arly in March, Fresh Vancouver had the opportunity to sponsor the Glam Gala Give benefit presented by Ovarian Cancer Canada. My staff and I attended the hugely successful benefit that raised a total of $110,000 for ovarian cancer. In a room filled with inspirational women and incredible stories of strength and survival, we were thrilled to note the number of women present who have graced the covers and pages of Fresh, including Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts, Pamela Martin, Erin Cebula and Dawn Chubai, all of whom took part in a fashion show to highlight the designs of yet another Fresh alumnus, Vancouver designer Malene Grotrian.

Events like this are an important reminder of the power of solidarity, the need to support each other in life’s trials and tribulations while also taking care of ourselves. It got us thinking about our health, and about the aging process. What is aging, and how do we define “anti-aging”?

E

ven the word “stress” can cause us to furrow our brows and tense those shoulder muscles... Are you doing it now? Relax. Fresh Vancouver hit the streets to ask local women how they manage their

stress levels.

Yes, many of them mentioned putting a little Baileys in their morning coffee, or having lowered expectations and bigger glasses of wine! But the truth of day-to-day stress is that it is relentless, and stress management requires much more determination than a quick-fix method can address. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy your Friday night glass of wine (or tea, or your bubble bath)! What it does mean is that you need a strategy to help you manage your stress on an ongoing basis.

In North America, more than half of us are concerned about the level of stress in our everyday lives. Long-term exposure to stress has been linked to serious health problems, including pain, heart disease, depression, digestive problems, sleep problems, obesity, autoimmune diseases and skin conditions.

Take a deep breath and settle into your chair. Share in the wisdom of other women who manage their stress in simple, realistic ways.

From list-making to vacationing and going for a run, these tips are sure to help ease your load.

Managing stress is an art in my world with a five-year-old, high-energy little boy. You would think it would involve having massages or pedicures, but what enables me to manage my stress is knowing that my laundry is done, my bathrooms are clean and my groceries are purchased. I make lists every day, first thing in the morning, and cross things off as I go. It gives me a sense of control in a crazy week that’s out of control. But taking time for me and my physical health is key as well. I ensure that I get my running in at least three times per week. It’s so important that you make time to take care of yourself. Exercise is key to managing my stress; otherwise, I sink into a depression and feel overwhelmed with everything and anything.

We take a few family vacations every year, so we always have something to look forward to.

I work one extra night a week and this is our vacation fund. I am constantly looking for deals and we stay open to “other options” when we plan time away. I find the stress of dining out with young children not worth the effort or cost, so I look for great places with cooking facilities. I can take two or three one-week vacations for the cost of the average family’s single yearly vacation. These vacations are a sure-fire

I am delighted to note that even the word “stress” has far less impact on my life than ever before. As I compare my life today to 20 years ago, I recognize that perhaps the most significant difference is the fact that I now have a choice in what I do, and how and when I do it.

Having that choice reduces the pressure. Slowing down, considering options and recognizing that the world will continue very well without my orchestrating its every move is a learned response. This learning comes through experience (another way of saying “aging”). I relish the opportunity to live my days with a balance of responsibility and pleasure. It was not always this way. Work and responsibility ruled me – because I let them. I have learned to do things differently now. I am so grateful for that.

I firmly believe that stress can kill you. There are so many ways out there to control it, but what has worked best for me and my family is to consistently maintain our Body, Mind, and Soul in balance. To achieve this, we practice daily meditation and we exercise regularly with

infrared mild hot yoga and a combination of endurance, strength, cardio class and dance.

Most important, we eat a healthy diet that matches our metabolism and blood type, and we include as many raw vegetables and fruits as possible to get 100 percent nutrition, which allows us to have more level energy and naturally detoxify the body. We also choose to live in the “present moment” each step of our journey.

I am finally realizing that the way I handle stress is becoming more of a serious issue as I age. In my 30s and 40s, I could eat as much chocolate and peanut butter as I wanted and would find an instant relief to my misery. Now, when I take that approach, I end up causing myself more

grief as the added calories go straight to my hips! Keeping a consistent running and exercise schedule is honestly the best stress reliever there is for me.

A big part of my stress management is talking things through. Having a trustworthy source to “vent” my stress to is key for me. Usually, talking it out releases much of the stress I created about the situation in the first place and puts things in perspective.

I try to tackle problems as they arise. Problems can be about health issues such as weight or insomnia, conflict in personal relationships,

money or time management. I can tell when one of these issues is creating too much anxiety in my life, and I deal with the problem as well as I am able. Then I let it go. I have learned to finish one thing before starting another whenever possible. Multitasking is for the young. I trust my own judgement and use it. It’s gotten me this far, so there must be something about it that works! And it’s okay to be wrong sometimes. I work out three times a week, do yoga twice a week, and walk at least half an hour every day. Things have a way of working out when I feel good. Stress is more fun when it’s getting me somewhere I really want to go, so I try to do what I am passionate about. And I try to be thankful. At my age, I am hugely grateful for my health and the people I truly care for.

ore than ever in today’s fast-paced world, we are surrounded by demands that continually require our energy and attention. Work, family, deadlines, to-do lists, maintaining our health and multitasking all push our bodies to keep up.

The ovaries, thyroid and adrenal gland play an important parts in maintaining energy and vitality throughout our lives. This is particularly true at menopause, when our bodies are changing and our cells are aging. During this time, a woman’s ovaries decline in function and the changing levels of hormones can wreak havoc on her system. The many hormones in our bodies work together like a finely tuned symphony, regulating everything from reproduction to emotions and well-being. An imbalance or decline in the sex hormones (estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone), as in peri-menopause or menopause, puts a “stress” on the system and, along with other hormone imbalances, can lead to an inability of the body to function optimally. Symptoms may include fatigue, disrupted sleep, anxiety, depression, feeling overwhelmed, hot flashes, reduced tolerance for stress, bloating, and weight gain.

It is important to remember that there are many factors that can cause low energy at menopause. Deficiency of any of the major hormones such as estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, DHEA, and cortisol can contribute to symptoms of fatigue, low energy, and decreased vitality. Other common causes include low iron, depression, sleep deprivation and chronic diseases. Stress, suboptimal nutrition, inadequate exercise, and poor lifestyle choices also affect the functioning and balance of key hormones.

The good news is there are options available to help optimize your hormone health.

Lifestyle changes as well as comprehensive assessment and treatment from qualified health professionals can restore vitality at any age.

How to Optimize Your Energy Balance your hormones: Hormone imbalance itself is a stress on the body. Balancing your hormone levels will help optimize the function of the adrenal, thyroid and other glands. See a physician to have an assessment.

Monitor your stress levels: You can’t eliminate stress from your life, but you can change how you react to it by “re-framing” the situation so that you see a different perspective. Practice forgiveness, non-judgmental awareness, and just letting go. If this is hard to do on your own, get professional help.

Learn the relaxation response: This is a simple breathing exercise that can be done anytime, anywhere. The deep calm breathing will slow your heart beat, lower your blood pressure, and relax your muscles, neutralizing your body’s physical and emotional response to stress. This will often energize you and provide some relief for hot flashes and mood swings.

Restore your sleep: Create good sleep hygiene by turning off technology, establishing early bedtime routines to match your body’s hormone rhythm, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine. This improves your energy level dramatically.

Watch what you eat: Sugars, caffeine, refined carbohydrates, and processed food can exacerbate the stress response. Eat vegetables of different colours, whole grains, healthy fats and lean proteins, which contain essential nutrients the body needs to make proper hormones.

Meditate: Meditation puts the body in a deeply relaxed state, which sends a message to the brain and other glands that “all is okay.” This calming effect can last all day, helping the body not react to stressors. There are many different types of meditation; find what works for you.

Create space in your life: If you are overwhelmed by your “to do” list, your body is on constant alert. Give yourself a break so you do not put unnecessary pressure on your stress

glands and ovaries. Set boundaries on your time and make it a priority to spend some time in nature, to connect with your spirit, or to just relax.

Exercise: Regular exercise helps stimulate natural chemicals in the brain that make us feel good. Physical activity also decreases the stress effect on the body. Listen to your body to see how much is right for you and gradually build up.

Take supplements: Many herbs and nutrients are useful in restoring the glands to optimal functioning. Some supplements such as evening primrose oil can help with moods and breast tenderness, while others aid hot flashes.

It is best to consult a qualified health professional who is familiar with how and when to use supplements as some can produce adverse effects if not used correctly.

Find your bliss: Spend time doing things you love with people you love and who love you. This releases powerful chemicals in the brain that rejuvenate the body and reduce the effects of stress, which robs you of vital energy.

Spring Beauty Update

I

t’s time to bid farewell to the shades of winter! This is the time for your skin to glow with the promise of spring and a little help from mineral powder.

Caitlin Callahan, senior artist on the MAC pro team, said goodnight to her kids and sat down to talk with me just days before leaving to forecast fall makeup trends at fashion week in Milan and Paris. “I think being away is harder on me than it is on them,” she sighed.

The smile quickly returned to her eyes as we discussed something else she is passionate about: her craft. MAC artists take the stage in New York, Milan, London and Paris as designers in their own right at over 300 fashion shows.

Their popularity with our fashion leaders positions them to dictate makeup trends for the coming season. “We’re creating beauty trends for the next season. It’s amazing!“ Cait beams.

“I was in New York for spring, which was good because it gives me the North American vibe on what’s happening. I did 13 shows when I was there. After the shows we group all the looks together and break it down into four wearable trends.” The trends for spring 2011 featured in MAC stores include: Pop Classic, Raw Fined, Ice Dreams and Terra Copper.

Cait’s Makeup Must-Haves of the Season

As with most things in life, makeup starts with a good foundation. Mineralized powder foundation is one of Cait’s must-haves of the season.

It is baked in Italy and packed with minerals so your skin is as healthy as it looks.

Well defined lips and creamy lipstick have made a bold comeback, making the lip a perfect palate for colours such as poppy and orange, coral, apricot and red. Cait warns that the featured eye and lip together can look dated. Instead, start with slightly dewy, fresh skin enhanced by a mineral bronzer, then alternate focus on eyes and lips, playing with application until you determine how each look best complements your personal style.

While she watches ever-changing fashion come and go, Cait marvels at the growth and consistency of MAC’s clientele. “When I started with MAC, the average age of our customer was 20.

Now I am 40 and the average age of our customer is 37. It’s interesting to me how we’ve all grown together. “ She attributes this loyalty to the family that is MAC. s an entertainment reporter with ET Canada and Global News and former host of Urban Rush and Makeover Wish, Erin Cebula is well known as one of Canada’s hottest celebrity reporters. Her pretty face and impeccably groomed physique grace the streets and events in and around Vancouver when she’s not jetting off to red carpet awards shows. In an industry that idolizes beauty and rewards youth over experience, Cebula has carved out a niche for herself as a sparkling personality who not only looks the part, but also happens to be terrific at her job. At 35, she is aware that this kind of role has a shelf life... and that tough workouts and great makeup are all the more important, no matter how skilled she may be. Erin speaks with Fresh Vancouver about the ups and downs of her career and the secrets to staying flawless in the spotlight.

Fresh Vancouver (FV): How did you get

your start in the media?

Erin: My first “real” job was working on James Barber’s show, The Urban Peasant, as an editor.

I loved it. James opened my eyes to food; he was so passionate. He’s gone now. I went to his celebration (I don’t want to call it a funeral). His favourite food was Chinese food, so a group of people gathered at Sun Sui Wah restaurant and watched a number of his performances over the years. I’m getting choked up just thinking about it!

then I had to learn on the fly how to do it! It was really fun – but really nerve-wracking. I would barf in the morning before the show!

FV: Did your Global TV job lead to your Urban Rush gig?

Erin: Yes, I did that for two years and then the opportunity to host Urban Rush came up. The people at Global were very supportive. It was a great fit. Urban Rush was the best education: an hour of live television every day, five days a week! So many guests, so much information, so many personalities; it was awesome!

FV: What’s it like to be the West Coast correspondent for ET Canada?

Erin: It’s a dream gig. It was part of my five-year plan, but then it happened within two years. So I’m just trying to enjoy it and appreciate it, learn as much as I can and not think too far ahead. It’s pretty unbelievable at times, meeting all those amazing people and travelling.

sports: soccer, volleyball, skiing and snowboarding. Tonight, I’m going snowshoeing. I always look for active things. I do Bikram’s yoga – I love the sweat and the challenge. I work out two days a week with a trainer who really challenges me. I get bored if I go to the gym by myself.

FV: Are you on any special kind of diet?

Erin: I don’t diet – I’ve never dieted. I just eat healthy food. I eat junk food once in a while but I don’t have a sweet tooth. I love marinated artichokes, cheese, savoury foods... red wine is probably my biggest downfall! And I don’t eat big portions – I don’t like to feel sluggish and full. When I’m craving something, it’s usually a salad or a really amazing piece of fruit. I buy organic as much as I can.

FV: You’re in an industry that idolizes youth.

How do you feel about the prospect of getting older within this climate?

Erin: Having a job that is 95 percent fun is a gift. And meeting people who are at the top of their game is so inspiring. They’ve excelled, done what they wanted to do, and done it well.

I always hope some of that will rub off on me!

Erin: I had more concerns about it when I was 30 than I do now at 35. I take care of myself and I show up to work well groomed. I’m in my job because I’m good at it. I just don’t let that pressure in – though I do think about it sometimes, especially when I’m tired and my skin’s not the greatest. But it’s amazing what a healthy diet, enough sleep, and being comfortable in what you’re wearing will do.

FV: What catapulted your career as an entertainment reporter?

FV: And the other five percent – the part that’s not so fun?

FV: Do you feel pressure to be exceptionally poised and polished in your role?

Erin: It was a fluke! I wrote a script for an international language school. On the day of production, the woman they had hired just wasn’t the right fit, so they asked me to do it. I’d come to work in running shoes – I hadn’t even had a shower! I ran home, showered and scrambled to find something to wear...

It went really well and they started using me more on camera. Somebody at Global TV saw a video and brought me in to audition for an entertainment reporter role. I got the job,

Erin: Trying to get yourself “up” when you’re not inspired by the story, or something in your own life is getting you down. Not only do you have to be happy and perky, you also have to look good. I love clothes and fashion, but sometimes I have to tell myself: “Okay, Cebula, ditch the Lululemons – it’s go time.”

Erin: I think I’m lucky to be on the West Coast – people are more relaxed. This city accepts a more casual look, but when I go to LA, I step it up. I feel more comfortable if I’m on the same level as all those well-dressed women on the red carpet. And it’s really fun to dress up!

FV: What’s the best thing about being an enter-

tainment reporter?

FV: What do you do to stay so fit?

FV: What beauty products can you just not live without?

Erin: I’m definitely a jock. I grew up playing

I suntanned like crazy when I was young and I had sun spots. I had a facial there and had my face mapped and exfoliated, and they put me on the products and my skin totally changed. The microfoliant, which I use every day, is the best thing I’ve ever used. I also add their vitamin boost powder to my face cream, and use their eye cream at night.

for the right reasons. I think I would always choose a natural route before anything else. I’ve had smile lines since I was 13 years old, but it’s because I smile all the time! I wouldn’t look like me without them!

FV: When you go out on your days off, is there one thing you have to put on?

Erin: I have finally learned how to do my makeup well on my own. There are makeup artists at Global, and if I’m at the station before I go to a shoot I’ll get them to do my makeup. But I would say 75 percent of the time I’m doing it myself. I typically wear a little less when I do my own, especially foundation. But I’ve picked up many tips from the pros. I have finally figured out how to do fake eyelashes!

Erin: I use Jane Ardel mineral power, mascara, and either lip gloss or lip balm. Those are my “musts.” You are ready for the day when you put on mascara. It makes your eyes look open!

FV: What are your views on cosmetic proce-

dures?

Erin: I was a bit judgemental a few years ago,

but I’ve realized that people should just do whatever makes them happy. I’ve whitened my teeth. I dye my hair. I get my nails done. Whatever works for you – as long as you’re doing it

FV: Do you always have your makeup done for

television?

FV: Who does your hair?

Erin: Nobody does my hair – I don’t like anybody doing it. I have tricky hair – three cowlicks, naturally curly, but very fine. If you don’t know how to do it, it’s not going to be pretty 18

– either some news anchor bouffant or way too high fashion, and not what I like.

FV: What are your favourite ways to relax?

Erin: Snowboarding is a kind of meditation for me. My mind is completely clear and I just smile and feel happy. And I love massages. If I could, I would go for massages every day. I just go to the local massage therapy clinic, but for a treat I go to spas – I love the Miraj Hammam Spa. I feel like a million bucks after.

FV: What’s the best health and beauty advice you could give our readers?

Erin: Get lots of rest! I also drink a lot of water and green tea. Having a partner who thinks you are the bomb really helps. When I wake up in the morning with bed head and sleep in my eyes, he still looks at me like I’m a super model – after 11 years together! My husband is my biggest supporter. He’s opened my eyes to a lot of things, and we have a tonne of fun together.

Full-body Screening Technology

here’s simply no denying the fact that, as we age, our risk factors for disease go up. But nowadays, rather than waiting for symptoms to appear before addressing a potentially life-threatening problem, we can take a proactive approach. It’s called whole-body or full-body scanning, and it’s a wellness check-up that saves lives.

A full-body scan is a medical imaging test which may potentially detect diseases such as cancers or aneurysms, even before a person develops symptoms. The major benefit of this exam is to catch deadly diseases in the early stages, which can reduce morbidity and save lives. Early detection saves lives.

Full-body screening is a proactive measure to take good care of your body and your health.

People from all walks of life attend full -body exams. Many people have particular goals in mind, or wish to have certain questions answered. Some are executives; some are parents; others have a significant family history of illness and are worried. For many, this test provides peace of mind. Others are interested in a “health check.” This is also a good examination for people who have been previously diagnosed with cancers, as it can detect hidden disease.

The Choice of Technologies

There are many full-body screening exams now available, so how do you choose? Ultrasound screening offers only a limited evaluation, as it is impossible to image many parts

of the body, such as the brain, with ultrasound.

CT scan (also known as CAT scan) examinations are available, but the problem with CT scans is that they use ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation has been shown to cause cancers, if you receive too high a dose. Avoiding excess radiation is very important.

The most recent and current full-body examination is with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI is a medical imaging technique used to visualize detailed internal structures.

Unlike CT scans, MRI uses no radiation. MRI examinations have become faster and more comfortable than ever before. It is considered a relatively safe imaging modality, and even considered the preferred imaging modality over CT scans to image many parts of the body.

MRI provides good differentiation between the tissues of the body, which makes it especially useful in imaging the brain, spine, abdominal and pelvic organs, bone marrow, and cancers, compared with other medical imaging techniques. In clinical practice, MRI is used to distinguish pathologic tissue (such as a tumour) from normal tissue.

In addition, some centres in Canada now have specialized cancer detection technology, referred to as Diffusion Weighted Imaging with Background Suppression (DWIBS). DWIBS highlights areas of restricted diffusion, such as that which occurs in many malignant tumours, and provides an outstanding visualization of lymph nodes. This technique is used at many medical and oncology centres throughout the world, and has been shown to be comparable to Positron Emission Tomography (PET), a well known tool in cancer imaging. It is very exciting that this technology is now available in Canada, and even available in an MRI fullbody screening exam.

Screening is Part of the Process

It is important to remember that all screening exams have their limits. Your exam is a snapshot in time, of your health and your body. Full-body MRI screening is designed to supplement, not replace, any other medical investigation, unless discussed in advance with the radiologist and your physician. Patients should still attend mammography, PSA blood testing for men (prostate cancer surveillance), and colonoscopy screening for bowel cancer. Your family physician will be informed about your screening results to incorporate with your overall health records.

Some controversy exists for full-body screening exams. Incidental findings of benign entities (also known as “incidental-omas” in the medical profession) are occasionally found, and this may create some anxiety for the patient until the finding has been fully investigated. Some centres will do additional scans to answer any questions about “incidental-omas.” It is very advantageous to attend a screening centre that has physicians available on site to discuss the results upon completion of the exam. Most people have questions about their bodies and their health, and having someone available to review the images and address concerns after your exam is beneficial and comforting. It is part of the process of educating yourself about your body and health.

As the old adage goes, “health is wealth.” Every doctor will agree that taking care of yourself should include a good diet, active lifestyle, not too much stress, and happiness. This is just one more thing that you can do to empower yourself, educate yourself, and take care of your body.

colleagues are not as observant as we may suspect them to be, and we are generally most critical of ourselves.

Some patients also struggle with feelings of guilt for having surgery when they lack support from friends and family. Having a strong support system is invaluable to your recovery, as it has been shown that a lack of support can contribute to postoperative depression, anxiety, and low satisfaction with your treatment outcome. When a patient that is financially inflexible undergoes surgery, feelings of guilt may arise as many sacrifices may be necessary to achieve their transformation, and the patient may begin to feel he or she has handled their finances selfishly or irresponsibly.

Motivation

The motivation behind the decision to have surgery is different for everyone. It is disheartening to see patients requesting surgery that is not their true desire, but rather the desire of another. Your body is your own, and no one should be given the power to make decisions about your body except you. It is often a combination of internal and external pressures that motivate an individual to seek elective surgery. I see many patients who feel that their outer age is not reflective of their internal emotional age, and wish to project a younger appearance to balance this disconnect. With an aging population working past retirement, many patients also seek cosmetic enhancement to stay competitive in the workforce, as younger, fresher faces compete for their positions.

Long-standing feelings of inadequacy in physical appearance may also be a prime motivation, especially when the individual has undergone experiences that negatively impacted their self-esteem, such as peer or parental ridicule or discrimination based on their appearance.

Social influences are also a common factor, often linked with the irrational desire for perfection, an aspiration that many struggle to reach, yet never achieve because one’s concept of perfection is based on personal perception.

Communication Is Key

It is important to understand that although surgery can have widespread positive effects on your life, choosing to have surgery is not a decision to come to lightly. The benefits of surgery should be weighed against the risks, and your expectations should be realistically set. Surgery should not be considered when you are undergoing a life change or an emotional stressor, such as a job loss or career change, death in the family or divorce, as your motivations will likely be fuelled by heightened emotions rather than critical reasoning. You are ready to proceed with surgery or cosmetic enhancement procedures when you find a surgeon who understands what you are looking for and can communicate with you in a way that makes sense. Communication is key to help manage your emotions.

The

Naked Truth

s a professional dance teacher and competitor and a fitness instructor and bodybuilder, I am surprised, dismayed and often bewildered by the fact that many people have never looked at their own bodies in a full-length mirror, clothed or naked! Through dancing and bodybuilding, the mirror became my friend. It plays a huge role in my training and enhances my competitive performance. As a performer, I am scantily clad much of the time, as this reveals dance lines, symmetry and muscular development. Without a full-length mirror, I couldn’t execute my job. I have visited many friends and clients in their own homes to discover no full-length mirror. The mirrors I did see were utilized strictly for décor. They were definitely not being used as a rational tool to examine themselves for the purpose of managing health and preventing disease.

At age 19, I was advised by a natural healer to look into a full length mirror naked every day and tell myself that I was beautiful. That was 34 years ago, and to this day, I am faithful to those words. To see yourself as you really are is an act of courage. There are times when I’ve peered into the mirror and haven’t been totally satisfied with what I’ve seen. I know that at least some of my physical body composition is pliable, including my skin, muscle tone and percentage of body fat. Accepting this gives me confidence and inner security. Fighting this makes me feel insecure. It means much of what I see is up to me and is something I can’t blame on genetics alone.

Of course, some of my physical exterior is static, such as the natural colour of my eyes and hair, or the size and length of my bones, including my height as an adult. This is where the second line of the serenity prayer comes to mind: “Accept the things I cannot change.” But the amount and quality of flesh attached to my bones is something I do have control over.

On a few occasions, I’ve been thankful to look naked in the mirror and see imperfections that were medical and required immediate attention.

This age old practice of self-examination endorsed by modern medicine is much more than vanity. Looking at yourself naked in the mirror is based on pure logic and could save your life. Try examining your breasts with your blouse on!

Reap the Benefits of Nudity Trapped in tomb-like textiles, we exile our flesh from experiencing the environment of life. We atrophy the majority of our epidermis. If you put a plaster cast on a broken arm, the skin starves for vitamin D; muscles weaken due to strangled range of motion; nerve synapses depress to a whimper of their former joy. Pediatricians agree that infants thrive with a daily dose of “naked time,” especially before and after a bath. This unhampered time of vulnerability reduces chafing and skin problems that often occur as a result of being covered up too long. It even aids in infant brain development.

I practice the art of air bathing for at least 10 minutes every day, usually after a bath or shower to reap the benefits of natural health. Air bathing is defined as moving about in your birthday suit. The skin is our largest eliminative organ. Air bathing allows the skin to cool down, breathe and even absorb elements, moisture and ions from the surrounding atmosphere. Air bathing also provides a thermogenic effect, meaning it stimulates your metabolic rate at a low level, forcing the body to use stored body fat as a fuel source.

Sleeping in the nude enables fresh air to travel over the surface of the entire body and distribute heat more efficiently, as well as allowing the body to move and turn without hindrance. Modern clothing, especially petroleum based synthetic fabrics, can limit the flow of air over the skin and interfere with the evaporation of perspiration.

Sunbathing nude for short periods helps to clear the skin of rashes and a variety of skin disorders, providing the diet is clean. Sunbathing also prevents infection because natural light acts to naturally sterilize the skin

against pathogens and hostile bacteria. Why are most of us deficient in vitamin D? We spend too much time covered up.

Routine male nudity may improve fertility. If the sex organs are allowed to “hang loose” to cool the testicles, this slight decrease in temperature combined with the absence of tight or restrictive clothing can help sustain a higher sperm count throughout life.

Why Are We Afraid of Nudity?

“Gymnophobia,” derived from the Greek “gymnos” (naked) and “phobos” (fear), is a fear of nudity. Gymnophobics experience anxiety from nudity, even if they realize their fear is irrational. They may worry about seeing others naked or being seen naked, or both. This fear may stem from a general anxiety about sexuality, a fear of feeling physically inferior, or a fear that nakedness leaves one exposed and unprotected. Avoidance of nudity in private situations may be a continuation of modesty, or may extend to prudishness or body shame. Only an actual fear of nudity qualifies as gymnophobia. Only when the fear is seemingly beyond one’s control or is interfering with daily life can an anxiety disorder diagnosis be made.

History reveals many cultures unafraid of exposing their skin publicly or that refused to use fashion as a false cover. Spartans were basically bare and their victories in pan-Hellenic sports competitions enticed all neighboring Greeks to exercise nude, creating the word “gymnasium.” Romans mingled in magnificent bathhouses, enjoying communal nudity as they drank, dined, bathed, read books, argued politics and watched theatre.

Even today, at the bathhouses in Baden-Baden, Germany, public nudity is embraced and practiced with dignity.

Much of the fear and sensationalism surrounding nudity in North American society stems directly from the publicly held but erroneous belief that nudity is somehow necessarily or at least indirectly connected with pornography, perversion and sex. But nudity in and of itself does not necessitate the implication of sex. For example, for the purpose of medical analysis, the body must be examined in the nude. Babies, when first born and throughout their young lives, are examined in the nude to visually detect any abnormalities. Nudity is required for much more than sex.

Embrace Your Naked Form A male friend of mine shared an experience he had with his own nudity in the mirror. He was removing his clothing to have a shower when he looked in the mirror and noticed that one testicle was greatly swollen. He may not have noticed this if he hadn’t looked at his own naked reflection in the mirror. He immediately went to the doctor, was diagnosed with epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis) and received medical treatment.

If you don’t have a full-length mirror mounted on the wall, go out and get one. Then strip down and dare to be bare. Take a good long look at yourself, analyze your findings, and cope with the naked truth. Use this evidence to facilitate positive change if need be, or congratulate yourself for that hard work and discipline engineered by none other than yourself.

Go ahead. Top up your self-esteem. True health value created is true health value earned. Walk around naked for ten minutes every day; enjoy the freedom and the wonderful proven health benefits. You’ll be surprised how good you’ll feel and the sense of well being that it evokes.

Functional Movements for a Functioning Future

nvision this: One day you find yourself suddenly unable to lift a bag of groceries from the floor to your counter; you can’t seem to find the strength to lift yourself out of your favourite chair; or you’ve tripped at the bottom of your staircase, twisted your ankle and can’t pick yourself up.

These sound like simple tasks, but how would it affect you if you lost the ability to complete them? Losing the ability to handle basic, functional movements means losing the ability to care for yourself.

Functional movements are required for all of our normal activities of daily living, yet these are the tasks we typically take for granted. If you lose your body’s natural ability to complete basic tasks, your quality of life will radically change. When considering your body’s ability to handle functional movements, the three essential areas to consider include core strength and stability, flexibility, and balance. Let’s look at each component a little more closely.

Core strength and stability

Core strength and abdominal muscles are often considered synonymous, but in reality, the core consists of many different muscles that run the length of the trunk and torso. When these muscles contract, they stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle and create a solid base of support. If your core muscles are weak, you’re more likely to develop conditions such as lower back pain, rotator cuff tendinitis or chronic headaches. People with weak core muscles often have poor lumbar curves and unnatural swayback of the spine, causing a great deal of stress on the lower back region. The inability to stabilize the trunk can also lead to impairments in the body’s ability to transfer movements

effectively between the legs and arms.

Remember the simple act of picking up a bag of groceries? Next time you perform this action, take note of what your body does. You start to bend at the torso and legs, which automatically engages your core stabilizers. While engaged, you make micro-adjustments to your balance to ensure you don’t topple over, then you start the squat motion to lift the groceries from the floor. Once you have started the movement, you further engage the muscles that line your back and front torso while placing those groceries on the counter. Wow, you’ve just done a full-body workout!

Flexibility and Balance

When considering functional movements, flexibility and balance cannot be separated. But to understand how they relate to your everyday life, you have to first understand the concept of “proprioception,” or the mind-body connection. Proprioception is the ability to sense the position, location, orientation and movement of the body and its parts.

It may sound like a very basic concept, but think about the last time you tripped and stumbled, then regained your composure instead of falling flat on your nose. Or, pay close attention when you stand up out of your chair after reading this article. Your ability to sense where your limbs and body are spatially is remarkable. It’s automatic and second nature; however, if you don’t challenge your body and mind by working on your balance and flexibility, proprioception becomes weakened. Your body’s flexibility and balance are the key to your quality of life.

Implementing balance training into your fitness program is essential. With proper balance training you will both improve core strength and increase joint stability and

mobility. Joint stability and mobility means the amount of resistance offered by the muscles, tendons and tissues that surround a joint. If this resistance is fast and strong, your body has the ability to react to the dynamic or unexpected.

However, if the muscles, ligaments and supporting structures are weak and slow to activate, joints will move into unnatural positions, resulting in pain and dysfunction.

Functional Training for Optimal Health

Functional training involves movements that mimic the way our bodies work – in multiple planes and with multiple joint actions that require sufficient muscle strength, stabilization and coordination. Equipment that can help with functional training includes stability balls, balance boards and pads, kettle balls, power plates and medicine balls. Body weight exercises are also very effective for developing your functional fitness, including sit-ups, front and side plank exercises, V-sits, squats, back bridges, hip lifts, balancing on one leg at a time, and oblique twists.

Fitness programs that incorporate the three functional fitness areas into their training include Pilates, yoga, CrossFit, boot camps and popular home DVD programs like Windsor Pilates, P90X or the Ten-minute Trainer.

Answer:

Laxity of the skin and pockets of fat around the eyes both in the upper and lower eyelids contribute to the tired or angry appearance that many men and women begin to notice in middle age. The issue can be treated with an eyelid operation wherein the skin and muscle are removed above the upper eyelid crease, and the fatty hernias are treated to give the patient an aesthetically more youthful look. In the lower eyelids, the fatty hernias are addressed by an incision on the lower lash margin, where it is very minimally visible. If the lower eyelid skin is tight, surgery can be done from inside the eyelid on the conjunctiva so that there is no scar on the lid. The fat in the lower eyelid is redistributed and a conservative excision of fat is performed. The eyelid incisions are very minimally visible and in women, they are easily hidden by eyeliner and mascara.

What’s more important is to identify my patient’s hidden potential, and then use my trained eye, artistic skill, and the best tools and technologies that modern dentistry has to offer to release that potential. Kirk was (and still is, of course!) a handsome, successful, athletic man who, by all accounts, seemed to have an abundance of self-confidence about his appearance. As it turned out, that was partly true. But not completely.

The complete truth was that Kirk – who was by no means vain, selfobsessed or unusually fixated with his appearance – was nevertheless insecure about his smile, and had been for a long time. This was something that I immediately perceived upon meeting him, through his body language, persona and answers to my “how do you feel about your smile” questions.

Technically speaking, Kirk’s upper front teeth caught the light in an unflattering angle, and the shape and geometry of the tooth surface combined with the ragged finish of the bottom of the teeth gave him a flawed smile. But, technicalities aside, looking at Kirk as an artist would consider the potential of a blank canvas, my assessment was that his teeth didn’t reflect his true character and inner light. Frankly, his smile was holding him back. And it was my job to free him from that limitation, and help him take his smile, and his life, to the next level.

Through further consultation with Kirk, it became clear that he wanted to transform his smile in a subtle but powerful way. He wanted something simple, yet profound.

After exploring various options and looking at high-resolution photos on the monitor, we decided on what I call a “Mini Smile Makeover,” con-

sisting of bonding and sculpting his teeth. This is different than a more intensive, clinically involved treatment (such as porcelain veneers), and was the ideal way to achieve the perfect, natural look that Kirk wanted.

Alternatives to

Liposuction:

Non-invasive Body Contouring

at. Whether it’s a little or a lot, it has a terrible predilection for showing up in places on our bodies where we just can’t stand it. For most women, this means belly, hips and thighs; for others it might mean upper arms, beneath the chin, or “back fat.” For men, it often means love handles or “man boobs.” Wherever it falls, most of us have that spot on our figures that we’d really like to change.

Unfortunately, diet and exercise alone can’t always do it. While we can tone, tighten, and generally lean out with diet and exercise, studies consistently show there is no such thing as “target training” that will effectively eradicate fat deposits from a particular area of the body.

So is our only effective option to go under the knife?

Not anymore. A relatively new technology known as “lipolaser” is changing the science of fat removal.

Fire the Laser!

Rather than remove fat cells through surgery, lipolaser uses a cold laser to penetrate just below the skin’s surface, and instead of suctioning out the fat, the cells are simply shrunk down in size.

You still have all the same fat cells – they’re just smaller. And so is your body.

There’s no knife, no surgery, and best of all, no pain. The cost, recovery time and risk associated with liposuction make it a difficult

option for some women; lipolaser, on the other hand, may not produce the same dramatic results as surgery, but it is a non-invasive option that works. The risks are very low. Since the laser targets fat cells just beneath the skin’s surface, it poses no risk to the organs. No incision is required and there is absolutely no need for recovery time. The only side effect noted to date is mild hyper-pigmentation in some darkerskinned patients.

Lipolaser uses a low-level laser to deliver photon energy beneath the skin, where it perforates the subcutaneous adipocytes (fat cells) temporarily, allowing them to drain triglycerides into the lymphatic system. The triglycerides are broken down into free fatty acids (FFAs), water and glycerol, and are metabolized and flushed out of the body. Each procedure releases about 500 calories worth of fat from specific areas of your body.

Once these calories enter the lymphatic system, they must be removed before they can relocate to another area of the body. That means no food two hours before or two hours after treatment, plenty of water, and no carbs on the day of treatment. And get some cardio! Doing a cleanse while undergoing multiple treatments can be beneficial as well.

Weighing In on Lipolaser

At the Nu Age Lipolaser clinic in Yaletown, owners Ron Zarr and Alicia Macleod claim a 95 percent satisfaction rate from their patients. Of course, for the procedure to be effective, clients have to be young enough and healthy enough for their lymphatic systems to flush out the excess triglycerides – the ideal patients are men and women between the ages of 25 and 45. lthough skincare trends can change with the seasons, healthy skin starts with a basic skincare routine including the well-established fundamentals: a gentle cleanser, exfoliant, antioxidant, moisturizer, and sunscreen. But beyond these basics are a number of skincare industry “buzz words” that you may want to consider as part of your skincare program – though some may have more benefits than others. Let’s have a look at what’s hot in skincare.

Peptides

Collagen is a protein that keeps our skin firm and supported. Through aging and sun exposure, our collagen breaks down and contributes to wrinkle formation. Although we cannot replace collagen in the skin, amino acids known as peptides can signal the production of new collagen. Keep in mind that although you might notice an improvement to fine lines and texture, skincare products alone do not have the ability to restore significant volume where collagen has been depleted.

Antioxidants

Botanicals

A key component in every skincare routine, topical antioxidants protect skin cells against free radicals in the environment. Free radical activity damages skin by decreasing elasticity, forming wrinkles and creating pigment changes. One of the most commonly used antioxidants in skincare is vitamin C, which is widely accepted by dermatologists for its anti-redness and collagen synthesis properties. It is important to find a product that contains stabilized L-ascorbic acid to ensure you receive its benefits.

Another antioxidant receiving recent buzz is coffeeberry. Derived from the Coffea arabica plant, coffeeberries may have the highest antioxidant activity available, even more powerful than blueberries and green tea.

They are also high in polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory properties and are gentle on sensitive skin.

Botanical products contain ingredients derived from herbs, flowers, roots, leaves, fruits and seeds. Aside from imparting natural colourants or fragrances to cosmetic products, they may also provide other benefits to the skin. For instance, papaya and pineapple are often used in exfoliants, and green tea as an antioxidant. Grapefruit has antibacterial properties, and aloe vera is well known for its soothing and healing abilities. Some clinical research has suggested that licorice root may be effective in treatment of hyperpigmentation as it acts as a melanin inhibitor. However, despite these promising results, more research is needed to test its efficacy against non-botanical skin lightening agents such as hydroquinone, which is currently the only skin lightening agent approved by the FDA for treatment of hyperpigmentation.

The Hottest Skincare Product on the Market: Sunscreen!

Ultraviolet rays damage our DNA, which is the genetic material inside cells that controls the cell’s function. When DNA breaks down from ultraviolet exposure, it can lead to skin cancer. However, recent studies have suggested that DNA repair enzymes in our body may have the ability to restore damaged cells. Although this is an interesting area of research, it is still in the experimental stage and it is unclear whether the skincare products on the market that claim to contain DNA repair enzymes actually have the ability to replicate the results seen in the lab.

Organic skincare products contain no potentially harmful chemicals or toxic ingredients, are not tested on animals, and contain only natural substances. The movement towards organic is logical if you consider that a percentage of everything we apply on the skin is absorbed into our bloodstream. However, organic labelling in the cosmetic industry is not regulated, meaning only certified organic products have undergone the appropriate regulation standards. Usually if a product has been certified organic, it will be labeled as such.

You may have heard it’s “the hottest thing in cosmetics,” but in reality, nanotechnology has been around since ancient times. In cosmetics, these microscopic-sized particles are more readily absorbed into the skin and penetrate deeper below the surface, potentially entering cells. This has raised controversy around the safety of nanoparticles in cosmetics and their potential long-term effects. For this reason, the FDA has called for continued testing in the use of nanotechnology in cosmetics.

Dermatologists have been saying it for years – no tan is a safe tan! Sunscreen is the most fundamental product to have in your daily skincare routine, and it is the most effective way to help prevent premature aging.

However, not all sunscreens are made equal. To ensure adequate protection, apply a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB protective) sunscreen of minimum SPF 30 every day. Even on cloudy days, ultraviolet rays are strong enough to induce dermal damage that contributes to photo aging, pigment and textural changes, and wrinkles. Intermittent use of sunscreen

is not sufficient in protecting the skin from damage! It is also important to remember that even though fair skin is most vulnerable, darker skin is not completely immune to damage. Most people underestimate the amount of damage they’ve incurred through years of incidental sun exposure, and don’t realize that the damaging effects of UV rays are cumulative; it can take years before visibly presenting itself in the skin. The key to ensuring adequate sun protection is to apply a thick layer (a half teaspoon amount on the face, a shot glass amount for the body depending on your size), and re-apply frequently (at least every hour when directly sun exposed). Don’t forget, children need protection as well!

Sunscreens come in two forms: physical and chemical. Chemical sunscreens include ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, and Mexoryl XL, and work by absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Physical sunscreens, with ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, act as a physical block by deflecting ultraviolet rays off the surface of the skin. If you have sensitive skin, you may find physical sunscreens more tolerable.

Recently, SPF 100 sunscreens became available, but a higher SPF isn’t always better. As I stated earlier, the factors that determine whether you’re receiving adequate protection are mainly the thickness and frequency of application. If you are not applying enough sunscreen, your protection will be close to zero. Rather than finding the highest SPF available, try

boosting your protection with an additional layer of mineral sunscreen.

Applied with a brush, this physical block can be applied over your makeup as a quick midday touchup. Keep in mind that I only recommend mineral sunscreen in addition to your regular cream sunscreen, as it is generally not applied heavily enough to be effective as your primary sun protection.

This is also true for spray sunscreens, which tend to provide minimal coverage. Ultimately, if you get with a tan while using sunscreen, you’re not applying enough. Make sunscreen a part of your daily routine, and protect your skin now for the future!

Naturopathic Treatments for

Stress, Anxiety and Depression

nyone keeping up with social trends can’t help but notice that the rate of stress and stress-related illnesses like anxiety and depression is on the rise. Recent surveys of Canadian university students indicate that 25 percent have symptoms of depression. It is now thought that up to 10 percent of the population will suffer an anxiety disorder at some point in their life. An estimated 85 percent of visits to family physicians are due to stress-related disorders. Rates of stress and stress disorders have sky-rocketed and the majority of people will suffer from severe stress at one time or another.

So how can we protect ourselves from stress, anxiety and depression (SAD)? The best protection is self-care through diet, exercise, sleep, social connections and the right supplements. Though they are typically the things that everyone knows they should do, under conditions of stress, they are the first to go due to lack of energy or time.

Your Stress-free Diet Eating a healthy and regular diet is crucial to insulate your body from blood sugar fluctuations that can make all the SAD symptoms worse. It is important to eat adequate amounts of proteins at every meal such as nuts, soy, fish, white meats or eggs, or supplement with a good protein drink.

Be sure to include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. During periods of high stress, it is tempting to increase consumption of sweet foods, coffee and caffeinated drinks and alcohol. All of these can make the SAD situation worse, not better.

For sweets, I would substitute fresh and even dried fruit to satisfy the sweet cravings. For coffee and caffeine, I recommend substituting green tea. Green tea contains some caffeine, but it also contains l-theanine, which is an amino acid shown to lessen anxiety and increase alpha brain waves that are associated with relaxation and meditation. Try to break the coffee habit and replace it with green tea. Coffee can make anxiety much worse. Green tea also contains many beneficial antioxidants and has been shown to both prevent and treat cancer. Green tea can also help you detoxify and lose weight. Green tea is a real superfood because it contains so many constituents beneficial to good mental and physical health. Drink it every day!

Stress-busting Exercise Physical exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stress. It helps burn stress hormones that build up during periods of high stress. Exercise is also the best cure for depression. Many studies have confirmed that exercise works better than either anti-depressant drugs or psychotherapy for depression. The problem is that most depressed people are too tired or unmotivated to even go for a walk. But if you can force yourself (or have a friend force you) to get out and work out a little, it is one of the best things you can do for any of the SAD disorders.

Some other types of exercise that are especially useful against SAD symptoms include yoga, tai-chi, chi-kung or any similar type of mar-

tial art. Although meditation isn’t exercise, it does involve deep breathing and relaxation and is really good at preventing and alleviating SAD symptoms. Just taking a minute and breathing a few deep breaths in the middle of a stressful day is an excellent way to relax and unwind stress before it gets to you.

Sleep for Stress Usually, the first thing to go during SAD episodes is sleep. Good sleeping patterns must be preserved at all costs during periods of high stress.

Good sleep hygiene techniques include not watching TV, using the computer or any electronic device in the hour before sleep. Keeping the room cool and dark during the night also assists good sleep.

There are many good natural sleep aids and they all work a little differently for each person. My current favourite sleep supplement is a chewable tablet containing l-theanine, 5-HTP and melatonin. I find that because it is chewable, it absorbs very quickly and, therefore, takes effect in a very short period of time. If you wake up a lot during the night, taking magnesium before bed is helpful as well as taking a time-released melatonin or another one of the chewable combo tablets.

Stay Connected Study after study has shown that people who have good social support have fewer episodes of SAD. This makes sense, since a good talk with a family member or good friend is very therapeutic for everyday stress.

If the stress is severe or prolonged, then seeing a professional for counselling or therapy is an excellent investment. There are some very good techniques to deal with anxiety disorders such as cognitive behavioural therapy. For moderate to severe depression, psychotherapy is beneficial with or without the use of anti-depressants.

Supplements for Stress The first thing I recommend is a good multivitamin that contains all the B vitamins and extra minerals like magnesium that are so useful during periods of stress.

The second thing I recommend is an adaptogenic herb like ginseng, rhodiola and ashwaganda. These are traditional herbs that help the body adapt and cope better with stresses of all types. They have been well-studied and shown to increase physical and mental energy, keep blood sugar levels stable and stabilize levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, during periods of high stress. My current favourite stress herb is rhodiola. Rhodiola originates out of Siberia and has been used as an adapatogenic herb to survive the harsh climate. Studies have also shown that it helps to balance neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which are often unbalanced during periods of high stress, anxiety and depression.

Another herb that has been well studied for both anxiety and depression is St. John’s Wort. This herb has been found to have benefits for mild to moderate depression. Other studies have shown that it is equal to

many of the SSRI anti-depressants at alleviating mild to moderate depression. It has a better safety profile than the SSRI anti-depressants, but one should be aware that it can cause photo-sensitization, so people sensitive to the sun must avoid over exposure.

SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are the popular class of anti-depressants like Prozac, Celexa , Paxil or Zoloft. It is important to understand that these drugs work by keeping the serotonin you already have at the synaptic junction of neurons re-cycling and not degrading as quickly. However, they do not increase the overall levels of serotonin the brain. Eventually, the serotonin levels in the brain become depleted and these drugs stop being as effective as they once were. A more rational alternative to low levels of serotonin in the brain is to saturate the body with precursors to serotonin such as tryptophan or 5-hydroxytryptophan, known as 5-HTP, which is good for treating depression and sleep disorders.

L-theanine, discussed above for sleep, is an extract made from green tea. It is available in much higher quantities in the extracted form and can be used to treat anxiety disorders that haven’t responded to some of the other selfcare methods I have already discussed.

An approach that integrates a number of these recommendations is much more effective than relying on a single approach or remedy to treat the SAD conditions. If these suggestions do not significantly assist in reducing SAD symptoms, then I recommend seeking professional help from a health professional experienced in treating these conditions.

olfing is a special kind of bodywork. It is truly holistic. Usually level. Fortunately, through the skilful manipulation of Rolfing, this can be done over a series of ten sessions, each session has a purpose of reversed. The fascia can get soft and realigned in harmony with the whole deep alignment of a specific segment of the body (e.g., one ses- body. A Strange Name

Though named after its founder, Dr. Ida Rolf (1896-1979), Dr. Rolf had originally named the procedure Structural Integration. As the story goes, her first students preferred to use the more memorable and affectionate name, and that’s the name that stuck.

Four Pillars of Great Skin

T

he journey to healthier skin begins with essential nutrients that have the ability to circulate, stimulate, protect and support your skin daily. re you or a friend having difficulty conceiving? Starting to wonder if something may be wrong?

Perhaps you don’t want to go to the doctor just yet, or have already taken some of those first medical steps?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, the information in this article will be a useful guide to understanding one of the female body’s key signs of fertility: fertile preovulation cervical fluid. This essential bodily fluid is something that a woman trying to conceive must understand.

Slippery, clear, raw egg-white, stretchy: these are the common descriptions given to the vaginal secretions that must be present just before the release of the egg from the ovary (ovulation).

Fluids Are a Sperm’s Best Friend Put simply, fertile pre-ovulation cervical fluid (which is more than 90 percent water) not only looks and feels almost exactly like semen, it is also the sperm’s best friend on its long journey toward its ultimate goal, the penetration of the egg! Let’s go through a few reasons why this is so: • Lubrication: Glycerol (glycerine) amounts increase during sexual excitement and around ovulation. This is thought to be responsible for the lubricating qualities that define these important reproductive events.

• Vaginal pH: Reducing the acidity of the vagina helps sperm survive. High acidity kills sperm and other invaders, which is very beneficial – except when ovulating and trying to conceive.

• Swimming: It is easier for sperm to swim in water than in lotion. Fertile pre-ovulatory cervical fluid has more water than cervical fluid does at other times during the menstrual cycle.

• Food: Sperm needs to eat. Components in the cervical fluid such as calcium, sodium, potassium, glucose, amino acids, zinc, copper, iron, manganese and selenium give the sperm what it needs to thrive.

The interaction of sperm and cervical fluid is often disrupted in couples struggling with fertility. In many cases, women are not producing adequate amounts, or any detectable presence of fertile pre-ovulatory cervical fluid. This scenario, coupled with the male infertility epidemic that we are faced with today, manifests in many months of ‘trying’ and all

the difficulties that eventually come with it. That is why understanding cervical fluid is paramount. If there are fertility issues, it is crucial that you do what you can to help remedy this fluid imbalance.

Checking Your Fluid Levels Checking cervical fluid is easy – no need for any thermometers, urine sticks or other tools. When you know what to look for, it tells you precisely when to get romantic. Generally it is present for two to five days before ovulation. Start checking once bleeding has stopped. The changes in pre-ovulatory cervical fluid, when comparing to its presentation during other phases of the menstrual cycle, are actually quite obvious once you have observed your body for just a couple of cycles. As stated earlier, fertile pre-ovulatory cervical fluid bears an uncanny resemblance to semen. There are three main characteristics to look for when identifying fertile pre-ovulatory cervical fluid: • Slippery: It is slippery so as to provide lubrication for sex.

Some women report a ‘wet’ sensation.

• Clear: It becomes more transparent (like raw egg-white) due to higher water content so as to aid in sperm motility (swimming).

• Stretchy: It stretches when examined between the fingers.

Does not appear ‘tacky’ like lotion.

For some women this is very easy to observe, as enough fertile preovulatory cervical fluid is produced that they find secretions on their underwear. For others, it may be necessary to insert a finger into the vagina to check if smaller amounts are present around the cervix.

How to Boost Fertile Fluids If you suspect or have determined that an inadequate amount of fertile pre-ovulatory cervical fluid is present, there are three things you can do to remedy the situation: 1. Use Pre~Seed sperm-friendly lubricant. It is the only lubricant on the market proven to mimic the composition and functions of a woman’s natural fertile pre-ovulatory cervical fluid.
