Retinaldehyde Stimulate Your Collagen While You Sleep By AMANDA BEISEL
A
pplying one simple ingredient every night before bed will literally stimulate your collagen while you sleep. This ingredient is Vitamin A, the leader in anti-aging for many decades and for good reason. It has been clinically proven to stimulate collagen, regulate healthy cell turnover which means your skin will look fresh and healthy. There is no other skincare ingredient that can turn back the hands of time the way Vitamin A can. Not all forms of Vitamin A are created equal and this is really important to understand if you main goal is to be stimulating collagen. Some forms of Vitamin A provide benefits to your bodily health and others to your skin health. There are three main forms of Vitamin A that have anti-aging benefits for the skin: Retinoic acid, Retinol, and Retinaldehyde. Among these three forms, one stands out as the most superior: Retinaldehyde. Retinaldehyde is relatively new to the skincare industry at least not as well known. Only a handful of skincare companies currently formulate with Retinaldehyde and this is due to its high cost. However, that is about to change and I predict in the next 12+ months Retinaldehyde will be the must-have anti-aging.
The 3 Forms of Vitamin A and How they Work Retinoic Acid: Prescription Vitamin A Many decades ago the first form of Vitamin A to hit the market was Tretinoin commonly know under the brand name Retin-A. This is a prescription form of Vitamin A that you can only get from your doctor. Other common retinoids doctors prescribe are Adapalene, and Tazarotene. All these prescriptions are the final form of Vitamin A called Retinoic Acid. There is no denying that these retinoids can be effective for some people but the downside is the all too common side effects of irritation, redness and peeling. In fact you can no longer get a prescription for Retin-A in the UK. Retinol: Most Common Over the Counter Vitamin A Retinol is the over the counter form of Vitamin A that the majority of skin care lines use in their products. Retinol comes in varying percentages and the main goal with Retinol is formulating with a high enough
concentration to be effective without being irritating. There is the misconception that the higher concentrations of Retinol make it more superior when in fact it is only making it more irritating. The percentage of the ingredient doesn’t matter as much as the form of the Vitamin A applied to the skin. Encapsulated Retinaldehyde: The Superior Form of Vitamin A A few years back, a team of chemists in the US worked really hard to revolutionize the way we use Vitamin A by creating a form that was less irritating than the prescription form known as Retinoic Acid. After being told this would be impossible, they proved the experts wrong and created Iconic A Encapsulated Retinaldehyde. Encapsulated Retinaldehyde is a potent yet non-irritating form of Vitamin A that can be stored in the skin and converted as needed which means no irritation, redness and peeling occurs. Iconic A Encapsulated Retinaldehyde produces collagen, improves the skin’s texture, reduces discoloration, and reduces the appearance of fine lines, and wrinkles.

rying a new cream can be a little like peering into a Magic 8 ball—the outlook unclear and uncertain. Yet, most of us religiously apply anything we believe may help keep our skin looking good, from antioxidants, magical ingredients such as glycolic acids and Retin-As... the list goes on and on. We are persuaded by promises of a skin-transforming miracle, until our bathrooms are cluttered with jars, tubes and bottles. We hardly even remember what we are putting on our faces, much less why. Spending our hard-earned money on products and treatments hoping for the best may soon be passé. Spa’s are launching services that allow you to swab your cheek, and send off your DNA for analysis, receiving back a report detailing your skin’s potential pitfalls. This allows you to completely personalize your skin care products and professional spa treatments. The human genome was mapped in 2003 and since then researchers have been busy uncovering ways in which we can benefit from this new knowledge. Consumers are getting into the act of taking at-home tests, like the ones from 23andMe or SkinDNA that look at all or part of one’s genome and reveal any variations. We each have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Each chromosome holds bundles of DNA, which contains genes passed down from parents and holds potential keys to everything from your hair colour to your risks of certain health problems. Within the DNA, there are many types of genetic variants, including one called a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP). There are 10 million SNPs in the human genome, and some have been found to predict risks of health conditions or have a regulatory effect on a gene function. So by swabbing your cheek, you can, in theory, discover what the future holds for your skin. One company, SkinDNA offers a $399 test that assesses 16 SNPs. SNPs pertain specifically to five skin health factors: firmness and elasticity, wrinkles (age), sun-damage and pigmentation, free radical damage, and sensitivity and inflammation. These SNPs are well established and by analyzing them, your service provider can tell you if you are at a high, medium, or low risk in each category. Sound to good to be true? Those of us that have actually struggled with problem skin, whether it be aging signs, acne, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, or dark spots, there is a never-ending search for the perfect skincare regime. Don’t you wish there was someone that could tell you precisely what products and professional treatments are optimal for your skin, so you could stop throwing away money on things that don’t work? Well, your wish may be granted sooner than you think. Search out the spas that offer this service before you think about buying any more goop in a jar!

Q & A W I T h R A C H E L T H E X T O N o f T hexton P R PR is about telling stories. How do you tell yours? I’ve done two things with my storytelling style. First, I have made sure there is a strong visual component. There is such “data overload” online and beyond. Visuals are key in attracting and retaining attention and showing the emotional side of the story, which is what people care about most. Secondly, I have my senior leading clients tell their story. People don’t always want to hear from the marketing executive. They want transparency. They want the face and voice behind the business. The community cares!
What is it about the PR industry that you connect with? When I studied Journalism, I felt too much empathy for my sources. This made it difficult to present a balanced story. I wanted to bring out the best in people and companies; to look at their story and present their challenges, what they had done right and how they planned to fix a mistake. I wanted to present humans as flawed yet amazing. Journalism was too factual for my sensitive heart. That said, I have a great amount of respect for the hard work journalists do. It’s key to accountability in society.
What are your strategies for success? Be kind. The media and blogger relationships I value dearly are borne of kindness and understanding on both sides. Treat everyone with respect. I don’t have “staff ”; I have “colleagues”. Remember that not every consumer or audience member is you. I am a 35-year old with certain points of view. We need diverse PR teams for true success in Canada’s diverse cities; teams with an understanding of local cultures, language skills and the ability to say: “Wait Rachel! As a Chinese male, that event or story idea sounds ignorant or boring”.
What’s the greatest professional challenge you’ve overcome? Demonstrating that the blond at the boardroom table could speak up with
authority and have ideas worth considering. Boardrooms are often filled with middle-aged white males. We need diversity at boardroom tables. Until then, speak up with confidence.
Do you have advice for women entering PR? It can be tough. Make both digital and traditional a part of your focus. Learn a fantastic relevant skill such as another language, SEO type skills, or videography. Expand on what you know.
Tell us about a recent success. Learning to take care of myself while managing a busy business. For a long time, work came first and the hours were endless. I was unhealthy and unhappy. I now have balance. This includes regular exercise, therapy, more travel, and taking mini-breaks to read or nap.
What’s the funniest thing that ever happened at work? When I interned at a Toronto agency called Media Profile, I wore the “Legally Blond” Elle Woods costume (dog and all) for media appearances to promote the film. I actually thought that may be how my PR career might be! I was wrong.
What is your biggest challenge working in PR? Wanting to spend more time telling stories for those who don’t have a voice or a budget for PR. I dedicate about 10% of our time to volunteer PR. Having communications skills means I will always be able to help others tell their stories and create change. Change starts with awareness and this often starts with a story! Several of our clients are doing awesome things. I love being a part of that! These include: • • • • • •

all is well under way, but that doesn’t mean we have to leave the bright hues of summer behind us. Anna Riese of La Biosthetique Canada teams up with photographer Matthew Chen to show us some serious colour inspiration for the new season. Anna tells us more about the creative concept behind this colourful editorial and how you can bring a pop of colour into your every day makeup.
WHAT WAS YOUR CREATIVE VISION FOR COLOUR SPLASH? The idea behind this shoot was to explore and break the boundaries of colour. I wanted to experiment with blending completely opposite colours with each other—red with green, blue with yellow—to create fun yet intense works of art.
20 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? I am always inspired by nature. I collect leaves, and I find it fascinating when they change colours in the fall. My vision was to capture the vibrant transitions that we see in nature with makeup—summer to fall, day to night. I also take inspiration from art and fashion magazines like iD, Numero, and M Magazine. I love how over-the-top and avant garde the editorials are. It’s not what you see in everyday beauty.
HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHICH COLOURS TO USE? For this shoot, my goal was to experiment, so I just opened up my palette and went for it!
However, how you play with colour does depend on skin tone, eye colour, and eye shape. For deep set eyes, my technique was focused on playing up the structure of her eyes with the strokes. For flatter lids, there was a lot more space to work with, so I wanted to show more blending with the colours.
WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR BRINGING A SPLASH OF COLOUR TO AN EVERYDAY MAKEUP LOOK? If you want to use a bold colour for everyday makeup, the key is to keep it simple. Choose one colour—say, Caribbean blue—and emphasize that colour instead of mixing different tones and colours. My favourite way to add intense colour without going over the top is to use a bold eyeliner or mascara.

W
ho among us is not familiar with the exquisitely haunting ballads of Sarah McLachlan? Her angelic singing voice, laying bare all the strength of raw emotion, has been the soundtrack of so many of our break-ups, road trips, quiet moments—and the occasional rocking concert. This fresh-faced Canadian icon has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and is the recipient of ten Juno Awards (nominated for a whopping 27), three Grammy Awards, three honorary degrees, and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement. She was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, the highest honour a Canadian citizen can receive.
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016
Some might call McLachlan something of an activist. Her unprecedented promotion of women in music through the allfemale Lilith Fair concert tours in the late 1990s created a new and widely acknowledged precedent of women’s empowerment in the entertainment industry and raised over $7 million for local and national women’s charities during its three-year run. She helped raise $30 million for the ASPCA by singing her heartbreaking song “Angel” in a television commercial depicting shelter animals. She founded the Sarah McLachlan School of Music as a free program for underprivileged and at-risk youth.

“It’s a rather isolated, lonely endeavour to write. To put something out there, and have a stranger say you helped me with what you created—that’s a beautiful thing.”

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016
B
ut for all her superstar status and impactful initiatives, McLachlan seems primarily concerned with telling us how she feels, humbly and without artifice. And that, quite simply, is the power of Sarah McLachlan.
Fresh Magazine was honoured to chat with the lovely Sarah McLachlan about her newly released Christmas album and the “not break-up album” she’s currently working on (the lead single inspired by a recent split from former NHLer Geoff Courtnall), as well as motherhood, the importance of feminism, and feeling great at forty-eight.
The Universal Appeal of Sarah McLachlan “I write about the human condition, from an emotional point of view, and I think that’s why my music is relatable. It’s extremely cathartic to have a process by which I can figure out all the stuff I’m going through. I write about love and loss and the afflictions we all suffer from—common themes that I’m endlessly fascinated by.”
The Public Side of Vulnerability “When I was younger, I was quite concerned with editing myself and veiling things. Today, I feel a lot freer to express exactly how I feel, and to show my vulnerabilities and insecurities. I feel like I have a responsibility to be as transparent and honest as I can be in my music. I think many people look at my life and assume that it’s perfect, and I’m so lucky. And I absolutely agree that I’m incredibly lucky, really blessed, and I love my life. But I still go through the same things that a lot of people go through. I’ve suffered loss—I lost both my parents to cancer, which was really difficult to watch them go through. I’ve gone through a divorce. But I have two beautiful, healthy children, and I’m blessed with a lot.”
The Meaning of Music “I love it when people come up to me and say: you helped me so much with that song because I felt the exact same way, and by giving my feelings a voice, you helped me heal and move forward. That’s the most amazing validation one can have as an artist. It’s a rather isolated, lonely endeavour to write. To put something out there, and have a stranger say you helped me with what you created—that’s a beautiful thing. To me, it is exactly what the gift of music is about: the ability to share our inner world and connect with each other on a deep and empathetic level as human beings.”
Sex and Feminism “In the entertainment industry, there is a need to sell people individually. The easiest, cheapest and most effective way to do that is through sexuality. Men get sexualized as well, but I think the pressure is immense for women to sexualize themselves in order to rise above the fray. The Kim Kardashians of the world posing nude and screaming about feminism—there’s a mixed message! Our young daughters are bombarded with overt sexuality. I talk to my daughters about it a lot. We need to teach our children that there’s a bigger machine working behind all this—a manipulation of sorts. But there’s also an important juxtaposition with people like Hillary Clinton. Love her or hate her, here’s a woman in a position of immense power, and we are starting to see more and more women in positions like that—which I think is amazing for our daughters to see.” NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016
Protecting Our Progress “I believe that women—and men—have to remain vigilant. Roe vs Wade, for instance, could change at a moment’s notice, and women could lose their ability to choose. Same-sex marriages could be abolished. It’s actually very simple for us to take a huge step backwards, if we’re not careful. It’s important to recognize the work that’s been done and not be complacent. My generation winds up sounding nagging to our daughters, because they don’t know it’s ever been any different. They don’t know that they were born into the best time in the world—ever—for women. It’s getting better, and I think a big part of it is women of our generation having sons, and teaching them respect and compassion, giving them an EQ. But that change is slow.”
Something’s Gotta Give “I was incredibly lucky that I was able to take time off when my daughters were born. I could afford to take time off and be a stay-athome mom, which is a great luxury. That said, I knew the longer I was out of the game, the more work it would take to get back into it. It was a conscious decision: I decided motherhood was more important to me. Maybe my career suffered. It probably did—I probably went away so long that I lost fans. But the things I gained were so important. “Everybody talks about trying to find a life-work balance. There’s no such thing! The ridiculous concept that women can ‘have it all’ is the biggest crock of shit I’ve ever heard. As women and mothers, we rarely cut ourselves much slack, and it’s a huge pressure to strive to ‘have it all.’ Something’s gotta give! I think it comes down to what you want to achieve, and how you want to achieve it. But I know I am not the normal working mother. I love what I do and would do it for free—actually I do quite often—but I get paid well, and it allows me a lot of freedom.”
The Spark of Inspiration “It’s hard to say where inspiration comes from—it’s sort of a fleeting moment that comes through me. Part of it is the discipline of sitting down every day and seeing if anything comes. For the most part, when I’m faced with something that feels like it needs to be put into some sort of perspective, I’m able to do that through writing. But I have to be still, for a while, before I can focus on whatever storm is happening. The older I get, the more ADHD I get! So I go into the woods by myself every day, and that’s my walking meditation. I hike and I write lyrics. I need that calm, with nothing else happening, to be able to focus.”
Wonderland “My new album, Wonderland, is a Christmas album. I love Christmas—I love everything about it. It’s a time when we all get together as family and friends, and just pause and enjoy each other. And sing, which is such an important part of my life! I love the carolling. My girlfriends and kids and I go to the Christmas train here in Vancouver every year, and I bring my sheet music and we try to get everyone in the lineups singing with us. It’s just fun.”
freshmag.ca | FRESH MAGAZINE | 27
Saying Goodbye and Making Progress “I’ll definitely be putting out another record. I plan to write next year and hope to have it out in 2018. [The Long Goodbye] is the first song, but I hope it’s not just a breakup album! I hope to create something bigger than that. I work hard at instilling hope, especially in songs like that, which speak to a pretty sad subject matter about loss and letting go. There’s still so much beauty in the world and so much more to be part of. I’ve got four or five other songs in process right now, but it’s too early to tell what they’re really about.”
The Sarah McLachlan School of Music “We’ve been running the Sarah McLachlan School of Music for fifteen years now, and I absolutely love it. It’s completely free for at-risk and under-served kids. We do rely 100 percent on donations from individuals and organizations. If anybody is interested in donating, they can go to SarahSchoolOfMusic.com.”
Feeling Beautiful “I think all of us are at our most beautiful when we’re feeling at peace and happy, and like we’ve achieved something. I did the Grouse Grind [hiking trail] the other day in 49 minutes and 30 seconds, and I felt pretty beautiful at the top—red face and all! “Before age 30 I was very sedentary. I sat on my ass, played piano and drew pictures. But around that age I realized that if I wanted to continue to eat like a horse I was going to have to exercise! It’s become a bit addictive—I recognize how much I need to be outside, rain or shine. I love any kind of exercise where you don’t even know you’re exercising—hiking, swimming, surfing, riding my bike. I don’t particularly like being in the gym, although I do it twice a week when I’m home. It feels really good to be strong. I’m going to be 49 in January and I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life.”
Feeling Healthy “I don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do drugs. I get a ton of sleep. I eat really clean—a lot of vegetables, a lot of lean protein, not a ton of carbs. But I have chocolate every day. I love full-fat everything: I eat an avocado every day and I make my own granola with lots of nuts and seeds in it. “I watched a dear friend of mine pass away in June at age 47 from colon cancer, and it really made me aware of what I choose to put in my body. My kids are getting on board now. I make a big salad for them twice a week for school lunches and they gobble it up. We talk a lot about putting good things in our bodies—your body is your temple!”
Confronting Fifty “I had my day in the sun and I loved every moment of it, and I’m still reaping the benefits of it: I still get to play music live and still have a vibrant, healthy career, which I’m really thankful for. At almost 49, I’m happy and healthy and my kids are thriving. I’m so happy where I’m at; I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” _______________________________________________________ Liberty Craig is a freelance writer and editor living and working in Vancouver.

one of us planned it, but it could not have been more perfectly orchestrated. The three of us journeyed through the city on our career-driven paths only to find out shortly one after another that we were all pregnant! It is at times like these where I cannot deny the divine mapping of the universe. From jet-setting and PR events to placenta pills, strollers and breast pumps: Kamila, Julia and I had no clue what was happening to our minds and our bodies. We found ourselves coming together in the name of community to nourish this unique bond we now had with each other. We needed this group-like mentality and whole bunch of creativity. After all, pregnancy is a time of pure creation; a process of complete transformation of self. Though one of the most magical times in a woman’s life, creating a human being can also be one of the most isolating and scary times where a community of fellow destinyseekers is much appreciated and needed! The city’s busyness and segregation was taking on a new meaning, and it was inducing extreme feelings of separateness; like I was no longer understandable after becoming pregnant. Women sticking together and forming a tribe has never felt so meaningful than during the nine-month journey. Together we revealed new ways of finding our authenticity though constantly undergoing change as our bellies grew. Together we empowered one another to be real, RAW, naked and sexy. We had nothing to hide and nothing to fear; revealing a new layer of US, the old with the new. Together we faced the unknown future with courage and boldness. The way it is supposed to be.
Urban Tribe Tips Sharing is Caring
We all know women love to talk! Put down your phones and get to it! Feel the words, share them, listen and receive. This is so important. It is important to let go of all judgments. This place of fear only holds us back, and although everyone may have their own way of doing things it is not the only way. When we release judgment, we create doorways to build meaningful sustainable relationships for the long run. Get comfortable being uncomfortable
With bellies the size of basketballs, swollen ankles and hot-flash moments, the last thing we wanted to do was a photo shoot. Solution: a sexy photo shoot. Embrace the unknown to get out of your comfort zone. The support of your tribe will make you thrive. Embrace being vulnerable and make it your strength. Laugh
Nothing binds people together like a roaring belly laugh. Not only can it strengthen your relationships there are also many health benefits to the giggles. It can boost your immune system and protect your heart while relaxing your entire body and being. Girl tribe, lady bosses, community—whatever you want to call it— women have the opportunity to band together through common experiences. It is in our creations, elations, triumphs, and tragedies where we unite. Find your people. Love them hard.

EVENT RECAP
T
his past October, the 8th Annual Beautylicious returned to Toronto’s most iconic neighbourhood of luxury and style, Bloor-Yorkville. From October 20th to October 30th, the event offered prix-fixe beauty deals at participating salons, spas and wellness centres in the Yorkville area. Women and men from all over the GTA return to this event each year to experience a variety of services available for a limited time only.
As the only event of its kind in Canada presented by the Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Area, Beautylicious offers special deals from over 50 participating businesses in the area. Widely recognized as the epicentre of Toronto’s beauty and wellness industry, and with the most spas per capita in Canada, it’s no wonder why BloorYorkville is host to this special yearly event. From independently-owned businesses such as Blyss Salon to beauty powerhouses like Stillwater Spa located inside the Park Hyatt Hotel, businesses see a tremendous growth in bookings during the week as well as a surge in new clientele post-event.
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016
One of the most sought after services this year included Stillwater’s Orange Spice Pumpkin & Polish Pedicure, where guests were pampered with nectar whole milk that softens and hydrates tired feet. Then, a custom blend of spicy organic pumpkin puree, nutrient-rich mud and whipped honey sea salt exfoliates the feet, leaving guests feeling invigorated. The pedicure finishes off with a honeysuckle orange cream custard massage leaving guests glowing on their way out. Another popular service that was available at this year’s Beautylicious was the $75 offer at Blyss Salon for either a colour, treatment and blow-dry or a cut and style with a senior stylist. Blyss Salon is home to a close-knit team of hand-picked expert hair stylists and colour technicians and a winner of the prestigious Canadian Salon Team Award. This year, OxyBeauty Medical Aesthetics Clinic offered their Jet Peel Wrinkle Reduction and Skin Rejuvenation for $75, a treatment that exfoliates skin by painlessly removing a dead layer of skin cells and then
hydrating it through a gentle moisturizing jet stream that cools and comforts the skin. This rejuvenates and oxygenates skin by infusing oxygen and then recharging and revitalizing skin cells. The treatment ultimately improves skin texture, tone and colour for face, neck and décolleté and provides the skin with vitamins and supplements. Beautylicious is perfect for anybody who wants to experience a range of hair, spa, skin, health and wellness from a top tier salon or spa at a fraction of the cost! This year, Celebrity Hairstylist Greg May and owner of Greg May Architects offered a Haircut & Finish and an Aroma Free Gloss, normally valued at $275 for only $125. By taking advantage of the deals Beautylicious has to offer, it means you get more beauty for less. Did you get a chance to score a #Beautylicious16 deal? Don’t worry too much if you missed the beauty boat. Of course, there’s always next year…

id you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body? Your skin is much more than an outer surface for the world to see. It protects you from bacteria, dirt, and the UV rays of the sun, contains nerve endings that let you know if something is hot or cold, soft or hard, sharp or dull. Your skin also plays an important role in regulating body’s fluids and temperatures.
Omega-3s will also help to nourish the hair follicles for healthier, stronger and shinier hair while decreasing a dry and flaky scalp.
Healthy skin mirrors a healthy body. Most of us will spend an exorbitant amount of money on creams, lotions and potions formulated to give us smoother younger-looking skin. But the fact remains, if your body is ill or malnourished, lacking in antioxidants, an imbalance in the gastrointestinal tract, or deficient in healthy fats, there isn’t a product out there that will help give your skin the glow, look and feel you desire. Eating a nutritious diet rich in plants, high quality proteins, healthy fats, and of course drinking lots of water (with a squeeze of lemon) is so important.
Astaxanthin
Healthy Fats for Healthy Skin The omega-3 fats found in cold-water fatty fish such as sardines, anchovies, mackerel, tuna, and salmon—as well as nuts and seeds like walnuts, almonds, hemp, chia, flax, olives, and coconut oil—are especially needed for moisturizing skin, preventing aging, decreasing wrinkles, treating acne, and protecting the skin from sunburn. These delicious fats help to strengthen the skin and hold onto the moisture that helps it look plump, healthy and well-hydrated. Along with a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3s will act as a natural moisturizer from the inside out, reducing water loss through the skin and improving overall hydration and moisture retention. Because the cell membrane is what influences the cells ability to hold water, having a cell membrane structure rich in omega-3s will yield moister, softer, and wrinkle-free skin. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce the body’s production of inflammatory compounds—natural chemicals involved in the aging process, that affect how healthy the skin looks and feels. Omega-3s effectively help to reduce overall inflammation of the facial skin and the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and sun damage.
For overall gorgeous skin, shiny, lustrous hair and strong nails, omega-3s are your go-to beauty nutrient.
Astaxanthin is a natural-occurring carotenoid found in microalgae and is one of the most studied and powerful antioxidants available today—65 times more powerful than vitamin C. It is the antioxidant you can see with its beautiful bright red color which has demonstrated the ability to protect cells from oxidation and inflammation. When salmon and shellfish such as crab, lobster, shrimp, and krill eat an algae rich diet, it turns their bodies bright red with its rich astaxanthin content. Astaxanthin is a protective nutrient and helps repair damage to joints, muscles, heart, inflammation, cells and skin. Research in the area of anti-aging, reducing UVA damage, and sun-screen protection shows promise with astaxanthin. The best way to get more astaxanthin in your diet is to supplement with 4mg per day in addition to eating more salmon and shellfish.
Superfoods for your Skin As the saying goes, you are what you eat, and in order to achieve optimal health, beautiful glowing skin, energy and the best quality of life, your diet needs to be reflective of the nutrients that help achieve this. There are many foods that are beneficial for achieving gorgeous skin. In addition to the healthy fats mentioned above, try to include these each day: • • • • •
Spinach Berries Tomatoes Sweet potato Green tea
• • • • •
Dark cacao Ginger Quinoa Turmeric Lemon

couldn’t help but want to cue Flo Rida when I made my selects for this season’s boots and coats. It’s all about the stretch over the knee boot. HOW TO
ROCK THE NEW PERM
I
loved my spiral perm growing up in the 80s and 90s. It was everything to me. As an adult, I truly thought perms were a thing of the past, buried with my teen memories and undeveloped film rolls. However, I’m happy to say that the rumours are true: the perm is making a comeback!
The new perm is all about options. You can have whatever kind of crazy curl you’re lusting after. Your perm curls can be huge and wavy or tiny spirals, and you have the option of creating multi-directional curl settings. Much like everything else in my life, I am not currently willing to commit to a perm. But I did want to try rocking the look in a “Sex in the City Sarah Jessica Parker” kind of way. So I took this look for a test drive with one of my favourite stylists: Curtis Hunter, Senior Stylist at Moods Hair Salon. The gorgeous full curls I tried out at the salon can be recreated at home with just a small barrel curling iron, a little bit of product, and your favourite retro music playing in the background!

STEP 1 Spray Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hairspray on towel-dried hair, from roots to ends. Flip your head over and blow dry the product into your hair.
STEP 2 Grab a small barrel curling iron and start wrapping small sections of hair around the iron. Spray your sections with Bumble & Bumble Spray de Mode for more holding power. Pin the curls in place and allow them to set. Make sure to alternate directions to create a more tousled end result!
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016
STEP 3 After the curls have cooled, remove the pins and shake the curls loose! Add some Bumble & Bumble Pret-a-Powder dry shampoo to the roots for texture. Spray some Bumble & Bumble City Swept on the ends for a more lived-in look.
STEP 4 Rock those curls! Shake, move and tousle them— the more undone the better!

How to Achieve a Truly Timeless Smile By Dr. Kelvin P. Mah
he leaves have changed and school is in full swing. While some of us may have a little less hair and others a little more waistline, we were all once teenagers ready to take over the world. High school is always a touchy time in our lives and I personally think that things haven’t really changed. We may look back at old yearbooks and cringe at the style, laugh at the quotes, or wonder— whatever happened to those people in the pictures?

There was the class clown with the atrocious cowlick. He was hilarious. There was the quiet nerd who was always hiding behind a textbook. He was cool... If it weren’t for divine intervention and fortuitous seating, I’d never know his name—or biology notes. And who can forget the homecoming king and queen... curse them and their perfect smiles. The voting was rigged! If we could only go back...
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016
Maybe we’re not so far off. Is the boardroom so different than the cafeteria? Is dating in your 40s so different than dating in your teens? Being too self-conscious to speak, to smile, or to socialize tends to haunt us no matter where we find ourselves in life. Our smile is our time capsule. It’s where we keep all the laughter, all the joy, and all the memories that have taken us to that very moment. A smile is more than an expression. More than emotion. It’s you. That’s why as a dentist, I pride myself in treating the person not the patient. I’m here to listen to your story, and work with you to achieve the perfect smile. It’s not about a single procedure but a process. I’m on a personal crusade to go back in time and make things right.
but your nerves have you munching away. Then, as soon as the bell sounds, you march toward her locker. You stop. It’s her. Crap. Your hands are clammy and you don’t know quite how to stand. You hear a jarring screech and forget why you’re there. But then you realize, that hideous sound is your voice. You’re talking to her! Whatever’s happening isn’t happening the way you thought it would. While your words stumble forward, her attention retreats to every person in the school but you. Your river of certainty is reduced to a trickle of sweat rolling down your face. She mercifully says she’s busy and excuses herself. As you curse the heavens, you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror and see what she saw... your teeth are stained blue!
Our smile is our time capsule... A smile is more than an expression. More than emotion. It’s you. Let’s go back to the first day of high school. Remember how terrifying it was. You feel small, insignificant, and alone. The last thing you want to do is open your mouth. Surely they’d notice your crooked tooth or hear the way you speak because of your overbite. As if things couldn’t get any worse, the only solution you’re given to correct your smile is braces... Now, let’s fast forward back to today. You may be standing in front of a full boardroom about to make a big presentation or in front of a handful of clients whose accounts could make or break your year. Do you feel the familiar grip of anxiety that you felt walking into the cafeteria on the first day of high school? Confidence in your smile is everything. It engages and connects you to others without having to say a single word. Many people are scared to correct their teeth when they are adults because, subconsciously, they are still the awkward teen scared to open their mouth for fear of judgment or ridicule. Don’t worry, I won’t suggest headgear but there have been some amazing advances since those horrendous high school days. Take Invisalign as an example. They don’t look or feel like braces. Why should they? This isn’t high school. Not only can you remove them, but they’re also virtually invisible when worn. So if you’re still insecure about your overbite or that crooked tooth, Invisalign may be your best bet for finally correcting your smile without attracting any unwanted attention. But before you make any decisions about straightening your teeth, let’s go back in time again. Prom is just around the corner and it seems like everyone has a date except you. Even what’s-his-name from Biology! You know it’s a long shot but that girl you’ve been pining for just broke up with her boyfriend. The only problem is that she’s in the twelfth grade. So you muster up the courage and decide it’s now or never. You practice during lunch. These blue berries seem bland and flavourless
Flash back to today. It’s time for quarterly reviews. You notice the steady stream of colleagues flowing in and out of your boss’s office. You drink coffee after coffee to keep you alert and focused until you’re finally called in. Your boss is there and your boss’s boss is there but your confidence isn’t. You feel their eyes drift towards your smile then see their attention shift onto their notes. You’re speechless. Is it the numbers on the page or the stains on your teeth that you’re afraid of? It’s not just blueberries and it’s not just coffee, but obviously you know that your smile isn’t looking its brightest. While a simple brushing could get rid of food stains in high school, now it takes a little more. Many of you commonly ask me how to get a brighter smile. While Zoom whitening is an amazing process that dramatically removes years of stains from your teeth, it’s not the be all and end all for achieving a perfect smile. Let’s go back to high school one last time. It’s the night of the prom and your mom is doing her best to help you prep. It took you over a year to choose the perfect dress and you’re hoping to pull it off. You fuss with the shoulder strap and she works on some wrinkles. You give yourself one last look in the mirror and walk out to your date. You take a deep breath, lock eyes, and... Now, maybe the two of you are married. Maybe you’re not. But at that single moment, time stood still. She smiled and he smiled back. Simple. Beautiful. Timeless. This is the essence of the smile that we all want. Whether you were a prom queen, class clown, or book worm, your smile is just that -your smile! It’s not about a single solution but rather self-actualization. We have performed hundreds of successful smile transformations that can’t be summed up as any one or two procedures. Each transformation is different because each story is different. And I’m here to listen. From minor touch ups to full restorations, Smile City Square Dental transforms smiles from the inside out.

Real-Life Marriage: It’s Not Perfect! By KERI LYNNE HENDRY
M
arriage, commitment, learning to live together, and merging two lives into one. Let’s get real; it’s not always going to be easy or perfect. When two lives come together, it’s more than living in the moment. It’s your entire history, both of your childhoods, your flaws and quirks, along with everything good; all wrapped into one big bundle. I am no expert on marriage, but I have learned a lot over the past eight years of living together, five years of marriage and two beautiful kids. I won’t sugar-coat it; everyone has rough patches. There are times that couples just don’t get each other, but that’s ok. Everyone goes through it. When I was single, I used to think of marriage as a “fairy tale.” Yes, I was one of those people. Then real life happened. I realized that marriage means going through both the good and the bad times with your partner.

The most important thing I have learned is to never stop learning about each other. Everyone changes and everyone has highs and lows. You can either pick each other apart or you can take the time to accept, be patient and understand what your limits are.
not going to be easy. However, the hardest times can bring you together and make you stronger. There is so much pressure to have a perfect marriage, but pretending everything is always going to go exactly as planned is not realistic.
Listening and communicating your thoughts can be done without yelling, swearing or hurtful words. It’s much easier to solve problems when you can share your thoughts calmly and be open to hearing both sides.
I am thankful to have a loving and supportive husband. It takes work, but we are able to accept each other’s differences and similarities. We know our limits and we choose to learn and grow together. It is a choice to stay together, to make it work and to realize that even though it will not always be ideal along the way, it’s worth it.
My husband and I each have three absolute “no tolerance” rules. This way, we know our boundaries and have a map of what we will and will not accept. Each couple is different, so you can come up with your own rules based on your beliefs. You can try your hardest to have an ideal marriage, but life happens! Fiona Cave is a Forever business owner, bringing aloebased products to everyone. Forever is the largest grower, manufacturer, and distributor of aloe vera products in the world. Their products address nutrition, weight management, skin care and cosmetics, so there is something for everyone.
In June of 2014, Jessica Hugh’s father asked her to take the helm of his HVAC business as the Director of Operations. Since the shift in ownership, Genesis West Contracting has become one of the first female owned local Heating and Air Conditioning contractors in Canada.
Megan Parker was known to be a little rebellious in the corporate world but that is probably how she worked her way up to being a General Manager of a large retirement facility at 26. After reaching her peak within the industry at such a young age it was time to reevaluate her situation.
Ayame feels her creativity is “a gift from God.” Making paper flowers relaxes her and gives her a sense of joy. Jessica’s intention is to change the industry landscape and recruit female technicians. “I’ve only met one female service technician to date who dared to take on the challenge; we want to change that!” she says. Jessica feels it’s an exciting time for the industry, as in the coming years, Millennials will likely account for half of their customers. Bringing a more enhanced and streamlined experience to this generation is critical for the ongoing success of their business. Millennials also believe in causes such as “doing well by doing good,” and so Jessica’s company is actively working towards achieving this standard by taking an active role in their community.
