Steps to Beautiful Skin, Hair & Nails
2 3
Youthful skin has abundant collagen making the skin smooth and wrinkle free. Researched-backed Active Collagen has been shown to reduce the depth of deep wrinkles in 28 days. Start taking Active Collagen today for gorgeous skin.
Beautiful, glowing skin comes from within. A very special fatty acid called GLA is required for healthy skin. Skin disorders like cradle cap, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis, wrinkles and dry skin occur when we do not have enough GLA. GLA makes your skin luminescent, dewy and glowing. The main reason our skin becomes dull and thick after menopause is due to the inability to make GLA. It is essential that we take a daily dose of GLA to ensure beautiful skin. GLA is not found in fish or flax oil. GLA SKIN OIL is a concentrated organic GLA supplement. After 3 weeks of taking GLA SKIN OIL your friends will be asking if you have had “work” done.
Your hair, nails and bones need Collagen Plus with biotin. For strong bones and nails and thick, fast growing hair in 60 days take Collagen Plus.

EDITOR’S NOTE
anuary is so often thought of as a time of new goals, reinventing yourself and a sense of hope with the unknown ahead. These ideas seem to reign true while I have been working with the cover girls in 2017. We are in an era where aging is being redefined, sixty is the new forty, and life is full of inconsistent opportunities to evolve. Needless to say, this excites me to no end as I have barely scratched the surface of my bucket list. Working with Arlene Dickson was definitely checking off one of those bucket list items. What was it like? She is exactly what I had hoped she would be. Strong, warm, sincere, and authentic—and not in the #authentic we see so many people misuse nowadays. She has done the work to earn the confidence to be herself in the most down-to-earth way. I respect her for her human factor. It made for an incredible shoot day in Calgary at the Fairmont Palliser. Not to mention our favourite look of the day was by a Canadian Designer Obakki!

FROM “MAKING EVERYTHING” TO MAKING YOU
Feel Beautiful
LOLO is the name of Lorena Ponis’ jewellery and accessories company and it was also her childhood nickname. From girlhood on, this Vancouver designer has been an unstoppable maker.
“M
y parents immigrated from Slovenia and were very hands-on. My mother always believed I could do anything I put my mind to,” says LOLO Jewellery and Accessories founder Lorena Ponis. “Everything we saw on TV or in the store— and I mean everything—she always said, ‘We can make that.’” It would seem the dye was cast for Ponis from a very young age. Even if she hadn’t been born a “maker”, her resourceful mother was going to show Ponis exactly how to become one. Ponis grew up baking, painting, sewing, and in general, proving her mother right by “making everything”. By age nine she launched her first startup. “At the time fundraising for the Ethiopian famine was a big thing,” she explains. “So my idea was to bake and package cookies, sell them to my teachers, and send the money to Africa. I called it Cookie Magic but it should have been called Cookie Tragic because it never really worked out as I planned,” she adds, laughing. But sometimes when life doesn’t work out as we planned it turns out to be a blessing in disguise. This was Ponis’ experience when, well into her career in international business, she found herself launching a jewellery company. “I started making children’s jewellery for fun,” she says. “A few friends carried the pieces in their store, and then people started asking if I made jewellery for adults. I said yes, and before I knew it, things took off. I quit my job six months later.”
Ten years later, Ponis is still designing LOLO’s distinctively clean, classic, and fashionable pieces, which also include a line of leather handbags and clutches. She recently began outsourcing production to accommodate for LOLO’s growth. In addition to the genuine thrill of “creating, controlling, and profiting from” her own brand, Ponis has the privilege of raising two children. That means she’s intimately familiar with the search for that elusive work-life balance. “Honestly, it took me a long time to figure out this whole self-care thing,” she admits. “When you’re Mom, you’re this selfless person, but when you run a business, it’s not possible to always be selfless.” Ponis explains that, in addition to picking up self-care habits like running, she gave herself permission to make LOLO a priority. She also realized her business could benefit her children by teaching them important lessons about problem solving and responsibility. So what makes Ponis most proud when she considers what she’s built? It boils down to the pleasure people feel when they wear her incredibly chic pieces. “So much heart goes into my work,” she says. “When people love my jewellery, it feels like everything comes full circle. It goes from my heart to theirs and back again.” Browse LOLO’s jewellery and accessories at LOLO.ca.
TAKING THE CONFUSION OUT OF Skin Care With her Bella Aura line of skin care solutions, Yasmine Jones combines ancient Berber beauty secrets with Swiss advanced active ingredients—which all add up to a simplified skin care routine.
Y
asmine Jones can easily remember the painful circumstances that lead to the creation of her skin care company, Bella Aura. “My mother had leukemia,” she recalls. “She was in the hospital for months and I was there with her. And the last thing I wanted to do was care for my skin.”
It took Yasmine three years of intensive collaboration with a renowned chemist and scientist to create her Swiss/Moroccan (and proudly Canadian-made) skincare line. What sets Bella Aura apart is its proprietary blend of argan, cactus, neroli, and nigella oils, combined with the Swiss active ingredients that maximize product performance.
Severely stressed by her mother’s health struggles, Jones developed serious skin problems. Her acne became so inflamed it caused scarring. She set out to find solutions, only to waste large amounts of time and money on ineffective products and treatments.
“We call our proprietary blend ‘Kamilah’, which means ‘complete’ in Arabic,” explains Jones. “And that’s what we provide: a complete skin care experience allowing you to use fewer products.”
Then, during a trip to Morocco, she met a herbalist/chemist who believed oils used by the ancient Berbers would restore her skin. Having tried so many other solutions, she was skeptical. But the oils began to produce positive results. “Although I saw progress, I wanted faster results,” says Jones. “I wanted to blend these oils with the active ingredients modern science has discovered. And that’s what led me to create Bella Aura.”
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
In addition to its proprietary blend, Bella Aura products provide that “complete skin care” experience by combining serums and creams into multi-functional emulsions. The upshot is that a product like the Gentle Purifying Cleanser provides multiple beauty benefits, including exfoliation, cleansing, and toning. “We wanted to take the confusion out of skin care,” says Jones. “Active, modern people don’t have time to be layering so many products onto their faces.”
Bella Aura products are also all variously 65-70% certified organic. “But,” explains Jones, “I don’t even market Bella Aura on the basis of being organic because, to me, that should just be a necessity.” Speaking of performance, Jones is elated when she reflects on the lives that her skin care solutions have changed for the better. “I know of one lady who was so sensitive she couldn’t use any skin care products. As a result, her skin was so rough and dry. Bella Aura changed her life! She glows now. “And just the other night I got an email from a customer who had been using Accutane, but using Bella Aura has transformed her skin so much that she no longer feels she needs to wear makeup!” To check out the Essential Energy Boosting Kit, combining all five Bella Aura products into one convenient, low-cost package, visit: bellaaura.com/products/ essential-energy-boosting-kit.html

“I
Tegan Woo has been a passionate tea-drinker her entire life. But when she used plants to recover from stressrelated health problems, she knew she wanted her company Amoda Tea to become a plantbased wellness resource.
’ve always taken life…seriously,” says Amoda Tea founder Tegan Woo, with a chuckle, “but when I was finishing up my internship for my Masters Degree in Hong Kong, everything came to a head.” “Everything”, in Woo’s case, was an overachiever’s assortment of stressors: advanced studies and an early start on entrepreneurship. Woo knew from her adolescence she didn’t want to work for anyone, and after graduating with her Bachelor of Commerce in 2004, she launched Amoda Tea. The concept for the business was—then and now—ingeniously delightful. Amoda started as a subscription-based company that allows tea-lovers to receive a monthly box of premium all-natural teas curated from the world’s best independent tea makers. But in 2011, with her Masters nearly completed, Woo was suffering from the cumulative effects of unrelenting stress. When she returned home to Victoria, her health problems caused her to rapidly drop 15 pounds. “I was taking a bunch of medications for certain health problems without realizing how much damage they were causing to my body,” says Woo. “It forced me to think a lot more about my diet and get in tune with my body. I also began researching herbs intensely.” Her road to recovery inspired Woo to create an even stronger emphasis on wellness in Amoda. Although Amoda’s teas had always been premium and delightfully unique (ever tried “Chocolate Covered Strawberries”?), Woo began to actively highlight healing “superfood” teas like matcha. Amoda’s matcha is 100% pure green tea in powder form, meaning that when you
drink it, you are consuming the whole leaf, rather than just drinking water it has steeped in. One cup of matcha has the antioxidants of ten cups of regular green tea, with health benefits like metabolism boosting and detoxification. “Our wellness teas are created along Chinese Medicine principles,” says Woo. “We work with two Chinese Medicine doctors to incorporate what our ancestors knew so much about and what most of us have lost touch with.” For example, Woo describes how she created Amoda’s Restore Cleansing Tea: “I was feeling annoyed with all the bodynegative and misinformed marketing around ‘detox’ weight loss teas. “In Chinese Medicine, it’s understood when seasons change, it’s time for cleansing— but not in this harsh way, like with laxatives. Restore is made with herbs like chamomile and dandelion root that gently stimulate the smooth flow of liver energy for healthy functioning.” To keep offering her customers the best wellness solutions, Woo seeks out premium teas and ingredients. She recently returned from Japan, where she traveled to source the very best organic matcha. And she expresses the company’s passion for plant-based wellness education through Amoda’s blog. Chic Pieces
TO PRESERVE THE PLANET Jennifer Graham named her organic clothing company Salts + West because salt is an ancient preservative. Preserving the planet through beautiful, sustainable, and ethically produced clothing is exactly what she has set out to do.
“N
ot a lot of people know this, but fashion is the second most polluting industry on the planet, right behind oil and gas,” says organic clothing company Salts + West founder Jennifer Graham. “And it really doesn’t need to be that way.” Indeed, Graham has proven that it doesn’t. Her West Coast-inspired pieces are made with sustainable fabrics like certified organic cotton, viscose from bamboo, and merino wool. These fabrics are certified to be free of toxins that could transfer to the skin. Salts + West clothing is also produced in the Cowichan Valley and Vancouver, providing high quality employment to local women. Best of all? Graham’s clothing is classically chic, functional, and flattering to all body types. If the highly unsustainable “fast fashion” industry is all about pumping out pieces that will be passé next season, Salts + West provides an alternative. “We started in 2005, and I have customers telling me that they still regularly wear the hoodies they bought from us that year,” says Graham. “The clothing lasts and lasts, and the styles remain relevant. “In general, I would say Salts + West represents a lifestyle that’s slower and more thoughtful. To me, that’s what it means to create fashion that’s inspired by nature.” It’s fair to say that Salts + West has a way of creating devoted brand fans. In fact, customers who join the Salts + West mailing list enthusiastically participate in the company’s “Workshop” program. The Workshop is a unique option allows customers to pre-order pieces (such as the latest four hoodies styles they are unveiling)
so that they can receive VIP pricing and first access to new styles. This model also allows Salts + West to carefully plan their production and manage their risks. “There is a lot of competition in this industry for sure,” says Graham. “Especially when we are choosing to do things sustainably and ethically. But we are setting ourselves apart with our style, quality, and brand vision.” Those ethics run deep. They’re expressed through aspects of the business that the average fashion lover might not ever consider. “So often, companies don’t actually know where their supplies come from,” she says. “For all they know, their suppliers have subcontractors who are simply dumping loads of toxic dye into a river in India. “Our dyes, on the other hand, are made in a ‘closed loop’ factory that recycles the water it uses, and doesn’t create polluted water.” And truly, it’s easier to make ethical choices when sustainability happens to feel so luxurious. “Have you ever worn bamboo fleece? It wicks moisture, doesn’t smell, and feels so incredibly soft—like nothing you’ve ever felt!” To browse their pieces or sign up for the mailing list connecting you with Salt + West’s Workshop pre-ordering options, visit SaltsAndWest.com.
How an actress’ on-set announcement launched Emmy-nominated make-up artist JoAnn Fowler’s mission to create vegan, eco-conscious make-up through Sappho New Paradigm
B
ack in the 2000s, when actress Mia Kirshner showed up on the set of “The L Word” and announced she would no longer wear parabens, there was only one appropriate response. “I immediately said, ‘Of course!’ despite the fact I had no idea what that word meant,” laughs JoAnn Fowler, the Emmy-nominated, Leo Award winning make-up artist who was the acclaimed TV series’ Makeup Designer. In order to accommodate Kirshner, Fowler started doing her research. What she discovered about conventional cosmetics sickened her—and set her off on a path that culminated in the creation of her company Sappho New Paradigm. “I read a book called Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Cosmetics Industry,” says Fowler, “and there was a paragraph about a study in 2004 that tested the blood of newborn babies, finding they were contaminated with hundreds of dangerous industrial compounds, including rocket fuel.” That stunning revelation changed Fowler’s life. Most members of her family had suffered from cancer, including Fowler. She had what she considers a minor brush with the disease when she had a cancerous spot removed from her lip. Her sister has Leukemia and has a heavier load to bear. Fowler drew the connection between the troublingly under-regulated industry she was part of and the epidemic of sicknesses and chemical sensitivities around her. And she wanted to become part of the solution.
Fowler experimented with different “natural” cosmetics solutions available at the time, but what she found didn’t meet film industry standards. Plus many of the products marketed as “natural” were anything but, containing dangerous synthetic chemicals. “I knew I didn’t want to take responsibility for causing cancer,” she says. “I wanted to offer an alternative; a truly natural line that performed as well or better than any other high-end cosmetics but with 100% ingredient transparency.” Before she knew it, Fowler was creating Sappho New Paradigm. A self-described “dyslexic artist”, she was suddenly tasked with building a vibrant business from the bottom up. “I’ve been very involved in everything, from shipping to bottle design,” she says, “It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been worth it.” Fowler’s passion for the details shines through when she describes how Sappho New Paradigm is continually evolving into an ever greener company. With its new line up of high performing organic beauty products in glass bottles, Sappho New Paradigm is committed to becoming more sustainable as it grows. “We use a biodegradable additive in the grey plastic tubes that allows the plastic to biodegrade in a landfill somewhere in the two-to-seven-year range,” she says. “Compare that to most plastics, which that can take between 200 to 500 years!” Learn more about Sappho New Paradigm at MySappho.ca.
THE DRINK SUPPORTING HEALTHY DIGESTION
Deliciously Rhoda Chilcott and April Angelini founded the beverage company Route 18 with the intention of nourishing people. They discovered the perfect way to do that with a line of concentrates, called “shrubs,” that finally make apple cider vinegar delicious to drink.
“M
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
ost people who know about the benefits of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar and try to drink it everyday look at it as a chore,” says Route 18 co-founder April Angelini. “Our shrubs take the harsh bite out of apple cider vinegar and make it delicious.”
Those benefits include healthier skin, cholesterol management, immune system support, and healthier digestion. Route 18 shrubs help boost healthy “gut flora”, the microorganisms living in the digestive tract that influence a range of processes within the body.
Angelini and her co-founder Rhoda Chilcott have been friends for over 25 years. For the last 2 years they have also been business partners, creating their unique “shrubs” for people seeking healthy alternatives to the sugary beverages out on the market.
“Most people now know that probiotics (from yogurt and kombucha, for example) are great for gut health,” says Chilcott. “But unpasteurized apple cider vinegar is full of the prebiotics that get into the stomach, clear out the bad stuff, and lay the groundwork for the probiotics that help heal the gut.”
“The word ‘shrub’ has been used since colonial times to describe a concentrated infusion of vinegar, fruit, and sweetener,” explains Angelini. “Typically, it’s mixed with water, spirits, or tea, but we have found so many other unique ways to shrub up everyday recipes like dressings, marinades, reductions, cocktails, and mocktails.”
When they first hatched the idea to create a “nourishing business”, Angelini and Chilcott originally wanted to open a healthy quick service restaurant. But the shrubs they developed as one of their restaurant’s offerings were an instant hit, and they decided to focus their business on the delicious, health-boosting concentrate.
“We like that our shrubs have been such a hit with kids and seniors!” says Chilcott. “We’re currently developing a half sugar and sugar free shrub concentrate option which will be available early spring 2017.”
By focusing on shrubs, the two friends created a business that gave them the time for family. After all, the business itself wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the inspiration their children provided.
Route 18’s distinctive spin on the colonial method for preserving fruit involves maximizing the health benefits of the shrub. They combine organic BC fruit, organic cane sugar, and—of course—unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. When left unpasteurized, with its beneficial culture of bacteria and acids (called “the mother”) intact, apple cider vinegar provides powerhouse health benefits.
“We truly feel blessed that we are able to create this product and that so many people have fallen in love with,” says Chilcott. “The support we receive from mentors, family, friends, and customers is incredible!” To order Route 18’s shrubs, visit Route18ShrubClub.com

FASHION THAT
Heals
Firma Energywear founder Yvonne Hogenes has built a career on fashion innovations that support health. So when she discovered a yarn that could increase circulation, enhance metabolism, and even reduce the appearance of cellulite, she knew she had to share it with the world.
F
irma Energywear founder Yvonne Hogenes recalls her first foray into what she calls “healthy fashion” with a chuckle: “The bra I set out to customize was so orthodic it pretty much stood up on its own when I set it on my desk.” At the time, Hogenes was responding to a common request from her Malary’s Fashion Network customers for a bra with proper lift and support that wouldn’t hurt to wear. Eventually, she created the TAB Bra, a fully engineered, custom-fitted bra without underwires or elastic. “That was 15 years ago,” recalls Hogenes. “It set me on a journey of exploring how we can be smarter about what we wear, and how we can fuse health and fashion together.” With Firma Energywear, Hogenes is exploring the fusion of health and fashion more deeply than ever. The revolutionary clothing company creates garments using a polyamide-based yarn with bioactive minerals that don’t wash out, because they are part of the yarn’s very matrix. So why should we wear clothing with “bioactive minerals” like amethyst? According to Hogenes, these minerals absorb the body’s infrared waves and direct them back as far-infrared waves into the body. Far-infrared waves are electromagnetic, safely stimulating the body through their strong interaction with the water molecules that make up 70 percent of the body. This enhances beneficial processes like circulation and cellular metabolism.
some seriously desirable health, cosmetic, and performance benefits. Fat loss, reduced appearance of cellulite, relief from joint pain, improved circulation, stable body temperatures, and increased energy— Firma Energywear fans have experienced all of the above and more. Sound too good to be true? Hogenes acknowledges that she encounters plenty of skeptics, and she always encourages them to put on the clothing and tell her if they like how it feels. “And those are always the people who come back after they’ve been wearing the clothing for a while and report that they’re having all of these amazing experiences,” she says. “Their joints don’t hurt, their cellulite isn’t showing. They say, ‘It might be in my head, but I just feel so much better!’” Fortunately, Firma Energywear doesn’t just make people feel good. They look great too. The line is stylish, sleek, and modern. And Hogenes explains that the polyamide yarn feels silky and exceptionally soft on the skin. “It’s a wonderful thing to be able to wear clothing that is beautiful, feels like silk, and gives unbelievable health benefits.” Use the coupon code “Arlene” on FirmaEnergywear.com to receive free shipping and 10 percent off on your order.

THE POWER TO MANAGE YOUR HEALTH at your
Fingertips
After co-founding the successful startup Points. com, Darlene Higbee Clarkin changed her industry focus to address leading health issues through the power of digital technologies.
D
arlene Higbee Clarkin has been making waves with her company, WholeLife HealthTech Inc., by providing the health industry with white label technology platforms to deliver evidence-based nutrition, health products, and lifestyle recommendations to their clients. WholeLife HealthTech recently launched “MyHealthyGut,” the first-of-its-kind evidence-based app to help individuals suffering from general digestive health issues, from gluten intolerance to celiac disease. “There are other health management apps out there, for sure,” she says. “But it’s very important to me that our apps are evidencebased and have a proven ability to help people.” The app was developed in collaboration with Registered Dietitian, Desiree Nielsen, and Dr. Justine Dowd, a researcher at the University of Calgary, and is supported by the University of Calgary (Faculty of Kinesiology), Canadian Celiac Association (Calgary, Vancouver and Kamloops Chapters), Mitacs, and the Calgary Foundation. The app has been featured on Global News and Breakfast Television. With MyHealthyGut now available to download for free with in-app purchases for various packages, Higbee Clarkin looks forward to seeing its social impact. Higbee Clarkin’s shift to the health industry stems from seeing her father struggling with health complications associated with diabetes. This set her on her new path to becoming a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, realizing that she

could use technology to deliver affordable and accessible nutritional and lifestyle recommendations. “Not everybody can see a holistic nutritionist,” Higbee Clarkin says matter-offactly. “Some people live in remote places. Some don’t have the money. We need to connect these people with the tools and expert advice they need to manage their health.” In 2012, this lead her to the launch of WholeLife Holistic Nutrition Inc., an online portal bringing industry health experts and partners together to create a series of mobile apps and the ability to generate an online personalized health report. You don’t need to talk to Higbee Clarkin for long before you realize how deeply she cares about her company’s mission. That sense of passionate concern for people continues to fuel its development. Before her industry shift, Higbee Clarkin spent 30 years in technology supporting the airline and retail loyalty programs. She cofounded and led the technology development and launch of Points.com, which is a publiclytraded company, bringing state-of-the-art loyalty commerce platforms and products to individuals and businesses worldwide. PROJECT HER CREATES A CROWDFUNDING COMMUNITY FOR
World-Changing Women Fresh Publisher Shelly Lynn Nellis and multi-entrepreneur Donna West know exactly what it takes to launch women-run businesses. So when they created Project Her, a crowdfunding platform for women entrepreneurs, they made it a source of encouragement as well as financial support.
“I
’m at four start-ups now,” says Project Her co-founder Donna West. “Organic produce delivery… healthy dog treats…I can’t help it! I get experience in a certain area—the food industry, for example—and I just want to create better solutions.” West’s Project Her co-founder and Fresh Publisher Shelly Lynn Nellis can feel her pain. “Honestly, it can feel like a kind of insanity when you’re an entrepreneur. You really can’t help yourself. You need to see your ideas through to reality.” West and Nellis are perfectly aware that they’re poster children for the perkbased crowdfunding website they’re on the verge of launching. And that makes them confident that what they’ve created is exactly what their fellow women entrepreneurs and business owners need to succeed. Project Her works the way other perk-based crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo do. Clients can use it as a free platform to run campaigns that spread the news about their businesses or business ideas. But Project Her’s clients are exclusively women who own 51% or more of a company or who have a new product they are manufacturing or creating. These campaigns can potentially inspire people from all over the world—anybody who sees the campaign and wants to get on board—to become financial supporters. And just as with other popular crowdfunding websites, campaign supporters get perks or rewards from the businesses they are funding. What makes Project Her different from platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo,
however, is the community it connects its special brand of clients to. In addition to crowdfunding campaigns, Project Her clients will be able to access a network of like-minded women entrepreneurs, seasoned mentors, and pro-women marketing opportunities. In other words, Project Her doesn’t just provide cash. It provides community. “We recognize that women have a different experience of entrepreneurship,” says Nellis. “In many ways the road to success is a steeper and more lonely climb for us.” “We know all about the discouragement that comes with struggling for success as a woman,” adds West. “We get it. We’re moms; we’ve worked that ‘double shift’ at work and at home. And we’ve experienced the pain of not being taken seriously, not being given a chance.” West and Nellis have been through it all: the hard lessons and exhilarating successes of striking out on their own and making their ideas realities. They believe passionately in the capability of women to create worldchanging products and services—especially when they’re given a little support. K’PURE KEEPS BODY CARE SAFE, NATURAL, AND
Pure for Families
When entrepreneur and fitness professional Karen Johnson discovered her newborn son had abnormally high levels of aluminum and plastics in his system, she mobilized for action. The result was K’pure Natural Body Care.
“K
’pure definitely happened by accident,” says K’pure Natural Body Care founder Karen Johnson. “I had a big shock related to my child. And you know how, as a mother, nothing else can get you moving like the need to take better care of your children.” The shock Johnson experienced would get almost any mother fired up to find solutions. Shortly after the birth of her youngest son, she had a life-changing visit at her naturopath. It turned out her infant son had abnormally high levels of aluminum and plastics in his system. Johnson was flabbergasted. As a personal trainer and founder of a successful fitness studio, she led a healthy lifestyle. She worked exceptionally hard to take great care of her four children. And her youngest son was breastfed—so how had this happened? The culprit turned out to be the aluminum-loaded deodorant and plasticscontaining lotions she applied to her body
everyday. She had simply passed the toxic ingredients she was absorbing through her skin onto her son through her breast milk.
products. But I had no idea I was starting a business when I began sharing that deodorant with my personal training clients.”
“How can the safest, most miraculous and pure food for our children become a vehicle for toxins?” says Johnson. “It was unacceptable to pass this garbage onto my son, and it was equally unacceptable to be contaminating my own precious body with it.”
From bath soaks to bug repellent, K’pure’s body care solutions delight and soothe the senses even as they provide safe alternatives to toxic conventional products. And truly, Johnson has applied her bootcamp instructor’s sense of getting the details right to her product line. It’s why fans of her line call them “lifesavers” and “the best natural product line ever”. It’s why even “natural deodorant skeptics” become believers when they try Get Closer.
Johnson is a take-charge individual, with multiple successful businesses under her belt. So she began researching natural deodorant recipes and trying them out. She tested out her batches on her personal training and bootcamp clients, who started spreading the word about Johnson’s incredibly effective and luxurious deodorant. Soon, she could barely make it fast enough to feed the demand. “Five years after I started trying out deodorant recipes I’ve the Get Closer All Natural Deodorant perfected. And K’Pure is now an entire line of all-natural body care
“What choice do we have except to do the right thing for our kids?” asks Johnson. “Out of the million decisions you make about how to take care of your family, I want the decision about what you put on your and their bodies to be super easy.” To shop for K’Pure Natural Body Care solutions, visit KPureNaturals.com/ Collections/All

You’ve been outspoken in your view that you don’t need a romantic relationship in order to be a fulfilled and successful person. Why do you think people frequently feel the freedom to suggest that you’d be happier if you “found somebody”? It has traditionally been the norm to believe that being in a relationship is what completes someone. This goes back as far as procreating. We coupled to create families and we lived in tribes to create efficiencies. Given that I can somewhat understand how people from my generation feel awkward when I am alone or believe that somehow I must feel lonely as a result of being single. But it’s so not true. I have a group of friends I thought were totally cool with my singlehood until one day they bravely asked me why I wasn’t with someone and wouldn’t it be great if I was? I was totally surprised. And I guess for them it would have been great because everyone would be in pairs. Kind of like Noah’s Ark! It’s funny in hindsight but at the time I was thinking, “Wow, ladies—maybe I have it right and you don’t. Ever think of that?!”

Kidding aside, today’s world is different. The rules of relationship engagement are changing. Along with the feminist movement has come the realization that we are not a weaker sex and we don’t actually need a man to hunt for us while we gather. Don’t get me wrong. I love love and being in love is a great thing. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a relationship for yourself. As long as you make sure you know why you do want one. For me, I have found joy in getting to know people and in having relationships “with” them rather than feeling I have to be “in” a relationship with one individual in order to be happy. I have a friend who said she did not want to be alone so she went through a series of damaging relationships to find that someone. I think that’s sad because really she just had “lonely” and “alone” confused. They are most definitely not the same thing. I can tell you that I have been lonelier in a bad relationship than I ever have been out of one and alone. And frankly we are only ever as lonely as we allow ourselves to be. Who knows, maybe there is a man reading this out there who fits my views, our lives work together, and we will find each other and ride off into the sunset. Or not. Either way, I will still enjoy the sunset and the ride. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
You’ve been married twice before. You’ve also shared that you’ve been in relationships that “tore [your] very soul apart and left [you] desperately unhappy and marginalized”. Without disclosing more personal details than you feel comfortable with, what did these experiences teach you about yourself? In life we make choices. Some good for us; some not so good for us. But all of our choices are learning experiences and each one brings richness to our lives in ways we may not understand at the time. It’s gut-wrenching to lose what you think is half of you—until you realize that you were never really “whole” with them. “You complete me” was a wonderful romantic line in Jerry Maguire. Loving who you are, with or without someone, is certainly not as romantic a notion but it’s far more meaningful in my view.
How do you practice self-love? It’s hard. Self-love requires liking yourself on all levels. The dichotomy of loving who you are professionally but not liking how you look is one many women face. My generation, and sadly even today’s generation, is inundated with advertising that reinforces a false idea of what a perfect woman looks like. So every day you have to try and erase a tape that goes on in your head about what you were raised to believe a perfect woman is. It’s pretty darn hard to be tall, lanky, and have perfect features when you are five feet three and far from perfect. And seriously, who created the concept of a “perfect” women? The media; nobody else. There is no “perfect”. There is just you being perfectly yourself. And all the plastic surgery or Botox in the world won’t change how you feel inside.
How difficult is it to have healthy relationships and still be proudly and happily single? Is our culture biased towards people in traditional romantic relationships?
If you could have given yourself one piece of advice as a young woman before you got married, what would it have been?
It’s not difficult if you find someone who allows you to be yourself. This is why a marriage with a friend may be much more likely to succeed than a marriage with someone you are instantly physically attracted to. I think the notion of traditional romantic relationships is changing, as I said.
The wrong marriage (and the ensuing divorce or unhappiness) is a tough way to find out who you really are. A wrong relationship doesn’t save you. It can, however, destroy you. Figure out yourself first. Don’t look for someone else to create your happiness.
But frankly, when it comes to women and aging, society is still really biased. I find it amusing that older men who are successful are seen as a real catch while older women who are successful are seen as intimidating and therefore less appealing. What a bunch of crap that is. It’s just so stereotypical. I know so many older women who are wonderful humans, confident with themselves and with much to give.
bell hooks says that, “To love well is the task in all meaningful relationships, not just romantic bonds.” What are your meaningful relationship and how do you “love well” within these relationships?
I also want to say something regarding healthy business relationships. When you are single and in business it’s important you show up as being okay with yourself. Be unabashed about being the single person at a couples’ event. When I was younger and showed up at events alone—even as the CEO I was, the men would want to pair me into discussions with their wives. It was more comfortable for them to believe that I would have more in common with the women in the room rather than the business people (who at the time largely happened to be men). It was really predictable. And so stereotypical. That doesn’t happen today because I don’t allow it to. I speak to whom I want—wives, husbands, CEOs, or the team members under them. I engage with people, not with genders or statuses. You’ve said, “for now I am most happily living with exactly the right woman. Me.” What makes you the right woman for you? I have finally found myself and am very comfortable with who I am. I like my values. I like that I allow myself to be wrong without feeling stupid and to be right without feeling arrogant. And that I understand that the more I know the more I realize what I don’t know. I am an introvert on the tenth scale and I do crave downtime but given my career I often spend my days and nights in full-on intense people situations. I am a thinker and I wish I had been a philosopher. That’s a joke. I don’t think that deeply.
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
I struggle with really letting people into my life. I may be a public person but I am a very private individual. I’ve always said that at my funeral there may be many people there but there will be few who really know me. My nature is to help others but not to accept help from others. Needless to say, this isn’t very conducive to letting others into your life. Having said that, I luckily have made some great friends in all the cities and places I spend real time. They range from famous to not. And rich to not. They all have one thing in common: they like me for myself. They make me better because they are smart, kind and unafraid to tell me when I am full of BS. They also don’t guilt me for my nomadic lifestyle. I can pick up with them where I left off, whether it’s been weeks or years since I last saw them. These friendships are ones I have purposely worked at and actively strive to maintain. Friendship is a two way street and it’s difficult when you live a life on the move to not drift away. You are known as the “soft dragon” and you’ve also written about the power of persuasion as an alternative to aggression or manipulation. How do you define persuasion and what makes it so powerful? Persuasion is about three things in life and in business. If you need someone to do something, then be genuine, honest, and look for the win-win. Sure, you can manipulate people into getting what you want when you want it, but that only rewards one person: you. The power of positive persuasion is in its ability to enable a joint journey to success, rather than a single-minded selfish approach to winning at all costs. I know far too many people who operate in the latter category: intent on their own wealth and goals at the expense of any and all around them.

“Respect is earned. No title gives it to you. No person can decree it for you. You have to gain it, and that’s done day by day, hour by hour, and minute by minute.”
Has your softer approach ever worked against you? Did you have to learn how to use your sensitivity as a strength rather than as a weakness or a vulnerability? Probably. I can’t think of a specific example where it has but I am guessing it’s highly likely there are many. It wouldn’t change my approach even if it did work against me because then I’d have to be someone I am not. I never apologize for my emotions. Business is emotional and about people. Women have great sensitivity and I think empathy is an under-valued tool in effective leadership. I still like to trust people before I distrust them. I also rely heavily on my intuition with people. There’s an old adage that says, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.” So it’s okay to be vulnerable but it’s not okay to be stupid about people and keep letting them walk all over you. Vulnerability is not a word that any leader likes but we all have some, I suppose. I wouldn’t say sensitivity equals vulnerability, unless you let your emotions rule you and don’t use your brain in decision-making as well. Pure emotionally-led decisions in business rarely end well. How can a woman practice kindness while still commanding respect? Being kind is simply a value you have to cultivate and practice daily. And I can assure you when you practice it you will be happier yourself. In work, it can show up in many ways but one example is in providing respectful feedback. This is hard and something I still work at. I’m seen as demanding when it comes to how any one of my companies deliver our products and services. Perhaps I have become harder with time and experience, but I hopefully haven’t become unkind. I tend to give critiques before I offer congrats and I know that’s not always seen as kind. In my desire to drive great work, I sometimes forget to couch my feedback in a way that recognizes the work that’s been done. So I work at it. Daily. And I accept that I need to always remind myself of how kind I sound to others. Respect is earned. No title gives it to you. No person can decree it for you. You have to gain it, and that’s done day by day, hour by hour, and minute by minute. Show up. Be present. Respect your team. Empower them. Be kind but also decisive and firm in declaring your vision and what success looks like for all of you, together. “I have never accepted the notion that being a woman puts me at a disadvantage. I don’t see myself as the woman in the room. I see myself as the businessperson in the room. Especially in the boardroom. ”
How has your experience of being a woman in business changed since the days you started your company up to the present day? When I started out in business, I was very quickly aware that how I looked, dressed, and presented myself mattered. Also, without realizing it, I guess I took advantage of being a woman. That didn’t mean low-cut dresses or flirting. It meant letting men think they were smarter and could teach me about business because I couldn’t possibly know what they did. Which frankly was true. And they did teach me—I became a great listener and was a sponge in meetings watching how those men in charge handled their roles. It also meant taking a back seat in rooms more often than I should have. It meant allowing others to take credit for my ideas because they said them louder and claimed them as their own. These are lessons I learned the hard way. I have never accepted, however, the notion that being a woman puts me at a disadvantage. I don’t see myself as the woman in the room. I see myself as the businessperson in the room. Especially in the boardroom. I now know I add real value and that I have good ideas that deserve to be heard. I don’t need credit for them every single time because that’s not my style. I am happy when they get accepted whether I get the credit or not. This could be seen as a weakness, but I don’t see it that way. When you look at the current political and social landscape, are you feeling excited or nervous for young women in business? This question is so hard to answer. To paraphrase Dickens, “It is the best of times, it is the worst of times.” What makes me excited is how young women are seeing themselves. Many are taking themselves more seriously from a much younger age. They understand their value sooner than my generation did. They are more poised, less fixated on their bodies and their physical appearance, and more focused on their values. Young women are controlling their own financial lives for the first time. They are buying homes at a younger age or moving out and renting on their own. They are entering new fields of education. All of this is exciting and will lead to great strides being made. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
“I hate the word ‘retirement.’ It’s a notion that was developed to move an aging workforce aside. I will stop when I die, because sitting on a beach for the rest of my days is not, for me, in any way enticing.”
I am nervous, however, because the speed at which business is accepting women into senior and management roles is not as quick. The business world is going through so much upheaval and the traditional roles for both men and women are being questioned and tested. Business must evolve in all ways: from how it deals with maternity/paternity leave, to childcare, to training while women are away, to—above all else—equal pay and equal rights. These are big weighty issues that must be resolved. Do you have any advice for female entrepreneurs or businesspeople who may be feeling marginalized, lonely, or discouraged? Yes. Be brave. Don’t use those feelings you may have of being alone or discouraged as excuses to not change the situation or, when necessary, yourself. If people make you feel stupid or unheard then they are the ones who have the issue. Don’t take on their problems. These people are sometimes men. And sometimes they are women. You will recognize them regardless of their gender because they make you feel somehow “less than”. The good news is you can only feel as marginalized as you allow someone to make you feel. Confidence is therefore critical and it starts with self-worth and realizing that your opinion has the right to be heard as much as anyone else’s. But it’s also about realizing that sometimes you aren’t right and that their feedback has nothing to do with your gender. Sometimes your opinion isn’t maybe as fully formed as theirs and perhaps you don’t have the same experience or understanding of the issue. It’s hard to discern between the two scenarios sometimes and difficult to not interpret everything that makes you feel discouraged as the direct result of a gender issue. But that’s where you have to be self-analytical, self-reflective, and self-aware. Are you blaming the room or are you owning the room and the role you play in being heard and understood? When you think about the future and what’s in store for you, what makes you most excited? The future? I see so many things. After all, I am an entrepreneur and can’t help but see the opportunities ahead of us. Helping other people’s businesses is my lifelong work goal and that still has me super excited. I have created the first accelerator in Canada for the packaged goods businesses focused on food and health products.
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
It’s exciting and exhilarating to help Canadian businesses grow and to help diversify our economy. I also am investing in these businesses to help capitalize them and get them to the next level. Agriculture and health are core competencies in this country and there is so much opportunity for us to build on. In life, what excites me is my family, my kids and grandkids. They motivate me to be a better person and to work harder at the life long relationships that come with having children and having infinite love for them. By the way, I hate the word “retirement.” It’s a notion that was developed for the wrong reasons to move an aging workforce aside. We do certainly need to move out of our roles to make room for younger generations to take jobs. But we don’t need to force people to stop working and disregard the experience and expertise they have. There has to be a way to better engage seniors and leverage their smarts. I will stop when I die, because sitting on a beach for the rest of my days is not, for me, in any way enticing. Being comfortable with solitude is something every woman should practice. So what’s your favourite way to spend an afternoon all to yourself? I love to walk. When I walk, I am surrounded by the beauty of nature. I realize how small I am in the scale of the world and how lucky I am to enjoy its beauty. Walking forces thinking. Or sometimes it just clears your mind. And when it’s not walking, it’s reading and listening to great music. And there may be wine involved at least some of those times. I would say that the thing age has given me is a true appreciation of time with myself. And conversely, it’s also given me a true appreciation of time spent with good people who make me think harder, be better, and live more fully. Time alone lets me recharge, refocus, get centered, and find peace with myself. These are critical things if you want to then go out into the world and take it on. You start with a sense of you. And that comes from spending time with yourself. Everyone should do it. It’s harder than you think but well worth the effort. _______________________________________________________ Connect with Arlene Dickinson on social media: Twitter @arlenedickinson Instagram @arlenedickinson Facebook @arlenedickinson LinkedIn @arlenedickinson freshmag.ca | FRESH MAGAZINE | 39

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLINIC? I’ve created a warm and welcoming space where patients feel comfortable and can expect expert, natural treatments and customized care. My philosophy is to listen to the patients’ concerns and then use my understanding of anatomy and how our faces age to create an effective plan to address those concerns. I always aim for a natural look so that people leave feeling refreshed and relaxed.
WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON SKINCARE? Skincare is one of my passions and is something that I believe benefits everyone. It starts with having high quality skincare products and a customized regimen tailored to individual skin concerns. There are five key components to an anti-aging skin regimen. The most important is to use a sunscreen every single day. Sunscreens have the most evidence for anti-aging benefits and skin cancer prevention. Use a broadspectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 daily. Second on my list is a retinol. Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E are number three. Fourth are exfoliants; and I often recommend both chemical (alpha hydroxy acids) and physical exfoliants (scrub). Finally, there are ingredients such as peptides, growth factors and DNA repair enzymes which can give you additional benefits. Not only is each product important; it is equally important how they work together when combined in a regimen for your skin.
to manage a number of different skin concerns. It can target brown spots (age spots and sun freckles) as well as redness (broken blood vessels, redness from rosacea, and sun damage). IPL treatments are great for improving overall tone and texture. In addition, some heat targets the deeper parts of your skin stimulating the production of collagen, which helps to soften fine lines and wrinkles.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CAREER CHALLENGE? Definitely work-life balance—something that is a struggle for most of us who have a family and a career. I try my best to be fully present at home when I’m at home and the same when I’m at work. I know that I’m incredibly fortunate to have a beautiful family and a career that I love so I will continue to strive for balance in my life and I’m sure this is something I’ll always be working to improve.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU BACK TO VANCOUVER FROM TEXAS? Both my husband and I were born and raised in Vancouver and our families are here so we were always hoping to come back to the west coast. We have two young children, which made it even more important to be around family, and it feels so good to be home. Vancouver is a fantastic city.
WHAT BRINGS YOU THE MOST SATISFACTION AT WORK? It’s so rewarding to have a patient return to my office after doing what I’ve recommended and seeing not only their skin looking better but also that they feel so much better. That applies to both the medical dermatology side of my practice and the cosmetic side. Skin problems take a significant emotional and psychological toll, so it’s incredibly rewarding to see a patient improve in terms of their skin and also their well-being. To get in touch with Dr. Sutton, email info@suttoncosmetic.com
THERE ARE SO MANY SKINCARE PRODUCTS OUT THERE. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT’S BEST? I offer patients products that have evidence behind their use and that I have great clinical experience with. Several of the ingredients we use in anti-aging regimens are highly unstable and difficult to formulate. Unfortunately, many people spend money on products that won’t deliver the results they’re hoping for. It’s helpful to have a dermatologist assess your skin and recommend products tailored to your specific concerns. What I currently recommend to patients are products that I’ve worked with for a long time, have seen their development and evolution over time and have come to expect fantastic results.
WHAT LASER TREATMENTS DO YOU OFFER AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THOSE? I offer IPL, which is Intense Pulsed Light in my office. It’s an amazing procedure freshmag.ca | FRESH MAGAZINE | 41

ULTE RIOR MOTIF CO L L A B O R ATIO N
T
his fall, an opportunity arose that required me to open up and become vulnerable in a public way. I was invited to join a group of women sharing our alter egos in an art collective called Ulterior Motif. Interestingly, 2016 was a year where many people had asked me to share my story. For so many years I held back, but it eventually got to a point where I could no longer avoid it. What better way to start than the way I have always expressed my artistic self: photography. My alter egos were not formed of hiding anything. It was quite the opposite; they came to fruition due to my reality. Intense life experiences have formed different sides of my personality at various times. This issue’s Crystal Carson Report will give you a better understanding of the co-creation process between the founder, photographer, and myself for Ulterior Motif. Be sure to check out CrystalCarsonReport.com to learn more and watch the behind-thescenes video.
Q&A WITH THE FOUNDER OF ULTERIOR MOTIF: ANNIE CRANFIELD What is Ulterior Motif? Ulterior Motif is a photography series based around women’s alter egos; an ego that has been suppressed, that is still unknown and unfulfilled; a dream or a manifestation of our concentrated self, one that we choose to not show out of fear, lack of confidence, or societal restrictions. Why is it important to start this conversation? In a world of Instagram filters, Photoshop, and the general distortion of women’s images, I wanted to create a platform where women were free to express who they really were, with whom they identified, or to explore parts of their personalities they never had. It is my hope that this platform will create a sense of commonality between women. I believe the exploration, development, and acknowledgment of our alter egos can help drive the growth of our true self. How did you select your subjects and photographers? I selected women from all walks of life: from teachers, to entrepreneurs, to artists, to mothers. The most important part of this project was variety; from the subjects to the photographers capturing their egos. I chose underground photographers, some of them extremely talented students. I wanted to keep this project as raw as possible. I allowed each photographer creative reign to interpret each alter ego.
44 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca
What was the biggest lesson learned in creating the first collection? The first collection was a lesson for all of us. I don’t think we really understood the magnitude of the message until all 36 pictures were hanging on the wall. Seeing all of these women’s alter egos—the suppression, pain, and desire for freedom—sparked conversations of real importance to our society.
Q&A WITH MY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER: CHARLOTTE KROPHOLLER Tell us a bit about yourself. I was born and raised in Amsterdam. As a student of art history and photography, portrait photography always had my interest. When you take a portrait, you create a new reality. It is a space for intimacy, where viewer and the one who is portrayed come together. That’s why I prefer when the eyes look straight in the camera. The viewer is confronted with their own thoughts and interpretations. A portrait is not only about the subject but about the photographer and the audience. I really enjoyed working on this project. The alter egos are universal, and many women (and men) can relate to them and reflect on where these alter egos meet their own. What interested you about Ulterior Motif? I love to work together for the greater good. The Ulterior Motif exhibition fundraiser was a way for me to contribute to Beauty Night Society, an amazing charity. It was wonderful to see women opening up about their experiences, deepest fears and longings. It was inspiring to see how they were empowered by accepting the different sides of themselves instead being ashamed and keeping them secret. What is your creative process? For me, it was important to look at the overall story first. I was searching for the common underlying drive of the three alter egos. It had to fit together not only visually but in terms of meaning as well. It had to be three different versions of one person; not three separate portraits. CARSON-MAN I have a very direct, apparently intimidating and straightforward approach in business; often referred to as masculine. This pours over into my personal life. It starts with my sense of humor and is completed by my tomboy personality. It always has me hanging with the boys. This side of me came from being bullied by the popular, smart, athletic and pretty girls in elementary and high school. I really only had the opportunity to hang out with boys. They called me Carson. In male friendships, I found comfort that was withheld by the girls. It formed a part of my personality that is still active under certain circumstances.

BELLEMESSENGER When I was 15 years old I was in a car accident. My body was thrown from the back middle seat into the windshield. In fear of the car blowing up, I pulled my body out to jump into the ditch and find safety. As I climbed up the steep slope to get to the road, the dirt slid underneath me into the ditch. My body couldn’t fight anymore. I made the choice to stop fighting; to let my lungs fill with water, and to let go of my life. I had a near death experience. I saw the light, and my life flashed before my eyes. They managed to pull my body out and resuscitate me. The healing process was long and tumultuous but it came with many gifts and the ability to channel messages. I was brought back with a greater purpose that continues to unfold.

VERONICAMARTYR I was raised Catholic. My patron saint is Veronica: the woman who was willing to sacrifice herself to wipe Jesus’ face and help him carry the cross. There is a long story to my Veronica. My parents went through bankruptcy and divorce, and my little brother passed away. My brother was a soulmate, my reason to live and my best friend. We were like twins. I developed an unwavering ability to do absolutely anything during my family’s times of need. I have a truly selfless love and devotion to my family that I cannot put into words.

The Story of a Truly Pr
H
ow can I improve my smile? I’m often asked this simple question. I have been blessed to work with many people from all walks of life and have yet to come up with a simple answer. Improving a smile is more than the sum of a few dental procedures. A smile is who you are and who you strive to be. So the question is: who do I want to be?
Like all of my patients, Rita first came to me for “basic” dental work. When we first met in 2000, she had some esthetic concerns but only felt that she could address functional issues. This is a common misconception I see from many patients. Rita had various dental needs and her financial considerations only allowed very rudimentary corrections to her smile via smile esthetic bonding; however, the bonding required continual repair and maintenance due to Rita’s bite. By 2014, Rita left our practice because of financial reasons. While we are saddened by any decision to leave our practice, we continue to provide unwavering support to all our patients. In September of this year, Rita returned to our practice. I was elated to see her again and completely understood the circumstance for her return. Rita explained that she had gone through some significant changes in her personal life that prompted her to want to revisit options for addressing her esthetic concerns and added, “As soon as I was able to return to Dr. Mah, I did so. I would not have left his practice otherwise as he is an excellent dentist.” I was flattered by her trust and it reinforced how much a value my patients and the impact I have on their lives. Like so many, Rita was at a crossroads in her life and was searching for answers. Specifically, she no longer was asking me, “how can I improve my smile?” Rita was now asking herself, “who do I want to be?” We started, as I always do, with a conversation. I asked her what prompted her to return. Rita’s response was heartfelt and one that I hear often. She replied that alternative dental practices, while less expensive, lacked the level of expertise Smile City Square Dental offered. She added that her overall experience at other dental practices could not match the level of care she had experienced with us. “I was thrilled to return to Dr. Mah; I was fully confident that my teeth would not only be restored to better health but that he would transform my smile with his expertise,” she beamed. Rita then continued to tell me about significant personal changes in her life including a move from Vancouver to Kelowna. It was apparent that Rita was at a critical juncture in her life and that her next destination, both literal and figurative, would redefine how she perceived herself. I could feel a sense of “becoming” with Rita. As Rita told me more about herself, her eyes lit up. She could see herself changed and living the quality of life that she deserved. Rita exuded the sense of anticipation that inspired me to embark on her personal journey with her. I was humbled to hear her say, “I had no reservations throughout the process. I trusted Dr. Mah fully; I knew that he would do all that he could, to the best of his abilities within my budget and given the restrictions of my teeth and structure of my bite.” I was not improving her smile, we were improving her life—together!
RITA Rita’s smile anchored her to her past. We often take for granted how much self-confidence is tied to our smiles. Rita had been bothered by her smile for years so her perception of herself began to erode; thankfully, she took action. It was time for Rita to transition to the next phase of her life and only her smile could lead the way. This is a story that I am very familiar with. Our hopes and dreams are intrinsically connected to how we feel about ourselves. We all receive what we feel we deserve in our lives; generally nothing more than that. All of life’s experiences influence our perceived level of deservingness. I’ve had the privilege of working with many patients who, unfortunately, had a negative perception of their smile. This played a major role on how they perceived themselves and negatively impacted their level of deservingness. Giving someone the smile that they have always dreamed of has such a profound effect on how they perceive themselves. A smile that fills you with pride becomes a catalyst in raising your level of deservingness. Essentially, feeling good about yourself is about feeling good about your smile. With a renewed confidence and attitude, you’re able to move forward and seek out meaningful experiences and achieve higher goals. You can now overcome previous obstacles in your life because you feel you deserve more.
iceless Transformation By DR. KELVIN P. MAH For Rita, I realized that confidence in her smile would be pivotal to her journey ahead. It was critical to me that Rita felt that her concerns were heard. I make an earnest effort to listen to everything—including what is not said. Sometimes patients are overwhelmed with the thought of dramatic change but don’t realize that I am here listening carefully for what you are truly asking. Change takes place from the inside out and is a personal process that I am humbled to share. I understand that trust and communication are key. So we gathered clinical records including very detailed photographs and met multiple times as I reviewed the records with her. When we finalized a plan, Rita was surprised that fewer teeth would be needed to be involved than what she originally assumed. We would only need to work with six front teeth. Rita later told us, “Dr. Mah takes the time to explain every step of his work, reviewing x-rays and detailing all available options and implications of each option. Although I have moved to Kelowna, I intend to continue as Dr. Mah’s patient despite the longer travel required. He’s that good!” Wow, what a compliment! We first brightened her smile with Zoom Whitening. I then focused on reshaping her gums around her front teeth. This often overlooked procedure is critical. Think of your gums surrounding your teeth as a frame surrounds artwork. The frame can enhance or detract from the artwork and we wanted Rita’s gums to enhance her smile. We then proceeded with preparing Rita’s upper front six teeth for porcelain crowns. People are hesitant to utilize artificial products when it comes to their smile but the porcelain that is available today is very lifelike and strong. Finally, I also completed some very minor cosmetic treatment to her lower front teeth. As you can see in the photographs, there was a dramatic change in Rita’s smile. This is reflected in Rita. Even her eyes are smiling in her photo! “The procedure was very successful; Dr. Mah did an amazing job! I feel increased confidence with my new smile. I’m truly appreciative of all that Dr. Mah has done for me in restoring and maintaining my dental health. Compared to before my dental work, my smile has improved significantly. I no longer cover my mouth with my hand to hide my teeth.” Hearing these words is better sweet. I appreciate her heartfelt gratitude and acknowledge how difficult it must have been to live without the confidence in her smile and, to a greater extent, without the confidence in herself. With old patients, returning patients, and those still unsure of what it means to have a smile that they truly deserve, I ask to look beyond the dental procedures and ask the question of worth. What
do you want out of life? What do you deserve? The simple answer is happiness and your smile should project that. Rita is a great example of our approach and how we how we’ve enriched each other’s lives. “I would tell new patients, as I have told my friends and family, that Dr. Mah and his team are excellent, trustworthy and truly skilled with dental work. Dr. Mah takes the time to explain every step of his work, reviewing x-rays and detailing all available options and implications of each option. I was thrilled to return to Dr. Mah; I was fully confident that my teeth would not only be restored to better health but that he would transform my smile with his expertise. I feel increased confidence with my new smile. The procedure was very successful; Dr. Mah did an amazing job!” Rita’s transformation is another reminder to myself and my team about the importance and significance of what we do. We don’t work with teeth, we work with people. We work with you to increase your level of deservingness and it is extremely fulfilling. We know that you deserve more out of life and so should you. Thank you Rita for allowing us to honour our mission of “Enriching lives, one smile at a time.” We wish you all the best as you embark on your new journey as your bright new smile leads the way!

Top Wellness Trends
for Women in 2017 W
hen it comes to staying fit, feeling your best, and maintaining that gorgeous glow, where are your go-to resources for keeping up-to-date on the latest in health and wellness? The Wellness Show has been introducing the latest health trends for 25 years, and brings you this list of what’s next and exciting in the world of holistic wellness.
COLLAGEN This protein is the secret to glowing skin, long hair, and strong nails. It also helps those with joint inflammation like arthritis, and helps to heal your gut, resulting in higher immunity and better digestion. You can get it through a supplement, but many women are choosing to make their own bone broth; by boiling bones, vegetables and herbs on the back of the stove for a few hours, then drinking this bone broth a few times a day in the place of coffee or tea. You can also buy it pre-made from local sources, like PureBoneBroth.
REDUCEATARIANISM Concerned about the environmental impact of meat on the planet, many women are choosing diets that require less of it. Meatless Monday is a movement born out of this desire, as is “Vegetarian Before 4,” where people will choose vegan or vegetarian choices all day, but then have meat for dinner. A diet higher in vegetables is better for us, and better for the planet. To learn more attend Dr. Jason Marr’s talk “Your Health- An Evolutionary Perspective” and Dr. Albert Kim’s talk on the “7 Powerful Foods You Must Have on Your Dining Table” at the Wellness Show. Plus, check out the 8+ vegetarian and vegan cooking demos to get recipe ideas on both the Celebrity Cooking and Healthy Families Stages at this year’s Wellness Show.
PLANT-POWERED PROTEIN The more we move towards a plant-based diet, the more we need good, clean sources of protein. Hemp (check out Manitoba Harvest and Hemp Foods or Planet Hemp) and Pea Protein (Genuine Health’s “Vegan Proteins+” & Body Plus’s “Iron Vegan Sprouted Protein”) are two great sources. Add a scoop or two to your morning smoothie.
TECHIE MEDITATION Technology and Wellness have been hooking up for quite a few years now. Wearable technology that tracks our activity, sleep and calories and then analyzes it for us is nothing new. One exciting new option in wellness technology? Meditation apps like Headspace. We know that meditation is good for us—it helps relieve stress, and makes us more focused—these new apps help to schedule it in the same as you would your workout. Visit the new Bodhi Meditation Garden at this year’s Wellness Show to experience the positive effects of meditation first-hand.
B-COMPLEX As women, we often don’t get enough B-vitamins in our diet, especially if we are on a low-carb one. B-vitamins help with adrenal support and stress management, and can help prevent a type of anemia that will make you feel exhausted all the time. Take a good B-complex supplement like PureFood B from Pranin Organics, and try sprinkling Nutritional Yeast into your salads for a Vitamin-B boost.
WELLNESS VACATIONS AND ME TIME Taking vacations has always been important to our physical and mental health, but over the past few years, taking vacations that integrate wellness have become more and more popular. You can, for example, take a week-long program at the Chopra Wellness Center to “Restore Your Balance,” or experience the hydrotherapy at the KingFisher Oceanside Resort and Spa. If you can’t get out of town, make some “Me Time.” Book a floating session at your local Pure Float, or get the Ultimate Mobile Spa to come right to you for in-home pampering. We all strive to take the best possible care of ourselves. For many women, even in today’s world, we remain the primary caretakers in our families, and it is important that we carve out the time for self-care so that we can take care of others. Explore some new ways of self-care in 2017, and check out The Wellness Show, March 3-5, 2017 at the Vancouver Convention Centre for all the latest and greatest in Health and Wellness.

T
he word collagen is derived from the Greek word “kola” meaning glue. Collagen is a structural component that makes your bones strong, your tendons elastic and your skin smooth. When we are young collagen is produced in abundance and as we age collagen production declines. There are over 16 types of collagen in the body, but 90 percent of the collagen consists of types I, II, and III. When collagen production declines muscles and skin sags; bones lose density and strength; joints and ligaments become weaker and less elastic. Cartilage becomes thinner and weaker at the joints causing arthritis. Hair looses its thickness and wave and breaks easily. Organs may sag toward the floor (prolapse uterus and bladder), and sphincters weaken (incontinence). The heart enlarges. Arteries become less elastic, more prone to aneurysm and become less resistant to plaque formation. But where we notice the loss of collagen the most is in the skin with increased wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
COLLAGEN IN NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS There are many different sources of collagen in nutritional supplements and it can be confusing to know what type of collagen to use. Collagen Type II from chicken sternum is used for repairing joints in those suffering arthritis. Collagen from cow parts (hide, hooves, bones, skin and ligaments) is also available and marketed for beautiful skin.
54 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca
This type of collagen should be avoided. Cow collagen is produced from cow bones, skin/ hide, and connective tissue. Typically skin/ hide-sourced collagen Type 1 cow hides are put in a lime slurry pit for up to three months, loosening collagen bonds: the hides are then washed to remove lime and the collagen is extracted in boiling water. The extracted collagen is evaporated, concentrated, desiccated in drum driers and pulverized. No one wants to eat slaughterhouse waste and there is no research showing cow hide collagen has any affect in the body. When I was searching for a collagen product for myself for wrinkle reduction I looked at the clinical research. I chose a French activated collagen from hydrolyzed marine collagen and elastin polypeptides because of the excellent clinical research showing a reduction in deep wrinkles. This activated collagen is from wild fish, not farmed tilapia, and the fish from a sustainable source. As well the activated collagen contains hydrolyzed elastin as well which none of the other collagen product offer. Some companies are so embarrassed by their collagen source they don’t put it on the label. You want a collagen product that has clinical research, is activated, hydrolyzed polypeptides and contains elastin and is not from farmed fish— an environmental disaster. Health Canada reviews the research for all collagen products and provides a Natural Health Product license which states what the collagen can be sold for. Activated Collagen is the only product on the market today to
have a license for skin and with the approved label claim “for the reduction of the number and depth of deep wrinkles in 28 days” which is an amazing Health Canada claim. None of the other collagen products can state this as their products are not licensed for reducing deep wrinkles.
COLLAGEN AND SKIN Starting in our early 20s collagen production declines by about one percent a year. But women lose as much as 30 percent of their collagen in the five years following menopause which is the reason that we see bone loss, muscle decline, prolapsed uterus and bladder and skeletal aging in general. The effects of slowed collagen production are visibly obvious when skin loses its elasticity, sags and wrinkles. A second yet equally important component of skin is elastin. Elastin fibers form a matrix with collagen; together they allow the skin to flex and move. When we are young, the skin naturally renews its collagen and elastin. But with age and damaging sun burns this renewal rate slows down.
REDUCE DEEP WRINKLES IN 28 DAYS In a study of 43 women between the ages of 40 and 55 with deep crow’s feet wrinkles, consumption of an activated collagen containing hydrolyzed marine collagen

and elastin polypeptides was found to decrease lines and wrinkles as well as to increase skin moisture. Two grams per day of either activated collagen or fake pills were consumed for 84 days. Subjects’ forearm and face skin conditions were measured at day 0, day 28 and day 84. Day 28 through 84 were during winter months to simulate harsh winter conditions.
more collagen rebuilding occurs. Activated collagen also reduces the crepe-like skin we get on our eyelids and upper arms. Even vaginal dryness improved. You only have to take 2000mg of activated collagen. Other farmed tilapia fish collagen supplements require four times as much with no scientific evidence that they work.
After 28 days, the group taking the activated collagen showed a significant 20 percent decrease in the depth and the number of deep wrinkles in 71 percent of the subjects. The placebo group experienced an increase in the number of deep wrinkles.
VEGETARIANS CAN ENHANCE COLLAGEN TOO
Finally, activated collagen was found to have a powerful moisturizing effect on the skin and the longer you take it the
Collagen manufacture can be achieved by providing the body with the building blocks which include the nutrients biotin and orthosilicic acid. Research using a liquid combination of choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid and biotin have been found to build collagen in the hair, nails, bones and skin. In the hair this liquid combination
enhances keratin along with collagen to promote thicker, stronger, faster growing hair. Due to the keratin enhancement choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid and biotin makes your hair shinier and less prone to breakage. This combo also builds collagen in the fingernails and bones. A two percent increase in bone density over a one year period was seen in those consuming cholinestabilized orthosilicic acid. Vegetarians love this combination as these two ingredients aid the body in making collagen. Just ten drops a day in your smoothie, drink or food. Within 90 days you will notice a dramatic difference in your skin, hair and nails. Choose your collagen supplement wisely and you will be rewarded with beautiful, smooth skin, thicker hair and harder fingernails all while building strong bones.

She helps them find ways to multiply their revenue streams and take control of their financial futures so that they can enjoy life’s blessings. All too often, Michelle sees entrepreneurs who are blindly doing the same things and getting the same results. She helps them uncover their dreams, shine a light on their numbers, and shake things up. Michelle empowers women to pull back the curtain on their business and examine where they are now, decide where they want to be, and create a route to that place through the foundation of their business, the numbers. The journey can feel lonely, so she shows them how to build their business sisterhood through collaboration, not competition. Learn more abut Michelle at MichelleBCooper.com
