otice anything different? You may not have noticed, but to us the change is significant.

Sound like something you said to your husband recently? And after endless guesses, he still doesn’t know the answer, right? Well, we won’t make you sweat it: it’s not a new haircut or outfit. The big news is that Fresh has changed its tagline. The front cover of Fresh used to say “anti-aging and cosmetic therapy” along the top of each issue. These topics continue to be important to us and to our readers. However, in the 15 months since our first issue, we’ve realized a couple of very important things.

First, we’ve been contemplating our use of the term “cosmetic therapy.” Yes, we want to talk about cosmetic options to enhance your beauty and help you feel your absolute best at any age.

But we want to talk about all the other options as well – including a healthy diet and exercise program, relaxation techniques for inner wellness, and alternatives to surgery such as cosmetic acupuncture, holistic skincare, and laser and light-based therapies. We’re still going to include experts’ articles and information about cosmetic therapy, but our focus will continue to be an all-encompassing approach to beauty as we move into the second half of our lives.

Our second realization has come to us along the way as we’ve met, interviewed or done business with so many inspirational women since the launch of the magazine. This publication is about beauty and anti-aging, but it’s also about the incredible women of our incredible city; accomplished women who give back in so many ways. It’s about their stories, what they mean to us and what they can teach us. And that’s why we’ve decided to add the term “lifestyle” to our tagline.

It’s not a redefinition of who we are. Rather, it’s a clarification of what this magazine has grown into since it was born. Our new tagline is “Anti-aging, beauty, lifestyle,” and we love what it stands for. We hope you do, too.

Body Contouring

Without the Knife

A

re you looking to get rid of the flab without going under the knife? The most traditional method of eliminating fat from specific areas of your body is liposuction. Liposuction, however, has related side effects and risks, as well as a rather lengthy recovery time.

There are many non-surgical body contouring options available today. These options are not meant for weight loss, but rather to shape your body and remove stubborn fat deposits. If you are looking for a fast way to lose weight, then this article is not for you. But if you have an area of stubborn fat that will not go away no matter how much you exercise or how well you eat, these contouring technologies are an ideal solution to change your body shape.

The main areas that women are most concerned with are in the lower half of the body and are often known by these unflattering terms: love handles, saddlebags, mummy tummy and pot belly. In addition, many women are concerned with flabby arms and back fat.

If you want to change and shape your body without the knife, there are a number of hightech solutions available today and the technologies are only getting better.

Lipodissolve

Lipodissolve is a treatment that can be used to remove stubborn pockets of fat such as double chins, rounded or saggy cheeks or jowls, neck fat, lower-eye fat pads and other pockets of fat on the body such as love handles, thighs, backs of the arms and knees.

Lipodissolve is a procedure that evolved from Mesotherapy, in which microinjections of a substance called phosphatidylcholine,

which occurs naturally in the body, are injected directly into the fat to shrink the fat cells, essentially “dissolving” fat from unwanted areas.

Lipodissolve differs from mesotherapy in how deep the injections are placed, how much of the solution is injected, what is injected and the intervals between treatments. The main difference between the two procedures is that with Lipodissolve, it takes fewer treatments to achieve results; and the substances used in Lipodissolve are standardized.

The majority of people see results after about four weeks, with an average of one to four treatments depending on the person and the area being treated.

Ultrashape V3

Ultrashape is the oldest of the new technologies for eliminating fat without surgery. Unwanted fat cells are targeted by therapeutic ultrasound energy that is mechanical, rather than thermal (which is why surrounding cells aren’t affected).

The fat cell contents, mainly triglycerides, leak out into the surrounding tissues and then are safely carried away by the body’s physiological systems. Clinical studies have shown that the triglycerides do not significantly accumulate in the blood or liver.

Ultrashape V3 is used in over 57 countries. It is Health Canada approved and more than 200,000 treatments have been performed worldwide. Currently the Ultrashape system is in its third generation (Version 3). This newer system also includes radio frequency with massage to further enhance results from the treatment. The recommended number of treatments is three, and can be spaced as closely as two weeks apart. A similar system that is also available is the Liposonix.

Thermage CPT

Thermage is a treatment that has been around for a number of years for facial skin tightening.

Thermage uses radiofrequency to tighten collagen, contour the skin and stimulate the production of new collagen. One of the downsides of an aging body is wrinkled skin in the tummy area and Thermage is one of the options to tighten and tone your body. Thermage requires one treatment that lasts for many years.

Velashape 2

Velashape 2 is a technology that is used for cellulite and also for local metabolism in areas such as the arms. Now in its third generation, Velashape uses infrared, radiofrequency, suction and massage to smooth away those lumps and bumps. It is frequently used after liposuction to restore some smoothness to those areas as liposuction can leave you with uneven texture of the skin. Velashape reduces the circumference of the areas treated. Approximately six to eight weekly treatments are required.

These are just some of the treatments available for body contouring without the knife.

Though other options such as Zeltiq, Zerona and Lipolaser exist, the above treatments have been available for longer and are in their second or third generation of machines. This means they have been tried, tested and improved with each new version.

Preventing Acne Scarring:

A Five-Step Holistic Program

A

cne affects nearly 80 percent of the population. Acne has traditionally been treated with topical and oral antibiotics, harsh ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and even more invasive laser treatments.

These methods provide a quick fix at best.

Long-term use of antibiotics can compromise one’s immune health. Benzoyl peroxide is also immune-suppressing, but through a different channel: it is an oxygen free radical promoter that ages your skin and depletes it of its antioxidants. The end result is often rebound acne because the inflammation from benzoyl peroxide stimulates oil, which feeds bacterial overgrowth.

A Five-Step Holistic Treatment

Acne lesions come and go, but what should be the top priority is keeping the acne from scar-

ring. It takes nearly one year for a single pimple to fully heal itself.

Scarring can last a lifetime and should be a major consideration in acne treatment. It is important to be using ingredients that clear acne while avoiding trauma to the skin. Use products that are proven to address scar tissue, deliver growth factors and promote ideal conditions for wound healing.

The added benefit of a holistic acne program is that it is also an anti-aging program, supporting the health of the skin and thereby slowing down and preventing the degradation of collagen and elastin.

Following a five-step holistic treatment plan will not only reduce existing scarring, but will prevent further scarring while reducing acneic outbreaks. You can expect long-term results from a holistic plan because it is also working internally to correct the imbalance that is causing the acneic outbreaks. Your five-step plan should include the following: 1. Restore the epidermal barrier, thereby reducing oil secretions.

2. Calm inflammation.

3. Reduce the amount of bacteria.

4. Increase scar tissue removal and repair of damaged areas.

5. Address internal imbalances with Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and nutrition.

For your treatment plan to be successful, you will need to use specific treatments for acne and for scarring, with specific ingredients to fight acne and calm inflammation. We’ll look at each more closely below.

Acne Treatments

One or more of the following acne treatments should be part of your five-step program. Consult your dermatologist to determine which treatments are right for your skin.

Vitamin A infusion peel: This is a unique dermal peel that gets to the root of the problem. It not only treats existing breakouts but also strengthens the immune function of the skin, eliminating scar tissue while preventing further scarring.

Customized peels for acne: A skilled medical esthetician can create a customized peel for your needs based on your skin’s tolerance and the type of acne you are experiencing.

These treatments are great not only for reducing breakouts but also fading pigmented acne scarring and improving the overall skin tone and texture.

Double infusion medi-facial: This is not your typical facial. This clinical facial uses active ingredients that go deep down to the problem. The combination of hydrogen peroxide, with a custom blend of acids and enzymes, results in deeply cleaned, rejuvenated and polished skin.

The Top Five Ingredients for Fighting Acne

The ingredients below are the most effective ingredients you can use as part of your five-step program to heal and prevent acne.

Vitamin A: The most potent and least irritating form of vitamin A is called retinaldehyde. It is a very effective form of vitamin A in the treatment of acne because it does not traumatize the skin and cause further irritation. Vitamin A regulates the sebaceous gland activity and ensures we are replicating healthy, well-formed cells. This is the ultimate anti-aging and acne-treating ingredient.

Beta glucan: This is essential to acneic skin because it boosts the immune function of your skin. It increases macrophage activity, which eats up scar tissue and ensures that each breakout you experience heals quickly and does not lead to a scar.

Willow herb: This natural anti-inflammatory reduces the redness and inflammation associated with acne and assists in the wound healing response.

Mandelic acid: Mandelic acid is a powerful anti-bacterial that fights the bacteria leading to breakouts.

Up with the sun as her name would suggest, Dawn Chubai is poised to inform and entertain us each morning before we’ve even brushed our teeth. The sunny co-host of City TV’s Breakfast Television, Dawn Chubai is also familiar to Vancouverites as a jazz vocalist and an occasional actor, not to mention a curvaceous blond. With professionally done makeup and fabulous clothing supplied by Wear Else for television and Malene Grotrian for glamorous events, we may wonder that Dawn battles the same image issues as most women. But in an industry full of size-two women, and after spending part of her life a little heavier, Dawn knows that we often have trouble perceiving ourselves as we really are. With this in mind, she recently embarked upon a health challenge with a focus on truly sustainable change rather than weight loss. Fresh Vancouver spoke with Dawn about her many different personas: Breakfast Television co-host, sultry jazz singer, actor, wife, Edmonton native, Vancouver girl – and the transformations each role requires.

Fresh Vancouver (FV): As co-host of

Breakfast Television, what do you love most about your job?

Dawn: It’s one of those jobs where you get to laugh every day and you get to learn something every day. Almost every day starts fresh, with whatever happened yesterday put behind us.

Every day presents its own successes and its own challenges.

FV: What are the drawbacks of a daily morning show?

Dawn: The only thing that can be difficult is

getting up at four o’clock in the morning, especially in the winter. It puts me on a very different schedule from my husband, but we try not to let it affect us too much. I have a very supportive husband. He believes in me sometimes more than I believe in myself, and he’s 100 percent on my side.

FV: Biggest challenges of your role?

Dawn: You can’t get complacent or it trans-

lates on air. You have to always be in the moment, but also thinking ahead. There’s a planned spontaneity, but some things, like technical glitches, are beyond your control. Sometimes the mistakes end up being funnier and more interesting than the planned version!

Dawn: Yes, in 1999, I won the Alberta Re-

Dawn: Acting is one other element of performance. I’m a full-blooded Leo and I was meant for the stage. People assume that because of the job I’m in, it’s automatic that I get these reporter roles. But I have to audition like everybody else, and all the other news anchors in town are there too!

FV: What about jazz do you love?

FV: How did you get involved in the weight loss challenge you publicly undertook on Breakfast Television?

I sing quite a bit with Dal Richards now, who’s just released a new CD called Musically Yours. I have two tracks on it, so I’m pretty excited!

Dawn: I love the concept of jazz. My style is a combination of the great female jazz vocalists like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and someone like Cassandra Wilson, who has an alternative, darker style. There’s a spontaneity to jazz, similar to the spontaneous elements of my television job. With the right moment, the right band, the right audience, sometimes you can hit it out of the park. Other times, not so much.

It’s the same as with the show. If you don’t take chances, you’re just going to be the same as everyone else.

FV: You have also done some work as an actor. Was acting something you always wanted to do?

FV: Do you still get a case of the nerves before each show?

Dawn: Not usually, but some guests require a lot more preparation. If we have a big guest, I hope the interview will go well. It’s really important to listen, and when you have producers talking in your ear and a hosting aspect of the show to be aware of at the same time, there can be a bit of pressure. I would think that even someone like Barbara Walters might feel nervous with certain guests!

FV: You are also an award-winning jazz vocalist...

Dawn: It all started when we had Julia Havey,

author of The Vice Busting Diet, as a guest on the show. She’d lost 130 pounds and was very inspiring. I’m not your typical size-two TV personality, and I’ve also been at least 30 pounds bigger. I know what the average woman goes through, struggling with weight. FV: What is your ultimate goal on the Transformation Project?

When I started this, my body fat percentage was 36 percent, which is considered obese. My BMI was fine and my weight was normal – on the higher end, but normal. Nobody’s saying I’m obese! I could probably lose 20 pounds, but what am I prepared to do to make that happen? Well, I’m not prepared to not go to social events and have the odd glass of wine. I’m not prepared to not have dinner with my husband. I still need to live my life. The goal was to change my body composition, to be healthier in general, and for it to be sustainable.

Dawn: It’s about calories. Right now I’m on 1500 calories a day, and when I first started it was 1200, to initiate weight loss. The biggest focus is regulating my blood sugar. Never let yourself get too full and never let yourself get too hungry. You have to eat!

Dawn: For morning television we present a morning look – not much makeup. But I totally glam myself up for the stage. I typically do my hair in hot rollers – I know it’s old fashioned, but I love big hair! I use heavy eyeliner, dark eye shadows; neutral colours, but heavy. I love red lipstick. I love sequins, too – but you can’t beat a great black dress. It’s always flattering!

FV: What is the exercise component of the program?

Dawn: I’ve been working a bit with personal trainer Tommy Europe, as well as doing Bar Method, and I’ve just started doing Ugi Fit, which I love! I’m no stranger to the gym; I’ve been working out on and off for years. But finding something sustainable is key. And I find with the early start to my work day I get really tired and have trouble fitting in my workout. I just remind myself that there’s a mom out there with four kids who’s really tired, too, and she still manages to fit it in. My excuses aren’t more valid than anyone else’s!

FV: Are you noticing a difference?

Dawn: I’ve noticed a difference in my face, and I can see it in my hips. Because I was bigger at one point there’s a body image thing that happens, where you never see yourself the way other people see you. It’s part of being a woman, unfortunately. In my personal experience, the

You can learn so much by having your makeup professionally done once or twice, and any woman can go to a makeup counter to have it done.

that really translates in your skin, in how you walk... As you get older you get more confident as well. I do have to worry about my hair and clothes on television.

FV: What are your best skincare secrets?

Dawn: There was a time in my life when I was not happy, and my skin was one big blemish – I couldn’t even smile because it was so painful.

The minute I eliminated that unhappiness, it disappeared. If you’re not doing the right things for yourself, your body will tell you. In the last two years I’ve really focussed on making sure I moisturize. I love Dermalogica’s anti-oxidant mist and microfoliant. I also need a really good cleanser and eye makeup remover, since we wear so much makeup on television. I try to 16

FV: With so much going on in your busy life, how do you relax at the end of a hectic week?

Dawn: I sit at home, read, cook, hang out on my balcony. I walk on the seawall. Chilling out for me means no makeup, hair in a ponytail, doing nothing. I’d like to do more yoga. I can be a sensitive person and when I was doing yoga, I found it easier to deal with things, to not get upset or sad as easily.

FV: What can we expect next for Dawn Chubai?

Dawn: I’ve always been a “go with the flow” kind of girl. It keeps me laid back, but maybe doesn’t make me go after things enough. But I’m very content with where I am right now.

T

here’s no question that women have advanced leaps and bounds from their days at home baking cookies, folding laundry and reading bedtime stories (flashback to Mrs. Cleaver). Not to say they’re not still doing all of those things, but in addition they’re running companies, completing triathlons, caring for aging parents and sitting on non-profit committees and boards, making a difference in their communities. But my question is: can this pace be sustainable?

As a business advisor, having worked with hundreds of professional women, I have heard the struggles that are really going on as women attempt to be all things to all people. Their natural nurturing abilities and willingness to take responsibility have given them great opportunity, but taking on too much leaves women feeling overwhelmed, unfulfilled, ineffective and exhausted.

I think it’s time to let go of this idea that we need to be superwomen in order to be worthy and valuable. We need to be okay with asking for help and admitting when we don’t have it all together. If culinary skills aren’t our strong suit, why put ourselves (and our families) through the agony of trying to host a sit-down dinner party? If we’re agonizing over missing bedtime stories and snuggles with our kids, why are we sitting on a board that meets in the evening?

When we are not feeling well, why don’t we just stay home that day and take care of ourselves?

The truth is: this way of being in the world for women is pretty new. It wasn’t that long ago that women’s roles were very clearly defined, understood and fulfilled. However, as our roles have expanded and responsibilities increased, it’s becoming obvious that another shift is necessary. It’s time to create a new way, a way in which we honour ourselves as women, share our unique gifts and talents with the world and drop the overwhelming expectations of unrealistic proportion that don’t serve us.

Three Steps to Redefining You

The first thing we need to do is give ourselves permission to be totally authentic. The very idea of having to be something you’re not puts your system under stress. I’m not suggesting that you stop all desire for self-improvement and personal development. I’m suggesting you take a step back, connect with the core of YOU, and make decisions, set goals and reach for aspirations from that place. Most of us are so used to making decisions based on how they will affect everyone else that we’ve actually lost touch with our innermost truth. It’s time to stop the madness, drop the ‘have tos’ and ‘shoulds’ and move to a place of authentic want and desire.

The second thing we need to do is make time and create space for self-care. I know this sounds totally selfish – and it should; it is selfish. However, for far too long we’ve been

running around trying to be of service from a half-empty cup at best. It’s going to be a challenge for those not accustomed to this way of being, but let me assure you, everyone wins when you make this shift. And it doesn’t have to be enormous. I’m not suggesting you take off on holiday and leave your family at home.

Instead, make small changes, like taking a half hour in the morning to go for a short walk, meditate, practice yoga, write in your journal or do any other activity that makes your heart sing. Before you make breakfast, pack lunches and listen to a conference call, make some time for you.

Lastly, we need to educate those around us about what we need, what we want, what we’re willing to do and what we want to let go of.

This is usually the most daunting and scary of tasks for a recovering superwoman. The idea of stepping down from the parent advisory board, taking your name off the volunteer list for your favourite charity or telling your friends that it’s a pizza party instead of a five-course meal can be scary. It’s new; it’s a change, so of course it’s going to be a bit scary. Feel the fear, and do it anyway!

Your true power comes from inside of you, not from the outside world’s opinion of you, and tapping into this infinite resource will forever change the trajectory of your life. It’s time to step into your authentic power. In doing so, you’ll become a role model for other women to follow as they too recognize their pace is not sustainable, and that quality of life and relationships are far more important than a list of unfulfilling accomplishments.

Perfect Complexion

elieve it or not, the types of food and drink that make up your typical diet have a significant impact on the condition and tone of your skin. Maintaining a healthy complexion is rarely achieved by the use of topical lotions alone. To overcome a skin condition, the healing process is a little more skin deep than your average “cleanse-tonemoisturize� routine. Making changes to your diet is often the only way to see long-term positive results.

Balancing Hormones

Acne is often associated with an imbalance of sex hormones. High levels of testosterone stimulate an excessive production of sebum from skin pores.

This results in skin pores becoming clogged and infected. Although frequent cleansing with an astringent cleanser is essential to prevent pores becoming infected, diet is also important for acne. Testosterone levels can become elevated in women due to high stress (work, emotional or chemical) and excessive caffeine intake. For both men and women, a deficiency of the minerals zinc and magnesium can also lead to hormone imbalances.

Cutting out caffeine and increasing foods rich in zinc and magnesium such as pumpkin seeds, fish and green leafy vegetables can help to address acne from the inside out.

3. Hydrate! Be sure to drink enough water. Try to drink 6 to 8 glasses daily to hydrate from the inside out.

4. Reduce stress. Practice calming activities such as mini walk breaks or breathing exercises. These help your brain reduce cortisol production, a contributor to acne (and belly fat!).

5. Protect your skin! Wear sunscreen rain or shine with high SPF and UVA protection to ensure you are protecting your skin from the rays that accelerate aging.

6. Eat up! Berries, dark leafy greens, green tea, and cacao are rich in antioxidants that are proven to decrease oxidative stress. Beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains are rich in zinc, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and helps metabolize Omega-3s.

Good Oils for Good Skin

The skin is made up of three layers.

The middle layer, the dermis, has very quick cell turnover. Nutrients that aid in the manufacturing of a healthy dermis and help to prevent scarring include vitamin E and the essential fatty acids, Omega 3, 6 and 9. These are found in nuts, seeds and fish and have been shown in numerous clinical studies to be of great benefit to the skin. Just like saturated fats, the fatty acids present in essential fats are converted into hormone-like substances, but unlike saturated fats, those generated from essential fats are beneficial. here are few beauty looks that scream spring and summer like a bold lip colour. From the runway to the streets, bold lips are popping up everywhere this season. Shades of hot pink, bright coral, and fuchsia, first spotted adorning the mouths of models at the spring/summer 2011 runway shows, now light up the lips of some of Tinseltown’s most lustedafter celebs. Bright lip makeup is an important trend this summer, and these pucker-popping shades range in textures from ultra-matte to super-slick.

If you are trying to update your overall look this summer, bold lip makeup is one of the easiest and most effective ways to do it. When choosing the right colour for your lips, a good rule of thumb is to choose a shade of lip colour that complements your skin tone. Fair skin tones suit pink undertones, medium skin tones suit blue-based shades, olive skin tones suit orange-based shades, and dark skin tones can carry off plummy undertones.

Bright lips can be intimidating, and knowing how to incorporate it into your daily makeup regimen this summer can seem a bit challenging at first, but if you follow these simple steps, you can easily create a bombshell, vibrant lip that will last throughout the day and the evening!

Keep Your Makeup Simple

When rocking a radiant pout, you want your mouth to be the centre of attention; however, you do want a flawless, natural-looking base. Apply foundation and conceal any areas of darkness such as under the eyes, and correct any imperfections. Put a little concealer on the lip area also, as this helps the true colour of the lipstick be represented and improves the longevity of the lipstick. A little setting powder and bronzer helps to make this look appear fresh and summery. If you want a little pop of neutral colour on the eyes that complements the bright lip, try NARS Eye Shadow Duo in ‘Alhambra’. Curl your lashes and apply one or two coats of black or brown mascara.

Don’t Over-draw Your Lip Line

Keep it looking effortless, not clownish. Follow your natural lip line, fill in the lip area by ‘feathering’ it in, and line your lips with a shade of liner that is closer to your natural lip colour than your lip stick. Apply lipstick, then perfect the line with the same liner afterwards. For a more natural look, use your finger tip and pat the colour onto your mouth, building the colour until you reach the desired opacity.

Don’t Match Lips and Duds

I know it seems like a bright idea at first, but in reality, matching your lipstick to your outfit is a big no-no. A punch of colour can be fun, but too much at once is overkill. Simplicity is key. Stick with neutral-toned clothes that draw attention to your lips, not away from them. If you are wearing bright clothing, then go for a light application of a contrasting bright tone for a modern twist, or stick with the lovely neutral lip colours which also abound this season.

Exude Confidence

Bold lips may be all the rage this season, but the real trick to pulling off this trend is the poise that comes with it. Wear your makeup; don’t let it wear you!

A High-flying Girls’ Getaway in Nanaimo A

fter moving from big city Vancouver to small city Nanaimo, I lured my mainland girlfriends here with a weekend getaway they were powerless to resist. The hook: Nanaimo’s lively Commercial Street has just been named the “greatest street in Canada,” and I’m about to surprise them with all there is to do in my hometown harbour city. They’re arriving in style aboard a Tofino Air flight that left 20 minutes ago and is about to land in Nanaimo Harbour.

Right on time, they burst into the room like a bouquet of flowers, ready for the fun to begin. I’ve enlisted some expert advice, lining up a weekend that covers all the bases: fitness, adventure, fine dining and serenity. “Destination getaway designer” Charlene SanJenko of Distinctly West Coast Divas has helped me custom design an itinerary that fits my friends to a T. First up, we’re going on a First Nations paddling adventure.

The Nanaimo Harbour Ferry picks us up in Maffeo Sutton Park, a five-minute walk from the seaplane terminal along the scenic Harbourfront Walkway. Our destination is Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park, where an Alberni Outpost guide is taking us out on a paddle tour aboard an eight-seat Coast Salish replica big canoe. We learn to raise our paddles high as a sign of peace on our return into Mark Bay. We’re pumped about coming back again to rent Alberni Outpost’s bikes and GPS devices to go geo-caching around the island’s secret middens, champagne raccoon groves and sandstone beaches.

Next, we drop everyone’s bags off at the stylish Coast Bastion Inn just half a block off Commercial Street. The girls are suitably impressed by the art galleries, antique bookstores, cafes, boutiques and street buskers that make this Canada’s greatest street. Commercial Street is anchored by the sophisticated Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC), where we tour the interactive Nanaimo Museum and pop in to

see the beautifully restored $3 million E.J. Hughes mural, rescued from a demolished downtown hotel. In the VICC’s elegant lobby, we take a walk under hand-blown bocce pendant lighting that is reminiscent of our famous West Coast rain. We peek into the high-tech Shaw Auditorium and the gorgeous ballroom, making mental notes to pass our impressions on to the event planners and brides-to-be in our circle. They’ll be pleased that we found this high-calibre island venue so close to Vancouver.

We take a quick side-trip up the hill to shop at the Old City Quarter. En route, we wave at a group of smiling tourists in the lobby of the Painted Turtle Guesthouse, Nanaimo’s deluxe downtown hostel. Hungry, we set off next to explore the Nanaimo Bar Trail. First stop is the Modern Cafe for appetizers and a Nanaimo Bar Martini, made with strings of chocolate sauce, laced with vodka and crème de cacao, a shot of espresso and a splash of coconut syrup. From Smile Stress to

t is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. But when that picture is one of you, are you truly happy with what it says? Or do you feel that your pictures fail to portray the confident smile and vibrant image that you long to project?

If so, then rest assured: you’re not alone! As a skilled artisan dentist who has had the privilege of helping numerous people experience the smile of their dreams, I can tell you that this is quite common. I can also share that what’s typically underlying this unhappiness is the misalignment between a person’s self-image, and the image portrayed by their picture.

As a result, people who aren’t happy with their smile will – often without knowing – compensate by consciously or unconsciously avoiding situations where they have to smile; because deep inside, they feel that something’s “wrong.” Tragically, these people don’t live up to their full potential, nor do they reap the rewards of a smile-filled life, which studies indicate includes a greater likelihood of career success, good health, strong relationships and overall happiness.

They still believe that dentists are the people you go to when you have a toothache, or to have your teeth cleaned a couple of times a year. They aren’t aware of the remarkable possibilities offered by modern dentistry. And just as interesting and important to note is that this phenomenon applies to people at all stages of

success and from all walks of life – even, as you’ll discover in a moment, those aspiring to be the next Miss Universe® Canada.

Miss Universe was Missing Something

As a Miss Universe® Canada contestant, Jocelyn Lernout is beautiful – in fact, she radiates. Being European, this is what feels right for me and it really suits the Mandula collections, which possess a worn, old-European, pre-apocalyptic feel.

FV: Tell us about your favourite items of clothing...

FV: You also spend much of your time in Los Angeles. What draws you to LA?

Mandula: I find Los Angeles to be a fascinating, energetic and colourful city. It has a strong history within the fashion and arts industries.

In comparison, Vancouver is far younger and less developed in those areas. Vancouver is more down to earth, slower-paced and has a beautiful natural environment. I get balanced being in these two cities.

lashbulbs illuminated the Okanagan skies, but celebrity status was not required for star treatment at the third annual Osoyoos Celebrity Wine Festival. Festival-goers were an eclectic mix of recognized faces from music, television and media; Olympic athletes; several highly respected wine aficionados; and of course the self-proclaimed, but equally credited, purveyors of good times.

Spirit Ridge Resort extended a warm welcome to the festival as the hosts of the Sunset Sabre Soiree. The bubbles flowed courtesy of Summerhill Pyramid Winery. Watermark Beach Resort and wine personality Jay Drysdale uncorked an afternoon of excitement when they challenged a panel of experts to a “blind tasting” between the best of BC and iconic Syrahs from around the world.

Music, food and wine made the evening divine at the Celebrity Wine Auction and Beach Party. Walnut Beach Resort boasted a celeb-studded line-up for this event featuring award-winning singer/ songwriter George Canyon and the Celebrity Auction, where an evening with the Kovac brothers commanded top dollar, with proceeds going to benefit the United Way of the South Okanagan Children’s Charities.

The launch of the 2011 Nota Bene was an afternoon of perfect pairings at the Blackhills Estate Vineyard sampling the wines of winemaker Graham Pierce while sister and artist Adrienne Pierce performed the world premiere of her Blackhills inspired compilation.

Chardonnay? Chardon-yay! The Vinos Wine Commercial Competition had the crowd roaring as they sipped the Okanagan’s best before dancing the night away at Watermark Beach and Resort. The festival came to a tasteful close with the Art of Wine at La Mirada lakefront suites. A wine tasting with David Walker complemented the artwork of Jason Go-Go and several other notable BC artists, with a surprise acoustic performance by award-winning musician Oscar Lopez. Our memory cards full, we made the trek back to Vancouver already making plans for next year.

Quinoa Salad

M

ost of us enjoy a culinary adventure out on the town, and with the rich and diverse collection of restaurant cuisines in Vancouver, you are never out of ideas on your list of candidates for your next dining out experience. However, if you wish to eat out healthy, the list shortens significantly. Here is some inspiration for two flavourful dishes from Yaletown’s r.tl (regional tasting lounge).

All About Quinoa

South American in origin, quinoa (/ˈkiːnwɑː/) is a grain-like food dating back 7000 years. In ancient times, quinoa’s popularity was secondary only to potatoes. Quinoa is light and fluffy with a pleasing, slightly nutty flavour similar to couscous or rice. Quinoa is commonly white, red or black in colour, and comes already processed (to remove its saponins).

Interestingly, quinoa is not actually a grain, and is in the same family of crop as spinach and beets. Quinoa contains essential amino acids like lysine and good amounts of calcium, phosphorus and iron, and is a complete protein source (14 percent of its dry weight) for humans, which is a rare quality among plants, hence a great choice for vegetarian diets also.

Considering it is gluten-free yet grain-like, it is also a great candidate for ingredient replacement in celiac diets. Quinoa has very high dietary fibre (7 percent of its dry weight), much like cereals, as well as magnesium and zinc.

Quinoa Salad

A vegan, gluten-free salad high in proteins and fibre.

1 cup organic red quinoa 1 cup organic white quinoa 3 cups cold water 1 cup corn kernels 1 sweet red pepper, finely diced 2 ripe avocados, sliced 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped 1 lemon, juiced 2 tbsp virgin olive oil Bring quinoa and water in a large pan to boil on medium heat. Reduce heat to simmer and cover the pot until the water is absorbed.

Quinoa will be tender but still firm. Meanwhile, toss and roast the corn in a dry pan over medium heat, until a little browned. Mix all ingredients except avocados, and season to taste.

Portion into four serving bowls and garnish with avocado.

1.5 cups chicken stock 5 stems fresh parsley 1 tbsp cumin 1 tbsp coriander 1 tsp hot Paprika 1 pinch Saffron 2 bay leaves 6 cardamom pods 1 cinnamon stick Garnish: harissa, preserved lemon rind (minced), chopped parsley, rose water Grind and mix all spices. In a heavy-bottomed sauce pan, sweat the carrot and shallots in the olive oil until slightly softened. Add garlic and sweat for one more minute. Season the quail and add to pot along with figs, parsley stems, chicken stock, and spices. Cover and cook over low heat for 15 minutes until cooked through. Garnish and serve with bread or couscous.

Heart Rate and “Zone” Training

eople exercise for many reasons.

Some strive for improved health, increased energy or stress relief, while others are focused on losing body fat and looking great. Whatever your motivation, it makes sense that you’d like to see maximum benefit from your efforts.

When planning your training program, it can be helpful to categorize fitness activities into different modes. Three primary categories are resistance training, cardiovascular training and functional conditioning (think boot camp). In all of these exercise modes, there are perforRob Williams mance indicators that will help you measure intensity and monitor progress. By keeping an eye on these indicators, you can adapt your training approach and maximize your results.

In the case of resistance training, the performance indicators most often emphasized are extrinsic, or outside of the body. These might include the amount of weight lifted, the number of repetitions performed or the rest intervals between sets. With cardiovascular training and functional conditioning activities, there are numerous extrinsic indicators as well. However, one of the most important measures of performance relates to how your body is responding to the work being done. This intrinsic indicator is your heart rate.

Everyone has their own resting heart rate level and heart rate response to exercise. These vary with different factors, such as genetic predisposition, age, gender, fitness level, stress, altitude, body temperature and hydration levels. Because of the direct relationship between the demands of exercise and the body’s heart rate response, the idea of heart rate training zones has long been accepted as a method of gauging exercise intensity and measuring changes in your fitness level. These zones are also widely used as guidelines for exercise prescription. The theory is that by training in the right zone, you can target the desired physiological response, such as fat-burning or aerobic improvement.

Get In the Zone

There are multiple schools of thought when it comes to heart rate training zones. The National Academy of Sports Medicine suggests using three zones, representing 60 to 75 percent, 80 to 85 percent, and 86 to 90 percent of maximum heart rate, respectively. Others in the industry describe five different zones: • Very Light (50 to 60 percent HR max) – Healthy Heart Zone: improved well-being, general health, weight management.

• Light (60 to 70 percent HR max) – Fat Burning Zone: improved endurance, high percentage of fat burned during exercise, longer bouts of exercise.

• Moderate (70 to 80 percent HR max) – Aerobic Zone: significant improvements in cardio-respiratory capacity for health and fitness, longer exercise durations.

• Hard (80 to 90 percent HR max) – Anaerobic Threshold Zone: improved anaerobic performance during intervals or short duration training • Very Hard (90 to 100 percent HR max) – Redline Zone: maximum performance and speed during very short bursts of exercise.

Whichever model you choose to adopt, the underlying principle is that by monitoring your heart rate during exercise and adapting the intensity of the exercise to keep your heart rate within certain zones, you can target specific physical and functional improvements.

Establish Your Training Zones

You should begin by calculating your maximum heart rate in beats per minute (bpm), which will allow you to establish your training zones. This can be done by performing a maximal functional capacity test, using a bicycle or treadmill ergometer, or more commonly with a recognized mathematical formula for age-predicted maximal heart rate. One formula is: 220 – (your age) = max heart rate (in bpm). For a 40-year-old, this formula would give a suggested maximal heart rate of 180 bpm. You can then apply the percentages to determine your zones. For this 40 year-old, staying within the Aerobic Zone would mean keeping the heart rate between 70 and 80 percent of 180, or between 126 and 144 beats per minute.

To be sure you are staying within the desired training zone, you’ll need to monitor your heart rate during exercise. This can be performed manually by feeling your pulse and counting the number of beats during a timed period, or more conveniently by using a digital heart rate monitor. A monitor will consistently display your heart rate while you exercise and can be set to alert you if you’ve left your specified training zone.

Think of heart rate monitoring during exercise like using the speedometer in your car. It’s a good idea to check regularly to make sure you’re in the right zone.

Home Pedicure Tips for Summer

e all know that as soon as the flip-flops come out, the soles of our feet take a beating! Here are a few summertime tips to keep your feet looking fabulous in your sexy summer sandals, and extend the life of your pedicure to your next summer party!

File Away

Using a pedicure file for just 10 seconds per foot each day in the shower will ensure that you won’t get those dreaded cracks in your heels. This small effort on a daily basis will give your feet the time they need to adjust slowly to having fewer calluses in those areas. You want to ensure that you are using a foot file rather than another tool. Pumice stones will harbour bacteria and cause more problems, and anything that has a blade or grater on it will cause your calluses to come back faster and thicker than before. Remember: your feet build calluses to protect from the wear and tear of walking, so “less is more” when it comes to foot filing.

Care for Your Cuticles

When pushing back your cuticles, use a clean cuticle pusher and make sure the cuticles have been softened, whether from the shower or soaking your feet in a basin of warm water. Pushing the cuticles back when they are dry will cause splitting and unnecessary hang nails. There is no need to clip anything on your cuticles when regular maintenance is performed.

Buff and Base Coat

To get longer wear out of your toenail polish, first buff the tops of your nails with a fine grit file. This will etch the nails slightly to give your polish a little something to hold on to. Also be sure to use a polish remover before applying your base coat to get off any excess oils that may still be on the nail plate. Nail polish can be extremely harsh on the nail, dehydrating it as well as causing white burns on the surface of the nails.

ALWAYS use a base coat. This will provide a protective layer between your toenail and the polish.

Shine On

The top coat is equally important; it protects the polish from chipping and gives it a beautiful shiny finish. Once you notice your polish starting to dull a little, reapply another layer of top coat. This will breathe new life into lacklustre polish. Pastels are big this year, as well as the infamous Shatter colours that are absolutely stunning for women who want to be a bit edgy.

Scrub-a-dub

Use a good abrasive scrub on your feet and legs to stimulate circulation and slough off any dead skin cells that tend to accumulate on the top of the feet and between the toes. Use an exfoliant infused with peppermint or eucalyptus essential oils; this will be ultra-stimulating for the legs and feet and leave you feeling refreshed. This will also help women who are prone to ingrown leg hairs.

Plastic Surgeon

Y

ou are thinking of having cosmetic surgery: perhaps a breast enhancement, a facelift, or removal of that loose skin on your tummy from having kids. You’ve read or seen some great things – but also some scary things. So where do you start?

Relax. Take your time; do your research. Like anything else, impulse buying can be hazardous. It is so much easier now than just a few years ago. Careful, patient research is still needed, but now much of the initial work can be done in privacy, online, at a time and place of your choosing.

Do Your Research

Only a few years ago, the initial inquiry was nearly always a secretive discussion with staff at a hair or estheticians’ salon, a recommendation from a family doctor, or a cold call to a plastic surgeon from a Yellow Pages ad.

Today, nearly every patient we see has done prior research on the internet, and usually has begun the process with email inquiries. This can give you a great deal of information related to your main concerns, and also tell you something about how the surgeon practices, as well as how the office staff responds to you and where the surgery is done.

Other sources of information may be useful or unreliable, depending on the individual situation. Your family doctor may be a resource person and may make a recommendation or give a list of several names. How reliable he or she is depends on a number of factors, including whether his or her personal philosophy is positive or negative towards aesthetic surgery. Many patients do not ask their personal physician because they believe, rightly or wrongly, that their doctor disapproves of aesthetic surgery or considers it frivolous. It usually is worthwhile to keep your family doctor informed of your intentions. Most would be interested in finding a good surgeon for their patients. This is a good place to start, along with your internet research. You may need to dig just a little bit deeper to be reasonably certain as to how qualified a surgeon is to deal with your particular concerns.

Word of mouth has always been the way much of this information has been spread. Today this means online forums, reviews and social media. Unfortunately, these methods are notoriously unreliable and subject to manipulation. An old adage says: A happy patient tells one or two people; an unhappy patient tells ten. Today, they can type in a few words, press a keystroke, and tell the entire world. And all surgeons, unless they do not operate, have occasional problems (complications).

Qualify Your Surgeon

Certification in plastic surgery means eight years pre-medical and medical school, followed by six years of residency in plastic surgery leading up

to grueling certification exams given by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. And there is often more, such as a fellowship, or further training, in one or more areas of special interest, be it hand surgery, burns, facial injuries, or cosmetic surgery. There is just no substitute for this kind of comprehensive training. And then there is experience, for which there is no substitute. This isn’t to say a newly minted surgeon can’t do great surgery, but years of experience in any field of work make a difference.

Not all cosmetic surgery is done by plastic surgeons. Many non- plastic surgeons have been attracted to the “free market” of cosmetic surgery.

Many persons not certified as plastic surgeons or even surgeons, or sometimes even as medical doctors (dentists, osteopaths, etc.), are now doing cosmetic surgery. Beware of those who claim membership of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery or similar “self-designated” boards not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. Ask if the surgeon is certified and, most important, in what field. Ask to see the appropriate certificates. Membership in the following plastic surgery societies is also a good indicator: the Canadian Society for Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

You still need to have an in-person consultation, which may last anywhere from half an hour to an hour. You might not choose the first surgeon you see. Different surgeons will give you different advice, and you need to listen carefully and decide whether his or her approach, compassion, skills, and office staff will give you the best advice and solution possible.

In the end, whether or not a surgeon is right for you depends on many factors, including their qualifications, training and experience, their compassion as a doctor, their staff, and their surgical abilities.

The Risks of Low-Level Radiation

A

fter the recent disaster in Japan, radiation concerns were front and centre here in Canada, over 4,500 miles away from the source of the damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima. Nuclear disasters like this always garner headlines because we have a Hollywood-based notion that radiation exposure is going to turn people and animals into three-headed, grotesque monsters. The simple reality is that low-level radiation is always around us: from the granite in our countertops and radon gas in basements to cosmic radiation and solar flares from space.

In Vancouver, the average person receives a small amount of radiation every year from various sources. The radiation detected from Japan and Chernobyl registered barely a blip on province-wide charts. Manmade exposures to radiation are also common, from smoke detectors in our homes to air travel. In fact, the largest man-made exposure to radiation comes from life-saving medical devices such as x-rays, CT scans and radiotherapy treatments.

So why is there so much concern about radiation? With increasingly high levels of exposure, radiation is known to cause transient ill effects, cancer or death. These ill effects predictably begin after the whole body has been exposed to high levels of radiation – meaning levels about 50 times higher than what we receive in the course of a year, but nowhere near the carcinogenic and fatal effects of atom bombs and nuclear disasters.

Low-Level Radiation Risks

A major current concern is with low-level radiation, either from a single exposure or from cumulative exposures. With low-level radiation, the cancer effects may occur anywhere from five to more than 20 years after the inciting event.

Diagnostic medical exposure to radiation is most prevalent from CT scanners. A CT scan of the lower spine can result in radiation exposures up to 15 times higher than that of an x-ray. The effects of CT radiation are difficult to predict, but are in the spotlight from recent events – including the effects of overexposure at a world recognized medical facility, and a multitude of medical journal articles raising the specter of cancer induction from this life-saving tool.

The concern about radiation from CT scanners has prompted the state of California to pass a new bill, which will go into effect January 2012, requiring hospitals to record the dose of radiation produced during a CT examination on every image of a study, and to chart this radiation dose in the patient’s permanent medical record. In addition, the

American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) have campaigns to record radiation doses from CT studies much like immunization records. With their Image Gently and Image Wisely campaigns, these radiology organizations are recommending medical facilities and radiologists pledge to reduce radiation exposure and reliance on CT scans for diagnostic imaging studies. Reducing radiation exposure from CT scans is particularly important for females and young people who, over their lifetime, are more susceptible to cancer-causing effects from radiation. With guidance from the ACR, RSNA and soon California state law, vendors are being pushed to develop CT equipment with lower radiation, without loss of diagnostic accuracy.

Avoiding Diagnostic Radiation Exposure

Current alternatives to CT scans do exist for patients who are concerned about radiation exposure, including ultrasound and MRI. In a document posted on the Image Wisely website from Nov 2010, Dr Diego Martin writes that “for most clinical problems where CT is used to evaluate disease in the body, MRI provides an acceptable, or favorable alternative” and “MRI should be seen as a primary diagnostic method for a growing number of common indications, particularly for liver, pancreas, kidney, bowel, gynecological, prostatic and vascular diseases.” It is well known that MRI is superior to CT in evaluating the brain and spine. However, the downside of MRI or ultrasound is that they are more time consuming.

With the plethora of current medical literature surrounding CT radiation, more and more doctors are becoming aware of alternative forms of diagnostic imaging that don’t carry increased cancer risks. With advances in MRI technology and ongoing radiation concerns, it is predicted that in the not-too-distant future, CT scanners will be used mainly for trauma and lung tissue evaluation. This October, let’s all celebrate the 40th anniversary of the invention of the CT scanner and recognize that our diligence in recording radiation from necessary CT studies will allow future generations to predictably know the risks of its life-saving radiation exposure.

Anyone Can Do It!

eing thin and in shape does not come easily to me. I have never been one of those people who can eat or drink whatever they want, and I’m no cardio nut. In fact, a knee injury from a few years ago actually makes running, spinning or aerobics out of the question. It’s not unusual for me to be carrying a few extra pounds, but getting angry and screaming profanities at the mirror because I don’t look the way I want doesn’t help!

A few months ago, I made the decision to compete in a fitness competition. I knew I would have to sacrifice margarita nights and lazy Sunday sleep-ins, but I wanted to give myself a challenge. Sure, everyday life is a challenge, but I wanted to do something that was all mine. I wanted to take myself somewhere I had never been before, mentally and physically. So I watched my sister wave goodbye as she left for an all-girls Vegas weekend without me, and I made my plan. For 12 weeks I was going to stay focused and change my life.

It was hard. Nobody around me was doing this.

Photo Credit: Jason Simpson Why was I? I watched my business partner order her second glass of my favourite wine and I wanted to scream. I went to a wedding and packed my own dinner. I felt like crying when I saw the dessert table, but I stayed focused and woke up the next day with a huge smile on my face. The wine and the tiramisu would be there when I got to the end of my journey, and I was keeping my eye on the prize. I was starting to believe in myself and it felt good.

I slowly watched my body transform. All of a sudden, the guacamole did not seem so important. If this is what I could look like by skipping indulgences, then who cared?! The confidence and determination that

was growing inside of me was like a drug. I started seeing success in everything I did. I became a better mother, wife and business partner. As I got closer to the competition, I became stronger every day, and when I looked in the mirror, I was amazed by how I felt. This was the body I was destined for!

I entered the contest and placed third. The competition was fierce and I was bursting with pride at having stood beside these amazing athletes and come out a winner. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life. My family came to support me and everyone had so much fun. I immediately started thinking about next year….

Anyone can do this. Diet is 70 percent of the transformation (I followed the Vidadish portion control system) and sticking with a workout that fits your schedule is key. For me, if it doesn’t happen in the first two hours of waking, it doesn’t ever happen. And that means no change. Isn’t that why we’re here? To grow, change and challenge ourselves? Life is too short not to give it a try. You never know: there could be a fitness competitor locked up inside you, dying to get out and stand on that stage. Let her out, and see what happens. It might just change your life.

The Structure of Your Body’s Pain

he word osteopathy originates from the two Greek words “osteone,” which means structure, and “pathos,” which means pain. Osteopathic treatment is based on the concept that the structure of the body affects how it will function and that it functions as a unified whole. In other words, if there is a problem or restriction in one part of the body, then all the other parts are affected in some way and often there is pain. Osteopathy uses gentle, manual techniques to release these restrictions so normal function can ensue and the pain is decreased or eliminated.

Dr. Andrew Taylor Still developed the concept of osteopathy. Discouraged with conventional medicine in 1864 after he lost four of his children to disease, he searched for a drugless, hands-on approach to medicine, which he named osteopathy.

Cranial Osteopathy: Cranial osteopathy is based on Sutherland’s concept that the bones of the cranium do not fuse with age and there is some micro-movement occuring at the sutures.

When cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is produced in the brain, the brain expands. This creates a tension on the dura that surrounds it, causing the cranial bones to move in a rhythmical pattern.

The tension in the dura at one end is transmitted along the spinal cord to the other end, causing the sacrum to have a rhythmical motion

Three Methods of Osteopathic Treatment

Osteopathic treatment aims to restore optimal health by treating the primary restriction and not just treating the compensations (or symptoms). Osteopathy includes three major methods of treatment: structural osteopathy, cranial osteopathy and visceral manipulation. The art of osteopathy is understanding how these three systems affect each other, and how to blend treatment techniques from all three for the greatest therapeutic effect.

Structural Osteopathy: Structural techniques mobilise joints and relieve tension in muscles, ligaments and fascia. Fascia is a continuous system of connective tissue which surrounds the entire structure of the body – even the lungs and digestive organs. Fascia can become short or adherent to other structures with poor biomechanics, poor posture or when injury or trauma has occurred. Due to its continuous nature throughout the body, an area of fascial tension like a scar can create pain and discomfort in seemingly unrelated areas of the body. Structural techniques can help release this and improve nerve function and circulation.

Visceral Manipulation: Visceral manipulation is based on the principle that organs normally have mobility in response to the body moving and to normal bodily functions. Restrictions caused by surgeries, scars, infections, immobile joints and altered nerve conduction affect the functioning of the organs. Osteopathy offers gentle treatment techniques for the organs and the fascia that supports them, which can improve function by restoring proper motion. It is, however, important to seek medical advice for complete diagnosis of medical conditions.

Osteopathic treatment is adapted to each individual and is suitable for clients of all ages, from newborns to seniors. Conditions treated by osteopathy include: joint dysfunction, arthritic pain, back and neck pain, whiplash, headaches, jaw problems, soft tissue injuries (sprains, tendinopathies), nerve pain (sciatica, tingling, numbness), difficult digestion (acid reflux, constipation), painful periods, chronic pelvic pain, bladder issues and pregnancy discomfort, plus colic, recurrent ear infections, and flattening of the head in babies. Many childhood issues can respond very positively to osteopathic intervention. The position that a baby adopts in the womb or a birth that is prolonged, too rapid, or assisted by forceps or vacuum can place considerable forces on a baby’s head. Cranial osteopathy can help mobilise and realign the bones of the head and jaw, and if orthodontia is necessary later it can help the cranium adapt to the changes.

Graduates of the Canadian College of Osteopathy (CCO) receive a diploma in osteopathic manual practice D.O.M.P. The training is an intensive five-year, part-time program open to health professionals or those who already hold a university degree in the health sciences. In BC, manual osteopaths are called “Osteopathic Practitioners” and have distinguished themselves from Osteopathic Physicians. Osteopathic practitioners are not medical doctors and practice the traditional osteopathic approach as developed

by Still and Sutherland. Osteopathy is covered in B.C. by most extended health care plans.

t’s that time of year again! Warm breezes, beautiful beaches, plungeable pools and… sunburns? Of all the “s” words we want to say this season (like summer, sunshine and swimming), sunburn is definitely not one of them. Sunburns are nasty, red reminders that we should have paid more attention to the most important “s” word of the season: SPF. Unfortunately, if it’s already happened, you need to know what you can do to help your skin heal.

Sure, there are those home treatments our mothers have kept in their arsenal of remedies, such as applying fresh aloe vera gel, a frozen cloth soaked in milk and even vinegar to soothe the irritation, but to help treat a sunburn we have to understand what it is and how it has affected the skin.

What Is Sunburn?

The honest answer is that sunburn begins as a tan – and is your skin’s worst enemy. A tan is the body responding to its exposure to UV rays, most commonly UVA and UVB rays (I call them “UV-Aging” or “UV-Burning” rays).

These harmful rays penetrate the layers of the skin, prompting the skin to release pigment (or melanin) to protect itself. There comes a point in exposure when the amount of UV rays penetrating the skin are so abundant that the skin cannot release pigment fast enough to protect itself from the UV, resulting in a burn with signs of redness, inflammation, tenderness, peeling and even blistering. Sunburn is a severe injury to the skin that causes wrinkles and can significantly increase your risk of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer.

The severity of the burn depends not only on how long you were exposed to the UV rays, but also how much pigment your body can create to protect itself. Darker skin types have the ability to create much more pigment than lighter skin types, which is why individuals with fair skin and light hair are at greater risk of burning faster and more aggressively than those with darker skin and hair.

Treating Your Sunburn

To effectively treat sunburn, we want to assist the skin in healing as much of the damage to its structures as we can by nourishing it with ingredients focused on repair, hydration and support. To soothe the redness and tenderness
