Our minds are incredible—exquisite, really. The creative capacity combined with the analytical ability and you’ve got one of the most sophisticated machines in the universe. But the mind is only as powerful as the fuel we empower it with. When we embrace that power and use our thought forms to affirm the whispers of love, compassion, forgiveness, understanding, joy, and peace, we affect our lives and our world in marvelous ways.

heryl Hickey may have a glamourous occupation. She may rub shoulders with Hollywood’s elite and attend all those parties you read about in magazines— or hear about on Entertainment Tonight Canada. But ET Canada’s gorgeous, funny host is really a down-to-earth small town girl from Owen Sound, Ontario, who worked her way through the media ranks to attain her coveted position. Like many of us, she is balancing career and kids, working hard on that post-baby body, and now settling nicely into age forty. What makes Hickey special is not (only) her enviable wardrobe and star-studded livelihood; it’s her overriding sense of gratitude. She feels extremely fortunate to have a career she truly loves. She cherishes the moments and challenges of parenting. And she is grateful for each day of this precious life. Cheryl Hickey spoke with Fresh Magazine about parenting her beautiful three- and six-year-old children, working in the limelight, and making it all happen as best as she knows how.

Work it, Mommy I went back to work six months after having both my babies, doing nothing but hosting. I was in a complete haze: sleep-deprived, hormones all over the place. Basically, they put clothes on me, propped me up and made sure I wasn’t leaking! It’s really hard coming back early. Lots of women do it, but it’s tough. My schedule now goes to three o’clock, so I can pick the kids up from school and daycare, then start all the mommy duties: homework, playtime, making dinner, bath time. When I’m working on an interview or on the road, my husband will take over. Like most parents, we put our kids first and figure it out between us. I’ve been very lucky that Shaw (now Corus) has been so family-friendly. Kids aren’t puppies; there is a short period of time in which your kids intensely need you. Family matters! It shapes our society. I’m proud to say our company values that.

All Things to All People You do your best to make everybody feel like they have 100 percent of your attention, but there are days when you can’t do it all. I set boundaries for myself, especially around my kids. When I’m home, the phone goes away—though if work calls, I answer. Do balls get dropped? Absolutely. Do I get overwhelmed? Of course. I also have some projects outside of work and kids, and I don’t get started on those until 10 o’clock at night! If I didn’t love what I do so much, I think it would be a problem for me. Being a parent has been hard since the beginning of time. Parenting’s tough, and there are times when you suck at it! You can only do your best, and if your kids think you’re perfect all the time, it sets unrealistic expectations of what life really is. Sometimes we’re grumpy, and that’s okay. But I realize how quickly this is going by, and how precious life is. I’m sucking up every moment with them that I can.

Love What You Do I feel like I’ve taken my hobby and made it my life’s work. I love talking to people and I get paid to do so. That’s an awesome thing! I’ve been at Global since 1999 and with ET Canada since it began. I genuinely enjoy coming to work every day. The team is fantastic. I always say (jokingly) that we’re a dysfunctional group of funny people. I wish more people got to meet them because they’re really quirky, cool individuals. And I’ve travelled the world on the back of this show. I’ve gone to places that a girl from Owen Sound would never get to go to. You name it; we’ve been there. It’s been an amazing experience.

Star Power and Butterflies I think being nervous means you care. It’s a combination of nervous and excited. If I stop getting a little something in my stomach, it might signal that I’m not as invested as I should be. Meeting Oprah was a very big deal. She is such an icon, such an amazing woman who has done so much for television. George Clooney and Brad Pitt—they’re also a big deal! Celine Dion, Tom Cruise, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman… there are a lot of great people whom I’ve been lucky to meet.

Baby Body On Display When I was pregnant and growing, I was super proud. I was in awe of what was going on with my body. And I gained 80 pounds with both kids. We made (probably inappropriate) jokes and had a lot of fun with it. When I came back to work, there were times in the change room when I was hot and sweaty and close to tears because nothing fit. I’d think, “How can I go out there?” Our wardrobe stylist said to me, “Listen, babe. Dresses come in other sizes. Just rock what you’ve got.” And I thought, “Yeah. My body just did something amazing.” Those babies did wreak some havoc on my body—much more than I ever thought they would. Some days I felt frustrated, but I got really lovely emails from women. I’ve always felt like people see me as the girl next door, someone they know, which made going through that in front of everyone less difficult. My bosses were really supportive, too. There was never any pressure for me to get back to my former size—any weight that I have lost has been solely on my own. And quite frankly, the last ten pounds have been hard to get off—I’m still working on it.

The Last Ten Pounds I’m getting some help because I realized what I was doing wasn’t working. I’d feel guilty about leaving the kids to go work out in the morning, and I didn’t have time at lunch. So I hired a personal trainer two months ago. I go at five am three days a week, before anyone’s awake. When I get back, I can get my kids up and make them breakfast. It’s working for me. Perspective Checks I’ve had some perspective checks along the way. My mom has MS, and it’s robbed her of a few key moments in our lives. I’ve had a couple of scares in my life, too. I watch my mom and I know I have to live this life to the fullest. I love what I do and all the fun, fancy parts of it. I appreciate the people around me, the relationships. I’m trying to savour every bit of it; trying not to sweat the small stuff. There are days when I slip up, but that’s my focus.

Lotions & Potions I love a good laser. I do all kinds of exfoliations, retinols, ultrasound to work the collagen. I wear a significant amount of makeup because the studio lights are so intense that without it, you just disappear. I have a great makeup artist who does a beautiful job, but you have to take care of your skin underneath. I wash my makeup off as soon as I get home, and follow up with vitamin C cream—which is just the best. I have all sorts of lotions and potions.

A Place for Charity This summer there are a ton of charity events in Toronto. One that I’m really excited about is the Butterfly Ball, which helps support children who have been abused. I’m very passionate about helping them raise funds and awareness. Sick Kids also has an enormous place in my heart and I’ll help them with whatever they ask for. I work with them as much and as often as I can, because I think they’re such angels. Everybody who works in that entire building makes it an unbelievable place. I’m also working with a health expert who is helping me track what I eat. She doesn’t tell me what not to eat; she just helps me be more mindful, make sure I drink enough water, and do a better job of balancing things throughout the day. For my body type, eating is 80 percent of getting to where I need to go. There are still days when I’ll have a chocolate chip cookie, and it tastes really good, and I’m not sorry about that. But I’ve cleaned up my diet: whole foods, fruit, vegetables, meat, nothing processed.

Going for it at Forty I’m lucky to be here. So many people are sick or have crazy things going on in their lives. I’m very grateful to have another year in which (knock on wood) I’m doing well and my family is great. I’ve never been a person who gets funky about numbers. I know that I’m in an industry where there are certain perceptions, but I take care of my skin, I exercise, I’m healthy, and I feel pretty young inside. To me, forty is a great thing: you know what you don’t want, and you’re definite about what you do want. So you can go for it.

Gearing Up For TIFF The Toronto Film Festival is coming up in September. It’s movies and TV, interviews and fashion: all the fun stuff! It’s like my industry’s Super Bowl. All the stars come into town and the city has this great energy. There are so many parties to go to… our stylists are out looking for the best dresses… we’re watching a dozen movies or more. It’s such an exciting time, such a great thing for movie goers and for the film institutions.

An Exciting Future I’m very excited about the show and what we have planned. I’m excited about some business opportunities—projects I’m working on. And I’m so excited to watch my kids grow! They’re turning into the most amazing people, and my husband and I are having such a good time with them. It’s goofy times over at our house! More Reasons to

hat does it mean to truly find yourself? Does it mean going on a 94-day hike like Reese Witherspoon did in the movie Wild? Or travelling the world on a quest for reinvention like Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love? While these may be extreme examples of self discovery, many people have a desire to truly find and understand themselves, but aren’t aware that that goal can be accomplished by much more realistic means.

To me, to find yourself means to feel connected with your mind, body, and spirit. It means feeling confident about who you are on the inside and on the outside. In today’s society, it can be difficult to discover your true self when we are clouded by constant messages telling us who we should be. One of my personal goals in life is to help others find themselves or reinvent themselves through their smile. It can be as simple as that. Your smile isn’t just a set of teeth inside your mouth— it’s a reflection of who you are and it can tell other people a lot about how you perceive yourself. Anyone can see there is usually a major difference between someone who is insecure about the appearance of their smile, and someone whose smile glows with radiance because they have never been more confident about themselves.

t Smile City Square Dental, my team and I do our tiny part in trying to make the world a better place by helping people transform their smiles. A

vibrant smile doesn’t just change how you may see yourself. It also has an influence on how the people in your life see you, both in personal and professional settings. People who are proud of their teeth aren’t afraid to smile and laugh at every moment they can, coming off as more cheerful, confident, and self-actualized. Maybe these are qualities that are already inside of you, but have yet to be revealed. A patient of mine, Kirk, has a slightly different story. Kirk was always handsome, successful, and athletic, but he felt that something was still holding him back from achieving his full potential. He was confident about almost every aspect of his life, with the exception of his smile. Now, don’t get me wrong, his smile wasn’t bad! My job is not about repairing teeth that need fixing, no. To me, dentistry is about taking smiles—and lives—to the next level, and treating the hearts and minds of my valued patients. That’s exactly what I did for Kirk when we completed a one-visit mini smile makeover consisting of a simple bonding and sculpting treatment. It wasn’t long before professional and personal opportunities came knocking at Kirk’s door. His colleagues treated him with a new respect, and it’s not an exaggeration to say that his popularity with the opposite sex skyrocketed. Getting to know the powerhouses of PLAY Management The founders of Vancouver’s premiere entertainment agency talk Hollywood, startup challenges, and the fine art of using a breast pump at work By KRISTeN Van VLOTEN

T

he perks of working in a mainly female environment, according to PLAY Management founding partners Trina Allen-Abt, Vickie Petronio-King, and Lena Lees-Heidt, are easy to list. They include: support, encouragement, “the occasional wine o’clock Friday”, and the flexibility to bring your kids to work when necessary. And of course, selfexpression is encouraged. “We had a receptionist years ago with a bizarre birthday tradition,” says PetrionoKing. “We sang her happy birthday, she blew out the candles, and we handed her a knife to cut the cake. When she started cutting it, she screamed at the top of her lungs. She said in

her family it was good luck to scream when cutting a birthday cake. That has become a PLAY tradition now; when you cut your cake here, you must scream for luck. I’d say it’s worked so far...” Of course, the women of PLAY Management, Vancouver’s on-fire talent agency, have been more than lucky. Today, their team is six managers strong, with a client roster that includes Jacob Tremblay, the stunningly talented child star of the Oscar-nominated Room. Their actors appear in Hollywood blockbusters like Elysium and hit television series like Silicon Valley and Arrow.

Life at PLAY Management is good. And ten years ago, when the three founders left a different agency to start something of their own, it was also good—but it was tough. Lees-Heidt, Petronio-King, and Allen-Abt braved the challenges any founders face. They struggled to find office space in realestate-challenged Vancouver, eventually settling in Railtown. They endured the typical startup’s grueling schedule. But they also encountered challenges specific to being women in a startup. For example, none of them took a typical maternity leave when their babies were born in the earlier days of the company. JULY/AUGUST 2016


“There’s a feeling of satisfaction when you know in your gut a client should or shouldn’t take a job, and you’re able to help them navigate that.” “I went back to work fourteen weeks after my first, and less than two weeks after with my second,” says Petriono-King. “I, like a lot of working women I know, put pressure on myself to not only continue giving clients the level of attention they are used to, but I almost felt the need to go above and beyond, just to prove to them I could handle it all.” But if the working mom struggle was (and occasionally is) painfully real, the partners see their gender as a definite advantage in their industry. They believe women make ideal managers. They’re high EQ warriors, equipped with an array of skills for tackling any number of challenges, from offering counsel to navigating tricky negotiations. “Being female entrepreneurs also provides us with some clear insight as to what young women who work for us might be looking for,” adds Allen-Abt. “It’s not only job stability, but flexibility, extra support during mat leave, or being able to work while using a breast JULY/AUGUST 2016

pump—hands free of course,” she quips, “and with a cover. We don’t need to scare clients.” PLAY Management’s founders know that launching a career in entertainment is a major leap of faith. And they care. Part of their mission is to help clients secure work that will lead to long-term success, not just quick paychecks and even quicker job dissatisfaction. “There’s a feeling of satisfaction when you know in your gut a client should or shouldn’t take a job, and you’re able to help them navigate that,” says Lees-Heidt. “It’s often hard for an actor to say ‘no’, especially in a line of work where you don’t know when your next pay cheque will come. S: To quote Helen Keller, “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” When you bring together the dynamics of two different skills sets, amazing things can happen. As Entrepreneurs, what is the best advice you COULD give to other women in business? S: Find a mentor who has accomplished the goals you currently have for yourself, whether it’s for your business or at the workplace. There are great networks for women in Vancouver such as Forum Women of Entrepreneurs. C: Don’t let the fear of failing stop you from pursuing your passions. It’s better to try something and fail than to never try at all.

What are your core BUSINESS values? S: Be unique, work hard, and always overdeliver. C: Be professional and positive. Give everyone you come in contact with the perfect client experience.

inding your signature scent has never been more challenging, or more exciting. With 40% of Canadian work places having scent free policies and others requesting that scent be light out of respect for co-workers and customers you really need to know what the ingredients are in your scent to avoid being called out. Not to worry, there are ways to enjoy your signature scent now more than ever with so many niche brands cropping up and the easy access to essential oils; you may find yourself becoming a nose, crafting your own signature scent! The reason your signature scent defines you in many ways is that it is literally your trademark. Your scent becomes your brand to those around you. Your signature scent conjures up happy memories for the ones who love you because scent has the most power of all of the five senses. The receptor that registers scent is located in the back of our brains right beside the area where all of our emotions are controlled, so it has all the power in the world over us and quite possibly those around us.

Scent can trigger happy memories and make us feel positive emotions, but it also has the power to remind us of negative experiences. All the more reason to become creative in finding your signature scent so that it is like no one else’s on the planet. It also doesn’t have to be one scent. There is no rule that you can’t create your own signature scent. I suggest a blend of your favourite oils and your favourite fragrance. You can create a hybrid. Because scent is so personal, what works for me, may not be the same on your skin. I recall standing beside a woman at an event and she smelled so gorgeous I had to ask her what she was wearing; I felt I had to go and find that scent. She told me it was orange blossom. I asked her what brand and she looked at me and said, “Your brand, The 7 Virtues.” I realized that the fragrance I had created smelled even more amazing on her than me due to personal chemistry. When creating your signature scent don’t be afraid to mix things up. My husband wears Vetiver with Rose and it makes a masculine rose. Rose is a scent that we

often associate with our grandmothers, not our hot husbands. But when it blends with the musky, masculine vetiver it gives rose a new blend that no other man wears. He even blends rose with patchouli and it’s just gorgeous. So even if you have a favourite type of scent like floral or Citrus, you can always make it even more unique by playing with different notes and perhaps adding a hint of warm musk to your floral scent or a spice to your citrus. Thankfully, there are no rules to wearing your signature scent outside of the scent-free policy in some workplaces. But even those rules really should not have banned scent, but rather the harsh chemicals found in so many commercial fragrances. You want to ensure your signature scent is phthalate free, paraben-free and of course cruelty free and vegan (no animal product). It is the phthalates in fragrances that are really what should have been banned in the workplace, as they are what spoiled it for the rest of us. Phthalates are what make that sickening scent walk in the room ahead of a person and it clings to the air in an elevator long after the wearer has left. Sadly, the phthalates are very bad for your skin and if we banned phthalates maybe we wouldn’t have scentfree places. Natural oils are light and you would have to be intimate with the person to smell it. Truly, that is what a signature scent should be, it is there for the wearer and the people who love them and get close enough for a hug, a warm embrace or a loving kiss. There is nothing like nestling your nose into your partner’s neck and breathing in their unique signature scent.

The Art of the Connection ROAM Gallery founder Jennifer Angers Daerendinger is the woman Vancouver artists need to know. By KRISTeN Van VLOTEN

I

n every city, there are a handful of people who can make or break you, depending on what you do. So when New York art scene darling Jason Dussault needed a place in Vancouver to show his work, luckily someone gave him Jennifer Angers Daerendigner’s name. Jennifer occupies a unique space in the Vancouver art scene. She’s a respected curator with a taste for the obscure. She’s champion of the underdog who also moves in successful circles. Jennifer is the founder of ROAM Gallery, a space based in Vancouver’s City Square Shopping Centre that caters to emerging artists. Urban Barn founder Rick Bohonis handpicked her to be part of the team at his new fashion-forward home furnishing retailer, Suquet Interiors. Now she’s the woman both unknown and established artists with a need for creative exhibition opportunities need to know. Enter Mr. Dussault, whose pop-cultureinspired mosaics tend to create a stir wherever they are featured. His December 2015 Vancouver showing at Kimoto Gallery—the gallery Jennifer ultimately

connected him to—was no different. There, a stunning multicolored rendering of Justin Trudeau made waves, selling for $20,000. “Vancouver can be tough,” she says, “It’s a tough city for getting people out to events. But then again, where isn’t it tough to be an artist? Making a living from your art depends a lot on who you know.” What made Jennifer into the arts champion she is today? She explains that although her true art is curation, she did spend her childhood “sitting and drawing for hours.” Fortunately, her fine art instincts were fully supported. “Hanging in my home is a nude 36 x 24 painting,” she says. “People ask me where it came from and I explain it was a paint-bynumbers I did when I was nine. How cool is my mom, right?” Jennifer comes by her knack for thinking outside the box honestly. And thinking outside the box is something she helps emerging artists to do, especially now that she is with Suquet Interiors. She explains that the retailer is a great option for high caliber artists who need space to show their work.

“Suquet doesn’t show art to ‘match your room’,” she says. “They display truly fine art that a buyer might acquire because it’s going to be valuable one day.” She laughs, explaining further: “Justin [Ogilvie, the painter,] said, ‘I’m terrified of showing my art at a furniture store’, but when he came into Suquet and saw his work displayed, he was like, ‘This is beyond anything I’ve ever imagined.’ He was stunned by how beautiful it was.” Perennially drawn to the offbeat, Jennifer’s currently planning a few shows at ROAM that will certainly please anybody with a taste for something different. “There’s a page on Facebook called ‘Canuck and I’, all about Shawn Bergman, who I work with at Suquet, and his relationship with a crow who adopted him,” she explains. “So I’m going to put together a show with a group of artists, each of whom will interpret the ‘Canuck and I’ story in their own way.” Who could resist something like that? I don’t think Mother Nature could have made a more delicious vehicle to deliver these. Dark chocolate improves blood flow to the brain, and can make you feel happy by increasing levels of endorphins (your feel-good hormones). So go ahead, and grab a cookie (or two)— guilt-free—and let your happiness shine!

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

1 cup of cashew butter 1/4 cup of organic Dutch Cocoa Powder 1/2 cup of maple syrup 1/4 tsp baking soda 1 egg 1/4 tsp sea salt 1/4 cup of gluten-free oats 1/2 cup of gluten-free, dairy-free, dark chocolate chips (I like Enjoy Life brand)

In a large glass bowl, add cashew butter and maple syrup. Mix by hand with wooden spoon until smooth. Beat egg in separate bowl. Add egg to cashew butter. Mix in cocoa powder, baking soda, sea salt, and oats until combined. Mix in chocolate chips at end. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a small ice cream scooper to place dough on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 14 minutes (or adjust depending on how hot your oven is).

icro blading, permanent makeup, cosmetic tattoo, feathering. The buzz around brows has blown up over the past two years and it’s a trend that’s here to stay. With today’s modern techniques, we can now achieve a very natural effect that doesn’t look like you have a tattoo, but more like you had a brow hair transplant! Micro blading is a technique that creates hair-like strokes with a manual pen that has a series of 12-16 needles that are implanted into the dermal layers of the skin. By implanting into the epidermis and the dermis, we achieve a natural, semipermanent result. Typically, your brow tattoo should last anywhere from one to three years, depending on lifestyle, skin type, and body chemistry. For example, brows on people who have low iron will fade faster, since the common pigments are iron oxide based, so your body will absorb them faster. I always get asked right off the bat, “Will it hurt?” The answer is: it depends on what your pain threshold is! If you can handle laser hair removal, waxing, or threading, then you will not find the tattoo painful. We use top-ofthe-line numbing agents before and during your session to keep you super relaxed and comfortable. I can’t count how many times I had clients fall asleep while I tattoo them! A word of advice: don’t book close to our during your period—this will make you much more sensitive. Of course, you can’t always plan ahead, so if you do have your period, just let your technician know so they can use a little extra numbing agent on you during the tattoo. Also, if you want to take painkillers before your appointment, only take Tylenol Extra Strength—do NOT take Advil, Ibuprofen, or any blood-thinning medicine!

AFTERCARE Aftercare is the most important thing that I stress to my clients. After all, you wouldn’t get an operation and not follow your doctor’s orders to rehabilitate. The fact is, if you don’t take care of your brows while healing, you will not be happy with your results. There are many different aftercare regimens out there depending on the technician you choose, so again, do your research so you can be prepared to take care of your brows after your tattoo. At BE Studio, we send the aftercare information as soon as you inquire about an appointment. This way, you

know what to do and can plan and schedule around the healing time. For example, the brows will usually be 20-30% darker while healing (darkest on the third day due to the oxidization of the ink), so it’s good to know this ahead of time so you aren’t blindsided when you wake up on Day 3 and have to go an event with super dark brows! I suggest wearing more eye makeup or a brighter lipstick to balance out the bold brows. It all depends on your comfort level; some people are used to wearing darker brows and some aren’t, so having this information ahead of time will keep you comfortable. Do your research when choosing a technician! Ask around for referrals, and if you can’t get a referral, then make sure the technician has lots of photos of their work that you can view. Also ask about their background. Were they previously in the makeup industry? How many years of tattooing experience do they have? Lots of people have started doing microblading because of its popularity, which has been both great and bad for the industry. You want to make sure that you choose someone who is designing a shape for you based on your face shape, skin tone, eye shape, hair colour, and skin type. A follow-up appointment is also necessary. This is not a one-shot deal where you get the tattoo and then don’t have to go back again for three years. Touch-up appointments are so important! After about four weeks, you will see your results from the first session; you can then go back at around five weeks for a “perfecting” appointment to adjust shape, size, and colour. The brows will look very bold and appear larger while healing. Once healed, they will look softer and smaller.
