elcome to 2011! Does it feel different here? To me it does; I personally find it surreal.

I can’t believe 11 years have passed since I welcomed the new millennium – with a few too many margaritas at Squid Row in Cabo San Lucas, if I’m being totally honest!

While I am amazed and somewhat stunned that these years have gone by so quickly, I also look forward to what the second decade of this millennium will bring my way.

The first gift this new decade has brought me is an interview with one of the most fascinating women in all of Canada: the Mayor of Surrey, Dianne Watts. Mayor Watts is the first female mayor for the City of Surrey and was a runner-up for the World Mayor Prize in 2010. She radiates energy, charisma and intelligence, both professionally and in person. Completely comfortable and even vibrant in her own skin, she has shunned the sexlessness of the political sphere with her confident beauty and polished appearance.

We could all learn a lesson from Mayor Watts, myself included, because it’s terrifically important to look and feel your best, whether you’re a public figure, a business owner, a coffee barista or a mommy. No matter what you do, you are important and deserve everything life has to offer. Take care of your body, your skin, and your spirit, and let 2011 be the beginning of the most amazing love story – the one you create with yourself.

I

t has been my experience living in North America that most of our focus is on creating strength in our minds and our physical bodies. We are taught to be thinkers and doers. We have been rewarded, encouraged and praised for having high intellect, athleticism, and beauty. We push ourselves to excel in these areas and sometimes we do too much in an effort to be successful and accepted.

In reality, we are so much more than our minds and bodies. Society hasn’t rewarded or encouraged us to deal with our emotional states of being, development and growth. Many of us have never learned the tools we need to take us on the journey to discover our emotional, energetic and spiritual bodies. This has left us feeling out of balance and confused as to why we lack passion and motivation in our lives. Why don’t we feel the vital life force pulsing through our bodies?

An Emotional Pack Rat For fourteen years, I made my body my full-time job as a competitive fitness athlete. I was focusing on my physical body, so much so that it consumed most of my thoughts. In the last few years, I started to realize how little of my awareness was going to my emotional, energetic or spiritual body. I was so hyper-focused on working and working out that when I stopped to check in with my relationship to happiness, blissfulness and excitement, it simply wasn’t there. I wasn’t really getting excited about anything, and yet I felt I had every reason to be full of joy, excitement, happiness and tremendous gratitude.

I realized that I was failing to show up for myself. My emotional body was shut down and I wasn’t truly giving myself permission to feel. This was completely draining my personal power and vitality. Holding back emotions is a double-edged sword. In a subconscious effort to suppress feelings that were uncomfortable, like sadness, grief, fear and aggression, I also suppressed feelings of joy, excitement, and happiness. I believe many people live in this state of dynamic dysfunction. Emotion is emotion in whatever form it takes; it’s neither good nor bad. What becomes self-destructive is repressing emotions, rather than letting them be expressed in a healthy way. When we live life disconnected from our feelings, we lose our connection to a sense of purpose in life.

If you watch small children, you will see how they fully express their emotions as they feel them.

They cry when they need food or love or a diaper change; they may scream or throw a tantrum when they are angry. They express whatever they are feeling. By doing this, energy moves through them and is released. For many of us, the act of expressing emotion was never demonstrated by our parents; or perhaps we were told it was inappropriate behavior. This may have made us shut down and create avoidance when we felt emotions come up in the future, never really dealing with them or letting them go. It may not feel appropriate to throw a tantrum as an adult, but the energy is the same and needs to be released. But for most of us it all gets bottled up. We become emotional pack rats.

Create Intention to Move Energy What has helped me to release blocks and stuck energy is to create an intention about the emotions I am feeling. I then shift my ‘stuck’ energy through movement: yoga, dance, swimming, or just a hitting a pillow. Building heat, fire and intensity moves and releases anger. If I need to move sadness, then I do something slow and gentle that has a similar vibration.

Vitality is feeling alive in your body. Let the story come out and energetically release the trauma.

Once you unlock your emotional body, the energy moves in your other bodies. Your sprit body has room to play, to be creative and to be inspired. I now see exercise as a vehicle for moving stuck energy, rather than just building my body. I see all forms of exercise with clear intention as being moving meditations for emotional healing. By honoring my body and what I am actually feeling, I then move that energy and create openness and vitality.

In the western world, we are shut out from our feelings and this keeps us from experiencing our full array of emotions. Allowing our emotions to surface brings us to a heightened sense of life and vitality. Start now. Give yourself permission to feel, and start on your path to greater happiness and joy!

Help for Hips and Bust Yvonne knew there was a problem. The world of “stiletto bras” – those that looked pretty but couldn’t be walked in for long without a great deal of discomfort – had overtaken us.

Where were the “running shoe” bras we could wear all day, the bras that kept us healthy and in good shape? That healthy bra was missing from our underwear drawers, so Yvonne went on a mission to find it.

After spending a great deal of time and money seeking out the perfect bra, Yvonne realized she was going to have to manufacture her own. Her research brought her back to the support garments of the 40s and 50s to study the classic architecture of shapewear meant to do a job rather than simply look pretty. She determined the need for natural fabrics and an aesthetically pleasing flair. And then she made the TAB Bra.

Cosmetic Tooth Restorations:

The Future Has Arrived

I

t’s arguable that our world has undergone more technological growth in the last 10 years than in the last 100 years combined.

It seems that on a daily basis, we’re introduced to a fantastic new tool, platform, system or method that has been designed to make our lives better, faster, easier, more affordable and more comfortable.

And while this kind of transformative change has made its way to the world of modern dentistry (a topic near and dear Dr. Kelvin Mah to my heart that I’ve previously written about in these pages), there was always one area that lagged a bit behind: cosmetic tooth restoration. Fortunately, that’s all changed thanks to an amazing new technology and procedure called “ceramic reconstruction” or CEREC. I’ll discuss CEREC more in a moment, but first, let’s recap where we’ve come from.

The (Not So) Good Old Days In the past, patients who wanted to restore a chipped, broken, worn, or misshaped tooth were obliged to choose a traditional inlay, onlay or crown. For any of these, at least two trips to the dentist was required – but usually more, because the “temporary” that was installed while the “permanent” was being custom-made invariably fell off, or needed to be adjusted because it was so uncomfortable.

Additionally the new dental restoration product didn’t perfectly match up with the older tooth, so there was often a subtle difference in shading – which made patients feel awkward and self-conscious. While patients were generally happy with the strength and shape of their new teeth, they weren’t happy with the process, the time commitment, the discomfort, and the aesthetics. But that was before CEREC arrived on the scene and changed everything!

Transformative, Fast and Patient-Friendly CEREC CEREC uses cutting-edge computer technology, software and 3D cameras to take a stunningly accurate digital picture of a patient’s tooth. A skilled dentist then uses CEREC’s specialized CAD/CAM software to design the restoration, and sends it to an on-site milling machine that crafts a perfectly shaped ceramic partial tooth. This new restoration is then polished and inserted into the patient’s existing tooth. The result is a perfect match both in colour and in shape.

And that’s not even the best part: the entire process from taking the digital picture to milling a perfect restoration takes about 15 minutes and requires just one visit, as opposed to hours and multiple visits with traditional restorations. Of course, that’s just the high-level overview. What truly makes CEREC special is the wonderful benefits that it offers today’s patients. To explore these, let me introduce you to my patient, Leona.

Leona’s Smile Transformation Leona, a Vancouver resident and busy career woman, was born with what she calls “infamous Scottish teeth.” Growing up, she had endured spacers, braces, and retainers for years. And while these procedures reshaped her palette, made room for both of her eye teeth and straightened the rest, a number of teeth were filled with mercury – which gave her (again, in her words) “a mouth full of unsightly metal.” She was also very self-conscious of her smile, especially when she laughed, and was worried about the lingering health effects of all of that mercury. She wanted to replace failing old mercury fillings, but she wasn’t sure that a traditional crown or partial crown was the right solution. On top of that, her fillings were deteriorating and, therefore, dangerous; something had to be done sooner rather than later.

The Consultation As with all of my patients, I listened carefully to Leona’s concerns, and developed an understanding of her specific goals. In particular, I noticed and appreciated that Leona really didn’t like the idea of “going to the dentist” – a phenomenon that many people who aren’t familiar with modern dentistry experience. In fact, she had put off solving her problem for almost a year because her fear of dentistry was so powerful.

However, it didn’t take long for Leona to realize that modern dentistry is an entirely new experience, and that huge progress has been made in patient comfort and convenience. With the help of a 40-inch TV, I walked her through the cosmetic dental solutions that were available to

Before her and could help achieve her vision. As I expected, the moment she learned about CEREC she just knew that it was the solution for her – and here’s why: • One visit: As mentioned above, unlike traditional crowns, CEREC adds the new dental restoration in a single visit instead of multiple visits with traditional methods.

• Permanent: There’s no temporary crown that can pop off, and no emergency visits to the dentist to deal with awkward fittings or replacements.

• More comfort: No uncomfortable (and gooey!) dental mold is used – everything is done with the 3D camera.

• No mercury: CEREC isn’t the same as “filling” a tooth, so there’s no mercury involved and, thus, no oral health risk.

• Less invasive: CEREC materials are chemically bonded to the tooth, which means that compared to traditional crowns, more healthy tooth tissue is preserved.

• Strong: The new CEREC-reconstructed tooth is created by milling from a single ceramic block as opposed to being built up by hand at a dental lab. This is similar to how a Rolex watch is milled out of a single block of metal. The result is strength and durability.

• Appearance: The “chameleon like” nature of the special ceramic takes on the colour of the tooth, which results in a very precise match.

• Natural: When hot or cold drinks are consumed, the restoration and tooth expand and contract at about equal rates. This eliminates hot and cold sensitivity.

The Process I carefully prepared and contoured Leona’s teeth to maximize the strength of her new restorations –without removing any extra natural tooth structure from her existing teeth. I then performed a video survey of her sculpted teeth surfaces, and created her customized restorations with the help of CEREC’s powerful CAD/CAM software. I then milled with my on-site crown manufacturing system, and installed the restorations on top of her existing teeth. The process was rapid, quality-assured, and just as important, comfortable and painless for Leona.

The Results You can see from Leona’s pictures that she now has the brilliant “metal free” smile she’s always longed for. It only took a single visit to complete a quadrant of her mouth (we were moving ahead in stages), the colour match was perfect, and she couldn’t tell the difference between the new crowns and her natural teeth.

Leona reflects on her smile transformation: “The completed results have been incredible; I have no residual sensitivity, my bite is comfortable, and the product is very durable.

I have not had one single issue with my ‘new’ teeth. The entire process was pain free and relaxing. I found myself snoozing away in his chair as Dr. Mah diligently worked! CEREC technology is amazing and not many dentists have this process available, or have Dr. Mah’s incredible skill and ability to put patients at ease. I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Mah. He alleviated my fears of the dentist and gave me a new-found confidence in my smile, and has really boosted my self-esteem, which has helped me in many ways both professionally and personally. Frankly, I had no idea that modern dentistry had come such a long way – this is very different than what I remember dentistry being like as a kid. I’m happier with my smile than I ever imagined, and encourage anyone and everyone to explore and experience just how magical Dr. Mah is. I can’t get over how easy, and fast, it all was. I’m smiling all of the time now. My only regret is that I waited so long to see Dr. Mah and get it done!”

ayor Dianne Watts freely admits that she didn’t pursue a career in politics, but rather “fell into” one. Nor does she like politics much – or many politicians. Yet her refusal to “play politics” has been instrumental to her considerable accomplishment of turning the City of Surrey into a paradigm of growth, prosperity and community. Whether it’s her Buddhist belief system, her large, generous laugh, or her straight-talking smarts, Mayor Watts has that uncanny ability to connect with both the people of Surrey and those beyond its borders.

Mayor Dianne Watts: The People’s Politician, cont’d role. It’s important that people really feel an ownership of where they live. We all have a role to play, it’s not just up to a government to fix it.

FV: Recently you announced that you would not run for Premier in the wake of Gordon Campbell’s resignation. Can you tell us why?

Mayor Watts: I’ve made no bones about it. I have a daughter who’s graduating this year, and another daughter in grade 10. At this point in my life, I just could not fathom spending less time with my girls. I’m not prepared to sacrifice my family for politics. As well, when I look at the political environment, it is not conducive to doing the work that needs to get done. There have to be some fundamental changes. The general public has made their expectations known.

FV: Would it be fair to say that the timing’s not right, but running for Premier could be in your future?

Mayor Watts: I don’t know. I never close any doors. I will assess the situation as opportunities come forward – as I did this one. It all depends what’s going on in my life at the time – if it works, it works, and if it doesn’t, well, onward and upward.

Fresh Vancouver (FV): Congratulations on

being voted fourth best mayor in the world in the 2010 World Mayor Prize! What does this mean to you?

Mayor Watts: I think that accomplishments in any profession are not solely because of one person. I have a great team around me. We have a great council, we work very well together, and I have great support at City Hall. It’s a collective effort. For me, that recognition is really a recognition of the work that the whole team has achieved. It’s less about me and more about the key people that I work with.

FV: That’s very humble of you! Especially considering that you’re known as a unique political figure who is not only highly effective but also very well liked – which, in the realm of politics, is not always the case!

Mayor Watts: I think the biggest thing for me is that I don’t play politics – I absolutely refuse.

We’re elected to do the work for the people.

There’s an expectation from the general public that we do that work and that we implement good public policy. That’s our job. To get into the muck and mire of a political environment and focus your energy on personally attacking other people is just somewhere I will never go.

If that translates into the public arena, that’s probably why I’m not like many others.

FV: When you became the Mayor of Surrey in 2005, the city was ill-reputed and crime-ridden.

Now it’s a shining example of dynamic change, growth and progress. What key factors gave Surrey its polished new identity?

Mayor Watts: One of the reasons I ran for Mayor was because I didn’t believe there was a focused vision for the city. If you’re ever going to change the direction of a city, you need to have a vision. But you also need to back that up with good public policy, and make sure you’re implementing it. The community plays a huge

FV: What’s new for Surrey in 2011?

Mayor Watts: We’re continuing with the agenda we’ve laid out: building the metropolitan core, making sure that each of our town centres is really vibrant and conducive to supporting quality of life for our residents. Transportation is a key piece. We’re heading off to a trade mission in India that I think will prove very fruitful in terms of the business-to-business aspect and job creation. We’re really making sure that we have expanded businesses here locally so our kids don’t have to leave the city for jobs.

FV: Do you set professional new year’s resolutions as well as personal ones?

Mayor Watts: No and no! I do that evaluation on a daily basis – a self-evaluation and a look at the city from a 30,000 foot level. What do we need to focus on, where do we need to move, what do we need to implement? I want to make sure that I’m always keeping myself in check, and that I’m doing what I’m doing for the right reasons.

FV: What are your day-to-day diet and exercise programs?

Mayor Watts: When I’ve got time, I love to work out, but working it into my daily life is my challenge. My stress level dictates my exercise

Mayor Dianne Watts: The People’s Politician, cont’d and eating habits. When I’m really stressed, I tend not to follow a routine – the opposite of what you should do. I have a gym in my house and I also belong to Steve Nash, and I love yoga.

It’s difficult for me to go out to a gym because people always want to talk to me! When you’re in your sweat pants with your hair in a ponytail, you just want to get in and out. Of course, everybody means well!

FV: Are you a healthy eater?

Mayor Watts: Depends on my stress level! I’m an emotional eater, so if I’m really stressed, I tend to eat the wrong things, like carbs. I’ve just started a new regimen that I’m feeling really good about, just clean whole grains, proteins, vegetables and fruit. I’ve done the sporadic di-

ets where you have no carbs at all and you’re on a tight 900 calorie a day diet, and by the time you’ve lost the weight, you’re so deprived you just gain it all back again! It’s a challenge with my schedule the way it is, always going to events, because the healthy choices aren’t always there.

I think it’s really important how you portray yourself – it doesn’t matter what line of work you’re in. For me, nobody will ever see me with grey hair! I just don’t do grey hair!

Mayor Watts: Every morning and night I go through a regimen of cleaning and moisturizing. My favourite product is called Environ. It’s available at spas and dermatologists. I have sensitive skin and other products I’ve tried make my skin red. Environ has a retinol serum for anti-aging, plus the moisturizers. I also go for

Mayor Watts: I drink a tonne of water. I bet I drink a gallon a day. It just really hydrates you!

FV: You shoulder the responsibilities of your stressful job, your hectic schedule, and your family life with two teenage daughters. How do you find balance amidst the chaos?

Mayor Watts: I have a ladies’ group that meets once a month, and we usually go away a couple times a year. I have another group that just gets together to socialize whenever we can. For me, it’s about tapping into my personal relationships. Another thing that really relaxes me is crossword puzzles. I did four last night!

FV: Are you still a practicing Buddhist?

Mayor Watts: I was practicing years ago, but it’s more about the philosophy. The reverence of all human life, compassion for all of life, and to really allow the flow of life to guide you.

FV: You’ve mentioned that politics isn’t really your goal as a life career... so what is?

Mayor Watts: I think if someone had said to me years ago that I would be the Mayor of the City of Surrey, I would have rolled on the floor and laughed! Politics was the furthest thing from my mind. But life is going to take you where it takes you, and if you let that flow occur you can come to some wonderful places. In anything I do, I want to be good at it and make it meaningful and purposeful, but in a couple years I could be off in a completely different realm of life. Who knows?

Laser Hair Removal cont’d How Does it Work?

Laser and IPL systems use energy in the form of light to destroy the hair follicle. The treatment will begin with your technician choosing the correct settings according to your skin colour and coarseness of the hair. A cool sapphire crystal is then placed with pressure over a cold gel that’s applied on your skin; the technician will press a button or a foot pedal to flash a high intensity filtered light from the hand piece.

The energy from the light source is absorbed by the pigment, called melanin, which gives hair its colour. The hair rapidly absorbs this filtered light and transfers it to the surrounding cells, which in turn are converted into heat, raising them to a temperature of 70 degrees Centigrade or more. The heating denatures the cells, rendering them incapable of producing further hair growth. The heat kills the hair roots but the hairs remain in the skin and often become attached to the epidermis. They will fall out after one to three weeks as the epidermis renews itself. Some hairs will fall out at time of treatment as well.

Choosing the Right Clinic The most important thing to look for is a clinic that offers a complimentary consultation and patch test. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you have and allows your laser technician to educate you on the treatment and the process. The patch test is mandatory to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment. Be sure to look for a reputable establishment with many happy clients.

Biological Terrain Analysis: Mapping your Inner Health

D

etermining the best nutritional program can be a confusing and at times frustrating exercise. We try to eat the best diet we can and take the appropriate supplements, but how do we know if what we are doing is really working for us, taking into account our unique lifestyles and individual bodies? It seems to involve guesswork, intuition and even faith. Fortunately, there is an approach to the quest for health and inner balance that is accurate and specific to each individual.

This approach uses a scientific method to analyze samples of blood, urine and saliva to reveal a unique biological terrain for each individual. The method is called the “biological terrain analysis” or BTA, and it has revolutionized the way I practice naturopathic medicine.

Germ Theory vs. Biological Terrain Biological terrain was developed over a hundred years ago in France. At that time there was a fierce intellectual battle going on concerning the true cause of disease. Louis Pasteur argued that germs were the sole and only cause of human disease. Claude Bernard argued that both disease and germs emerged only after the internal milieu or chemistry of a person was out of balance. Unfortunately, Pasteur’s germ theory won out and has become the dominant paradigm in medicine. It is said that Pasteur recanted on his deathbed and admitted that Bernard was right, that “the microbe is nothing, terrain is all.”

Germs called viruses are being blamed for more and more diseases today, yet our ability to control them continues to evade us all the more.

It is now apparent that germ theory has its limits and that an approach focusing on internal chemical balance, such as biological terrain, is more useful for optimizing health and reversing disease.

Traditional farmers have a practical understanding of biological terrain. They know that to produce healthy plants and crops, you need to have healthy soil. Healthy soil consists of organic matter, minerals and adequate water. The soil is the plant’s biological terrain. A plant subjected to acid rain, air pollution and chemical fertilizers will become unhealthy and subject to diseases such as rot and insect infestation. Thus, it is actually the biological terrain of the plant that ultimately determines its health and not the plant’s germs.

We use the same concept of biological terrain to evaluate the health of a patient and how prone they are to disease. The pH or acid-alkaline balance, the redox potential or relative amount of free radicals, and the resistance or mineral content defines biological terrain in the human. The three body fluids we measure are blood, saliva and urine, and three readings are taken of these three body fluids for a total of nine measurements.

This constitutes a biological terrain analysis. This test is done in a doctor’s

office using a sophisticated laboratory device linked to a computer. The results are printed and analyzed within minutes of the test. We always perform the test on fasting subjects in the morning to get reliable and consistent results.

What Can Be Learned from BTA? The BTA provides a wealth of information about the state of the body’s cells, organs and biochemical balance, including: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Level of acidity of the cells and fluids of the body Blood alkalinity as a compensation for tissue acidity Tendency of the blood to thicken and become sticky Ability of the kidneys to excrete acids and other waste products Ability of the cells to produce energy Free radical activity in the body Mineral deficiencies or excesses in the body Digestive enzyme deficiency or inefficiency Sufficient anti-oxidants in the body Candida or dysbiosis Liver toxicity Lymphatic congestion Heavy metal toxicity Dehydration Immune system breakdown Tendency towards degenerative disease

pH and Acid-Alkaline Balance Acid-alkaline balance is extremely important for body functions. When pH is off-balance, enzymatic reactions in the body slow down and oxygen delivery to cells is impaired. Microorganisms like viruses, bacteria and yeast grow more easily when the pH of the blood is off balance. Cancer tends to grow more easily in an acidic, oxygen-deprived environment.

Excess acidity in the body is the prevailing imbalance in most people.

This is because most things people consume are highly acidifying to the body: coffee, alcohol, sugar, drugs, refined foods and meat all promote acidity. Alkaline foods are the healthiest and include fresh fruits, vegetables, juices, green foods and natural sweeteners. As well, stress, poor digestion, lack of exercise and aging all tend to produce excess acid buildup in the body.

Symptoms of excess acidity include fatigue, achy and stiff joints, heartburn, poor sleep, candida or yeast infections, excess mucus and a tendency to get frequent infections. The primary way to reduce excessive

acidity is to switch to an alkaline diet. The alkaline diet consists of eating at least 75 percent of your diet from foods that are alkaline-forming in the blood. This is a tricky concept for most people. Most alkaline foods are fruits and vegetables. Even acidic fruits like citrus are converted to alkaline after digestion in the body. Most grains, sugar, proteins, and refined foods are acidic and should be kept to only 25 percent of your diet.

The body will try to balance excess acid build up in the cells and tissues through the kidneys, if they are functioning properly. The blood will also buffer the excess acids by becoming more alkaline. Human blood is normally slightly alkaline at a pH of 7.3. I have seen people’s venous blood as high as 7.8, which means it is 50 times more alkaline than it should be.

When blood becomes very alkaline, it becomes very sludgy and sticky. The red blood cells have a tendency to stick together in rolls called rouleaux. This is commonly seen in the examination of live blood using an in-office microscope. When the cells stick like this, they cannot flow easily in the small capillaries and release oxygen to the cells. Chronically cold extremities can result, as well as generalized fatigue, from a lack of oxygen at the cellular level.

As well, blood that is this alkaline is able to sustain more viral, bacterial and mutated fungal growths. This is the beginning not only of a chronic infection, but also chronic disease. When medical researchers discover a microbe associated with a particular ailment they announce that they have discovered the cause of the disease. An example of this was the discovery of the H. pylori bacteria as the cause of stomach ulcers and chlamydia as the cause of arterial plaque. The true cause of these diseases is the acid terrain produced by an unhealthy diet, which then produces conditions favouring the growth of these bacteria. The recommended course of antibiotics will treat only the symptom of the disease and not the true cause. Unfortunately, they will also change the terrain to favour the growth of fungal organisms such as candida.

Fresh Bites with Joy Houston

W

e all recognize the need to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into our diets, and cut back on processed foods; the question is how. Chef Joy Houston, who specializes in raw cuisine, has some simple twists on favourite meals that normally involve highly processed foods. The three recipes below substitute processed cereal with apple granola; sloppy joe in a can with a vegan, raw alternative that is full of fibre-rich veggies; and a gluten-free “pasta” dinner that is ready faster than you can boil a stock pot of water.

Apple Granola:

Commercially available granola tends to be very high in both sugars and fats, unlike this easy-to-make raw cuisine version. Mix up the flavours, grains and nuts based on your preferences and top the granola with seasonal fruit.

Ingredients: ½ cup almonds (soaked 8 hours, rinsed) ¼ cup sunflower seed (soaked 8 hours, rinsed) ½ cup oat groats (soaked 8 hours, rinsed) ¼ cup dried coconut ¼ cup pitted, chopped dates 2 apples, cored and quartered Seeds from 1 vanilla pod or 1 teaspoon extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Dash of sea salt

Sloppy Joy:

A vegan, raw version of the messy, meaty sloppy joe, this recipe makes a quick meal with the savoury tang of barbecue sauce, but without all the chemical preservatives and saturated fats in the canned variety.

Place the almonds, sunflower seeds, groats and coconut in a mixing bowl.

Put dates, apples, cinnamon, vanilla and sea salt in the food processor.

Pulse until a paste is formed. Add the paste to the mixing bowl and toss well to coat. Divide the mixture over two dehydrator trays with Teflex sheets. Spread the mixture evenly and dehydrate at 115˚ until dry to the touch. Flip and dehydrate until crunchy. Mix in dried strawberries once the granola is dry. Store in an airtight glass container.

Ingredients: ½ cup almonds (soaked overnight, drained and rinsed) ½ cup walnuts (soaked overnight, drained and rinsed) 1 clove garlic 2 green onions (whites and greens) 2 small carrots 1 stalk celery BBQ sauce to taste Process garlic, carrot, celery, onions and nuts in a food processor until minced. Add 3 tablespoons BBQ sauce and process to combine. Season to taste with additional BBQ sauce and fresh cracked black pepper. This is fabulous served slightly warmed on Ezekiel toast or flax crackers, topped with tomato, avocado and lettuce.

Five Minute Zucchini Pasta:

It takes far longer to get a pot of water boiling for traditional pasta than it does to make this entire meal. This takes processed, gluten-filled pasta out of the meal and replaces it with zucchini, which is an excellent source of manganese, vitamin C and fibre.

Ingredients: 2-3 zucchini (spiral cut) 2 ripe tomatoes 1 cup sundried tomatoes ½ red pepper 10-15 fresh basil leaves ¾ to 1 teaspoon sea salt Fresh cracked black pepper ½ cup olive oil

Start by using a vegetable spiralizer to transform the zucchini into gluten-free pasta. Drizzle with olive oil and a dash of garlic powder; then toss to coat well. Set noodles aside.

Make marinara by putting all ingredients except olive oil in the Vita-Mix and blend. Once mixture is smooth, add olive oil through the top of the blender while the blades are turning. Blend well.

Top spiral cut zucchini with marinara and chopped fresh basil.

Serve.

e all face issues of time management at some point or another, but as more and more people deal with working at one or more jobs, fighting long commutes, managing a household, attending school or other training, raising children, responding to increasing work and time pressures of the workplace, tending to the needs of our life partners and dealing with aging parents, the days often seem to last long into the night. Just the thought of keeping fit and staying healthy seems difficult – let alone putting that thought into action.

Reading will also expand your vocabulary and motivate you in many ways. Audio books are very popular today; you can listen and learn while you drive, train, walk, run or cook. Keep a dictionary handy.

Spiritual Spirit is the life force, the breath and the soul.

It is what we see when we look into someone’s eyes. Lift your spirits this year. Do some homework. Look back and see what’s been missing in your life. What is your heart’s desire, your passion, your purpose? Be honest. Take that class or change your profession. Only you have the power to create your own happiness.

Social Friendships need to be nurtured. Make a quick call to say hello or a write a short email to let your friends know they’re in your thoughts.

Make a commitment on the calendar to get together as a group at least once a month to celebrate a special event or a have a pot-luck dinner. This will create lifelong bonds, provide a sense of belonging and increase your sense of personal fulfillment.

Mental Stimulate your mind and educate yourself.

Take a night course, or just pick up a book or magazine and read a paragraph, page or chapter every day. This daily habit can improve your knowledge, memory and general awareness.

What do Skin Tags Have to Do with Belly Fat?

f there is one thing that is the bane of a good figure and vibrant health, it is belly fat. I am talking about that stubborn extra roll around the middle that does not seem to disappear, no matter how swift your metabolism, how much you exercise or how many sit ups you do. For some people, belly weight means the dreaded “muffin top” that escapes over the top of your jeans. For others, abdominal weight gain results in a round apple shape.

The fat in those love handles contributes to increased blood triglyceride levels, inflammation and insulin resistance. Carrying extra weight around the middle puts you at higher risk of heart disease, cancers and diabetes.

So why do we gain belly weight? Why do men develop a beer belly and breasts while women suffer with rolls of belly fat they can’t budge? Our hormones are the short answer.

Throughout life, hormones regulate everything from bone strength to heart beat to how quickly food is utilized by the body. Insulin is the main hormone contributing to belly fat.

Insulin is produced by the pancreas to push glucose (sugar) into cells and thus decrease your blood levels of glucose. The more glucose in your blood from eating high-carbohydrate, high-sugar, low-protein foods, the more insulin the hard-working pancreas must produce.

Eventually, your cells can become resistant to insulin, resulting in excess insulin in the blood and elevated blood sugar that isn’t pushed into the cells.

Insulin resistance is a pre-diabetic condition. Skin tags are a common early sign of pre-diabetes due to elevated insulin and blood sugar. If elevated blood sugar is not controlled, it could ultimately result in type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome as well as elevated cholesterol and triglycerides.

Insulin-Testosterone Connection

In women, when insulin levels become high, it also causes an increase in male hormones circulating in the blood, particularly testosterone. When insulin and testosterone are elevated, women develop hormone-related conditions like acne, male-pattern facial hair growth (e.g., hair above the lip, on and under the chin), infertility, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). (Chirositol, a nutrient I discuss below, has been researched for the treatment of PCOS with excellent results, restoring fertility, reducing weight, and halting male facial hair growth and acne. Read on!)

In men, elevated insulin causes testosterone to convert to estrogens, which results in male breasts and beer belly. It also causes the conversion of testosterone to DHT, a harmful male hormone associated with prostate cancer and hair loss.

Normalizing Insulin and Blood Sugar

Normalizing insulin and blood sugar just got easier. A unique, well-researched ingredient derived from carob called D-chiro-inositol has been involved in more than 30 published

studies at Virginia Medical School over the past 25 years. Research on D-chiro-inositol, also called chirositol, (pronounced kur-au-sit-ol) has shown excellent results in the treatment of insulin-resistant conditions like type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and PCOS as well as weight loss, especially belly fat.

Chirositol has many actions that contribute to its well-documented effectiveness. First, it stimulates insulin activity, helping to regulate glucose levels and pushes glucose into the cells where it is supposed to be (not leaving it in the blood), which in turn helps to normalize blood sugar levels. At the same time, it will not cause low blood sugar in those with normal blood sugar levels. It acts like insulin in this action. Due to chirositol’s ability to improve the action of insulin, it reduces the high testosterone seen in women with elevated insulin and improves conditions such as excessive weight gain around the middle and irregular ovulation or menstruation.

It does not reduce testosterone levels in men but regulates insulin to maintain healthy testosterone levels.

Chirositol has been further shown to reduce appetite and improve serotonin, our happy hormone. Reduced serotonin or poor metabolism of serotonin is linked to increased sugar cravings.

So by restoring serotonin, chirositol also helps control appetite.

Stress and Belly Fat

When you are under constant stress, your adrenal glands pump out a hormone called cortisol to help you deal with the stressors you are facing.

Just as insulin resistance promotes weight gain, so does chronic stress because it triggers the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Elevated cortisol is associated with elevating insulin, blood sugar problems, fat accumulation, poor immunity, infertility and more. Cortisol also causes our fat cells to change structure and become resistant to fat loss. In short, cortisol makes our fat cell door slam shut and not let the fat out even when we reduce calories and increase exercise. For these reasons, it is imperative to reduce stressors and to support the adrenals too. Adrenal support nutrients like ashwagandha, rhodiola, suma, Siberian ginseng and schizandra berries work to normalize adrenal function.

Use chirositol daily, reduce stress, support your adrenals with the herbs mentioned above and eat a diet designed to keep insulin and blood sugar balanced. How to Achieve the Natural

‘No Makeup’ Look

f you are like the rest of us, your new year’s resolution most likely includes some form of an outing for physical exercise. Whether it be going out for a run or a yoga class, going to the gym or on a walk to the grocery store, you may also wonder, “Need I bother applying makeup for these occasions?” The answer is yes and no.

If you were blessed with flawless skin with no blemishes or dark circles, then moisturize and away you go! But if you are like the majority of us and need a little bit of help looking naturally impeccable, read on. No one needs to know you didn’t wake up looking this flawless!

How to Achieve the Natural ‘No Makeup’ Look cont’d...

Prepping The Skin

The natural look is all about the appearance of the skin. Properly prepping the face is the key for superb looking skin. That soft, dewy skin we all dream of having is achievable with a few basic steps.

Exfoliate: Start with exfoliating the skin.

Exfoliation helps promote the renewal of skin cells and slough away dry skin. There are many exfoliating creams and gels on the market, but I have to say, I prefer the good old fashioned face cloth most of the time. It works exceptionally, the cost is minimal, and it’s natural and chemical free. Nothing feels better on the face than a warm face cloth! Just gently rub and focus on the areas that tend to get dry, such as the nose, forehead and chin. I recommend exfoliating two to three times a week; more than that will start to strip away those precious natural oils our skin needs.

Cleanse: I recommend using a cream or milk (non-foaming) cleanser as it will not strip away these necessary oils like harsh foaming cleansers and soap tend to do. Cream cleansers do a wonderful job of cleaning the skin while keeping moisture intact. Most non-foaming cleansers can also be rubbed gently into the eye area to remove eye makeup without the irritation or stinging caused by soap.

Some of my favourite cleansers include shu uemura Cleansing Oil, Biotherm Biosource Softening Cleansing Milk and Avene Gentle Milk Cleanser.

Moisturize: For normal/combination skin to dry skin types, apply a hydrating moisturizer to the face. If your skin is very oily, apply an oil-free moisturizer. Be careful not to under-hydrate your skin. Very few people have truly oily skin, and this common misdiagnosis leads to under-hydration and less than perfect looking skin. Without proper hydration, your skin produces excess oil – and the result is the opposite of what you intended.

My favourite moisturizers are the anti-aging, super moisturizing formulas made by Clarins, Ren and Avene.

For a little extra smoothness and a subtle skin surface, apply a makeup primer. This is a perfect base for any makeup. The one I recommend: Cover FX Skin Prep Nourishing Foundation Primer and Anti-Aging Serum.

The “Makeup”

Once your skin is cleansed and nourished, it’s time for the quick final steps of the natural “no makeup” look. Apply a little concealer under the eyes and anywhere you may have redness or blotchiness, such as around the nostrils and chin, and on any blemishes. Blend well into your moisturized skin. My current favourite concealers are Dior Nude Concealer and MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. At this point, I like to also add a small amount of foundation all over the face for evenness, as without foundation, the concealer tends to be noticeable. If you are doing

an activity where you will be perspiring, this is a good occasion to use a powder foundation. I recommend Dior Forever Compact, and MAC Face and Body Foundation.

Next, apply a little cheek stain to the apples of the cheeks, which will not rub off during your workout and will give a youthful flush to the cheeks. Benefit Benetint is perfect for this.

I like to apply one light coat of mascara most of the time; you may omit this step if you desire a very natural look. Finally, a very important step for the look and for nourishment is lip balm.

Choose one with a little colour and gloss to it so your lips have a little hue and shine, and are moisturized at the same time. Hands down, one of the best for this is Clarins Moisturizing Lip Balm, which comes in three different lipcoloured shades.

eauty may be skin deep, but the reality of breast surgery is that it’s not only a step towards enhancing your appearance; it can also positively impact your self-confidence and even your physical health. Both breast enhancement and breast reduction surgeries are highly beneficial options for many women, and for many reasons.

Breast enhancement is one of the most common procedures requested by my patients, and has an exceptionally high satisfaction rate. A common desire among breast enhancement patients is they want to look as natural as possible. To help ensure you achieve the outcome you desire, there are many factors to consider.

Saline vs. Cohesive Gel Careful consideration must be given to the type of implant you choose as it determines the format for the rest of your surgery. Saline implants are a time honoured, safe option for enhancement. This type of implant can be inserted through a small incision under the breast, through the underarm, or through the border of the areola. Smaller incisions are possible because the implant shell is empty before insertion, and expanded with saline once inside the breast pocket.

Cohesive gel implants are popular for the natural look and feel they give to the breasts, especially in women without much natural soft tissue coverage. The Yin and Yang of Breast Surgery cont’d Size Isn’t Everything Many patients assume bigger is always better, yet that has not proven true for everyone. Consider your lifestyle when determining your desired size.

If you are quite physically active, having large breasts may interfere with your ability to perform certain activities, and may cause additional tension on your back, neck and shoulders. During the examination at your consultation, your breast width will be measured as your natural size is a limiting factor in determining the best implant size for your figure. Large implants will look rounder and less natural, and will droop more with time. If breast sagging is extensive, a breast lift (mastopexy) may be required to restore the breast’s natural position, as the main purpose of the implant is to provide volume.

Implant Surface Texture Implant surfaces may be smooth or textured. Smooth implants have a smooth outer shell and move freely in the breast pocket where they are inserted. Their disadvantage is their higher incidence of capsular contracture (hardening). Textured implants have a firmer feel than smooth implants and less risk of capsular contracture as scar tissue cannot easily form around them. They are also less likely to slide down or shift with time.

Implant Shape and Location The final appearance of the breasts is determined by a number of factors. A round implant is recommended if you desire more fullness in the upper portion of the breasts. A teardrop shaped implant has a gently sloping contour for a more natural appearance, and may provide more projection, but it is only available as a cohesive gel with a textured surface to help prevent rotation of the implant in the breast pocket. Ultimately, breast shape is determined by a number of variables: your breast laxity, implant slope and implant size. The bigger the implant and the tighter your skin, the rounder and less natural the result. Smaller implants will look more natural whether round or teardrop shaped.

Breast implants may be placed above or beneath the pectoralis muscle.

The majority of implants are placed beneath the muscle in order to reduce the risk of capsular contracture and lessen implant visibility. Placing the implant beneath the muscle also helps ensure ease of mammography.

Breast Reduction While many women dream of a larger bust, a substantial number of women who have naturally large breasts would like them reduced in size.

The weight from having overly large breasts can cause physical pain and

tension on the back, neck and shoulders, and can interfere with physical activities. I

was at a friend’s house for supper recently when their teenage boy decided to embarrass his parents. He said, “I wish my parents would keep it down when they’re having sex.” To which I replied, “Don’t you think they deserve some fun too?” Mortified, he and his red-faced parents pretended not to hear.

Apparently the heating ducts in the house connected to all four bedrooms. According to the mom, a loud whisper could be heard if the house was quiet. Later on, the mother confided that, ever since the revelation, she and her husband were too paranoid to have sex.

On the long list of things that help parents be asexual, getting caught in the sex act is certainly a concern for many. But should parents give up their sexuality just because they feel it will have negative implications for their children? Absolutely not.

Sigmund Freud is the culprit for creating this fallacy. Freud theorized that children who witnessed the “primal scene” (i.e., seeing parents making love) would become neurotic because of their unfulfilled desire to marry the opposite-sex parent. It is interesting that Freud’s theory stuck, considering the majority of the world has historically lived in oneroom dwellings. Privacy for parents is a relatively new phenomenon.

Even knowing this, I recognize how uncomfortable getting caught or

having sex while the kids are still awake can be. However, you and your partner need to be clear if this unspoken expectation is causing marital distress due to zero reconnection time.

Sex and Parenting Valerie Davis Raskin, M.D., author of Great Sex for Moms: Ten Steps to Nurturing Passion While Raising Kids, wrote: “It is absurd to try to provide our children with a perfect environment. Ironically, while we zealously ‘protect’ our children from seeing their parents as sexual beings, we relinquish our only opportunity to teach them our family’s values about sexuality. We miss the opportunity to teach our children that love and physical intimacy go together, and this important message is too often exactly opposite what they see in the media.”

In her book, Dr. Raskin postulates that it is not only healthy, but also necessary for parents to be affectionate, touchy and yes, a bit sexual in front of their children. Does that mean you should have sex in front of your children? Of course not. Dr. Raskin believes that discretion and a regard for appropriate sexual boundaries are important.

How much affection to show is up to you and your partner. For example, when I was a child my friend’s mother allowed her husband to openly

touch her breasts in front of the children. That simply would not happen in my home. Where I was fascinated, my friend found it commonplace.

Sexuality in Your Home Where should you and your partner draw the boundaries of sexual intimacy in the context of your children? Of course, communication and planning are your best friends. First, discuss any unspoken expectations you may have around not being sexual because of the children. Next, talk about any guilt associated with presenting yourself as a happy, healthy sexual couple to your child. Finally, discuss what your sexual privacy and sexual boundaries will be and, more important, how you will stick to them when wanting to cave overrides good sense.

After communicating, go immediately to the hardware store and buy a set of good locks for your bedroom door – your mantra to and from the store should be “boundaries, boundaries.” If you are worried about being too noisy, buy something to create white-noise, like a loud humidifier, fan, radio or stereo that can be moved close to the door.

What to Do if You Get Caught Discuss what you will do in the worst-case scenario: your child walks in

on you making love. A younger child is unlikely to understand what is happening and may simply be frightened by the sounds of lovemaking.

Address your child’s fear. Matter-of-factly reassure him or her that no one was hurt and this way of touching is something grown-ups do. A primary school-aged child may simply be curious. Say only what is necessary to move to the next subject without shaming or inadvertently stirring up even more interest. Say, “I can see you are inquisitive. Sometimes adults do things kids don’t understand.” Then switch the topic.

An older child may know exactly what is happening and may be disgusted or embarrassed. If an older child bursts in, do not lie or get defensive about what is going on. Instead get dressed and talk about what just happened, acknowledging that the situation is awkward for everyone.

Then, set your boundaries with the child to ensure your privacy. However you work it out, make sure the fear of getting caught is not stopping you from keeping connected to your partner.

How to Avoid Running Injuries

he benefits of running are obvious and are the focus of many a health forum, magazine article, and just plain general consensus, so I will skip past this point and assume you are either already an active runner or are acquiring information on how to get involved. This article will focus on the one thing that goes hand in hand with the enjoyment and pleasure of running: the need to avoid injuries.

Because if it hurts to run, you are not going to enjoy it.

Beginning a New Running Program When beginning a new running program, progress at a pace that is comfortable to you. Remember that fitness levels and training intensity vary according to the individual, and try to find something closest to your capabilities and lifestyle. New runners shouldn’t set out to win marathons on their first day of running!

Allow yourself time to recover. Just like any form of strength or endurance training, your body needs time to repair and rebuild between sessions. No time is more important for rest and recovery than your initial foray into running. Many people begin a new running program all gung ho and excited, only to cause themselves pain, discomfort, or injury, forcing them to stop or drop out completely. When starting out it is best to adopt a one day running, one day rest approach to allow your body to build up to your personal training goals.

Try to foster a fitness tripod to ensure a complete healthy lifestyle, with running simply one leg of the tripod. Include a stretching regimen to go with your exercise, both a warm up and a cool down. For the third leg of the tripod, try to include another form of physical activity on your days off from running. Be active to be fit! After a day of sitting on the couch it probably will not be the most entertaining notion to go running the next day, especially when you are starting out and are feeling a little sore from your previous endeavour. It does not have to be anything particularly ambitious; anything that gets you out of the house and keeps you moving will do fine. Try window shopping for 20 minutes at a leisurely pace, any kind of drop-in sport like bowling or mini golf, or a relaxing night of yoga.

Avoiding Injury With all the orthopaedic shoes and shoe liners on the market, it should be a sin to end up with repetitive stress injuries to the feet due to running. Good running shoes are a must, and while we may not all need the top-of-the-line running shoe, you might as well invest in the kind of quality shoe designed to protect your feet. This is especially true once you have made it past the ‘honeymoon period’ with running and begin to settle into it as a lifestyle choice. A nicely designed sport shoe will help to prevent injuries and any good quality, sturdy running shoe will do.

Listen to your body. By running within your capabilities you will not only enjoy running more, you will also receive more from it. It is best to run smoothly and easily until you are reasonably fatigued; then stop. To accomplish this, it is usually easiest to run by time and not by distance.

To minimize jarring, never run on an uneven surface, and try to run in a relaxed and comfortable manner. The strain on your joints, legs and lower back is tremendous when tough terrain and a tense body complicate your running. If you feel unnecessary tension or uncomfortable pain in any part of your body, slow to a more comfortable pace.

Do not try to run through an injury. If you experience pain while running it is best to choose an alternative to keep you going while your body recovers. Swimming or cycling use different muscles and joints and are very good ways to keep active and fit while you recuperate from any form of running discomfort.

Stretch it Out! There are many different forms of basic stretching exercises, so feel free to try whatever applies best to you. Generally, there are five simple stretches that are keys to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and preventing sports-related injuries.

Quadriceps Stretch: Standing straight balanced on one leg by a stationary object, reach back and grab the foot and ankle of the bent leg to stretch the quadriceps of each leg. Try to avoid bending forward.

Hamstring Stretch: Lying flat on your back, grab each leg by the back of the thigh one at a time and straighten to 90 degrees in the air then slowly straighten your knee.

Piriformis Stretch: Lying on your back, cross your legs as if you were seated, then grab the bottom leg with both hands and pull toward your chest until you feel the stretch in your hips and butt.

Gastroc Stretch: This is the common runner stretch where you see runners push against a wall with their back legs at a 90 degree angle. If done correctly, you will feel a slow pull in the back calf of your back leg. As with all stretching, holding a long, slow stretch is more effective than

quick, bouncy stretches.

Soleus Stretch: Similar to the Gastroc stretch, the Soleus stretch starts with a straight back, hands pressed to the wall in front of the person, one leg leading and one leg back, but not at a 90 degree angle. The butt should be lowered to an almost sitting position with legs bent, then push forward until you feel a comfortable pull in the lower calf muscle.

This simple guideline can be fitted into your schedule as you like, as long as you maintain a one day on, one day off ratio. Walking, jogging or running can be substituted according to your fitness level.

Any form of healthy lifestyle is about conditioning and routine, so if you need a period of walking before jogging and jogging before running, always remember it’s a matter of building up your stamina safely and effectively over time. If you have been inactive for a long time, you may wish to start out walking, then mix in jogging gradually until you are comfortable pushing yourself.

You will come across many programs and trends, but when it comes to designing a running routine, but bear in mind that less is more when it comes to progress. Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the father of aerobics, believes that running three miles a day, three times a week will give most men and women adequate aerobic fitness.

For some of you, this may seem not enough; for others, it may be a distant goal, but prevention of repetitive injury is critical to achieving and maintaining it. If you start right, there is no reason why this sport cannot be enjoyed for many years, increasing your health, wellness, and longevity with the many benefits of aerobic exercise.
