WHAT IS ROSACEA? Rosacea is a chronic skin condition affecting more than 2 million Canadian adults. It most commonly affects people between the ages of 30-50. Both men and women can be affected however, more cases are reported in women, and more severe cases are reported in men. It tends to affect people with fair skin of northern and eastern European descent however it can develop in a person of any skin type.
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? It’s characterized by redness affecting the chin, nose, cheeks and central forehead. In addition to the redness, dilated blood vessels become visible. Sometimes bumps and pimples form. Up to half of rosacea sufferers suffer from eye involvement (a gritty sensation in the eyes). A rare subtype of rosacea can lead to thick, swollen and bumpy skin on the nose called rhinophyma. Often patients with rosacea complain of very sensitive skin that burns and stings.
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS? Rosacea is something that Dermatologists treat every day and while there is no known cure, there are excellent tools to help manage this condition. The goals of treatment include: to create healthy skin that is not sensitive, stop any blemishes from forming and improve the overall appearance by decreasing redness and broken blood vessels.
Q&A WITH
Several lifestyle factors can cause rosacea to flare up. Some common triggers include: hot and cold weather extremes, UV exposure, alcohol, hot or spicy foods and drinks. It’s important to try and identify if you have any of these triggers and avoid them. To improve the pimples and bumps, your Dermatologist may prescribe topical creams, oral antibiotics or oral isotretinoin. To improve the redness and broken blood vessels, light based devices such as Intense Pulsed Lights (IPL) are commonly recommended. These treatments are very successful at decreasing the redness, removing broken blood vessels and strengthening the skin by making more collagen. The results are excellent leaving you with a more even skin tone. Multiple treatments are needed to reach the best results. An essential part of treatment for rosacea is skin care to improve the skin barrier, decrease sensitivity and protect the skin. Your Dermatologist can recommend a skin care regimen to help you feel great about your skin.
April was Rosacea Awareness Month and we’ve asked Dr. Allison Sutton, a Dermatologist in Vancouver, BC, to help us understand what rosacea is and how it can be treated. MAY/JUNE 2017

WINE & FLOWER PAIRINGS By LAUREN SABO OF BOTANY & CO.
Photos by PAGE & PAPER
S
pring is a season for entertaining, and two key elements at any gathering are wine and flowers. I’ve rounded up my top five tips on how to make your flowers and wine work together to elevate your spring celebrations. Cheers!
MATCH THE LABEL
CHILL WITH THE WINE
Keep your colour palette in mind by matching your party florals to the label on your bottle. The peach coloured label on Ruffino Prosecco, when matched with peachy tulips and roses, adds a pop of colour to spring celebrations.
Prepare your flowers and wine before the guests arrive to keep everything party ready. Tulips, peonies, and hyacinths make a beautiful centrepiece and bloom for longer when kept cool. Chill your peonies in the fridge alongside your favourite white wine, and keep your hyacinths away from direct sunlight to preserve the opening process for longer.
MATCH THE WINE
FOOD FIRST
TREAT THE HOST
Why not match the colour of your wine with your flowers? Use creamy yellows for whites, and for summer reds like Meiomi Pinot Noir pair with burgundy red charm peonies, to accent the deep colour of the wine.
Pinot Grigio is a popular choice for Spring since it pairs with favourite spring foods like halibut and shrimp, or cheeses like chevre and burrata. At a food-focused gathering, it’s best to choose scentless flowers, like seasonal ranunculus and anemones, to keep guests focused on the flavours of the wine and food.
If you’re not the one doing the entertaining, remember to bring a hostess gift. Chardonnay is one of the world’s most popular wine varietals, making it a great go-to for gifts. Complete the package with a sweet and simple bouquet as adaptable as the wine, opting for neutral and creamy spring florals like quicksand roses, mottled hellebores and cream lisianthus for a gift you can be sure any hostess will love.

xperience counts. And when it comes to acting, Emmanuelle Vaugier has a lot of it. Born in Vancouver to French immigrant parents, Vaugier has worked steadily for the past 23 years, building a resume that includes well-loved characters, such as Mia, Charlie Sheen’s ex-fiancee on the awardwinning CBS comedy Two and a Half Men, more prickly types, like Niko, a tough mixologist on Mistresses, ABC’s steamy summer soap and downright dangerous characters like The Morrigan on the innovative Canadian drama series, Lost Girl. In addition to her recurring television roles, she’s starred in madefor-TV movies, worked opposite names like Michael Caine, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Josh Hartnett in feature films and lent her likeness, movements and voice to video games. Pigeon-holed she is not. About a decade ago, Vaugier traded her Yaletown condo in rainy Vancouver for a house in sunny L.A. (she’s a self-professed “warm weather” person). Fresh Magazine caught up with her there after a busy weekend trip to Kansas City, where she appeared at Planet Comicon 2017 with fellow Canadians and Lost Girl co-stars Zoie Palmer, Rachel Skarsten, Anna Silk.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE CANADIAN? I love Canada and I’m very proud of my Canadian roots. Canada is where my friends and family are. I also spend a fair share of time in Canada working. I do have triple citizenship—Canadian, American,
MAY/JUNE 2017
and French. I’m happy to be an American citizen too. It gives me the right to vote and to have a say in the politics.
WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT VANCOUVER? I miss my friends. I miss the summers, because they’re so beautiful. I miss being able to ride. My horse trainer there is amazing and has several clients who let me ride and take lessons on their really wonderful horses. So anytime I’m in Vancouver, I’m pretty much at the barn.
WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE CANADIAN PLACES TO VISIT? I love Montreal, especially Old Montreal—when the weather’s really nice and not too, too hot. I love Toronto. I always enjoy my time there. A lot of the girlfriends that I grew up with and went to school with live there. I like Whistler, but only in the summer. If there’s snow, get me out of there!
WHERE ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO TRAVEL? One of my favourite regions is the Caribbean. I also love Cannes and St. Tropez in the south of France in the summertime. I don’t like a schedule. I like to relax, and enjoy, and sit on a nice patio and have a glass of wine. I like to walk around and go visit different little areas. The exception to that was a recent horseback riding trip I went on in Ireland. That was a two-hour ride in the morning, a riding lesson in the afternoon, rinse and repeat for ten days. I loved it! freshmag.ca | FRESH MAGAZINE | 17
DO YOU COLLECT ART? I wouldn’t call myself a collector, but I do love art. I tend to buy things slowly, waiting until I find pieces that I’m especially drawn to. Often, it’s when I’m travelling and something catches my eye at an outdoor market. I like popping into little, independent art galleries in L.A., but I also shop online a lot. I can do it from my kitchen table and see ten times the amount of art in a short time. After I narrow it down, I can go see the piece in person. I also have a really good friend who’s an amazing artist, so I may commission her to paint something.
“Sometimes the vision you had for a character changes completely as the day goes on... With acting, you go out, you do the best you can and you see where that takes you.”
WHAT STYLE OF ART ARE YOU MOST DRAWN TO? For a while I was very much into art that had a Japanese or Buddhist feel. My house has a Japanese Zen quality, warmed up with some mid-century modern furniture. I want it to be homey, but still look put together. One of the first pieces I ever bought, about 16 years ago, is a giant gold-leaf Buddha. I also have four-panel painting of Kyoto hanging in my bedroom. I still have a lot of wall space to fill. Right now, I’m mainly looking at photographic prints of animals, horses in the wild.
HAVE YOU HEARD OF ROBERTO DUTESCO, WHO PHOTOGRAPHS THE WILD HORSES ON SABLE ISLAND? Yes! I know exactly who you are talking about. His work is stunning! They print the photos on huge canvases. There was a furniture store in L.A. that was displaying some of his work in their window. It caught my eye as I was driving by and I immediately swerved to the curb and ran in. Unfortunately, the price was more on the scale of “this is something I have to think about and plan for” than the “I’ll take it right this second” range.
YOU FOUNDED STUDIO FREDERIQUE IN 2013. WHAT WAS THE GOAL THERE? Frederique is my middle name. I took up painting when one of my artist friends started inviting me to paint with her. We’d paint together and she’d teach me a bit and help me along. It was fun! Now, I have a whole closet full of brushes and oil paints and acrylics and canvases. Once I had a few finished pieces, I started selling canvas reproductions and auctioning the framed originals online to raise funds for my charity, The Fluffball. All the pieces have sold now and I haven’t had a chance to paint more because I’ve been so busy, so it’s on the backburner a bit.
DOES PAINTING COME FROM THE SAME CREATIVE PLACE AS ACTING? I think they both come from the same place of expression. It’s just expressing yourself through a different medium. I find painting more frustrating than acting though, because it’s newer to me. I get frustrated when I can’t make the piece look the way I want it to. My artist friend keeps telling me, “Painting is repainting. Don’t worry about screwing it up. You can paint over it.” The difference is, she has the tools and know-how to fix mistakes. When I try to correct something, it just turns into a big muddy mess.
18 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca
EDITING IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF WRITING TOO. IS IT THE SAME WITH ACTING? Yes, definitely. Sometimes the vision you had for a character changes completely as the day goes on. The person working opposite you makes choices that affect what you do. The director might have a different vision. It’s great, because incorporating everyone’s ideas is often what makes the performance shine. That process is far less frustrating for me than painting because I understand it more. I’ve done it so much that I know how to navigate it. With painting, it’s like, “that’s not the colour I wanted. It’s yellow and it’s supposed to be blue!”
The creative processes are similar too, because you need to start with something. With acting, you go out, you do the best you can and you see where that takes you. With film and TV, you can always change it later. New ideas can come up the more you rehearse too. By the end of a scene, we’ve often discovered new things. But you can kill an idea too—beat it to death until there’s nothing left. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution.
WHAT ACTING PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? I play Regan Faulkner, an Assistant District Attorney, on Rogue, a Canada/UK co-production now showing on Movie Network. I also have a couple of movies coming out later this year. Currently, I’m reading scripts and deciding what to do next.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM ROLE? I’d love to do more comedy. There are so many great comedians out there. I love Will Farrell, Jim Carey, Kristen Whig, Melissa McCarthy. Michael Caine cracks me up. He was brilliant in Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels. I’d also love to do an action series or an action movie. I love movies like Salt and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Really, I just like working. I feel so fortunate to have worked in such a variety of genres during my career. I’ve done everything from sci-fi to procedural to comedy to thriller and action. I haven’t been limited in any way.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH CARRIE FISHER ON CAROL, IT’S CHRISTMAS? It was wonderful. Carrie was a lot of fun and we really had a blast. She was a very, very funny lady. She had a dark, twisted sense of humour that’s right up my alley. I’m really proud to have worked with her. She was super talented and such a legend.
HOW DID YOUR CHARITY, THE FLUFFBALL, GET STARTED? I wanted to find a way to give back. I always knew it was going to be an animal-based charity, because that’s what I’m passionate about. The first three years, we worked with Best Friends Animal Society, a huge rescue organization. We threw an annual cocktail event, called The Fluffball, to raise funds for them. MAY/JUNE 2017
ABOVE: EMMANUELLE RIDING AT LESLIE CASTLE IN IRELAND
After that, I formed my own non-profit, still called The Fluffball. Essentially, it’s a platform to raise awareness and funds for smaller organizations that don’t have the support and voice that they’d like. We sell tickets, hold a silent auction. Since starting out, I think we’ve raised about $200,000. It’s as much about raising awareness as it is about raising money. We help spread the word, educate people about what’s happening in various places around the country and let the public know how they can help.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START RIDING?
We support a different charitable organization every couple of years. The last two years, we’ve donated the funds to The Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, which was founded by Marc Ching. It rescues dogs that have suffered extreme abuse, including at the hands of the Asian meat trade. For 2017, my goal is to help a local horse rescue. We’ve shortlisted a number of potential organizations, but haven’t picked one yet.
The weird thing was, my parents didn’t say one word. When I quit the piano, it was “you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.” The same thing for ballet. This time—nothing. Now that I’ve taken up riding again, I realize why. It’s basically like taking on a second mortgage. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, but now I finally understand why my parents were totally fine with me quitting riding.
YOU COMPETE ON A RESCUE HORSE, DON’T YOU?
WHAT DO YOU GET FROM RIDING THAT YOU DON’T GET ANYWHERE ELSE?
Yes, my trainer in L.A. has two rescue horses. They came from a situation of neglect, more than abuse. There was this group of horses with really great bloodlines in a back pasture somewhere. The owner had died and no-one was paying any attention to them. They were seven or eight years old and hadn’t been broken or under saddle. My trainer took two of the horses and started training them, and still has them both. I ride and compete on Rose. She’s a ThoroughbredHolsteiner cross, who is lovely and wonderful and sweet.
Peace of mind. When I’m at the barn, nothing else matters. I could be in the worst mood when I start a trail ride or lesson. By the end of it, I’ve forgotten why I was upset. I’m happier. I’m more relaxed. It switches my focus. It’s just about me and the horse and our connection. It has nothing to do with the business. It’s nice to be able to escape. Especially in L.A.—there is such a pace here. Some people meditate. This is my version of meditation.
MAY/JUNE 2017
I’ve always loved horses. I rode for two years when I was a kid. I begged my parents to let me do it until finally they said “Yes.” Every Sunday, my grandmother and I would take the bus down to Southlands, then walk down Marine Drive to the stables, usually in the pouring rain. There was no indoor arena where I was riding. Most of the time, I spent the whole day in the rain. It was pretty miserable. Finally, after two years, I gave up.

By ELIZABETH QUAYLE GET INSPIRED
I
t’s easy to get inspired. Watch an uplifting TED Talk. Read a great book. Feel the music deeply. But unless that momentary impulse becomes action, it’s meaningless. Natasha Koifman is a radically different kind of inspiring. That’s because, as President of NKPR— one of Canada’s ‘go to’ PR agencies—she spends her (long) days inspiring real change. She inspires clients like DAVIDsTEA and Swarovski to embrace the digital tools, brand-building ideas and innovative strategies that drive measurable business success. She inspires her team to create award-winning campaigns and then to find material ways to give back through NKPR’s 26 Acts of Kindness program. She’s inspired her industry to turn their talents toward philanthropic endeavours more often. She’s helped inspire to raise more than $30 million to Artists for Peace and Justice, which aids the people of Haiti. And now, to help celebrate NKPR’s 15-year anniversary, her goal is to inspire the people of Toronto to Share the Love. Recently, Natasha talked to Fresh Magazine about what’s inspired her over the years, including passion, fear, art, and the desire to leave the world a better place.
PASSION SPARKS SUCCESS I started NKPR in my basement. I didn’t think it was going to turn into a company. I just thought, I get to work on what I really love and that will make me happy. And it really brewed from that intent, because if you start with the intention that you’re only going to work on things you’re passionate about, then the business starts to come to you.
MAY/JUNE 2017
Early on, I received a call from CIBC. It was December 23rd and they needed to hold an important press conference on January 3rd. I remember thinking “I can’t just throw together a press conference for one of Canada’s biggest banks!” But I called back and said ‘Sure, I can do that!’ What it taught me was, when you’re most afraid that you can’t do something, is when you’ll put your absolute best foot forward. That was a turning point. Over the next year, CIBC gave us their entire sponsorship portfolio and NKPR became their agency of record. Had I said “no,” that never would have happened.
ART AS INSPIRATION My desk faces a beautiful piece of work by Peter Tunney. It’s a piece that says “Believe.” And I look at it every single day. I have a couple other pieces in my house by the same artist. The first big piece you see when you walk in says “Gratitude.” There’s one in my study that says “Love.” I love art that has words on it, because I feel like it’s a way for me to connect to that feeling. I also collect photography. I have a great Marilyn Monroe by Bert Stern, who shot photos of her six weeks before she died. I have some really cool photography from Roberto Dutesco, who is a Canadian photographer I discovered when I was in New York City. He was the only photographer able to shoot the wild horses of Sable Island. They’re spectacular pieces. I have one piece in my bedroom and another in my apartment in New York.

MAY/JUNE 2017
SHARING THE LOVE At NKPR, we’re committed to sharing our love of art and photography. We’ve been working with the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival for 12 years. It’s the largest photography festival in the world, where more than 250 photographers showcase their work across Toronto for the entire month of May. I love it because you’re exposing people to more and more art and giving them a chance to discover what they like. We’re also working with LandMarks 2017, which will see 11 contemporary art installations created all over Canada. The pieces will all have strong Indigenous themes and the idea is to use art to start conversations about our shared Canadian identity.
CAUSE AT THE CORE Cause is at the core of what we do. We started 26 Acts of Kindness a couple of years ago. When we launched the holiday campaign, our entire staff worked for 26 hours straight with 26 different charities to give back in ways that were meaningful to them. A year later, I noticed four or five other PR agencies finding ways to give back too. I loved it. It’s about setting an example. It’s about spreading the love. If they want to copy that, I’m all for it.
ARTISTS FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE I sit on the Board for Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ) US and I’m the Chair of the Board for APJ Canada. Paul Haggis founded the organization eight years ago. He had just come back from a trip to Haiti and wanted to help the people there. I helped create APJ’s first major fundraiser, where Paul and his now ex-wife invited all of their celebrity friends. People like Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Barbra Streisand, Pierce Brosnan, Javier Bardem. We had a room of 30 A-list celebrities, and most of them committed to giving $50,000 for the next five years. Very quickly after that, we bought land in Port au Prince, we built a free high school and enrolled our first 150 students. The goal is to help Haiti get back on its feet through the community helping its own community.
INSPIRING GOOD Inspiration comes in so many different forms. There’s an amazing street artist Hektad, who does heart-themed pieces all over New York City. For our 15th anniversary, we’re bringing him to Toronto to create an installation on our office windows, which will depict hearts, with the words ‘I choose love’. We want to inspire people to take pictures in front of the piece and then share them, so that they can help spread the love as well. Inspiration is really important. Paul Haggis inspired me. I inspired my team. We inspired our industry. That’s how good happens in the world. If every single person who was able to, could do one kind thing or support one cause that really mattered to them, the world would be a better place. PHOTOS BY KATHERINE HOLLAND

RS 2017! A C S O E H T R DY FO GETTING REA

othing like starting the year checking off one of my absolute bucket list dream come true experiences! When I was asked by the Founders of Preveceutical Health Sciences to join their team in LA for Elton John’s Oscars party, I couldn’t refuse. Then suddenly I thought: “what am I going to wear?” Of course, encouraged by my friends at CAFA it had to be all Canadian. To say “it takes a village” is an absolute understatement and I wanted to share the inspiration of the team that made my red-carpet dreams come true.
SORIES STEP 2: THE ACCES
THE NECKLACE “Custom pieces always start with a conversation with the client in which they share their ideas on the ‘look,’ the dress and neckline style, and event they will be attending. The challenge with the Oscar pieces was to make chokers which were a style I had not previously made. We took a very Alexander McQueen approach with clusters of butterflies wrapped around her neck. It was a stunning combination.” – Carolyn Bruce Designs Steampunk Jewelry, One-of-a-Kind Handmade Wearable Art for Men & Women CarolynBruceDesigns.com
THE BAG
STEP 1: THE DRESS
“The handmade clutch was the perfect size for Crystal to stow away her two phones and phone chargers that she can’t leave home without, while still maintaining red carpet elegance for the evening in Hollywood. Swarovski crystals on the band create a fashion design that complements dressy or casual looks with a touch of sophistication.” – Carlos Ramirez, Xixo Leather Artistry Boutique Xixo.ca
“The inspiration for the dress was ‘Old Hollywood.’ I’ve always been inspired by the drop-dead glamour of film noir. I like sex, champagne, nighttime in the city and women in high heels. I wanted this gown to embody all of these qualities.”
“The icing on the cake was the final touch— a bold crystal bracelet to complete her look.”

STEP 3: SKIN “We knew these photos would be forever so we wanted to give Crystal the Hollywood treatment without going too Hollywood as some would say! We combined Hydrafacial’s with NCTF135HA microinjection NCTF means New Cellular Treatment Factor. It is composed of 53 active ingredients 23 amino acids, 12 vitamins, 6 co-enzymes, 6 minerals, 5 nucleic acids, 1 anti-oxydant. + HA which stimulate the metabolism of skin cells. This gave Crystal a youthful glow under the spotlight for her trip.” – Ali Omrani WhiteOrchidRejuvenationCentre.ca
STEP 4: HAIR “I wanted Crystal to look like she was the natural born Cali girl with the perfect sun-kissed colour. I wanted a style that could go from sexy beach waves to a bombshell blowout, to an elegant Oscar red carpet. We added in BuyBeautyProducts.com hair extensions to take her hair over the top for Hollywood. Placement is key for hair extensions. You want to make sure that there is enough hair around your hairline left to cover the extensions when you flip your hair from side to side.” – Courtney Brand @hairbybrands BrushSalon.ca
STEP 5: MAKEUP “I was going for a soft smoky look that wouldn’t be too harsh on a blond with blue eyes. I used neutral shimmery tones from Makeup Forever and finished with individual lashes. Crystal drew her inspiration from J.Lo red carpet style and we executed it.” – Stephanie Navarro Los Angeles-Based Makeup Artist @beautiebystephanie StephanieNavarro.com

LISA
SHILAN
JOY
In Honour of Spring By DR. KELVIN P. MAH
Lisa
pring has finally sprung and, together, we celebrate resilience, beauty, and new beginnings. A lot of us are overly critical of ourselves and forget that true beauty emanates from within. It’s so defeating to feel that your smile is the last thing you want to reveal to people. A lack of self-confidence can be detrimental to both our personal and professional journey. I’ve been fortunate to be inspired by many people who have found themselves through their smiles and, in honour of spring and new beginnings, I’d like to share the stories of three remarkable women.
32 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca
Lisa is a winner in every sense of the word and we celebrate her resilience. We met because she had submitted to a contest we had run through Fresh Vancouver Magazine looking for a candidate for a dental transformation. Here’s an excerpt from her letter: “I have had to make do with what little dental work I can afford and my smile is nothing like what it used to be. I find myself avoiding the camera, smiling with closed lips, and my selfesteem is affected due to the look of my teeth. For several years I was involved in a very unhealthy lifestyle; however, I am so very grateful and proud to say I have just celebrated two years of being clean and sober! Having my smile fixed would mean the absolute world to me!”

Lisa shared her story of a life fraught with ups and downs. Transforming someone’s smile happens from the inside out. That being said, we addressed cosmetic and functional concerns to help with more personal issues.
thinking about it anymore. I am more confident and I get more compliments about my smile. I don’t have to think when I smile or laugh—I just smile!”
We started by brightening Lisa’s smile in a single visit by using Zoom Whitening and she was visibly overjoyed. We then used a special laser to reshape her gums around her upper front teeth because, if our teeth are artwork, then the gums are the frame surrounding them. By carefully modifying the “frame”, we dramatically enhanced Lisa’s smile. Lastly, we completed her treatment by closing the gaps between her front teeth using toothcoloured filling material.
Joy
As soon as she saw the results, we knew that something profound had taken place! Lisa is now on a path of reinvention and discovery, filled with the self-confidence only her smile could give.
Needless to say, beyond the cosmetic and functional procedures, we accomplished something more profound:
Shilan When I need motivation, I think of Shilan. Her story of strength and perseverance continues to inspire. “Ever since I was 13, I would stare at my face and teeth for hours in front of the mirror to see how I could fake a smile. I’ve always been hesitant to smile... it’s too gummy,” Shilan explained. At the time, Shilan had embarked on self-exploration to improve her confidence that included weight loss, healthier living choices and a full life makeover; however, she was still affected by her smile. “When I’m about to smile or laugh, I make sure to cover my mouth with my hands, scarf or just put my head down. In photos, I often look sad or serious,” she described. The psychological effects of a physical concern are profound and can create immeasurable stress and it’s my duty to alleviate such stresses to the best of my ability. I suggested she consider a minimallyinvasive gum reshaping procedure. This plan would be significantly more conservative and less expensive than the veneers she originally came in to see me for, while also eliminating the “gummy” appearance that was so clearly bothering her. After all of our long consultations, I knew she didn’t want to spend a fortune and wanted her smile simply enhanced. We completed the reshaping of her gums in under an hour, with no pain, or complications. “This has been bothering me since I was a little girl! You’ve given me my smile,” she proclaimed. “Now, I simply smile without
Finally, Joy is the personification of spring. In the beginning, Joy had resigned to never showing her smile and fell into a spiral of poor oral hygiene. It was sad to hear her say, “I was always aware of my imperfect front teeth and tried to compensate by not smiling when I really wanted to.” She had let her teeth go to such an extent that she couldn’t see how anything could be done.
“Firstly, I would have to say that my experience with Dr. Mah and his wonderful staff was absolutely amazing. My life has improved considerably since this experience. I smile more. I have greater confidence in my appearance. And I now feel that others look at me as a confident woman. I am a widow but have found a new relationship. There is love in my life! And this is due largely to my increased confidence and happiness... My outlook on life has improved immensely! I have found hope, passion, and love again thanks to my selfconfidence. I found freedom in my new look and became more attractive to myself and those around me. While I never felt bad about myself being a wife and mother with a successful career, now I’m able to be who I always wanted to be—100% me!” We are always humbled by the gratitude of our patients and are ecstatic that we were able to restore the happiness and confidence lost to poor oral hygiene habits and self-doubt. The experience of transforming Joy’s smile really highlighted for me the importance of what my team and I do—convey “possibility” and bring hope to otherwise overwhelming situations. When I see the end results of my patients, it’s not the teeth that I admire, it’s the vibrancy and excitement exuding from their new smiles. This goes far beyond treating cavities and broken teeth. If someone has been ashamed or unhappy with his or her appearance for years, the thought of ever changing feels utterly impossible—patience and trust are paramount. Transforming a smile is unlocking someone’s full potential. As we celebrate spring, let us celebrate that true beauty resides in resilience, strength and self-actualization. As I constantly remind my team: “We’re not treating teeth, we’re treating people.”
Dr. Kelvin P. Mah believes in helping people—not merely treating problems—and takes a dedicated interest in the health and wellness of each individual patient. #onpoint MICROBLADING AND PERMANENT MAKEUP EXPLAINED
By BACKLASH ACADEMY
H
ow do the celebrities look so fantastic even when it appears they have no makeup on? Here’s a little industry secret. Permanent makeup.
Permanent makeup, or cosmetic tattooing, is a fast-growing part of the health and beauty industry. The specialized techniques used for permanent cosmetics are often referred to as “micropigmentation”, “micropigment implantation”. The cosmetic implantation technique deposits coloured pigment into the upper reticular layer of the dermis.
K AT T E R A N I S H I Permanent Makeup Specialist Derma Clinic
Microblading is great for a very natural enhancement of the brows. It looks just like hairstrokes! This procedure is traditionally done with a manual blade consisting of anywhere from nine to 18 needles. The technician will very gently implant each stroke by hand, depositing the colour right below the surface of the skin. This procedure can last up to two years. Cosmetic tattoo eyebrows are typically done with a machine and a very fine point needle. Some artists call this the “Ombre Brow” or the “Powder Brow”. This is a great look for a more dramatic brow. This procedure can last for one to three years and typically lasts longer than microblading due to the method of implantation. A lip tattoo can reduce “lipstick bleed,” and give definition to the lip line. Permanent lipstick will give the desired look of dimensional lips, add fullness, balance crooked or uneven lips, and even minimize the appearance of wrinkles around the lips. After an eyeliner tattoo, eye pencils can be put away for several years. With an Eyelash Enhancement (a dark line between the lash hairs) eyes will look defined and awake all day and night. #wakeupmadeup Freckle envy? The latest trend is freckle tattooing across the nose and cheekbones. Cosmetic tattooing also has more serious applications, such as improving the appearance of a nipple after breast reconstruction.

Find a great technician and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. Ask where they went to school? And then research the school. Do they use all disposable instruments? Can they provide plenty of before and after photos including healed photos? Proper sterilization, techniques, and ensuring proper training is key.
