EDITOR’S NOTE “Someone needs to do something about all the homeless people.” You’ve heard this. I’ve heard this. And while I’ve always understood it to mean that we need to find viable solutions to an ongoing problem, it almost always means - “I just want them gone.” When I learned that ugly truth, my heart sank. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people view the homeless as if they were things… something to be swept into a bin and thrown away. I recently went with the Flyer’s publisher, Kalian, to a charitable event. We were in downtown Fresno - between E and G St, just south of Chinatown. (if you’ve never been there, I invite you to take a drive through the neighborhood - and don’t turn away, really look) The area was littered with garbage, stray dogs roamed the streets, and rows of tents were set up along the sidewalks. A group of incredibly generous folks pooled their resources together and set up an outdoor food kitchen, giving away a hot meal and a mountain of warm clothes to people in need. Some people lived in tents nearby. Others had homes but not much more than that. Some were young; some were elderly. And far too many people had a mental illness that was going untreated. The common misconception about the homeless is that some people make poor choices and, as a result, put themselves on the street. However, people fail to realize that

those particular scenarios make up a tiny fraction of reality. A vast number of the homeless are a result of untreated mental illness cases and those suffering from addiction. But yet, somewhere along the way, we all decided to turn the other cheek and accept the practice of tossing out some of our most vulnerable citizens - those who cannot care for themselves, people who need help - and allowing them to live in squalor. We complain about the smell, but we don’t provide public bathrooms or showers for people. We don’t like seeing the homeless encampments but fail to provide a place for everyone to go with long-term solutions. December is often dubbed ‘the season of giving.’ Most of us typically think of our families during this time, but I invite you to think about those who desperately need your kindness and generosity. I encourage you to go beyond canned goods and sweaters by finding a way to support the fight for permanent answers. Because the reality is, we’re all one emergency away from being in the exact same situation, and a human being suffering unfortunate circumstances is not suddenly less worthy of dignity. We should demand better for our unhoused population because we’re in a better position to be heard. We should expect better because we’re more than capable of doing better. And we should want better because our compassionate and empathetic humanity requires it.

SIFU Skate Shop 707 N Fulton St, Fresno (559) 375-1613 facebook.com/SIFUSKATE IG: @sifuskateshop “A skate shop by skaters for skaters!” is the tagline for SIFU Skate Shop. It’s that genuine passion for skating shared by true enthusiasts that separates SIFU from the competition. “We are all skaters ourselves,” co-owner Ray Bartlett says. “We understand our customer’s needs because they’re our needs too.” Bartlett has been skating for over 20 years. Growing up in the scene, he had always been disappointed with the lack of “core” skate shops in Fresno - places that catered specifically to skaters, focusing primarily on skateboards and accessories. “All we really had in Fresno were mall shops and corporate chains,” Bartlett explains. “There wasn’t a place that just sold boards and parts, with people behind the counter who actually skated and understood the scene.” SIFU opened its doors in 2015 to fill that unmet need for a skater-owned, skater-focused shop. For the last six years, they have been providing high quality boards and accessories to the Fresno skate community. SIFU is a true “core” skate shop, with a pinpoint focus on decks, trucks, wheels, and everything a skater needs to keep that skate sesh going. SIFU features a selection of decks from Santa Cruz, Creature, Real, and Antihero, as well as local brands such as Pizza and Bus. SIFU also carries shoes, hats,

and clothing from a variety of companies, including local favorites, Lurk Hard. For holiday shoppers, SIFU is offering a variety of deals from now through Christmas Eve. All hats and clothing are 25% off, boards and accessories are 20% off, and their various shoe brands are on sale as well. SIFU is open Tuesday through Saturday, 1pm-7pm, and will be open until 5pm on Christmas Eve. The popularity of retro video games has exploded in recent years. To meet

that demand, the market has been flooded with a variety of different emulator devices, which offer dozens to hundreds of popular 8-64 bit retro titles pre-loaded in a simple plug-andplay console. While emulator devices are cheap and easy to set up and use, the quality of sound and graphics on many of them is often sub-par. Also, despite boasting as many as 600 games on some units, retro fans have been disappointed by the lack of A-list titles available due to licensing issues. Hunting for hidden gems in thrift shops or negotiating through a variety of collector sites online are the most common ways for retro gamers to find their favorite titles. Blue Shell Gaming wants to make it easy for customers to find everything they’re looking for under one roof. In addition to boasting the largest selection and widest variety of retro games and gaming consoles in the Central Valley, Blue Shell Gaming also offers repair and restoration services. Customers can bring in their old gaming consoles collecting dust in the attic and Blue Shell will return them to

like-new condition, ready to provide hours of fun and nostalgia. Playstation 2 systems are one of the most popular items Blue Shell Gaming sells, due to their backwards compatibility with original Playstation games. Nintendo 64 units are also big sellers with fans of popular titles such as Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye 007. But it’s the Pokemon games for the GameBoy and DS hand-held systems that are currently the hottest products in demand this holiday season. Blue Shell Gaming will be announcing some big holiday sales in the next few weeks on their facebook page. They are open 10am-6pm Monday through Saturday, and 12pm-6pm on Sunday.

Like most small businesses, the shutdown in 2020 was a huge financial blow. The impact was particularly devastating for Crazy Squirrel, however, because one of the standout features of their business has been hosting instore gaming sessions, something that is still limited due to ongoing restrictions on capacity in businesses. “We used to host multiple D&D sessions every day, for example,” store employee Nick explains. “Now we only do a couple sessions a week. But things are slowly returning to normal and that’s definitely something to look forward to and get excited about.” In addition to hosting gaming sessions, Crazy Squirrel carries one of the Valley’s largest selections of board games, tabletop rpgs, and card games. Pokemon is, of course, the most popular title in the store, but they also feature Dungeons & Dragons, Star Wars, Warhammer, Magic the Gathering, Digimon, Yugioh, and scores of board games from Triple-A and independent companies. Fortunately for him, those two months included the holiday shopping seasons, and his fledgling business got enough positive word of mouth to sustain him while he quickly worked to adapt to the restrictions on retailers. One of those adaptations was offering interior d e -

wouldn’t have ever started offering interior design or in-home consulting services if the shutdown hadn’t happened, and now it’s a huge part of the business and one of the most in-demand things I do.” In fact, Ammons recently completed a full-spectrum design job for a Woodward Park property, including flooring, paint, and furnishings. It’s the biggest job he’s completed so far, and something he would have never even considered if the pandemic hadn’t interrupted his storefront business. It was Ammons’s lifelong love of style and interior design that led him to starting his own business. “My parents were both artists,” he explains. “I grew up surrounded by art and creativity and I found myself drawn towards furniture, home decor, and interior design.” After completing a major design project for a friend, they encouraged him to turn his passion into a business. The overwhelming support Ammons received from his friends gave him the confidence to take a chance and the results have exceeded his expectations. Since opening in 2019, Ammons Design and Decor has grown so much that Ammons expanded into the space next door previously occupied by a gym that closed due to the pandemic. Ammons Design and Home Decor features an eclectic assortment of vintage, unique, and bespoke furnishings, as well as custom chandeliers. Many of the pieces are designed and created by Ammons himself.

Ammons offers a variety of other popular styles as well. Ammons says that it’s his genuine interest in making sure his customers get exactly what they’re looking for that sets him apart from the competition. “For me, this has never been about making the sale and all about making my customers happy,” he explains cheerfully. “The best designers listen to their clients, and help them discover the style or the pieces that bring the most peace, comfort, and joy.” Ammons takes the time to talk to his customers, listen to what they like and the feeling they want their space to convey, and always makes sure they’re happy with the finished product. Masks For Dummies XVII

a reason for the season

By I. Smiley G. Calderón | smileygcalderon@gmail.com

S

o, here we are, dear reader - the last month of another incredibly tough year. Can you believe that we’re finally in December? Are you ready to say goodbye to 2021? Honestly, haven’t we been ready since January? Back then, we had only 350,000 American Covid deaths. Today, we’re at the incredibly unthinkable statistic of 790,000 (by the time you read this, we will be well over 800,000). When will this nightmare stop? Well, according to models from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), not any time soon. In fact, we should expect somewhere in the order of 820,000 total American Covid deaths by the end of the year - that’s about 30,000 more tragedies to brace ourselves for before the new year. Believe it or not, but in the past 30 days, we’ve had more than 1,000 people die from Covid in the U.S. every day. Every. Single. Day. In Fresno County alone, we’ve had 139 Covid related deaths - about five every day - since this time last month, a 6.5% increase. And, as of the writing of this publication, we’ve had a total Covid infection tally of 144,734 and a total death toll of 2,270 - which is a 1.6% mortality rate. That means, for every 100 positive Covid infections here in the Valley, about two people will die; on average, for every 1000 infections, 20 people die. Over this past month, we’ve had 7,833 new Covid cases, which explains the resulting 139 deaths. This dismal average Covid mortality rate has pretty much been consistent throughout the entire pandemic. And, sadly, it is in line with the national trend too. Across the country, we’ve had 49,057,988 total U.S. Covid cases. Compared with the nation’s total death toll, this comes out to a 1.6% mortality rate - just like here in Fresno County. So our simple Central California county is pretty much a spot-on reflection of the national trend. For every 100,000 Covid infections, about 2,000 people die; for every million, about twenty thousand die. Yet, can you believe that, at the beginning of this pandemic, idiots couldn’t

stop trying to convince us that Covid wasn’t worse than the ordinary flu? These fools politicized the coronavirus so much and downplayed its danger so radically, mischaracterizing science and mocking our best collective efforts to mitigate community spread that many were led astray. Imagine if we had listened to these buffoons and didn’t take precautions by wearing our masks, social distancing, and getting vaccinated? Our death toll would be much worse than the atrocity it already is. But we didn’t listen to these blockheads or bend to their stubborn stupidity. Instead, we took on these anti-mask and anti-vax agitators head-on by staying focused on the evolving science at hand and then taking heed. For example, the big Covid news is that a new emergent coronavirus variant from South Africa, B.1.1.529, known by the Greek alphabet letter ‘Omicron,’ is now an official ‘Variant of Concern’ (VOC). You may recall back in summer when we discussed emergent variants and their new naming system, but this new strain is very concerning even though no one has died from it just yet (something that is likely to change this month). Despite its zero death count, Omicron is concerning because its transmission rate is some three to six times more contagious than the infamous Delta strain. And it is currently the dominant strain in the U.S. and across the globe. You see, on average, about 2% of every Covid infection leads to death. So, if Omicron infects more people more rapidly, we will, unfortunately, see that a higher Covid death toll is imminent. The coronavirus is surprising everyone with its efficient evolution and clever mutations. Omicron has figured out a way to outsmart our immune system so that even Covid survivors with antibody protection are still at risk for reinfection and sickness. Scientist Prof Francois Balloux, director of the Genetics Institute at University College London, made it clear: “From what we have learned so far, we can be fairly confident that - compared with other vari| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

ants - Omicron tends to be better able to reinfect people who have been previously infected and received some protection against Covid-19...That is pretty clear and was anticipated from the mutational changes we have pinpointed in its protein structure. These make it more difficult for antibodies to neutralize the virus.” University of Cape Town immunologist Wendy Burgers clarified: “Many of the mutations occur in the hotspots on the spike protein, which we know are important for antibodies to bind.” And, back at home in the United States at Rockefeller University in New York, virologist and laboratory researcher Theodora Hatziioannou echoed the same idea: “We can be quite confident that this new spike is going to be rather resistant to neutralization by antibodies.” Experts and officials around the globe again sound the alarm for community N-95 and KN-95 respirator/mask usage - something that we’ mask dummies’ have been urging since the pandemic first emerged. Dr. Julian Tang, clinical virologist and an honorary professor at the University of Leicester in the U.K., an expert in respiratory viruses, reminded the public: “We have been through all of this before with the Alpha and Delta variant,” he said. “But the main difference is that the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of masks and social distancing has increased….” Professor Tang doubled down: “There is more conviction now amongst scientists that these measures do work to reduce the spread of the virus...” We’ve already known this for quite some time, dear reader - isn’t it about time for everyone else to get with the program?

By Nancy Zanicchi-Bobb newbeginningconsulting11@gmail.com The holidays are upon us, and as wonderful a time of year it is, it can be especially sad for those of us experiencing loss and grief. Reminiscing past celebrations can be overwhelming. You may inevitably be triggered with emotions and possibly feel like you are reliving a moment of despair. The holidays can be challenging. Coping Skill #1 Consent to gather with friends and family to share memories. Be grateful for the gift of life and all opportunities you have been blessed with. Embrace the heartfelt goodness of Christmas past and allow it to transition into today as you celebrate, share, and love the season. It is all good. There is, after all, a reason for the season. Christmas Eve for families and couples is most special. Loss and grief are not necessarily a physical death, missing the past or childhood, missing grown children, parents, grandparents, best friends. Time marches on as we all transition through life, and sometimes the journey separates us by miles. Send a beautifully decorated holiday card; it may be just what is needed. We never know what other people are going through, and sending something a little special can be the icebreaker for a new chapter. Include something inspirational, a prayer card, or a parable from the Bible. Be mindful of the faith and tradition they embrace. Coping Skill #2 Mediate to Meditate. First, mediate your thoughts, write your thoughts in a letter, express how you feel. After you write the letter, write another letter back to yourself from that person expressing what you need to hear them say if they were still here. Place the two letters in an en-

If you build it, they will come and take it away from you and no one will stop them By Jaguar Bennett | jaguarbennett@gmail.com

I

n May, I chanced on a Twitter conversation between two giants of Fresno revitalization, great men whom I greatly admire. One great man shared his vision of improving Fresno’s quality of life: “I want a city with taco trucks on every corner; more parks; walkable shopping; schoolyards open to the neighbors; planners who don’t worship strip malls; govt. that treats the south end the same as the north end; What do you want?” The other great man shared his similar vision: “I’d like to have a community where we all went out of our way to support our local businesses, makers, artists. I’d like us to embrace our ability to grow food in our yards and public spaces. I’d like to see cultural celebrations in our downtown at least monthly.” I love the way these guys dream. I want to live in their Fresno. But I couldn’t help replying, “I don’t see the point of making big plans if the City won’t defend what we already have. I want a city that will resolutely defend the Tower District.” We can’t have nice things if the City passively sits by and lets what is good in Fresno be destroyed. And that is precisely what Mayor Dyer and the Fresno City Council allow by not enforcing zoning at the Tower Theatre. The conservative, homophobic Adventure Church has illegally squatted in

6

| DECEMBER 2021

the Tower Theatre in open violation of zoning laws for nearly a year now. Yet, the Fresno city government has not lifted a finger to stop it. And if the City will allow a Fresno icon and the heart of its arts and nightlife district to be destroyed, how can we expect the City to defend anything else here, ever? What is the point of trying to improve Fresno when anything you build can be destroyed at one man’s whim? Fresno by rights ought to be one of the great American cities. Fresno isn’t just the fifth-largest city in the United States; it’s the 34th largest city in the nation — bigger than Atlanta, Minneapolis, New Orleans, and Cleveland. Moreover, Fresno is the natural capital of the San Joaquin Valley, an area with more population than several states. I don’t expect Fresno ever to be New York or Paris. Still, it does not seem unreasonable to expect that Fresno should have the same amenities as other cities its size. If Visalia can summon the civic self-respect to defend their historic theater from a takeover by a church, why can’t Fresno? As the great man asked on Twitter, what do you want for Fresno? What kind of city do we want Fresno to be? If we ever want to be anything other than an overgrown hick town, we need to elect a city government

| FRESNO FLYER |

that has the guts to stand up to a fundamentalist church. Many people have dreamed of a better Fresno: a Fresno with a deep commitment to the arts and culture, sensible city planning, improved public transportation, cleaner air and water, economic opportunities for all. The stumbling block has always been finding the collective will to make this happen. Generations of Fresno leaders have chosen temporary expediency, short-term economies, and appeasement of entrenched interest over true leadership. I have a curious object from a bygone age in front of me — a January 2006 report to then-mayor Alan Autry titled “Making the Grass Greener.” Prepared by the Mayor’s Creative Economy Council, “Making the Grass Greener” represents the last time anyone in Fresno dreamed big. The report recommends that the City protect and nurture culture and quality of life to attract more knowledge workers and stimulate economic development. This report makes for wistful reading today. It features pictures of the Tower Theatre and Hardy’s Theatre (now owned by a church that gutted its historic interior). It recommends promoting local cultural events like Reel Pride and the Rogue Festival, both of which announced this year that they

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

would not hold events at the Tower Theatre while a homophobic church owns it. The report has an earnest naivete that the Fresno city government will heed its vision and build a better community. All of the report’s recommendations were forgotten after the economic downturn of 2008 when the City once again decided to economize rather than invest. It is doubtful that the Fresno city government will ever embrace the goal of making Fresno a world-class city. But it would be nice if the City would defend the cultural amenities that Fresno currently has. The restoration of the once rundown Tower Theatre by Dottie Abbate and the renaissance of the Tower District that culminated in the Tower District Specific Plan of 1991 represent Fresno’s most successful attempt at urban revitalization. But, unfortunately, now all of Dottie’s work is about to be destroyed because of her son’s inexplicable decision to sell his mother’s theater to a church. The ongoing threat to the Tower Theatre proves that the accomplishments of the past can’t survive without a city government in the present that is willing to preserve and defend our cultural heritage. In 2022, Fresno will hold a city council election. The critical question we must ask every candidate is: “Will you protect the Tower Theatre?”

(Family Features) Entertaining guests during the holidays isn’t just about a main course that calls all to the table. What often makes a festive gathering more fruitful is a spread of delicious appetizers, delightful drinks and divine desserts that keep loved ones coming back to the kitchen for more. For appetizing dishes from the first guest at the house to the last out the door, you can heighten the flavor and appearance of favorite recipes with one simple ingredient: apples. Ranging from tart to sugary sweet, finding the right balance for your palate is key. Scent can also influence taste, especially when you have a balanced sweetness with an uplifting, fresh aroma. Turn to an option like Envy Apples this holiday season for satisfying texture and taste with a consistently balanced, refreshing sweetness coupled with a crisp, elegant crunch. They make for an easy snack when eaten fresh out of hand but are also perfect for holding over pre-dinner appetites in small plates like this Bell-Issimo Brie Melt or Apple Stuffing Bites with Rosemary Gravy. The versatile flavor of apples isn’t just limited to foods, however. For the adults in the room, Pumpkin Spice Apple Cider with a splash of bourbon is a seasonally appropriate way to quench thirst and break the ice. Simply omit the bourbon for a kidfriendly version so the whole party can savor a sip. Easy to spot with their crimson red skin over a golden background that practically glows, Envy Apples offer an easy, eye-catching way to try new tastes and celebrate joyful occasions together. The bright white flesh is naturally slow to brown when sliced for a fresher flavor in sweet treats like Apple Oat Crumble and Citrus Caramel Topping for a tasty way to elevate your holiday get-togethers.
