this is the best thing I’ve ever done,” she said, “because it feels truth-

ful.” When I met with Cattrall as she passed through Vancouver, she in an impeccable white suit that complemented her fit frame, stunning jawline and perfect diction, her mood was open and honest and the conversation was raw. In Davina, Cattrall is expressing a vulnerability felt by many and expressed by few: How did it happen that my age is defining me? And who the hell am I, anyway? Below, Cattrall reflects upon her roots on Vancouver Island, the trials of fame, the travails of aging, and her ground-breaking new show. DEFINING HOME “A few years ago, I didn’t know where I lived. My work was mostly in England, I lived in New York City, my production company is in Toronto, and my family is on Vancouver Island. My dad passed away about two-and-a-half years ago, which was a huge event in my life. I started to think differently about home in the sense of coming back, full circle. My life has always been a triangle: born in Liverpool, England; raised in Canada; educated and lived most of my adult life in the United States. My first theatre job was in Vancouver. I was waitressing at night and doing theatre in the day: one-act plays in the business district in a little doughnut shop that was turned into a lunchtime theatre. I feel rooted here because I took some very important steps here. And I could do this wonderful thing when I wasn’t working – I could go home and be with family. I think of myself as a British Canadian. From British Columbia.” DISCOVERING SENSITIVE SKIN “I found the show nine years ago and I’d never seen anything like it. Growing up, I watched Mary Tyler Moore, then Murphy Brown. Their friends were their families. And even more so with Sex And The City.

“
Women have come a long way but we still need to stretch and examine and embrace life for ourselves.
But what then, for my generation? The baby boomers are the biggest audience out there and we are completely ignored. I thought to myself, what this woman is going through is what I am going through. I was never a model, I’ve never been in a 30-year relationship, I’ve never had a child, but I can imagine those things. It’s about life. It’s about humanity. It’s about that time in your life when you went left; should you have gone right?” AGING IS NOT FOR SISSIES “We all age. It’s not a disease; it’s a part of life. But your age becomes who you are. It’s louder and bigger than you. And who are you, by the way? “I think most women – no matter how beautiful others may think they are, no matter how many facials or how much Botox – look in the mirror and say, I don’t like that. And you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t when it comes to plastic surgery. Aging is not for sissies, as Betty Davis would say. Doing those scenes made me feel very vulnerable, because it’s so private. I did a film in which I played the underbelly of a character like Samantha Jones: a former porn star living in a trailer park. People told me I was brave to gain twenty pounds and make myself look rough for the role, and I was! But playing Davina is much braver because it is more real, more subtle, and scarier.” THE DANGERS OF BEAUTY AND FAME “Beauty is a terrifying thing. So is fame. You can be ignored. Men can be scared to date you. It can be very isolating. I get lonely, I get depressed, I feel everything that other people feel – sometimes more, because when you are in the public eye, the scrutiny is impossible. It’s what you did say, what you didn’t say. I’m so lucky that I have good friends and collaborators. They’re not going to blow smoke. As you become more successful, you find fewer people who can do that for you. My family keeps me an-

chored. Liverpudlians are really tough! No matter where I was at in my career, my dad would say: so what are you working on? And I’d think, oh fuck, what am I working on?” THE CONUNDRUM OF MARRIAGE “Marriage maybe isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s work. Davina and Al are leading separate lives. She’s missing something in her life, and she hasn’t found it in her marriage, ever. Thirty years is a long time. And you think: is this how I want to spend my next thirty years – my last thirty years? So many of us look at what we have and say, well, it’s good enough. Davina is questioning that. But it’s terrifying. My mother’s generation couldn’t even get near it. Divorce is much more common in my generation, but it’s like a death. Do you want to face that death?” THE KIM CATTRALL FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH “I am doing work that I’m passionate about and it gets me up in the morning. I’m really happy in that aspect of my life. I’m invested; I’m tackling things that I don’t know the answers to. When you’re young, you’re curious, you’re asking questions and you’re not fear-based. It’s that curiosity that gets me out of bed and makes me feel really good, particularly when I’m feeling lonely or isolated through whatever circumstances. Women have come a long way but we still need to stretch and examine and embrace life for ourselves. That’s all I can do, from my point of view. I can’t change the way society thinks about me. I can instigate something that I am interested in and committed to, and that’s the best place to be.”

INTERVIEW WITH
Dr. Jaspaul Riar
WHAT DREW YOU TO PO DIATRY? In college, I shadowed a few podiatrists to learn more about the profession. The biggest draws for me were the amount of time that was spent with each patient and the immediate relief they got from treatment. I quickly learned it was a rewarding profession that encouraged dialogue and helped people “get back on their feet.” WHERE WERE YOU EDUCATED? I grew up in Vancouver and, at a young age, aspired to go to UBC. I eventually earned my Bachelor of Science degree there before a rigorous four years at Temple University in Philadelphia, where I earned my Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. I then moved to Portland, Oregon to undergo surgical training at Legacy Hospital (a level 1 trauma facility). Upon completion of my residency, I took my board exams and got licensed to practice in British Columbia. WHY DID YOU CHO OSE TO SET UP YOUR PRACTICE WHERE YOU DID? A great deal of thought went into this decision, as there are several areas of the Lower Mainland that are under-served when it comes to foot care. When I looked at the city of Surrey, I saw a rising population that was dependent on only six podiatrists. North Surrey is now the epicenter of technological and health care growth, so it made sense for me to establish a practice around the Surrey Memorial Hospital campus. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PO DIATRY? Podiatry is relatively a young profession, having its origins in the United States in the early 20th century. With a greater demand for foot specialists after the First World War, the occupation evolved and the scope of podiatry expanded. The foundation of our care is having a mastery of the mechanics of the foot. Slowly, our specialty gained more prescribing rights, surgical privileges and residency genesis. This helped foster our inclusion in major health care plans. Western Canada was influenced by the US model, and it has helped shaped podiatry today in BC. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? The average person walks between 5,000 to 10,000 steps per day. Most of the time, we don’t think about our feet and we take them for granted.
However, when they hurt or there is concern about them, they are hard to ignore. There are also many systemic issues that can manifest in the foot and ankle and impact our function. When these conditions occur, it’s important to be evaluated early. When ailments are neglected, they can worsen and conservative care options may be less effective. WHAT ARE SOME THINGS TO BE ON THE LO OKOUT FOR WITH OUR FEET AND WHEN IS A VISIT TO YOU ADVISED? Daily foot monitoring and foot care is important to ensure that you are able to perform your daily activities. When suspicious skin lesions, aches and problems occur, abnormal changes need to be carefully analysed. For example, a fungal infection of the skin can easily appear as dry skin or a minor rash to the untrained eye. If left untreated, this can worsen and also affect others around you. The same error can be made where people mistake a wart (a viral infection) for a corn. Whenever there is a concern with the foot and ankle, especially one that has not been improving in spite of supportive measures, it’s best to see a podiatrist for advanced treatment. WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE LO OK FOR WHEN CHO OSING A PO DIATRIST? As with any specialist, you are looking to build a relationship with someone. That health professional should be an individual who you are comfortable getting treated by. The doctor must be a licensed practitioner who is a member in good standing. This can always be checked with the College of Podiatric Surgeons of British Columbia. Other aspects that should be considered are well-rounded training, regular lecturing to the public, continued research, and a strong rapport with other doctors and the public. WHERE CAN PEO PLE LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS FIELD? One of the best resources for patients regarding foot care is www.foothealthfacts.org. This site was created by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons to help educate patients about various foot conditions. The BC Podiatric Medical Association has a great website that provides more detail about podiatry in British Columbia as well as local events (bcpodiatrists.ca). For more information about our clinic and the services we offer, please visit www.drriar.com.

You Don’t Have to Settle for
“Good Enough” By Dr Kelvin Mah
H
earing the success stories of my patients always brings a smile to my face, probably because they all end with patients gushing over the improved function and appearance of their teeth and smiles! So, sitting down to write this month’s article has been interesting because it didn’t reach its happy conclusion (from start to finish) for more than 15 years. It just goes to show that finding what you’re looking for doesn’t always happen instantaneously, but can be achieved with the right care and attention from a dental professional who is invested in your oral health and wellness. I met Glen for the first time in 1999. Ten years prior to that, he suffered a soccer injury that damaged his front tooth. “I didn’t just break any tooth. I broke my front tooth. Basically, I was faced with the potential of a gaping hole that would be front and centre when talking to clients and colleagues at work, family at home, and friends anywhere. I was extremely anxious of going out and about with a face more suitable for a hockey player getup at Halloween,” said Glen. He was referred to a well-known cosmetic dentist to have a crown placed, hoping to restore the tooth, but it didn’t work. He trusted this cosmetic dentist, but his results were less than satisfactory. The tooth was not restored to its former appearance and there was discolouration between Glen’s natural teeth and his new crown; it stood out quite noticeably. “I was never happy with it,” he said, “it looked like a ‘fake tooth’.” Glen became my patient after his accident and after he had his crown placed. Over the years, he would express discontent over the appearance of his smile with the crown, but he never committed to changing it. Looking back, he was probably worried by going through all the trouble of having all this work done again, and receiving poor results. There even came a point when he asked me not to bring up the subject on his biannual checkup appointments. It was obviously a sore subject that affected his self-confidence. The message here? Glen settled for just “good enough” for a very long time. This past March, Glen phoned me; he had a dental accident during a ski trip. Funnily enough, it wasn’t a result of skiing, but a result of breaking his tooth while eating. I cleared my schedule right away (it was a Saturday) and he came in to see me so that we could figure out what to do and discuss what steps to take next. It turns out that he fractured the tooth that had a crown placed on it all those years ago, and the tooth now needed to be removed. Needless to stay, he was very nervous about what to do next. We sat down to discuss a plan of action and went into a comprehensive discussion about his concerns with his past treatment and how this one would be better and different. (I think it overwhelmed Glen to hear me go into such detail during this discussion, but it was important for him to understand each option he had available and to be sure he was comfortable and confident with whatever decision he made). I listened very carefully to determine exactly “what” he wanted and deciphered his wants through “how” he was answering me. By putting the “what” and the “how” together, I realized that “good enough” would not be good enough this time around. The only viable option was to remove the tooth and replace it with an implant and a crown. “Dr. Mah put my fears at rest pretty quickly,” said Glen. I referred Glen to Dr. Frederick Li, a colleague who works exclusively with dental implants. It was important that I work with a colleague
27

that shares similar values and a commitment to excellence. Glen told me that our office was completely there for him throughout every step, not only to help in terms of organizing, but ensuring he was getting the most out of this process for optimal results. Dr. Li removed Glen’s fractured tooth and simultaneously placed a dental implant where the removed tooth had been. After waiting six months for the bone to heal around the implant, we were able to proceed with making Glen’s new crown. Prior to placing the crown in September, we proceeded with a couple of minor touch ups (I think they also restored his confidence in cosmetic dentistry–phew!). First, we brightened Glen’s smile with ZOOM whitening, an inoffice procedure that only takes one visit. As a quick side note, many of our patients find that as the colour of their smile begins to yellow and become more dull, it ages them; whitening your teeth is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to look and, therefore, feel younger. Glen preferred to call the term teeth “colouring” because he didn’t want an artificial-looking smile (remember that Friends episode with Ross?), but I assured him that, in reality, teeth will never be overly white and all of my patients have been greatly pleased with the teeth whitening results that I’ve delivered. We followed the whitening with some minor reshaping of the gum tissue around the proposed new crown. This step is often overlooked but has a profound effect on the final appearance of the crown. We also worked with Frontier Dental Labs, which specializes in highly esthetic cases. Again, a high degree of coordination and communication between the lab and me is mandatory to success in a case such as this. It’s always that one additional step I’m willing to take for the wellness of my patients. Glen’s final result is a natural-looking dental implant and crown that blends perfectly with his natural smile. “I was recently at my eldest daughter’s soccer game talking to another parent, telling the story of getting elbowed in soccer when I was young and losing my tooth.” said Glen. “The parent stared inches from my face and was incredulous because he didn’t know which tooth it was. He told me my teeth were great and it was all thanks to Dr. Mah.” I’m so happy to have been a part of Glen’s smile story and to know that he is extremely thrilled that his new smile could look so wonderful and esthetically attractive. Rather than settling for “good enough” this time around, he’s succeeded in getting the results that he’s always wanted.
Dr Kelvin P. Mah is driven to “enrich lives, one smile at a time.” He believes in helping people – not merely treating problems – and takes a dedicated, personal interest in the health, wellness and happiness of each individual patient. FO CUS ON WOMEN
MALENE GROTRIAN By Rachael Biggs
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO CREATE FOR A LIVING?
My first inkling that I had a creative career ahead of me was when my mom commented on some sketches I did at the age of 6. She said, “I think that you will have a career within drawing and sketching one day,” and I remember thinking, is that really a job? I was fascinated by sketching clothing and decided that I wanted to be a fashion designer and to have my own business. Since I have always been very determined, it was a blessing to know at such a young age what I wanted to be.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO PURSUE THAT DREAM AND HOW DID IT LEAD YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TO DAY?
I’m from Denmark where there is a lot of competition to get into good design schools, so after high school, I spent 3 years in various private courses to advance my illustration and fine art skills and get accepted to my school of choice. Upon graduation, I interned with a Canadian tailor who ended up hiring me, which brought me to Canada in 2004. After working in the fashion industry for 4 years, I felt equipped to start my own label in 2008 here in Vancouver. My brand catapulted to popularity after receiving the first-ever standing ovation at Vancouver Fashion week in their 10-year history. I was also invited to New York fashion week in my first year of business and became a household name in Vancouver within a few years for the female executives, who have been loyal shoppers at my boutique (on the 9th floor of the Dominion Building in Gastown) ever since.
YOU HAVE RECENTLY SHIFTED FROM FASHION INTO PAINTING. CAN YOU SHARE WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THAT REALM?
In 2013, on a trip to Denmark, I had an epiphany. I was painting abstracts like I always did when I went home, but what was different was that it brought some perspective to the lack of creativity in my design business and how my enjoyment had diminished. I didn’t have the same fulfillment that I initially did and I realized that running the design and manufacturing business was 10% creativity and 90% business management and that my creativity was starving! So I decided to bring the enjoyment of painting into my daily life again. In the fall of 2013, I started sharing my art by donating 3 pieces to Ovarian Cancer Research at one of my fashion shows. They created
29
|
a bidding war and I quickly had my first clients. I was astounded that people liked my art; it felt like something I was doing for me, so I had a difficult time wrapping my head around the idea that it was sellable. I decided to do an art show to get a feeling for the interest and had my first art exhibit in November 2013 where more pieces sold. In June of 2014, I renovated my space in Gastown to display my art and that has all led to where I am today, which is pursuing the art full-time, having closed the boutique.
WHAT INS PIRES YOU?
Inspiration can come from anywhere; it’s just a matter of being open to it. Nature is a big one for me. I live in Squamish and driving the Sea to Sky Highway observing the water, mountain silhouettes, sky and cloud formations are some of the best moments of my day.
TELL US ABOUT WHAT THE PRO CESS OF CREATING A NEW LINE OR PIECE OF ART IS LIKE FOR YOU. HOW DOES IT BEGIN?
Be it clothing or art, the process is very similar. I just start and one step leads to the next. In order to get out of my head and relax, I will play music so that it becomes more about the process than the result. I always know when a painting is complete, even though I might not know if I like it. It becomes its own entity and I go through a process of getting to know it by moving it around my studio and home and observing it from different angles. The next step is sharing. Being the curious person that I am, I ask people what they see in the painting. This is like going on a journey into the art through the eyes of others. Since it is abstract, there is no right or wrong answer and it expands the viewer’s mind and opens up my own. Tapping into our subconscious resources is a gift.
WHAT’S NEXT?
I will continue to do what I love, creating and connecting. My art allows me to share what I have learned and get involved through consulting and mentoring, so I am very grateful. Life has a lot of meaning when we live up to our full potential and realize the influence we have. Rachael Biggs studied Creative Writing at UCLA and boasts an eclectic resume including on-camera celebrity interviews, press coverage for film, commercial scripts and copywriting as well as contributing to several print and on-line publications. Her novel, Yearning for Nothings and Nobodies was published in 2012 and a screen adaptation is in the works.

JP MODE SALON
JP Mode Salon is a full-concept Davines salon that opened in June of this year and has been off to a smashing start including placing as an ecofinalist in the Davines Worldwide Hair Tour in London. The team has quickly gained a reputation as going above and beyond with their green practices incorporating a living wall, energy efficiency for a low carbon footprint and creative upcycling of packaging and waste, including hair trimmings being repurposed for oil-spill clean up. Joanne Papp opened the salon with the goal of allowing west coast women to take pride in their appearance and grooming while still feeling like themselves, whether that be in yoga pants or a business suit. “Having traveled internationally and met all kinds of women, I know that we all want to take pride in our appearance,” she says. Head stylist John Paul Sason and head colorist Kan Ogata were a large part of the collaborative effort to open the salon as Joanne wanted nothing but the best. Both boys are Vidal Sassoon trained at Suki and have over twenty years of combined experience. They keep current with their education and offer downtown talent without downtown prices. In accordance with their above-and-beyond philosophy, the salon also offers ‘head treatments’ which consist of hair analysis and recommendations from the full line of Davines products that JP Mode carries. In addition to its sustainability practices and global awareness, the salon is also actively involved in the community with plans to work with the Semiahmoo House Society to provide employment to those with mental and physical challenges in the New Year. “We take pride in what we do”, says Joanne. “It’s all about clients having an outstanding experience.”

PERFORMANCE AND CONDITIONING STUDIO
23seven Performance and Conditioning Studio is a personal training studio that offers the advantage of groups no larger than six people in order to provide personal attention to each client at an affordable price. They also offer on-on-one training and doubles for even more personalized attention. “The key concepts in what we do are intention and technique,” says founder and nurse Balraj Gill. “If someone comes in with the goal of fitting into that little red dress for Christmas, we hang it up for her to see, get to work with exercise and nutritional support and then take measurements every 4-6 weeks until we’ve arrived at the goal. We keep you accountable and don’t let you give up, but it’s on your terms. Your training does not end post-workout; we keep in touch with you as often as you would like to ensure your success.” After an initial consultation, a 12-week movement-based program comprised of stretching, lifting, plyometrics, rowing, ladder drills, bands, mixed martial arts yoga and kettleball training is created. The focus is on taking it slow for injury prevention and alleviating existing pain to facilitate better health. “Our trainers consult with clients’ physiotherapists and chiropractors, sometimes even going to appointments with them to determine the best course of action for maximum results,” says Gill. With a little devotion and a lot of encouragement from the coaches, expect to see benefits including less fat and more muscle, increased strength, agility and endurance, fewer injuries, stronger bones and improved self-confidence. It’s time to take charge and feel great about yourself!

Can I wear just oil and no moisturizer What is Microcurrent Rejuvenation on my skin during the winter season? and how can I benefit from it? Moisturizers are a skincare essential during the winter months due to the combination of cold weather and indoor heat. Moisturizers hold water in the skin, provide hydration and form a protective barrier on your skin. This barrier separates you from the outside environment keeping your skin safe from external factors. It is very taxing on the skin when it is exposed to cold temperatures outside and dry heat indoors, often leading to a loss of hydration and water in the skin. This manifests on the skin as dryness and, at times, flaking skin. Properly formulated oils are a great addition to a winter skincare routine, but they should be applied under your moisturizer.
As we age, our biological current and chemical energy slow down causing cellular renewal to take much longer. Microcurrent is low-level electricity that mirrors the body’s own electrical currents. This allows a cellular reaction to enhance the production of collagen and elastin, also increasing hydration and circulation. Microcurrent can create optimal facial and body rejuvenation. It specifically re-educates the muscle to remain in a healthy state, in turn creating firmer smoother tighter looking skin. Stimulation with Microcurrent/Bio Stimulation/Bio Electric Therapy is very important for natural repair. Each tissue in the body has individualized frequencies. The vibration of each atom, each tissue type, varies specifically from conditions such as trauma, inflammation, stress and environmental influences. The desired effect is to neutralize those irregular frequencies in the body. With each treatment an accumulation of balanced energy within the cells produces a healthy noticeable texture and tone to the skin. Treatments are accumulative, painless and comfortable. Microcurrent treatments should be repeated at appropriate intervals, until the cause and effect principle becomes permanent. Instead of getting regular mainstream facial treatments, try incorporating Microcurrent to enhance your natural beauty, and over all well-being.
