t’s hard to believe fall is already here – where did the summer go? Indeed, there are very few days left for sandals, sundresses and patio soirees. Every year, I wait patiently (well, maybe not too patiently) through the rain and the chill, and when summer arrives, I fully embrace the sunshine and warm weather – for the very short time we have it! Sometimes it feels like I blink my eyes and it’s gone, and much like chocolate, I never seem to get my fill. Pamela Martin, however, knows what it’s like to be fulfilled. This iconic Canadian news anchor is not only a fantastically successful TV personality, she’s also a dedicated mother, loving wife and devoted daughter. When editor Liberty Craig and I interviewed Pamela for this issue of FV, we were exceptionally impressed with this beautiful, balanced woman who unwaveringly opened up to us, revealing her thoughts on aging gracefully and her secrets for looking young at any age. Speaking with Pamela gave me a thrill, to be sure – I have watched her on television since I was a girl – but it also gave me a sense of ease. She has found the perfect balance in her life and nearly radiates serenity. Because of her sense of inner peace, she is just as beautiful today, if not more so, than she was 10 or 20 years ago. I could learn a thing or two from Pamela Martin when it comes to taking things in stride and enjoying the poignant moments in life, like when my daughter tells me she loves me, when my husband gives me a kiss, and when the sun comes out again. Because it will – not for a few more months, but it will – and when it does I’ll embrace it once more.

for one have mixed feelings about the fall season. While I love the crisp, sunny days that fall can bring; the refreshing cool after our glorious heat waves this summer, there is always an autumnal mood of reflection that overtakes me at this time of year. Whether I’m haunted by the back-to-school ghosts of seasons past or simply embodying the darkening of the days and the dying of the leaves, I don’t know. What I do know is that at this time of year more than any other, I crave a little pampering, a little indulgence, and definitely some “me time.” This is the perfect time, for example, to spend a few days of reverie at the luxurious Rockwater Resort on the Sunshine Coast, enjoying the calming influence of ocean-side accommodations while spoiling yourself with five-star spa and dining experiences – see our Destination Spa article for more information. We’ve also included such indulgent treats as Thai massage, the nourishing at-home facial massage for Cleopatra skin, and the fabulous “signature treatments” you likely haven’t heard of. And if you’re feeling less indulgent and more inclined to give yourself a mini-overhaul this fall, check out the reasons why you should consider getting a personal fitness trainer, think about doing a little laser contouring and perhaps a
chemical peel, and discover the healing benefits of proper posture. The article on non-surgical facelifts may be just for you! This is also a good time of year to reassess our health. Could there be a problem with your thyroid? How healthy are your breasts? Are you too tired for sex, or in need of a few herbs to amp up your libido? Our experts address these and other health problems you need to keep on top of (no pun !). And if, like me, you get a little melancholy at this time of year, be sure to review the “mood foods” you should be ingesting to put the springtime bounce back in your step... until spring rolls back around! For those more serious about a little “fall cleaning,” be sure to check out our contributing doctors’ articles on liposuction and abdominoplasty. And last but certainly not least, I want to encourage everyone to have a good read through our interview with esteemed news anchor Pamela Martin. This accomplished yet graceful figure, so familiar to those of us who have watched her for years on CTV News at Six, is not only a big-hearted supporter of many charities (including the CIBC Run for the Cure this October) but also a warm, wise, and inspiring individual who can teach us all a little something about aging elegantly inside and out. Stay Fresh!

Facing the Facts about
Non-Surgical Facelifts By Liberty Craig
W
hile the days of the surgical facelift are by no means over, today’s less invasive options are varied and plentiful, offering a number of strategies to reverse the effects of time without resorting to the trauma of surgery. Yet it is important to remain realistic about what these non-surgical techniques can truly accomplish. Will they make your skin look better? Yes. Non-invasive techniques will typically freshen and tighten your skin, giving you a more youthful yet natural appearance. But make no mistake: though they are effective, these treatments simply do not have the same effect as literally removing skin from your face and neck, and tightening what is left. Only a surgical facelift can do this, and, gruesome as it sounds, it is by far the most effective treatment option for eliminating the drooping and wrinkling of aging skin. However, many men and women today simply aren’t interested in such a radical (not to mention expensive!) procedure, in part because they fear the effects. Taken too far, a surgical procedure can look unnatural. Even at its most subtle, a facelift surgery is likely to be noticed by family and friends. A facelift surgery is painful and poses some risks, and requires a lengthy recovery time. If you wish to try a gentler option that will allow you to age gracefully... but still look the best you can, then a non-surgical option might be the best route for you. There are a huge number of choices with varying degrees of intensity – and effectiveness. This article will explore a few of the most popular options.
Facelift in a Jar
The mildest form of non-surgical facelift is really more of a misnomer than a valid candidate for facelift options. DMAE (dimethylethanolamine) is a skin-firming treatment that has become known as “the facelift in a jar.” Other facelift creams and powders containing highly concentrated solutions of amino acids such as hexapeptide and alpha hydroxyl acid can also be used to tighten skin and reduce fine lines. Some of these products can be applied at home; others should be handled by an aesthetician or skincare doctor. But do these products really deserve to be in the same category as non-surgical facelift treatments, or are they simply expensive wrinkle creams? Probably the latter – although some of these products do seem to be more effective than other wrinkle creams on the market. Part of the hype surrounding the “facelift in a jar” concept stems from Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s emphasis on the benefits of DMAE in his best-selling book The Wrinkle Cure.
Facelift in a Box
Another mild cosmetic treatment that compares itself to a kind of facelift is a hand-held electromagnetic device. These “home rejuvenation” systems are made by a variety of different companies and use slightly different technologies, but are similar in that they all use an intensity level safe enough for home use. Anecdotal evidence and some third-party research

shows these hand-held devices to be effective in reducing fine lines, age spots, acne and scarring, and tightening and freshening the skin. The product branded under the name “Oxylift” is marketed as the “facelift in a box.” Clever!
Facelift in a Needle
... And no, that doesn’t mean Botox! An age-old technique that is of increasing interest to today’s woman who wants to age beautifully and naturally is cosmetic acupuncture. Cosmetic acupuncture uses the healing properties of this traditional Chinese remedy for pain, disease, and overall health, and applies it to the face. The insertion of tiny needles increases circulation to the face and stimulates collagen production, thereby eliminating fine lines and resulting in plump, healthy skin. There are many reported side benefits to cosmetic acupuncture as well, including increased energy and vigour.
Lunchtime Facelift
A number of cosmetic procedures these days like to fancy themselves the “lunchtime facelift,” but in fact the term was applied first and most accurately to the thread facelift. A thread facelift is just that: the insertion of a barbed thread into the skin (usually using a needle) to literally tug drooping skin back up to where it used to be. Sometimes a small incision is made during this procedure, but a thread facelift is a quick and easy procedure that requires no down time. Thread facelifts are impermanent and the procedure must be repeated after the tightened skin begins to sag. Occasionally there are complications like a visible surfacing of the thread (which is usually blue); yet the thread facelift remains one of the only non-surgical options that really can compare itself to the surgical facelift.
Liquid Facelift
A liquid facelift is the humorous term for fillers such as Juvaderm, Restylane or Sculptra, which are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers used to plump the skin and fill deep wrinkles or enhance aging lips. Lines across the forehead, cheeks, jaw line, chin, and those that run from your nose to the corners of your mouth can be eliminated with a dermal filler. The fillers are injected in small quantities and may cause mild swelling, but should result in very little recovery time. Results will last for up to one year. The category of liquid facelifts should also include Botox, since this well-known botulism concoction is in fact injected into the face in liquid form. Botox works by relaxing the muscle contractions of the face, thereby reducing the appearance of frown lines and expression wrinkles. Botox is popular and effective, with results that last up to four months. But can Botox and dermal fillers really be compared to facelifts? Together, they can certainly reduce or even eliminate wrinkles. They can plump the skin and give it a tighter appearance. So, yes, the liquid form of facelift can compete against the real thing.

Electrical Facelift
A microcurrent or Bio-Ultimate facelift delivers electrical stimulation to the muscles of the face to stimulate cell function and improve skin tone, reduce lines and wrinkles, and improve circulation and skin exfoliation as well as sun damage and cellulite. The treatment, which usually consists of multiple one-hour sessions performed by a specialist, is also reported to improve lymphatic drainage and boost circulation and metabolism.
Radiofrequency Facelift
A very popular option these days is the use of heat to cause the collagen under the skin to contract, resulting in a skin-tightening effect. One of the most popular agents of the heat facelift is known as Thermage. Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to heat the inner layers of the skin (fat and collagen) to tighten and rejuvenate the skin’s collagen structure, which weakens with age and exposure to toxins. A major selling point of Thermage is that the painless treatment, which takes effect immediately, requires only one session. Aluma is another brand that uses radiofrequency energy as a cosmetic procedure.
Laser Facelift
There are actually two types of laser facelifts – one of which is a surgical procedure; the other being the skin-tightening non-surgical technique. The non-surgical laser facelift is similar to the radiofrequency facelift, except that it uses infrared light to heat the skin and tighten collagen structures. Titan is a well-known laser therapy treatment; Lux-IR is less well-known. No long-term studies have been completed to prove the relative efficacy of these treatments, though some professionals believe that infrared technology is more highly controlled and thus preferable to radiofrequency treatments like Thermage. However, where Thermage typically requires only one treatment, laser skin tightening generally requires up to six treatments for full effectiveness. From the mildest to the more advanced, these non-surgical facelift options give you a choice of how – and how significantly – you want to address the aging of your skin over time. No, they won’t give you the same effects as a full facelift surgery. However, they can lift, tighten, plump, and rejuvenate... and help you look and feel your best at any age.
Softlift: The Soft Touch Your Face May Need
By Dr Marcia Fleming
As we age, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish and wrinkles and folds form. These changes in our skin are often referred to as the three “Ds” – descent, deflation and decay. But with Botox and Juvéderm™ injectable gel, you don’t have to just sit back and let it happen! “SoftLift” is a combination of Botox and dermal fillers, and it is very patient specific. There is no set amount of either Botox or fillers for any treatment. The objective of the Softlift is to restore volume to the face and relax overactive muscles, giving the face a more natural, rested, youthful look. The procedure can be highly effective without the pain, expense and risk of a traditional surgical approach. As the face ages the cheeks lose their high plumpness and thicken around the smile lines that run from the nose to the mouth. The lips thin and tend to curve downward and jowls form, creating more shadowing and folds in the lower face. Once fresh and smooth, the face instead begins to look stern, tired and unhappy. We appear grumpy – whether or not we actually feel this way inside. By lessening the frown in the forehead and mouth area, opening the eyes, and making the cheeks rise up to elevate the lower face using volume instead of pulling, one looks more natural. Your face is simply returning to its previous, younger appearance. There is minimal risk and clients have found that the effects can continue and even improve over the course of the year following treatment. Botox has proven extremely effective and safe for medical use. It

has been used for multiple conditions such as cerebral palsy, migraines, bladder dysfunction, and excessive sweating, to name a few. Cosmetically, we use smaller doses to give amazing results. World-weary from the over-promise and under-delivery of so many products, women and men today are thrilled with the photographic improvement they experience with Botox. Restoring volume requires the use of a gel that is much the same as the gel found naturally within our skin cells. With these new gels, which are identical to our own but held together with protein strands for longevity and additional structure, we can achieve fullness where it has depleted. Together, Botox and dermal filler gels can achieve the result of a more youthful, refreshed and relaxed face in one or two treatment sessions. Dr. Marcia Fleming is one of the most accomplished and respected physicians in the field of cosmetic rejuvenation and has been practicing in the Vancouver area for over nine years. Her goal is to help everyone achieve beautiful skin for life, beginning at any age. She can be reached at Delta Laser & Skin Care Centre, call 604-543-8965.

Defining a New You:
The Art of Body Contouring By Sarah Meanchoff
M
ost of us could probably stand to spend a little more time at the gym. And sure, there’s likely a brownie or a cocktail somewhere in our weekly diet that shouldn’t be there. We could always do more, do better, be more persistent and more dedicated with our diet and exercise programmes. And if you spend too much time on the couch or those brownies become a twice-daily addiction, it is most certainly time to rethink your approach to your health. Consult a nutritionist to reset your food intake; pick up a cookbook featuring healthful meals intended for correct nutritional and caloric intake. Book a few sessions with a personal trainer to fast-track your way back to fit with an exercise routine that’s efficient and fun. But what if, after all this, you’re still unhappy with the fatty deposits on your body? First, take your perception of yourself with a grain of salt. Most women view themselves as fatter than they really are, and significantly heavier than the “ideal weight” or the weight that “men prefer” (David A. Gershaw, Ph.D). To attain a fair assessment of where your body is really at, try this: Find a room in your house with a highquality (non-distorting) full-length mirror, and a light with a dimmer switch. Dim the lights and remove all of your clothing. Stand at a distance of at least three feet from the mirror, so you get a full view of your entire body in flattering lighting. Now, be gentle! Focus first on what you like about yourself. Then consider what you would like to change. If you have had more than one pregnancy or have gained and lost a significant amount of weight, you may have extra skin, hanging love handles, and fatty deposits on your hips that are very difficult to eradicate through diet and exercise alone. Belly, hip, and “saddle bag” fat can be the last thing to go for women, even if your arms and legs are fit and taught. The same can be true for belly, love handle, and “man boob” fatty deposits in men. You could learn to live with these imperfections. You could do something drastic, like having a liposuction or tummy tuck surgery. But if neither of these options feel right for you, you may want to consider a gentle but highly effective alternative. It’s called “lipolaser” and it’s the one of the newest non-invasive body
contouring procedures available. With lipolaser there are no needles, no knives, no pain, and no recovery time. Yet it can help you shrink down unwanted bulk in specific areas of your body. Lipolaser works by emitting a cold laser through paddles that are placed on the skin in the areas that require reduction. The laser targets the subcutaneous fat cells only millimetres beneath the skin; as such, there is no risk to the rest of your body. The adipocytes are temporarily perforated by the laser and some of the contents of each cell are released into the lymphatic system where they can be flushed out

Get Your Libido Back Naturally with Herbal Hormone Helpers
An ancient Chinese adage states, “A doctor would rather treat 10 men than one woman.” This can be especially true when dealing with a woman’s hormonal concerns. At the heart of a woman’s complexity are her hormones, their ebb and flow influencing all aspects of physical, emotional and sexual health. Our sex hormones include, but are not limited to, estrogen, testosterone, DHEA and progesterone. When a woman’s hormones are in balance, she feels fabulous, her skin glows, and she has energy and vitality. By Lorna Vanderhaeghe, MS Most people erroneously believe a drop in a woman’s libido is age-related, affecting only older women. However, one study found that over 21 percent of women aged 70 years or older still have regular sex, while younger women in their thirties tend to be the ones with the biggest decline in libido due to stress, working, young families and lack of time. According to the same University of Chicago study, 43 percent of women have no sex drive, and many women suffer with pain during intercourse. Many factors contribute to a decline in a woman’s libido, including low thyroid (hypothyroidism), the birth control pill, excess levels of the hormone prolactin, low testosterone, prescription and over-the-counter medications, stress, hormone-disrupting estrogens in the environment and relationship problems, to name a few. If you are struggling with low libido, pain upon intercourse, weak or absent orgasms, or vaginal dryness, certain diagnostic tests should be performed. Ask your doctor or naturopath about the following tests: • A blood test for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) should be performed to make sure your levels are below 2.0. • A blood test for free testosterone, which measures testosterone that is not bound to sex-hormone-binding globulin. • A saliva hormone panel for estrogens including estradiol, estrone and estriol. Blood testing is not very accurate in measuring estrogen levels – saliva testing is more accurate.
Sexual hormone herbal helpers
Once the physical, emotional and physiological factors are ruled out, getting your sex drive back can be easy with a healthy diet, regular exercise and a few key nutritional supplements. A scant amount of research has been performed in the area of libido-enhancing drugs or nutrients for women, but there are a couple of nutrients that really shine when it comes to improving a woman’s love life. Arginine, known as L-arginine in a nutritional supplement form, is an essential amino acid and the main source of the primary molecule nitric oxide (NO). NO is responsible for sexual arousal in women. Without arginine, there is no NO and no sexual arousal. In research on women, supplemental L-arginine has been reported to increase the intensity of sensation during sex. NO stimulates blood flow to the genitals, leading to orgasm.

As a woman ages, her levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) increase dramatically, peaking a few years after menopause and staying high for several decades thereafter. As FSH increases, it negatively affects luteinizing hormone’s ability to increase testosterone. Tribulus terrestris, a prosexual herb used for thousands of years in men, works in women by helping to naturally boost a woman’s levels of luteinizing hormone levels over FSH levels, which then helps to produce more testosterone. Clinical trials with women using Tribulus terrestris were performed at the First Obstetrical and Gynecological Hospital in Sofia, Bulgaria on 150 women with abnormal ovulation associated with hormone imbalances. One group of women were given Tribulus terrestris while the other group of women received estrogens and testosterone only, with no Tribulus terrestris. In the group taking Tribulus, women experienced a normalization of ovulation, improved fertility, and a reduction in peri- and postmenopausal symptoms. Most important, Tribulus increased libido much more than the hormone therapy alone. For women, the neurotransmitter that sends sexual messages to the nerves, called acetylcholine (ACh), is also a very important part of sexual function. ACh is involved in the build-up toward orgasm and the urethral and vaginal contractions that occur during orgasm, as well as the subjective perception of orgasm intensity and duration. Pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5, is part of the B group vitamins. Along with choline, pantothenic acid enhances acetylcholine. Eurycoma longifolia, also known as Malaysian ginseng, is another missing key in helping women’s libido. This potent herb not only enhances orgasms but improves vaginal dryness. These herbs and nutrients in a combined formula, in addition to regular exercise and a nutritious diet low in sugar, processed carbohydrates and unhealthy fats can help rebalance your hormones and bring the zest back to your sex life. ... Kegels, Lubes, and Hormones to Get the Zest Back
If you are suffering vaginal dryness or thinning of the vaginal wall, perform Kegel exercises daily to develop strong vaginal muscles. If you sneeze or laugh and urine leaks out, you need to do your Kegels. Not only will Kegels reduce urinary incontinence and urinary frequency, they will also improve the intensity and duration of your orgasms. Prescription bioidentical vaginal estriol cream can also be used for vaginal dryness and vaginal atrophy. In an open, multi-centre, controlled study, 629 women were treated with vaginally administered estriol at 1.0 mg daily for three weeks, and 1.0 mg bi-weekly for a further three weeks. After six weeks of treatment, vaginal lubrication was improved in 77 percent of patients, and painful intercourse was no longer present in 88 percent. The recommended dosage for intra-vaginal estriol is 0.5-1 mg once daily for three weeks, with 0.5-1 mg once weekly for six months. Do not use estradiol as it can cause abnormal thickening of the uterus and breast tissue. To get your orgasms back you can also add bioidentical testosterone to the prosexual herbs we discussed above. The cream or gel is applied just above the clitoris, containing 0.5-1 mg of testosterone, applied daily in the morning for two weeks, then reduced to one application per week. This often works to return desire in a healthy relationship.

Ten Steps to a
Cleopatra Complexion By Tracy Kaye Holly
Start with Radiant Skin
I
’m sure we all know that Cleopatra was renowned for being a beautiful woman with a stunning complexion. Even if it’s just legend, her name still conjures up that much sought-after image of natural, flawless, beautiful skin. The belief that beauty is linked to healthy skin has remained a constant throughout the ages. Cleopatra and other Egyptian queens were known to follow beauty regimens that focused on creating beautiful skin as an outcome. I have always moisturized my skin and my whole body from top to bottom. When I lived in Europe many years ago, I learned how to utilize the crème de la crème of beauty creams for every part of my body – literally! I used eye cream, face cream, décolletage cream, hand cream, cuticle cream, foot cream, buttock cream, and leg and thigh cream. Did I miss anything? Maybe the retail stores saw me coming and sold me costly products that weren’t necessary; I don’t know. However, I do know that my skin was well moisturized and the time and energy it took to massage the creams over my body was well worth the effort. My skin glowed. Today, this daily habit of massaging and moisturizing my skin has more than proven itself. I currently use a high-quality Canadian manufactured colostrum cream and virgin coconut oil. Combined, these two natural cosmetic wonders work their magic over my entire body, plus I use the coconut oil in my recipes to obtain the multitude of health benefits it offers.
Healthy, soft and radiant skin starts from the inside out. Every day, I drink many litres of filtered water, eat mounds of raw vegetables and incorporate plenty of essential fatty acids into my diet, such as flax, hemp and an array of antioxidant seed oils in my protein shakes and salad dressings. The skin is the largest eliminative organ and contrary to conventional belief, much of what goes on your skin can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Many skincare products are chemically based or modified. When purchasing a commercial moisturizer, avoid products with words listed on the ingredient panel you can’t pronounce such as petroleum by-products, artificial colours or fragrances. Real creams with natural and essential oils are concentrated and therefore, preferred over most lotions. Also, be sure to choose the right skincare products for your skin type. If you have normal skin, your skin will have a clear, fine textured, supple and smooth surface that is neither greasy nor dry. It glows with an inner health that stems from good blood circulation and excellent health. If you have dry skin, your parched look is caused by your skin’s inability to retain moisture. Dry skin is fine-textured and is prone to wrinkles and chapping. Dry skin is more difficult to moisturize in cold weather. If you have oily skin, you probably have coarse pores and pimples, and your skin will look greasy. For excessively oily skin, consume a diet rich in highquality proteins but restricted in chemically altered fats, sodium and fluids with added sugar.
Perfect the Nourishing Massage
The face, neck and décolleté moisturizing ritual that I’ve practiced for many years only takes a few minutes. Incorporating this ancient technique into your daily health regime prevents dryness, damage and cross-linking (wrinkles) by restoring the delicate moisture balance of the skin and activating the process of detoxification and elimination. Step 1: Wash your face, then dip your clean fingers into the cream or oil (using approximately one half-teaspoon) and rub into the palms of your hands. Step 2: Close your eyes and start massaging your cheeks slowly and gently in a circular movement, using all of your fingertips to complete 20 circles.

Step 3: Move to the outside of your nose and massage from the bridge to the nasal labia, up, down and outwards from the base of the nose for a count of 20. Step 4: With the index and middle finger of both hands, vigorously massage your forehead in a lateral or horizontal direction, right hand moving left to right and left hand moving right to left, also to a count of 20. Step 5: Using four fingers of each hand, massage gently around the eyes and the tip of the cheekbone in a circular movement, moving each hand outwards and downward, again to a count of 20. Step 6: Move down to your neck and use the fingers of both hands to stroke in an upward direction towards the chin, moving from the left side to the right side of the neck for a count of 20. Step 7: Move to the chest or décolletage area and use both hands, moving them in opposite directions, massaging vigorously for a count of 20. Step 8: Using your thumb and all fingers, gently pinch your chin. With both hands, pinch along the jawbone, moving slowly toward the ears for a count of 10. Step 9: Finish by cupping both hands together moving upwards toward your forehead and out several times. Step 10: With the remaining cream or oil, massage your elbows, hands and cuticles. This massage and moisturize strategy, perfected over time, provides extremely reliable results. It’s also an enjoyable way to relieve muscle tension in your face, neck and upper body. It improves blood and lymph circulation and truly captures the essence of natural beauty. Like exercise itself, this simple technique is well worth the physical effort. And just like Cleopatra, you too will feel like the Queen of the Nile. Tracy is the Executive Director to the Cory Holly Institute and a CSNA (Certified Sports Nutrition Advisor) Master. The Inspiring
Pamela Martin’s lovely visage is well-known to us as anchor of CTV News At Six for almost a decade, preceded by more than twenty years with BCTV news. A ground-breaking pioneer of women in the media, this vibrant figure is a major contributor to breast cancer awareness, raising funds to facilitate this important research. We spoke with Pamela Martin about the upcoming Run for the Cure this October, plus her spirituality, family, career, and the secrets of how she stays so young… Fresh Vancouver (FV): You were the first female reporter for CKNW radio and the first female anchor of a major newscast for BCTV. What was it like in those early years? Pamela Martin: It was pretty exciting in those days to have the opportunity. It’s strange to think that 30 years ago, some questioned whether women could do the job. I had to convince people at CKNW that I could manage dead bodies, hanging out at the police station, horrible things I might have to witness as a reporter. Now women anchor national newscasts, are news directors, even network presidents. We have broken through the glass ceiling – it seems so odd now that we even had those thoughts. FV: You give back to the community extensively with the United Way, the Canadian Cancer Society, the BC AIDS Society, and more... Tell us about your motivation. Pamela: In the news business, constantly dealing with negative things can skew your view of the world. Every plane crash... every domestic murder... you have to remember that there are wonderful things happening, too. Bringing attention to a situation in even a small way and helping people is incredibly fulfilling. I feel very fortunate to be in this position, able to have some impact.
FV: How has your spirituality been affected by seeing so much negativity? Pamela: You become more conscious of it. You don’t know how long you’ll live, so you really have to live in the present. Look to the future and learn from the past, but treasure what you are doing right now. I try to live like that every day, but it’s hard. A friend told me: imagine your life starting at zero and continuing to the end of your life, let’s say 100. Look where you are on that scale and you realize, this is all I have left: 30 more Christmases, 30 more summers to pick blueberries. How many more times will I spend with my family? My mother is 83, and she lives in Florida now, so I only see her about three times a year. And I was thinking (this is going to make me cry) how many more times am I going to see her? What if it’s five? [Pauses to wipe tears from her eyes.]You should live your life making sure your values direct your decisions. That has a spiritual overlay; being conscious of your connections to people and what might exist beyond our reality. Most of us become more aware of this as we get older. FV: Let’s talk about your work with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Run for the Cure. Finding a cure for breast cancer is particularly close to your heart...

Pamela: It is, although I was doing stories about breast cancer at the very beginning of my career. People didn’t talk about breast cancer back then, and there was not very much research being done. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 in Vancouver, and people have been talking about it ever since. The impact has been undeniable. Since 1986, the death rate from breast cancer has dropped by more than 30 percent – which is a lot of lives. It is still today the number-one killer of women – over 5,000 women in Canada every year. But a diagnosis is not a death sentence anymore thanks to the latest research, early detection and women getting their mammograms. It became personal when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is truly one of the great examples of what modern medicine can do. My mother was the recipient of all that had come before, and if things hadn’t changed, she probably wouldn’t have survived. FV: This October will be the third year in a row you’ve had your own team in the Run for the Cure. Tell us a little about Team Pamela... Pamela: The Run for the Cure is such a great event. It’s a real bonding of families and women of all ages. Some teams have been together for years, often supporting a person suffering from breast cancer, or running in honour of some-
one they’ve lost. Last year the Run for the Cure raised $26.5 million across Canada – in one day! We know it’s saving lives. I’m so grateful to CTV for sponsoring the run. It’s allowed me to get much more involved and to broadcast to a wider audience. FV: Do you train for the run? Pamela: When I was just doing it on my own, I did. But now I’m the emcee and do interviews with CTV during the run, so I don’t have time to participate! But I’m not a big runner. It’s just not my sport. FV: What is your sport? Pamela: My favourite sport is skiing. In the summer, my husband and I go out on our boat and we love to swim in the ocean. I also do Pilates, but I prefer being active and outdoors to being stuck in a gym. Doing as many sports as I can makes it fun, but you’re also exercising. Hiking, horseback riding, ice skating, skiing, swimming – I’ve done these things all my life. My mom is my role model. At 83, she could beat everyone in the family at tennis! Recently, though, she had a hip replaced... so now, she’s a table tennis champion! FV: What are your favourite hot spots for boating and hiking?
Pamela: BC is so beautiful.... I love to combine a great resort and a bit of luxury with the hiking and boating. In a few days, we’re going to Poet’s Cove on Pender Island. There’s a beautiful resort in Bidwell Harbour. A couple of years ago we went to Rockwater Resort on the Sunshine Coast. Really nice pool, great restaurant, and fabulous luxury “tents” – that’s my kind of camping!
love. I use drugstore products too, though! I actually use the nine-dollar Lubriderm with SPF 15 now... on my face!
FV: Did your mother give you the anti-aging techniques to keep you so young and vibrant?
Pamela: I totally agree – I make no judgements about it. The only thing I object to is when women have so much surgery that they look like a different person. That’s just sad. With surgery or any of these new procedures, do as much or as little as you personally feel like doing. But I don’t think it’s a great idea to tell people about it! Isn’t that the point – that you want it to be subtle? You just want to look like a better, fresher version of yourself.
Pamela: When I was about 12 years old, she told me to use Nivea cream on my entire body every day. I owe the health of my skin to using a lot of moisturizer over the years. She also told me: wash your face with soap and water, then rinse with ice-cold water. I guess it’s to close the pores – I don’t really know. But I do it every day! My mother is also a very engaged person – she’s a Bronze Life Master at bridge and she’s extremely active. That’s another key: keep your mind engaged as well as your body. Beauty really does come from within, and I think this is the real secret to aging well. FV: What product can’t you live without? Pamela: I love L’Occitane shea butter cream. Also, my friend Wendy Lisogar-Cocchia owns the Absolute Spa at the Century, and I go there as much as I can. She has a lot of products that I

FV: At Fresh Vancouver, we define beauty as being comfortable in the skin you’re in, whether that means getting your hair done or having a cosmetic surgery...
FV: What is it like to be constantly in the limelight and having to worry about appearance? Pamela: The only way to really deal with it is to not let it bother you. I try to get away as often as I can, boating in the Gulf Islands where hair and makeup aren’t a consideration. I have to admit I always wear lipstick, though! There’s always one thing you have to have, and for me it’s my lipstick! There is a certain amount of pressure on television. But in the end, I consider myself a journalist, and the actual work is

Pamela Loves Rockwater Resort! Check out the Rockwater Secret Cove restaurant, where Pamela recently enjoyed dinner. Below is a fabulous fall recipe from Chef Sinclair. Yum!
Pulled Pork Recipe Feeds: 10 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 cup(s) ketchup 1/3 cup(s) cider vinegar 1/4 cup(s) packed brown sugar 1/4 cup(s) tomato paste 2 tablespoon(s) smoked paprika 2 tablespoon(s) Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoon(s) Dijon mustard 1 1/2 teaspoon(s) salt 1 1/4 teaspoon(s) ground black pepper 4 pound(s) boneless pork shoulder blade roast (fresh pork butt), cut into 4 pieces 2L orange juice 2 limes juiced 12 soft sandwich buns or ciabatta rolls, warmed
Method In a large pot, stir onion, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, tomato paste, paprika, Worcestershire, mustard, salt, and pepper until combined. Add pork to sauce mixture and turn to coat well with sauce. Refrigerate overnight for best results, or at least 4 hours to allow flavours to form. Cover with orange juice, water and lime juice and cover pot with a lid and cook pork mixture on low for 3-4 hours or until pork is very tender. With tongs, transfer pork to large bowl. Turn the burner to medhigh; and heat sauce to boiling to thicken and reduce slightly...by about half. While sauce boils, with two forks, pull pork into shreds. Return shredded pork to pot and continue to reduce with sauce to combine. Cover pot and heat through on med if necessary. Serve in warm bun with a slice of white cheddar and a touch of coleslaw for best results.
communicating and reporting – it’s not about hairstyle or clothing. It’s human nature to notice these things, but as a newscaster I try to deemphasize them. The image needs to be about credibility and trustworthiness, not about looking a certain way. FV: What supplements do you take to ensure good health and ward off cancers and other major health concerns? Pamela: I take omega-3, vitamin D, and calcium every day, and vitamin C in the winter. I eat things like flax seed and almonds every day. I try to do all the things I need to do to stay healthy! FV: Twenty-five years ago you were having children while building your busy career in what was still very much a man’s world… Pamela: Yes. I wasn’t able to be as open about motherhood as women on television are today. Luckily, I could modify my job, doing evening and weekend newscasts so I could be home as much as possible when my children were little. And I always had live-in help. It’s a huge challenge and I think if a woman has a choice, it’s ideal to focus on your kids and your career at different times – although again, that’s very tough to do. It’s a dilemma, and I have nothing but sympathy for women in that situation. FV: You and your husband seem to have a great relationship! What do you do to keep the romance alive and healthy? Pamela: We work hard at keeping our connection. We each have our own busy, demanding lives, so it’s important to consciously plan things together, to not let our relationship just drift. Having fun together is high on my list! Also, we have shared values which makes a big difference. Nothing is more important to us than our family.

Tools Of The Trade:
Makeup Brushes By Julie Brown
U
sing good quality makeup products helps create a lasting, flawless face, and using proper brushes for each area of application is paramount. Just as a painter wouldn’t use one brush to paint a whole painting, nor should you rely on one brush or bad quality brushes to apply your makeup. Makeup professionals believe that a good makeup brush is a beauty secret akin to a good set of knives for a chef. In addition to using the correct brush for each area of application, the quality of the brush does make a difference. Quality brushes aren’t cheap but they are worth every penny.
What Your Brushes are Made Of
There are two types of brushes: natural animal hair brushes, and synthetic brushes. Natural hair brushes are graded by length, evenness of cut and firmness. Some of the best powder brushes are made from badger hair. Sable is often used for smaller, finer brushes because of its silky texture. Squirrel hair is quite expensive, and may even be mixed with cheaper but also very fine pony hair. Handmade goat hair brushes are also popular, being nearly as fine as squirrel. The best synthetic brushes are made from Taklon, which is made from a polyester fibre designed to mimic the characteristics of natural hair. It is smooth and soft. Synthetic brushes are more hygienic than real hair brushes, as natural hair has an irregular surface which traps powders, dead skin cells, and bacteria, and cleaning may not necessarily remove all of these particles. Taklon lacks these surface irregularities, making it easier to clean properly. Taklon is also vegan and animal cruelty free.
Which Brush For Which Makeup?
Foundation: For a well blended, flawless base, use a brush with good blending ability. One that has thicker, firmer bristles is just right for putting colour where you want it. These are good for applying and blending larger amounts of liquid or powder makeup, and for creating contour. Powder brushes, also called kabuki brushes, are great. My personal favourite brush is the Mineral Powder Foundation brush by LANCOME, which is made of synthetic fibres that are ideal for brushing on either ordinary face powder or ultra-fine mineral makeup. If you can only have one brush in your makeup bag, make it a fluffy powder brush because there is nothing better than a brush that blends the perfect finish. For liquid foundation application, I recommend MAC #188 or #130. Eyeshadow: For the base shadow (all over the lid) use a brush that is flat, thick and stiff. This will be the largest of the eye makeup brushes as you are covering the entire lid with shadow. I recommend MAC #227, or #252. For the lid colour (on lid up to the crease), use a brush that is firm, flat and compact as you will be placing darker pigmented colour in this area and you want control in placement so you do not have fallout of shadow onto the face. I recommend MAC #239. For the crease colour (outer corner and in natural fold in the lid), use a rounded, tapered, soft brush. This brush will move smoothly back and forth in the crease and blend in shadow beautifully. I recommend MAC #223. Eyebrow And Eyeliner: You can use the same brush for eyebrow and eyeliner – a slim, firm, angled brush. I prefer the synthetic one as it is stiffer for more precise application. I recommend MAC #263.
19
|
Blush: The best brush shape for applying blush is an angled, rounded, medium-firm brush. The angle helps create contour on the cheeks and is also great for application onto the temples and apples of the cheeks. I recommend ADESIGN angled cheek brush or MAC #168. Concealer: Concealer brushes are about the same size as eye makeup brushes. It should be a soft brush to blend the concealer right into the skin. I recommend MAC #252, #217 or ADESIGN medium concealer brush. If you are looking to purchase good quality brushes, I would recommend brushes from MAC, ADesign, Bobby Brown, Giorgio Armani, and Ve Neill (vesfavoritebrushes.com). You can find professional cosmetic brushes online for a fraction of the price you would spend on brushes found in a traditional beauty supply store. Don’t cheat yourself out of quality makeup brushes: the right brush puts makeup on the right way. No finger smudging or messing around with Q-tips or ratty cotton balls! When you use quality makeup brushes, you take your look to the next level. A high-quality professional makeup brush makes a difference in the way your makeup goes on and stays on. It’s a difference you can see! Julie Brown has been drawn to makeup artistry from a very young age. She has parlayed this lifelong hobby into a career that spans from bridal makeup and runway fashion show to makeup for TV and film. An honours graduate from the renowned makeup school Blanche Macdonald, Julie loves to help women bring out their true beauty potential. Keeping Your Breasts Healthy By Shelly Lynn Nellis

hat does breast health mean to you? For most women, breast health means regular self-examination, checkups with a gynaecologist, and mammograms. Yet there is much more to breast health than early cancer detection. All women have the option of taking a proactive stance to ensure that their breasts remain healthy and youthful looking well into middle-age. Use the following approaches to protect and maintain the health of that most deep-seated symbol of your femininity: your breasts.
Nutrition and Exercise
Breasts are a natural part of the female human body, and as such, if a woman leads a healthy lifestyle, she can protect the health of her breasts along with the rest of her body. Leading a healthy lifestyle means eating organic whole foods that have not been treated with pesticides, herbicides or hormones. It means exercising at least three or four times per week, and avoiding toxins like nicotine and alcohol. It means maintaining a healthy weight to ensure optimal health. Women who are significantly overweight generally produce more of the hormone estrogen, and conventional medical knowledge links estrogen to breast cancer.
Avoiding Xenoestrogens
Breast cancer has been linked to substances in the environment called xenoestrogens. These xenoestrogens have the same impact as estrogen on the human body, and must be avoided wherever possible. Common sources of xenoestrogens include soft plastics, household cleaners, toiletries, pesticides, plastic bottles and heavy metals such as lead or mercury. It is prudent, therefore, to use ceramics or glass rather than plastics when cooking or storing food. Avoid microwaving food contained in plastic containers, and do not drink from plastic bottles. Opt for natural household cleaners and laundry detergents, and choose naturally made shampoos and soaps.
Massage
Regularly massaging the breasts can improve their overall health because massaging the breasts helps the lymph nodes to drain and improves blood circulation. Massage can also alleviate breast pain associated with PMS, and may even prevent breast lumps from forming.
Breastfeeding
If you give birth to a child, try to breastfeed for at least twelve months. Most pediatricians agree that breastfeeding is better for the child’s development than formula milk. What’s more, breastfeeding helps forge a closer bond between
mother and child. And according to research, it may also lower a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
Proper Support
Women who do regular cardiovascular exercise obviously care about their health and physical appearance. However, women who exercise without wearing a proper support bra could be doing their breasts more harm than good. When doing aerobic exercises like jogging or speed walking, your breasts tend to bounce. This bouncing can actually stretch the tissue of the breasts, which eventually makes them sag. That’s why all women should ensure they are wearing a supportive sports bra in the correct size before attempting any kind of aerobic exercise. It is also a good idea to wear a bra that fits well even when you’re sedentary.
Breast Skin

are considered a sign of youth, beauty and fertility. Yet all skin ages over time, and the breast area is particularly sensitive to sun damage. That’s why it’s worth using a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor before going outdoors during the warm-weather months. Also consider investing in a breast-firming cream. Retinol creams for the face can also do much to improve the appearance of breast skin.
Love Your Breasts
All women should love their breasts. Breasts are not just part of what makes a woman attractive. Since breasts are used by one generation to nourish the next, they are also a fundamental part of the cycle of life. Examine your breasts regularly, have regular screenings and endeavour to keep them healthy by adopting a preemptive standpoint. September is
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
O
varian cancer is the most fatal gynecologic cancer. Each year 2,600 Canadian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 70 percent do not survive five years. With greater awareness of the symptoms and earlier detection, survival rates for the disease could be as high as 90 percent. Each September, Ovarian Cancer Canada hosts their signature event, the Winners Walk of Hope. Ovarian Cancer Canada is the only national charity dedicated solely to overcoming ovarian cancer. Ovarian Cancer Canada provides support for women living with ovarian cancer and their families, raises awareness of the disease amongst the general public and health care professionals, and funds research to find a reliable early detection test, improved treatments and ultimately, a cure.
Ovarian cancer: What you need to know
Currently, there is no early detection test for ovarian cancer and, therefore, it is crucial for women to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease. Women who have one or more of the following symptoms that persist for three weeks should see their family doctor or health professional: • Swelling or bloating of the abdomen • Pelvic discomfort or heaviness • Back or abdominal pain • Fatigue • Gas, nausea, indigestion • Changes in bowel habits • Emptying your bladder frequently • Menstrual irregularities • Weight loss or weight gain We urge you to visit www.ovariancanada.org for additional information. Women with a family history of ovarian, breast or colorectal cancer, and those over the age of 49, may be at a higher risk of developing the disease.

ask the expert Question:
I’m interested in getting a facelift but not sure I want to go under the knife. My friend suggested a softlift, which I assume is a type of facelift. Can you expand on what exactly a softlift is?
Question:
Can I correct my crowded front teeth with crowns or veneers instead of braces? Chris Howey, Vancouver, BC
Samantha Crosby, Richmond BC
Answer:
Answer:
“SoftLift” is a combination of Botox and dermal fillers. The objective of the SoftLift is to restore volume to the face and relax overactive muscles, giving the face a more natural, youthful look.
Great question! We are seeing more and more adult patients inquiring about options to correct misaligned teeth.
The procedure can be highly effective without the pain, expense and risk of a surgical approach. As the face ages, the cheeks lose their plumpness and thicken around the smile lines. The lips thin and curve downward, jowls form, and the face begins to look tired. By lessening the frown in the forehead and mouth area, opening the eyes, and plumping the cheeks to elevate the lower face, your face is simply returning to its previous, younger appearance. Together, Botox and dermal filler gels can achieve the result of a more youthful, refreshed and relaxed face in one or two treatment sessions.

Minor discrepancies of crowding or spacing can be ‘masked’ well with veneers or crowns. The position of the roots is not altered, but the portion of the tooth above the gums is changed. The advantages are that the procedure is usually completed in two or three appointments over a few weeks improving the colour, shape and size of the teeth. The major disadvantage: teeth must be shaved down to place the crowns or veneers. These procedures do not last forever and will need to be replaced. There are more aesthetic orthodontic options than metal braces to consider such as Invisalign, porcelain brackets and tongue side braces. With braces, the actual misalignment is corrected without shaving off healthy tooth structure. The results can last a lifetime but take several months to years to complete. Discuss what meets your needs best with your dentist.

Named for its rocky bluff location, Rockwater is nestled in the serenity of coastal rain forest overlooking the ocean. With diverse accommodations from luxury tenthouse suites equipped with hydro-therapy tubs for two, to rustic, cozy cabins, there is something for everyone’s taste and pocket-book. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, reconnecting with friends, or simply seeking reflection and solitude, being surrounded by Mother Nature will have its soothing effect. Many guests return time after time, taking advantage of the variety of room styles. Women reunite each year with the Girlfriend’s Package and frequently stay in Lodge rooms (offering two double beds) while enjoying their inclusive spa, breakfast, and overdue catch-up time; then return with partners and stay in either the pet-friendly cabins or, for special occasions, a luxury tenthouse. Over the past five years Rockwater has evolved into a couples’ and friends’ resort during the off season and a dynamic wedding destination in high season. But it’s in the quiet season that guests look to rest and rejuvenate, so we have built and grown our packages around their specific needs. Romance is a
popular theme at Rockwater so we now offer an elopement and engagement package, as well as well as Celebration or Romance upgrades, which can turn any stay into a romantic one. Other packages being launched this fall and winter are painting, photography, writing and women’s retreats; which will include many talented artists and writers living here on the Sunshine Coast. And now our inclusive Fly & Stay package (thanks to Harbour Air) allows Vancouverites to hop on a seaplane from Coal Harbour to Sechelt, where our shuttle will pick you up. Rockwater Spa, inspired by nature and affectionately known as the little spa that could, offers a variety of healing massages in our ocean-side Spa Without Walls during summer and in our luxurious Winter Spa Tenthouse in cooler months. Imagine the scent and sounds of the ocean... or rain falling on canvas while the fireplace and heated slate floors radiate warmth. Seven Foods to Improve Your Mood Sometimes, it feels like you simply woke up on the wrong side of the bed. There may or may not be any one thing that is bothering you, but you are in a bad mood. When you need a pick-me-up to get yourself out of the dumps, try experimenting with the following proven mood enhancers.
By Shelly Lynn Nellis Turkey
When most people think of turkey, they imagine a large Thanksgiving dinner followed by a nice long nap. While tryptophan, a major component of turkey, may make you sleepy (especially if you’ve over-eaten), it mostly just relaxes people and can make their feelings of anxiety melt away.
Chocolate
Many people reach for a chocolate bar to comfort themselves when they are upset. However, it is not just the sweet flavour of chocolate that can improve a person’s mood. Chocolate also contains neurotransmitters that release endorphins in the brain that bring on a feeling of giddiness. It’s not your imagination; sometimes a bar of chocolate really does seem to fix everything.
Fresh berries
The natural sugars in fresh berries such as blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are great at giving a quick energy boost. However, the key to these fruits is their high fibre content that will help you sustain the energy boost for a longer period of time. These sweet treats are ultra-portable, so you can give yourself a quick pick-me-up at home, in the office, or anywhere around town.
Salmon
Salmon is a great mood-boosting food because it contains a large portion of the daily recommendation of selenium. When people do not get enough of this nutrient, it causes anxiety and unexplained irritability. Additionally, salmon is a great mood booster because it is high in essential fatty acids. These acids are commonly used as natural treatments for depression and anxiety.

Spinach
Spinach contains high amounts of folic acid. Typically, most people think of folic acid only as it relates to pregnancy, but it is a vital nutrient for everyone. When people do not get the daily recommendation of folic acid, they are more likely to feel depressed. Simply eating a side of cooked spinach can have substantial mood-boosting effects.
Eggs
Eggs are rich in protein, which can make you feel alert and energetic. If you are in a slump and feel discouraged about your lack of focus or productivity, try eating a serving of eggs for a quick boost.
Try getting carbohydrates from whole grain sources such as oatmeal or brown rice. These foods provide a steady release of sugar that will sustain your mood for a longer period.
Whole grains
Carbohydrates are feel-good foods because they increase blood sugar levels. However, carbohydrates that come from refined sources such as pasta or candy should not be used to enhance your mood because they will only cause a short-term spike in sugar levels and will leave you feeling fatigued later on. Instead, try getting carbohydrates from whole grain sources such as oatmeal or brown rice. These foods provide a steady release of sugar that will sustain your mood for a longer period. Having emotional ups and downs is a normal part of everyday life. However, just because you are feeling a little down does not always mean that you need a prescription for an anti-depressant. Simply eating the right foods can have a major impact on your mood and your overall health. Shelly Lynn Nellis has been active in the health and beauty industry for more than 20 years. Is “I’m Too Tired” the New “I’ve Got a Headache”? Today’s average couple is always on the go, struggling to get through each day stretched for time, overworked and tired. It’s no surprise that being tired gets in the way of having good sex on a regular basis – but not in the way you might think. By Dr. Trina Read
A
question I hear often from busy couples is, “How can we want sex when we’re always so tired?” My response to that? “Usually it’s not being tired that is preventing you from wanting sex.” An inevitable long and cold silence follows, then a brisk and defensive, “You don’t think being tired wreaks havoc on people’s sex lives?” And I tell them: “There’s a reason sleep is considered the new sex. I think exhaustion is very real and a big concern for couples. No doubt, there are many times when a couple is too tired to have sex. Generally though, being tired shouldn’t equate to a person’s motivation to have sex, or sexual desire.”
It all starts with a heartto-heart talk outside the bedroom, such as: “This is our extremely busy situation for the next six months. What can we do sexually and how can we stay connected even if we aren’t having as much sex as we’d like?”
What “I’m too tired” really means
The problem of pointing the finger of blame at fatigue is that it usually covers up for other things that have gone wrong in the bedroom: lack of communication, built up resentment, boring sex, and so on. It’s easier for a couple to sidestep arguments by not opening that Pandora’s box. Agreeing that they are too tired becomes an easy salve on a big wound. In fact, many men and women have confessed that saying “I’m too tired” has become a bad habit – they say it before they really think about whether they are or not. Not to rub salt in a lack-of-sex wound, but I know plenty of couples who have great sex lives – exhausted or not. In fact, they have more sex when they are tired because it’s their way of relaxing and feeling good, since sex can flood the brain with wonderful endorphins and oxytocin. Instead of focusing on a “symptom” of being exhausted, couples need to look at the big-
ger picture of how they are having sex. They also need to wrap their heads around creating more realistic expectations of what is doable for their present lifestyle and schedule. Sex, like everything else in life, has its ebbs and flows. Sometimes there will be periods of upheaval during which sex happens once a month. During calm periods, couples can have sex once a week (if that’s their frequency preference). Sometimes, albeit not often, they will look each other in the eyes and want rip each other’s clothes off. It all starts with a heart-to-heart talk outside the bedroom, such as: “This is our extremely busy situation for the next six months. What can we do sexually and how can we stay connected even if we aren’t having as much sex as we’d like?”

To schedule or not to schedule
If you’re truly in a busy period of your life, forcing the “sex once a week” formula will probably cause more harm than it will do good. Instead, focus on maintaining intimacy outside the bedroom: touching, kissing, being nice to each other. Or if you’re overwhelmed by the daily grind of life, scheduling sex might be the easiest way for a couple to keep their sex life on the radar. It may not seem romantic and a couple can often feel like failures because they can no longer have spontaneous sex; however, chances are if they don’t schedule, it’s not going to happen. The upside to scheduling is that it takes away any negative feelings of who is going to initiate sex and any walking around on eggshells wondering if “tonight is the night when I’ll have to have sex.” Research proves couples who schedule sex have more sex that is mutually satisfying. So the next time the words “I’m too tired” come out of your mouth as they relate to sex, think about how they are affecting your sex life overall. If you truly are too tired all the time, then maybe it’s time to get some balance in your life. After all, we can only hold our partner at arm’s length for so long before the relationship starts to suffer.

When to Splurge and How to Save on Beauty Products By Mariel Rittenhouse Goodson
Looking to fall-clean your beauty routine? Before you blow your budget on sky-high skincare and cosmetics, check out our expert-approved guide to products that are truly worth the splurge – and the items that can save you money. 1. Day Creams with Sunscreen: SAVE Even as daylight starts to wane, daily sun defence remains the cornerstone of healthy-looking skin. During the cooler months, Dr. Jason Rivers, a dermatologist at Pacific Dermaesthetics, suggests swapping chalky sunblock for a UV-filtering moisturizer. Whether you opt to stock up at the drugstore or a department store, make certain the label indicates broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and an SPF rating of 30+. Shopping list: Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer SPF 30 ($25, Well.ca)
5. Eye Shadow and Eyeliners: SPLURGE Unless you’re digging into a trendy tint – ahoy aquamarine! – pay up for powder eye shadows and you’ll be rewarded with rich, long-lasting pigment. Too-shimmery shadows often emphasize fine lines and crow’s-feet, so stick to silky, sparkle-free formulas. To line eyes, spring for a pricier pencil, which typically uses a softer wax that’s gentler on the delicate eyelid. Shopping list: Guerlain Ecrin 6 Couleurs ($90, Holt Renfrew), Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier ($30, Pircosmetics.com)
2. Anti-Aging Serums and Treatments: SPLURGE Pony up for targeted treatments containing collagen-building peptides like Matrixyl, blotch-busting vitamin C and wrinkle-fighting retinol. Dr. Rivers explains that premium products often contain higher concentrations of these efficacious age fighters. To ensure you’re getting your money’s worth, consult the ingredient list: “The higher the rank, the better,” he says. Shopping list: SkinCeuticals C.E. Ferulic ($145, Beautymark.ca)
6. Mascara: SAVE Because most mascaras rely on a near-identical blend of dye and wax, pay attention to the wand. Carmindy, the makeup artist on TLC’s What Not to Wear, eschews “football-size fat brushes, which get all over the skin” in favour of small bristles that can individually coat lashes. To further fight clumps, keep a tissue on hand to eliminate excess formula before applying. Shopping list: Maybelline Define-A-Lash ($9, Well.ca)
3. Night Creams and Eye Creams: SAVE Penny-pinch when it comes to these skincare workhorses since tolerability is the key. Dr. Rivers notes, “Paradoxically, it’s often the expensive products that cause irritation” because many are overloaded with exotic ingredients or fragrances to boost sensorial appeal. To suss out an all-purpose eye or night cream, scan the label for gentle humectant hydrators like glycerine or hyaluronic acid, and free-radical scavengers like vitamin E and caffeine. Shopping list: Alba Jasmine & Vitamin E Moisture Cream ($16, London Drugs), Garnier Nutritioniste Ultra-Lift Eye Cream ($20, Well.ca) 4. Foundation and Concealer: SPLURGE To give good face, Riku Campo, author of Best in Beauty, says you have to lay a flawless foundation. Campo remarks that prestige brands generally offer a broader spectrum of shades so you can better match your complexion. Plus, you can colour-test right at the cosmetic counter. He advises stowing a hand mirror to gauge the product’s true tone in natural light. Shopping list: Bobbi Brown Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation ($55, Holt Renfrew), Yves Saint Laurent Touché Éclat ($50, The Bay)

7. Lipsticks and Glosses: SAVE Unless your heart’s set on a specific hue, head to the drugstore to load up on lipsticks and glosses, which tend to require regular reapplication regardless of price. To keep your pucker party-ready, Campo suggests gently exfoliating lips with a soft toothbrush, then adding a dab of moisturiser, a puff of loose powder, and finally a swipe of your favourite “longwear” shade, like this fall’s wine-stained burgundy. Shopping list: Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick ($7, Well.ca), Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Lip Gloss ($10, Well.ca) 8. Blush, Bronzer and Powder: SPLURGE Dodge the dreaded pancake face with finely milled powder formulations. Since upmarket powders are usually more pigmented, you can apply with a lighter touch for more natural-looking coverage. Campo adds that inexpensive bronzers should be avoided because “most incorporate too much yellow and orange,” which can look garish. Instead, try a toasted brown bronzing powder – not a gel or cream – for skin that’s subtly sun-kissed. Shopping list: Yves Saint Laurent Blush Variation ($50, The Bay), Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons (US$74, Sephora.com), La Prairie Cellular Treatment Loose Powder ($100, Holt Renfrew).

Rosacea:
What Begins as Rosy Cheeks... Remedies for the 13 million rosacea sufferers across North America. By Sarah Meanchoff
Ah, that healthy glow of flushed cheeks. But wait just a moment... On closer inspection, what may masquerade as an excited flush or wind-chapped cheeks may in fact be rosacea. And though it may start as a mild flush, rosacea can easily escalate into problematic facial redness with visible bumps, pustules, and broken capillaries over the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. Rosacea is a chronic condition that typically worsens as time goes by, with the most severe cases resulting in ocular redness and rhinophyma, an abnormal growth of tissue on the nose.
O
ver 13 million North Americans suffer from rosacea, yet this alltoo-common ailment continues to be difficult to treat and poorly understood.
What causes rosacea?
The debate as to what causes rosacea ranges across a number of speculative hypotheses, but the one commonality is that the vast majority of rosacea sufferers have sensitive skin that reacts badly to most topical agents, like toners, sunscreens, astringents, medications, and some lotions. Most people with rosacea are also prone to flushing easily, leading experts to deduce that a vascular element is one of the causes of rosacea. And then there are the bacterium. A particular bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract called H. pylori is a possible cause of rosacea be-
36 36
|
cause it is linked to a hormone produced in the stomach that causes skin flushing. This same bacteria is thought to cause stomach ulcers. Demodex is a mite that is found in the follicles of about fifty percent of rosacea sufferers. The role of these mites and their relation to rosacea is under investigation by scientists. Other factors that cause rosacea to flare up include heat, cold, wind, sun, spicy foods, hot drinks, alcohol, exercise, some medications, and some makeup. So if you are an active person who likes to go outdoors, get plenty of exercise in the fresh air, then come home to a nice steaming cup of tea or perhaps a glass of wine, what can you do about your rosacea without affecting your lifestyle?
Rosacea treatment options
Results from rosacea treatment options vary, and many sufferers have a great deal of trouble trying to treat their problem. Your best bet is to consult a dermatologist who is knowledgeable about this affliction and who has had success treating rosacea patients in the past. Depending on the type and the extent of your rosacea, your dermatologist will likely prescribe a topical agent to address the problem with ingredients such as azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinoid, sulfacetamide, sulfur lotions, or topical antibiotics such as clindamycin, erythromycin, and metronidazole. Oral antibiotics may also be prescribed, though they have not been conclusively proven effective for rosacea. However, when they do work, they take effect much faster than their topical counterparts, which can take multiple months to have any effect – and can worsen your condition in the meantime. Many cases of rosacea do not respond well to topical treatments, and sensitive skin can become inflamed with prolonged use of topical medications. Of course, there are well-known drawbacks to prolonged use of oral antibiotics as well. Alternative treatments for rosacea include creams that contain an extract of the herb chrysanthellum indicum, green tea, licorice, or niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3. Ingestion of apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy for rosacea, but can result in esophageal injury. Other soothing remedies include aloe, fresh cucumber, chamomile, selenium, and zinc. As skin type and sensitivities vary widely, you will need to test these treatments for yourself to find what works for you. Another option that has gained popularity in recent years is the use of laser therapy in the treatment of rosacea. Laser therapy is considered a method of managing the symptoms of rosacea rather than eradicating the affliction altogether. As with most rosacea treatments, it will likely

be an ongoing endeavour. Laser therapies, including intense pulsed light (IPL) and vascular therapies, can effectively reduce facial redness and eliminate broken blood vessels. IPL differs from traditional laser therapies in that IPL emits light in a wide spectrum, whereas lasers emit one wavelength of intense light. Rosacea experts and sufferers seem to agree that IPL is the more effective option. The drawback, of course, is that ongoing treatments can become very expensive, with individual treatments costing from $300 to $500 or more.
Living with rosacea
If the treatments you decide to try aggravate your condition, worsen it, or simply don’t help much at all, there are other options to help you live with your condition. For starters, switch all your makeup, cleansers, and lotions to sensitive skin formulations or those made specifically for rosacea sufferers. Try to avoid things that inflame your skin – like hot baths, hot tubs, skiing, etc. Test out what happens if you avoid alcohol for a week. Then try a week of no hot beverages (if you can live without coffee for that long!). Be good to your body and monitor how your body responds. If you want to try covering the problem, look for makeup products that include a green tint as a redness covering foundation. Usually you will use another product on top of a redness product. The multiple layers of makeup may again exacerbate your problem, but this can be a good temporary solution for important events or a big night out. Educating yourself about your options and forming a good relationship with a qualified dermatologist will put you on the path to finding a solution that works for you, though there may be a fair amount of trial and error along the way.
Secrets of
Healthy,Beautiful, Easy-to-manage Hair By Tomo Kikuchi
N
ew guests consistently tell me that their ultimate goal is to have beautiful, healthy and manageable hair – or in other words, no more bad-hair days. There are several causes of damaged, hardto-manage hair. Often hair problems are caused by poor technical work (colour, highlights, perms or straightening), or from damage caused by prolonged exposure to sun, sea or chlorinated water. Damage from thermal styling (blow-dryers, flat irons and curling irons) is another major factor for hair damage. Sometimes correcting the problem can be as simple as giving clients a good haircut or guiding them to shampoos, conditioners and styling products that are designed for their hair type or scalp condition. There are very real differences between professional hair-care products and mass-market products. Professional products are pH balanced for your hair and use a surfactant (cleansing agent) that is mild, while almost all mass market products have a pH level that is too high, so the cuticle of the hair is left open, and most use sodium lauryl sulfate – a very harsh, inexpensive cleansing agent. The result is dry, unmanageable hair. If you are experiencing premature colour fading, check your shampoo. Chances are your shampoo’s pH level is too high and the cleansing agent too harsh. Even if clients have been using professional products, they may be products that are not ideal matches for their hair type or scalp condition. Today’s products are hair type and scalp condition specific, so always ask your hairdresser which products you should be using. Now we also have a wide variety of in-salon treatments that can work wonders on dry, damaged hair. Admittedly, there are some levels of severe damage that can’t be completely fixed in one appointment. If you fall into that category, work with your hairdresser to develop a plan to get your hair healthy. Seasonal changes can cause some short-term scalp problems including dandruff. These are common and most salons have products that can help you with this. Hair loss is another issue that can affect hair quality and appearance. Some hair loss is normal; the average person loses 80 to 100 hairs per day. If you are experiencing more severe hair loss, it may be caused by Androgenic Alopecia, heredity, hormone problems, age, stress, medical conditions or medication. If you believe that you fall into this latter group you should seek a physician’s help. For the majority of people, there are plenty of things you can do to protect, nourish and enjoy your hair. Below are the top ten secrets of beautiful hair:
2. Work with your hairdresser to determine the shampoo and conditioner best suited to your hair and scalp and avoid washing your hair every day. Shampooing every third day is ideal for most people as the natural oil that your scalp produces is nature’s way to condition your hair.
1. Trim your hair at least every six to eight weeks (more often if your hair is short). Damage to your hair is usually from the ends and the only longterm solution to split ends is to remove them. Also, hairs grow at different rates, so haircuts will keep your hair healthy and your style balanced.

3. When shampooing your hair at home, massage your scalp gently to boost your circulation and improve overall hair health. Use cooler water, which will keep your hair’s cuticle closed. 4. Let your hair dry naturally when possible and rather than rubbing your hair dry; blot your hair to remove most of the water. 5. If you have longer hair use a wide-tooth comb to gently comb out any tangles and never use a brush on wet hair. 6. Avoid using hair-dryers, flat irons or curling irons when possible and always use a thermal protectant when you do use these tools. 7. If you use a round brush to style your hair, a natural boar bristle brush is best and it will help straighten your hair and add shine. 8. Use styling products designed for your hair type to address your needs. Your hairdresser can help you with this. 9. Avoid heat and prolonged exposure to sunlight, sea water or swimming pools, as each is harmful to your hair. If you are regularly in the sun or the pool, use protective products prior to each. 10. You don’t need to avoid hair colour or highlights, but have your hair coloured by specialists to give you the look you desire without unduly damaging your hair. Many of today’s colour products include conditioning elements and we now even have an ammonia-free colour line in INOA from L’Oreal Professional. Above all, find a stylist you trust and check in regularly to have your hair trimmed and to discuss your changing needs. And enjoy your beautiful hair!

Posture Perfect:
Rebuild Your Body After Illness By Dr. Christian Guenette
W
hen it comes time to rehabilitate after an injury, or to re-build muscle mass after a serious illness, it is important to keep one factor in mind at all times: posture. Posture may be defined as the relative position of your body – considering both the position of one body part relative to the other, and also the carriage of the body as a whole, particularly as it relates to gravity. There is a position of the body – perfect posture – where zero muscle energy is required to maintain that posture. So, when you are thinking about working on your posture, remember the end result should feel easier, not harder, to hold. An alternate definition of posture involves a mental or spiritual attitude. When you take a positive posture relative to life, it may also be said that a certain state of ease exists.
Why is body alignment so important?
Most people think about posture or alignment only as it relates to low back or neck pain. However, alignment in the body is very important for a number of physiological systems. Actions such as breathing, pumping blood through the body and digesting food properly are all dependent upon proper alignment, which allows these systems to function at their best. For instance, when you sit or stand in a perfect upright position, your chest naturally elevates, your ribcage expands, and there is more room for lung expansion, both horizontally and vertically. If you slump over in a sitting position, your spine is more curved, pressing your ribcage down into your abdomen. With increased compression, the diaphragm must perform its natural functions against resistance, making it less likely that you will take full, deep breaths. As a result, every tissue of the body will be partially deprived of life-giving oxygen! In addition, a slumped position will compress the abdominal contents, making it more difficult for food materials to move freely through your digestive system. Who knew sitting upright could be so important? But wait. That’s not all – good posture makes you look good, too. If you were to see two
that, you will be actively contracting a number of muscles to hold that position, which can not only be tiring, but it can cause an unnatural stress on the joints of your upper back and neck. Instead, imagine a string running from the tip of your tailbone to the top of your head – and then imagine stretching it out a bit. This will more naturally re-position your body into a better posture, and with less physical effort. If you feel too stiff or rigid in this position, you’ve gone too far. For sitting posture, it is recommended to correctly position the pelvis first. Start by holding onto the arm rests of your chair. Then, place your buttocks against the backrest, and slide your bum down into the seat. If you do this, the pelvis will assume the proper position, maintaining the natural curvature of the lower lumbar spine. Once this is established, the rest of the spinal curves tend to follow, making it easier for the body to hold a sitting position with fewer muscular contractions. people side by side, one with good posture, and the other with poor posture, what would you notice? Not only would you admire the broad shoulders of a man or the natural curves of a woman, but you would also relate those physical attributes with important personality traits. Science proves that body language is important. When someone stands upright with good posture, their body language suggests that they have a higher level of self-confidence. And it’s true. In a recent study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, college students who were asked to fill out self-evaluating questionnaires while sitting in a perfect postural position were significantly more likely to express a more confident attitude about their responses than a similar group holding a “slumped” posture while filling out the same questionnaires.
A Mother’s Mantra
Mom was right – it is important to stand and sit up straight. But where should we start if we are looking to improve our posture? For standing posture, the simplest and most effective rule of thumb is to always carry yourself as if you were slightly taller. Don’t just pull your head and shoulders back. If you do

Need help?
If you have been out of shape relative to your posture for months or even years, your body will have adapted to this position, making it more difficult to change. Muscles may be chronically lengthened or weakened, and your joints could be compressed, restricted or misaligned. If your intention is to improve your posture, consider visiting your local chiropractor first. He or she will perform a thorough assessment of your postural needs, and provide the best advice for helping to correct it. You may also need a few adjustments to get you started in the right direction. Then, once you start moving better, a consultation with an exercise specialist or physiotherapist can provide you with the strength and flexibility exercises that can help keep you there. Remember: your posture says a lot about you. Make sure it sends the right message. The Buddha’s Therapy:
Thai Massage
Maybe you have heard of it or even had the opportunity to try it while on holiday. Maybe you’ve always wondered about it, but felt unsure about whether it was right for you... “It” is Thai massage, and it is a truly unique experience. By Neata Auttapong
T
raditional Thai massage is an ancient practice that has been gaining in popularity in the western world over the past decade. Known in Thailand as “Nuad Boran” or “the ancient-manner massage,” this age-old technique involves a combination of stretching and deep tissue massage, with plenty of emphasis on pressure points. Legend has it that the technique was developed by the Buddha’s personal physician over 2,500 years ago! As the western world adopts this highly effective form of massage, we see it being renamed as “Thai yoga massage” or “lazy man’s yoga” due to the striking resemblance between traditional Thai massage and many standard yoga positions. The therapist uses his or her body to move you into a series of deep stretches and poses. What ensues is a practiced rhythm of stretching and pressing over the entire body, which in the most traditional methods includes your fingers, toes, knuckles, and ears; the “cobra” stretch, in which your torso is stretched up and back from your body; and sometimes even walking on your back! The practice requires great accuracy and precision, and a Thai massage therapist is highly trained in the art and principles of the technique. You will be given loose cotton pyjamas to wear as you lie on a comfortable table or mat. Traditionally, many people occupy the same room for Thai massage. (In Thailand’s tourist areas, you can easily find a Thai massage right on the beach!) There are no oils involved in Thai massage – which is why you can wear loose clothing while it is done. Thai Massage has an incredible balancing effect that differentiates it from other styles of massage. Combining stretching with pressure point work along the energy channels of the body, freed up pathways allow “room for movement” of stresses both physical and psychological. Mental awareness, clarity, pain management, increased circulation of blood

and lymph as well as changes in flexibility are commonly experienced after a Thai massage. You will feel energized, refreshed, and relaxed yet alert following your massage experience; centered in both mind and body. The technique is based on the principles of “lom” (air) and “sen” (vessels), with the belief that once air has entered the body via the lungs, it must travel through the body along 72,000 “sen” pathways or vessels. A Thai massage therapist will manipulate the major sen lines by targeting specific pressure points, most of which reach from the navel to the body’s orifices. The Thai use of “sen” and “lom” is often confused with Chinese medicine’s “meridians” and energy, when in fact the two systems are dissimilar. A standard Thai massage is typically between one and two hours long, though western spas offer a number of variations (antistress; athlete’s; deep tissue) as well as Thai fusion options. Like many professions, not all practitioners and establishments have the same standards of practice. Be sure to find a reputable therapist, spa or clinic before you decide to try Thai massage for yourself.
Neata Auttapong grew up in Thailand, where Thai healing and herbal traditions were part of everyday life. Abdominoplasty Each week, women come into my office for consultations concerning their mid-section. Ranging in age from their 30s to 50s, these women tell me they are ready for a “Mommy Makeover.” There are a variety of surgical options available to reclaim your feminine physique after pregnancy. Abdominoplasty is one of the most common surgeries performed on post-natal women. By Dr. Nick Carr What is Abdominoplasty?
An abdominoplasty (or “tummy tuck”) is a cosmetic surgery performed under general anaesthesia that removes excess skin and fatty tissue while tightening your abdominal muscles to achieve a flatter stomach. Stretch marks and c-section scars can also be removed, and every attempt is made to keep the incisions discreetly concealed along the undergarment line. The length of the incision is dependent on the amount of skin that needs to be removed.
Who is a Good Candidate?
An abdominoplasty is effective in removing excess fat and excess skin, or for repair of muscles separated by pregnancy. The type of abdominoplasty most suitable will depend on which of these problems is of most concern. Although this procedure is not limited to post-natal bodies, it is most commonly requested by mothers (especially after multiple births) due to the stretching of the abdominal skin and muscles during pregnancy, which often cannot return to their normal state without surgical intervention regardless of how many hours are spent at the gym. However, for those self-conscious of skin permanently stretched due to weight loss or lower abdominal surgery, this procedure may be for you.
Common Questions
One of the most commonly asked questions I receive is whether it is okay to have children
after an abdominoplasty. As many women are unsure when they want to stop having children, some will choose to have a tummy tuck when they feel they are ready. However, it is important to note that when a woman becomes pregnant after a tummy tuck, the abdominal area re-stretches and loosens the muscles that were tightened through the initial surgery. A subsequent surgery will then be required to achieve the desired results. Generally speaking, although it is safe to have this surgery before you have finished your pregnancies, it is recommended to undergo all your pregnancies first in order to attain the best surgical outcome. Another question I receive is whether more than one surgery can be performed on the same day. Tummy tucks are often combined with liposuction to remove excess fat in other areas that are difficult to slim down with exercise. Adding liposuction to your procedure can result in a more sculpted appearance and smoother body contour. Skinworks believes strongly in the powerful combination of liposuction as a routine part of abdominoplasty to achieve the most aesthetic pleasing result. Typical areas for liposuction include the “love handles,” thighs and buttocks. Some women will also choose to have a breast lift or augmentation to restore their breasts to a more comfortable shape, size and position. Skinworks offers a variety of safe, natural looking implants of different shapes (round and teardrop), sizes and textures to restore fullness and shape to the breasts.

What to Expect After Surgery
Some abdominoplasty patients choose to stay overnight at our facility, although most patients will be able to safely go home the same day. You can expect to have some bruising and discomfort for the first seven to ten days, and will be required to wear an inconspicuous compression garment under your clothing for several weeks to help control swelling. You will also receive post-operative care instructions for your incisions, including the use of silicone, which can greatly minimize the appearance of scars when used appropriately. You should schedule time off work for two to three weeks, and do no heavy lifting for six weeks. Although the surgical results are immediate, it will take approximately one year for the final aesthetic result.
Dr. Nick Carr has been in clinical practice in Vancouver since 1990 and is currently the Head of Plastic Surgery at UBC. His priority is to maintain his education and skills at the highest standards, and he has successfully treated thousands of patients. Dr. Carr treats each patient as an individual, offering the best of plastic surgery technology combined with his own experience as to what really works and what is most appropriate for them. He takes the time to educate patients on all surgical options to ensure a rewarding experience and the best possible aesthetic results for all patients. Thyroid Gland
At the Centre of a Life-changing Debate: Part 2 By Professor Franco Cavaleri
T
hyroid insufficiency might be one of the most controversial epidemics to sweep our nation. As our first-world technological advancements intrude upon the activity of the thyroid and slow the pace of the individual’s metabolism, the pace of humanity can become limited as the problem becomes a pandemic affecting the masses. Thyroid insufficiency impedes mental, emotional and physical ability. It prevents each cell, each tissue, each organ and each human from reaching its potential. Can this pandemic reset our biological clock and evolutionary pace enough to actually slow the human race? The philosophical ramifications make for an interesting discussion, but let’s focus on the intimate health implications for each of us. Then we’ll discuss how we can take immediate and personal action to compensate for the common thyroid challenge.
Your Controversial TSH Levels
The thyroid and TSH controversy is a manmade phenomenon that affects more of us than once thought. As the medical debate evolves, you may not want to stand by waiting for the outcome while coffee, caffeine and even ephedrine intake ramp up to play a bigger and bigger crutch in your life as compensation. The thyroid may very well be the factor that is driving our North American epidemic rates of obesity and depression. Taking charge of this health issue could be the biggest life change you’ll make for yourself in your adult years. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is the common marker used to identify or measure thyroid function by your medical practitioner. Endocrinologists have established a reference range for TSH levels in the body. This range (0.5 – 5.0 uU/ml) is determined to be the healthy normal value for the population. Values lower than 0.5 indicate hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and values greater than 5.0 are indicative of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid, which is more common). The controversy stems from the fact that the range was established based on population mean – a population that has been grossly influenced by the fluoride, chloride and other environmental,
dietary and lifestyle unknowns that could cause TSH to be higher than the healthy normal uninterrupted range. In other words, a TSH result of 5 uU/ml may not have you diagnosed with a hypothyroid condition by current standards, yet this could be a marginal insufficiency that has a monumental impact on your life. Researchers are moving to consider a narrower range reflecting what is believed to be the healthy thyroid activity of young adults. The corrected range is expected to be 0.3-3.0 uU/ ml TSH. If you’ve been tested before and have not been diagnosed, your test today might be interpreted differently and you’d get the help you need to put a youthful spring back into your step. The symptoms of mild and advanced hypothyroidism can include some or all of the following: fatigue, weight gain, lack of drive, irritability, memory loss, constipation, decreased libido, mind fog, limb and muscle aches, joint pain, coarse brittle hair, hair loss, general weakness, immune system sluggishness and weakness, dry skin and even vision impairment in advanced stages. It leaves one grasping for energy spikes from coffee and other stimulants just to feel “with it.” Since energy is low, the cells of the body strive to attain energy, creating an insatiable desire for carbohydrate- and calorierich foods. This vastly compounds the problem. We may also crave salt, possibly for its iodine content, which is an important element for thyroxin production by the thyroid gland. If your recent need for eye glasses coincides with any number of the above symptoms, check for thyroid insufficiency and don’t settle for the common T4 (thyroxine) treatment. While scientists are re-evaluating the TSH scale, this investigative work has revealed that there’s much more to thyroid therapy than just basic T4 (thyroxine) administration.
What to Look For in Thyroid Therapies
There are different forms of thyroxin circulating in the body. T4 is the main thyroxin form that serves as a pool of the hormone that the body converts into T3 – the more potent, faster
46
|
fresh vancouver Issue 3
acting form. The thyroid gland itself produces T4 and some T3. The small T3 output serves as that immediate signalling for the cells while the T4 is a back up, slow-release source. Typical thyroid therapies involve the administration of T4 to build the pool of that slow-release form. It can take several weeks to take effect. However, a positive result is dependent on effective conversion of T4 to T3 as well – most of which takes place in the liver. Interestingly, the metabolic activity of the liver is regulated by thyroxin as well and the organ’s conversion of T4 to T3 might, itself, be compromised by a long-term shortage of thyroxin preceding the therapy. T4 administration on its own might not be enough to get the metabolic ball rolling in the right direction and at the right pace. T3 reference ranges are now being re-evaluated as well because it appears that different people require and respond to a wide range of T3 doses, making a one-size reference range and treatment for T3 difficult to establish. This might be caused by receptor sites of T3 being desensitized in the body as we age; as cells become less sensitive to the hormone signal, more might be needed to get the job done. If the thyroid gland is not producing T4, it is likely not producing T3 either, so the common T4 drug may fall short of delivering the result you need. The more appropriate solution might be a combination therapy that includes both T3 and T4 at the same time to emulate what the healthy and fully functional thyroid gland is meant to do. Your health care practitioner can help you define these needs. If you’ve been tested but not diagnosed with a thyroid insufficiency, ask to see your test results to determine which TSH reference range is being used and consider that 0.3-3.0 TSH could very well become the new range based on recent research. This might finally help you identify the cause of your metabolic insufficiency with greater accuracy. It might explain why energy is deficient, mental drive isn’t what it was, and why that extra weight just keeps piling on despite your escalating exercise and calorie restriction. Depression may stem from these underlying issues as well.
Re-evaluating Your Thyroid Condition
Thyroid insufficiencies can also be accompanied by swollen lymph glands as a function of the immune system engagement. The use of the steroid sex hormones is now known to interfere with thyroid and thyroxin activity. This includes birth control drugs, performance testosterone analogues, and many forms of hormone replacement therapy. Interestingly, the common methods of treating autoimmunity can also lead to thyroid insufficiency as a secondary disease. Extended use of corticosteroids, like Prednisone, has been linked to thyroid insufficiency. And these anti-inflammatory, immune bending steroid drugs are prescribed prolifically to treat all kinds of chronic inflammation from skin disease, allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmunity and more. With so many causes and so many contributors to thyroid interference and a North American population that’s careening towards a senior majority, it’s no wonder that obesity, depression and chronic fatigue are prolific in our new world. Every one of us has been exposed to many of these thyroid intrusions. Without a finite clinical diagnosis many suffering from marginal thyroid insufficiency are incorrectly diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or other conditions related to metabolic insufficiency. Many just struggle with fluctuating body weight, lack of drive and depression. Push your health care provider for thorough testing and proper therapy using both forms of the thyroid treatment: T4 and T3. In addition to these pharmaceutical supports, natural compounds can be utilized as complementary treatment: thyroid glandular (usually porcine source) can be used as a supply of both thyroxin hormone forms but these are not consistently standardized sources of the hormones. Iodine (5 mg/day) sources (like seaweed) and tyrosine supplementation (2000 mg/day) also serve very well. Supplementing with a good vitamin B complex (with 100 mg B6) provides support for thyroxin production from iodine since B6 is a cofactor and iodine a critical component. But don’t settle for the natural alternatives if they are not working to alleviate the symptoms on their own. A completely effective thyroid therapy is life-changing on many levels. This might require the use of the pharmaceutical cocktail; it might require a complementary (thyroxin + nutraceutical) program; it should include a lifestyle change as well. Evaluate your diet and environment to eliminate sources of toxicity and regularly cleanse and detoxify to eliminate toxins that have settled within your cells. Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fibres, and supplement this antioxidant intake to increase the body’s antioxidant load. Antioxidants are pow-
erful neutralizers of free radicals and the toxicity they create. Try the different thyroid therapies described to find what works for you and change lifestyle at the same time the therapy is administered. They’ll support each other, making the lifestyle change easier to commit to and stay with. Your health is in your hands; it’s up to you to push through the metabolic and mental sludge created by hypothyroidism to clear a path to smoother sailing and greater life potential.

Top Ten Reasons to Hire a Personal Fitness Trainer By Della Vorshuk
D
o you want to be happy, healthy, and functionally fit well into your coming years? Are you noticing that it’s increasingly challenging to find the motivation to stay physically active? The good news: you don’t have to do it alone. A qualified personal trainer can help you achieve your goals in more ways than you may have considered! Below are my top ten reasons why every person should hire a personal fitness trainer.
6. Learn life-long skills
The role of a personal trainer is to provide you with the right knowledge, resources, guidance, training and skills so that you can do “it” for yourself! He or she is there to support you as you work towards enhancing the quality of your life now and in the future. Let your trainer guide you and teach you how to be your own personal trainer!
7. Put the “personal” in your training
Ignorance and poor execution are common catalysts for injury. A knowledgeable personal trainer will improve your exercise execution and skill so that you reduce your risk for injury and get the most out of each activity.
A skilled trainer will assess your specific needs, injuries, health conditions or training goals (that 10km race you’re dreaming about, for example). The trainer will then develop a personalized plan with clear timelines and short-term achievement goals that will safely and effectively enable you to succeed.
2. Personal trainers are inexpensive
8. Learn effective and efficient techniques
1. Reduce injury risk
It’s true! Most trainers will charge between $60 and $80 per session and many offer discounts if you buy a package of sessions. And what’s this worth to you? Let’s say you purchase a four-session package at $70 per hour, which amounts to $280. Say you do one session per week, so your package is good for one month. Now, add up your luxury “feel good” monthly expenses for items such as clothes, shoes, cigarettes, dinners, alcohol, entertainment, etc. Is it more than $280? Most likely! Try cutting down a little (not completely) on some of these expenses and put some of your savings towards your health and future!
3. Long-term guidance and motivation
As we age, it gets harder to stay motivated towards exercise, so having a trainer guide and motivate you can keep you going. Certified personal trainers can provide structure and do the thinking for you so you can focus on the “doing” rather than the planning. Initially, you may need to see your trainer more often to get on the right track; however, once you have learned what to do and how to do it, you can spread your sessions out to every three to four weeks. Consider these sessions your “review, revise and revitalize” check-ups.
4. Accountability
Your personal fitness trainer is there, waiting for you to show up. You can’t find excuses not to go to the gym when someone is expecting you! Plus, your trainer reminds you of your reasons for wanting to exercise, and helps you understand why it’s so important even when you feel as though you could talk yourself out of it!
5. Variety and creativity
Trainers are professionals who are well versed in making exercise “fun” and more interesting by offering a wide variety of creative exercises. Too many of us get bored with our gym routines and start finding reasons not to go. Keep it interesting!

Spending too much time at the gym with not enough results? Personal trainers can save you plenty of time and energy wasted doing inefficient workouts. They show you how to maximize your efforts and your results.
9. Lose stubborn fat
It can become increasingly challenging to lose fat as we age. Why? Four main reasons: loss of calorie burning muscle tissue, increase in caloric intake, decreased activity levels, and changes in hormone balance. A trainer can help you build and maintain muscle mass, increase caloric expenditure and refer you to the proper specialists to address any medical issues such as hormonal imbalances that may be impeding your success.
10. A trainer is a great resource
A good trainer usually has a network of other specialists in the areas of nutrition, naturopathic medicine, massage, and more. Your trainer can refer you to the right specialists for all your non-exercise health needs. There is little any physician, personal trainer or pill can do for you, other than what you can do for yourself. Being willing to make real longterm changes in your life is an inside job. Hiring a qualified trainer, even temporarily, can set the stage for a healthier, happier and more functionally active future. We all want to be healthy and happy well into our senior years. Why not let a qualified personal trainer get you started in the right direction and spark your internal drive to continue your health and fitness program on your own with “revitalizing” check-ups every three to four weeks. After all, while our top ten reasons to hire a trainer are important, the number-one reason will always be your health and vitality!
