ver feel the need to reinvent yourself? Or maybe you’re in the mood for a little refresher... After all, life serves us lumps (and age spots), and we all deserve a little TLC from time to time! In November, Fresh Vancouver is sponsoring a “fab fall makeover” for moms at The Shops at Morgan Crossing. Nominate your mother or, if you are a mother, get your kids to sign you up! Nobody works harder than a mom, and every mom deserves a little “me” time! Also check out the new VISIA machine at the Casbah Day Spa. The machine is an advanced “complexion analysis system” that uses multi-spectral imaging to analyze and assess the issues that affect us all as we age, like photodamage, enlarged pores and wrinkles. This allows for targeted treatment and prevention strategies going forward. You may also want to consider a “Las Vegas Peel” from the Beautiful Canadian Laser and Skincare Clinic – a rejuvenating laser peel that is the equivalent of having 30 microdermabrasion treatments at once! And there’s a new product that you need to be aware of, ladies! Skin needling has become all the rage in anti-aging skincare, and now you can take the process home with you with the new SKN Spin Dermal Roller (SKNSpin.com). It exfoliates while creating tiny micro-channels that significantly increase topical nutrient absorption down into the dermal layer where collagen and elastin reside. It also creates micro-injury, which leads to the release of epidermal growth factor, or EGF, which boosts cell renewal and repair. Now that your skin is taken care of, perhaps it’s time for a wardrobe makeover! Our fashion experts have the latest tips to help you look great for the fall season. But it’s not all about skincare, makeup and clothing... While our outward appearance helps us feel better about ourselves and present a confident image to the world, we need to take care of the inside, too. Check out Heather White’s advice on how to embrace your inner child and take some time to simply “play.” Very few have reinvented themselves as successfully as Leslie Diamond, this issue’s cover story. Escaping from a difficult childhood into marriage at 19 led to another attempt to escape the confines of marriage and the “regime” of the dynastic Diamond family; yet Leslie managed not only to persevere, but to create a happy, successful life for herself and her husband Gordon. Together, they have donated millions of dollars to various Vancouver organizations and are a reminder of our duty to give back as much and as often as we are able.

he changing leaves, the chill in the air, the shorter days... the signs of fall are everywhere. Once I get over lamenting the end of summer and getting the kids back to school, I really love this time of year, but I have to admit that it’s in large part because fall is my favourite season for fashion. How can you go wrong with knee-length skirts, great tights, killer boots and statement-making scarves? Flattering for any age and any body type, this is always my go-to look in a pinch. But don’t take my word for it: in this issue, Christine Visnjak of Muse Social Fashion House gives us the in-the-know info on the hottest colours and styles for this season. Plus, did you get too much sun over the course of the summer? The fact is, your sun damage from this summer and many summers previous may show up much further down the road in the form of brown spots and wrinkles. Skincare specialist Katelyn Rousselle explains how to identify what lurks beneath your skin’s surface, and how you can reverse and prevent sun damage to protect your skin as you age. For some, however, sun damage is the least of their cosmetic concerns. Women who are burn or cancer survivors often have scarring, skin sensitivities, missing hair or surgical side-effects that they deal with in their everyday lives. Women who have received mastectomies, for example, may live with a radically altered connection to their personal beauty and sense of self. That’s why makeup and paramedical tattoo artist LeiLani Kopp started her “Face the Future” program to provide corrective makeup guidance and cosmetic tattooing to women who can’t find help elsewhere. The best part? She does it for free. And she’s recently teamed up with Tab Bra creator Yvonne Hogenes to provide a range of beauty, mastectomy and wellness services. See their story on page 12. This month’s cover story is another inspirational woman who has had a real impact in our fair city. Leslie Diamond and her husband, Gordon, are among the city’s most generous philanthropists. Leslie reminds us of the importance of giving, whether a little or a lot, whether time or money. In her frank, funny and warm-hearted manner, Leslie discusses life, love and philanthropy, as well as the horrendous struggles of her Jewish ancestors and the lessons we all must take to heart today and into the future.

Anti-Aging through the Ages:
Cosmetic Acupuncture By Amanda Beisel
T
he anti-aging industry is constantly churning out the latest and greatest treatments to help us regain and preserve our youth. Let’s stop for a moment and think back to the days before technology and advanced skincare… What did the empresses of ancient China use to maintain their youthful appearance and vitality?
The Secrets of Cosmetic Acupuncture
Cosmetic acupuncture combines the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine with specialized facial acupuncture to help you look and feel healthy and beautiful. It is the truest form of anti-aging medicine because it works internally to optimize your health while simultaneously enhancing the appearance of your skin. A practitioner specializing in cosmetic acupuncture uses the “meridians” that either end or begin in the face to stimulate and balance your energy, while also treating the underlying factors that contribute to the aging process. The results leave your face glowing, with tighter skin and a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Cosmetic acupuncture is also used to reduce or eliminate puffy eyes, dark circles, dehydrated skin, acne, and rosacea. As an added benefit, cosmetic acupuncture can also increase your own natural energy, or “Chi” force, providing you with a complete sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. You can also expect such positive side effects as reduced stress, improved sleep and digestion, and a reduction in menopause symptoms.
Going ‘Under the Needle ’
The treatment is customized to each client based on an initial health assessment to determine your internal health. Your practitioner then creates a treatment plan using acupuncture and, if needed, Chinese herbal medicine. You will also be given nutritional recommendations. It is important to remember that your face is a measure of your health; if you are healthy and balanced, this will be reflected in your skin. During treatment, the insertion of tiny, painless needles stimulates the flow of blood, lymph, and oxygen, which nourishes the skin from the inside out. At the same time, a process called “positive micro-trauma” stimulates the production of collagen, creating even skin tone, a smooth complexion and a natural, healthy glow. Cosmetic acupuncture is both preventative and corrective, so you can begin at any age. Beginning these treatments in your late twenties or early thirties can literally slow down the aging process by boosting your collagen and improving the health of your skin and body. If you are in your forties, fifties or sixties, these treatments will turn back the hands of time by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in tighter and brighter skin. Be prepared to glow!
8
The Results are In…
While you can expect a brighter complexion after just one cosmetic acupuncture treatment, ten to twelve treatments are recommended for optimal results. The treatments should be performed twice a week, or no more than one week apart for the first series of treatments. To maintain the results, it is recommended that you have a treatment every six weeks to keep you looking fresh. Your cosmetic acupuncturist will also educate you on proper skincare using natural but active cosmeceuticals. It is equally important that you feed your skin the same vitamins, minerals, and supplements that you give your internal body. After all, the skin is the largest organ – and the only visible organ – so it needs proper care! Unlike a treatment such as Botox injections, cosmetic acupuncture addresses the entire face. The aim of cosmetic acupuncture is not to eliminate lines and wrinkles immediately, but rather to increase the health of the skin, while tightening and brightening the complexion. Cosmetic acupuncture is a great option for those who are hesitant to undergo Botox injections, but also a great option for those who have targeted Botox treatments and want to boost the vitality of the rest of the face. Clients have reported a need for less Botox injections due to the overall tightening of the skin. Cosmetic acupuncture continues to gain in popularity, and there is evidence that it works. A study published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture showed that of 300 people who received facial acupuncture, 90 percent saw marked results after their first course of treatment. One of the most attractive features of cosmetic acupuncture is that there is no downtime; plus, it is covered by most extended health plans. If you are looking to naturally boost the look and health of both your skin and body, than cosmetic acupuncture may be an excellent option for you. But don’t let just anyone touch your face! Do your research as not all practitioners are alike.

hen was the last time you played? I don’t mean a game of tennis or golf – I mean played without intention, without a goal or an end result. As adults with what can feel like endless responsibility, it’s easy to be serious about everything, all the time. We could learn a thing or two from the average five-year-old. Ever had a little tyke pulling at your leg, begging you to come and play? Did you pull the classic response of “just a minute” or “not right now, maybe later”? Consider what a five-year-old means when they want to play. For them, it’s not about what you do; it’s a state of being they’re after. It’s the adrenaline rush of running tirelessly, the endorphin boost of mindless laughter, the joy in reckless abandon and the beauty of the moment. We hear a lot about meditation these days, and yoga has become an increasingly popular
activity as we yearn for an escape from stress, anxiety, and worry. These are valuable experiences that will indeed offer you relief, allow you to get grounded, connect with the present moment and sink into the beauty in life. But I’d like to suggest that some good old-fashioned “let loose and have fun” time will do wonders for your psyche as well. If you’re anything like me, this foreign concept might not come easily, so here are a few tips to max out on having fun: Dive in. Literally. Whatever the first idea, inclination or inspiration that pops into your mind when you decide to “go play,” just do it. Playing is a manifestation of your spirit; it’s beyond your mind. The second you let thought into it, you’ll talk yourself right out of playtime and right back into some other responsible task that needs attending to. Don’t set timelines, make rules or have expectations. Playing is about the moment and once you dive in to it, trust that you’ll play as long as you’re meant to. Don’t worry: your voicemail, blackberry and deadlines aren’t going anywhere. Use props. If you’re having trouble letting loose, watch a funny movie, head out to your local playground, attend a comedy show or read a humorous book. Before you know it, you’ll be laughing out loud and enjoying all that comes with some good old-fashioned fun.

Having fun, being silly and simply laughing out loud will instantly raise your spirit. You’ll tap into the reservoir of your abundant energy source and feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm. Tasks that at one time seemed overwhelming and worries that were consuming you won’t go away, but they will indeed appear different. You’ll see solutions and next steps where you once saw roadblocks and challenges. Your time playing is never wasted. You’ll tackle responsibilities much more easily and effortlessly, and things that you thought would take an hour will be accomplished in a few minutes. Life is a beautiful miracle that we have the honour of experiencing. Yes, there are bills to pay and work to be done, but don’t miss out on the simple pleasures that are here for us to enjoy. You don’t need a fancy car or a big house to take a time-out from the day-to-day grind, let loose, have some mindless fun and simply play.

The Face of Good Health: Beauty After Illness and Trauma By Liberty Craig
Two local women help cancer and burn survivors reclaim their sense of self – at no charge.
A
pproximately 15 years ago, film and television makeup artist LeiLani Kopp decided to make a difference. It all started after she’d begun volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society as a wig stylist for cancer patients, and discovered a demand for makeup. Most off-the-shelf makeup is not good for the skin sensitivities often associated with cancer treatments, so LeiLani decided to launch her own line of anti-inflammatory, calming makeup using mineral extracts (the Sweet LeiLani line is now available in retail outlets across BC). It turned out that this kind of makeup was vital for burn survivors, too. As time went by, LeiLani saw more and more demand from women who simply couldn’t find any help elsewhere. And so she did something about it. LeiLani started a program called “Face the Future.” A purely volunteer effort, LeiLani styled wigs and taught cancer patients how to wear them in a natural way so they could look and feel normal, healthy, and good. She taught chemo patients how to draw on eyebrows, and offered free eyebrow tattooing. She tattooed natural looking lips onto burn patients. She
taught women how to use corrective makeup. She even treated severe acne. One of the few people in the country to specialize in paramedical tattooing, LeiLani provides skin needling for burn scars to reduce scarring and improve mobility. She often then tattoos flesh tones over the scars to make the scarring literally blend into the surrounding skin and disappear. She tattoos hair colour over thinning or traumatized hair lines. She provides scar flattening and colour correction for mastectomy patients, and a great deal of her work with Face the Future now involves incredibly life-like areola and 3-D nipple tattooing for both full mastectomy and mastectomy with breast replacement recipients. In a hospital setting, there is typically a two-year wait list for a tattoo nipple that is literally “stamped” onto the breast and looks nothing like the real thing. About a year ago, LeiLani joined forces with Yvonne Hogenes, mastermind of the Tab Bra line, which caters to women from all walks of life and includes mastectomy bras. For years, Yvonne had listened to women agonize over their bra troubles while she helped them into outfits at her Surrey clothing store, Malary’s, so
12
| fresh VancouVer Issue 9
she created a bra that is highly customizable, ultra supportive, and can accommodate a mastectomy insert that looks completely natural. Her bras even have a health element as they aid lymphatic drainage, which can be of particular importance to cancer patients. Both LeiLani and Yvonne had heard time and time again from desperate women: “There’s nothing out there for me.” Together, LeiLani and Yvonne have made it their mission to help women feel beautiful – women who could not get service for their issues in the past. “By integrating beauty, health and fashion,” says Yvonne, “you have no idea how many people you touch, and how many people come out of hiding.” Both women provide their services at no charge. They hold group events, they see many clients privately each week, they consult and they advise. And they do it because time and time again, women have said to LeiLani and Yvonne: “You have changed my life.” Husbands have said: “You have given me my wife back.” “They hug you and kiss you,” says Yvonne. “What could be better?” And as LeiLani states: “It’s more than makeup; it’s therapy. We
couldn’t charge these people.” It’s taken many years of knocking down doors, but Face the Future has made some impressive inroads. Male doctors used to scoff at the concept of helping women heal through beauty and physical appearance. Female doctors, particularly surgeons, helped the program gain credibility. Face the Future spreads the word through plastic surgeons, burn units and support groups; most recently LeiLani spoke at a national nurse’s convention. Their dream is to run a small boutique within a cancer agency in the Lower Mainland. Eventually they’d like to offer a full range of wigs and bras for purchase, with customization of both at no charge, as well as makeup and paramedical tattooing. “Everyone knows someone affected by cancer,” says LeiLani. “We can provide that extra care, love and servicing that these women need.”
Call for your free Face the Future consultation or fun group event! LeiLani can be reached at The Cosmedic Corner at 778-896-4891 or www.sweetleilani.com. Contact Yvonne at 604-838-6402 or info@malarys.com, or visit www.tabbra.com.

From Blueprint to Building: Dr. Kelvin Mah
An Architect’s Smile Story
W
hen patients, friends, colleagues and peers ask me what I love the most about being a modern dentist, the answer that I give them tends to create some initial confusion because it goes: what I love the most is that I also get to be an educator, an artisan and an architect! A little confused? Please allow me to explain. Yes, my training, experience and expertise are in dentistry. When I’m asked to fill in the occupation box on forms, I always put “dentist.” But, in reality, my job gives me the wonderful opportunity to be so much more for my valued patients. I am an educator who explains the options and benefits of modern dentistry. I am an artisan who creates harmony between personality and style. Finally, I am an architect who designs and builds smile solutions that are functional, durable and aesthetically attractive – especially when it comes to the allimportant “first impression.” So in light of these other hats that I wear every day – and especially the architect one – it’s not surprising that the moment Alex walked into Smile City Square Dental, I knew that it was the start of a unique success story. You see, while I integrate architectural concepts, themes and ideas into my work, Alex goes a few gigantic steps further: he is an architect (and not an ordinary one, either). In just a few short years, Alex has built a renowned reputation for excellence, a distinction that has earned him an increasingly prestigious roster of international clients. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news was that, despite his professional success, Alex was worried that his overall presentation skills were not keeping pace. He felt that something was holding him back, undermining his confidence, making him self-conscious, and worst of all, threatening to limit his career potential at the precise moment when it was poised to soar beyond his wildest expectations. That restrictive something, as you’ve likely guessed, was his smile. And that’s what brought Alex to my practice.
before
Examining the Teeth and the Man
The first thing I noticed was that Alex’s front teeth had become extremely worn down because of a bad bite and grinding habit. In addition, while his front teeth had been repaired many times, his fillings had become stained, and the shape and proportion of his teeth were never properly addressed. As a result, Alex’s overall smile was compromised and certainly didn’t reflect his outgoing, professional personality. I spent a considerable amount of time getting to know Alex as a person. I learned about Alex as a husband, as a father to an adorable baby girl, as a former Calvin Klein® model, as a soccer coach and, of course, as a renowned architect with limitless career potential. I also learned how he felt about his appearance on an aesthetic and emotional level. How he longed for a dazzling white smile that would be powerful and memorable, yet natural and subtle – a smile that would perfectly match the confidence and candor that he so prominently expressed through his brilliant work. Once I had a clear sense of Alex as both a patient and a person, I began studying models of his smile, and worked closely with him to determine the exact shape and colour that he was looking for. With an architect’s commitment (or perhaps obsession) to detail, I ensured that every factor was addressed so that Alex’s new smile would meet very specific design parameters, while remaining natural and subtle.
Architecting Perfection
Ultimately, we agreed that Alex would benefit from veneers and some minor gum contouring via state-of-the-art laser technology. Indeed, some dentists overlook gum position in the overall treatment plan and consequently, the final result can be compromised – just as a beautiful painting can be diminished by an unaesthetic frame. Working collaboratively with Alex and getting his input every step of the way, I also addressed his bite
after

before
problem so that it would be more functional, healthy and able to support him into the future. When the finishing touches were complete, Alex looked at his new smile for the first time and instantly recognized it as the one that he had always known was within him, but had never had a chance to come alive. Just as I imagine the deep pride that Alex feels after he meticulously transforms a blueprint into a building, I was tremendously satisfied with the results. But more than that, I also felt an immense sense of gratitude for the opportunity to help Alex find and share his true smile – the one that was always inside him, just waiting to be “built.” Indeed, call me a dentist, an educator, an artisan, an architect, or all of the above. The reality is that I have a special job that allows me to play a role in the lasting happiness and success of my patients. To me, that makes this the best job I can imagine, and one that I wouldn’t trade for any other – not even to be a world famous Calvin Klein® model. (Well, now that I think about it…)

“As an architect, I’m not just selling an idea or a concept to my clients. In a way, I’m selling myself and what I stand for as a professional, which includes a meticulous attention to detail, confidence, competence and high energy. “I knew that the imperfections in my smile were holding me back and preventing me from making the best possible impression. But, for a long time, I didn’t try to solve the problem because I thought it would take too long, or require major treatment. Was I ever wrong! “The rapid results that I experienced thanks to Dr. Mah have surpassed my wildest expectations. Without question, I now feel more confident, I am smiling more and my attitude is more positive. My bite has also improved, which is something that I was sure I’d need braces for, but somehow, Dr. Mah made it happen! “Are people noticing my new smile? Absolutely! But not in the ‘wow, you must have had work done’ way. Dr. Mah’s work was so natural and sublime; people simply say that there’s something more positive and radiant about me. While I guess my little secret is out, it’s a small price to pay for sharing just how amazed and impressed I am with Dr. Mah and his skilled craftsmanship. “Before this, I never thought of a dentist as an architect. But Dr. Mah truly has an architect’s heart, mind and vision – and thanks to him, I have the smile that I’ve always wanted to boost my self-esteem and, no doubt, my career as well. Thank you Dr. Mah!”

Every time I wear eyeliner on my bottom lid, it seems to come off within a few hours. How can I have longer lasting eyeliner and what brands do you recommend? - Raman S, Vancouver
Eyeliners are oil- and wax-based. They will melt from body heat and wear off when combined with natural oils from our skin. Applying eyeliner that lasts is a three step process: 1. The skin should be primed and powdered prior to applying the eyeliner to ensure it will last longer. Pat the primer with your fingertips in a thin layer to the top and lower eyelids, and set with loose power. Makeup Forever and Smashbox Cosmetics both carry great lines of primer. 2. Our favourite black eyeliner pencil is ‘Feline’ by MAC (Stila waterproof pencils are also very good). Dip the pencil tip into MAC Fluidline eyeliner (we recommend the colour ‘Carbon’). Apply the liner to the upper and lower waterline of your eyes. Use a cotton swab to wipe any excess liner off your lashes. 3. Once the eyeliner is applied, adding a dark shadow pigment with an angled, flat eye shadow brush gives the liner greater staying power and prevents the eyeliner from smudging by ‘setting’ it. Our favourite black eye shadow for this job is ‘Typographic’ eye shadow by MAC.

Since giving birth, I have diminished feeling at the opening of my vagina and less sensation with intercourse. I don’t like the sense of feeling “open.” What can I expect from a vaginal rejuvenation? - Serena K, Burnaby
Childbirth of a normal weight baby stretches vaginal and pelvic tissues dramatically. Even with physiotherapy and time, many women are distressed by the looseness of the lower vagina that persists in spite of their best efforts. Vaginal tightening surgery (often called vaginoplasty or vaginal rejuvenation) is performed to restore the vagina and surrounding tissues to the way they were before being pregnant. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is important for a woman’s self-esteem and sexual function. Sexual feeling for a woman and her partner may be reduced by vaginal looseness. Tightening surgery helps by increasing the friction during intercourse. hinning eyebrows are a condition medically termed superciliary madarosis, derived from the Greek word madaros for “bald. Loss of eyebrow hair can be distressing due to the cosmetic importance of eyebrows, and is a relatively common concern. Determining the cause of thinning eyebrows is integral to treatment as it can be a symptom of an underlying hormonal imbalance, nutrient deficiency, allergy, autoimmune disorder or a response to medications. Thinning may appear on one eyebrow or both, in patches or uniformly.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism may include the loss or thinning of the lateral third of the eyebrows, known as Queen Anne’s sign or the sign of Hertoghe. Other symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, low mood, difficulty losing weight, dry skin, and feeling intolerant to cold. Screening for hypothyroidism includes symptom consideration and a blood test for TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) levels. Naturopathic treatment includes nutritional and supplemental advice to support thyroid hormone production and often bio-identical hormone replacement. Nutrients that support thyroid hormone production include iodine, tyrosine, zinc and selenium, which are gained from a diet rich in seaweed, protein, nuts and seeds.
Nutrient Deficiency
Deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamins A, E, D, iron, B vitamins and L-lysine may cause thinning eyebrows as well as thinning and weak hair. Fatsoluble vitamins A, E, and D all help to stimulate and support healthy hair growth and are found in spinach, carrots, bell peppers, kale, sunflower seeds, almonds, fish and eggs. Iron deficiency is diagnosed by measuring blood levels of ferritin and may be accompanied by frequent infections, brittle or spoon-shaped nails and decreased exercise

ability. Sources of iron include meats, legumes, beans and whole grains. B vitamins are essential for metabolic functions in the body, and help the body cope with stress that can lead to hair loss. B vitamins are found in whole grains, leafy green vegetables, and legumes. L-lysine is an essential amino acid that appears to slow hair loss. Food sources include legumes, meat, fish, eggs, cheese and nuts. Therapeutic supplementation with the above vitamins requires consultation with a naturopathic doctor due to the potential for toxicity.
Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis, commonly referred to as eczema, can be found anywhere on the body, including on the skin underneath the eyebrows. It involves red, itchy patches that can become inflamed and lead to thinning hair over the patches. Eczema can be due to topical irritants or, more commonly, food sensitivities. Diagnosing food sensitivities and avoiding these foods often helps eliminate eczema. Temporary relief can be found through topical creams containing chickweed and marshmallow root.
occurs two to three weeks after starting the treatments and re-grows weeks or months after completion of treatment. Chemotherapy drugs that cause hair loss include adriamycin, carboplatin, cyclophosphamide, etoposide, ifosfamide, taxol and vincristene. Because the hair re-grows after the treatment is complete, it is usually not necessary to provide separate treatment for the hair loss.
Aging
Advancing age causes hair to thin in general. For women, aging means a drop in hormones like estrogen and an increased susceptibility to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) found in hair follicles, which shortens the hair growth cycle, resulting in thinner hair. Nutritional support to decrease inflammation and support healthy estrogen metabolism in the body supports normal hair cycles. Calcium-D-glucarate, sulforaphane (broccoli extract) and indole-3-carbinol are the main nutrients required for estrogen metabolism. Determining the underlying cause of thinning eyebrows helps to target the treatment. Consult with your health provider to determine the best treatment approach for you.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the body mistakenly attacks its own hair follicles, causing patchy or extensive hair loss that can include eyebrow hair, but most commonly presents as scalp hair loss. Naturopathic treatments include acupuncture, topical treatments with essential oils of thyme, lavender and rosemary, and nutritional support including B vitamins, and vitamin D.
Chemotherapy
Many drugs used in chemotherapy cause hair loss on the head, face and body, which usually

The Colour of fall Christine on colour: “A colour trend for this season is the rich yellow-orange undertones such as amber, ochre and cognac. These warm shades will illuminate your face for an instant glow. If you’re not bold enough to try a head-to-toe look in this colour palette, try implementing these colours into your wardrobe through accessories such as scarves, gloves or a bags.”

“We love giving advice and suggestions on how to pair items together. We know that customers are being more conscious of how they are spending their money, so we purchase items for the store that are often quite versatile, easily worn from season to season, and we like to educate people on how to do that. Building a trusting relationship with our clients is something we value.”
Christine loves: Co-Lab bags, the younger, more eco-friendly line from high-end designer Christopher Kon. Co-Lab bags are 100 percent vegan friendly and are extremely soft to the touch. “The colours these bags are available in are very rich,” says Christine. “I am personally loving any bag in a cognac colour. t’s that time again: you’ve booked in for your tri-monthly spa facial. You’re not sure exactly what your therapist is doing, but you know three things for sure–one: you get to relax; two: your skin will feel great at the end of it; and three: whatever they’re doing is good for your skin… right? The truth is, while you are relaxing, your skin therapist is preparing to give you much more than just a fluffy spa treatment. Skin therapists spend their career devoted to improving the health of your skin. They are continually receiving advanced training on new products and the latest ingredients and technologies to give you the best skin treatment possible. In the past, it was enough to make your skin feel good and ensure a little rest and relaxation, but nowadays, another “R” is becoming just as important: Results. One of the most noteworthy advancements in skin treatments is the ability to see beneath the surface of the skin for a truly customizable treatment with the use of facial analysis equipment such as the VISIA Advanced Complexion Analysis System. This dermal imaging machine allows skin therapists the ability to see not just the surface, but also the subsurface of your skin to determine the best course of treatment in your facial. One distinct advantage of utilizing VISIA as a part of your facial treatment is that the therapists’ ability to see the client’s skin beneath the surface allows them to ensure that the facial treatment they are going to perform is not just addressing current and apparent skin concerns, but also the ones that are not yet visible. This is important, as many conditions that appear in the skin are a result of previous neglect, such as brown spots that appear in our forties because of
unprotected sun exposure in our twenties. The VISIA Advanced Complexion Analysis System uses multi-spectral imaging (including UV photography) to record, analyze and provide an assessment on a variety of skin features such as UV spots, photo-damage, pore size, wrinkles, bacteria, broken capillaries and much more. It scores your results in comparison to others in your age, gender and skin type groups, and produces a customized visual report that includes recommendations for future treatments and the most appropriate skincare to use at home. For today’s skin therapist, a facial is so much more than just a fluffy spa experience. With all the technology and advanced education now available, clients don’t need to rely solely on a medical appointment to achieve a result. With advanced facial techniques and the implementation of technology such as the VISIA Advanced Complexion Analysis System, therapists can help to identify and treat skin conditions such as acne, sun damage, wrinkles, dehydration and redness, giving you the ultimate spa experience of relaxation and results. Available as part of the Casbah Day Spa’s “Casbah Signature Facial,” the VISIA system is fast becoming a key anti-aging and beauty strategy for women of all ages and skin types, often allowing us to address critical skin issues before they are even visible. The Visia Complexion Analysis Session (regularly priced at $150+ a session at dermatologists and laser clinics) is a complimentary inclusion in the Casbah Signature Facial, only $109. harming, honest and enormously philanthropic, Leslie Diamond reminds us of the necessity of giving and the ability in all of us to do so. As part of the dynastic Diamond family, Leslie and her husband Gordon are among Vancouver’s most generous benefactors. In her wide-open, storytelling manner, Leslie articulates the need to give back – to community, family and self. In very much her own words, Leslie’s candid conversation with Fresh Vancouver covers a wide variety of subjects...

“My life before I got married was very different. My father died when I was just over one year old and my mother was left with me. She was absolutely exquisite, 21 years of age, and a widow. She left me to be raised by my grandmother in Calgary – who was my mentor, my icon – and went off to find herself, which in 1941 was a difficult thing to do. My mother was a women’s liberator before her time, a feminist, as my grandmother was. My mother married a wonderful man in California and sent for me. I was yanked from my grandmother’s home and put into something totally foreign. I was raised in Los Angeles until the age of 18, but every summer I went back to my grandmother’s, which to me was going home.”

But as you can imagine – you’ve never lived with anybody, and all of a sudden you’re with someone 24/7 after just dating. It was quite a shock. Getting married and following rules when I‘d never had any. I think becoming a Diamond was the most difficult thing I’d ever done in my life. I’d gotten married a free soul with very few restrictions. I felt as if I married into a regime.”

“My father-in-law certainly was an icon. I adored him and I think he adored me. He used to call me “the wrestler” – I don’t really know why; it was a term of endearment. He came to this country from Poland before his family was wiped out by Hitler. He came with 17 cents in his pocket, not speaking any English, and made an amazing life for himself and family. With no university education, he became chancellor of Simon Fraser University. He became head of the British Empire Games and the father of horse racing in Canada. Every honour has been bestowed upon him. He started working peddling potatoes, then as a butcher, sweeping the floors. Finally, he bought his own meat packing plant. It’s an incredible story.”

“My grandmother was quite aware of the antiSemitism that was percolating in Europe. She had left behind brothers and sisters and cousins; in those days, everybody lived in a “ghetto” in Poland. She took a job as a chambermaid and saved enough money to buy a rooming house. She then saved enough money to bring her family one at a time from Poland, promising them work in the rooming house on the condition that with the money they earned, they would send for another family member. She did this until the Holocaust, and then of course there was nobody else to bring – they were all killed. The Switzer family now has almost 2,000 descendants and they’re all due to my grandmother. She left me with the knowledge that you have to do something in the way of charity.”

“When Gordon and I were first married, we did not have the funds to be so generous, but at no time did I ever not write a cheque for $25, $50, $100 dollars out of my own pocket. Giving back to a people or a country that has been good to you is just something you have to do. I don’t care if you do it with money or with ‘volunteer employment,’ as I call it. The Diamond Foundation’s main criterion is to support our community, which is the Jewish community and the province we live in. It is the Jewish obligation to perform charity, to give back to your community: it’s called tzedakah, which means justice, fairness and giving back. If you don’t have a dollar to give, then give of your time, which is priceless.”

They were asking for a tremendous amount of money, and we finally reached the decision between the two of us that yes, we would be thrilled to give the money if we were able to allocate funds. I had always wanted to set up a women’s health centre, so I had two million dollars set aside from our donation as The Leslie Diamond Fund for Women’s Health. Part of that two million dollars went towards setting up a clinic for women suffering from vulvodynia, which very few know anything about, and the other part went to the Leslie Diamond Women’s Heart Health Clinic.”

BC Women’s Hospital has always been very important to me, and I’ve always felt it was the poorer sister of BC Children’s Hospital. We need to make sure that they’re getting the funding they need – and they’re not. Maybe because it’s women, I’m not sure. If we don’t help other women, who will? It’s women helping women all over the world that makes the difference.”

“I had breast cancer very young, at age 38. I was a mother of three. So many times women in their thirties don’t think it can happen to them. I had a mastectomy, because that’s what they did in those days. I also had a subcutaneous mastectomy on the healthy breast for fear of recurrence. I didn’t want to be an amputee so I had a reconstruction. I’m now 70 and cancer free. Today having breast cancer is not a death sentence. Catch it early and the survival rate is excellent. In celebration of my 70th birthday, Gordon gave a gift of a donation for the new Leslie Diamond Chair in Cancer Survivorship at Simon Fraser University.”

“I saw a film called Philadelphia, a story about a man who got AIDS. At the time, I had friends who were also dying of AIDS. I came out of the movie so shocked. I went home and started leafing through the yellow pages looking for something I could do – I had to do something. But there was nothing there! Then the phone rang that same night and it was my friend, wanting to take me to an event, which turned out to be a project called the Library of Hope for those suffering from AIDS. I couldn’t believe it. I met some guys who had a little apartment they’d set up, a centre called Friends For Life, a drop-in for people who had AIDS and life-threatening illness. I volunteered my time. I wanted to remain anonymous so I used my first name only. One day, a group of the executive were talking about finding a new place for the centre. The Weeks house in the downtown west end was available from the city for a dollar a year, but it required about $200,000 dollars in renovations, which they did not have. So I interrupted and said: Hello! You don’t know who I am. And they said yes we do, you’re Leslie. And I said, no, you don’t know who I am. I can make this happen for you. I contacted my friend Robert Ledingham, who was president of the Interior Designers Institute of BC, and he said that the night before they’d had a board meeting and decided they wanted to do something more community-minded. I guess it was meant to be. Along with Lorne Mayencourt and the entire decorating community, we transformed the Weeks house into Vancouver Friends for Life Society’s Diamond Centre for Living. I am very proud of that accomplishment.”

So I made a promise to myself: on my 60th birthday I was resigning from everything. Everything! I went to Palm Springs... but I just hated doing nothing. I read something in Oprah that said you have to find your
passion. So I went to my hide-out at Whistler, and for two days I wrote my passions on sticky notes... all over the fridge, the walls, the logs... sticky notes! At the end of this process, my passion turned out to be cooking. I love to create, follow recipes, entertain, be challenged. So I decided to teach cooking.”

“As far as plastic surgery goes, I’m a firm believer in doing what we can to make us better – but not to change. I think women who go for cosmetic surgery hoping to look younger are in for a rude awakening. I’ve seen many women who are over-Botoxed, over-stimulated, over-fixed, and they’re a mess. For me, I swear by a little Botox in the middle of my eyebrows, and I’ll use a little of the filler when I feel it’s bothering me. Plastic surgery is always an option. Just make sure you are in the hands of a competent doctor. I’ve always had a very full face, which helps me avoid lines. I’ve never been thin, and you know what? The more voluptuous or Rubenesque you are as you age, in my opinion, the better you look.”

“I think the most important thing for a woman is to feel sexy. Never get too complacent. Intimacy in a relationship is primary to happiness. When a couple has a healthy sex life, they can overcome a lot of trials and tribulations. In 51 years of marriage, one thing that I think has kept Gordon and me together is the fact that we have a wonderful relationship – in bed! That’s being blunt! I’m 70 years old, and I have heels that I can only walk from the bathroom to the bed in. And Gordon has always bought me beautiful lingerie. The most wonderful thing about growing old is ‘God’s gift’ of poor eyesight!”
sun daMaGe! Goodbye,
By Katelyn Rousselle

all has arrived; yet our skin will be affected by the UV exposure of summer long after the warm, sunny days are over. Now is the time to peel away the sun damage we have accumulated, and give back the essential nutrition the skin deserves. After all, a sun-tanned face is the skin’s indicator that it has experienced damage and is in need of repair. Casual exposure to the sun has moderate benefits, including the production of vitamin D by the body, but overexposure to ultraviolet radiation has detrimental health effects for your body and skin. These effects can include increased risk of skin cancer, depressed immune system function, damaged DNA, accelerated aging of the skin and irreparable skin damage over time. In the beginning, as skin cells are negatively impacted by UV rays, the damage may not yet be visible to the naked eye because it is happening at a deeper level. This is the time when preventing damage from surfacing is essential. If not addressed early on, sun damage will become fine lines, wrinkles, unhealthy texture, a dull complexion and hyperpigmentation. Below are recommended treatments to help remove, repair and remodel your skin from both the visible signs of sun damage and those that are lurking beneath the surface. It can take years for damage to become visible, so beginning a sun repair and protection program is essential.
peeLs
A chemical peel is a technique that involves the removal of the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. Peels are extremely beneficial for skin that has been damaged by sun exposure. Removing the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process results in marked improvements in the formation of skin tone and complexion. Advancements in chemical peels now include the blending of active natural ingredients with a variety of enzymes and acids that allow peels to be customized to specific skin needs and concerns. These treatments can truly transform the look and health of the skin. Peels are customized based on the level of sun damage. It is
important to find an experienced practitioner to perform chemical peels, someone who has a thorough understanding of how different chemicals and enzymes work on the skin.
viTaMin a infusion
The Vitamin A Infusion Peel is a one-of-a-kind peel that repairs and remodels your skin. The Vitamin A Infusion delivers potent calming, antibacterial, lightening, and dermal remodelling ingredients that restore the look and health of the skin. Unlike chemical peels that work from the outside layer in, the Vitamin A Infusion Peel works from the deepest layer out. The deep layer, the dermis, is where collagen and elastin reside, making it a powerful antiaging treatment. It is highly recommended for skin that has been exposed to UV damage, as it boosts cell turnover rate and results in a healthier, more radiant complexion. Here’s what you can expect from a Vitamin A Infusion Peel: • Increased fibroblast activity (fibroblast cells are what create collagen and elastin) • Increased capillary flow to help increase food supply to the dermis and thicken the dermis • Lifted hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage • Reduced fine lines and improved skin tone and elasticity • Normalized oil production • A series of five treatments is typically recommended. With each treatment, the infusion is left on longer, giving the skin more absorption of vitamin A.
MediCaL skin needLinG
The latest skin treatment available is called “skin needling.” It’s a form of collagen induction therapy intended to improve the overall health of the skin and thereby reduce UV damage. It reduces the appearance of acne scarring and pigmentation. It is one the newest, easiest and most effective skin treatments available. Skin needling is a non-invasive, non-injectable treatment that targets a diverse range of skin concerns. The needles penetrate the upper lay-

ers of skin, creating tiny dermal injuries. This triggers the body’s natural wound healing response within the skin, producing new collagen and elastin and releasing growth factors in the treatment area. Each consecutive treatment triggers the production and deposition of new collagen and elastin that progressively depresses scars and fine lines. Skin becomes firmer and smoother and looks and feels healthier. The most exciting feature of skin needling is its safety advantages. Skin needling can be performed safely and effectively on all skin types and colours. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (a result of skin trauma) as the melanocytes remain intact, like the epidermis, during skin needling. There is very minimal downtime or discomfort, and an almost immediate outcome.
hoMe Care skin needLinG
Home care skin needling is a great addition to your daily skincare routine. Home care skin needling with a high-quality tool like the SKN Spin Dermal Roller (SKNSpin.com) offers many benefits. It acts as an exfoliator, removing the dead, drab layer while also preventing congestion that leads to breakouts. It creates hundreds of tiny micro-channels in the skin that significantly increase the absorption of topical nutrients through the epidermis to the dermis, where the cells that create collagen and elastin reside. When applying vitamin A (retinaldehyde), vitamin C, antioxidants, and DNA and stem cell serums, the results are dramatically enhanced. One of the most exciting benefits is that this micro-injury leads to the release of epidermal growth factor, or EGF. The production of natural EGF significantly slows when ultraviolet (UV) light is present, hindering the body’s ability to repair itself. EGF is necessary for age-prevention and age reversal because it supports cell renewal and wound repair. By combining home care skin needling with a revolutionary product from Osmosis called Stem Factor, you can create immense change in your skin. Stem Factor contains many growth factors that begin to decline as early as age 25. This is one of the most powerful
home care anti-aging programs in existence. The stem cells used in Stem Factor have been derived from human stem cells, making them much more effective than plant-based and synthetic stem cells. When we are young, we have ample amounts of growth factors in our skin, and that is what keeps our skin looking smooth, healthy and youthful. With age, however, and as early as 25, these growth factors begin to decline, and over time the results are fine lines, wrinkles, poor skin function and skin conditions.
hoMe Care supporT
There are some simple yet very important concepts that should be understood before purchasing home care products. Your skin is made up of cells, and these cells are constantly undergoing attacks from the environment and are in need of daily support. Having a skincare routine at home with the necessary vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants will not only support the skin, but will also repair the damage related to sun exposure. There is significant research showing that most skincare products have a penetration rate of two percent – which means 98 percent of all ingredients are wasted. The solution is choosing a product line that has a delivery system such as liposomal technology, and using the SKN Spin dermal roller. Aside from a delivery system, you want safe, natural, active ingredients that the skin recognizes. Osmosis Pur Medical Skincare is the leader in natural cosmeceuticals and is proven to create profound change for all skin types and concerns. It is extremely important to consider what ingredients are being used in your skincare line. The following are key ingredients to look for: • Vitamin A Serum: If there is no vitamin A in your treatment serum, then the ability of the product to remodel the skin is extremely limited. You want the vitamin A to be in the form of retinaldehyde. This is the strongest form of vitamin A, but does not cause irritation and peeling like other retinoids. Plus, unlike retin A, the skin can store retinaldehyde. Vitamin A promotes healthy cell turnover while working on thickening the dermis and regulation of oil. Your vitamin A serum should be worn nightly, as sun can degrade the vitamin A.

• Antioxidants: With sun-related trauma comes the loss of our protective antioxidants. Most people think the only way to protect the skin from sun damage is by using an SPF. While SPF is extremely important, antioxidants are just as vital. To maintain focus on repairing and remodelling the skin, it is essential we are using antioxidants on a daily basis. A primary factor in cell aging is damage to the DNA caused by free radicals. Free radicals are the primary cause of unwanted pigment. Antioxidants work to reduce the damage caused by free radicals and allow the skin to rebuild itself, resulting in healthier skin. Some potent antioxidants to look for are superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and vitamin C.

Going Green:
hyBRId CaRs aRe BeTTeR Than eveR By Liberty Craig
rob Williams
H
ybrid cars used to seem the stuff of science fiction, but in recent years they’ve become not only more common, they’ve also become more efficient, more powerful, and a whole lot sexier, too. Hybrid expert Amy Li from OpenRoad Lexus Richmond spoke to us about just how far the advancements in the world of hybrids have come. A Lexus hybrid, being a Lexus, is a high-quality, great-looking car, yet it is also up to 70 percent cleaner than a gasoline engine and up to three times cleaner than a diesel engine. It can also cut your gasoline usage by as much as half. Whether you’re concerned about the environment or the price of gas, these numbers are significant. Nowadays, says Amy, a very wide range of people are interested in switching to hybrid vehicles. In the brand-new Richmond location, which features Canada’s only hybrid showroom, Amy and her OpenRoad colleagues see families, young professionals and mature clients; people looking to be more environmental in keeping with their healthy lifestyles, or perhaps purchasing a second car for getting around town with lower emissions. Interested in potentially making the switch? There are four advantages, according to Amy, that customers will want to consider when deciding whether to go hybrid: 1. Low emissions: A hybrid vehicle has far lower emissions than a regular car. This is especially true in the case of “stop and go” city traffic, when idling cars produce the highest amount of toxic emissions. A full hybrid runs on an electric motor that simply shuts off when the car has come to a complete stop – meaning
32
no more harmful idling. 2. High fuel efficiency: Greater fuel efficiency means greater savings at the pump, of course, but it also means we can slow the depletion of natural resources. 3. Quietness of electric motor: What’s peaceful when you’re commuting? Well, when you’re commuting in a Lexus hybrid, you can’t even hear your engine. When you push the “start” button to turn the car on, listen closely – you’ll hear nothing. 4. Great performance: You no longer have to sacrifice performance to go green. Hybrid cars now come in all different shapes and sizes. For example, Lexus offers the very popular CT 200h at 134 horsepower for optimal fuel economy; but also the RX450h at 295 horsepower and the GS at 340 horsepower to combine performance and fuel efficiency, plus the LS at 438 horsepower for those who lean toward performance. If you’re in the market for a new hybrid, be sure you understand the technology before you buy. A “full” hybrid is a car that runs on an electric motor until a sophisticated computer indicates that the gasoline engine is also required, which occurs at higher speeds when more power is needed. A “mild” hybrid uses the electric motor and the gasoline engine at the same time – which means less fuel efficiency. (All Lexus hybrids are full hybrids.) Comfort, style, performance and environmentalism... all in one car? It used to be the stuff of science fiction, but now it seems hybrid cars have fully arrived, and are here to stay.

kdon by Kim Cathers

V
ancouver’s Kim Cathers made a splash as the fourth runner-up on season two of Global TV’s Project Runway Canada. Since her return to her hometown of Vancouver, Kim has continued to grow and promote her kdon clothing line, bringing fashion-forward street wear to boutique shops in Vancouver and Montreal. Cathers also keeps herself busy creating custom handmade and hand-draped dresses for clients’ special occasions. Check out kdon at www.kimcathers.com or in store at Main Street’s Twigg and Hottie and Gastown’s Gentille Alloutte.
How would you describe the kdon line?
Fashion forward, deconstructed but tailored, avant garde street wear. It’s about style, not fashion. My clothes don’t go in and out of trend; the pieces are more timeless.
What’s coming next from kdon?
Right now, I’m producing my fall line called Suture. I’m going to be launching a men’s line in spring, and for women, I’ll be bringing back all our favourite kdon pieces for spring.
Describe the kdon clientele... It’s people who care about quality and aesthetic – clothes that fit well and are well made. People who have an eye for art, who want something unique and hand-detailed. People with creative jobs, who choose to live that way in their whole life. It has nothing to do with age: my clients range from age 22 to 78. They’re all super amazing stylish people who want to look cool!
What was most interesting about your experience as a contestant on Project Runway Canada?
It was interesting to be in a room with 13 other designers, to see how they went through the creative process. I picked up on some techniques for sure.
Where would you like to see kdon five to 10 years from now?
I’d like to see the men’s line take off. In five years, I hope both collections look the way I want them to and make money, and I hope I continue living an awesome life! I don’t want to have specific idea – I want to work hard, pay attention to the details, be honest. Not mess with karma. End up in an amazing space.
What is today’s most common fashion crime?

Putting really tight items on heavier areas of the body to try to make them look smaller. It doesn’t work – it just squishes the lumps into all the wrong places! I design for different body types. Not every person can wear every item in my clothing line, but everything is built for layering, depending on your comfort level and body type, and all my pieces are intended to work together.
Belt Lipectomy By Dr Kimit Rai
B
elt lipectomy, otherwise known as a “body lift, is a body contouring procedure that is performed on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight. After weight loss, there is usually a laxity of the skin that involves sagging and looseness of the lower abdominal area and the upper arms. These patients need a tummy tuck to tighten the abdominal wall, and truncal or torso lipectomy to tighten the back. Typically, a post-weight-loss patient’s skin is loose in a circumferential manner: around the abdomen, posterior hips and back. The belt lipectomy procedure is one in which the abdomen and back are trimmed together. It involves a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and removal of the excess tissue on the torso. Most patients who have had significant weight loss (from 70 to 100 pounds) present with looseness of the arms, abdomen, back and thighs, and droopiness of the buttock area. They can also have back rolls, excess hip area and deflated-looking buttocks, with droopiness of the buttocks and fullness on the back. They need excisional surgery involving the arms, back, abdomen and thighs. Belt lipectomy can be performed on the lower or upper part of the abdomen. The patient must be healthy to have this surgery, and it is possible to have more than one procedure done at the same time. Overweight or obese patients need to lose weight prior to considering a belt lipectomy
procedure. If they are unable to lose weight through diet and exercise, gastric banding can be considered. Patients could lose from 30 to 150 pounds and be reassessed to recommend the appropriate kinds of surgery for body contouring. Lipectomy procedures are usually done under general anaesthetic and involve a longer hospital stay with follow-up appointments to manage any post-operative complications if they arise. Belt lipectomy is a large, involved procedure that has great benefits for motivated patients. The procedure benefits bariatric patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and wish to have a more contoured body and a better functional outcome. Motivated patients who have lost anywhere from 30 to 150 pounds are good candidates for belt lipectomies to improve not only their appearance, but also their health status. These patients require significant preoperative assessment, operative care and postoperative follow-up. With careful management, postoperative complications can be minimized. He is also the past president of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Northwest Society of Plastic Surgeons. www.cosmeticsurgery-bc.com or 604-522-2925.

Ayurvedic Corner
Ancient Wisdom for a Happy, Healthy Life By Sam Hari
W
elcome to the Ayurvedic corner, where we will be providing useful tips for wellness based on the ancient wisdom that is Ayurveda. Ayurveda is an ancient system of healing that dates back thousands of years. Literally translated from Sanskrit, it is known as “the knowledge of life.” The first records of Ayurveda show up in the Indian Vedas, commonly known as one of the oldest pieces of literature in the world, said to date back more than 5,000 years. One of the unique aspects of Ayurveda is that it looks at a person on much more than a physical level. It incorporates the mind, body and soul. As all three are linked to one another, all must be considered when looking at a person’s state of well-being. It is believed that we all have three Doshas (elemental based energies), which reside in our bodies in varying degrees. When a person is in a healthy state, these Doshas are balanced in a harmony that our body is naturally in tune with. The five elements we speak of in accordance to the principles of Ayurveda are Akash (Ether/Space), Vayu (wind), Tejas (Fire), Jal (water) and Prithvi (earth). The entire universe is comprised of these elements in varying degrees.
The Three Doshas •
Vata: Predominantly air and ether based, Vata is the energy of movement. Similar to wind in nature, it is constantly in motion. In the body it manifests as movement, transportation and action. It is also known as the king of the Doshas, as the other two Doshas tend to follow Vata’s lead.
•
Pitta: Predominately fire and water based, Pitta is the energy of conversion. In nature, Pitta is most comparable to the energy of the sun. Manifested in the physical body, it governs metabolism, conversion and transformation.
•
Kapha: Predominately water and earth based, Kapha is the energy of building or cohesion. It’s very important as it builds muscles and tissues and lubricates our joints, allowing for mobility. In nature it is most similar to water as it nourishes life.
An Individual Approach to Health
Depending on an individual’s natural healthy state of being, Ayurveda looks at each person differently and as a result ailments are treated differently rather than using a blanket approach. Many things affect our state of
well-being: diet, lifestyle, sleep, the company we keep, as well as the routine of our daily lives. Knowing how these things affect us is paramount in understanding and preventing disease. Ayurveda places great emphasis on preventative measures that will enable one to maintain and improve health. Of course, Ayurveda defines health a little differently than what most of us are accustomed to. According to the principles of Ayurveda, Swastha (a healthy person) is defined as a person who: • • • • • • •
has maintained their Prakriti (body’s natural state of being), has their three Doshas functioning properly, has proper Agni (digestive power), has proper functioning of Dhatus (tissues in accordance to the principles of Ayurveda), eliminates wastes and toxins accumulated in the body properly and in a timely manner, has sharp senses of touch, taste, smell and vision, and has a clear, calm, stable and peaceful state of mind.
Of course we also live in a society and as a result it is important to surround ourselves with good people. One unhappy person can sometimes affect a whole group. Since happiness is a key element of overall health, it is very important to establish and maintain healthy and happy connections with the people in our lives. Don’t worry if you don’t have all of these things going on in your life at the moment. Ayurveda gives us many tips and routines to achieve the balance in life that is perfect health. It allows us to connect with nature and our surroundings and gives us great insight into ourselves both physically and mentally. Over the following weeks we will share with you many health tips that you can use to balance your Doshas and improve your health and well-being. Looking forward to sharing many Ayurvedic tips with you soon!
Sam Hari is an Ayurvedic practitioner at West Coast Ayurveda. They specialize in Ayurvedic consultations, along with diet and lifestyle recommendations to help maintain a happy and healthy life. Assistance using traditional Ayurvedic methods to manage many ailments is also available. sTrenGTh and fLexibiLiTy:
The Foundations of Physical Fitness By Rob Williams
T
here are a lot of clichés in the world of fitness. One most often heard is: “You’ve only got one body, so you’d better look after it.” I’d like to suggest that few statements are so true, and so important. Throughout my own lifetime, I’ve put my body through a lot. Sporting activities like soccer and football, plus an active career where I spend long, physical days on my feet have put a lot of stress through my muscles and joints. Although I do experience aches and pains, I feel fortunate to be physically healthy and well enough to stay ahead of my two active boys. I attribute much of this to the fact that I’ve looked after my body by maintaining my functional strength and flexibility.
Get Fit for a Rainy Day
I know there are many people who don’t regularly participate in a fitness program. They live their lives keeping up with their daily activities as necessary, often staying healthy and pain-free – at least for the first few decades. The way I look at it, this is kind of like going through life without putting any money aside in the bank. While you’re young and working hard, you might not notice whether or not you have any savings tucked away, but as you get older and your ability to earn a living is compromised, those savings could really come in handy. When it comes to physical fitness, even if you don’t exercise regularly, your body will probably function just fine until you’re in your thirties. You’ll have enough strength, and be active enough to keep everything moving and loose. Unfortunately, this is when many people become less active due to lifestyle obligations like family and work. At the same time, their metabolism begins to drop, so they don’t have as much energy. Here’s where your fitness really begins to matter. If you’ve kept your muscles strong with regular resistance training, they should do an excellent job of moving your body while protecting your joints. This can reduce the chances of acute injuries or developing serious conditions like osteoarthritis, where joints become inflamed and painful due to excessive wear and tear. Well-conditioned muscles are also more metabolically active, which means they consume more energy and produce more fuel. This helps to maintain an elevated metabolism and reduces the likelihood of gaining excess body fat.
Stretch for Best Results
In addition to strength training, regularly stretching your muscles will help to keep them balanced and flexible, which will take stress off your joints and enable more efficient movement. Appropriate stretching will also facilitate better body posture, which improves appearance and optimizes the function of the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory and neurological systems. This provides positive health benefits that are too numerous to list. Fortunately, strength and flexibility aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s possible to have both. For example, pound for pound, gymnasts are some of the strongest athletes around, yet they are also among the most flexible. This doesn’t happen by chance. It takes diligent training to build muscle and maintain strength, and regular stretching to keep muscles lengthened and supple. Be sure to do both. If you stretch without strengthening, you won’t have a lot of muscle mass, and if you lift without stretching, you’re not going to be very flexible. At my training studio, I always recommend that clients perform strength training and flexibility work together. Every resistance training session should begin with a warm-up and dynamic stretching of the muscles that you’re about to train. This lengthens and loosens the muscle tissue, increases blood flow, excites the nervous system and lubricates the joints in preparation for the demands of the workout. Between exercises, when your body is warm and loose, I encourage additional stretching and range of motion work. At the end of each workout, stretch the muscles you’ve just trained as part of your cool-down to remove waste products and reduce post-workout soreness. Take this time to stretch other muscles in your body that you know are tight. Remember, with regular strength training and frequent stretching, you can build a body you’ll be proud of today, and enjoy for many years to come. Rob Williams is a practicing kinesiologist, Medical Exercise Specialist and posture expert, who has performed over 20,000 hours of private client instruction in the last 20 years. WHAT IS THE
ALExAnDER TECHnIQUE? By Richard Brennan
?
? ?
T
he Alexander Technique is not so much something you learn as something you unlearn. It is a method of releasing unwanted muscular tension throughout your body that has accumulated over many years of stressful living. This excess tension often starts in childhood and, if left unchecked, can give rise in later life to common ailments such as arthritis, neck and back pain, migraines, hypertension, sciatica, insomnia and even depression. Vast amounts of money are being spent on the treatment of these illnesses (to say nothing of the pain and discomfort that is endured by the sufferers), yet the number of patients continues to increase. With the right education, however, many people could be helped to understand the causes of their problems and be taught to help themselves, so that their aches and pains may be either relieved or avoided altogether.
A TECHnIQUE FOR TEnSIOn
The Alexander Technique can help us become aware of balance, posture and co-ordination while performing everyday actions. This brings into consciousness tensions throughout our bodies that have previously gone unnoticed, and it is these tensions that are very often the root cause of many common ailments. That is exactly what Frederick Matthias Alexander, the originator of the technique, discovered when trying to get to the bottom of his own voicerelated problem. When applying the Alexander Technique, you will learn how to release unnecessary muscle tension. As most of this tension has built up very gradually over a number of years, you are unlikely to be aware that it is even there at all. You will also learn new ways of moving while carrying out everyday actions that cause far less strain on the body, and discover ways of sitting,
?
standing and walking that put less strain on the bones, joints and muscles, thus making your body work more efficiently. In fact, many people who practice the technique experience a general feeling of lightness throughout their bodies and even describe the sensation as being like “walking on air.” Since our physical state directly affects both our mental and emotional well-being, people often say that they feel much calmer and happier even after just a few Alexander lessons. This often results in less domestic tension and a greater ability to cope with life in general.
THE POSTURE OF ALExAnDER
The Alexander Technique also involves examining posture, breathing, balance and coordination. As children, our posture and ease of movement are a joy to watch, but as we start to tense our muscles in reaction to life’s many worries and concerns, our posture deteriorates into what can border on deformity. Yet this is not the case with people outside Western civilization. Many of the indigenous races who still live on the land, such as Native Americans, the Berber people from North Africa and the Aborigines in Australia retain their natural posture throughout their lives. Their upright posture is considered to be a reflection of their human dignity and integrity. We have a series of reflexes throughout the body that support us and naturally co-ordinate our movements, yet we interfere with these natural reflexes to such an extent that many of us often hold four of five times more tension in our bodies than is really necessary. In fact, we often make life much harder for ourselves that it really needs to be, although of course we are completely unaware that this is the case. Our shoulders become permanently hunched, our necks become stiffer and stiffer, and we sit ei-

ther slumped or holding ourselves in a very rigid fashion as our minds become more and more concerned with the future and the past and our awareness of the present moment diminishes. Over the years, we become accustomed to the ways in which we sit and stand without realizing that if is often these very positions that are putting strains upon our bodies – no matter how uncoordinated these positions are, they will always feel right to us. When we perform everyday activities, it is amazing how frequently we subject our bodies to undue tension simply by not being aware of what we are doing; this tension spreads throughout the muscular system, even if it is triggered in one particular area of the body. It may be many years before we start to suffer from aches and pains or restriction of movement. Many of our modern methods of combating such problems involve powerful painkilling drugs that block out the body’s warning systems, whose function is to tell us that something is wrong. Often, doctors can offer little advice as their training revolves around the treating of symptoms rather than uncovering, and also rectifying, the causes of such problems. The Alexander Technique, however, does just this. It shows you the underlying cause, enabling you to eliminate the tension responsible for so many of the ailments that we mistakenly accept as part of the aging process.
Richard Brennan an internationally renowned author, having written five books on the Alexander Technique that have been translated into eight languages. He travels in Europe and the USA giving TV and radio interviews, running workshops and giving lectures. He lives in Galway, Ireland where he runs a busy private practice as well as being the director of the only Irish Alexander teacher training college (STAT approved). www.alexander.ie
