EDITOR’S NOTE I

decided, after much suggestion, to start writing an Editor’s Note for the future issues of The Fresno Flyer, and it was slated for the very issue you’re holding in your hands. There was this grand plan to write something profound... something about Fresno and the Central Valley’s unmatched diversity, and how it’s cultivating a wild potential for greatness right here under our noses. But... This issue is coming in the wake of a very heated election. And it’s left a lot of people feeling alienated and divided. Now, this is not the time where I go traipsing off into a longwinded diatribe from atop my political soapbox. However, I will take this time to talk about something I think is not only relevant to the current political climate, but how it all relates to us and this paper. Because it does. By a hair margin, I am lumped into a category that would consider me a Millenial. WAIT! Don’t run away! I know we’ve been the butt of more than a few jokes what with our ‘18th place trophies’ and ‘living at home until we’re 30’ lifestyles but to be fair, not every Millennial agrees with those participation awards and the all-too-extra pampering. Some of us are fighting tooth and nail to make the best out of a crushed economy that doesn’t want to see us succeed ... but I digress. Truth is, the Millennial generation is the largest since that of the famous Baby Boomers and up until this point, we’ve been all but non-existent in the political discussion. Out of nowhere, it felt like somebody lit a match and all of the very same people who always felt that their vote would never make a difference in big government were suddenly the makings of some unsuspecting kindling. My social media feeds blew up with articles, clips from news stories, debates about policy and potential candidates. So much so, that it eclipsed pop culture media as a daily conversation. Hope became the light at the end of a very long tunnel as those who felt invisible finally saw themselves as part of a very important decision. But with the elections coming to a close, many are second-guessing that notion, feeling restless and lost with what happened.

And here’s where it all starts to tie together... We jumped into the game a little too late. We waited to speak up and decided to get involved when things were already careening down a very jagged path, far beyond our control. Or we were too young to notice the frustration of our parents, their grief, and disenchantment with Uncle Sam to understand where things were headed. Or, and I believe this is where real change is made, we were always too concerned with national politics that we forgot all about local politics. A wise man recently said, “We need new blood in the political process, and you are that new blood.” The quote comes from a line of thinking that people should be looking at their local city councils and school boards to start stirring some political change. It’s because those who sit on the council or board are most likely to eventually become mayor (as we’ve seen with the recent election of Lee Brand) and those mayors become governors and senators... who may one day be the one standing in line fighting to be the next POTUS. But it isn’t just about tracking who may be our next president way on down the line, it’s also about being part of a process where you could see the important change that affects your immediate situation. And who knows, it could be a set of changes that ripple across the state, to the west coast and maybe even the entire country. However, we won’t know what the potential could be if we don’t start educating ourselves and getting involved to generate the change we want to see.

Holiday Orange Sunsation!

we’re ok with standing against bigotry. Now, with that said, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for some local political coverage in our paper. We just need some involvement from you, if you’re looking for a platform in which to generate some movement. The Fresno Flyer is in a unique position to include a great many topics within its pages, and without much censorship, simply because there’s no corporate monolith sitting above our heads telling us what we can and cannot print. But we also aren’t fortunate enough to have all the diverse content we can get our hands on. This is where we feel we would be a good fit for those of you who are still stoking that fire. So here’s an all-call to those who are looking for something more. Get out there and go to a city council meeting (or watch it online courtesy of CMAC.tv) they meet just about every Thursday to discuss a wealth of important local policy, and then write about it. Read up on what the school board is up to, and then write about it. There’s room here to not only include your voice but to help educate and inform others about what’s happening in and to their neighborhoods. Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer in the traditional sense, you can always send it in a letter to let me know what you’d like to see more coverage of. In fact, I want to open the dialog between us and our readers... because we’re in this together. Because without you, there would be no ‘us’. And wherever we’re headed next as a community, The Fresno Flyer intends to be right there growing along side it. We’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and keep reading, because we’re just getting started.

And this is where The Fresno Flyer can help... I should start by saying that we’re not a politically or news-driven publication, The Fresno Bee, and Community Alliance do a great job at filling that need. We, on the other hand, are more focused on the entertainment side of things when it comes to the Central Valley. I think the only thing we’ve ever been really political about is the cartoons... but as a business run by a couple of minority women,

Reckless Abandon By Mary Bell

I

t’s a long story, but we are now the proud owners of a tiny kitten. She came to us when she was about 3 weeks old. After several weeks of bottle feeding and flea baths, she is now a happy, healthy, and clean bundle of energy. When I say energy, I mean energy. She has a shocking amount of vitality for all things playful. And like most cats, she plays for the purpose of learning how to hunt to feed herself as well as attack to protect herself. She still fits in the palm of my hand and weighs less than two pounds. Yet she struts around the house like she is a giant. Have you ever seen cats arch their backs, poof their fur, and walk sideways in an effort to make themselves look big and scary? It’s hilarious to watch when an adult cat does it. But when a tiny baby tries to look all big and scary, it cracks me up. I could watch her all day. It’s not all fun and games though. She really does think she is learning hunting and survival techniques. As I watch her, it makes me wonder just how much of our own human behavior that we consider to be survival tactics look comical to others? When I want to look intimidating to someone, do I come across as a cartoon character? Does my behavior say what I want the other person to hear? Food for thought. The other interesting thing is that this baby kitten has been cared for, pampered, feed, and cuddled by humans for all but the first 3 weeks of her life. It

is possible that her mother was nursing her before we found her (although that is doubtful considering the state we found her in.) I seriously doubt she has ever had to hunt for her supper or go hungry in her entire life. So why then does she instinctually want to learn how to hunt? Which makes me wonder, which instincts do I have from childhood that no longer serve me. What behaviors did I learn that I can eliminate from my life? One other thing she does that make me think about human behavior is bashing into things u n i n t e n t i o n a l l y. She will get big and aggressive as she hops around trying to look intimidating and then *bam* her head hits the wall. It’s difficult to pay attention to everything at once – especially when you want to dominate the room. Once again, it makes me wonder just how many times I’ve bashed into the wall (figuratively speaking) as I tried to control a situation. Why do I bash my head against the wall when it benefits no one at all? Makes you wonder. If you can identify with some of these ponderings, give me a call at 559-400-1352. Let’s talk about how CranioSacral Therapy can help you get past the reckless abandoned stage of life and gain some control and purpose over your behavior and relationships. You can also find out more about the work I do and how it can help you by visiting my website at www. PermissionCST.com

Fun Facts Thanksgiving Edition

1. Thomas Jefferson thought the concept of Thanksgiving was “the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard.” 2. The first Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621 and included 50 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians and lasted three days. Many historians believe that only five women were present at that first Thanksgiving, as many women settlers didn’t survive that difficult first year.

4. No forks at the first Thanksgiving! The first Thanksgiving was eaten with spoons and knives — but no forks! That’s right, forks weren’t even introduced to the Pilgrims until 10 years later and weren’t a popular utensil until the 18th century. 5. Thanksgiving was almost a fast — not a feast! The early settlers gave thanks by praying and abstaining from food, which is what they planned on doing to celebrate their first harvest, that is, until the Wampanoag Indians joined them and (lucky for us) turned their fast into a three-day feast!

6. Turkey is the traditional dish for the Thanksgiving feast. In the US, about 280 million turkeys are sold for the Thanksgiving celebrations. There is no official reason or declaration for the use of turkey. They just happened to be the most plentiful 3. No turkey on the menu at the first Thanksgiving: Histo- meat available at the time of the first Thanksgiving in 1621, rians say that no turkey was served at the first Thanksgiving! starting the tradition. 9. There are three places in the United States named after the holiday’s traditional main course — Turkey, Texas; Turkey Creek, La.; and Turkey, N.C. There are also nine townships around the country named “Turkey,” with three in Kansas. 10. Some of what you eat on Thanksgiving is imported from places that don’t even celebrate the holiday. For example, 99.8 percent of imported turkeys come from Canada (they actually do celebrate Thanksgiving, but in October), while the Dominican Republic produces 51 percent of imported sweet potatoes. 11. On the West Coast of the US, Dungeness crab is common as an alternate main dish instead of turkey, as crab season starts in early November. 12. Doomed from birth: Those poor turkeys; they don’t stand a chance. Just look at the name we gave them. A turkey less than 12-weeks-old is called a fryer-roaster. 13. A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.

A Foodie’s Review by Saeed Alkurdi

V

eni Vidi Vici it is a latin phrase meaning “to see, to come, to conquer.” It’s a phrase which, according to Appian, was used by Julius Caesar in a letter to the Roman senate after a decisive and swift victory. Veni Vidi Vici also happens to be a local restaurant here in Fresno and it certainly is, in this foodie’s opinion, one of the great hidden gems among all the restaurants in the Fresno and Clovis area. A recent experience at this fine dining establishment revealed a wait staff that works seamlessly together, is very knowledgeable and also friendly. A chef, along with a team of cooks, have shown that they are seasoned hands at executing exceptional dishes with a diverse menu containing an array of meals that are likely to satisfy almost anyone’s appetite, complete with specials that change every weekend. The restaurant offers take-out for those who prefer to enjoy their meal within the privacy of their own home, however, the

atmosphere inside the establishment could make you feel like you’re already there. Warm lighting, exposed brick, and artwork hanging from the walls all complimenting each other to help you feel as though you stepped into your own perfect dining room. Seating is limited inside, however, there is a patio out back with more tables and a chance to enjoy the night air while dining. Reservations would probably be a good idea on the weekend but were not necessary tonight. Upon entering the restaurant I was immediately greeted, sat down, and served bread, butter, and water. The bread was soft and delicious. The recommended appetizer was the beef Thai rolls with a cilantro lime chili sauce. The rolls were warm, and crispy, but a lack of salt left the beef without a strong savory taste that would have played well with the sweet cherries. However, the sauce and the fruit really gave the dish a bright flavor. My entree, a New York strip with sauteed cloves of garlic, mashed potatoes, and brussels sprouts had a wait time of approximately 20 minutes before it was served, which was a little long of a wait but it was executed flawlessly. The steak was adequately seasoned and tender, the mashed potatoes were silky, and the brussels sprouts were slightly crisp and delicious. Everything was bathed in au jus (from the steak) and the sauteed cloves of garlic gave great flavor to every side. I chose a cabernet wine to pair with the heavy styles of flavor and it was a great compliment. In fact, I would go even further and say that the wine completed the dish by wrapping up each bite like a carefully packaged present. After experiencing this meal I can say that whether you are new to Fresno or have lived here for any great length of time... if you haven’t been to Veni Vidi Vici you truly haven’t conquered the Fresno food scene. Saeed is a local ‘foodie’ always on the hunt for the next great find of the Valley’s best-hidden gems. Twitter / Instagram: @kurshjak

Chris Patrick Chamblee Band by Anglia Walpool

O

n the rise to modern rock, there have been famous evolutions of the rockabilly 50s, the raw sound of the 60s to the arena power sound of the 70s and 80s into the hard edge of rock today. Chris Patrick Chamblee Band brings home the nostalgia of that big metal flare to the stage, reminding us of a sound far from over. Consisting of Chris Patrick on vocals and guitar, his post-punk revivalist wife Lindsay Crain Chamblee aka Ruby Rocker, and Pauly Pockets on drums, Chris Patrick Chamblee Band is a trio of distinct sound that echoes the likes of Judas Priest and the Sex Pistols. Chamblee has a long history in the music industry, having worked as a studio musician, producer, production engineer, solo artist and writer. Leading his own project didn’t seem like much of a stretch for his range and versatility. “I actually began [playing music] in Mayfair England during the height of the New Wave British Heavy Metal. ... I arrived in LA in 2011 for a walk-on role in a movie, and it was Ruby who picked me up,” Chamblee shared. The events that followed that initial meeting didn’t directly lead to the birth of the band, but in fact resulted in a passionate love story. “... We eloped off [the movie] set a few days later,” explained Chamblee with a smile.

“He eventually needed a bass guitar for a show that was a month and a half away, so I did what any supporting wife would do and learned how to play bass... since then I’ve been the bassist and backing vocals for his band,” Ruby offered. The duo became a trio with the addition of Pauly Pockets. Finding the drummer came as a surprise and stroke of luck as Pauly was only in California for a visit, due to head back to his home in New Jersey. Pauly had been “testing the musical waters” in the area, so to speak. “I was actually about to hop on a plane back to Jersey when Chris contacted me. I’m glad I didn’t catch that plane because we all get along so well and share the same level of passion for music,” Pauly stated with a grin. The group is working with Quantum Theory Cartoons to produce a fully animated music video for their first single off their upcoming album, set to release in April of next year. In the meantime, you can find previous works from Chris Patrick Chamblee on albums like ‘XcludeD’ and ‘All This and a Packet of Crisps’ available for listening on Spotify and Reverbnation. Follow them on social media @ChrisPatrickChamblee to keep up to date on shows and much more.
