hat is your favourite time of year?” someone asked me the other day. Without thinking twice, I answered, “Spring.” I live in Vancouver, and I think I speak for most of us who live in this amazing city when I say that, as much as we love it here, the never-ending rain gets to be somewhat depressing through the fall and winter. We long to see the first sign of blooming flowers and to worship the cherry blossoms that come and go so quickly. And when you love this longwaited time of year, you can’t wait to lose your warm winter coats and dark colours and start wearing bright, fun colours! We have lots of spring must-haves in this issue to help us forget the winter blues! In this issue, we feature the host and co-anchor of CTV Morning Live, Keri Adams. Keri is an impressive woman. She shares with us her personal story about being a single mother, her successful career, and how being her authentic self works for her. Keri, you inspire us! Fresh Magazine is sponsoring the WNORTH Conference in Whistler, BC, at Nita Lake Lodge from April 20 to 22. In this issue, we feature WNORTH Conference founder Heather Odendaal. For more information about WNORTH, visit WNORTHConference.com. For the second year, Fresh is sponsoring ART! Vancouver at the Vancouver Convention Centre from May 26 to May 29. You don’t want to miss this event, which will feature artists from all over the world. More information can be obtained at ArtVancouver.net. Beauty, fashion, inspiration, empowerment—you’ll find it all inside Fresh Magazine!

MARCH/APRIL 2016
T
ransform your morning smoothie into an anti-aging elixir with the addition of four youth-enhancing ingredients. I am a self-confessed superfoods junkie and this addiction serves my mind, body and spirit, keeping me healthy and energized. Having a smoothie in the morning is a great way to feed your body a high dose of nutrition, antioxidants and superfoods. What are you putting in your smoothie? Gone are the days of yogurt, juice and high sugar smoothies. You want your smoothie to sustain you throughout the day. The best way to do this is to pack it full of cell-nourishing, collagenboosting, glow-enhancing, powerhouse ingredients. Aside from great looking skin, you can also expect improved energy, mood, bone health, and joint health. Your body is your temple and your skin protects you, so it deserves daily love and nourishment.
MY TOP 4 SKIN AND BODY NOURISHING INGREDIENTS
#1: COLLAGEN. Fight those lines and wrinkles. Collagen is a natural “anti-aging” protein that makes up about a third of the protein content in your body. Collagen, and elastin give the skin its firmness, elasticity, strength and structure. Over time, your collagen production slows down and is disrupted as part of the natural aging process. Great news is that you can replenish your collagen levels with a high quality supplement. Your skin, joints, hair, and bones will benefit from this healthy habit. Remember that your lifestyle is in direct correlation to the health of your collagen too. Environmental stresses, nutrition, skin damage, cigarette smoke, recreational drugs, unhealthy diet, too much sugar, and alcohol will accelerate the loss of collagen. So it may be time to reassess your lifestyle and make some healthy changes that will benefit your health. Get rid of the old collagen killing habits to invite in collagen loving habits. Recommended Product: TruMarine Collagen Supplement (Made in Canada)
#2: HYALURONIC ACID. Plump up and nourish the skin.
#4: TUMERIC. Fight Inflammation and slow down aging.
Hyaluronic acid is an essential component of the skin because of its ability to promote collagen. Collagen firms the skin while hyaluronic acid nourishes and hydrates the collagen. Hyaluronic acid retains the water, keeping the collagen moist and elastic. The reason hyaluronic acid is essential in skin care is because it retains 1,000 times its weight in water within the skin’s cells. No other biological substance can retain as much water as hyaluronic acid making our skin smooth and soft with few wrinkles.
Tumeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory that has a long list of skin and health benefits. The active ingredient is curcumin which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Adding a 1/3 tsp of curcumin to your smoothie each day will reduce age accelerating inflammation. It also has been proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes, and depression.
Young people have plump, smooth, and highly elastic skin because they have high concentrations of hyaluronic acid. As we grow older, the body produces less hyaluronic acid, causing the hyaluronic acid concentration in the skin to fall. Around age 40, aging becomes more visible as our skin loses elasticity, forming lines and wrinkles. Just like your collagen needs topping up each day, so does your hyaluronic acid. Just 2 tsp a day in your smoothie will ensure your skin, and joints are functioning at their optimal levels. This supplement is also great for dry scalp, and those prone to eczema and dry patches. Recommended Supplement: 10x Hyaluronic Molecule by Fountain Beauty (Made in Canada)
#3: GLUTATHIONE. Turn back the hands of time. Glutathione is a must-have in a serious anti-aging program. It is a substance found in every cell in the body. It acts as an antioxidant to neutralize free radicals and prevent cellular damage. Glutathione levels in the body start to decrease as we get older; and a decline of glutathione in the body will speed up the aging process. Glutathione has been proven to help lighten pigmentation and reduce melasma as well as bring a bright glow back to your complexion. Supplementing with Glutathione is a must in an anti-aging program and also for those looking to achieve and maintain optimal health. Recommended Supplement: Glow Molecule by Fountain Beauty (Made in Canada)
Recommended Supplement: Organic Traditions Full Spectrum Tumeric Powder
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT Start each day in a strong way by nourishing your body with nutrients, antioxidants, and superfoods. You will start to feel an increase in overall energy, a decrease in your stress levels, and a more balanced state of being. Aside from those incredible benefits, your skin will start to look brighter and healthier. Make today the day you start honouring your body and consciously choose what goes into it. Remember, you truly are what you eat.
MY YOUTH ACTIVATOR SMOOTHIE • Big handful of spinach or greens of your choice • Half a banana • Few pieces of cucumber • Few sprigs of parsley • 4 cacao beans • Half cup of frozen fruit • 1 tbsp of organic pumpkin seed protein powder • 1 tsp of tumeric powder • 2 tsp of 10x Hyaluronic Acid by Fountain Beauty • 1 packet of TruMarine Collagen • 1 tsp of Glow Molecule by Fountain Beauty • Fountain of Youth by Beauty Blenz • Half a cup of organic unsweetened almond milk • 1 cup of water You can stop here or add other fruits, veggies, or superfoods of your choice.

o look at Keri Adams is to see everything that just about any woman aspires to. Certainly she is gorgeous, but she is also intelligent and talented, evidenced by her impressive career in journalism and her current role as Host and CoAnchor of CTV Morning Live. She is adored by her two beautiful daughters. She regularly hosts events for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. And let’s not forget her recurring role on the critically acclaimed television show Arrow. To top it all off, everybody likes her! By all accounts, Adams is genuinely personable and wellliked, not to mention funny as heck (so says Whoopi Goldberg). To peer a little more closely is to find that Adams is a real, complex person, living a normal, complicated life that extends far beyond the relative glamour of television. Recently separated from her sports anchor husband, Adams is navigating a new level of “doing it all.” Often, she feels overwhelmed. Sometimes, she feels like a failure. But she is also at a place in her life where she loves her career, her children and, at long last, herself. Just days before her two year anniversary of joining CTV Morning Live, Keri Adams spoke candidly with Fresh Magazine about the influences that made her the woman she is today, and the mental fortitude required to make it all happen.
THE INFLUENCE OF INDEPENDENCE “I was born in Edmonton to parents from rural Alberta, as the younger of two girls. It was a pretty normal upbringing until my dad was killed in a plane crash when I was about five. That was a huge game changer for my family, especially for my mom, now alone with her two daughters, figuring out how to manage. She was a stay-at-home mom, which was common then, so she wasn’t prepared to launch into a full-time career. But she was tough. I remember listening to her working nights as a telemarketer to make ends meet, and thinking that I wanted to be independent, have a career and be able to take care of myself. There are so many curveballs that come at you in life, that can rock your world and change everything. It definitely influenced my desire to be self-sufficient.”
OF FARMERS’ FIELDS AND COMFORT ZONES “I got into broadcast journalism because there are so many amazing stories to be told, and I wanted to write creative stories based on truth. My first job was as a writer on a morning show. I eventually moved to Red Deer, where I stayed for two years. Those were my learning years. I put hundreds of kilometres on my Chevy Chevette, driving to farmers’ fields, hauling my heavy camera equipment through the mud, racing around, filing stories last minute on a typewriter. It was challenging! But I learned to push myself as you can do only when you’re out of your comfort zone. And I loved it.”
A HAPPY TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH CTV MORNING LIVE “It’s been two amazing years! We have a great team of writers and producers, and the director is fantastic. It’s a long show, which you’d think would be exhausting, but when I’m on the air and the camera is pointed at me, I am completely engaged in what I’m doing. It’s a three-and-a-half-hour, high-intensity adrenaline rush. When the show ends, that’s when I need a cup of coffee! MARCH/APRIL 2016

“The schedule is hectic: I get up at 3 am, get to work by 4 am, have an hour of hair and makeup, get dressed, then I have 45 minutes to write as much as I can for the show. When we begin, we probably have the first hour done, and the remainder is being built while we’re on the air. When I’m reading an intro to a story I haven’t seen, I’m learning along with the viewer. It’s fun because my reaction is spur-of-the-moment, but it can be a challenge! That’s where our team is so important. We’re all really engaged, creating a fantastic show that gives our viewers a solid package of news, weather, traffic and entertainment; everything they need to start their day. And it’s personal, too. We are being invited into people’s homes, taking part in their busy mornings while they feed their kids breakfast in their bathrobes. When people say they feel like they know me, it’s such a compliment.”
THE POINT OF AUTHENTICITY “My job allows me to be myself and show a little of my personality. It feels good. You get to a certain point in your life and career where you don’t want to pretend to be anything other than what you are. It’s taken me a long time to get there. The show, my age and my experiences have merged to a point where I have the career that fits me, so I can be the best that I can be. Either you like me or you don’t, but this is who I am. It’s not that I don’t care—I absolutely do—I just want to be my authentic self. If you put yourself out there, I don’t think you can lose. But it’s been a hard road! I probably wouldn’t have said these things ten years ago.”
FAVOURITE MOMENTS “Every day is something fun. We have great interviews as part of the show, sometimes with celebrities who join us via satellite or in the studio if we’re lucky. Kim Cattrall was on our show a while ago and I was thrilled to have a chance to sit down with her. Another interesting Canadian was Pamela Anderson. She came late to the interview and indicated that she was dealing with her teenage boys. It made me realize that despite her persona as a sexy, beautiful pin-up girl, she’s a mom and she is facing the same issues as the rest of us. I respect that.”
SINGLE, SUCCESSFUL AND SUPER MOM “I can’t fairly say that I balance it all; it’s something I struggle with every day. It’s been a really tough couple of years. I’ve separated from my spouse, which has its ongoing challenges. We’ve had to move to a new house. I’m trying to maintain some consistency for my kids, who are the most important human beings in my life. With all of that, plus my career, there’s just a lot to deal with. “Sometimes I think I need to start popping that herb that’s supposed to improve your memory, because mine is the worst! I have a billion things I need to do… and sometimes things fall through the cracks. As a mother, or even as a working woman, I feel like I’m failing if I can’t keep everything running smoothly. Mentally, it’s a huge struggle. Now that I’m on my own, I know that my plate has even more on it. My ex and I share responsibility for the children—and he’s been great—but I still feel some days like I’m barely making it all happen. It’s not all doom and gloom, but the plate gets full and sometimes things spill off the edges—and when that happens, I feel awful.”
SEEING THE LIGHT “I have started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If I can just get over this next hump, things will be a little bit more in control. I’ll be more in control. My girls are young and they need me so much right
now. I try to spend as much time with them as possible, and be as present as I can. I can still hug them and kiss them and they sit on my lap… but they’re going to be teenagers one day and that will no longer be cool! As much as they love me right now, there will be a point where they won’t want to show it. Will it be easier? Maybe in some ways it will. Every stage of life has different challenges.”
NO LIMITS “I turned 45 recently. It’s something I’m not embarrassed by; I don’t feel that my age limits me. I want to believe that women can have careers in this industry—or any other—that they can continue to grow as long as they want. It’s completely changed since I first got into this business. If I’m still good at what I do ten years from now, why can’t I continue to do it? I have a lot of years left in me and I want to be able to work in this business as long as I choose to. I don’t want anybody to tell me—regardless of what age I am—that I shouldn’t be doing it anymore.”
FALSE EYELASHES AND RUBBER BOOTS “I don’t feel pressure to change the way I look for my job, but I do want to look as good as I can. When I’m on the air I have amazing makeup, great big lashes, beautiful hair and wardrobe. At the end of the show, I leave the station with my hair and makeup intact… then go home, put on my sweatpants and rubber boots, and pick up my kids from school. The glamorous look doesn’t quite fit with my real life! Outside of work I don’t maintain that look. I dress nicely if I’m going out, but my life at home is very different from my appearance on TV. It’s comfortable and easy—and who has time to put on a full face of makeup?”
DABBLING IN SKINCARE “I’m a bit of a dabbler—I try different products and see what I like. In general, I just take my makeup off when I’m done the show, and make sure to thoroughly cleanse and moisturize my face each night. I use cleanser, toner, night cream and eye cream. I guess I have it all, but I’m not particular to any products or brands. Whenever I try something new I think: maybe this one will be the magic bullet!”
FITNESS THAT FITS “I was very fit when I was young, thanks to cheerleading and gymnastics. It’s so easy to be lean and fit when you’re young. As you get older, it takes much more to maintain that level of fitness. Finding something that fits my lifestyle, and finding time—those are my challenges. I’ve tried it all. A new thing I’m trying is hot yoga classes. They’re high intensity and you sweat a lot. I’m really enjoying them and I think I will continue going.”
FEEDING THE SOUL “On the odd occasion, I might get away for the weekend or for a spa day with my girlfriends, but it’s pretty rare. I think just going out for dinner with girlfriends is great ‘me time’ because it feeds your soul. Sitting on my couch at any point of the day is me time, because it means I’m actually relaxing with my feet up, which doesn’t happen very often. If I have ten minutes to go for a walk, that’s me time. You have to embrace those moments—they’re so brief and rare, but when they happen, they’re amazing.” _______________________________________________________ Liberty Craig is a freelance writer and editor living and working in Vancouver.

Beautiful Skin Requires Commitment, NOT A MIRACLE.
Why this Ernő László quote captures the essence of skincare. By TAMARA HUGHES
hether we are lining up a date or streaming last night’s episode of our favourite program, we are a generation that demands instant gratification. Wish all you want, there is still no magic potion that we can whip up for impressive skin in as little time as it takes to order a coffee. Naturally, skincare is a long-term investment. The effort you put in may not generate an instant difference, however if you adopt a few healthy and balanced lifestyle practices now, we assure the satisfaction will certainly come later on. Taking care of your skin involves more than merely slapping a couple of products on it. You know you should drink water, and I recommend committing to a minimum of 8 glasses a day to really hydrate and flush out toxins. It is additionally essential to add colourful veggies to your diet. They are loaded with antioxidants that assist skin in combating those damaging pollutants. According to skincare specialists, you must also put on an SPF on a daily basis not just in the summer season. Search for products with reparative antioxidants to increase excellent skin from the outside in.
While you may not see results as quick as you want, the earlier you adopt a wellrounded skincare routine that integrates healthy and balanced habits, the quicker it will pay off in the future and the longer the benefits will last. Recognizing that, delayed satisfaction doesn’t sound so bad now does it? There comes a time in every woman’s life when she has a very specific decision to make. That day may come when she is home in bed internet surfing, staring at herself in the mirror or she may be standing at the beauty counter after wandering into a store while window shopping. She is now face to face with a shelf loaded of white and shiny, pristine containers of tonics and creams, serums and oils, things that foam, peels and scrubs, all promising results. She will go home and ask herself and wonder if she should have just bought that cream because the one she has could possibly use an upgrade. It’s time for an intervention and it’s time we started talking, taking into consideration investment skincare and professional spa treatments. As soon as you discover that one
or two incredibly special things that work for your skin, it may be time to start splurging on yourself. People will certainly cringe if I totalled my skin expenditures for the year. Given that I will only have one skin for the remainder of my life, however long or short that may be, I want to take care of it as best as I possibly can. This consists of investing in quality products and professional spa treatments that are actually beneficial to one’s skin. It’s amazing just how much people will spend on materialistic items that can easily be replaced. When it boils down to their skin and their health, hands are short and pockets are deep. Each to their own, they have probably worked hard for their money, and so have I! I choose to invest my hard earned money on my skin. Excellent skin requires commitment and dedication, not a miracle. Every morning and evening, you should devote some time to take care of your skin. 10 minutes is all you need. You spend more time doing things that you probably won’t remember, if you think about it.

ith skyrocketing real estate prices and a somewhat fickle customer base, few Vancouver restaurants can boast a marriage of quality, affordability and longevity. One restaurant that has endured and thrived is Lombardo’s Pizzeria and Ristorante, Commercial Drive’s original wood oven pizzeria. Set to celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer, Lombardo’s is still serving its award-winning Napolateanastyle thin-crust pizza and traditional Italian pasta dishes, just like mamma used to make. Except here, mamma has a lot of help from her three daughters. “I don’t know of many other restaurants in Vancouver that keep things all in the family quite like we do,” says owner Patti Lombardo. “I’m just happy that my girls not only want to continue to spend so much time at the restaurant, but also with me and with each other.” On the cusp of this milestone, Lombardo’s remains a restaurant for families, run by a family of tight-knit women who have a passion for food, community and kin. The eldest daughter Elizabeth (31) is the manager, 20-year-old Sonia helps with frontof-house, bartending and marketing, while 27-year-old Giulia is the head chef, whipping up Italian specialties since the age of five. “Our secret sauce here really is family. We love what we do, we love that we get a chance to do this as a unit, and we know this comes across through the food we prepare and the ambiance we create,” says matriarch and restaurant owner Patti Lombardo.
“The very first day, I was working out front, as a waitress, and I served soup with my thumbs in it. That’s how inexperienced I was! The guy I served still comes in and reminds me of it,” says Lombardo. Much larger struggles were to follow, including Lombardo’s well-publicized divorce that saw her ex-husband open his own competing pizzeria just down the street. At that point, Lombardo had aspirations of going back to school, but family responsibilities kept her tied to the business. “Because I had the kids, I had a big financial burden right off the bat. Doing something else then wasn’t really an option. I worked seven days a week, for years. It wasn’t until Elizabeth got her driver’s license and could drive herself home after a waitressing shift that I got my first night off.” Lombardo’s daughters have always gravitated to the restaurant, first as a second home, then as an after school job, and today, as a career. When the lease was coming up about 8 years ago, it was family meeting time and all four women committed to working together to maintain and grow the business. “It’s a good business to be in. We like it and we’re good at it. We make a good team,” says daughter Elizabeth. The women credit some of their success to the familial atmosphere, but Lombardo is
quick to add that it is the traditional recipes and quality of food that keeps customers returning, decade after decade. “We probably gave them their first good pizza in Canada, because no one was making that kind of pizza in the 80s and 90s. We’re also about consistency. They come back after 20 years and the Number 7 pizza still tastes like the Number 7 pizza.” While some of the menu items have remained the same, the way business is done has definitely changed. Gone are the days when an ad placed in the local newspaper was all it took to draw customers. And with the number of quality pizzerias mushrooming in the city, competition is decidedly fierce. “We have had to evolve, definitely. That’s why it was so important when we decided the girls are going to stay because I needed a new guard,” says Lombardo. “It was time for some fresh energy.” The evolution has included some creative marketing tactics and a focus on social media to reach new audiences who may be unfamiliar with this gem, tucked away on the corner of 1st and Commercial Drive. It may not be the ideal location, lacking a storefront that looks out onto the street, but one that does hold a clear advantage: a wood burning pizza oven, grandfathered in before the city increased regulations on wood-burning appliances. “Gas ovens do make good pizzas, but wood is still the best,” says Lombardo. Going forward, Lombardo remains tightlipped about any plans for expansion, although she is clearly looking forward to the day when she can step away completely, leaving the family business to her daughters. And as for advice to those looking to get into the restaurant business, “always have a plan B,” says Lombardo with a laugh. ___________________________________ Located at 1st and Commercial Drive, Lombardo’s is open 7 days a week. For more information, please contact 604-251-2240 or go to Lombardos.ca.
The restaurant opened in the summer of 1986, a busy time in the city with the increase in tourism due to Expo ’86. At that time, Lombardo says owning a restaurant was not something she aspired to, let alone had any experience in.

isha Kharé, with her husband Sharad, are Kharé Communications, a platform through which they interview and facilitate dialogue between a long list of truly influential people. People like, the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra and Meryl Streep, just to name a few. People who have contributed positively to the betterment of humanity and the world at large. Nisha strongly believes in working with good people who have done good things in the world. Fresh Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Nisha, who recently spoke at the UN for Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, to discuss love, life and the strength of powerful partnerships.
ON HER ACHIEVEMENTS... Our children are our everything, our greatest achievement. They are our legacy. We should do good because in turn, they will continue our work by doing things that go beyond our imaginations and leave their own mark on the world—helping people and changing things. Another achievement I am particularly proud of was speaking at the UN. It blew my mind because of the caliber of people that we were with. These are women doing the most inspiring things in the world, and I was on the same stage as them. I am so thankful to have shared in that moment with them. And, the fact that my husband and I were there doing it together was amazing. MARCH/APRIL 2016
ON WORKING WITH HER POWERFUL PARTNER... Sharad and I adore each other. We are interested in each other. We love spending time together. We have different skills, so when we collaborate it creates something really beautiful. What it really comes down to is that we really want to see each other be successful, because his success is mine, and mine is his. The reason we’re creating a business together is because it’s good for the family. It has been a successful equation, although at times it hasn’t been easy!
ON HER CHALLENGES... Challenges add to people’s depth. They have the power to make us more empathetic, yet more guarded; more vulnerable, yet more resilient. There are a lot of things that I have gone through, and sometimes it takes a toll and I have to remind myself to put myself first in order to fill up so that I can support and be present for other people. At home, my husband and I have to be mindful to continue to communicate with each other and keep our dialogue going. Because if we stay open and honest and respectful in our partnership, I think we can achieve anything. Whatever challenges have been thrown at us, we have made it through because we have each other.
ON HER MOTIVATIONS... Helping and supporting people motivates me. If I can help someone in some way that leads to them being happier, then that is a worthwhile achievement, that is success. That is what powerful partnerships are about; elevating each other, which in turn radiates outwards resulting in the elevation of everyone. We’re in this world together. Let’s make it a good place. Let’s make it a great place! It takes work, because we’re humans and we’re not perfect. But we have to try!
ON THE FUTURE... I will be documenting powerful partners and what makes them successful. Let’s learn from these powerful partnerships. I want to learn from them. I will start by documenting locally and then internationally. I’m excited about the potential for illuminating and learning from people that are already out there living powerful partnerships. Our future is documenting the most inspirational people in the world, sharing their stories and helping them shine in their authenticity to elevate our world! ROCK THIS SPRING’S TOP TRENDS PRODUCED & STYLED BY CRYSTAL CARSON PHOTOGRAPHED BY AARON AUBREY HAIR & MAKEUP ARTIST: JEN TIOSECO USING CHARLOTTE TILBURY STYLIST ASSISTANT: CHELSEA LANGENSTAM LOCATION: COURTESY OF NICK NEACSU & HILLSIDE DEVELOPMENTS
TREND
Wide-Leg Pants
THE TREND: One of my favorite trends
to come out of the spring collections this year is the wide-leg trouser. This style is in tune with the '70s trend headlining for Spring 2016.
HOW TO WEAR: Reach for a high-
waisted style. Opt for a cropped style for a night out. Pair fluid ankle-length trousers with a pair of strappy heels or sandals.
THE PERKS: This cut will show off your shape by elongating your legs and accentuating your waist.

Fiesta Red + Abstract Floral Prints

FIESTA RED THE TREND: The high energy Fiesta Red is a harbinger of excitement. A vivid, fiery, yellow-based red, the Fiesta provides a stark contrast to the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette. HOW TO WEAR: Wear it in prints, accessories, and switch up the little black dress to red this spring.
THE PERKS: When you wear this colour,
all eyes will be on you. Who doesn’t want to be the lady in red? JACKET BY BROGDEN (BLUBIRD) / DRESS BY NICHOLAS (BLUBIRD) / CLUTCH BY MINE & YOURS (MINE & YOURS) / PLATFORM HEELS BY SAINT LAURENT (NORDSTROM)
ABSTRACT FLORALS THE TREND: Cue The Devil Wears Prada quote: “Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking.” New interpretations of floral prints are a little more abstract than their traditional predecessors. Forget polite and pretty—these blossoms have been exaggerated, stretched, and distorted. HOW TO WEAR: Update your look with statement floral accessories, like oversized floral patchwork handbags, statement earrings, and print shoes. THE PERKS: Easily make a fashion
statement. The all-over print keeps eyes moving away from problem spots of wearer’s body. For the less adventurous, try floral patterns on a black background, with the colours muted and flattering against the tanned body.
ROBE JACKET BY MARNI (HOLT RENFREW) / SLIP DRESS BY MINE & YOURS (MINE & YOURS) / BAG BY SAINT LAURANT (MINE & YOURS) / SHOES BY L.A.M.B. (MINE & YOURS) / RING BY NORDSTROM (NORDSTROM)

Pajama Daywear
THE TREND: Designers this season have put a modern twist on a nighttime classic with chic ready-to-wear pajamas to take you from day to night. HOW TO WEAR: Instead of a jacket, opt for a kimono-style robe. Choose a pair of shoes that looks decidedly not like slippers when rocking a pajama set on the street. Try to avoid looking completely like you did when you rolled out of bed. THE PERKS: Pajama party, anyone? This laid-back look wins for over-the-top comfort with lightweight fabrics keeping you cool in the summer heat. VCC Salon and Spa Gives Students and Clients the Keys to a Dynamic City Two years after the beauty school’s high-end update, the film and fashion world is calling.
I
n 2013, the VCC Salon and Spa—an institution devoted to teaching future beauty professionals their craft—got its own makeover. The campus was renovated into a truly high-end environment, as sleek and tranquil as any downtown salon or spa. At the same time, the training program got a business unit that freed up its instructors to focus on teaching and pursuing training in the latest hair and spa techniques. It was a major overhaul for VCC’s longrunning hair design and skin and body therapy certificate programs. Was the investment worth it? Geeta Charach, the Business Manager who came to the VCC Salon and Spa along with the high-end renovations, believes the results speak for themselves. “We keep increasing number of classes. Our enrollment is increasing. Clients want to be in our state-ofthe-art facilities. We’re typically fully booked and have a daily wait list.” That’s something that should pique the interest of prospective students. Learning the ins and outs of the beauty trade in a fully booked salon and spa can make a world of difference. For example, hair design students at VCC Salon and Spa learn by working with people, not mannequins. Charach explains the difference: “Mannequins sit on a stand and don’t move or talk. They don’t have hair that’s been coloured or permed many times. They don’t bring their kids. Our students get a dynamic experience of working with real people.”
34 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca
Indeed, the dynamism of the VCC Salon and Spa experience extends far beyond mannequins. A quick survey of the school’s activities reveals an institution that is deeply integrated with the vibrant city it calls home. Top beauty brands regularly rent the school’s facilities for demonstrations or to prep for hair shows. Professionals use the space to prep for photo shoots. The film industry is beginning to knock on VCC’s doors. VCC students have now spent five seasons providing hair services in the glamorous whirlwind that is Vancouver Fashion Week. “Our students get opportunities that make them more excited and motivated,” says Charach. “And when they do their practicums, chances are they are going to get hired. In fact, our students’ rate for employment is 89%.” Clients of the salon and spa are equally excited by what they experience. “People come to us because they get a genuine highend salon spa experience with top-shelf beauty brands like Eminence, Dermalogica, Joico, and Goldwell for a reasonable price. I mean…$11 for a haircut? Facials starting at $32.50? That’s amazing!” If you’re a future beauty professional looking for a dynamic training experience, or if you’re on the hunt for top-shelf yet affordable services, visit www.VCC.ca/services/eatshop--more/vcc-salon--spa. Accomplish Your Goals This Year By DR. KELVIN P. MAH
always feel a sense of renewal during the spring season. It’s a reminder for me to set new goals and look for new opportunities—both in my own life and for Smile City Square Dental. Our practice is constantly seeking to improve our facility and services to better serve you—our loyal patients. In every aspect, our patients are the fundamental focus of our practice, and drive all of our intents and actions. I spent a lot of time in the past few months reflecting on the amazing patients I was fortunate enough to treat in 2015, and how they constantly motivate my team and I to excel in our practice of dentistry. With that in mind, I find that now is the optimal time to take those reflections, and
36 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca
turn them into new goals. Then take those goals, and turn them into results. Although it can be difficult to stay on track, it’s important to keep your end goal in mind every step of the way.
MAKE SURE YOUR GOALS ARE ATTAINABLE AND ACTIONABLE It’s very likely that your goals and mine overlap. Let me guess—in 2016, you’re aiming to live a healthier lifestyle and pursue new things that make you happy. You may have been thinking about making a significant change in your life for a while, but have yet to take action.
MARCH/APRIL 2016
During this busy time of year, it’s crucial to set time aside for yourself. Whether it is going for a morning run, trying out a new cooking class, or treating yourself to a mini vacation, follow through with your plans and you won’t regret it! What may help is writing down some attainable short-term and long-term goals, which you can check off your list as you reach each milestone. As well, I find it very helpful to surround yourself with people who can help you move towards your new goals—whether it’s living healthier, happier, or anything else.
If you fit into this category, it’s not difficult to see how your smile, or lack there of, may have prevented you from reaching your full potential. We are here to help. We’ve helped many, many people obtain the smiles of their dreams and we can help you. That is why my patients have described the experience of receiving a smile transformation as a life-changing opportunity, of which the results and advantages will stick with you for a lifetime.
Those are actually my goals for the year as well—to help you renew your overall health with better oral care, and to assist in making your smile dreams come true. If you’ve been thinking about achieving an enhanced smile—what are you waiting for? There’s no better time than now to take action. Smile City Square Dental can help you reach your goal for a better smile with a smile transformation. A smile transformation can be a combination of treatments that make your teeth straighter, whiter, have a better gum-to-teeth ratio, or make them fit more comfortably in your mouth. Basically, the possibilities are endless when it comes to a better smile.
THE FIRST STEP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT
SO YOU KNOW WHAT GOALS YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH… WHAT NOW? It’s time to get started! Why choose to complete your smile transformation with me at Smile City Square Dental? What we love about our practice is that we are collaborative, we listen to your unique needs, and we genuinely care about delivering the best results for you. When it comes to taking a significant step towards your goals, such as choosing to enhance your smile, we understand how important it is to have all your needs heard and understood. I make it my intension to always listen to your story and learn about you as a person before designing a plan of action for your smile. This way, I can be sure that you will be more than happy with the outcome of your procedure(s). I see each smile transformation as an opportunity to fulfill a dental dream, and happy patients are what motivate me each and every day to continue my passion of dentistry.
My dental practice is a huge part of my life, and is in the forefront of my thoughts at all times. I’m always thinking—what can I do to make the practice better and impact more lives? I’ve made it one of my goals this year to continue making a difference in the dental industry by breaking the barriers between dentist and patient. No matter your reason for stepping into our practice, I assure you that I will always make your needs my priority, by actively listening to your story and creating custom dental plans that work for you. You’ll notice right away when you come for your visit that my entire team is dedicated to being transparent with our patients and making your experience as comfortable as possible. If an enhanced smile has been on your mind recently, I invite you to take actionable steps towards your goal. The first step is to schedule a consultation at our practice and to learn about the options available to you. Take the new season as an opportunity to finally make your dreams a reality, and to make a change for the better in your health and happiness!
As much of an opportunity as a smile transformation is for me, it’s much more of an opportunity for you to achieve an enhanced smile and overall better health this year. Smile transformations at Smile City Square Dental result in both aesthetic and functional benefits. The aesthetic benefits that come from crowns, veneers, whitening and gum contouring will be more apparent and quickly noticed by others. In addition to a smile that looks better, a smile transformation will also make your teeth more functional. A transformed smile can make chewing easier, prevent grinding, and overall increase your comfort. You’ll feel like a brand new person with a boost of confidence and even more reasons to smile! Trust me, people will notice a major difference and more importantly you will feel it too. After hearing the hundreds of personal stories of my patients over the years, I’ve come to realize what causes the greatest angst amongst those who are unhappy with their smiles: the inability of people to freely express themselves through their smiles. Those of us who are fortunate enough to smile when we feel joy, take our smiles for granted. There are others who have lived their lives being very self-conscious about the appearance of their smiles and as a result, have rarely expressed their joy freely. This has led to a lack of confidence in social situations.
Dr. Kelvin P. Mah believes in helping people—not merely treating problems—and takes a dedicated interest in the health and wellness of each individual patient. His award-winning Smile City Square Dental practice reflects a zen-like atmosphere of warmth and relaxation. He is also a graduate of UBC’s prestigious Dental School and is an instructor with the Frontier Institute. Power Introduction I N

ave you ever attended a networking event, mixer, or meetup, and it’s time to deliver an elevator speech, but you’re stuck with what to say or how to say it? You see others delivering a professional, polished ‘elevator pitch,’ and you wonder how they do it. At Connect Now, each business owner gets an opportunity to deliver a 30-second presentation of their business, and we call it our Connect Now Power Intro. When strategically composed, you can make your 30 seconds very effective, and most importantly, you’ll expand your reach and attract your ideal client. First impressions do matter, so here are some tips for crafting your Power Intro.
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE Make sure you know the needs, wants, and desires of those listening to your Power Intro. Survey your audience ahead of time to see what they need, and what kind of product or program they want from you to make their life and business better. Identify your ideal client, and imagine you are talking directly to that person.
BE CLEAR & CONCISE I’ve seen some people deliver a more compelling presentation in 30 seconds, than others who go on and on for 3 minutes and monopolize everyone’s time. We’ve all seen that happen. So, save yourself time, attract more people to your business, and get more results with a well-crafted intro. You’ll actually get better results saying less and being precise. Less is more.
STICK TO ONE THING Do not mention two businesses or your message won’t stand out. It’s not about telling
everything about your business, it’s about compelling people to connect with you further, and developing long-term business relationships. You may have several things that you offer and do, but when you deliver one distinctive element of what you do, with power and confidence, you will differentiate yourself and successfully express your true value.
FOCUS ON RESULTS The results section of your statement is the most important. Your purpose and passion are revealed in the results you produce for others. Express the impactful outcomes your clients experience. Believe it or not, your presentation is not about you, your product, or program, it should be about the customers and their most urgent needs, how you will solve their problems, and improve their lives.
TELL A STORY If you can express your concise, focused, results in the form of a story, then you will be the most memorable person in the room.
C R E A T E
I T
Stories make people feel your message, not just understand it. Stories reach people’s emotions, not just their intellect. Storytelling produces trust, credibility, and establishes you as an expert. It doesn’t have to be a long story— remember you only have 30 seconds—but when you make it compelling, it will be long lasting in the minds of your audience. If people feel your message they will care and listen, and when they care and listen they will act.
CALL TO ACTION Tell people what to do next with a strong call to action, for example, how to contact you, where to connect with you online, how to download a complimentary copy of your book, or how they can learn more. Be creative. Make it easy for people to connect with you. Don’t create unnecessary barriers. Put up a landing page just for this purpose to make the process as simple as possible for your visitors and potential clients. Be sure to offer your audience an opt-in gift that they want, when they want it. It all starts and ends with your audience.
N O W
Below is a quick and simple exercise to help you clarify your presentation and get started with composing your Power Intro. It’s a proven format and structure that works towards getting better results and building deeper connections. Here’s how it works:
YOUR POWER INTRO I help (who) ______________, to (what do you help them to do) ______________, so they can (what is the result?) ______________. Your call to action (What do you want people to do next? E.g. Visit your website or landing page, register for your event, follow you on social media, ask more questions.) ______________.

WNORTH CONFERENCE PROFILE
Heather Odendaal
H
eather Odendaal is meeting one of her committee members for the WNORTH Conference at a cafe in her home of Whistler, BC. She is the epitome of “leaning in”—a laptop is fired up on the table in front of her, a steaming latte is at hand and her three-monthold son Luke is fast asleep in the stroller tucked behind her chair.
To say Heather has moxie, is an understatement. But she isn’t alone. Heather has surrounded herself with an organizing committee made up of twelve individuals (including her husband), each working in their own sphere of expertise on a pro bono basis. The WNORTH Board of Advisors also provide their guidance and mentorship towards the broad themes and direction of WNORTH. Heather built this team to support her as she took on the additional role of motherhood, and the result is a collaborative effort mirroring the kind of network Heather hopes to build on a global scale for women as they ascend into leadership roles. WNORTH is the first of its kind- an experiential, destination conference for women in business on a leadership track. The material delivered during this conference will not only be impactful, it will be outcome-based. Each individual will be held to task by their fellow attendees through the creation of a community of women who are the next generation of senior leaders. Tickets for WNORTH are now available. The Balance Pass is $699 and includes access to two days of WNORTH Conference programming in Whistler as well as an opening wine reception. WNORTH Conference is proud to partner with PwC, McQuarrie Hunter LLP, Business Events Canada, Nita Lake Lodge, Fresh Magazine, and is produced by Heather’s company, Bluebird Strategy. Registration is now available at WNorthConference.com/register
WNORTH Conference is Heather’s other baby, her first child if you will. After identifying a gap leadership training supporting women, she decided to create her own forum. Now in its second year, WNORTH Conference is a platform bringing together today’s top women leaders and the next generation of women rising to leadership positions in corporate, public and entrepreneurial sectors. This boutique destination conference gives women the opportunity to have real conversations critical to achieving real success. A multidisciplinary approach to the delivery of conference content allows participants to dive into the conference’s main pillars of focus: Accelerate Growth, Balance Life, Inspire Change and Connections that Matter. Inspirational talks, actionable workshops and intimate networking opportunities, move conversations outside of the normal boundaries of the typical conference event. WNORTH is the first of its kind- an experiential, destination conference for women in business on a leadership track. The material delivered at the conference is not only impactful, it is outcome-based. Each individual will be held to task by their fellow attendees through the creation of a community of women who are the next generation of senior leaders. This year, WNORTH Conference will host 200 business leaders in the unique resort setting of Nita Lake Lodge from April 20–22, 2016.

I
t can be daunting to stare at a lens since it can seem like an emotionless eyeball, unblinking, waiting for you. Perhaps it conjures an image that you fear—an ambivalent audience. After all, how can we perform without connection? I think this fear and the lack of connection is what can trip people up when doing video. As with everything else, we need to turn fear to love. The camera, and the waiting audience, loves you. The lens is your most patient ally—it will wait until you get it right.
CONNECTION REMINDER LIST 1. Bring out the best you by imagining or having your ideal person there to film with.
How to NOT Be Afraid of the Camera By ADERA ANGELUCCI

2. Smile—it will get you out of your head and into your heart. Guaranteed. 3. If you muck up, laugh at yourself! You are trying and no one gets it right the first time. 4. Find your best angle and light yourself up! We’re there to see you, not your backdrop. 5. Your phone shoots in HD! You do not need any fancy equipment, so relax. Make sure to get a tripod so you’re not hand-holding. Shaky video is distracting! 6. You are perfectly imperfect and your story or message deserves to be heard! (I want to hear it!)

Julie and her team at Let’s Face It Beauty help women look their best with makeup and hair services for weddings, special events, head shots, and photo shoots.

She especially loves these words of wisdom from Amoruso: “Your challenge as a GIRLBOSS is to dive headfirst into things without being too attached to the results. When your goal is to gain experience, perspective, and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility. Failure is your invention.” Check out Allyson at Facebook. com/Ally.Matos.Allyfotografy

Carla’s path to Army of Sass began when she produced her first burlesque-inspired performance for a local Vancouver fundraiser that ended up raising nearly $20,000. From that point onward, Carla understood the power of dance and how transformative, inspirational, and challenging it could be. She threw herself into Heels Dancing. As time went on, Catherwood wanted to perform less and teach more, so she started to teach the heels style she was developing. Army of Sass was born. As of the beginning of 2016, AOS has over 500 registered students, with over 140 in Toronto where Carla now resides, and the rest at the remaining 12 licensee locations across Canada. Check out ArmyOfSass.com/ locations to see if there’s an Army of Sass location near you.

GRACE LANUZA & CINDY TRAN In early 2015, entrepreneurs Cindy Tran and Grace Lanuza wanted a night where they could sip some drinks, shop from the local businesses they love, and share the experience with their network. A unique pop-up concept, Sip & Shop YVR is an ultra-inclusive retail platform that stands for the “3 Cs”: collaboration, community, and commerce. It’s a disruptive concept that allows business owners to “test drive” their products in a cost-effective way. Cindy’s thriving business Sweet Petite Confectioner was one of the original featured brands at Sip & Shop YVR. Grace drew from her 14+ years of experiential marketing to help businesses who were taking part make their brands come to life at the event. Sip & Shop YVR’s goal is to scale globally, empowering women entrepreneurs along the way. Want to join the ride? These ladies and their heels can be found @sipshopyvr
